right, so.

obvious disclaimer: yes, some Migratory Slash Fans are wanky and annoying, but we regularly Discourse about that and I feel like I spend more time around Migratory Het Fans so they get more chances to annoy me and i would like to vent.

2nd disclaimer: i shall be using "het" to refer to m/f pairings and yes this is not always accurate but this is the terminology we're currently stuck with, pls someone fix this (thanks in advance).

so.

The Migratory Het Fan is someone who moves from fandom to fandom in much the same way as a Migratory Slash Fan, only they can fly a bit under the radar due to having more canon pairings to work with and because it's not seen as "weird" in quite the same way that slashing is. But they share the traits of primarily interacting with fandoms/canons through a shipping lens and thus ending up in fandoms with Popular Het Pairings or Canon Het Pairings that appeal to them in some way - careful observation will often show a MHF making characters fit their favourite tropes with as much gusto as a MSF turning protagonist and sidekick into their fave Any Two Guys. Again.

First thing: some MHFs, mostly ones who have stuck to canon or semi-canon pairings, are really weird about non-canon pairings and slash pairings, conflating the two and asking with bizarre bewilderment why anyone would be pairing those characters who spend a lot of time together and who clearly value each other as friends. This is quite hard for me to take seriously as an argument, as to me this seems hopelessly naive about fandom in general and about what they themselves are doing/have done with different characters. It can also come across to slashers as an offensive refusal to accept that shipping is shipping and we're all freaks here. Oh, good for you, Susan, your E-rated OOC fluff about your faves is so much less weird than that person's E-rated OOC fluff about their faves. The normies are sure to leave you alone when they're picking on the internet weirdos.

Second thing: this can also involve a lack of understanding about what happens when you have a canon ship that conflicts with your OTP. As I have aged into Fandom Old-ness I increasingly feel like the best approach is simply to ignore such conflicting ships and pretend they don't exist (not an ideal solution, but there isn't an ideal solution, as I am about to explain). And some people just don't like doing that, that want to fit their canons a bit better, or they want to write about how the other pairing is Bad and worse than their fave both artistically and morally. Which is annoying, yes. But it can be really hard to discuss a canon without having to discuss one or another canon pairing. There isn't really anything that can be done to stop people getting mad at each other over things like this... except you can Just Fucking Block People and this will hide a lot of it from you.

My point, which I lost somewhere - the 'rival' shippers are not going on about your pairing all the time because they're "obsessed" with it or with you (or at least most of them aren't), they are doing so because it is "in the way" and this must be dealt with in one way or another. Having been on every possible side of such situations over the years I can assure you that it sucks for everyone, nobody likes it, and see above about Just Ignoring That Part Of Your Canon. (Aside: long rants about why this or that ship is Terrible, Actually are generally preaching to the choir. You ever met anyone who realised via a tumblr post or a tweet that their OTP was Terrible, Actually and promptly changed their ways and jumped to the rival ship? Well, exactly.)

Another thing: a lot of het fic is generic and OOC, but this is true of a lot of slash too and I don't actually think either category is better or worse at this part of fandom than the other. Sometimes the only reason the m/m porn doesn't feature any bodice-ripping is that neither man was wearing one. I think that a lot of MHFs (I won't guess a percentage) do just skip from one fandom to another producing generic romance novel content for every pairing they get into, just as MSFs often do, and that this is just a general Shipper Problem, not one with any connection to the genders or sexualities of the characters involved. You can say "but MY ship is CANON!" all you want but that loses some of its supposed power when you discard that canon as easily as the MSFs discarded your fave female character, reinventing your (random example to avoid offence) pair of ruthless space pirates as (again random) 21st century accountants, one of whom is moonlighting as a dominatrix and the other is looking to explore his interest in submitting to a hot chick. This is no longer a canon pairing, you do you but the hill you're trying to die on is now a double-decker bus. So haud yer wheest.

I think that's all I have enraging me this evening on the topic of Migratory Het Fans. I actually suspect that most people would consider me to be one of those, including myself on occasion, so I'm not slagging off the concept, just the annoying things they sometimes do.

One day, Riddle had found himself awake more earlier than usual, so he figured he’d get up and get ready since he couldn’t fall asleep again

As he’s getting ready, he flinched as a pair of arms made their way around his waist, you then buried your face into his shoulder and inhaled, he smelled like roses and you loved it. It was a comforting scent, but with him having woke a bit early, you were still half asleep and wanted him to go back to bed

“You’re up way too early. Come back to bed babe…” you nodded off, placing a small kiss on his exposed shoulder, then relaxed, dozing off soon after. Riddle then turned around to kiss you in the forehead, then flicked that same spot, making you cry out in pain

“Ow, what was that for?” You pouted and rubbed your head as you sat back down, Riddle chuckled to himself, going off to finish getting dressed

“You know I have to wake up early. You should join me, dear.” Riddle only needed his tie left, you then suddenly had the urge to tie it for him. You found yourself already walking over to him, you didn’t know why, but you simply felt like giving it a try

Much to your dismay, you failed miserably. The uniform that was tailored to you by Crewel didn’t have a tie like the rest of them, since you didn’t know how to tie one, he made it so you wouldn’t struggle with it every morning. You didn’t know why you went through the trouble of trying to tie his tie for him but you did and now here he was, trying not to laugh at your struggle

“Need a hand, my rose?” He chuckled as your pout only got worse, you ignored him and still struggled with the fabric, until you felt his warm hands wrap around yours. He pulled his hands away to quickly fix the fabric around his neck and then cupped your cheeks, leaning in to kiss you. After a few seconds he pulled away, leaving you feeling dazed

“I think I’ll have to teach you sooner or later my dear. However it was quite endearing watching you struggle.” He smiled as your pout turned into a frown, you then rolled your eyes at him

“Come on. Let’s get ready for the day, y/n.” You sighed and walked off with him, him still laughing about your struggle with his tie as the both of you made your way to your classes, maybe you’d mess his tie up later to get him back. Or maybe you’d kiss him in front of everyone so he’d learn not to make you mad 🫢

The lion had been irritated ever since this morning and you were just about fed up with his attitude. Until you saw him staring at his tie, pondering if he should even put it on. You weren’t exactly good with ties, but you figured you’d try for him

After wrapping it around the lions neck, his face dangerously close to yours, you tried to focus on tying the damn thing, but to no avail. Leona’s smirk kept growing as he watched you struggle with the stupid fabric, your pout only growing into a frown as you continued to struggle with it

“Looks like ya need a bit of help there, herbivore.” Leona’s chuckle pissed you off and you tightened it around his neck to fuck with him, then ran off giggling as he struggled to get it off of himself

“You little shit, get yer ass back here!” Leona ran after you, you having got a head start from the lion

Since Azul’s dorm uniform has a tie you’d best believe this boy has endless ties with him, he’s got dressers filled, bae he’s a business man, he’s gotta maintain his image somehow

One morning after you two had gotten up, he was busy putting on his shirt when you had walked up to him from behind, kissing his neck and hugging him

“Angelfish, If you’d wanted something from me, you should have simply asked.” He turned around and gently placed kisses around your face, making you giggle. You helped him out with the rest of his outfit, him doing the same with your uniform. All that was left was his tie. You gave it a shot, despite not knowing how to properly tie one around someone

Azul, being the shithead he is sometimes, was trying not to laugh while he watched your struggle with his tie, but you noticed anyway since his shoulders were shaking from his laughing

“Stop laughing!” You become more irritated as you fondled with the fabric, him reaching for your hands, stopping your attempts. He kissed your forehead and pulled away, swiftly tying the fabric

“I think I may need to teach you how to tie a tie, angelfish. After all if we get married later you’re gonna have to tie my tie for me every morning.” He turned around, chuckling as your face turned red from his remark about you two marrying each other

“My struggling was funny to you?”

“Perhaps.”

“You’re a jerk.” You pouted as the both of you walked out into the lounge, where the twins had been waiting.

“Your secret is safe with me my dear.”

“It’d better be.” He smiled at you once more before leaning down to kiss you. The both of you then made your way to school, where you pondered over how you’d get him back later on in the day. Maybe a prank with Jade and Floyd would do the trick.

Jamil Viper:

Jamil never really wore ties as well, his dorm uniform didn’t need one, the only time he wore a suit was because of his uniform. But, let’s say one day, Kalim had been invited to a party in the scalding sands, it was a family party and it was huge. It was formal and both him and Jamil had to go. Kalim mentioned you could come as well, since many people were being invited.

Getting up that morning, you were not expecting to wake up to Jamil taking his shirt off, revealing his shockingly nice build. Your eyes lingered as he put his suit on, you not noticing that he’d noticed your eyes on him a while ago

“You know, your eyes are going to get stuck like that from staring.” His comment made your eyes shoot somewhere else, trying to feign innocence

“What? Me, staring? In your dreams.” You got up and began to prepare for the day ahead of you. Your outfit in the back was a bit tricky, since you were wearing a traditional Scalding sands outfit, in the end you didn’t know if you were getting it right, the fabric kept getting wrinkled and you were just about done with it

You struggled until you felt warm hands trail up your back, sending shivers up your spine. His fingers’ touch lingered as he fixed your outfit, you looking away from him as you knew he was probably thinking about how silly you were for not being able to put it on right. Your thoughts were interrupted as you felt him trail kisses from up your back, to your shoulders, leaving you a blushing mess

Once he had pulled away, you quickly gathered your composure and turned around, wanting to get a good look at your lover. You could definitely say Jamil looked good, really good since he never usually wore suits. The only thing closest to one was his school uniform and that was nothing compared to the outfit he was currently wearing. The suit fit him perfectly, his hair flowed behind his back and you took a strand and played with it.

