Demons in Disguise

Here's a commission for ThemightyNanto and this time its of Sirene and Kaim in their human forms walking around the city together and enjoying each other's company! I really like in ThemightyNanto's fanfic Devilman the Birth https://www.deviantart.com/themightynanto/gallery he's gotten both Sirene and Kaim together and is building up their relationship, its very sweet as Sirene's and Kaim's relationship should be and its good they get that second chance. I had a lot of fun working on this piece and it was good to play around with the lighting of the city too :D Many thanks to ThemightyNanto for commissioning me on this piece, I'm glad to be drawing something really nice for Kaim and Sirene again! :D

i.  ACTS OF SERVICE

You joke that Akira would probably take a bullet for you, and he responds quite seriously.

“Yeah, I would. If it meant saving you, I’d do it. I'd do anything really.”

He’s kneeled before you, from where he dropped down to fix your loose shoelaces, when he makes the declaration. But after catching your surprised expression, he stands to his full height, flashing you a small smile.

"Sorry. That weird to admit?" he asks, rubbing the back of his neck.

“It's—no it’s not. It’s just so like you to say something like that,” you groan.

He blinks several times. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he asks, genuinely curious.

“It means,” you start, pressing a hand to his chest. You smile at the way his heartbeat stutters under your touch. “I have to avoid putting myself in danger otherwise you’ll throw yourself in front of me like the reckless doofus you are.”

“You know,” Akira says, edging closer to you, pressing your palm into his chest, where you can feel his heart thundering now. His other hand cups your chin, tilting your face up to meet his wry, toothy grin. “Some would call that romantic. Risking it all for the person they love.”

“Fudo, you are not risking your life for me,” you say, exasperated, jerking yourself out of his grasp.

“But babe, I’m a devilman! I’d probably survive a bullet!”

In a way, you can’t blame Akira. You suppose that’s the way he knows how to love: putting himself on the line for others. He did it for Ryo, he did it for Miki, and he would do it for you in a heartbeat.

It’s not just the big things either. From saving you from demons to creeps ogling you on the subway; from whipping up curry for dinner when you're too tired to cook, to offering to rub your shoulders when you're stressed and achy.

While Akira doesn’t neglect to tell you he loves you, his actions practically scream it.

“Just have some kind of sense of self-preservation, alright?” You sigh. “I wouldn’t want to be widowed at such a young age.”

He frowns. “It’s not like I’d leave you on your own—W-wait.” His eyes widen. “Did you just say widow? But we’re not even—”

You turn away swiftly, hoping to hide your own surprise at your declaration. “Ah... forget I said that,” you say, walking away.

“Hey, wait—we’re not done talking here! You can’t just leave!” He runs after you, grabbing your wrist. You glance back, surprised; you nearly forgot how fast his demonic abilities made him.

He calls your name, sickly sweet. “Mind repeating what you said back there, babe?”

“Just ah, throwing that out there, Akira.” You laugh nervously, hoping your voice doesn’t sound as high-pitched to him as it does to your own ear. “You know… metaphors. We’re not actually—I mean, we’ve only been together for what? A year so…”

You hope against all odds that he can’t feel your pulse thundering from his grip, but the way he smirks devilishly has you convinced he can anyways.

“Well now you’ve got ideas in my head,” he says smoothly, pinning you against the closest tree. “And I wouldn’t want to disappoint your expectations.”

ii. PHYSICAL TOUCH

Akira's parents were hardly around when he was a kid, busy as they were traveling to different countries to offer their aid. He would never complain about it, knowing that as traveling doctors, they were serving the greater good—but still he yearned for the little things he missed out on: a pat on the head for a job well done, a hug whenever he hurt himself and needed comfort.

It makes sense then, that now that he’s in a relationship, he's almost always missing your touch.

"You’re up way too early,” he grumbles, shuffling into the kitchen. He makes for a hilarious sight, his hair in disarray, black tufts sticking out in every direction. His lean form is swathed in a throw blanket he’d grabbed from your bed, one you distinctly remembered bunching up next to him so he wouldn’t notice you left that morning. Opening his arms wide, he envelops you in a hug from behind. You giggle as your spatula flips the eggs on the pan.

“I was hungry.”

He hums, slotting his chin onto your shoulder, wrapping his arms around your waist, watching you cook. He doesn't let go even as you attempt to wiggle out of his grasp, reaching for the cupboard.

“Got it,” he says, tightening his grip around you, and—with enviable ease—uses his much longer limbs to open the cupboard and grab a plate. He can’t resist letting out a short laugh when he hears you grumble.

