31 Day Horror Challenge
25. Favorite found footage horror movie.
Ti West has been getting a bit of attention with the X trilogy nowadays but one of his more underrated films is The Sacrament. It's a loose retelling of the Jonestown massacre with a great performance from Gene Jones.

THE SACRAMENT- 2013 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Jakes sister is a former alcoholic whos been missing for years. She reaches out and tells him shes been living off the grid (in a cult).
Jake and a few of his fellow reporters travel there to cover it for a story and hopefully rescue her. At first things seem positive but soon things turn eerie and they are caught in a fight to survive....
Based on the jonestown fiasco.
Pretty interesting movie. I will say that everything plays out exactly as you expect at every point, no surprises. But remains intriguing and benefits from a great peformance from Gene Jones as the cult leader.
Directed by Ti West.

The Sacrament (2013)
Tumblr media
Summary: Photographer Patrick (Kentucker Audley) and his coworkers Sam (A. J. Bowen) and Jake (Joe Swanberg) travel to utopian community Eden Parish when Patrick receives a letter from his sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz) inviting him to do so.
Deeply unsettling and based on real events. Washed-out look adds to starkness, and ending genuinely tense and borders on downer.
Rating: 4/5

2023 Horror Challenge: [44/?]
↳“You wanna go pokin' around other people's business you go right on ahead. But if you put your hand into the dog's bowl, don't be surprised if you get bit." The Sacrament (2013) dir. Ti West
Plot: A news team trails a man as he travels into the world of Eden Parish to find his missing sister, where it becomes apparent that this paradise may not be as it seems.
Starring: Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Kentucker Audley, Amy Seimetz & Gene Jones
Another Ti West movie watched. lol All that's left are his more obscure ones but we'll see about those, assuming I can even access them in the future. But this is considered his first mainstream horror and goodness, this one turned very dark towards the end fast. I vaguely knew about the real-life Jonestown Massacre that served as its inspiration but man, he really went there. Very heavy. It's a slowburner as usual with him, which isn't for everyone, but I think it really fits perfectly for this one. As well as it being found footage, I liked the reasoning behind that because it gave all the logic needed for them to continue filming the way they do, being VICE journalists. There are camera shots that don't necessarily make sense in my opinion later on in regards to that though, so that's one thing I gotta be nitpicky about. But I did believe the world created here and I think that's what adds to the fear factor because it does feel real. It's literally something that happened, just put in a more recent time than the 70's. I definitely was squirming when it got to the climax though because man, it was getting wild. You knew there'd be at least one survivor but it was a ride getting to that end. I don't know where it stands with his other ones but I did prefer this to The Innkeepers so there's that.

I guess technically The Sacrament was a horror movie? In that there was blood and death and a feeling of being horrified.
I was just looking for something fun. Maybe a monster or two.
4/10 stars. Well written, set out to do what it meant to, I never want to watch it again.
