the reasons I think Fëanorians should not get the Silmarils back
it's a better and more compelling story this way. their fall from grace and the way they corrupt and destroy themselves because of a hopeless quest is peak tragedy, which would be ruined by their success.
it's a justified consequence of the Kinslayings: the right of ownership is not and cannot ever be more important than somebody else's right to live.
it's also a justified consequence of them stealing and destroying someone else's priceless semi-sacred property: Teleri will never get their ships back because Fëanor burned them out of spite, so it's only fair and square that the Silmarils are never returned to him or his heirs.
if Stuff is so important to you that it causes you to ruin the lives of all your children, losing that Stuff forever is probably just karmic justice. (see also: "if more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold...")
And no, nobody else should have the Silmarils either. It's clear that having a Silmaril messes with your brain. At the end of the Silm, they should become public property. I would go even further than this and say that the actual resolution of the Silm, where nobody can have them and the single surviving jewel is carried as a star that everyone can indiscriminately see by a guy who never expressed a desire for it, is probably the only correct one.
#I believe that in Tolkien's mind (or the author's intent))#the ownership of the jewels defaulted to zero after the Kinslayings#which would track considering how the murder of Finwë and the theft of the Silmarils#is mirrored by the Kinslaying at Alqualondë#and how the jewels burn Morgoth's hands when the deed is done#it's like the tragic futility of the Oath of Fëanor were foreshadowed before he even knows the Silmarils are gone#so when Beren and Lúthien steal the Silmaril from Morgoth's crown#in Tolkien's view they become its rightful owners#and this right is further empowered by the fact that they were not trying to get a Silmaril for its own sake#but as the thing that would allow them to be lawfully together#i. e. their motive is their love for one another#which perhaps also plays a part in why they are allowed to succeed#and why they don't seem to ever lust for it in the way others do#but are able to leave it in Thingol's hands after they come back to life#Silmarillion

I do love Celebrimbor takes where post-death/rebirth he actually has very little to say to his family until they show some signs of remorse or personal growth from the atrocities they committed in Middle-earth.
#let him be angry!!#he left for a reason!!#and I don't think he wants comfort from a guy (MAEDHROS) who slaughtered an entire culture and killed and kidnapped children#if he's going to anyone for comfort it's cousins and other extended family#he left Curufin and Celegorm before the Second Kinslaying was even on the horizon because he couldn't defend them anymore#I cannot IMAGINE the horror of learning from a distance of the things they did after that#I honestly cannot imagine he is very interested in having a relationship with his father/uncles after this#at least not without some SERIOUS repenting on their parts#rambling#celebrimbor

One thing I think about a lot is that when Nargothrond falls, it is heavily implied that as good as everyone perished or, if not, got captured. Like, unlike with the Fall of Doriath, there is no mention at all of any refugees removing to the Mouth of Sirion - and yet, I assume that is very likely where Celebrimbor, at least, went? I definitely think he would have fought, but clearly he survived and neither Doriath nor Gondolin really were an option for him, and I doubt even more that he would have gone back to his family.
And there are a lot of implications to all that, but maybe the one that keeps me up most is that this means he would have likely been there when the refugees of Doriath arrived, when they told of what his family did. That his father is dead. What would he have been thinking? What would the survivors of Doriath been thinking? Like, I know there were technically several different camps to some extent, but I doubt they would have been wholly separate, especially upon arrival. What kind of horror to find someone who looks just like one of those guys who just slaughtered your friends and family. What kind of horror to look like someone who just committed such horrors.
He also would have been there when the third kinslaying occurred, or at least very close to it. What an experience, to end up on the other side of it. To see exactly what might have become of him had he not foresworn his father years ago, and also to see yet again what became of his family. Like yeah, everything before/during the Nargothrond Disaster would have already been formative for him and his future choices, but I do feel even being in the vicinity of all of that would have been such a dire reinforcement of all those convictions and reasons that made him disavow them in the first place. And especially in terms of the third kinslaying, it's also why I personally really doubt that there is a chance at any kind of reconciliation with any of the brothers, whether it's his father or I don't know, Maedhros or Maglor. Like, I just don't think there is any coming back fromt hat, really, if there ever was.
#*mine#mona's rambling#tolkien#the silmarillion#celebrimbor#feanorians#silm#like i mean obviously you don't need to be affected to realize That Shit Sucked#but can you imagine looking down a sword and seeing your uncle who helped raise you. how do you even BEGIN to process that#there is a whole other matter of tyelpe being in/around the camp that had a silmaril but that's a post for another time lmao#also i mean galadriel - would she have been there after doriath's fall?#I'd assume she would have fought there too so that would make her end up on the other side of a feanorian kinslaying TWICE#like. these are the things that make me want to chew through drywall PLS#did they know elros and elrond before they were taken? what did they think maglor and maedhros would or wouldn't do to them? LIKE#i don't even think there is a solid straight-forward answer to that that's right or wrong i just like bouncing it around my head and going#insane. btw#anyway these tags are a mess don't mind me

