To be honest, January felt a lot like an extension of December. As if December just kept going and going. The 31st, 32nd, 33rd...

And so on.

We actually closed out 2024 with an impromptu trip to hang out with family from December 30 through December 33. Not really to do anything but to hang out, live there a bit, indulge this other life we lead when we're in California. We even managed a party with friends to celebrate the ends and beginnings of things. :-)

January was a month of firsts. For example, we're not exactly grandparents but we have a granddoggy named Teddy. He's a light brown shepherd of sorts and Kimmer totally spoils him. Even before his first day staying at our place she'd bought him a bowl a mat and a big box 'o dog biscuits. She also pulled Linzy's old sleeping bag from the garage and arranged it in the living room so Teddy had something familiar in the house. Plus, Kimmer picked up a green stuffed toy just in case. :-)

Another first was that we bought a cat tree for our cat, Quarter. Kimmer was thinking he'd benefit from such a thing and, one day when she was browsing about the Shoreline GoodWill, she found it, had me check it out and think about it, then buy it, then bring it home, set it up. And presto!

Quarter took right to it. Although I've gotta say that he's kind of lazy about it. He could, if he wanted to, climb/leap the first three levels to the top which we call the Crow's Nest. Instead, he realized early on that the third level is more easily accessed from the desk right next to it. So that's what he does. He jumps up on the desk and almost walks across to the third level. If he's feeling ambitious, he'll leap straight up and into the Crow's Nest from the desk.

Bit of a cheater-pants, if you ask me.🤨

Now, we did get the cat tree for Quarter but Dinker uses it, too. The two cats actually took to playing Storm the Castle and Defend the Fort with Dinker as the attacker and Quarter as the defender. Quarter will actually poke his head out the bottom of the Crow's Nest and swipe and Dinker... and Dinker will swipe back.

Other times, though, we find Dinker in the Crow's Nest and Quarter on his blanket at the base of it. No claws out. No hissing. Just everyone being chill and all is right in the world. :-)

The next thing's not a first time but yeah. Kind of. We wanted to start in on the Harry Potter franchise again, top to bottom, in January. Only we didn't want to play any more streaming games. Bad enough the movies went from Netflix to Peacock to Netflix to Max. So we figured we'd buy the DVDs at GoodWill, Value Village, and Half Price Books. Which is how it worked out except for two things.

The first is we had to buy two Order of the Phoenix DVDs because the first one failed about halfway through. And then the second one failed at the same spot. So we gave up and watched the rest of the movie through a YouTube rental.

The second thing is that the movie we bought to kick off our seventh maybe eighth time through the franchise was called Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone.

Whoops.

That's the title of the British version of the book and, of course, the movie... for Brits. Yeah. We somehow wound up with a European version of the disc, encoded for European DVD players. Popping this disc in, we immediately got a Not available in your region message because yeah. European DVDs don't play over here. Like, at all. So we went back to the store and bought a proper Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone and everything was right in the world. :-)

A coupla things that added to the vibe of an extended December: my friend Hilary gave me a Lego Severus Snape that's super adorable and owns a prominent piece of real estate next to my edit workstation at home. Linzy also had something for me in January: my December birthday card she didn't give me on my birthday but instead gave to me toward the end of January. Hand-crafted. Very cool deal.

Speaking of Linzy, she had a bit of a month. She traveled with The Little Lies (Fleetwood Mac tribute band) to perform at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. She flew out the morning after a Midnight High gig, went straight from the airport to the rehearsal space in San Francisco and practiced 'til evening. The next day, the band got to visit The Record Plant in Sausalito just the other side of the Golden Gate bridge. This is where Fleetwood Mac recorded their iconic, classic album, Rumours. Bit of a visiting Mecca experience for this group of musicians. :-)

A coupla weeks later, they're in Los Angeles at The Regent Theater. Prior to these California performances, the band did shows at The Moore in Seattle and Aladdin in Portland. These performances are an integral part of a live podcast tour, a co-production of the You're Wrong About podcast and the American Hysteria podcast. We actually flew down the 23rd to the 26th to catch this show, once again living a few days in Irvine with family and embarking on quite the adventure the night after we arrived to probably the sketchiest, most dystopian part of L.A.. The evening involved many moving parts including, yes, the dystopia but also an authentic Mexican dinner along a historic street, a walkabout in Union Station, the logistics of trying to find the kind of parking that seems, you know, safe, a bar where the bartender is also the DJ for all the vinyl records up on the back wall of the bar that take their turns on a turntable, and finally, of course, the live podcast itself.

