wrote this blurb about my beautiful ship but was too lazy to format it sooo plus this is not proofread and only after reading I realized that some of this sounds dirty so forgive me
@raessketches
__
miri was so invested her book that she didn't even notice that someone else was in the room until an arm curled around the waist of her dress. "aah!" she yelped, dropping her book on her stomach and groaning.
peder laughed, scooting closer to miri's cot on the floor. "what are you doing here?" she asked, surprised.
"visiting my betrothed, of course," he replied with a grin.
"but i'm sick! and you should be preparing for the winter festival!"
peder rolled his eyes. "you're far more important than a festival."
miri groaned again. "well, you needn't have made your presence so clear by startling me!"
peder tilted his head. "oh, did i hurt you?" miri nodded, and he slid the book off of her stomach and rubbed her stomach with the fingertips of the hand currently wrapped around her waist.
"you're going to catch my cold," miri claimed after he had stopped and his palm rested on her stomach. he placed his head on her shoulder, even though he was still taller than her sitting on the floor when she was on her cot.
"and so?" he replied haughtily. "a cold isn't going to stop me from staying by your side."
miri was about to reply when she heard footsteps on the foyer. "quick, hide before your father finds you!" she gestured toward a sack on the floor next to her cot.
peder's eyes widened as he pulled his arm back and tucked himself into the sack. miri giggled as her older sister walked into the room.
immediately, marda's eyes wandered toward the sack. "what's in there, miri?"
"a goat. kick him for me, will you?"
marda burst into warm laughter as peder scrambled out of the sack. "hey!"
"what are you doing here, peder?" marda questioned curiously as miri straightened on her cot.
"a boy can't visit his wife-to-be? you all are acting as ignorant as a lowlander!"
marda, being wise and deciding to avoid any more argument, grabbed what she came in for and turned her back. "i'll leave you to it. but know, if your mother or father asks where you are, i will be sure to tell them that you're snuggling with miri in the stream."
miri tilted her head back and pursed her lips. "marda, as my sister, i do love you, but i truly despise the privileges given to your mouth. i should wash it with the stream's water itself."
marda didn't say anything more but chuckle as she exited the room. as soon as she was out of sight, peder nudged miri's side. "move."
miri scooted over as peder made himself comfortable next to her. she coughed, and wondered if she should move away, but peder cupped her face and brought it closer. she buried her face into his chest, coughing again lightly at the smell of the goat fur all over him.
quietly, he unbraided miri's long brown hair, and planted a kiss on the top of her head. miri smiled.
"the winter festival doesn't matter that much to me, you know?" he said, all of a sudden. "if you're not there, with who will i do the ribbon dance? with who will i stare at the stars with when night falls? with who will i laugh about young miri's curiousity and spark?"
miri nodded, only half hearing his words. she soon fell asleep, while peder stared at the ceiling, still holding her tight as he listened to the joyful singing of the villagers outside.

honesty the princess academy sequel was wild because like. I think most fantasy for kids woth princesses in it is accepting monarchy as a genre convention, it's not engaging with it politically, it's treating it as being about as real as a dragon really. But not the Princess Academy. We're gonna have our working class pov character almost be ~seduced~ (quite literally. a hot boy is involved), by an anti-monarchist revolution, create propaganda to help the ruling class that feels very comfortable threatening the economic prosperity she brought to her community, and cheapen the magical manifestation of the connection her community has to its traditional labor and craft by giving a weaker version of it to the monarchy by virtue of them having exploited her community for centuries

Princess Academy, Chapter 8:
"My name is Miri, like the pink flower that grows around linderbuds. Do you have miri flowers in the lowlands?" "No, I think miri must be a mountain flower."
HOLY SHIT AESIOTHEWIOHTGERIOSNFOIWERYHGOIWEMTIOHOHIOTGWENFIOWEHIOTGEWOGHFUIDSDUIGDFHUIGBILBHDFIJHBRDLMBDFKLJBNKRGDFNIGNTF
How did you choose your username?
Short answer: it's pretty & I've had it for a while & decided to stick with it
Long answer: one of my names (my first name, that I got at birth & decided to keep) can be shortened to "Miri", which has been always been a nickname for me. When I was a kid I read a book called "Princess Academy" by Shannon Hale and loved it. One of the things that made me interested in the book in the first place was that the main character is named "Miri" after a local flower on the mountain where she lived. (I later found out that that flowers called "miri" do exist irl, tho are different from the ones in Princess Academy.) Miri flowers were described as small, pink (I love pink 🩷) flowers that appear delicate but thrive against the odds.
Like me.
I'm also from the USA west and spent several years of my life in Utah, which are famous for ⛰️mountains️. While I have issues with living in the US and Utah, the geography of where I'm from is a part of my identity, and I do love the mountains. And I love flowers.
I'd sometimes call myself a "mountain flower" because of that. It evolved into smn I used as a username/pen name/etc, and more recently I decided I wanted to use "the mountain flower" as my artistic signature.