3319 - Downfall of Numenor. Tar-Miriel leads a greater force of the Faithful away.
(green // blue means two main options, red means i need to think about it more)
The main details I'm figuring out right now are
does Celebrimbor still die at Eregion - I don't think he's getting captured/tortured, but he could still die in the battle. On the other hand, he could probably survive by using Narya & Lomion using Nenya, but that would definitely have repercussions further down the line
how does Idril's deal work - I'm currently thinking of Idril exchanging the location of Gondolin for her family's guaranteed safety, because it seems in character for Reverse Idril? But on the other hand, even if I limit it to immediate family at the time of the oath (tuor, turgon, earendil) then idk where turgon dies? Maybe Maglor can kill him but that seems kind of random
where and how does Turgon die
how does Prince Elrond's character even work
how does Numenor still fall when factoring in Prince Elrond - I'm thinking that the morgoth death cult gained enough traction during the time sauron was there that even after Elrond kicks him out, the cult still sticks around and reemerges later? The Fall still happens, but they never go to attack valinor and there's a good deal more Faithful (maybe 40-60%?)
#silm#silmarillion#not art#reverse gondolin au#basically elrond is giving me a Lot of trouble here#i tacked an extra 30 years onto the FA (so the SA dates are mostly shifted up by 30 years to balance it out; hence elros being king in SA 2#this means e&e were adults during the Fall of Gondolin and the war of wrath and all#so instead of 'kind as summer' elrond of the last homely house in rivendell#we have gondolithrim veteran/dragonslayer Prince Elrond of Imladris Stronghold#and later the Bastion of the Faithful of Numenor#ironically enough he turned out way more feanorian when not raised by feanorians#instead of sirion e&e's defining Childhood Trauma was the gondolin kinslaying#in which mae and aredhel duel to the death while screaming at each other about fingon's fate and the Oath#and argon and elenwes deaths on the helcaraxe#also elwing fully died trying to protect them in this one#and then e&e were like 20something and sons/grandsons of two Lords durign the FoG so obviously they ended up fighting there too#and then again at the war of wrath#and by the mid SA elrond has already lived through so many wars he's running rather low on hope#so Prince Elrond still tries to be kind but is also substantially more willing to threaten people if need be#after eregion he founds imladris as a haven but also an impenetrable fortress#he saw the fall of gondolin and he knows that rivendell couldn't last forever#but he believes he can make it last long enough to defeat sauron first#or at least push him back so that the refugees of eregion can rebuild and survive#meanwhile celebrimbor takes up the last homely house role#but yeah Prince Elrond is pretty interesting#he intervenes more with numenor bc hes watching them self destruct and knows (bc foresight) exactly what would happen#so he tries (eventually in vain) to prevent it by disowning and exiling ar pharazon#and later exiling sauron around the time of the burning of nimloth#but it's too late and the morgoth cult already gained enough traction#on the other hand there's a lot more Faithful led by tar-miriel

it's the best when i see falmari ocs who still remember the kinslaying at alqualonde and still begrudge the noldor. even better when they mention a feanorian or fingolfinian by name
#as much as i adore the mention that they hearkened specifically to elwing during the war of wrath and have not forgotten#what the exiled noldor did to them#i need specific names. specific memories! who among their family was killed? how did those family members die? how did they learn#of those deaths? who killed them? etc. etc. etc.#also need to see more falmari and reborn iathrim finding connections and sympathy among each other in their shared#experience of being on the receiving end of a kinslaying from the noldor#kinslaying at alqualonde#first kinslaying#falmari#teleri#tolkien tag#tolkien#the silmarillion#the silm#silm#lord of the rings#lotr#jrr tolkien