Noticing his tie wasn’t readied yet, you went to go and fix it for him, wanting to thank him for fixing your outfit.

Although, in the end you only became flustered once more as he smirked at you, finding your struggles with the fabric amusing

“Need help?” You pouted as you tried fondling with the damn thing once more, only becoming more irritated. He then grabbed your hands and kissed them

“I think you’ve done enough.” He swiftly tied his tie and lead the both of you off, your cheeks still a little bit pink after the amount of teasing affection he’d given you. As the both of you took off you pondered on about how you’d tease him later. Maybe making him flustered in front of Kalim later would make him regret teasing you a bit >:)

Vil Schoenheit:

I’m not sure why but I also think he doesn’t really wear ties that often, not unless he’s on the runway or he’s in a movie perhaps, but the only tie you’ll basically see him with is on his school uniform

But of course for HC’s sake, let’s say Rook had decided to host a Gala at Pomefiore, everyone was invited, even girls who were fans from other schools came over to the gala, and of course, you were invited.

You were in Vil’s room, watching him finish his last touch up with his make up. You had gotten ready a while ago, but knowing Vil, he had to make sure he was looking flawless of course. The only thing left was the tie to his suit. You had pestered him about wearing a fancy one since you hardly ever saw him in one, and of course he indulged in your request.

You then walked over to your lover, looking over his outfit before reaching for his tie.

If he told you he wasn’t laughing, that would be a fat fucking lie, his shoulders were shaking as your frustration grew and you became fed up with the fabric.

“Looks like you need a bit of learning when it comes to tying a tie. After all, if your going to become my partner later on, you’re supposed to learn how to tie it for me in the morning.” His comment made you turn red, he then swiftly tied the fabric around his neck and took your hand, then he led you down stairs to the gala

You weren’t sure how to get him back for making fun of you, he always knew about your little pranks and they always ended with him scolding you. Instead, once the both of you entered, you waited until everyone’s eyes were on you

“Is that Vil? Oh my god he’s so handsome!” One girl squealed

“Who’s that beside him though?”

“Maybe his lover? There’s no way-“ you suddenly grabbed him by the tie and pulled him down, then kissed him in front of everyone. Everyone gasped and Vil’s eyes widened as he wasn’t expecting you to do something so scandalous~

“That’s for teasing me earlier. Bye Vil~”

After you pulled away you winked at him, leaving him to gather his thoughts on his own as you left to go and find Rook. He simply smirked to himself as he watched you walk off, he would eventually get you back for that little stunt, and you weren’t going to be prepared for what he was going to do later on.

Idia Shroud:

Let’s say this was during the ghost marriage event, where he was actually forced to look good for once and he had to put on a suit and a tie

Having woke up early with him, the both of you were getting dressed as the event was in a few hours and the both of you wanted to get ready earlier than everyone else

Helping him with his suit, he returned the favor to you, turning you around and fixing your clothes from behind. You fixed your outfit in the front but stopped when you felt his breath fan the side of your neck

“T-the heck? What are you d- Idia??” Your face turned red as you felt him leave kisses along your shoulder. This was out of character for him to do, but sometimes, when the both of you were alone and he was feeling bold, he usually pulled moves on you that left you breathless

“Y-you just looked so good, I couldn’t really resist…” His kisses lingered as he trailed them along your neck. He then gently bit down, making you squeak

“Hey!” You turned around and pouted, him giving you his signature laugh, which was enough to make you forgive him since you loved his cute laugh. You looked down and saw that the only thing he needed left was his tie. You went to tie it for him, but after a while you began to give up as you struggled with the damn thing. Idia’s laughing didn’t make it better

“Y’know, you suck at tying a tie.”

“Shut it.” He laughed once more before tying it himself.

“Let’s go, I want to get there already so I can get this over with.”

After arriving at the Cafeteria, you were shocked as a lot of people had come, making your boyfriend turn even more pale. You weren’t exactly sure how to distract him but an idea suddenly popped into your head and you giggled, making him turn to you, confused

“What’s so funny- mmph?!” You grabbed him by the tie and made him lean down so you could kiss him. People around you gasped as you passionately displayed your affection to everyone. Idia surprisingly leaned into your kiss, finding comfort in your lips. Much to his dismay, you pulled away, making him pout

“That’s not fair y/n…” he frowned and you kissed the side of his lips, then smiled as you walked away

“That’s what you get for teasing me earlier. Good luck!” You laughed and walked off to find one of your friends, leaving him behind to deal with other people pestering him. Idia wasn’t really one to pull pranks on you or get revenge, he’d definitely get you back later though, and you’d best believe you won’t be expecting it 👀

Malleus Draconia:

For the most part, the only time you saw the fae in a tie was when he was wearing his school uniform, his dorm uniform didn’t have a tie and he found them to be a bit tedious

One day, however, that was a different story. There was a gala being held at his homeland and you were invited since you were his lover.

Malleus didn’t need too much sleep, since the fae were different from humans, they required less sleep than humans so, naturally, he was awake before you were.

You woke up to find your boyfriend finishing up his suit. With how good he looked, it was only natural that your eyes would linger for a little bit. Having sensed your eyes on him from the moment you awoke, he chuckled

“Darling, you might make me blush if you continue to stare at me like that.” You buried your face in the pillow of his bed, pretending to sleep so you could hide the small blush that creeped up onto your cheeks. He chuckled and used his magic to pull the blankets off you. Groaning as you rose from his bed, you suddenly felt his hands on your cheeks.

“Morning, little beastie.” He leaned down and peppered kisses all over your face except your lips. He did that to you since he knew it frustrated you. You pouted and pointed towards your lips. He chuckled and pulled away, leaving you to pout even more

“Later my love. Now you must get ready, we only have an hour left since somebody decided to sleep in.”

“To be fair, you kept me up all night so I needed some sleep.” Your shameless comment left him stunned in his place. You giggled as you began preparing yourself for the gala. You had noticed that his tie wasn’t tied correctly so after having finished your outfit, (with the help of his magic), you went over to tie it for him.

Instead of actually tying it like you wanted, you made it worse and Malleus simply chuckled. Despite how hard headed and strong you were, you couldn’t even tie a proper tie yet

“Child of man, do you need my assistance?” He chuckled as he watched your face turn pink. He pulled your hands away and left one up so he could kiss the back of your hand. He used his magic to finish the both of your outfits. You looked into the mirror and you gasped. The both of you honestly looked like you were ready to rule with an iron fist

“You look simply amazing. Truly, you look ready to rule by my side. Let us be off.” He smiled and took your hand.

After the both of you had teleported to Briar valley and had reached the palace, you both walked into the ball. Everyone turned to look at the both of you, some fae bowing and some whispering about the mortal by his side

“Is that a human? How dare they make themselves present at this ball.”

“Are they supposed to be Malleus’ lover?”

“That’s impossible, why would Malleus chose a human-“ getting fed up with the fae’s shit talking, you looked up at malleus and asked,

“Malleus, can you do me a favor and lean over for me please?” He looked confused, but none the less he leaned over for you. His eyes widened, however, when you suddenly grabbed his tie and yanked him towards you, kissing him.

Every single fairy present at that Gala stopped to gasp as you displayed your affection to every single one of them. Malleus simply leaned into your kiss and pulled you closer

Somewhere in a corner of the room Lilia laughed at the display while Sebek turned bright red. Silver had simply chuckled as everyone whispered about the both of you. Malleus pulled away and turned to face the audience

“Listen well all of you. They may be a child of man, but they are your future king/queen. You’d be wise to respect them.” Above the castle, thunder roared across the sky, making some faeries flinch and some bow. Somewhere in the room someone ordered the orchestra to begin playing a slow song. Malleus lifted your chin with his fingers and said,

“Child of man, would you care to dance with me?”

“Of course.” You smiled and let him lead you around the dance floor

“It’s odd Malleus… I could have sworn we’ve done this before.” You said as the both of you slowly danced together in the spotlight, Malleus paused and quirked a brow

“Oh? And when have we done something like this?”

“It was once upon a dream.”

One of the most annoying 'Snape was obsessed with Lily' assumptions is that he only likes potions to impress her, and that everything written in the Prince's book was in fact Lily's own innovation and he was obsessively looking at her brewing them and noted what she did. It's so stupid bc it assumes Snape was an idiot at potions and he was an obsessive incel. Immediate nope-out bc they like to strip him of ANY good traits he has because he cant possibly be intelligent. The only theory worse than that one is the 'James was the real HBP' that one hurts in its idiocy.

YES IT’S SO ANNOYING OMFG.

I’ve noticed that Snape antis constantly say that “Snape apologists only like Snape because of the reveal about him and Lily in the last book” and claim that we ignore what he’s done in the 6 previous books but then they go and make every single fucking thing he’s done about Lily. Even when she has nothing to do with it (Snape bullying Neville, for example).

Snape did this? Because of Lily. Snape said that? Because of Lily. *insert random fact about Snape*? Oh, because of Lily, Snivellus only *insert the most completely-made-up-random-ass—crazily-popular-bullshit-headcanon-ever-that-gets-treated-like-canon* because of Lily. It’s either that or “because *insert random-ass-motivation.*” LIKE CAN Y’ALL STOP WITH THAT?