Hey Miry what are some fun (or maybe angsty) headcanons you have for the boys, including Chain?
Hmmmm 🤔 ok let me think
Sky: I know most people headcanon Warriors as the field medic, but I feel Sky is also versed in first aids and is really good at it, he has excellent bedside manner. Like the knight academy probably taught him all about it, so the 3 medics of the gang are warriors, hyrule and him. I also believe he has an impeccable stitch technique, like barely leaves scars at all. Really dexterous with his hands too, thanks to his wood crafting and harp playing, he's really good with them hands lmao.
Four: he's a blacksmith sure, and knows a lot about making weapons and maintaining them, but I like to believe he's also really good and making stuff out of leather. Like he knows how to make leather belts and pouches for the weapons his grandpa makes or leather clothes as protection in battle. Idk just a very crafty little guy that offers the entire deal aka a weapon and the leather belts to carry it, all in one service hehe
Time: I like to believe he lost his eye in a very mundane non heroic way, like maybe he fell off a rowdy horse and landed in the worst way possible or a farm centric accident. He makes up different stories about how he lost it, every time someone asks, he changes it, some stories are batshit insane and some others are super normal. He actually has told the real way he lost the eye in between the fake stories, but no one believes him. He thinks it's hilarious btw.
Twilight: I've mentioned before that I headcanon him to be a very sensitive guy, like small things can make him tear up aka a baby animal absolutely makes him want to start sobbing lmao. I like to believe he gossips and talks a lot with his epona as wolfie, like when you're in wolf form in twilight princess you can talk to animals and epona is so sweet with him when you talk to her, they are soulmates man. The guys do something dumb and he turns into wolfie just to walk to epona like "can u believe those guys??" Epona knows everything tbh like he tells her everything, she's the only one who truly knows his woes over losing midna.
Wind: I love to believe the little guy can legit control the winds, like the wind waker is a way for him to channel his magic, but he can control the wind unconsciously, too. When he gets really mad, the winds pick up speeds around him, or if he's happy, a gentle breeze circles around him, etc. His hair is always blowing in the breeze even when he's inside doors, and there's no wind. It just does that.
Legend: Excellent gardener, has a talent for growing plants, flowers, and trees. They flourish under his care. Extremely particular about soil and water and shadow/light for his plants, he not only has an apple orchard, but also grows veggies and rare flowers. Ravio maintains his garden under extreme rules and guidelines lmao ravio is not allowed to sell the apples or veggies from legend's garden, but legend encourages rav to use them for cooking instead.
Hyrule: disney princess aka animals love him lmao typical guy who befriends every single creature he meets, he could pacify a bear if he wants to. His fae part is what makes him have such an affinity with nature in general, I see him as the elves from LOTR who can feel and communicate with trees and they guide him. It's why he never uses maps, he doesn't need them.
Wild: using LOTR as my base for headcanons again lol but I see him like aragorn in the sense that aragorn is a human who was raised by elves so he feels a strong connection to elf culture because of it. I picture wild to be the same, but with the zoras, since he was childhood friends with mipha, we can imply he spent A LOT of time in zora's domain as a child. He is way more versed in zora customs, language, holidays, etc, than the hylian ones. It's also why I feel the older zora are so pissed off with him in botw, like they saw him as one of their own for so long, utter betrayal that he didn't protect their princess (mipha) and failed them all lol he has some zora mannerism in the sense that sometimes, he eats fish raw LMAO when he absentmindedly ate one in front of everyone the first time everyone was shocked for a while lmao
Warriors: absolute nervous wreck, always riddled with anxiety, really low self-esteem, is probably screaming 24/7 inside his head at all times, but is EXCEPTIONAL at faking it, like fake it til you make it is his way of life lmao he exudes over confidence and is always worried about his looks as a way to hide how much of a mess he truly is. Time & Wind has seen him at his worst and know that he's a great actor, which helps him cause he can stop pretending around them for a while
And now my link lmao
Chain: All bark, no bite. He is ironic and sarcastic and shows himself as a tough guy, but he's actually a sweetheart, and things get to him pretty easily. He learned pretty early on than carrying his heart on his sleeve is a really bad idea around the Bounty Hunter guild, since soft nice guys don't last long, so he replies to hurtful comments with sarcasm and a tough attitude, when in reality he's really hurt lmao he also jokes to cope, he'd rather throw a joke or two at you than really open up and talk about his feelings.