Ok, but i can just imagine, many years post canon in valinor when legolas is visiting the twins at the same time as the kidnap dads are visiting elrond:
Maglor, trying to be friendly with his grandsons’ friend: so... what are your thoughts in regards to the kinslayings?
Legolas: idk, i mean it’s not like i was directly affected by it so i can’t exactly hold out too much judgement. Also, while horrible, the shit ya’ll did does not even come near my top 100 fucked up things i’ve witnessed while in middle earth.
Maedhros: wasn’t- wasn’t your grandfather, oropher, from Doriath though?
Legolas: lmao, yeah, but if you think he didn’t contemplate murder, specifically regicide, a time or 100, then you’ve clearly never met him.
Legolas: besides, he once tried to destroy the world way back in the days before Orome stumbled across the elves, he has no leg to stand on.
Maedhros:...
Maglor: your dad, though?
Legolas: both my father and grandmother chose to stay with the silvans when they split off during the great journey. So even if grandfather Oropher had died in doriath, it wouldn’t have affected my existence.
Legolas: so like i said, it’s really not my place to hold a grudge against you when there are plenty of elves that were actually affected by it doing the job just fine.
.——————————————————
Btw, this is my Miriel and thranduil are twins au so don’t come at me with “but that’s not canon!”
#lord of the rings#lotr#silmarillion#the hobbit#lotr elves#legolas#thranduil#incorrect tolkien quotes#incorrect lotr quotes#silm incorrect quotes#oropher#trans thranduil#shamelessly pushing my ‘miriel and thranduil are twins agenda’#maglor#maedhros#legolas’s thought process really just boils down to ‘not my circus#not my monkeys’#there are so many other things for him to be pissed off at the kinslayings don’t even come close

POV your girlfriend puts the devil to sleep and you opt to steal his treasure instead of killing him.
My dad casually says ‘[Beren] could’ve killed [morgoth].’
Yes, Beren wasn’t considering this possibility. But: why not? I will not call Beren self-serving. But he clearly was not serving the war effort.
Very few of Tolkien’s characters are proactively good, and very few are proactively evil.
One cannot seperate morally passive characters.
#I’m going to get argumentative and opinionated in the tags#Okay go#do not insinuate that Beren is morally superior to maedhros#I said do not insinuate that Beren is morally superior to maedhros#Beren? He is shown once to go after his father’s body#and after that he is self-serving#Maedhros is shown to give up the crown#And after that he is self-serving#Is there proactive good? None evidenced#Beren did not kill Morgoth and Maedhros did not stop the fourth kinslaying#Are they so different? I say no#Now#I am sick and tired of there being two sides to every opinion#One is feanorians are morally superior#The other is Lúthien’s line is morally superior#the only line we can separate as doing proactive good is fingolfin’s#From Fingon’s multiple mentioned deeds of valour#It indis#to earendil#Feanorians are almost never shown to be proactively good#Finarfinians are almost never shown to be proactively good#beleg and mablung? I would argue they are good#Besides that? It is hard to separate any character morally speaking#silmarillion#silm#Silm meta#beren and luthien#beren erchamion#beren

[Excerpt from Sorrow Beyond Words: Collected Testimony of the War of Wrath, 4th Edition; ed. Elrond Peredhel. Archive of Cîw Annúminas, inaugural collection]
“Simply reaching Menegroth was a struggle. Doriath had become a twisting nightmare of overgrowth and rot and mists, as Morgoth’s power warred with the remains of the Girdle and our old songs. Ai, our home, our haven! I know the name of every holly in Region, before the exile. We found deadfalls surrounded by dozens of animals who’d lain down beside the trees and rotted before they died. Blind moose more antler than flesh staggered towards us even after a dozen arrows. Vines covered in dripping thorns reached for our eyes. The cherry trees were overladen with fruits that smelled like gangrene. Deildhod stumbled into a nest of maddened vipers, and only escaped because their tails were all tangled together into a festering mass and could hardly move. We never saw or heard a single bird. I’m amazed we lost no one in that whole push through Region. No, I speak a lie. I know how we passed through with nothing worse than scrapes. Elrond was with us, and the ghost of Melian’s love still recognized her kin.
“Esgalduin had nearly been dammed by one of Hírilorn’s fallen boles, but the bridge still held. We crossed and reached the ruined gates, wrought twice and broken twice. Within there was only darkness to be seen; we knew not what manner of horrors Morgoth had sent to infest the city, but Ingwion was unwilling to leave them at the rear of his forces as he moved north, if it could be helped. Celeborn stood at Elrond’s right and myself at his left. Far less an honor guard than the heir of Elu Thingol and Melian Besain deserved. Yet in those dark days it was all the honor we could muster. King Dior Eluchíl had known thirty-six summers when he was unrighteously slain. Queen Elwing Nimaew thirty-five when despair took her to the sea. Lord Elrond Peredhel beheld the city of Elu for the first and only time in his twenty-ninth summer.
“Elrond stood before his inheritance and Sang. He sang a lament, for the lost endless years of joy and peace, for deep halls lit by birdsong and echoing with wisdom, for the Forsaken People who awoke the forest and earth with many voices, for the works of beauty never to be seen again on this side of the sea. He sang a promise, that the glory of Menegroth will be remembered in the songs of Middle-Earth for as long as its children endure. He sang thanks, for the protection the halls granted us until it could shelter us no more. As his song at last ceased, I thought I heard nightingales answering him.
“Stars shone on his brow, and his hair glistened as the vault of night, and the memories of our once-eternal bliss in the woods of Thingol’s realm under Elbereth’s gifts arose in my mind. Let Oropher dream of a deep hall for his own; let Celeborn reign where he will at his wife’s side! I knew in my heart, as the echo of nightingale songs faded, that there was no lord or king I would ever stand beside save Elrond Elwingion.
“The living stone in which our kingdom once thrived knew his voice, and at long last laid down its burden and passed. The darkness over Menegroth was lifted, and we went forth into its corpse, and no beast or orc could stand before us. I do not sing of what we found and left behind when we cast down the bridge and gave leave for the river to flood the caves. It is not worth remembering.”

