So I've missed reading books. My local bookshop has a scifi/fantasy book club. I've decided to give it a shot. The next meeting is December 20th, and the book is The Story of the Hundred Promises by @itsneilcochrane
I picked it up today so that I can be ready for my first meeting.

Loving the Hades 2 EA and seeing everyone's takes, but I gotta say I'm fascinated by the group of players whose feedback seems to be "how dare Supergiant make a game I cannot master within *checks watch* 48 hours of launch"
#hades 2#hades game#I say this as someone with hundreds of hours and runs in the first game and came into this EA with a lot of muscle memory#y'all it took a *while* for folks to figure out how to do a first run clear in the first title#and y'know what?#maybe SG *is* designing the second game so that players need to engage with the systems on multiple levels - i.e. runs and story beats#stronger ludonarrative cohesion; how terrible; how dare they; etc. etc.#but seriously y'all we're less than 72 hours in what will likely be around a year of EA#I promise you don't need to get the pitchforks just because Eris is currently a roadblock in your day 1 speedrun dreams

Fighting DEMONS rn trying not to get invested in one piece to figure out wtf you're posting about!!!!
come here cyber.... we have this thang
#mp answers#i've been trying so hard not to be annoying to my bnha friends but if you will allow me to push this for this ask let me say 🙏#if you're afraid of the episode count for one piece the manga is a lot quicker read while being just as enjoyable because the art style is#an actual delight. its great its fantastic im absolutely in love with it#the series is soooo good and i know luffy can seem unappealing to people before they start but he's just SUCH a great character & continues#to be even now. the story is SO GOOD the characters are SO GOOD... theres so much lore and world building that its insane#if you read the manga we get 'cover stories' on what's going on with previous characters to see what theyre up to even though we moved on#from where we left them. a lot of these cover stories blend into the main story so well its just seamless#there's one where we get introduced to a character we dont see hundreds of episodes into the anime and they show up like; during the second#saga. the series is about traveling to other islands and every single arc has been tied to another in some way or form that shows up later#even if its sagas and sagas later- it still becomes relevant again!! it's a huge ongoing story and there isnt a single arc that feels like#it has no purpose (sans filler in the anime-but even then!! some filler arcs are really entertaining!)#it's emotional! its sad! its downright stupid and silly but GOD... you can feel the love that oda put into this series and his characters#and the emotions in the expressions and the messages the story gives off it just makes me UEUHGHHAHGHH!!!#it's all about the adventure and the romance of it all! its about the freedom it brings and bringing freedom to others!#its a series where treasure should be a focus given its pirates and the its a giant treasure hunt for the one piece and yet! and yet so man#of the characters treasures are things that are not coins and gems but people and promises and family and and#im going to EXPLODE i love one piece

excerpt from “Briar Rose” in The Complete First Edition: The Original Folk & Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated and edited by Jack Zipes
#I didn’t know that ‘she will fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years’ was in the old (1812) version of the story#as opposed to eventually be woken up by true love’s kiss#there’s a strong sense of fate and destiny in the Disney movie version#if ‘I walked with you once upon a dream’ is true#and then with the conflict that the prince falls in love with a woman he meets in the woods even though he’s been promised to someone#but then it turns out she’s the woman he was promised to so really there’s no conflict#there's still a portrayal of fate in this version where the prince simply walks in with no barriers where it was previously impossible#simply because it’s been one hundred years and it’s time for the princess to wake up with a kiss#also interesting that there would be a hedge of thorns that imprisons the kingdom and kills anyone who tries to enter#but also protects the sleeping people- who really couldn’t be woken up before 100 years had passed anyway#when that wasn’t stated in the curse#perhaps when changing the curse from killing the princess to merely making her and everyone else sleep for 100 years#the 12th fairy couldn’t completely remove there being a dangerous element of the curse#but also it is protective- someone could have tried to harm or rob the sleeping people- and is clearly inspired by the princess’ name#fairy tales#sleeping beauty#my posts#book excerpts

Okay, the little “History is…” talk in the new Amelia Project is making me emotional. Because, as a history buff, my absolute favourite part of history IS the people and the individual stories! One of my favourite things is to read the correspondences of people who never thought that their stories would ever be worth telling or would be important to the historical record.
“History is just wars and dates.”
“No. It’s people! It’s like… it’s like… what is it like? It’s like reading sci-fi but instead of the future it’s the past. But it’s still all stories and cultures and people and they’re different and you never really meet any of them-“
It’s such a lovely way of putting it. And, as Kozlowski points out, the past is still tangible and still impacts and exists in our modern world. Even if it bears little resemblance to what it once was 100 or even 500 years ago. Wars and dates are how we categorise the past, what we define eras by. But it does not give an accurate representation of the living, human parts of the world. How people still played practical jokes, how cultures were evolving or clinging to stay alive, or how for all of time people have always been here just as we are now. Just in different settings. And you know what, that’s beautiful.
The past is horrific and brutal and ugly. It’s also inspiring and worth remembering the stories that make it all up, the threads in the tapestry that is continuing to be woven. It’s about significant names such as Moliere and his death but it SIMULTANEOUSLY about the joy of that one day you found the perfect waffle.
#sorry for kinda going off#but I’m a massive history buff#(if you follow me on main you know this)#and it kills me whenever ppl disregard the past as Just Dates#or as being ONLY about the major events and Important People#so maybe I’m just reading WAY too much into this#but sometimes history is just about the joy of a good waffle#:’)#the amelia project#what ALSO kills me is that a lot of the people who I’m extremely interested in knowing the stories of weren’t literate#or what they did leave behind for the future is destroyed#never think something is unimportant in history#I promise you there will always be at least a handful of people who devote parts of their lives to wanting to know more#who become enamored by your story about dealing with the postal service in 1810#it’s human to connect#mundanity is what allows us to connect most deeply with people from hundreds of years ago#history

