A New Chapter
Wow. The last two weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind. I know I've mentioned that I have a new job. What I didn’t say is that I had to move. And it’s a big move.
A bit of background: my family moved around a bit when I was young but most of my life I’ve lived in Florida. I moved to Seattle for grad school which took almost two years, then I went back home to start my job search.
My new job is in Los Angeles and I just got here yesterday. I’m so thrilled to be here and even though it’s a little overwhelming, I’m excited to spend at least the next few years here exploring this amazing city.

Thanks to Shailene Woodley’s latest interview, those “I Don’t Need Feminism” memes are circulating again. If that’s going to be a thing, can we at least be realistic about why we don’t need it? I don’t need feminism because Alice Paul and Lucy Burns were jailed, beaten into unconsciousness, and force-fed so that I can grab a bagel and vote for the president of my country without thinking twice about it. I don’t need feminism because Luisa Capetillo went to jail in 1919 for wearing pants in public, paving the road so that a short 74 years later, Senators Barbara Mikulski and Carol Braun could become the first women to wear pants on the Senate floor. That was in 1993. 1993. But I don’t need feminism because I can wear pants to work every day. I don’t need feminism because at a time when men were saying, “women aren’t funny”, Tina Fey became the head writer of Saturday Night Live. I don’t need feminism because 29% of television writer jobs now belong to women. Which is a lot when you consider that people are still saying women aren’t funny. I don’t need feminism because Kathrine Switzer fought off a race official who tried to physically drag her off the all male Boston Marathon course and finished the race, forcing him to acknowledge that women are capable of running 26.2 miles. If you’re going to stand up and say you don’t need feminism, at least be grateful to the women who made it possible for you to think you don’t need it.

You will always be too much of something for someone: too big, too loud, too soft, too edgy. If you round out your edges, you lose your edge. Apologize for mistakes. Apologize for unintentionally hurting someone — profusely. But don’t apologize for being who you are.

On the responsibility that comes with her skin color: “I don’t feel like the responsibility I feel comes from any place other than my gut. I feel a responsibility to speak about certain things because I wish someone had spoken about them for me. I know I’m in a unique position where lots of people all over the world are seeing me and connecting with me, and perhaps because of my demographic and how limited representation is for my demographic, I do feel not a responsibility but an impetus to speak. It’s an impetus. It’s 2015, man. We could all use some diversity. It can get tedious to have to explain that I speak English because Kenyans speak English.” - Harper’s Bazaar UK, May 2015

I get why a lot of people hate the whole princess culture aimed at little girls. There’s a hell of a lot of toxic bullshit in there.
But when I was a tiny princess, my dad used to be my royal advisor. He would come to me, and over tea we would discuss the problems of the kingdom. He would tell me that new people wanted to move to the kingdom, and ask me what we should do. Or he would tell me that the teddybears and the dolls were fighting over the enchanted forest, and ask me what to do. Basically, he took the trappings of the princess culture, and used it as a tool to teach me about leadership, civic responsibility, and compassion.
So if you have a little princess around, consider helping her figure out how to run her kingdom. There’s no sense in telling a kid they can’t be a leader, or that they can’t wear sparkles while they do it.

When we say “black lives matter”, it does not imply “white lives don’t matter.”
When we say “women should be respected”, it does not imply “men should not be respected.”
When we say “there’s nothing wrong with being gay”, it does not imply “there’s something wrong with being straight.”
When we say “trans people are people” it does not imply “cis people are not people.”
Us getting rights does not mean your rights are being taken away. You are not a victim. So stop making everything about you.

Monet at Vétheuil (79) Looking for new angles Over the last few years, Monet had painted Vétheuil with its church many times. These oils demonstrate how he kept looking for new angles and different atmospheres. I particularly like the first of these paintings. It’s as if Monet looked over his shoulder at the church and the village one last time before leaving Vétheuil, which he would do, not much later.

When thinking about life, remember this: no amount of guilt can change the past, and no amount of anxiety can change the future.