WHAT TAROT CARD ARE YOU ?
JUSTICE — what would you do to ensure justice? you know full well i don’t speak of lofty ideals and courts and magistrates, dearest. what would you do to those that hurt you? if I dropped them in your lap, what would you do? what kind of pain could you possibly inflict upon them? you are right to do so. you are right to want to do so. ignore the screaming, dearest, you are the hand of justice now, and they hurt you. do not look too closely at their faces, dearest. you are within your rights. you spell out your own rights, now. are you happy about it? are you certain that this is the right person you hold by the hair? does your anger hurt less now?

#DASH GAMES //#her concept of justice and her concept of what makes things even is entirely ? it has its basis in what she considers fair and the black#and white nature of her own morality like it’s#her conceptualization of justice is set wholly in courts and the legality of the situation and the importance of one’s sworn word in the#society she was brought up in#like IT IS based in ideals - it IS based in court#and like there has just 😭 been so much. there’s so much - she can’t punish everyone who’s attempted to diminish her or hurt her in any#sort of way because it’s all blurred into one consistent stream of things that she has ? she needs to let go of - she can’t respond to#every little thing when the allegations flung at her most post the birth of her children are that of high treason#like there’s so much simmering anger that she just buried deeper and deeper until she can pretend it doesn’t exist#she doesn’t hurt alicent she doesn’t hurt helaena she’s even reluctant to attack KL after Luke’s death due to her fear of kinslaying like#she has her limits and that still is ? The people she would perceive as innocent and people like Alicent who ? in the book viserys loved an#in the show who she herself cared for like it’s#‘ does your anger hurt less now ? ‘ no! it does not#because the price she’s paid to successfully reclaim what they stole from her is ! too! high !#the price she never wanted to have to pay which she said at the start of it was too high of a cost was paid anyway and she’s fundamentally#fucking miserable because of it#like visenya is dead luke is dead jace is dead and viserys is missing and likely dead and all she has left is joff and aegon#and like the notion of the opposition to her succession was something she expected at that point. But what hurts the MOST is the way they#went about it. What hurts the most is what happened as a result of the shock she experienced from it#like she miscarried from it and she lost visenya - and the subsequent confrontations afterward led to the losses of her other children and#it’s like ??? they could’ve called a great council - they should’ve called a great council but no one did#what hurts is the fact the excuse is the vows sworn to her were ‘ stale’ and thus the people who turned their backs on them didn’t need to#uphold them so they could go about oathbreaking with their honor in tact when it’s like ? ( to her ) it feels as if she wasn’t even worth#the grace of them being honest with themselves on what they were doing#like it’s ?

I’ve been thinking about Maglor being a better swordsman than Maedhros and a more skilled fighter. Maedhros has more brute strength, more presence on the battlefield and he’s more terrifying, but if it came to a single combat between the two of them, Maglor would have a greater chance to win.
Or rather, if their memories of each other were erased and they didn’t know they were brothers, then Maglor would have a greater chance to win. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to fight Maedhros as he would have fought someone else and would still lose.
#silmarillion#maglor#maedhros#he was the only one of finwe's grandkids to survive not counting galadriel#and he did survive all the kinslayings#and all the other battles#including the nirnaeth#and he was the only son of feanor who killed a named easterling leader at the nirnaeth#so this is vaguely based on canon#but just vaguely

