Y’all, go watch A Small Light. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and I’m crying as I type this out.
A Small Light is the story of Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary who helped hide the residents of the Secret Annex, and her husband Jan, who was a member of the Dutch resistance. There’s suspense, and drama, and moments of joy, all ultimately leading to the heartbreak you know is coming.
It’s eight episodes people, I know colleges are going on break right now so y’all have time.
I just…this show deserves all the awards. Emmy sweep, thy name is A Small Light. The usage of light and color, music, I just…God.
The acting is phenomenal. Liev Schrieber’s portrayal of Otto Frank throughout the series, especially after the homecoming, it was amazing. I was bawling. Bawling.
This show hurt to watch. And that’s good, because it should. These were real people, and we should weep for them, we should remember them.

Book 26 of the 50 book challenge. The Last Secret of the Secret Annex by Joop Van Wijk- Voskuijl and Jeroen De Bruyn. The authors were mainly writing about Bep Voskuijl who was one of the helpers for the Secret Annex but they also talked about the other helpers, plus Anne, Margot, Edith and Otto Frank and some about the other family and the dentist who were hidden in the building. It’s a very good book and one of Bep’s sisters was involved with Nazis during the war and may have been the one who turned them in, but nobody knows for certain who are still alive. It’s a really good book. Joop is the youngest son of Bep born in 1949. If you’re interested at all in the Frank family or read Anne’s diary, you may like this book.

Iain Glen, Tamsin Greig, and Ellie Kendrick in The Diary of Anne Frank (2009) Amsterdam 6th July 1942
E1
The series begins in June 1942, in wartime Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Annelies Marie Frank, a Jewish girl, is celebrating her 13th birthday; amongst her birthday presents is a red diary. Days later, call-up papers arrive for her 16-year-old sister Margot. Their parents, Otto and Edith, decide to hasten their plan to go into hiding to ensure that the family does not get separated.
The next morning, 6 July 1942, the Franks head to Otto's pectin and spice company. They proceed up to a Secret Annex at the back of the building. Only the trustworthy office staff, such as Miep Gies, know of their existence and have agreed to help them survive. In the annex they must obey strict rules, remaining completely silent during working hours. Otto and Edith sleep in one room, with Margot and Anne next door in another. At the very top of the building is a disused attic for storing food. This soon becomes Anne's getaway, as she is able to gaze outside at a chestnut tree and the tower of the Westerkerk.
At first, Edith and Margot find the confinement hard to bear, while Otto and Anne sew material together to make black-out curtains. They are soon joined by their Jewish friends Mr and Mrs van Daan and their teenage son Peter. Their arrival liven things up, but also brings tension, especially since Peter brought his pet cat. She continues writing her diary.
*The vehicle that passes by in the first few minutes is a 1949 Mercedes-Benz 170S, while the scene is set in 1942.

Remembering Fritz Pfeffer- One of the other Fathers in the secret annex.
Friedrich “Fritz” Pfeffer was born on April 30, 1889, in Gießen, Germany, into a Jewish family that owned a bustling clothing store in the heart of the city. Bright and ambitious, Fritz pursued dentistry in Berlin, eventually establishing a successful practice. After completing his education, Fritz trained as a dentist and jaw surgeon, obtained a license to practice in 1911 and opened a surgery…

I think this scene near the beginning of Black Book (Zwartboek) where we see Rachel Stein hiding with a family of Christians is supposed to look like Anne Frank's secret annex - an attic window and a collection of movie star pictures on the wall.
The Franks were discovered by the Nazis in August 1944, one month earlier.

Returning to the Scene of the Crime: Part III
My last two blogs have been called “Returning to the Scene of the Crime”. As you hopefully remember, they’ve been about how much fun it can be to visit a place that features in a book you’ve read. And that this thrill can be even greater when you get to revisit a place you’ve written about. For the final part in this blog trilogy, I’d like to switch to a more serious aspect of the same subject……

Any tips for writing politics and political intrigue? Especially non earth based politics
these are some very general "this may or may not work for you" points that inform how I tend to think about that sort of stuff
individuals rarely do things, and when it seems like they do, it's usually much larger groups finding it beneficial to elevate a comprehensible figurehead for some reason or other
people, being animals with needs, tend to do things for reasons even if they're not good reasons
borders follow land features, and a jagged border implies as much as a straight one because political entities tend to hold onto things for reasons
things often happen for very stupid and frustrating reasons, the more mundane, the more impenetrable
not everyone remembers the actual reason they started doing something, but they can find new reasons if need be
even true misunderstandings tend to spring from a material interest in understanding things a certain way
administrative hypocrisy is rarely irrational or even unconscious. it usually just means there is a reason to obscure and distort a more inconvenient interest
every level of government bureaucracy moves faster than an individual could possibly imagine while also moving slower than an individual could possibly see
the larger the territory, the more administration, the more delegation, the more fractured the centralisation of power
annexation is rarer than the average person assumes it is, and client/puppet/etc states are rarely called such by name
the tradition of dead generations hangs like a nightmare
there is no such thing as a truly singular government. everywhere in the world (and off of it, if that were the case) is several smaller places in a trenchcoat, all the way down forever
there is no sharp line delineating culture, religion, and law
the problem with political conspiracy is that everyone loves talking about how clever they are for being part of something clever. there are no true secrets
the average person, the atomic individual, actually doesn't care that much about the letter of the law. this is also true at all levels of administration

