This is a question I am curious what the answer is.

Why is demisexuality a queer label?

I've been wondering that for years, even since I first heard it apparently came from a roleplaying game???? It took years before I heard it be used seriously, so I never wanted to ask in case I sounded too mean.

Like... demisexual sounds like a default stance and preference within dating, like you know if it was a slider you'd be all on the side of "I want to build a connection with ANY potential partners" and the other slider end is "I'm fine with open dating, and casual hookups."

It just feels like something you can do completely removed from actually having a sexuality. You can be straight, gay, bi, ace. Demi sounds like it describes that you're more emotional and like connections while also saying you don't like more casual and open dating. But that just sounds like a preference. Kinda like if someone mentions they have only really feel sexually or romantically attracted to people who match some of their preferences.

It also kinda always comes with another sexuality label that actually describes who and what someone can be attracted to, or not. So it sounds like less of a sexuality and just a add-on label or preference. Which I guess isn't too wild either, but then I don't see why having that experience would make it queer, and not just something deeply personal?

I don't know if the society and reactions part is needed, but if it is, I feel like gay, trans, ace is going to have more people start bickering if you simply describe your sexuality, like "I'm a man who dates men." "I don't feel attraction at all, to anyone." "I know I was AMAB but I'm a woman." That's going to have a lot more people starting shit. Meanwhile if you say "I don't feel attracted sexually or romantically to someone I don't have a strong connection to." Is going to be pretty accepted as a stance.

So yeah... why?

I've known some people who insisted on that label who really were just bog standard straight people who were a little shy or didn't like casual sex...

However, I've also known a lot of people who just never experience attraction until they've known some coworker for 10 years and then one day, bam, lust turned up to 11. I know a couple of women who met some dude when they were young, stayed up all night talking, and then were into him... but who've literally never been attracted to a single other person. This isn't just lower libido than average: this is something out of the ordinary that could use a name.

i've been poking at this too long to care how visually appealing it is anymore. My headcanons for the main characters' sexualities, based on canon information! (has no bearing on ships.) Canon speculation below the cut.

marcille (bi): fascinated by romance and loves romance. we only see her show explicit interest in a male (fictional character (General Halleus from the book series she loves)), but i don't think she's fully straight.

falin (aro? ace? lesbian? genderqueer?): falin's only interest in relationships in canon is 'she considered accepting shuro's proposal because she was afraid nobody else would want her, but felt it'd be unfair to him because she had no feelings for him'. i consider whether she's aroace or a lesbian or maybe bi/pan, and she also seems like she might have some genderqueer feelings, based on some of her discomfort with her body and wearing certain types of femme clothing. (Also the fact that she‘s part male dragon.) Since she ends the story going on a journey for herself, it feels like she'll finally get the chance to figure out what she wants.

laios (pan, demi): he hasn't shown explicit interest in men, but similar to marcille, i don't feel he's fully straight. He’s aesthetically attracted to monsters, at the very least, so gender probably doesn’t factor in for him. romance/sex just don’t seem to be much of a high priority to him in general, but he did think his ex-fiance was cute and didn't seem uncomfortable with the idea of marriage (just seemed unhappy with being trapped in his hometown), so i feel like demisexuality fits him well.

About his succubus: He was very noticeably not stopped in his tracks by it like Chilchuck and Marcille, but that could possibly be because it just….looked exactly like Marcille, not an obvious fantasy. He started blushing and stammering heavily when it turned into a monster, which like….this boy is definitely a furry/monsterfucker, if anything, but that doesn’t speak on his attraction to actual humans.

