Ok, so as promised the summary on The Sign novel. I'm being reading about some people saying that they did not enjoy it much because it's very different from the normal fated mated trope always presented (you will soon see why) but I personally loved more because it, found it a different and refreshing take on the usual trope.

I will divide this in two posts, one focusing about their present and one about their past. In this one I going to focus in explaining their past life's messy tango.

Novel Spoilers ahead, you have been warned:

First we will start with a glossary for reference of who is who, I only call them by one name on my summary(probably their recent one) so used this for reference:

Tharn/Vassarat: In the series they are calling past Tharn Wansarut, but in the novel his name was Vassarat, Vassa for short.

Phaya/Master Sakunanoppharuj : Prince Garuda.

Vanvisa: Vassa's sister, in the series I think they are given her another name. In love with the Dr to this day.

Dr. Chalotorn/Naga King: we all know him.

Darawan (Dao) /Dujdarawan: Phaya ex lover this life, first love in his past life's and the Naga King fiance in their first life. Phaya's brother fated lover.

Ticharuj/Master Sakunticharuj: Garuda King, Phaya's brother in the first life and Dao's love, formal fiance of Viphavadi. Not yet shown on the series.

Viphavadi/Naviphavadi: Ticharuj fiance on his first love, in love with Phaya to this day. Not yet shown on the series.

We learned about their past in the novel by Vanvisa, she shows herself in Phaya's dream to reveal the past to him. She is able to do this and defy her king because in their first life Phaya saves her life by Vassarat's request and she is indebted to him. Later he asks her to repay him but revealing his pasts life story to him in his reincarnations so he has a better chance to protect Tharn.

The first thing she shows him is a very young Vassarat, that lives with her sister and the Dr in the Underwater palace, she shows him the day that the Dr and her sister make a promise to each other. One that the Dr relies on until this day to justify his actions. At this time a sad in love Vassarat approaches the Naga King to confront him about the news of his engagement, he consoles saying the she was young and had plenty of time to find a better man to herself, and promise her they will always be companions no matter what:

- I've been promoted from your maid of honor to your companion.

- Aren't you satisfied? My companion isn't a position that anyone could be.

- So, what a companion must do, your Highness?

- Stand by me, accompany me, never be apart from me and obey me.

- But I've heard that being companions, their status must be alike.

- Really?

- Right, right. Our status is alike now. From now on you are my companion. What I eat, you eat.

The listener's eyes broadly widen and sparkled.

- Really. Have I ever lied to you? Chalotorn says in a tender voice while flicking his head disdanfully. See? She is so childish, he thinks to himself.

Then the scene faded to a picture of a little female Naga reading a book to Chalotorn, or she was to catch some fish and show it to him, or sometimes they teased the palace people together. These moments caused Vanvisa to let out a thin smile.

OBS: I have a lot o feelings about these two and their very complex relationship, I will write a post about them and my take from them from the novel. I just can't see the Dr as a true villain in it. But now lets continue.

Next Vanvisa shows Phaya how he and Tharn met, the Dr asks Vassarat to spy on his fiance for him and while doing she discovers Dao secret involvement with Phaya's brother and while trying to run to tell the Dr she is catched by Phaya and his brother who intended to kill her but show her mercy because of Dao's plea to her life.

Being indebted to Dao, Vassarat goes to live with her and serve her. One day she goes to the Underwater Castle to tell the Dr everything but is stopped to reach him by his servants.

She waits outside his room that opens to reveals her sister. Vanvisa was also in love with him and given herself to him as concumbine. Vassa does not gets angry with her or blames her, she consoles her sister saying she understands, she tells the truth she was there to reveal to her. And her sister in love with the Dr asks Vassa to not tell him thinking it would be better for her this way, what Vassarat agrees and goes back to serve Dao.

Dao expends a lot of time with Phaya's brother and this causes that Phaya and Vassa to met a lot, they begin as enemies always fighting each other but soon later became best friends since they both shared their experiences of unriqueted love.