As war threatens to engulf the land, lifelong friends reunite for an adventure that will change their lives and shape their world forever . . .When Tanis, Sturm, Caramon, Raistlin, Flint, and Tasslehoff see a woman use a blue crystal staff to heal a villager, they wonder if it's a sign the gods have not abandoned them after all. Fueled by this glimmer of hope, the Companions band together to uncover the truth behind the gods' absence--though they aren't the only ones with an interest in the staff. The Seekers, a new religious order, wants the artifact for their own ends, believing it will help them replace the gods and overtake the continent of Ansalon. Now, the Companions must assume the unlikely roles of heroes if they hope to prevent the staff from falling into the hands of darkness.

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson (2023)
The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?
Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger (2009-2012)
Alexia Tarabotti is labouring under a great many social tribulations.
First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?
Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire (2016-present)
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children  No Solicitations  No Visitors  No Quests
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.
No matter the cost.
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (2004-2009)
For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies--elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy--the Marat horde--return to the Valley, Tavi's courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war...
The Belgariad by David Eddings (1982-1984)
Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But that was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the dark man without a shadow had haunted him for years. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved - but did not know? For a while his dreams of innocence were safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while...
Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers (2021-2022)
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered.
But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They're going to need to ask it a lot.
The Once and Future King by T. H. White (1958)
Once upon a time, a young boy called "Wart" was tutored by a magician named Merlyn in preparation for a future he couldn't possibly imagine. A future in which he would ally himself with the greatest knights, love a legendary queen and unite a country dedicated to chivalrous values. A future that would see him crowned and known for all time as Arthur, King of the Britons.During Arthur's reign, the kingdom of Camelot was founded to cast enlightenment on the Dark Ages, while the knights of the Round Table embarked on many a noble quest. But Merlyn foresaw the treachery that awaited his liege: the forbidden love between Queen Guenever and Lancelot, the wicked plots of Arthur's half-sister Morgause and the hatred she fostered in Mordred that would bring an end to the king's dreams for Britain--and to the king himself.
Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong (2001-2012)
Elena Michaels is the world’s only female werewolf. And she’s tired of it. Tired of a life spent hiding and protecting, a life where her most important job is hunting down rogue werewolves. Tired of a world that not only accepts the worst in her–her temper, her violence–but requires it. Worst of all, she realizes she’s growing content with that life, with being that person.
So she left the Pack and returned to Toronto where she’s trying to live as a human. When the Pack leader calls asking for her help fighting a sudden uprising, she only agrees because she owes him. Once this is over, she’ll be squared with the Pack and free to live life as a human. Which is what she wants. Really.

Princess Academy - Shannon Hale
Tumblr media
This was a reread, and I loved it just as much this second time around as I did when my much younger self read it the first time.
Fourteen-year-old Miri lives on a mountain where her people quarry a special stone that they supply to the rest of the kingdom. In their isolated village, they have little knowledge or care about what goes on in the lowlands. So the last thing anyone expects is for a royal messenger to arrive and announce that the next princess will be chosen from Mount Eskel.
An academy is established to train the rough mountain girls in everything they need to know to be princesses; in one year the prince will come and select his bride. But as Miri and the others know, the mountain is unpredictable. A lot can change in a year.
I love how this book subverted my expectations by taking a rather cliché premise and turning it into a story about the value of education and the power that comes from knowing your worth and banding together as a group. Everything about this book is perfect and you should read it!
And I've recently discovered it's a series?! So those are going straight to the top of my TBR!

