once again thinking about how hodgson ordered a massacre over irving's dead body. the horror in his eyes when it's proved that it wasn't the inuits. running to little for assurance and little providing it. how his great monologue isn't just about cannibalism - it's if i were a braver man i would kill mr. hickey. irving's murderer. the guilt in his eyes when crozier (and by extension, little) sees him on the hill (with hickey). the way he sits isolated in the mutineer camp. the way in that final fight - he's one of the three chained to the boat. anyway i'm completely normal as you can tell

Hodgson is so WWI-coded to me. He somehow psychically witnessed the slaughter on the Somme despite growing to adulthood and dying decades before the advent of Germany. He is haunted by trenches that have yet to be dug. "Wispy etiolated soft-spoken subaltern with a gift for language, interminable sadness, and a penchant for Roman Catholicism" is the mold for a type of guy that wasn't supposed to go into production for another seventy years. He somehow knows who Wilfred Owen is.

jared harris doomed grouchy alcoholic captain of my heart and all, but I cannot emphasise just how moving it is to read the actual crozier’s letters to his ‘dear sisters’ and nicknaming his sister charlotte as ‘dear small’ and gushing over how excited he is to serve under someone so honourable as sir john franklin and constantly asking james clark ross to pass on his love to ross’s wife and baby and nicknaming anne ross ‘thot’ (??) and the baby cute things like ‘the dear little stranger’ and ‘little sir james’

and yes I love terror’s francis ‘crankypants’ crozier, but the fact that we think of victorian men as being repressed and emotionless and yet every single one of the real man’s letters just overflows with affection and good humour just Does Something to me ok
