I love “The Innkeepers”. It made me think of a hotel I once stayed at that was known to be haunted. It even had a ghost tour. It was the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas… Also, this movie is directed by Ti West, who gave us the cinematic masterpiece that is “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever”. I kid, it’s “X” and “Pearl” and this year’s “MaXXXine”. 😝

The Innkeepers (2011)
Tumblr media
A movie can only be considered a ‘slow burn’ if something actually happens. Atmosphere and mood carefully laid out can be a real horror movie treat, waiting for the payoff as tensions ratchet up. Which makes the first half hour of Ti West’s The Inkeepers totally worth it. Thrill as Claire tries to lug a big trash bag into the dumpster! Gasp as towels are delivered to rooms! Cling to your seat as coffee orders are cut short by the overly talkative barista! It would be something of a misnomer to call this a slow burn, then again, as the film never quite seems to settle on where it goes with tone and pacing. Perhaps the first warning sign is that the opening fright shot across the bow is just a filmed version of that cheap jump scare literally everyone has been shown by a friend as a prank, and it doesn’t get better from there. Scares almost universally fall flat, either cheap fakeouts or the usual milky-eyed ghost shit you’ve seen before. Any tension is further undermined by the fact that it doesn’t appear to even take the scares that seriously: Claire overreacts to every situation she’s been thrust into, shrieking and screaming as if she were the banshee haunting these halls and not some long-departed woman. Elsewhere it caves to corny camera movements, pushing in on a frightening image with a shaky snap zoom. Is this some kind of joke being pulled on all of this, or did Ti West sit at the monitor each day and say “Yep, I’m making a bona fide instant haunted house classic!”
It certainly doesn’t help that Claire and Luke managed to somehow one-up even Zak Bagans as the most annoying person around hunting for ghosts. Every single interaction in this movie is awkward and stilted, with our two heroes bristling at even the slightest prospect of grabbing towels, or Lucas flip-flopping wildly on his position on ghosts. Normally it’s the easiest thing in the world to sympathize with service industry folks, but there was something about these two that made it a hard sell. I dunno, maybe it was Claire breaking into a sleeping woman’s room to harass her. Eh, that’s just normal at a boutique hotel, part of its charm.

2024 MOVIE LIST

I re-watched The Innkeepers (2011)
Since I'm so excited for Ti West's "MaxXxine" (coming to theaters soon) I decided to go back and watch one of his older films.
Two employees of a closing down colonial style hotel spend their nights searching for ghosts.
"The Innkeepers" is a sloooooow burn horror film. And, I'd say that a good bit of it is somewhat lighthearted. The main character, a young 20 something woman, is bubbly and fun and a little eager and excited believe in ghosts, or at least to have the adventure of looking for a ghost. Deeply relatable to most people in their early twenties, looking for fun in the mundane. The movie often takes on her character as tone, and it's really more about enjoying your time with her and the fun she has creeping herself out.
Honestly, the film really captures what I think the thrill of actually ghost hunting is. You sit around, basically scaring yourself, while nothing much is really happening. But, you can never be too sure if what you heard or saw wasn't some unknown paranormal entity. Ghost Hunting, real or fake is kind of exciting. I think that's the point of the whole film. West is taking us on a mini ghost hunting expedition, which is always being interrupted by real life, until he starts ratcheting up the spookiness, inevitably delivering a fantastic and scary ending.
This is definitely a well directed and enjoyable movie with a good cast and a nice atmosphere of spooky thrills. The characters have their flaws, but you certainly don't want to see anything bad happen to them, which makes for a much more tense ending.
Sure it's not perfect, and the pace is going to turn away anyone who can't handle slow burn horror. But, this is one that is a real creeper if you watch it alone in a pitch black house. Especially since West plays on our natural fear of the dark in several scenes, and so expertly.
Ti West is a really good horror director, often elevating tired old ideas and making them shine. He's got a love for horror, and while some find his pacing to be too slow, I think it works far more than it fails.