His personality does NOT revolve around Lily or James. Stop trying to twist motivations and strip characters (ayo) of their canonical talents and abilities in order to glorify another. I’m certain Marauder stans would get angry if people started saying that “James only liked and played Quidditch just to impress Lily” and that he had no legitimate talent (or smth like that), and rightfully so.

But honestly, no matter how much that “James is actually the half-blood Prince” infuriates me, I just love how Marauder stans realise Snape’s creativity and skill and they can’t stand greasy meanie Snivellus being so talented to the point where they transfer his traits to James. Their lack of material is genuinely pitiable. Severus’s skill is canon, where did they even get the idea that he did it for Lily? Did they not hear Slughorn’s words in HBP?

Plus, there are two more problems with the situation:

James was most likely at best mediocre at Potions, if he was at least good—good, not extraordinarily talented—he 100% would’ve gotten invited to the Slug club; he was a wealthy, popular, pureblood Quidditch star. That would’ve been enough for Slughorn to invite him. If James was at least good at Potions, Slughorn would’ve invited him, but he didn’t. And Slughorn only ever brought Lily up when talking about Harry’s talent in Potions, never mentioned James.

They’re basically admitting that they’re alright with horrible things being done if it’s their faves doing it. The whole “James is the half blood Prince” theory is just stupid, but if he was the one who wrote all the notes into the book then he was the one who created Sectumsempra, Levicorpus and all the other spells. They eat Snape alive for creating Sectumsempra and Levicorpus but it’s totally fine and even cool for James to have done it. I’ve even seen some make excuses and say “Oh well James probably did it for a good reason” 1. Oh yeah? like he did with Levicorpus… aka the spell he used to sexually assault another teenager? 2. then why doesn’t that same logic apply to Snape? Why is it only your fave, and not my fave who *gasps* isn’t a sex offender?🫢 One of Marauder stans’ most common arguments to defend James’s actions in SWM is “well Snape created the spell (Levicorpus)!” (as if that justifies SA but that’s not the point), so if they’re saying James created the spell then….. 😗

They always find the weirdest ways to play themselves it’s actually so hilarious.

your endverse cas post… your courage. when i got on spn tumblr and endverse cas was everyone’s favorite scruffy guy i was like Shocked cuz i haven’t read DTA and i Only knew him as sexually exploitative guru cas. i was like hello

so i actually don't think this can be laid at seperis' door. it was just the same in 2013. if anything, dta is actually better about this than most endverse cas fics because dta cas manages to at least be very weird. like he's not fanon endverse cas, and he's also actually deviated so far from the canon that i would say it's reasonable to think of him as more... inspired by endverse cas (and canon cas as well) than actually slotting into the end as an episode. none of this is a knock against dta by the way. i have some problems with the fic but i am NOT immune to dta cas, i think he's wonderful and a pretty fresh take on a stale topic. actually, the singular fic that has the most interestingly unpleasant endverse cas i have ever read is also extremely reimagined, and this works to its benefit. you will find no criticism of explicit reimaginings here. i think mainstream fanon is much worse about flattening and woobifying endverse cas than dta, which just changes him in interesting ways. like, most endverse cas fics, long before dta existed... ok i think there are several factors that contribute to his woobification.

the first and most important is... well, fans frequently shave the rough edges off their male faves in terms of misogyny. this happens to like, every man. certainly dean, sam, and cas all get this treatment, but so do like. most male characters in most fandoms. this is partly because for majority-women transformative fans, casual sexism makes lots of (even most) male characters difficult to like on a visceral level, and it's easier to just ignore it than find someone else to attach to. it's also partly because the victims of that casual sexism are usually totally dehumanized by the narrative. like, they exists as props for an episode, or a scene, or a single joke, and the show tells us not to care about them. like, in free to be you and me, in the episode, cas looking deeply into chastity's eyes and saying that thing about her father is meant to be funny. the punchline of the joke is that cas is dumb and doesn't know how to act around women. we are not encouraged to empathize with chastity: the music stings make this scene comic and silly, the reaction shots are all of dean being flabbergasted by cas' ridiculousness, we see the consequences which are experienced by dean and cas, we have no idea what happens to chastity. the whole thing is tied up with an adorable bonding moment in the alley behind the brothel. it's all played as harmless silliness, and, crucially, we are only supposed to pay attention to our protagonists. chastity is a prop, we never even learn her real name. nothing about the shape of the narrative around her invites our empathy. so you could be forgiven for never ever once in a million years considering that if a strange man who none of the employees had ever seen before walked into a brothel and started listing intimate personal details about one of the employees, he is going to appear to be a dangerous stalker. this is of course a misunderstanding, cas is innocent here. but it never gets cleared up. is chastity scared after that? does she triple check her deadbolt every night? does she end up so paranoid that she moves apartments, to a worse place with mold on the walls and a rodent infestation? we don't ask these questions because the narrative tells us not to care, partly because of sexism and partly because supernatural has the worst case of protagonist syndrome i've ever seen. basically we don't see the consequences of our main characters' casual misogyny, so it's easier to ignore.

the second thing is that 5x04 is so explicit in painting endverse dean as Bad and endverse cas as a victim. like it's all about dean's guilt: he sees the state cas is in in the endverse and blames himself, and the narrative conspires to have him blame himself. he sees the cruel, vicious thing he himself becomes in the endverse and hates himself, and the narrative conspires to make him hate himself. this is often taken to extremes in fandom, where endverse dean is painted as directly victimizing endverse cas, when that doesn't seem to actually be the case in the episode, that's just dean's control and self-blame issues talking. he blames himself for cas' unhappiness because it was his obligation to prevent it and allowing it to happen is shirking his duties, not because he literally caused it. but because the narrative frame wants us to see cas as Victimized, we are only encouraged to see how he hurts himself, not other people.

the third thing is that endverse cas really does make a compelling sadboi! like, he is so aggressively queercoded, and he's so sad, and there's this insane implication that dean is cheating on him/has cheated on him, and he has all these hammy, tropey markers of someone whose life is ruined. like he is very compellingly tragic! and people see that and they hone in on the tragedy and they make him a woobie and ignore his less likable aspects. and also he's just begging to be categorized under the drug-addicted sad gay slut trope, unfortunately. and like. because people see him this way, as tragic and darling and pathetic, they tend to not pay attention to the harm he might cause other people.

Some of us have been exhausted for years already.

I was a devoted fan from age 8 (so, over 30 years at this point) and here's the thing. For all pre-Prequels SW's faults (so much racism) (so much antisemitism) (so much bad writing) (so so so much bad writing) (George's homophobic iron fist on the IP preventing anything LGBTQ from even being hinted at anywhere) (SO much racism omg) we could choose to ignore the parts we didn't like. It was scattered across games and books and comics, and you could choose which ones to keep in your personal canon. There was a fandom push to catalog everything and plenty of arguing over accuracy, but George himself had said that nothing that didn't have his direct fingerprints on it was canon, so have fun in your own little sandbox over there.

Until the Prequels came out, George tried to make watching the Tartakovsky cartoon a requirement for understanding the start of Revenge of the Sith, and the publisher for the written media changed and started a push to unify content. I left the fandom when the Yuuzhan Vong brought all the baby fash Empire apologists out of the woodwork saying "Palpatine did nothing wrong" and then it had to be incorporated into EVERYTHING. It was a decade of content hell designed to back up one really, really bad take.

I liked SWTOR for a while, it gave me my Star Wars fix but connected to all the old comics I really liked rather than any of the newer canon content. It still had a fash Empire apologist problem, but they could be ignored and blocked.

Rogue One gave me hope that things were turning around. And then the Sequels gave us Prequels Era 2: Only Worse, because now everything was interconnected and inescapable and it was headed by people whose work was guided less by love of the world and more by the urge to see who could piss their name the biggest across the IP. I gave Mando a fair shake, until mid s2 when the creators showed they had no respect for the setting or the fans and then it became clear that it was just Filoni trying to keep his fave OCs relevant.

I'm tired. I'm tired of Star Wars being the new MCU. I'm tired of this vast fantasy world full of boundless potential being shrunk to a village by people who feel that fans won't stick with it without familar characters (do not talk to me about the High Republic books either). I'm tired of everything having to be cross-referential and creators fighting by forcibly reconning each other's work.

Was old Star Wars better? Not really, but you could avoid stepping in the occasional piles of shit. Too much now feels like a consistent layer of dung coating the floor; no matter where you step, the stench clings.

Fandoms like to view themselves as "progressive" because of the amount of romantic pairings they have. Romantic pairings which, if I'm being honest, only really boil down to relationships between men (most of whom are white). As nuanced as most claim to be, when it comes down to it, they can still be just as bad —if not worse— as the mainstream media they always seem to criticize and look down upon. By sidelining, erasing, and demonizing members from marginalized groups, you're unknowingly engaging in the same exact things that the majority of mainstream media does.

If your excuse for not caring about female characters and characters of color is always "this character wasn't written well originally/I just think they're boring", while at the same time you're putting in hours upon hours of work into analyzing and explaining the flaws in your white male faves and/or taking your time to further develop them in your fanworks by giving them the layers and depth that the canon material didn't, then you're part of the problem. Simple as that. I'm highly aware that a lot of women and POC aren't as well thought out and developed as the white male characters, but fandoms will really go to extreme lengths to flesh out their white faves while not extending the same courtesy to the rest.

