An Extremely Niche Genre 🥹

Films about being a closeted trans person that are also love letters to the media we loved as kids

It's maybe a bit self-aggrandising of me to put The Prince alongside these two much bigger projects but I'm genuinely a little proud to have contributed to this extremely niche genre? I just watched The People's Joker for the first time and realised this was A Thing I'd unintentionally made an example of.

I think one of the major points of difference is that whereas Glow and People's Joker both have protagonists who aren't "good at" their assigned gender, Hotspur in The Prince is very good at "being a man" despite it being unsustainable and fake. Different experiences I guess! Those two make me wish I'd chosen a more accessible art form to write a love letter to - 90s TV and comic book movies are both a bit more mainstream than Shakespeare - but in fairness if I had it wouldn't have been as authentic!