something about potemkin's lines in his ending is making me genuinely sad
#on the radio this morning there was a story about a syrian activist who escaped the assad regime#he spent years trying to get western powers to help demand the release of hundreds of thousands of prisoners#of course western politicians didnt help. they dont even lift a finger when their own people die in the millions#but he got so frustrated with trying to get help and no one helping him that he went back to do it himself#his freinds and family told him not to but the assad regime lured him back with promises that they'd hear him out and let some of them go#he went back to syria in 2020 and a few days ago when they released everyone they found his body in the prison morgue#potemkin talking about wanting to free his nation and people while the whole world is struggling and buckling trying to do the same#potemkins story is about someone who made it through. but so often in life people dont and i dont know what to do#my god; i only have one life to give.#guilt gear#gg rewatch

I think I just guaranteed queen of nothing by the crane wives a place in my spotify wrapped tonight because of time princess
#so basically im in an inactive society that wasnt always inactive#and i became leader without trying to#i was just chilling and somehow racked up the highest contribution without trying to and then the last leader went offline#and i dont even know who the last leader was#i dont 100% stories and ive got almost every companion at level 10 or higher#ive crafted virtually every blueprint i have that i like and played every story im interested in#i was just waiting for the next event forever. after the shock wore off becoming society leader gave me smth to do in this game#while making me realize we'd become v inactive#twilight's crown had recently come out and i found that fitting#i pour hundreds of materials into time goddess because i dont use them for anything else#i spent 400 diamonds on fantasy promise like one girl can get the whole team out of prelude when no one else has above 1k starlight points#i put so much into an inactive society. i know i should leave#but part of me keeps going ''and just abandon my people''?#it's not like leaving will send me back to having nothing to do. i can keep putting this energy into an active society#and get my moneys worth#which never really crossed my mind until tonight#i know not to cling to obvious lost causes. i've seen what happens when you do.#still feel bad about ditching when i'm the only one who still shares codes in chat#but they can do the same thing.#maybe i should encourage them to.#i'm thinking stay until fantasy promise ends#and/or until i've got this last piece of this society set crafted (unless that takes too long and october happens before then)#(bc if i'm leaving i wanna be in an active society by the time sprint rolls around)#and then screenshot the society id in case i cant find somewhere better and choose to come crawling back#ok i have rambled about this in my phone and notebook 3 times and each one has made me more certain of my decision to leave#everyone in the dutp discord says i need a new society#anyways#i needed to talk about that somewhere#queen of nothing has been on loop in my headphones for an hour

The Story of the Hundred Promises by Neil Cochrane
A loose retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” that centers queer and trans characters
Trans sailor Darragh Thorn has made a comfortable life for himself among people who love and accept him. Ten years after his exile from home, though, his sister asks him to reconcile with their ailing father. Determined to resolve his feelings rather than just survive them, Darragh sets off on a quest to find the one person who can heal a half-dead man: the mysterious enchanter who once gave him the magic he needed to become his true self. But so far as anyone knows, no one but Darragh has seen the enchanter for a century, and the fairy tales that survive about em give more cause for fear than hope. In lush and evocative prose, and populated with magical trees and a wise fox, The Story of the Hundred Promises is a big-hearted fantasy suffused with queer optimism.

Books of 2023. HAPPY STORIES, MOSTLY by Norman Erikson Pasaribu (translated by Tiffany Tsao).
So one of my go-to indie bookstores in Columbus told me about the new Cercador Prize, which is for lit fic in translation, and that's just. Supremely up my alley. This one is a finalist this year! It and A SHINING by Jon Fosse most grabbed my attention when I went to peruse, so I snagged both of them and am excited to read.
#books#books of 2023#happy stories mostly#norman erikson pasaribu#tiffany tsao#this one is queer :)#queer and indonesian#author's pronouns are they/them on the english jacket copy!!#i feel bad cuz i typed them as 'normal' every damn time in this post lmao clearly you see what types of words my fingers are used to#(it's a holdover from abnormal and abnormalities don't @ me liz)#anyway i'm here for weird fuzzy spec fic#don't love that the cover is matte (those of us with clammy hands are Not Good For This) but!! excited to read it!!#ESPECIALLY AFTER A HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE FUCKEN HELL#this one is small :) and promises to be Weird :)