In one of those visits they met Viphavadi, that discovers Phaya's love for Dao and gets infuriated. Vanvisa also learns of their visit and goes to look for her sister to warn her that the Dr was looking for her. But she encounters Viphavadi instead that in her anger attacks her, Phaya and Vassa found them, Vassa pleads to Phaya for him to save her sister life and he does going against Viphavadi and dragging her away.

Vassa bring her sister back to the Underwater Palace and they both lie about what happened to the Dr. He waits for Vassa to leave and presses Vanvisa for the truth and she caves and tells him.

Meanwhile a mad Viphavadi tells to Ticharuj that he's brothers is in love with his lover. Ticharuj feels guilty for to this day have been ignoring his brother feelings and always have involved him in helping him and Dao in their secret meetings.

The Dr learning the truth goes to confront Dao and Ticharuj, but when he gets there he only meets Vassa that predicted him learning the truth and goes to meet him to try to calm things.

But seeing her there only enrage him further, he goes in between Vassa and Ticharuj and they both start to fight each other.

Vassa tries to stop them and fails, in the mean time everyone else also gets there. Dao trying to protect her lover gets in between and gets hurt.

After that Phaya tries to get in between to stop them but at the same time Vassa also goes to protect the Dr and while meaning to destroy Ticharuj spear ends up mortally wounding Phaya instead.

She was full of guilt and tries to aid him but is impaled by Ticharuj in vengeance for his brother Weak, full of guilt and unable to do anything else Vassa prays for Phaya to be reborn in nobility and to her to be also be reborn with the promise of protect him from all dooms.

After Vassarat and Phaya's death there is no going back from the mortal confront of the Dr and Ticharuj anymore. Viphavadi took advantage of it to kill Dao. The Dr sees it and ends her as well.

Dr and Ticharuj fought for a long time causing all the mortal creatures to suffer until the Supreme Deity condenes them to one thousand years of emprisoment for their deeds.

Tharn and Phayas keep being reborn along with everyone else that died that day, they kinda stuck in a cycle reliving what happened.

Tharn almost always dies protecting Phaya or Dao, Phaya is able to get together with Dao in a few of his lifes. Tharn falls first and Phaya (the genius) only realize who he truly loves in one life that Tharn dies protecting Dao and confess to him.

In the meantime Dr and Ticharuj are released from their prison. The Dr spending all this time apart from Tharn is missing him and goes looking for him. He sees the die/reborn cycle and his sacrifices for Phaya and gets really mad, he starts to accompany Tharn's lifes in the mortal world to take care of him and keeping him away from Phaya. While doing this he realizes that the one he loves is Tharn.

Ticharuj also does the same thing and takes mortal form to accompany Dao's rebirths.

Is important to know that unlike the others they choose to take mortal form and no matter what age they present themselves they always have all the memories of what had happened.

And with this we end the first post, in the next I summarize what happens to Tharn and Phaya in their current life in the novel.

Things I’ve learned from reading The Sign novel that I’m glad they changed for the show (so far)

Singh being at training camp and being the one everyone bullied, I mean everyone! Even our heroes.

Singh apparently has 10 degrees? Dude’s like 26 years old, that’s a little much there babe.

Tharn blurting out that he likes women during a quiet moment with Phaya, completely unprovoked, even though for so many chapters Yai has mused about how often he has to stop Tharn from staring at hot guys, has to stop Tharn from staring at Phaya when he’s barely dressed, literally had to dump water on him to stop him from fixating on Phaya. But yeah, okay you’re super duper straight Tharn.

Phaya being in love with Dao and nearly hounding her about being in love with her until she basically puts him down like a lame dog.

A very clear case of ‘it’s not men it’s just him’ syndrome happening between Phaya/Tharn, easily my least favourite trope of all time.

Phaya having a mom and older brother in his life, Nee’s there too but we like her.

Tharn’s mom being alive

Chart becoming part of their friend group because of Thongthai and Khem.

Singh and Chart start dating after Chart breaks his leg and has to leave training. (WHAT!?)

Tharn being not only a sloppy drunk but a crying drunk, they basically made him a weeping clingy uwu teenaged girl every time he had a drink and it was borderline misogynistic.

