The Story of the Hundred Promises by Neil Cochrane

Tumblr media
A loose retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” that centers queer and trans characters
Trans sailor Darragh Thorn has made a comfortable life for himself among people who love and accept him. Ten years after his exile from home, though, his sister asks him to reconcile with their ailing father. Determined to resolve his feelings rather than just survive them, Darragh sets off on a quest to find the one person who can heal a half-dead man: the mysterious enchanter who once gave him the magic he needed to become his true self. But so far as anyone knows, no one but Darragh has seen the enchanter for a century, and the fairy tales that survive about em give more cause for fear than hope. In lush and evocative prose, and populated with magical trees and a wise fox, The Story of the Hundred Promises is a big-hearted fantasy suffused with queer optimism.
Mod opinion: I have seen the cover float around a few times on my dash, but I've never actually read the description. It sounds interesting though.

So I've missed reading books. My local bookshop has a scifi/fantasy book club. I've decided to give it a shot. The next meeting is December 20th, and the book is The Story of the Hundred Promises by @itsneilcochrane
I picked it up today so that I can be ready for my first meeting.

zefram cochrane has been so thoroughly normal duded down by the progression of the star trek franchise its hard to remember its like he was introduced as like what if u met neil armstrong or one of the wright brothers centuries after their supposed deaths not dead at all theyre trapped in like an insane gothic romance with a sentient cloud and u have to teach the cloud and neil armstrong how to love again idk nobody would come up with this shit did anyone speculate that amelia earharts disappearance was actually because she was trapped on an island with a coconut crab that electrocuted people who tried to interfere with their love like again nobody contemplates this is how a famous disappearance would end up and like this is an insane piece of lore but now hes just like representation of theoretical middle america slash literally gene roddenberry and we are all supposed to forget about the cloud shit well i didnt why has everyone else

Threshold: live vicariously through me
Neelix, be loathed or beloved cook depending who you ask solves an engineering problem that two engineers and cocky flyboy with daddy issues can’t fix
Successful simulation
Great idea! Give the cocky flyboy pilot an ego boost that he very much doesn’t need by calling saying he’ll be a pioneer like Neil Armstrong or Zephram Cochrane! I don’t foresee that being an issue
It is an issue in the next scene
Cocky flyboy pilot argues with captain about going on the live test. L+Daddy issues+ratio. This scene exists for the sole purpose of telling us Tom has daddy issues and a superiority complex as if we couldn’t already tell
Cocky flyboy exceeds warp 10 on the shuttle they’ve named Cochrane as yet another ego boost to a man who does not need one
Warp ten: achieved. Flyboy: off the long range sensors. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Whoopsies he and the shuttle have materialised on the ship
Sick bay time
My man fucking ascended and existed everywhere and nowhere for a lil bit in an extremely Daniel Jackson From Stargate turn of events
Wow this is a normal episode of voyager so far……. A little goofy, maybe but not terrible
Just kidding he’s having an allergic reaction to water and can no longer breathe oxygen
He’s over sharing about losing his virginity and then randomly screams pepperoni and then demands pizza
Also wants kess to kiss him cuz he thinks he’s gonna die but she can’t breathe the nitrogen air and he dies kissless
KESS KISSES HIS FOREHEAD AFTER HE DIES????????!!?!????!?!!!?
Sike! Once again Inspired by beloved archaeologist, Daniel Jackson, he has come back to life and scared the hologram doctor but he’s losing hair and has another heart
A lower decker is a spy! Subplot that I forgot about
30 seconds of total footage about that so far
Back to Tom Paris Lizard Arc
He’s gross now and he’s snarkier than usual and Is Not Taking This Well and is having a Meltdown™️
Damn he tried to attack the captain and then bounced off the force field like a fly off a windshield
HOLY FUCK HE COUGHED UP HIS OWN TONGUE LMAO
His DNA is just constantly changing on a second by second basis
He’s Enlightened and he MUST leave this ship because “the future is in the past”
They’re gonna shove him in the warp core to fix him (kinda)
THE LIZARD MAN HAS BREACHED CONTAINMENT BITCH!!!!!
He has kidnapped his own captain and is going on a joyride in the shuttle (hehe they’re headed to warp 10 again!!!)
Chakotay is ON THE JOB
The doctor cracked the code: Tom is evolving at rapid speed, proving that salamander is the APEX HUMAN FORM
They’ve located Paris and the captain. They are full salamanders on a jungle planet
awwww cute little baby salamanders!!
and Chakotay LEFT THEM TO FUCKING DIE
Paris and the captain are human again and are now awkwardly talking about their babies
Emotional scene to talk about daddy issues and inadequacies blah blah blah
The end
Final thoughts: I ❤️ salamanders!!!! Also what the fuck!!!!