Having seen the show, I still can't properly describe it. It's a bit podcast, a bit history lesson, a bit of a play, a bit music. It's an eclectic bunch of ingredients that are expertly crafted to work. Rumor has it the show may move east in the fall. New Orleans maybe. New York maybe. And if they do play New Orleans... I'm pretty sure we're going. :-)

So January, Linzy had a bunch of solo restaurant/winery gigs, a Midnight High show, the two shows in California, and then finally a songwriter's showcase at the Rabbit Box Theatre a block off the Pike Place Market. This was three songwriters taking turns on stage, this time around Linzy pulling songs from the vault and doing those old songs quite a bit of justice.

Makes us wanna hear more of those early tunes. :-)

On the professional front, Kimmer's still wall-to-wall-to-wall work and doctoral studies. I'm being a little more experimental, taking some AI tools out for a spin to see how close to a travel show I can get using high-resolution photographs the AI manages brings to life.

Not necessarily a professional thing but a work thing, UW Video treated its full-time and part-time staff to an evening of bowling and appetizers. Great team-building experience. Great opportunity to talk shop, especially with the photographers, bringing them up to date with what we can do in Post these days.

Most importantly?

I didn't embarass myself. 105 and a 115. :-)

I also started up a new blog, My Brain on Creativity, that focuses a little more intently on Creativity and Neuroscience. I actually started up two new blogs. The second one is called Very Angry? Count to 100. It's a space in which I'm working out how some of the foundational lessons I learned in college pursuing my Communication degree and my Psychology degree... I'm working out how they apply today.

Anyway... that was our January.

A small, seemingly unremarkable fern that only grows on a remote Pacific island was on Friday crowned the Guinness World Record holder for having the largest genome of any organism on Earth. The New Caledonian fern, Tmesipteris oblanceolata, has more than 50 times more DNA packed into the nucleus of its cells than humans do. If the DNA from one of the fern's cells -- which are just a fraction of a millimeter wide -- were unraveled, it would stretch out to 106 meters (350 feet), scientists said in a new study. Stood upright, the DNA would be taller than the tower that holds London's famous Big Ben bell. The fern's genome weighed in at a whopping 160 gigabase pairs (Gbp), the measurement for DNA length. That is seven percent larger than the previous record holder, the Japanese flowering plant Paris japonica.

Happy Birthday!

Well, technically tomorrow 2 June, but I somehow finished this today.

I thought I'd have finished the Krang infection comic by now so I could have a happy birthday ending, but we're not there yet.

I uh never draw backgrounds or like to colour, but I love fully coloured pieces and well here we are. Trying my best to create something out of my comfort zone.

As a bday gift to myself I'm going to watch the new spiderverse tomorrow evening!

Okay so Thursday night one of the bands in which Linzy performs, Midnight High, performed at Neumos near Seattle U.

The next morning, Friday morning, she's on a plane to San Francisco for a Little Lies performance that's threaded through the live podcast shows You're Wrong About and American Hysteria. The band's gear is packed together and transported separately.

Landing in S.F., now it's directly to the rehearsal space for rehearsal.

Friday evening: settle into the band's Airbnb.

The next day, Saturday, the first item on the day's agenda is transporting the gear set up in the rehearsal space to the venue. The venue being San Francisco's iconic Palace of Fine Arts.

2pm the band has a tour scheduled of The Record Plant in Sausalito just the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. This is the record studio where Rumours was recorded. A bit of a Mecca for these members of a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. ☺️

4pm it's back to the Palace of Fine Arts for set-up & soundcheck.

They take the stage at 8.

Sunday evening, Linzy's on a return flight.

Monday, her workweek begins again.

All of which I point out because I thought it was a seriously cool experience back when I traveled on a production crew both nationally and internationally as we shot travel series shows. I loved the travel. I loved the access. I loved being on the road one week, two weeks max. One time for three weeks. I loved the whole schedule and logistics and profession of it.

