excerpt from “Briar Rose” in The Complete First Edition: The Original Folk & Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated and edited by Jack Zipes
#I didn’t know that ‘she will fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years’ was in the old (1812) version of the story#as opposed to eventually be woken up by true love’s kiss#there’s a strong sense of fate and destiny in the Disney movie version#if ‘I walked with you once upon a dream’ is true#and then with the conflict that the prince falls in love with a woman he meets in the woods even though he’s been promised to someone#but then it turns out she’s the woman he was promised to so really there’s no conflict#there's still a portrayal of fate in this version where the prince simply walks in with no barriers where it was previously impossible#simply because it’s been one hundred years and it’s time for the princess to wake up with a kiss#also interesting that there would be a hedge of thorns that imprisons the kingdom and kills anyone who tries to enter#but also protects the sleeping people- who really couldn’t be woken up before 100 years had passed anyway#when that wasn’t stated in the curse#perhaps when changing the curse from killing the princess to merely making her and everyone else sleep for 100 years#the 12th fairy couldn’t completely remove there being a dangerous element of the curse#but also it is protective- someone could have tried to harm or rob the sleeping people- and is clearly inspired by the princess’ name#fairy tales#sleeping beauty#my posts#book excerpts