1 3 25 38 for book ask
a book that is close to your heart: The Forever King by Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy. This came out forever ago (1992) and cemented little Jen's love of mythological retellings. It's a modern-day Arthurian reincarnation tale with diversions into the past, and this passage from the end just pops into my head every so often and I sigh.
For a moment the field was utterly silent. Not a whisper of breeze, not the chirping of a single insect. It was the silence of time turning backward. And then, ringing across the rolling hills came Arthur's command, rough with tears and pain and loss:
"To arms! Your king calls you to arms!"
There's a reason my first NaNoWriMo attempt was Arthuriana, and when my bridesmaids walked down the aisle for my wedding, they held books instead of flowers, and this book was one of them.
a stand-alone that you wish was part of a series: Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I'm not sure how it could be, but I wanted more from the moment a star fell to earth and said "fuck" in the tiniest font.
Gonna cheat with the last two, because a book by your favourite author AND your favourite series happen to be the same. Honestly I could have answered all these questions with books by Carol Berg. Close to my heart/series? The Rai-Kirah books. Standalone I wish had more? Song of the Beast. Books by my favorite author I wish everyone would read? The Lighthouse Duet books (Flesh and Spirit and Breath and Bone--incidentally another book carried by a bridesmaid in my wedding) and the Bridge of D'Arnath quartet.
thanks for the ask!
Incredibly well-loved and well-read 30 year old book cover under the cut.

Aro book review: The Story of the Hundred Promises by Neil Cochrane
Supposedly a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but more of a generally fairytale inspired fantasy story with strong Beauty and the Beast references. This includes short stories inserted between chapters, which isn't normally something I'm into but it worked here.
The book is full of queer characters, and has strong trans and aro themes throughout. There are multiple aro characters, including an aroallo side character. In general I really enjoyed how sex-positive it was.
While overall I appreciated the discussion around the meaning of love and different types of love, I wasn't sold on the romantic relationship the main character gets into at the end of the book. But if you don't mind that it's a solid read!

On 13th October 1862 tragedy struck when two trains collided at Winchburgh to the west of Edinburgh.
This is thought to have been the first head on collision between two trains in the country, it was certainly the first one with loss of life as 17 people died.
It caused horror and dismay at the time, but today has been almost forgotten. The crash occurred a mile and a half northwest of Winchburgh. The site of the accident was just west of Craigton House in a 30-feet-deep cutting.
Usually there would not have been a problem as there were two tracks there, but one was being repaired at the time. The cutting is on a curve, and by the time the two drivers saw each other, they were barely 300 yards apart.
The subsequent investigation of the wreckage showed that both drivers had reversed their engines and applied the brakes. The driver of the train from Glasgow, Archibald Neil, leapt from his engine and survived though badly injured. The other driver was killed.
The dead included James Hosie, manager of the Oakley Iron Works, who had just recently married. He was the founder of the Bathgate Foundry in 1857. Ironically, much of his foundry work was iron castings for railways; as he had lived, so he died by railways.
Dozens of the injured were taken by cart or train to Linlithgow, and accommodated in the Star and Garter and Red Lion inns. The Falkirk Herald reported that an injured woman gave birth prematurely in the Star and Garter, but the incident seems to have been a false alarm. Others were taken into private houses – four in the home of Alex Miller, a saddler, and another two in the home of Mr John Robertson. Twelve died in the crash, another four in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and a Mr Bolton died on arrival at Linlithgow Station.
The dead were listed as:
Robert Morton, engine-driver on the train from Edinburgh Andrew Cochrane, fireman on the train from Edinburgh John Cunningham, fireman on the train from Glasgow Mrs Honeyman, wife of the railway guard on the train from Glasgow E.S. Bolton, a Birmingham commercial traveller Mr Cowie, a railway clerk at Stirling James Hosie, manager of the Oakley Ironworks, Dunfermline Mrs Gill, a Yorkshire lady in her seventies Mr Hardy, an attendant at the Morningside Asylum Mr C.M. Haxton, a Kirkintilloch printer Alexander Hedderwick, a Falkirk solicitor William McFarlane, a Leith shoemaker Michael McQuade, a Dunblane railway porter Emily Smith, daughter of an Edinburgh joiner Elizabeth Stevenson, a servant girl Robert White, a Falkirk fish-dealer John Wightman, the Earl of Lauderdale’s estate manager.
The casualties were fewer than they might have been because both trains were going slowly – the east-bound train at 20mph and the west-bound train at a mere 8mph.
You can find more on the accident on West Lothian Museums and History page here https://www.facebook.com/.../winchburgh.../629594440561678/

I‘ve added a No but I‘d like to option, which I think could work for that as well? Would that work for you?