Dear Jungkook, Honestly, I don’t know what to write or even how to write to you. I don’t know how I will present this card to you, or how you will even take it. Or what will you think after reading it. But what I know is that I love you. I have loved you for as long as I can remember. I have loved you everytime you annoyed me, teased me, protected me, held my hands, patted my head, hugged me… I have loved you from the deepest corner of my heart. And I think it’s the right time to let you know this one secret that I hid from you. Hope you aren’t angry. But most importantly, I hope you don’t feel pressured to say yes just because I am your bestie. I know you probably don’t feel the same and it’s okay. But if there is even the tiniest consideration in your heart for me, not as a friend but as a partner, then please come to the park near our elementary school. I will be waiting for an hour from the time you receive this letter. – Xoxo Y/N.
It was graduation day when you decided to deliver the card to your best friend. However, after the ceremony Jungkook basically vanished.
You looked for him everywhere you could, only to find him in the annex building.
His face was flushed, as if he was embarrassed. He was looking in every possible direction, as if to avoid the person standing right in front of him.
Before him stood Jung Mido, a well-known figure in your university since she was the student body president.
“Mido-ya I- uh I really like you, will you-” he got cut mid-confession as Mido rose on her feet and placed a kiss on his lips.
Jungkook looked starstruck and so in love.

November 9, the fateful day of the Germans in history
Nov 9, 1313: Battle of Gammelsdorf - Louis IV defeats his cousin Frederick the Fair marking the beginning of a series of disputes over supremacy between the House of Wittelsbach and the House of Habsburg in the Holy Roman Empire
Nov 9, 1848: Execution of Robert Blum (a german politician) - this event is said to mark the beginning of the end of the March Revolution in 1848/49, the first attempt of establishing a democracy in Germany
Nov 9, 1914: Sinking of the SMS Emden, the most successful German ship in world war I in the indo-pacific, its name is still used as a word in Tamil and Sinhala for a cheeky troublemaker
Nov 9, 1918: German Revolution of 1918/19 in Berlin. Chancellor Max von Baden unilaterally announces the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II and entrusts Friedrich Ebert with the official duties. At around 2 p.m., the Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann proclaims the "German Republic" from the Reichstag building. Two hours later, the Spartacist Karl Liebknecht proclaims the "German Soviet Republic" from the Berlin City Palace.
Nov. 9, 1923: The Hitler-Ludendorff Putsch (Munich Beer Hall Putsch) is bloodily suppressed by the Bavarian State Police in front of the Feldherrnhalle in Munich after the Bavarian Prime Minister Gustav Ritter von Kahr announces on the radio that he has withdrawn his support for the putsch and that the NSDAP is being dissolved.
Nov 9, 1925: Hitler imposes the formation of the Schutzstaffel (SS).
Nov 9, 1936: National Socialists remove the memorial of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in front of the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig.
Nov 9, 1938: November Pogrom / Pogrom Night ("Night of Broken Glass") organized by the Nazi state against the Jewish population of Germany.
Nov 9, 1939: The abduction of two british officiers from the Secret Intelligence Service by the SS in Venlo, Netherlands, renders the British spy network in continental Europe useless and provides Hitler with the pretext to invade the Netherlands in 1940.
Nov 9, 1948: Berlin Blockade Speech - West Berlin mayor Ernst Reuter delivers a speech with the famous words "Peoples of the world, look at this city and recognize that you cannot, that you must not abandon this city".
Nov 9, 1955: Federal Constitutional Court decision: all Austrians who have acquired german citizenship through annexation in 1938, automatically lost it after Austria became sovereign again.
Nov 9, 1967: Students protest against former Nazi professors still teaching at German universities, showing the banner ”Unter den Talaren – Muff von 1000 Jahren” ("Under the gowns – mustiness of 1000 years", referring to the self-designation of Nazi Germany as the 'Empire of 1000 Years') and it becomes one of the main symbols of the Movement of 1968 (the German Student Movement).
Nov 9, 1969: Anti-Semitic bomb attack - the radical left-winged pro-palestinian organization “Tupamaros West-Berlin” hides a bomb in the jewish community house in Berlin. It never exploded though.
Nov 9, 1974: death of Holger Meins - the member of the left-radical terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF) financed in part by the GDR that eventually killed 30 people, dies after 58 days of hunger strike, triggering a second wave of terrorism.
Nov 9, 1989: Fall of the Berlin Wall - After months of unrest, demonstrations and tens of thousands escaping to West Germany, poorly briefed spokesman of the newly formed GDR government Günter Schabowski announces that private trips to non-socialist foreign countries are allowed from now on. Tens of thousands of East Berliners flock to the border crossings and overwhelm the border guards who had not received any instructions yet because the hastily implemented new travel regulations were supposed to be effective only the following day and involved the application for exit visas at a police office. Subsequently, crossing the border between both German states became possible vitrually everywhere.