Fandom racism and misogyny are very prevalent issues within every single fandom and it's very important to learn how to recognize our own subconscious biases in order to figure out how we can work towards avoiding them in the future. Unlearning our personal biases takes a lot of time and effort, of course, but it ultimately helps us better ourselves. 

These issues don't just manifest from hating or ignoring female characters and characters of color for no reason, it can also manifest in micro-aggressive behavior, the double-standard where we're willing to forgive white male characters quicker than the rest (ESPECIALLY women of color since a lot of you really seem to hate them for absolutely no reason whatsoever), or even the need to always keep characters of color in a strictly platonic space with their white counterparts and citing it as "preference". And that's actually a really good way to check your own fandom racism and misogyny. It isn't just how you react when those characters are portrayed as flawless, it's also how you react when those characters actually HAVE flaws. 

You can critique the creators who fall short on this front while still trying your best to separate their failures from the actual characters themselves. Try to read complexity into them, dive deeper and give them the same consideration you give the white men. There's always something that can be done. Don't insist on more positive representation of people of color in media if you're only going to end up ignoring/dismissing them in favor of the white characters once you get it. Respecting characters who belong to marginalized groups isn't just on the shoulders of the creators of whatever type of media you're consuming, it's also on the fans.

     “When are they coming out?!” You could hear a girl roar from the crowd before you. It was your first day at Hope’s Peak Academy, and already you could tell that at least some of the crazy rumors about the school’s eccentricities were true. You’d only been walking around campus, getting your bearings before you moved into the Main Course dorms later that evening.

     It was a bit odd to see a group of nearly a dozen girls from the Reserve Course waiting at the entrance to the Main Course building, waiting to watch some of the Ultimates walk to the cafeteria. I mean, being an Ultimate didn’t make one worth fan-girling over, right? But maybe you’d have seen their side of it if you weren’t an Ultimate yourself.

     Jin Kirigiri, the school’s headmaster, was a very close childhood friend of your father’s, as was the school’s recruiter, Koichi Kizakura. It was only natural that they both insisted you go there, especially with your talent. You were the Ultimate Hunter... or... that’s what your official transcripts said anyway. Your real talent was a little more… complicated to explain to a normal society.

     Your real and extended title was that of the Ultimate Monster Hunter, just like your father before you decades ago. That was your passion, your focus, but since you were also prodigious in the normal hunting of animals, that was the title Headmaster Kirigiri assigned you. Of course, Kizakura and Kirigiri knew of your family’s hunter lineage and the existence of supernatural beings, most of the higher-ups at Hopes Peak did, what with all the connections and respect the academy had garnered.

     Most governments, large corporations and upper-class citizens were privy to the existence of monsters, and those sworn to protect all humans from them, so of course Kirigiri knew of such things, however, he couldn’t exactly have you honing your skills in his classrooms and training yards. The general public would either think he’d gone mad for allowing such activities - training to kill beings that did not exist - or worse, they’d wise up and take notice, revealing the secret of supernatural creatures to the world.

     No, no, that couldn’t be allowed to happen, and so Kizakura and Kirigiri had you practicing your crossbow aim on animal-shaped dummies, had you doing general agility and reflex training. Your firearms were used in a high-tech shooting arena that doubled as a dojo when martial arts students arrived for their allotted lesson time.

     Honestly, you didn’t even want to attend Hope’s Peak, seeing as Headmaster Kirigiri had made it very clear that you couldn’t use any of your true talent anywhere on campus or even while in uniform off-campus. You also had to hide your face with a helmet or mask of some type while hunting from now on. You couldn’t be associated with or traced back to the academy in any way, should someone see you engaged with a monster and spread word of it before being apprehended by law enforcement. This rule was only made more severe by the fact that some of your fellow students were of the very species you made a living annihilating.

     That’s right, Hope’s Peak itself was host to the very rare vampire, werewolf, demon, shapeshifter or other manner of beast. Not all of them chose to be hostile or stuck out like a sore thumb, and hey, if you had the talent, you had the talent. It made you question why you should even give the academy a second thought. It felt like they were mocking you, letting inhuman creatures attend a school they personally invited you to, but your father all but forced you to enroll. He insisted it would be the best for your future, and that there’s no one he trusted more than Kirigiri and Kizakura.

     “But if anything… anything at all happens to (Y/N), Jin, I swear on our friendship, I will handle it myself,” he’d said. Your father’s words rung through your mind like a constant reminder. He meant it, too. Your father was the hunter of all hunters, a king of sorts in his circle. Kirigiri knew very well that letting him down was not an option.

     You stood on the very edge of the group, as far from the doors as possible but still near enough to the others that you wouldn’t look like some weird loner. You sighed, chuckling under your breath at their chittering. It was all so silly.

     “Here they come!” You were startled out of your trance when one out of the whole gaggle of girls before you squealed loudly. You walked toward the front of their group, fascinated by how excited they all were. You were merely curious to see what all the fuss was about. How could they possibly be this worked up about other students their age, just walking to lunch after class? Then again, you hadn’t met any of your fellow Ultimates. Was there some kind of beauty requirement to become one? Huh, wouldn’t surprise me, you thought rather cynically to yourself. This place loves to flaunt its students and reputation.

     “Look~ it’s Fuyuhiko!” One of the girls pushed roughly past you, grazing your shoulder. You could practically see hearts in her eyes as she passed.

     “Jeez, okay...” you muttered sheepishly and leaned back again. You may be a monster killer, but that only worked out because of the adrenaline rush and the lack of attachment and value placed on your targets. In normal life and social situations, it felt like you were the one being killed.

     Great! Now I can’t see anything! You mentally snapped at the fan-girls bumping and shuffling into you with every sporadic movement they made. You couldn't see anything, but you could certainly hear the girls get louder and louder by the second. You were now completely pushed to the side of the group as the girls grunted and hissed like rabid animals.

     “And that’s the lucky one! Komaeda, I think! Man, he’s so hot…” A random brunette drooled.

     You mechanically recalled little bits and details from your dad’s casework and journals on the most famous vampires in the country. Nagito... yes… you were going to stay away from this one.

     The supernatural beings that could pass as human and were deemed not to be a danger to society signed contracts and treaties that allowed them to live out their lives like normal and protected them legally from hunters (much to your kind’s chagrin). They had strict rules to follow, however, and those who broke said rules were prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and taken off the protection list, making them fair game to hunters. 

     You really didn’t understand why they kept giving the feral savages chances. Erasing the memories of witnesses, victims (if they survived), and their families after each attack or incident was costly and just unfair to mankind.

     The girls continued to shout and vie for the boys’ attention. Fuyuhiko huffed, rolling his eyes in annoyance at the fuss they were making. This only served to rile them up further, however. It seemed the tough, flippant, bad-boy yakuza persona is exactly what they wanted. They loved the way he gave them the cold shoulder.

     Nagito, on the other hand, was a different case entirely. He didn’t just ignore the girls, he made an obvious show of his disgust for them. He was practically snarling, nose scrunched up as he leaned away from the crowd of them. It wasn’t annoyance at their mewling and squawking, it was something far different. Something like pure revulsion mixed with condescension. But why? It didn’t really matter, as the girls clearly didn’t pick up on his cues, shooting rapid-fire questions his way and reaching out for his sleeves. You scoffed. It was so shallow of them to only like him for his looks and title of Ultimate he held. They knew nothing about him. 

     What he could do to them if they got them alone. How him could kill them in an instant, and even possibly enjoy that kill.

     While you were lost in the abhorrence of your thoughts, Nagito’s eyes had honed in on you, noticed that you were wearing the same uniform as him, and promptly glided over in front of you.

     “Why, hello there!” Komaeda stopped right in front of you. You took a startled step back, but he grasped your hand, preventing you from moving any further away. You did everything you could to repress your fear and repugnance, but your hand still shook slightly in his cold, dead one, and you were sure he could tell. He giggled, obviously enamored with your very presence. “I don’t believe I've seen you before, but you must be in the Main Course as well! What’s your name, if I might ask? You don’t have to tell me if you don’t wanna...” Nagito grinned widely, flashing a set of pearly white teeth. The girls swooned beside you. It seemed you were the only one afraid of what those teeth could do. He was deceivingly beautiful on the outside: tall, pale, doe-eyed, and dangerous. His Class B ranking put him just below the most dangerous of vampires, the elite, the royal clans.

     “(Y-Y/N). It’s my first day.” Your voice shook as you jerked your hand away roughly. It was hard to feel confident without your weapons on you, knowing there was nothing you could do to defend yourself here. Damn you, Kirigiri.

      Your father would be enraged if he knew you had just touched a vampire’s hand so casually. Nagito frowned slightly. He could sense it, the way you didn't trust him, the way you didn't like him down deep inside. He knew you knew something you shouldn't, knew more than the other humans attending Hope’s Peak, and he didn't like it. His brow furrowed in a display of frustration, but that quickly melted away, and he smiled kindly, eyes crinkling at the corners. He would figure out what made you special, even among the Ultimates he revered so passionately. Something was off, and it would kill him if he didn’t figure out why.

     “Well, (Y/N)” He leaned down to your height, his face inches from yours, breathing deeply. Almost as soon as he’d inhaled, he snapped back up, his spine stiff and straight. “Oh!” A look of almost painful surprise and confusion crossed his countenance.

     “What?” You panicked, looking him up and down.

