I’ve been writing Ch 21 for a month, just dying to have someone point out the error that is actually Plot in Ch 20. It’s been consuming me.

I am wiggling like a Golden Retriever who is begging for someone to notice the Trick I just did. I want people to be in on the [Spoiler]! I am making the face of someone who just told a horrible convoluted pun but the worst part of that metaphor is at this point I haven’t even posted the punchline.

These are all things that are normal to want and possible to achieve.

truly i'm replaying hades right now because i'm addicted to its gameplay but sitting through all of its dialogue a second time is making me realize that it's actually kind of bad. it's hard to articulate what exactly it is about it that bothers me, only that i feel that everyone speaks like they're in a fanfic and zagreus is the enlightened self-insert that uses therapy speak on everyone on a way that feels unnatural. idk

Among all the other stuff that happened in Ch 9, I find the interactions between MC and Pirithous and Theseus hilarious. Will these two pop up again?

They might. I can't promise anything, because in my brain right now the sequel is a pile of amorphous plot sludge, but I do have a little idea niggling in the back of my head about them.

more stuff about heroes,, this time specifically about Phaedra <3

i think the whole story about Phaedra and Hippolytus makes sense whether you like the version where Aphrodite curses her to fall in love with Hippolytus, or the version where it happens of her own volition. i think she was only a moment away from tragedy with or without the gods, IMO.

i love the idea of Phaedra and Ariadne being tight... i think they would've done everything together. i have a little hc of Phaedra, just like Ariadne, being completely awestruck by Theseus' bravery when he arrives with the other Athenian youths; he's young, courageous, sure of himself,,, and let's not forget he's pretty cute too. i think, for a young girl, probably a girl who absolutely despises the fact that her father is murdering so many children her age without a second thought, the idea of Theseus is very appealing. so i think she's got a bit of a crush on him. but it's a harmless one... it's not serious; she wishes nothing but happiness for Ariadne and Theseus when they conspire to leave Crete and save Athens. they are good together. this is why, when Theseus leaves Ariadne, and Phaedra has no choice but to marry him,, it's such a difficult decision for her. she has to marry her sister's love. and i do think he was the first ever love of Ariadne's life. that's hugely important.

Phaedra and Theseus' marriage begins unhappily. he doesn't truly want to marry her because she reminds of what he's lost; Ariadne. she's just the younger sister.. the next available. she's a stand-in. Phaedra isn't happy either... she doesn't want to stand where her sister should be. she's worth more. her sister is worth more. theirs is a marriage of convenience, and both of them never fail to remind each other of that. i think they have some sweet moments; moments where they stop trying to attack each other and find peace. but most of the time, they don't talk. if they talk, they fight. Phaedra becomes isolated; she doesn't know anyone in Athens. she stays, holed up in the palace. Theseus spends his time with Pirithous,, drinking, hunting, sleeping with other women. if he spends time with Phaedra, the gods will take her too, perhaps.

when Hippolytus comes to Athens, kicked out from the Amazons' island because very soon he will become a man and they can't have that, i think it is very refreshing for Phaedra. Hippolytus is nothing like Theseus except in looks. he's gentle, soft-spoken, polite. i'd imagine, amongst the Amazons, he wouldn't speak much-- the women would speak before him always. he's not a pushover either-- he argues with his father about marriage and being a prince; it's not the life he wants. all these things place him higher in Phaedra's eyes. and it helps that Hippolytus is very cordial towards Phaedra. he respects her... sees her as a person... something that Theseus doesn't seem to do anymore. this is why, when Hippolytus offends Aphrodite and Phaedra gets cursed to fall in love with her step-son, i think that it wasn't much of a push. she is abandoned by pretty much everyone in her life; her father and her other siblings don't try to bring her home, her mother is completely placid, her sister is who-knows-where, her husband is inattentive and treats her with contempt. then this young boy comes along and actually listens to her. hears her out. he acts like a decent human being and he is not under any obligation to. how could she not find solace in Hippolytus' presence?

i personally like the idea of the gods interfering in Phaedra's life, less so to punish Phaedra, and more so to punish Theseus. i won't go into this here because i'm rambling now, but the tragedy of Phaedra's life is that her story would happen with or without the gods interfering... i dont think there was ever any happy-ever-after for her :/