“I could’ve gotten it if someone let me,” you say, sticking your tongue out at him. “But thank you.”

As you serve breakfast onto both of your plates, you make your way to the dining table before Akira coughs meaningfully behind you.

“What?”

He sets your plates down and sits himself, before gesturing onto his lap.

Your jaw drops. “Akira, really?”

“Your seat’s taken,” he points out, gesturing at the other seat, where Taro’s settled himself into. Your attempt to lift him off the seat ends with him hissing at you. You glare at the black cat, and he simply meows back at you.

“Fine. No funny business though, okay?” you tell him, before sitting down on his lap. Akira engulfs you in his blanket fort, wrapping his arms back around you.

“Promise I won’t.”

You’re convinced him and Miki’s cat are conspiring against you. You definitely see him wink at the cat when he thinks you’re not looking.

Akira seems happy however, rubbing your side as he chows down on breakfast. You blink; come to think of it, you’ve never seen him quite this clingy.

“Everything good?” you ask him suddenly.

He sends you a wide-eyed look, a piece of egg hanging comically from his mouth. He swallows. “Yeah? Why?”

“Nothing, you’re just… well, you’re pretty touchy this morning,” you note.

His grip tightens around you. “I was just thinking how lucky I am to have someone to hold. That’s all.”

Heat creeps to your cheeks at the sheer honesty in his words, before turning your attention back to your own plate.

It’s not that you don’t want to be touchy, but… well to be honest, Akira’s thighs are lean and muscled—definitely not the most comfortable seat. You shift this way and that, feeling your boyfriend still behind you, before squirming.

“Hey, uh…” He grips your waist meaningfully, and you still. “I know you said no funny business, but keep that up, and these aren’t the only eggs getting scrambled.”

Your jaw drops. “Akira.”

He shrugs unapologetically. “You know what you do to me.”

iii.  QUALITY TIME

“Wanna go for a ride on my bike?”

“I saw this new romcom on Netflix. Wanna watch with me?”

“Hey, what was that video you wanted me to watch with you?”

...

Akira huffs, slouching onto the couch next to you. When you glance up from your phone, he takes the opportunity to pounce, planting his head onto your lap.

“Can I help you?” you ask, raising a brow.

He stares at you pointedly with his sharp rimmed gaze, and you get the sense that he is none too pleased about you shooting down his attempts to grab your attention.

“Nah, I’m fine. Just settling in,” he says casually, before whipping out his own phone. Two could play at this game. He adjusts himself, propping his legs onto the arm of the couch, burrowing into your lap. Catching your eye and sends you a smirk.

“What’s wrong?” he says, smug and borderline mocking. “Thought you were busy. Just trying to entertain myself here.”

You snort, attention returning back to your phone as well.

He nudges your hand with his head a few times, and you get the message, and your fingers curl into his unruly locks. He hums.

You can’t resist glancing over a few times. You know Akira hates spending time on his phone; he says it makes him restless. Has the old man finally figured out what Tiktok is? You lean over to see what he’s watching. His front camera is on, and it flashes, taking a picture of the both of you.

“Seriously?”

He glances up. “I’m documenting my favorite program here.”

You groan, grabbing a pillow nearby and throwing it at him. He catches it with ease.

“Delete that,” you whine. “I look awful.”

“How else am I supposed to remember this exciting time we spent together?”

“Couldn’t you be normal and just—just go on social media or something?”

He blinks at you innocently—or as innocent as his perpetually devious face could manage. “Why don’t you show me what that is?”

Akira certainly has ways of demanding your attention.

iv.  WORDS OF AFFIRMATION

“I love you,” Akira groans, trailing sloppy kisses down your neck.

“You feel so good,” he mutters, his hips rocking against yours, his hands pinning yours to the bedframe. He’s frenzied, his hands roaming the soft give of you, wanting to feel every part of you.

“Wanna—wanna make you mine,” he grunts, sealing his fate with a kiss, stilling as he spills his warmth inside you. You’re locked together, your legs tangled for what seems an eternity.

Akira finally reclines back, and you shift with him.

These nights always seem infinite. When Akira murmurs sweet nothings and your body latches onto them, the heat of his promises diffusing into your skin until the morning comes.

“I wanna get stronger for you,” he tells you, gripping your hand in his. “I need to.���’

“You’re already strong.” You squeeze his hand in yours, and his lips twitch upwards.

He props himself up on his elbow, staring at you intently. Then he’s caging your body into the bed, pressing his forehead into your shoulder, the warmth of his breath coming in a rush against your skin.