I think it speaks for something that the succubi are able to literally read minds and craft the perfect fantasy for their specific target. And for Laios, it wasn’t just “his friend Marcille”. It was a version of his friend Marcille that wasn’t grossed out by monsters, didn’t think he was weird for wanting to be one, and was able to turn Laios into one. It was a Marcille who understood him at his deepest level that made him become a blushing, stammering mess to rival Chilchuck. Which is why I think he’s Demi, and needs a strong emotional connection with someone before he finds them attractive.

kabru (pan): his special interest is people, and he's bold enough with his sexuality to kiss rin despite not being in a relationship with her. so being pan/bi feels appropriate.

chilchuck (bi): he has a wife, and they were childhood friends, so he's definitely allo. but his comments and behavior towards senshi makes me suspect he might be bi, and just never considered the possibility due to being in a committed relationship.

senshi (gay, ace): this is 90% off of vibes. he keeps to himself in the dungeon and doesn't seem to have any need for social company, he's a complete hermit. Being ace makes sense to me, but so would him just having a low social drive. His succubus was 'a woman he hadn't seen since he was a child', but his journal implies it wasn't a romantic/sexual attraction.

namari (bi/lesbian): she is at the very least attracted to women, given her behavior with kiki, but she does make a point to say that kaka is also attractive to her, and her friends at the bar tease her about Kaka being her “new” boyfriend (implying previous boyfriends).

shuro: the token straight (in love with falin, asked her to marry him). i love you shuro <3 (but i can also see him being into men. there's no evidence to the contrary)

izutsumi: aroace. literally no question. her succubus is her mother.

Ever since Bi-han became the grandmaster of the Lin Kuei Clan there have been vast changes in the clan. The cryomancer grandmaster decided that only through his blood can be the grandmaster for centuries. He married another Lin Kuei to have a strong bloodline. 

On the side of that, he has various concubines to dominate his lineage but there is one that has his heart. His love towards her is more than the love for Lin Kuei.

She came out of nowhere. His other concubines said they found her by the river soaking wet and cold. She was his maid. The first time they met, he was just awoken from sleep.

“Grandmaster, I have prepared you a warm bath,” she spoke sitting by the door like the other maids do, waiting for him to wake up every morning. 

Bi-han looks at her, observing her entirely. Her appearance is different from everyone in his clan. Without saying anything, he went to take a bath. At first, he didn’t acknowledge her at all. Just another maid, nothing more.

And he was wrong. The more she serves him, the more warmth he can feel. No one has made him feel like this. From her serving every meal, aiding his wounds and obeying his every wishes. Gentle,kind and beautiful who came to him like he made a wish to a sourcer.

From one child to two and more. Bi-han named every child she gave him. She is quite saddened he never treats his other children like hers. She talked to him to treat his other children more kindly and he did. For her. 

Years have passed, the Lin Kuei Clan grew stronger through Bi-han and peace through her kindness. Even her name isn’t in the top Bi-han family tree, but no one cannot forget the fact that she is his only one. 

Married to another who has powers for the clan. But being with her is for love. She is his truly.

Megatron - Gay

He’s a dom top, he would be a switch in the top/bottom sense but he has some weird hang ups because of the gladiator pits, so connects submissions to loosing and all the consequences that come with that. It would take him a while to get through all that but he’s not the kinda guy to do deep introspection

He prefers holding his partners down rather than any sort of bondage, he also prefers partners that ‘put up a fight’ so to speak. He thinks dominance is something that should be earned so he needs to have a partner who could at least stand up to him

He also offers up some of his older clothes to you, if you're willing to take them. As hard as it is to believe, he is a little obsessed with vanity, and he wants to build that sort of connection with you.

Actually, he is so beyond excited that you can feel the heat emanating off of him. The room gets just a little hotter. Only seconds after this does he regain his composure.

First and foremost, he is worried about binding. He wants you to bind safely, correctly, and be comfortable in your body. He isn't hesitant to the idea, but he's just afraid you'll get a size too small on purpose or wont be able to find one that fits you.

Kuai Liang does everything in his power to make sure you feel comfortable and euphoric in your body. He'll scavenge through His, Bi-Han's, and Tomas' old wardrobes to find you something you like. He'll keep your hair away from Tomas so he can cut, all of it.