     “Oh, uh, nothing… you smell really good, heh. Sorry, I probably shouldn’t have said that. That’s weird, huh? Wow, I’m really the worst...” he chuckled awkwardly, his hand rubbing the back of his neck in a display of innocence. Your mouth hung open, appalled. How could he be so bold about his nature in public? You knew exactly what he was smelling. The hair on your arms and the back of your neck stood up in fear and vexation. Your reaction told him all he needed to know, and in that instant, he decided he wanted to know more. Nagito was the obsessive type, and you were going to be his new fixation. Why did you know? Who told you of his... condition? “Anyway, welcome to Hope’s Peak Academy. I hope I have the honor of seeing you again.” You could hear the wave of extreme jealousy behind you. The heat of anger and envy for you was thick in the air.

     “Enough, Komaeda, ya big creep…” the small but feisty boy cleared his throat before continuing.  “C’mon, if you wanna have time for lunch it’s now or never!” You sighed in relief. Fuyuhiko placed his hand on Nagito's shoulder, pulling him gently away from you. 

     “Sorry, sorry!” Nagito offered a warm smile to his shorter friend. “I’m coming! I apologize, Fuyuhiko” He turned to you,“See you in class, (Y/N)” He simpered, and continued to trail along behind his friend.

     Not if you had anything to say about it…

     You were going to avoid that boy like the plague. Just because you couldn’t kill him, doesn’t mean you had to be best friends.

All characters have flaws. If they don’t it makes them boring characters. I’ve seen FIVE. F I V E people say today that will is the most selfish character of stranger things and deserves to, and I quote, “die next season, #killwillbyers .” No. I’m not kidding.

For starters: Will may have been inconsiderate last season but reminder!! 1. He’s a 14 year old boy 2. Him wanting to play d&d doesn’t make him a bad character it makes him a DIMENSIONAL character. Stop expecting him to be perfect. He’s learning. He’s growing. He doesn’t deserve to die just because he wanted to play D&D. Him calling El stupid was a throwaway line. Mike didn’t even care that Will called El stupid because Mike understood Will didn’t mean it and that he was frustrated, so you shouldn’t either. I admit, calling El stupid wasn’t cool, but neither was El assaulting Max but apparently that’s justified. My point is: EVERY CHARACTER IS FLAWED. Every one. Stop pretending like Will is the worst thing that’s happened to the show and stop pretending like (insert character here) is the most small harmless bean ever:

This is coming from an EL STAN aswell. I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy in this fandom. Because it’s insane. Apparently Will calling El stupid (which I’m not saying wasn’t bad- I’m just saying you can’t seriously hate a character for making a realistic mistake and refusing to acknowledge all of the selfless things Will has done and only pointing out the one thing he’s done that makes him flawed.) but point is, apparently Will calling El stupid makes him the most selfish awful person ever but El assaulting Max and completely not being understanding in some elements of seasons 2 and season 3 and in ways being a brat, it’s fine because “it was a mistake”, which it WAS! El doesn’t deserve to be hated for those things because she’s a dimensional character and I love her. But stop ridiculing others for things you wouldn’t ridicule your fave for.

Every character has messed up. Stop expecting characters to be perfect. I’ve seen people say Will was worse than Billy. Billy, the racist abuser. Exactly.

These characters need to have flaws to be good and entertaining characters. And remember, the party members are KIDS! They’re brains are still developing! They’re children! They’re learning and developing. They aren’t the Pope or Obama. They say and do mean things. Doesnt mean their actions shouldn’t have consequences, it just means that you have to understand that your fave isn’t going to be unproblematic all the time. Deal with it.

Every one of the party members has made a mistake or multiple.

MIKE: made out with el for 6 months straight and ditched his friends. Can be a complete asshole. Ignored the “best thing that’s ever happened to him”, tried to control El, is an ass to Max

LUCAS: was wary of El and insulted her. Can be too blunt and can forget about his surroundings and about others feelings

DUSTIN: kept dart despite knowing it was from the upside down. Can be selfish

WILL: was inconsiderate of Mike’s break up, called El stupid.

EL: assaulted Max, spied on mike despite knowing mike hated it, was very blunt and rude in ways, can be a brat and doesn’t understand some things that are meant to keep her safe

MAX: Can be a total asshole. Very set in her ways. Doesn’t like to understand peoples point of view

THIS DOESNT MAKE THEM BAD CHARACTERS! Instead of paying attention to their bad traits start recognizing all the good things they’ve done. All of their GOOD traits. This fandom can be so pessimistic at times.

Every single member of the party has made mistakes and have done morally incorrect things. But they’ve also done very good things too!!! 97% of the things the party members have done have been GOOD. Stop paying attention to that 3% that isn’t morally correct or selfless or kind. You’ve made mistakes and I’m sure you’d hate being ridiculed for the rest of your life over one thing you did months ago. Or one mistake you made when you were younger and more naive or when you were still growing.

Instead of pointing out the bad things each party member has done and holding them up to impossible expectations because they are CHILDREN, take a minute to appreciate all of the good things they’ve done, which include (but aren’t limited to)

MIKE: Loyal, kind, patient, understanding, puts his friends needs infront of his own, will do anything for the people he loves, trustable

LUCAS: rational, leaves no man behind, defends his friends no matter what, brave, fights for his friends

DUSTIN: Patient, uplifting, funny, always will be there for you and will listen to you. Super smart, can get you out of any scientific or mathematical situation. Unapologetically himself

WILL: loyal, kind, a great listener, the mediator, peaceful, selfless, loves you unconditionally, puts his needs behind everyone else so he won’t worry his mom or the party

EL: selfless, brave, would sacrifice herself for her friends and family. Kind hearted and genuine. Always forgives people for their actions

MAX: will beat someone up if she found out they bullied you. Very uplifting and encourages you to be independent and to love yourself

AND THATS NOT EVEN ALL OF THEM!

Appreciate the good traits your favorite characters have! I’m not saying you aren’t allowed to dislike a character but it’s complete bullshit that you’d create some personal head canon that so and so is an awful person or make up lies about a certain character just to get an excuse to dislike the character.

These kids have trauma. Stop expecting them to deal with their trauma in 100% healthy ways. This is the EIGHTIES. They can’t just go find a support group online or go on Quora to find the answer as to why they’re acting a certain way.

These kids are misunderstood and they really just need a hug. Stop making a certain character out to be something their not.

And for the love of god, El and Will are both great characters and are my 2 favorites so can we stop this war it’s pointless

If you wish death upon ANY of the party members I will personally kick you into orbit. They are 14. who wishes death on 14 year old children?! That is disgusting.

Anyways, have your faves. Enjoy the show. And I’m not telling you NOT to dislike a character but instead of hating on them, level with them. Put yourself in their shoes. Reason with them and ask yourself, “Well maybe I also would act like this if I went through what they went through.”

Character are going to have flaws! Don’t let that stop you from appreciating the parts of their character that are good and lovable.

I’ll say it again: a good character needs to have flaws to he entertaining.

So no: the statement “(character here) has never done anything wrong in their life ever.”

Because they have. And that’s OKAY! Normalize having flawed yet lovable and enjoyable characters. That’s why I love ST so much. The party is REALISTIC. The kids ACT LIKE KIDS. Stop expecting them to be and act like 45 year old men or women. They’re learning. Growing. And developing.

As requested, books / series I read in 2020 in the order I read them, with a few brief thoughts. (This took me a hot second because there are a few and also I moved cities) Should I keep a consistent goodreads? Yes I should but I didn’t think of that at the time, so bone apple teeth & sorry if I offend you abt your faves x

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas - This is one of the most vivid published fantasy books I have ever read... I read it twice in rapid succession. The fandom POPS off. I must say I have issues with certain aspects e.g. fae lore completely ignored à la Twilight, all love interests 500+ years old and technically a different species, etc (I’m not going to deconstruct the entire series here but just know that I could... Nesta deserves better)

Cruel Prince by Holly Black - This fucking slaps, HB clearly has done her research, the lore is near immaculate, and it explores the Fae in such a unique way, tying it to the modern world subtly and seamlessly. My only qualm was that the books felt quite short; truly wish there had been more content.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas (6/7) - So basically I read this in one single, hyperfixated fit which meant I literally locked myself in my room for three days straight and read all six books back to back in a row from morning to the wee hours. Which is not to say it was spectacular; although it was a VERY rich world, sometimes it was too much... this felt like 6 stories in one. Ik she was young when she wrote this but it is my humble opinion that SJM needs a better editor & I personally think Rowan is a grade A asshole / straight up abusive (& personally think the ACOTAR Tamlin plot was born from that?). It’s good but not as good as ACOTAR. Skip-read the last book. 

Grishaverse (Shadow and Bone) by Leigh Bardugo (3) - This is essential to read before SOC but was very much simply a YA fantasy book, although the world was cool and the way the love plot played out was, imo, a subtle middle finger to the fantasy trope. Felt very much aimed at younger readers though? Really liked the sandwhich structure of the Proluge and Epilogue, especially in #2

Six of Crows series by Leigh Bardugo (2) - INCREDIBLE continuation of Grishaverse, better than the original series by a mile. It has the range, the diversity, the representation (the male lead is a disabled asexual and still the most cunning of the entire cast of characters), the plot is phenomenal, and it manages such a well rounded plot in only two books which means nothing is stretched out or squeezed in more than need be. Deserves all the praise it gets.