“Not strong enough to handle the thought of losing you.”

v.  GIFTS

Akira’s tried and true method is flowers. Whenever you’re mad at him, or whenever you’ve had a bad day at work, he’ll show up with a bouquet, just for you. Maybe it’s something he picked up from watching too many cliché romance movies, or maybe it’s a method he learned from watching Miki’s parents’ disputes.

He clicks his tongue, setting down his phone. He’s not sure how every single flower shop in the area is closed, but they’re not an option at the moment. He peers at the neighbor’s house, at the array of flowers blooming across her lawn. Maybe he could ask nicely…

When you get home earlier than usual, you’re surprised to see a box of chocolates on the counter, along with a note.

Sorry for being an idiot.

You snort, popping the lid open and a chocolate into your mouth, humming as the sweet taste spreads across your tongue. The door opens and shuts behind you, along with a rushed exclamation.

“Y-you’re back early.”

Akira’s covered in dirt, a bundle of flowers clenched in his hands.

“This is—this is for you,” he says, holding out the flowers to you. “Shit, I don’t have a vase or anything…”

“What happened to you?” you ask, biting back your mirth.

“The old woman across the street said I could take these if I helped her with gardening, but it took way longer than I thought. And then she kept trying to invite me in, or or ask if I wanted to get dinner with her, but...”

You laugh, plucking the flowers from him. “I think we have a vase somewhere.”

“Wait,” he says, gripping your wrist. “Are you still—are we—” You raise a brow. “I’m sorry!”

“I’m not mad, you know that, right?”

He stares at you, baffled. “But you wouldn’t even talk to me this morning.”

“I was running late. In a rush. Besides…” You step closer to him, rubbing at a splotch of dirt on his cheek. “Seeing how far you went for these? How could I stay mad?”

He entwines his arms around you, resting his chin on your head. “I’m glad.” He sniffles. The two of you stay like that for several beats, until you tug at his shirt.

“We need to get you out of this.”

He looks down at you, raising a brow. “Because it’s filthy,” you clarify.

“Why?” He smirks. “Don’t want me to rub off on you?” he asks, nudging his hips against yours.

“Looks like I already did,” he notes, eyeing your stained white shirt. “Why don’t we both clean up in the shower?” He waggles his brow.

As expected, the two of you end up getting down and even dirtier in the shower.

Devilman OC: Azrael, the angel of death

SO AFTER AN UNGODLY AMOUNT OF TIME, I've finally decided to make a post about one of my most developed OCs I've had. (who is also related to Devilman. How surprising.)

Before starting, however, I wanna give a huge shout-out to @missn11 and @amyfartsart for the wonderful drawings they did of my boy. Seriously, go check out their art if you're also a Devilman fan. They're both a joy to talk to. ^w^

As the title suggests, Azrael is the angel of death in the Devilman world, with his main job being appeasing dying souls and then guide them to the afterlife; be it Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. It should be worth noticing that the angel is the "unnoficial" ruler of Hell as well (since he's related to Ryo/Satan), so he also makes sure to keep everything under control in the land of the damned. At least, as much as he can help it.

Despite his gloomy appearance and quiet nature, Azrael is a kind and sweet person. He’s always willing to help people, and he’s quite friendly as well. So much so he's even able to befriend demons of all beings, besides just humans, which makes sense considering everyone is equal in death’s eyes. He’s also incredibly curious, to the point that almost becomes a fatal flaw for him considering it can get him into danger.

However, Azrael isn’t as innocent as he seems. He can be quite cocky when he wants to, and despite being a silent dude, he’s a surprisingly strong angel in battle. So much to the point he became a rather feared fighter for demonkind. He’s overall a rather lovable dork, so long as you don’t get on his bad side.

While his main job as an angel of death is to appease dying souls, he doesn't always gives the same treatment to the souls of rotten, corrupted people. In fact, they might get something worse and more terrifying coming from Azrael before he drags them to Hell with him.

On the same topic, Azrael has a bit of a dislike for “unnecessary death”, especially when it comes to wars or politics that bring more bad than good when it comes to humanity or demons. Even more so if it is something that can be easily avoidable. He also has a strong dislike towards injustice, and will call out those who genuinely oppress someone with their ignorance. He’s not even afraid to be brutally honest with them.