And I am impressed.

I am impressed to find my daughter, not doing the same thing, but a similar experience that's tied to a live podcast taking to the road... and a band that's gone with them to perform for paying audiences.

(@bearerofendlesspain You know... Only after writing this whole thing do I realize that I had read this prompt wrong... WHOOPS! I read it as "Poison Ivy and Tucker are eating blood blossoms to extinction." and not as what was likely intended which seems to have been more along the lines of... "Batman rogue: Poison Ivy. Conflict: Tucker is eating blood blossoms to extinction." ... Which in this particular context are way, WAAAAAY different ideas! I could have saved myself a lot of distress if I had read it correctly... >.> But ah well! Whoops! Hope you enjoy this anyway! Thinking about a plant going extinct like this was quite distressing for me to write! :D)

"Hey. Thanks for helping me out with this, Tuck. And you know... For keeping all of this a secret from Sam." Danny smiled in appreciation to Tucker as they began to break ground with their shovels. "She would probably HATE what we're doing right now!"

"Yeah, of course, dude! It's no problem at all. The more we get rid of these blood blossoms here in Amity Park, the better it is for you and all of the ghosts in the area! Besides, I never want to even think about having to eat another one of these things ever again!" Tucker shivered at the memory of having to eat blood blossoms to save Danny and Sam's lives.

With that, the two got to work killing the bush of blood blossoms. They were digging to expose the roots so they could tear the plant from the ground whole. That made things easier when they would shove the entirety of the plant into a plastic garbage bag along with the other blood blossom bushes they had already uprooted. Once they were done with this area, they would take all of the bushes they had uprooted over the course of the day and bring them to an incinerator where they would destroy the plant- burning the flowers, stems, roots, and seeds all in one fell swoop. They had to make certain to destroy the whole plant, including the roots and seeds, just to make sure that there was no chance of the bush growing back from just its roots or more bushes getting planted in their place. They had been making good progress in wiping out the blood blossoms in this area. They just had a few more to uproot here and they could move on to the next area! They had been at this for months and were getting pretty close to their goal of exterminating blood blossoms in the whole of Amity Park!

But just as they were pulling this bush from the ground, a beautiful red-haired woman started charging towards them. "What do you think you're doing!???" she roared. The woman was clearly frantic.

Danny and Tucker glanced to one another. "Removing a bush...?" Danny answered, not certain what was going on.

"'Removing a bush' ... Alright, kids, stop what you're going and step away from that 'bush' right now!" She demanded. And while Danny complied, letting go of the plant and backing away, Tucker didn't and instead began to haul the shrub from the ground.

"Come on, lady. We're just removing some weeds. This isn't anything to freak out over." Tucker turned to roll his eyes at the woman where Danny could see but she couldn't.

"A 'weed'? A 'WEED'!!? You really don't have any idea what you're doing do you!? Do you even know what these 'weeds' are!?" The woman was obviously distressed, and growing more agitated by the moment.

Tucker let out a flippant breath. "They're blood blossoms, duh."

"Yes. And this specific species of blood blossoms are native and endemic to the Amity Park area!"

"Okay...? So what?" Tucker wasn't entirely certain what she was talking about.

"And they're an endangered species!"

"Oh... I- I didn't know!" Danny swore, suddenly feeling bad about what he and Tucker had been doing.

"So?" Meanwhile, Tucker had the opposite reaction. "What are you, a botanist or something? Who cares if these blood blossoms go extinct?"

"Yes. I am a botanist..." Danny was watching as the horror on the woman's face was slowly turning into fury.

"Tucker...? I think that you should just leave the plant alone..." Danny cautiously advised.

"What!? After all the work we've put into killing off all of these stupid flowers? Now you're starting to sound like Sam! We've been at this months! No way I'm stopping now!"

"MONTHS!???" That was the absolute last straw. These children have been exterminating these poor, defenseless, endangered plants for months!? Dr. Pamela Isley- more famously known as Poison Ivy- had heard enough. These boys were going to pay. "You might not care about these flowers dying, but I do! The land- The Green does! You need biodiversity in order to have a healthy ecosystem, and these flowers play an important role in that! You can't just go around, carelessly digging up and killing innocent, endangered plants without there being... Consequences."