The police captain being a ‘tall beauty queen’ of a woman that apparently leaves all men struck dumb the moment they see her. (Oh spare me the ‘jaw dropping gorgeous not like other girls’ character)

And that was just from the first like ten chapters, I’m not even close to the Garuda and Naga stuff, forget about the cop crap! Like this was just up to right after the Naga festival, so what, like 3 episodes?

What I wish they had left in!!!!

Tharn and Phaya’s beds being next to one another instead of Tharn and Yai bunking together, the pair whispering and gossiping constantly under their blankets to the point that the other guys start to think they’re into each other way sooner.

“Yes, my wife Sand is trans, a trans woman. I don’t care, I dated her when she was a man because I was in love with her. I don’t care what she is, she is she. Sand is Sand and I love her.”

YAI!!!! YOU PERFECT LITTLE HONEY BEE! I NEED A YAISAND SPIN OFF ASAP!!!

Second case + fall & cave scenes

First of all, these are just my theories based on what I've been seen/read in the special episode, teasers, trailer, official accounts, and novel. So, let's be delulu together 🌞

This scene will probably be the second case that our boys are going to investigate.

Yup, one of them died. And why am I saying that only one of them? well...

Here I need to clarify that in the novel the second case is also about paintings, statues etc, BUT NOT ABOUT THOSE GUYS, so these are not spoilers lol

One thing I remember from it and that makes sense here is Tharn attending the gallery exhibition as a bodyguard, and wearing a black shirt & a black tie. WAIT, what? in the series Chalothorn is there too!

And here Chalothorn is wearing the same outfit while hugging Nat's character, who is clearly in shock/crying. It seems like Tharn is also there 👀

I'm so fucking curious about this case, I can't sleep, I need help. This hyperfixation is killing me, and if it is killing me then y'all are dying with me 🗡️

Did I buy the novel because I am obsessed and I needed to know the source material? Yes, yes, I did. I'm almost halfway through and just read when Phaya learns where their karma started 👀

I have opinions about the edition and translation, tho. But since I'm a newbie, I'm gonna shut up and just keep reading.

Novel Spoilers about this:

So, in this confrontation in the novel when he throws that at Phaya's face he is absolutely right, and Phaya knows it and thats why is such a blow to him.

In the novel Tharn's previous karma with Phaya makes him sacrifice his live to save him countless life's. So the Dr saying that Phaya being around Tharn is dangerous for Tharn is true.

The Dr is not the two dimensioned villain they are making him in the series on the novel. He is a very complex character and indeed loves Tharn, 90% of his beef with Phaya is the consistent causing of Tharn's death and pain and thats why he always tries to kill him way earlier in their life's.

So, any threat to Tharn's life like this one would only have been a bluff to anger Phaya up, he probably even attempt it on the novel, Phaya would be able to see throught it, at this point in the novel he knows all their backstory and knows him pretty well. He usually throws Phaya's insecurities at him, like when Tharn are stabbed and they are fighting to see who take cares of him and he says to Phaya: "But are you? Able to take care of him?" shouting out to everytime Phaya failed in their past.

But anyway, just wanted to rant about this since series Dr since to be going a different way. I'm keeping a open mind and positive expectations but I do really prefer the layers and complexities of the novel characters.

Hello everyone I am so unbelievably pissed about the NaNoWriMo situation that i'm going to take my massive stack of writing and craft books and my English degree and channel all my rage into making an email newsletter to send craft-oriented writing prompts and tips during the month of November. Say No to NaNoWriMo, but yes to WriMo. You get it.

I'm not going to make this have the same goals as Nanowrimo-- I'm not reskinning it but less ableist, I just really think having a whole month where people focused on their work is pretty cool and I want to keep up that spirit. This is going to be informal and run by Just Me, though I'll make a discord server if it's clear there's interest. One of my all time favorite moments in svsss is when Bingqiu are going through the jinlan city arc and Binghe is like "DONT YOU MOVE ANOTHER STEP OR ELSE" as his xin mo period cramps hit and Sqq, the little bastard, looks at Binghe as he backs away before waving and turning around to leave and the level of DISRESPECT in this man. I love him

Dr. Chalotorn & Tharn - My Views from the Novel

So, i want to talk little about the Dr and Tharn complex relationship in the novel, like i said in previous posts i do not really see the Dr as a villain in the novel.