What will be Classics in fifty years ( Children's and YA Edition)
With news that "Night Watch" is set to become a Penguin Classic, the first Discworld novel to attain Classic Status, I have been wondering what books published in the last thirty years will become Classics.
1990's
Sabriel: The first book in the Old Kingdom series was published in 1995, and has pretty timeless themes; more importantly it's obscurity today will help it gain classic status.
Holes: The 1998 novel has been called "The last Classic novel of the 20th Century" as it deals with racism, poverty and human rights abuses alongside a story of friendship, justice and bravery.
2000's
The Mortal Engines: This 2001 novel tells the story of a world where larger cities eat smaller towns and villages, told from the POV of two children, Tom and Hester, and the unique concept of cities on wheels makes it a classic in YA Sci-Fi.
Twiight: The 2005 novel tells the story of a teenage girl, Bella Swan, who moves to the town of Forks, Washington, where she meets a strange boy named Edward Cullen. After discovering he is a vampire, Bella falls for him. Criticised at the time for being "female focused", it has undergone a renaissance as a result of the backlash against both "Cringe Culture" and "Not Like Other Girls" characters. Indeed, the renaissance saw better appreciation of both Edward and Bella as characters and interest in the side characters while acknowledging the racism, misogyny and general bad choices prevalent in the books.
Uglies: Released the same year as Twilight, Uglies tells the story of fifteen-year-old Tally Youngblood as she looks forward to her sixteenth birthday, when she undergoes plastic surgery to become a "Pretty". Throughout the series Tally learns the dark truth of the world she lives in. With themes such as beauty standards and mental health and how they affect people being openly discussed in the 2020's, Uglies is more relevant today than it was in 2005.
The Hunger Games: This 2008 book and sequels is destined to be a classic, with the characters, plot and themes being universal. The ending is bittersweet, in that Panem is peaceful but with a cost: many people, including Finnick, Rue, Prim and Cinna, are dead while those that survived are left with trauma, a fact made clear wth Annie, Katniss and Peeta's kids; Annie's son represents a new era where children don't have to die while Katniss and Peeta's children represents unity.
2010's:
The Hate U Give: This 2017 book tells the story of sixteen-year-old Starr, who witnesses her childhood friend get shot by police. The book deals with themes such as racism and justice. In fact,
2020's:
Meet Me At The Moon Tree: The most recent book on the list, this 2023 novel tells the story of ten-year-old Carina, a girl dealing with several changes; the death of her father and moving into a new home. Wishing to honour her father's wish, Carina explores the woods to search for a "Moon Tree". The themes includes grief, science, change, nature, friendhips and healing.
Might be Classics in the future:
2000's:
Percy Jackson: This YA series centres on a Son of Poseidon, Perseus "Percy" Jackson, as he learns of his half-blood heritage. Sent to a camp, he learns how to control his powers as well as going on quests.
Princess Academy: This book series centres on fourteen-year-old Miri, who lives in a mountain village. After priests of the kingdom of Danland receives a vision of a potential princess living in the mountain village, a school is set up with the girls of the mountain as pupils, and Miri is one of the girls. While at the Academy, she discovers that she is good at Diplomacy, a skill she later teaches to the merchants in the village.

Nostalgia is...
Sitting in my room as dark as I could make it, to watch the branches sway and count the stars while listening to Owl City
Playing video games until too late with friends or boyfriends, sitting in silence, or falling asleep in their company
Reading Princess Academy - over and over...daydreaming about what it'd be like when I'd finally had my first kiss, and having to catch my breath when Peder and Miri held hands
Watching Tangled on repeat, thinking "When will *my* life begin?"
Listening to Dodie Clark, Tessa Violet, and so many more, and all their whimsical lyrics about heart, love, and fantasy. I was so in love with the idea of falling in love
Writing bad poetry and thinking I was deep and dark
Taking quizzes and writing posts like these to get to know myself better, and process my feelings
It was dreaming of what adult life would be like, and thinking it'd be this magical thing. Maybe it is, and maybe it isn't, but I do think Adam Young was right when he wrote "ain't life beautiful and strange"
I'm grateful for the beautiful and the strange, no matter where it leads me next

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
2006 Newbery Honor Book
Adapted by Addie F., Allie Van B., Bexley G., Spojmia I., and Sophie D. of Trailwood Elementary School (2023)
From Overland Park, KS
Judges' Remarks: This movie did a great job of zipping through the plot very quickly while still keeping the story understandable, with energetic and fun performances from everyone! I liked how this group went the extra mile with the costumes (dresses for all the girls in the princess academy, and the tiara, and Olana in a black dress to show she's in charge). The green screen was used well to indicate when the girls were at the ball, or in the bedroom, at the cliff, or in the garden of the academy. The voiceover and intertitles worked well to keep the story on track, and there was lots of good visual storytelling (like showing Miri hard at work washing dishes at th beginning, or when they're thrown in the closet) so that we can more or less understand what's going on even without the narration or the intertitles. Entertaining and high-spirited!