King of Scars series by Leigh Bardugo (0.5/1) - Personally I don’t consider this book canon, and while it’s nice to see the rest of Nina’s journey & the world again & everyone else, I don't like it. I will, however, be reading book 2 when it comes out, so shame on me, I suppose.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (1/1) - this was incredibly cool although it went off in a completely different direction than I thought it would based off the first few chapters? One of my favourite YA-author-debuts-New-Adult novels in 2020 though!

Crescent City by Sarah J Maas (1/1) - This was supposed to be SJM/s New Adult debut, although personally I would put her other series in New Adult, and I can’t say a remarkable amount was different with this except they said “fuck” and “ass” a lot. WHY is the romantic interest 500 years old AGAIN. I just... don’t... I just don’t think it was necessary... the world was cool though, and the last half of the book was riveting, but the beginning was quite slow and I thought the sword thing was predictable. I am interested to see where this goes though.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (3) - This world is so fucking cool... four Londons aka parallel universes & the one in ‘our’ world is set in industrial era London. Magic, girls dressing up as boys, thieves, pirates, royalty... it all just slaps. Schwab is an incredible writer & I was completely immersed.

Midnight Sun by SMeyer - I didn’t think anything could possibly detract even further from the Twilight story but I was sorely mistaken... seeing the stalking from Edward’s POV - and it was worse than depicted in Twilight, for the record - completely obliterated any sort of romance the first half of the original book may have portrayed. I still hold the opinion that the entire series would have been better if some kind of vampire lore had been abided by, if only to see all of the villains thwarted by someone dropping a bag of rice on the ground, forcing them to have to count them all.

An ember in the Ash by Sabaa Tahir  (3/4) - This was just a very stereotypical ya fantasy series, emphasis on the YOUNG... it wasn’t anything to write home about but I remember quite enjoying it at the time. 

The Power by Naomi Alderman - This book is FUCKING incredible and EXCEPTIONALLY thought provoking... essentially women alone develop a power of electric shock etc. and then take over the world from men, and it explores feminism and the balance between equality & tipping the scales in the other direction. Written by a friend of M.Atwood in a similar tone to handmaids tale, I would say? Content warning; there are some exceptionally graphic scenes in the latter half of the novel. 

Hamlet by Wllm Shksp - I can’t believe it took me this long to finally read it but Ophelia is my favourite name in the entire world & we love to see a woman go batshit (although she didn’t deserve that). 

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas - this was unsettling in the best sense of the word... it was a little slow & honestly more of a concept than a big reveal, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it after I finished it? A Secret History vibes but make it blurry like the memory of all those dystopian novels you read when you were young?

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab - This is without a doubt my book of the year, and probably the best book I read in 2020? I stayed up all night on a friend’s couch reading it, got a book hangover and reread the ending, and then thrust it upon my mother who doesn’t usually read but read this, and loved it just as much. HIGHLY recommend and you HAVE to read it, it’s beautiful and endearing and just plain wonderful.

Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat (3/3) - I went into this knowing it was going to be terrible, because I had received a blow by blow telling me as much; although I must say that it did learn a remarkable amount of new words, the books did get better as the series went on, and it did have a rather charming ending? BIG content warning for almost everything.

Sapiens by Yuval Harari - mind-expanding & must recommend for everyone, there is everything in this and I daresay everyone should posses this kind of knowledge? I listened to it as an audiobook (which I recommend because it’s rather hearty) but will be buying this in hardcopy & rereading it with annotations. 

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful novels I have ever read, and certainly the most beautiful portrayal of the story of Achilles and the battle of Troy I have ever seen. Patroclus deserved the justice that was given to him in this book; indeed, all of the characters were written with justice and grace. Highly recommend.

Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan (3/5) - Apollo is my favourite Greek God, and the sexiest greek god, and Rick Riordan’s writing slaps, as always. It did pain me to see Apollo, the sexy immortal, have to be forced back into a 16 year old’s body but everything else? Whimsical & wonderful, as expected. 

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong - a retelling of Romeo and Juliette, except it’s set in Shanghai in the 1920′s, and the protagonists already have a history. Very well done, characters are incredibly diverse in race, sexual orientation, gender, and ability / disability (and honestly, representation has never appeared so effortless and elegant). Also it includes a monster and possible magic. Incredibly underrated and highly recommend.

The Once and Future Witches by Alix. E Harrow - this was such a unique concept, and truly captivating, the story was charming, and felt like the kind of beautiful fairytale you would read as children but with more grit? ABSOLUTELY recommend this one

The Pisces by Melissa Broder - I hated this so much, not my vibe at all. Mermaid smut x therapy but make it cynical and judgemental (I know there was a moral in there but that’s not my point) also the dog dies.

Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith (1/2) - really interesting & unique concept (all unwritten novels / ideas reside in a special library that is part of Hell and then sometimes the books can come to life) however, my first thought upon reading this was “this reads as if it’s stemmed from one of those writing prompt tumblr posts” bc of the tone and whatever and as it turns out I was somewhat correct, it did stem from a short story (not bad just obvious). It did kind of settle down as it went on but I found reading it kind of a drag, and I don’t think I will read the second one.

Abandon by Meg Cabot - 1. Meg Cabot’s writing always fucking slaps 2. Hades and Persephone but make it modern & very 2000′s & somehow kind of unique 3. I literally loved this, sue me

Medusa Girls (Sweet Venom) by Tera Childs - Like Percy Jackson except they are descendants of Medusa so they are Gorgons and have fangs & venom (hence the title). Gave me very 2000′s vibes? Quite cool but tbh I found the books quite short (like two hours each, if that)? Do NOT read the GoodReads description of the book before you read it, you will spoil it for yourself.

Bring me their Hearts by Sara Wolf - In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated YA series I read in 2020. The heroine is endearing, self aware, witty, and loves to look pretty even while kicking ass which in my opinion is an incredibly underrated trait. Also, immortality without being hundreds of years old? VERY sexy. HIGHLY recommend. 

A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova - High commendation to be given for the fact that it is a standalone and yet manages to fit in the plot of what would usually be a full fantasy trilogy without cutting corners or being a million miles long? Also sweet storyline & beautiful ending? If you liked ACOTAR you should read this as a “what would have / could have been had SJM had a different editor” (No shade I promise).

The Iron Fae by Julie Kagawa (4/4 + novellas) - Incredibly detailed faerie set around the modern world & our current use of technology & iron in it. Very neat adventure-style series, by the time I read the last novella I was well and truly done with the world (aka provided enough content to be fulfilling). Was definitely aimed at a younger audience though, NO smut / smut was brushed over.

The Modern Faerie Tales by Holly Black (3/3 SS) - This is technically the prequel to Cruel prince, set in the modern world, but with the fae world inside it as it traditional? All I have to say is that it is excellent & I highly recommend it.

Bridgerton series (The Duke and I) by Julia Quinn (9/9) - I read this after watching the Netflix show twice through and I am obsessed, although the books were not quite as elegant as the show, and some parts that made me cringe either by their portrayal (it is very firmly set in the 19th century and thus some things are not handled with tact or grace), the characters were exceptionally loveable and I am so excited to see where the show takes them! Lovely language & an abundance of words I had never seen before (always a plus).

Something that bothers me when it comes to reclaiming characters as lgbtq+ is: reclaiming implies that there was something negative that we turned into a positive. Reclaiming is not the same as headcanoning. And most of the times, this negative thing is something about a well-liked character that makes fans uncomfortable and that they don't want to face or admit. In Kaito's case it's his strict views about gender, that makes him say/make sexist, homophobic or transphobic things. Ppl being uncomfortable with aspects of a character and solving them by making the character lgbtq+. He's closeted so we won't talk about his views I guess. I want lgbtq+ characters to be gay because you think they're gay, not because you're reclaiming them from some shit you dislike... It's offensive imo. Instead: I want to see ppl addressing flaws, say "I think Kaito likes men and yeah, he has terrible views about gender". Even if it might not make sense, at least they're acknowledging it?Not: "he has terrible views about gender SO now he's bi/gay". The majority of Kaito/training trio enthusiasts, oum/ota or sai/mota or momo/haru shippers don't ever talk about his views on gender, about "women shouldn't hold weapons" or "save that stuff for the girls" (said with Kaito's disgusted sprite smh...) because they don't wanna face it.

I've always thought of reclaiming as taking something back, as per the definition, like trying to take the power from something by owning it like a "yeah, so maybe I am [insert thing that's being made fun of], what of it?" type thing, because that's how I've always seen it used.

That being the case, the idea of reclaiming a trans/homophobic character doesn't make sense in that it does neither of those things. It also doesn't change the fact that they're trans/homophobic in canon, so I don't see any tangible benefit in doing so other than what you mentioned, which is either:

Trying to ignore their trans/homophobia because the person likes the character but doesn't want to face the fact that their fave is problematic or–

They like a ship involving that character and want to pretend that character isn't trans/homophobic for the sake of their ship, despite canon.

Either way, it seems like they just want to block out the things they don't like about the character, which doesn't solve the problem. More than that, if it was enough to make you want to ignore it then why is it not worth not liking the character over? I understand not liking it when your fave fucks up, I really do, but sometimes they cross a line and when they do you gotta accept it and move on.

Not that I like him, but for example I wouldn't try to 'reclaim' Haiji and make him not a pedo because who the fuck would even do that, so why is it any better for someone to 'reclaim' a transphobe or a homophobe, and not only that but ship them with the exact kind of person they would victimize no less?

The line has been crossed at that point.

