Fun Saturation Fact #72: While nothing at all alike at this point, the member of the Sundry Others known as 'Zap' was originally based (very, very roughly) on a male character from the webcomic Zap!, which I encountered for the first time back when I was still in university.

The comic was still ongoing at the time, and I dropped it for awhile (along with a slew of others) before remembering it again years later, picking it back up, and finally learning how the story ended. It's one of those cool comics where you see the art and story improve and change over time, and it's got an odd, special little place in my heart. So when I was faced with six mostly blank-slate OCs that Edgeworth was going to encounter at SteelKon UK and which I had only the roughest ideas of what to do with, I decided to borrow Zap!'s title character's name and hair colour for one of them, just as a starting point (bonus fun fact: the reason my Zap is a girl is entirely because the comic's Zap is a boy, and I didn't want to risk doing a complete cut and paste).

In any case, my Zap quickly grew to be a completely different character than her inspiration (she's not the amnesiac captain of a spaceship, just for starters). But she also, in many ways, remains a thread tied around my finger, a slender connection to memories of sitting in front of my computer at university, reading a comic about space, psychics, aliens, and love... :)

If you want to stop feeling sad, sometimes that means you need to stop listening to that sad music that you told yourself was "validating my emotions" and "self-reflecting" and "helping me process things". Nothing's being processed, my girl, you're just sticking more unnecessary detergent in the emotional laundry machine and watching the soapy water spin.

Immortal characters like vampires and gods and whatever are always depicted as being apathetic to downright delusional as a byproduct of their immortality.

Being godlike and powerful makes them jaded and unempathetic (Greek gods in media) and the restless search for connection and validation makes them delightfully delusional and manipulative (many of the vampires in Interview)

But then you move into the robotic vein of immortality and you find a completely different kind of emotional composition entirely.

I was chatting with @rxmain-lettuce and essentially listing off every popular robot in media these days from Wheatley and Glados to AM and Auto.

When you have a character achieve immortality it so often comes with the consequence of depression and loneliness. The immortal’s loved ones pass on and they watch decades pass them by. It results in a character inherently out of touch with reality.

Even well meaning immortals in media like Heimerdinger (Arcane) are slightly deluded in an outdated or lofty way of thinking.

And then you have immortal robots who are anything but apathetic and jaded.

Robots like Glados and AM who completely sidestep apathy by being so hatefully vengeful

It’s almost what keeps them alive.

But then you get into robots like Auto or Five Pebbles who aren’t directly hateful but are antagonistic simply because their intended purpose no longer aligns with that of the human protagonists.

It’s also important for me to mention that I’m largely talking about antagonistic robots. There are plenty of friendly robots in media, however I feel that the characterization of an evil robot is something set into our very history with technology.

I mean the whole idea of “robots are going to kill all of humanity” could’ve started as early as 1900 when the poster, “An Unrestrained Demon” was prevalent.

We’ve always feared technological advances and personally I think we should go back to thinking about how robots are gonna take over the world. The his who thought of that and made movies out of those ideas were genius.

Started watching A Starstruck Odyssey because I wanted some more fun silly antics and I am really liking it. Getting into the groove of things of the sci world was a bit confusing at first but I knew I would get used to it. I am just less of a sci fi nerd than fantasy so I need a little more to get my bearings but I do enjoy it.

Ngl it's really fun to see Ally play the most capable and serious person of the group. I love that they have to be the person in charge so they are not supposed to get into shenanigans but they can't stop themselves from feeding into the chaotic energy.

The Zac character switch was great too. I did not expect that at all I was curious to see how Skip was gonna work and then he got slugged lol. Honestly it's so good because Zac is so insanely great when it comes to physicality and he sells the character so well.

I went to the 2024 Cat Video Fest on a whim (since the first showing was right before A Matter of Life and Death) and it was such a delight to watch silly cat videos in a theater full of laughing people. It's playing at the Roxie several times over the next few weeks as well as in other places across the US (and the proceeds go to cat rescue organizations!).

Something I've learned about myself is that I tear my heart open first for someone and THEN ask: will you love me? Will you run towards me because you're glad to see me? Will you take the time to listen and learn about me the way im willing to for you? Will you grow alongside me and delight in the little things? Will you actually want and invest in a future with me? Will you love me with attentiveness and tenderness and careful intention? And the answer to THAT has always been/keeps being a resounding no lol

Oh my gosh, these are AMAZING!!! I love the slightly more cartoony feel the tiny fedora gives Miles (and no worries about not being about to draw hats, especially seems-simple-but-are-actually-hard ones like fedoras), these are so animated and he really does have a powerful con-crytpid vibe in them! You really get why no one would expect him to actually be him if they didn’t already know, looking at these! Also, absolute delight to see his hoodie and business suit disguises as well as the one he wears around the actual conventions, what a treat - doubly fun because I know exactly which scene you were thinking of for that very last image in his partial suit where he’s blushing! Also, always fun to see group shots of Miles with the Sundry Others, I really love seeing those, it’s so much fun! Thank-you so much for these, and you’re most welcome as well! <3 <3 <3 <3