Powers and abilities:

-Being able to fly

-Superhuman strength

-Incredibly quick healing/regenerative abilities

-Can teleport himself

-Invisibility

-Can lend some of his powers to anyone by just handing them a feather

-Cannot die

-Facial distortion

-Shapeshifting

-Telepathy

-Merging with a living being and allowing them to use his powers

Trivia:

-Azrael got most of his fighting abilities thanks to the demon champion Amon taking him under his care.

-While Azrael can fight bare hands, he tends to use his whips most of the time, with one made out of leather and the other made out of silver. (Think of it like something from Castlevania). He also has a scythe, but oddly enough, he doesn’t use it in battles that often.

-Azrael actually has a castle in Hell, which is located in the first circle of Hell known as Limbo. It’s called Pandemonium, and a few demons live there with him.

-He has three demon familiars. A goblin, a pixie and an imp. They're his most trusted allies and they're based on the horsemen of the apocalypse. (Besides death).

-Since Azrael can shapeshift, he can turn into a crow or a black cat.

-Azrael’s bodily temperature is incredibly cold, which not only allows him to travel around the hottest spots in Hell with very little problem, but it also allows him to eat the spiciest of foods you could ever think of.

-Huge video game nerd.

-While Azrael genuinely cares about humans and thinks they’re interesting, there is some stuff about them that he can’t help but find weird. An example would be why they are so obsessed with the meaning of life, why some of them need to follow a religion, things like that.

-He’s a surprisingly decent cook, and has occasionally cooked demon meat before.

-He sometimes uses his whips to fish.

-Azrael possesses the terrifying ability of being able to distort his own face, which he can use to make the most scary of expressions that look like something straight out of the Mandela Catalogue. Some demons are genuinely horrified by this ability of his.

-Azrael keeps a journal where he writes down information about demons. It also has a few silly doodles of demons as well, as some sort of reference picture for each one.

-While Azrael cannot die by any means, the only way that he could be killed would be if it was done by his own hand.

Backstory:

While living in Heaven, Azrael was a bit of an outcast amongst the angels due to his gloomy appearence and quiet nature, with Satan being one of the few who he talked to. The two angels developed a brotherly bond between each other as time went on.

After getting the job of angel of death, it didn't take too long for Azrael to discover the existence of the demons, which was a frightening discovery as he ended up losing an arm during an ambush. Thankfully, it grew back thanks to his healing abilities, and despite the horror that shook him to his very core and the pain inflicted on his body, Azrael's morbid curiosity desired to know more about the demons.

With only his heart and instinct to guide him through, Azrael would continue with his job of reaping souls while living in the brutal world of the demons, gaining allies and enemies along the way. He even encounters Satan once more, who's now the main ruler of the demons, and the two decide to keep in contact with each other.

However, thanks to the violent and raunchy nature of the demons, Heaven's ruler, God, decides to destroy them by sending several angels to Earth in an attempt to hunt them down, with the attacks becoming more and more frequent as time goes by. It gets so intense to the point Satan has to request Azrael if he would join the demons’ side so that he could aid them in the war.

Unfortunately, due to a mix of fear and hesitation of wanting to hurt his divine siblings, Azrael has to decline the offer; and while it pains Satan, he somewhat understands his decision. However, the three-headed demon Zennon (one of Satan’s second in command) isn’t pleased at all by this and angrily declares Azrael a traitor of demonkind, something a lot of demons end up believing as well. Considering he isn’t longer welcome there, the angel ultimately ends up leaving in exile.

While Azrael still doesn’t end up joining the battle and remains neutral to both the forces of Heaven and the demons, he still tries to aid the demons in any way he can by building shelters where the weaker or smaller demons can hide from the war. All while he focuses on collecting the souls of the dead demons, and witnessing just how brutal his siblings have become by mindlessly destroying what was once a chaotic yet beautiful world.

Eventually, Azrael is taken back to Heaven after he has been found out helping the demons, and after a rather heated argument with God, the angel of death ends up being trapped in a void of darkness that leads him to Hell; the afterlife of the demons and the enemies of Heaven.

Once the war is over, and with the demons (alongside Satan) buried bunder the ice to gather strength, Azrael gets free again; still quite affected over what happened. In fact, he barely talks to God and his other angelic siblings at this point, spending more time on Earth collecting souls and even in Hell or the void, for he no longer feels safe in the realm of Heaven.

From here on, the events of Devilman take place. Something Azrael ends up witnessing on every detail, including how the human Akira Fudo became a devilman thanks to his friend Ryo Asuka (who Azrael quickly assumes is actually Satan taking the form of a human), his battles with several demons…And the tragic end of the world by the demons revealing themselves to humanity, driving them insane with paranoia, and with the demons and devilmen going through a war with no winner.