In Kaito's case it's not even just that he has problems with gender roles, but that he has traditional values. Kaito's toxic masculinity, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia all stem from that, and it's not just a minor part of his character either (although don't think minor parts should be ignored depending on severity, like in Haiji's case,) it colors a lot of his actions in game!

From being what causes him to punch both Shuichi and Kokichi, to what causes him to keep his life-threatening illness hidden from his friends, to what motivates him to try to help both Maki and Shuichi, to what he yells at and condemns Ryoma, Gonta, Korekiyo, Shuichi, and Kokichi for several times during the game... It's not something negligible, like what his favorite drink is or how long it takes him to do his hair in the morning, his values (for better or worse) are the main thing that drives his character throughout the story. They're a huge part of his character and if you don't like that and you have to go out of your way to hide from it then you might want to reconsider if you actually like Kaito himself or if you just like your idea of him.

If you're actively hiding from canon Kaito then it might be time for you to accept that Kaito's trans/homophobia ruined him for you just like how the incest plot ruined Korekiyo for people or how the pedophilic comment ruined Haiji for people.

My favorite thing about this place is how white people, jalice stans, and weak people in general can never seem to let your maria/jasria blog exist in peace. They always gotta have something to say to you and it’s always the same types of people, sometimes they’re all 3 types combined. You don’t do anything but love maria, give her the character development she so desperately needs, and explore the only canon relationship that we see her have (jasper) while also theorizing about other possible relationships she could have that would be interesting. Because you treat her like a real, fully fleshed character and not an object or a plot device. You do exactly what everyone else here does but because you do it for the “wrong” character(s) it’s a problem? I know you say this for maria a lot but the same applies to you:

Like I get it. I have an unpopular fave and I’m interested in an unpopular ship. There’s not a ton about them that was explored and the little that there is always gets overlooked and simplified down to “it’s just problematic and toxic!” Because that’s what we’re told even though I’ve pointed out many inconsistencies over time because I’ve read every little thing and saw past the surface. Because I care. Because I’m interested.

But what I don’t get is why what I do bothers people who seemingly don’t care?? Like how does me doing what I do impact you at all? If you don’t care and don’t like it why are you here? Why are you bothering me? There are things that I don’t like and I don’t go bothering the people that talk about those things? It’s really just kindergarten at this point. Like I literally don’t bother anybody. I stay in my lane and I create content for what I like and what I take interest in even if nobody else gives a fuck about it. I’m trying to be that change that I wanted to see. Why is my blog so offensive to some people? Because I promise you the unpopular character(s) I take interest in aren’t that much worse than the popular character(s) that the majority cares about.

Like, just leave me alone if you don’t like me and don’t care about anything I post? I know I'm pretty late with this but I just want to thank you for all the no-bullshit answers over Siena stans. At first I was actually pretty sympathetic towards them and could understand people being weird about her because she's fucking Anthony, but the blatant tone-deaf comparisons between her and ANY of the black characters, only being interested in Simon as a character when Siena should fuck him because Anthony "needs to suffer ;)" or when he refers to his affair with her OR acting like shipping the only two black characters that are male and female on the show is somehow them being better than any of the other fans while deliberately ignoring Kate being a dark-skinned Indian woman now and the context that could likely come with that, not to mention the insane notion that somehow, a white woman like Siena suffers JUST AS MUCH AND EVEN MORE as these black characters who we see suffer 10 times more on this show just broke the camel's back to me. Like complaining about ~classism and comparing it to racist writing while erasing a woc and placing Siena as some would-be daughter of her parents (which in this context would literally be them wanting Indian immigrants to care for a British white woman in the 19th century....) is not y'all being Aware, it's being blatantly tone-deaf and racist. No amount of "you guys just hate sex workers :,(" is gonna erase this. I hate how they think they're being So Smart with calling out the classism issues in the show while conveniently buying into the bullshit "~racism doesn't exist anymore sweeties~" argument that the narrative TRIED to sell to us while at the same time having some obvious issues with the characters of color and how they're focused on and even framed against the white ones. And even now, thinking that them obsessing over this white female character and considering it them being Different and Better than the rest of the fans? Nah y'all are just being terrible at this point. It's only gonna get worse once season 2 comes out and they'll only enforce the whole "~racism doesn't exist sweeties~" excuse in order to be blatantly racist in any of the Kate hate and comparisons they'll likely make in order to tear her down as a love interest and wife to Anthony in order to prop their white fave up. No matter how much they wanna pretend otherwise, Siena's role as a sex worker doesn't erase the fact that she's a conveniently attractive white thin woman that fans will sooner flock to ship with Anthony than with Kate now, given the casting.

One final complaint, but I also find it ironic how they wanna pretend that Kate is apparently gonna be some carbon-copy of Siena just because her character description and moments with Anthony will include her 'calling him out on his bs'. As if the book where she is a legitimate character didn't exist a full DECADE before Siena was created. Literally all the specific traits for their fave can be traced back to Kate and how they were sooner inspired BY Kate as a character in creating Siena than the other way around. Like calling Anthony out on his shit? Anthony having a thing for her hair? Those are canon stuff in the book where Kate is introduced. Their fave is neither original nor going to be the Staple for Kate, but they'll never admit this.

I agree with all of this.  To be honest, a lot of the obsession with Siena seems rooted in deep-seated racism and a preference for the precious white woman.  They are using the show to back this up, as you said, because the show handled race horribly.  But because the show handled race horribly and has widely been criticized by people of color on that front, it just reinforces my perception of the most intense stans as like.... deeply racist.  Coupled, of course, with the idea that Kate’s family would LOOOOOVEEEEEEE PORCELAIN SKINNED SIENA!!!!  WHOSE SKIN WE LOVE!!!!!  MILKY WHITE BABES!!!!  

These people of color, from Kate’s family (who by the way, most of these stans get wrong because they haven’t read the source material--I see a lot of references to Kate’s alive parents which uhhhhhhh not only are they both dead but they’re both dead in a PLOT IMPORTANT WAY lmao) to Simon to Kate herself are only used to prop up Siena.  Simon is used to make Anthony jealous, because to many white women watching this show, some supposed Simon/Daphne stans included, Simon does not exist as anything other than a sex object because he’s a hot black man.  Simon is literally reduced to a virtual sex toy or figure of animalistic sexual desire by so many people who watch this show, it’s INSANELY gross.  Called out for racism?  But we ship Simon and Marina together, so we can’t beeee!!!

I do disagree with you a bit on Siena’s personality, largely because I didn’t.... see much of one.  I don’t think the writers intentionally took anything from Kate there, I think they just were like “ah yes, a low-class sex worker, she’s gonna say ‘ell guvna fancy a fuck luv” but also argue with him because we can’t think of anything else for her to do or any other way to mine humor out of her.  

I also see a lot of conflation of racism and classism by these people, and... no.  Regardless of your class, if you are a person of color in the western world, you have probably experienced racism.  I mean, fuck, we just saw an entire expose about how you can enter the royal family in England and experience intense racism.  Regardless of whether or not Siena is lower class, she will never experience the type of adversity that people experience with racism.  There’s this desperate attempt to pretend that what Siena experiences is the same as racism, which is clearly an attempt to make an excuse to dog Kate.

But ultimately tbh none of this matters in terms of what will be ON THE SHOW (editing to clarify: of course it matters in terms of what it reflects re: racism and how harmful it is to people of color who have to see it).  Season 2 is going to happen.  I’ll hedge my bets now that it’ll be wildly popular.  Kate will be loved by the vast majority of people watching.  These people will have even less content than they do now and they’ll show their asses even more and get dog piled on or fade away.  Kate and Anthony are about as canon as it gets.  Anthony canonically says that she’s the best he’s ever had lmao, she is the love of his life, he marries her and she pops out several babies for him.  So I’m just getting ready to drink my Kate Sharma Stan Juice when that season releases, because racists are gonna be racist especially when they have a white woman to worship.  But I know what I know.

Rival pirate lovers....I always thought the Dwarnian soap opera was more Downton Abby than Tanglin but apparently it's Black Sails (I still haven't seen Black Sails don't @ me).  Contemplating the notion of Sana, Violet and Park being the odd three that don't get the appeal of the show.

Krejjh jumped to the money option really quickly, and didn't even anchor it particularly strategically - it probably was the best option, but it's fun to consider how different subsets of the crew might've handled the lone agent sitch

Tangentially related, there is an entire graph in my head with what names everyone does and doesn't call each other, because this shows plays so much with that and I love it

Sana saying "first fight is the hardest" to Arkady like she isn't about to demonstrate an entire episode's worth of being a hot mess in this regard. Captain, ILU, but you and Arkady are equally ridiculous about these things, neither of you will ever have the upper hand.

Arkady considering those years that Violet views with concern as really great years of her life and it being hard to partition out the bad stuff makes so much sense. I was looking at a career advice thing the other day (I know, kinda leftfield, stay with me here), and once you're at a baseline level of security, the things that tend to really motivate people are autonomy, mastery and purpose. It's...not hard to see how fighting in a united human military force against the Dwarnians would beat what came before for Arkady, in all of those aspects.

My brain is desperately trying to resolve the contradiction between "four years apart", "Juniper is 22", "Violet graduated Harmony at a normal age in ‘85" and "this show occurs in 2191", and is landing on ignoring the first statement as the least disruptive choice

By the end of this show Violet will have fake-dated everyone on this ship in front of an IGR officer or two. (Am slightly surprised neither Violet or Park prepped a "siblings or spouses" answer, but it's been a long day and that's a really common last name)

Violet has a...kind of comprehensiveness to her where I 100% bought her going well Arkady isn't talking to me about shit in her life, guess I'm not talking to her about shit in my life. Like, she can go either way but it's gonna be even across the board.