NOVEL SPOILERS AHEAD:

Now, to explain how I see the Dr and Tharn relationship i want to make a parallel to a BL couple we have this year AI Di & Chen Yi from Kiseki Dear To Me.

Ai Di & Chen Yi were raised together as brothers since infancy, they were orphans adopted by a mafia gang leader. AI Di is younger by a few (3 if i am not mistaken) years while Chen Yi is older.

As they grow up Ai Di develops a crush on Chen Yi while the other did not seem (at least to him) to reciprocate his feelings. The thing is Chen Yi was also in love with him but because of their difference of age it was harder for him to notice the change in his feelings. He had loved Ai Di for years since the day they met, he has a responsibility to him as his older brother. Ai Di has always been the most important person in his life and when he sees in their future he does not see this changing or a future where they are not always together.

As the series progresses they both have to be forced into a separation of 4 years, and in this time that Ai Di was away Chen Yi realizes his true feelings for him, he understands that they always being together isn't a given and how much he really loved, missed and needed him.

Now coming back to Tharn and the Dr, this is the first moment of their past that we learn from the novel:

- I've been promoted from your maid of honor to your companion.

Now, i see the Dr and Tharn relationship a lot like Ai Di/Chen Yi, the Dr was the Naga King he knew and loved Tharn since Tharn started to exist, he watched him grow and played with him. When Tharn approach him with his crush he dismiss as a child admiration but promised him that no matter what they would always be together for eternity.

But as Chen Yi, the Dr took this as given, and unfortunately for him Tharn's love was a temporary crush and he truly loves Phaya. After Phaya and Tharn's death in their first life, the Dr is imprisoned because of his part in what happened by 1000 years.

After all this time separated from Tharn and watching him die in front of him he realizes how much he truly loves and misses Tharn.

He comes back into the mortal world to accompany Tharn in his reincarnations and watches Tharn fall for Phaya and sacrifice himself for countless lives dying to protect him while Phaya is still oblivious to his and Tharn real feelings. As a bonus Tharn does not remember him or any of their history together. He sees Phaya disregard and take for granted Tharn feelings like he used to do, and decides he does not deserve him.

So he starts to try to keep them apart, kills Phaya if he has to, so the Tharn could live longer and happier(in his head) with him. At some point he decides to bring Tharn again to the Underwater Castle (this is why Tharn life line is short, if there aren't all those safety measures in his infancy the Dr would have already brought him to his castle with him).

Do I think he is a perfect person? No, he is a really flawed one like everyone else, but I just can’t see him as a villain. He sure is very entitled (as all kings used to be) and decides things for Tharn without asking him.

But the moment in the end of the novel when Tharn knows everything and makes a decision to be with Phaya and tells him that he respects it and leaves him. Because he truly does love him and always did.

i think what got me the most this episode is the very, very ending.

you can tell sakuna lives inside phaya now, that they've become one in the same.

"i'm sorry i didn't recognize you" because sakuna would never forget wansarut but he was locked away and limited by mortal phaya's memories.

"i wouldn't have let you stay close to that man." because sakuna would have never, ever allowed chalothorn anywhere near tharn, never would have tolerated his constant interference - but phaya didn't know, didn't know how that man had hurt them and torn his heart from his body the moment wansarut hit the cold hard ground.

"from now on, always stay close to me." because sakuna can't ever take his eyes off wansarut again, can't bear the thought of what may happen, can't stand the thought of what has already happened as tharn kept his mortal body safe. "you have to stay by my side."

"because you are only mine." because sakuna will not let chalothorn have him, he will not bend his knee to the snake that has torn them apart time and time again. tharn is not a petty trinket to be had, he is the most precious thing in his life and the very reason he and phaya still live today.

sakuna cradles tharn's face between his hands, knows he has finally come home, and he won't allow any force in the world to take his home from him again.