Things would get worse as not only Akira ends up dying, but Azrael eventually finds out about the timeloop God has put Satan through as punishment for what he did thousands of years ago.

Obviously, due to his fear, Azrael at first tries to stay out of this; thinking Satan deserved such a fate upon him. However, the longer the time loop continues, and the more suffering he sees, the angel starts to realize just how utterly cruel this punishment is. It doesn’t help that, loop after loop, Satan starts to become more jaded and emotionally exhausted, to the point Azrael is worried his brother could become an empty shell of his past self.

Once he realizes just how utterly despicable this is, Azrael finally makes his choice: to finally stop God from putting his creation under such a vicious cycle of self destruction, even if it means he has to kill the being he once called “father” to free Satan, Akira, the demons and all of humanity.

Hi! I followed you a while back because I LOVE DHD and through that I also found Fuzzy, and I just wanted you to know I enjoyed it so much I read the whole thing over the course of just a few hours. I loved all the characters and I love how they all were trying their best to do what they thought was the right thing, even though their goals and methods clashed considerably. It was just really cool to see that level of character development, I feel like I don't see that very much! Anyway thank you for Fuzzy and DHD and have an excellent day :)

I think you'll see in my stories that nothing is purely black and white. There's good in bad and bad in good, and everyone is always trying to do all their decisions based on what they think is the best for them (as this is how we behave, too).

The narrative perspective is important, too. Let's think about Devilman. We follow the story from the perspective of humans and how they try to fight demons and stop them from killing all humanity.

But, if we followed it from the perspective of demons, we would have a story where demons - after God tried to kill them all in a demon genocide - go to rest and let the world heal. When they wake up, their territory and world has been taken over by an invasive species called humans.

In Devilman, you get to see a bit both perspective through the devilmen, who are being who start to get an ability to turn into demons, either intentionally or just one day like that. As demons, people view them as an enemy when they just want to live and help humanity against the demons. We get to see what demons go through via the eyes of devilmen, when the demons just try to exist and have their home back.

And then, of course, the people also just try to exist and keep their home.

I try to keep this present in Alrick, which people at times seem to forget (or not realize), as Alrick appears mainly gentle and empathetic. But, at the same time, as sweet as he is, he is capable of murdering and torturing people without remorse. That's his job.

And in FUZZY, we’ve got Chaos, who will eat you alive with ease, but who is also very loving father and a friend.

you and your friend's recent posts has me thinking on like the taxonomy of gay villainy. cause if it's something that renders you human (through connection) and inhuman (vilification), then there's gotta be levels to it. cause there's villainy by gay people where the potential connection is fairly inconsequential (j&j), villainy where the relationship between sexuality and wrongdoing is enhanced but fundamentally too rancid to be enjoyable (h*soka, arguably orochimaru depending on how generously you wanna read him) then the sweet spot between the two (s&i, ryo devilman) where the toxicity reads as human and even sympathetic

truly i have devoted a scary amount of time to thinking about gay villains i sat thru basic instinct a movie nobody should watch just for research purposes fjkjadj;kasjk its very interesting cuz i think also whats so appealing is in some ways the home grown nature of it that like these are often characters designed to be not sympathized with and so it can feel more interesting and make them feel more complex as like villains because idk i think its very easy to make a villainous character people are like oh woah theyre so cool or whatever but when they are also being demonized thru their framing and other aspects sorta tangential to the main villainry you can also connect with that more than i guess just doing what the narrative wants you to do and yeah i think it really can humanize characters and well if more people watched sarazanmai understood reo and mabus impact i think they actually explore a lot of this stuff like similar characters to them in previous ikuhara works are not often given the kind of focus or chance at redemption they are given its a genuinely fascinating narrative i think how their love is used against them and intertwining their gayness and villainy and that like they literally weaponize shame and actually the way it like completely flips the script making all the unhealthy desire turned monstrous to be the desires of straight men they are so ashamed of it literally becomes a weapon and that the gay characters can open their hearts to love and connection like truly a complex commentary on gay villains nobody is discussing :( anyways realizing most of my thoughts could get diverted ot my reading list of like weird subtext of gay desire and killing and gay vampires and whatever ok signing off <3

Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman: Another OVA that shows the end of the world after the demons destroy human civilization. It makes one think about who really are the monsters, as the humans killed anyone they were suspicious of and even killed off Akira's adoptive family, and gorily too. I liked that we could actually see Amon interact and even fight with Akira as it showed Akira's immense willpower despite Amon's demonic strength and rage.