Minor Character MVP: Soup Man! What a dude, it’s nice to hang with someone who’s a little more rooted than our gang and seeing how it plays with an unbounded Sana. They resolved that so neatly that it makes me curious to know how they even fell apart in the first place tbh. And while I’ve never needed canon validation, I appreciate that the conclusion leaves space to play with my fave Sana ships when I do feel like being canon-compliant

The tendency in fandom to take every white girl with short hair, regardless of the status of their canonical interest or lack of interest in women and explicit interest and/or sexual history with everything but, proclaim them a lesbian queen, and then ignore or absolve them of every single horrific act they take in fiction because of this. Women aren’t inherantly less vile than men (or anyone non-binary, agender, fluid, etc, else), and whatever bad deeds they do should be judged based on just that—on the deeds, and their context. Not their sexuality, imagined sexuality, or their gender. Becuase none of those things effect whether committing murder is bad. At all. Not even a little. And none of them. Is even a personality trait. Affecting the character’s value as a person.

It’s cool, and good, to see characters with minority identities. And it’s real nice. When it’s whatever you are. But them being whatever. Is not a personality trait. Just a fact. And sometimes. People of any type. Are not good. Pretending any minority status—gender, sexuality, race, disability, neurotype, etc—is a get out of jail free card? Is not. Doing them. Or anyone. Any favors. Personality disorder. Doesn’t make you bad. Also doesn’t make you good. Your actions do. Acting like Amy from Gone Girl did nothing wrong when she date rapes her boyfriend & then frames him for doing that to her & ruins his life, then blackmails her husband who is terrified of being murdered by her into staying with her for the sake of the child she made at a fertility clinic with his sperm without his consent, bc she’s a woman. Isn’t good. Men aren’t more deserving of violence than women. Neither is anyone else. Jane. Left an infant child in an unheated car in subzero weather in a snow storm with zombies around that easily would hear it cry and go eat it. So she could lie and say she already let zombies eat it to bait a man with easily triggerable PTSD who had just lost his family to zombies for the second time into starting a fight. Because he was injured, unarmed, weak, down an eye, and 50, while she was fit, mid 20s, healthy, and armed with a hunting knife. Because she wanted an excuse to kill him without looking bad, because she wanted the 11 year old girl she was co-parenting with him, all to herself. And her immediately responding to the dude throwing a punch by stabbing him in the stomach to escalate the fight from brawl to life or death, then losing her knife, and instead of telling him the baby was alive & she’d made it up to start a fight which could have at any point ended the fight, begging the 11 year old child to gun down her oldest surviving friend with her own hands in cold blood so that she’d get what she wanted? Is evil. As is crying on the 11 year old and using pity as a weapon to get her to stay with her if she gets mad and wants to leave when she realizes Jane staged the whole thing for an excuse to murder, and so is after realizing like a month later that she is pregnant, committing suicide, and leaving the 11 year old that she just manipulated into killing her oldest surviving friend/completely isolated on purpose so she could have her to herself, totally alone in the apocalypse to care for an infant. Jennifer’s Body? Is a fantastic film. And Jennifer didn’t deserve any of what happened to her. But not one single boy she kills during the course of that film deserved it—and explicitly so. Even the guy who could easily have been a meathead jock bully is outside alone crying becuase his best friend just died and he loved him before she decides to lure him off and eat him alive. And acting like it’s totally fine & Needy should have just let her keep eating boys instead of killing her? Is fucked up. None of them deserved to die. And no one deserves death innately more because they are or are not something that is just a factual designator of their makeup as a human. The exchange student was scared and alone and nice, the catholic kid was sweet and Needy’s friend, Chip is a bad boyfriend but he meant well and being stupid doesn’t mean you deserve to die. And this girl ate them alive. That’s not funny. Or cool. Or fine becuase they were dudes. Gertrude Robinson? Chose again and again to betray people who loved her, or trusted her—sold out victims of awful trauma to their worst nightmares. Killed friends in the worst possible ways, like it was nothing. Michael loved her, and trusted her, and tried to care for her, and she without faltering fed him to his worst nightmare and forced him to become it. There is nothing excusable about that action.

Jude Perry? Has 0 redeeming features. Didn’t even stay faithful to her poor gf & was creepy obsessed w Agnes. Literally murdered her co-worker friend just because he was happy, and she wanted to destroy things: that’s it. She didn’t even dislike him. Murdered him because he had a wife and kid and house and it seemed fun, then burned down his house, took his wife’s money, and now checks in on his kid every so often in case he ever recovers from the trauma she inflicted enough to be fun to kill. There is literally nothing good about this woman. Yes. I mean that. Because being a lesbian? Is just a thing. There is no g/b tag, there is no tag at all. Amanda Young? Got kidnapped and tortured and forced to choose between killing a man who couldn’t resist but was conscious to watch her, and letting herself die, and she killed him. Then, instead of responding to that trauma with guilt or responsibility or anger at her captor, joined up with him and started helping him kidnap people just like her. She was not forced, she was not lied to. It does not matter if John was manipulative; she is a grown ass woman and like all grown ass adults, responsible for her own actions and choices. She did not get manipulated pitifully into this—she did not go unwillingly. She volunteered, with a happy vengeance, became obsessed with John and in love with him, despite his complete lack of interest. And she did not even just do what he did. She decided on her own that no one deserved redemption, & she killed them for fun in traps that wouldn’t let them go even if they did whatever awful thing the trap demanded as a price for life, just for the fun and power trip of watching them die helpless & in agony. That was all her, & her alone. She sat in a house full of people slowly dying from organ decomposition over the course of a few hours, for no crime worse than drug addiction—the thing she of all people should have been most sympathetic to—knowing full well at any time she could have saved them and stopped the game, and did nothing. She held a woman in her arms and stroked her head lovingly while she let her die in one of the most inhumane ways possible for the crime of having not been able to break an addition. She got saved by a 16 year old child multiple times, who had done nothing more than shoplift, and stood by while he had to watch a man get his brains blown out, another burn to death in an oven. As his organs slowly dissolved too. Watched the kid kill another human being & massively traumatize himself to save her life. And responded to that by attacking & knocking him out, tying him up, locking him up for days in a tiny safe bound and gagged with an oxygen supply to keep him alive, to be a piece in another game. Left his father, who had shown up to try & save him, to starve to death in chains in a horrible abandoned rotting room, & never even told him his son was alive. Let every other addict die horribly, let that kid sustain permanent damage to his organs that will kill him young, antidote taken or not, took his dad from him, & went back to torturing without a second thought. Kidnapped a woman whose worst crime was being a doctor & dating someone while maybe separated instead of divorced from her husband, put her in a trap that would take her head off with shotgun blasts, threatened her for fun, & then killed her even after she did everything she was asked, because it was more important to her that the old man she was obsessed with think she was special and great, than for the other woman to get to stay alive another day & go home to her daughter. There is nothing sympathetic about Amanda. She’s just not only evil, but too spineless to take responsibility for her own choices & actions, & tries to hide behind a “UwU I am sad & lonely & damaged & having trauma means I can literally torture people to death to feel special & it’s really tragic and sympathetic about me, not evil. Uhm. Some people??? Commit torture-murders?? To cope??” And acting like she’s somehow a victim in this becuase she is a pretty white girl with short hair? Is fucked. Up.

And you better stop saying. Ok. Because done. To men. Men do not. Deserve violence. Any more. Than anyone else. No one deserves violence defacto for factors. Outside their control. Wtf. So, Jeremy and Chris joked about MonWinn being married and here we have vultures having no lives. Or having lives, but focused on shitting on others because, guess what, they can’t be happy without it.

So what we have here? A bunch of homophobes? Last time I checked we KMs were all called like that, because we didn’t ship their precious crack ship, but here they have a problem with people shipping two guys. 

oh sure, Kara doesn’t do anything else just stares at Lena’s boobs, especially when she is TRAPPED IN A KRYPTONITE CAGE AND TORTURED BY LENA. Calling Mon-El “ex-slave” owner while stanning Lena is the best joke in SG fandom, too bad Scs are too dumb to realize the irony (maybe in some years, Rao knows). Also, saying that someone is a rapist, with basically zero evidences is one of the most disgusting shit you can say, but well - SC shipper, what to expec? It’s like saying that Lena killed homeless people to get the hearts she experimented on in s4, the problem is she murdered Adam and then Lex, so you can start to wonder :)

Yeah, and they gave Lena a villain story, including enslaving people and aliens, raping (oops!) their minds, murdering them with cold blood and torturing the main hero of the show. Irony, again, especially because Mon-El created Legion in Kara’s memory and put a COMET on the Legion rings. While Lena TORTURED Kara and wanted to made her a robot.

The hypocrisy is that for YEARS now SCs have been moaning how disgusting we are for shipping Karamel, how we can’t do it, how much we can screw ourselves with our “ex-slave rapist white privileged fuck boy”, how Karamel is over party blah blah, while HATING ON ACTORS for basically breathing and sending them DEATH THREATS and other shit and they say we are mad because they ship Kara and Lena - look at my dead body rolling on the floor, crying from laughter. Woot, woot!

Is Sc/Lena fandom going to call Melissa homophobe again? Call her a whore? Send her and Jeremy death threats? Try to make their career flop?