wrt valonqar speculation, if the valonqar is allowed to be someone else's unrelated younger sibling, let's stretch that to use the "but maester aemon said gender doesn't matter in hv" clause to mean the valonqar is not even restricted to being a younger brother either. that makes just as much sense as noting the prophecy says the valonqar, not your valonqar. what if cersei is killed by someone else's sister who keeps a lannister vendetta list? no, i don't mean arya stark, dummies. i mean her undead mother, lady stoneheart!
but catelyn was an eldest child, not anyone's younger sibling you say? wrong! "Her two older brothers had both died in infancy", meaning she was actually a younger, thirdborn child. if the valonqar is not restricted to cersei's own brothers, and could be younger siblings in general, why not count someone who was a younger sister only to two dead brothers she never knew? of all the non-lannister younger siblings, did anyone else specifically dream of strangling cersei? ("dream of riding to King's Landing and wrapping my hands around Cersei Lannister's white throat and squeezing until her face turns black." compare that to the valonqar prophecy of "the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you." why else would grrm ever repeat the unique phrasing of "white throat" in such a way? obviously it has to mean something!) and the chapter where cat speaks of her dreams of choking cersei (Catelyn V, aCoK) comes right before her chapter revealing the existence of two dead elder brothers (Catelyn VI, aCoK). that can't be a coincidence, people! grrm wants us to connect those two facts in the back of our minds, so when the true valonqar is revealed it will be shocking but make perfect sense in retrospect to those few of us who have been paying attention.
c'mon now, folks! who has a higher lannister threat level: the former lannister dog who killed his brothers' goons only in self-defense and became a lamed dog; the knight of flowers who has only ever killed baratheon soldiers, his own men included; some child whose little hands probably can't strangle anyone; or the spirit of vengeange hunting down all frey- and lannister-affiliated enemies, who had cersei lannister near the top of her hit list before her death? i rest my case. accept no other non-lannister valonqar substitutions.
#valyrianscrolls#asoiaf#asoiaf meta#cersei lannister#catelyn stark#not a serious hypothesis but i do think it makes more sense than any other non-lannister valonqar theory#its not like i'm thrilled abt cersei dying by ipv and jaime ending his rship w her that way either#but the only valonqar theories i hate worse than tyrion and arya are every rando w no personal significance to cersei#if one doesnt want to acknowledge the probability of jaime kinslaying his exlover just say the whole prophecy is bs#stead of inventing some other crazy answer to fit the valonqar so cersei can still end up strangled to death#so have an unhinged rant ive been thinking of for a while bc thats what all you twinslayer deniers sound like#(c)lsb#give me Cersei Lannister

apologies for the lack of art lately, i just got new glasses and am still adjusting :(
in the meantime, anyone have thoughts about lomion and tyelpe's relationship in the reverse gondolin au?
#not silm#not art#my stuff#the current Fun Bit In Progress is lomion tyelpe and gil's family portrait#the current Frustrating Bit In Progress is fiddling with the TA timelines#do you think gil should go by a different name? i do like how gil galad fits for both lomion and tyelpe's stars#ereinion also works in a less-vague sense given that both his dads are kings lol#and artanaro works in the feanorian sense#idk how to differentiate him though#like how maeglin is lomion and celebrimbor is tyelperinquar (bc gondolin quenya) and elrond is prince elrond#hmm#also saruman is probably getting kicked out of the white council early on lol#tyelperinquar (almost died because of annatar; also recently widowed because of annatar/sauron): i am not making that mistake again :///#he still has massive issues trusting himself that are even worse without lomion to talk things through/balance each other out#so i dont think he would do the active kicking-out#but he would definitely have a Foreboding Sense of Suspicion#and prince elrond (having trust issues in the opposite direction) would show saruman the door in three seconds flat#overall this white council is a lot more traumatized#a great deal more suspicious and equally dysfunctional#the moment the kinslayings get brought up nothing gets done for the rest of the meeting bc#galadriel and tyelpe spend the whole time glaring at each other#given their respective Everything the table probably catches fire

Feanorians: *committing a massacre*
Elves born after the valar reveal themselves: oh no! It’s a kinslaying! Those feanorian monsters have broken our most sacred rule!
Finwe, Miriel, Olwe, Ingwe, Elwe (from where he’s locked up in Elu’s mind) and every other elf born pre orome, who have all definitely killed their fellow elf, and not always out of self defence:
#lord of the rings#silmarillion#lotr#the hobbit#lotr elves#finwe#miriel#feanor#elwe#sons of feanor#ingwe#olwe#there were definatly factions of elves that were literally at each other’s throats pre Orome#they absolutely went to battle with each other#the elves absolutely killed each other pre Orome#kinslaying is a social construct#brought about by the valar