Megan winced as another harsh tackle was done against y/n, the girl falling down painfully but springing up, as soon as she was back on her feet y/n had repossessed the ball.

Once she had done that, she sent it through, the ball being recieved and the goal which came from it making Megan cheer excitedly as she ran at y/n instead of Toni who had scored.

The two met in a hug, Megan whispering into her hair at how well she was holding up against the harsh tackles. The crowd cheered at the sight of the two 'friends'.

The game continued and Aston Villa had managed to get a corner, and considering the current 2-0 defeat they were playing, they were scrambling for a goal just before half time.

y/n stayed near Rachel Daly, a woman she was very close with due to England camps and having been taken under the wing of Millie and Rachel when she was first selected as a frightened 18 year old.

The ball was kicked and y/n tracked Rachel and jumped with her, however, as Rachel flicked her head at the ball y/n found herself in the blonde's way.

Rachel's head connected with her own, hurting the latter much more than the former, y/n's body hit the ground painfully, her wrist being the only thing stopping her.

y/n shouted in pain as Megan booted the ball away and out of play quickly, both her and Rachel rushing to the concussed and sprained girl on the floor.

"Ow." y/n breathed, tears flowing down her face from the pain as Rachel brushed her hand through the girl's hair, apologies rushing from her mouth.

"It's okay, Rach." y/n promised as her medics got to her, wanting to check the Villa player as well.

Rachel sighed but pressed a kiss to y/n's head and followed her medics off the pitch to be checked as the Everton medics finally set down next to y/n.

"It hurts Meg." y/n whispered to the girl who was brushing a hand over her hair calmingly.

The medics confirmed it was a rough sprain on her right wrist as they set to work with bandaging it as y/n winced it pain, Megan wiping her few tears.

"I know baby, but be strong, yeah?" Megan whispered. "You're so strong my girl." She adds as the medics checked her for a concussion, y/n wincing at the light in her eyes.

The minor concussion was confirmed and Megan helped y/n up, walking her off the pitch as the crowd cheered for her. Megan pressed her lips to y/n's cheek and passed her to the other medical staff.

Running back to the pitch as y/n's sub ran on, Megan looked back at the body of her 'best friend' being helped back into the tunnel and sighed, running a worried hand down her face.

It was clear to everyone on that pitch, in the stands and watching that the worry Megan was feeling was far more than the one felt for a friend, it was one felt for a lover.

Megan sat a little closer to y/n than she was before, the dirty blonde trying to wrap her arm around y/n's shoulders. Trying to convince herself that it was what best friends do.

y/n seemingly didn't noticed, too engrossed in 'How to train your Dragon' to see Megan's conflict and she shuffled closer to her best friend and sunk onto her shoulder, finding comfort in Megan's constant warmth.

"And I know we're best friends, but I am probably in love with you, and I don't think that is going to change." Megan finishes and she finally faces y/n.

The wide eyes staring back at Megan frightens her and she opens her mouth to start an excuse train, but y/n is too quick, she pushes forward and collides their lips.

It is a messy first kiss, desperate, deep, illuminated by the movie on the background, orchestrated with the growls of Toothless the dragon, but for the two it couldn't have been more perfect.

And as the two pulled away, Megan tucked a strand of soft hair behind y/n's ear, relieved she felt the same, and couldn't help but softly place her lips against y/n's soft ones once more.

Successor Trio HCs in No Particular Order let's gooo

Matt is a lefty, Near is ambidextrous and Mello is right-handed. On that note, Mello's handwriting is a Rosetta stone worthy nightmare, Near's is so neat it looks printed, and Matt almost exclusively types bc dysgraphia.

All Wammy kids used fake names instead of their aliases when on trips. Near, Mello and Matt's were Nyx, Melvin and Manuel. Guess who'd gotten to choose his own, and which one had been assigned by Roger.

All three are some flavor of trans bi. (I could elaborate and give backstories but it'd probably take a wall of text)

Near was the first (and only, until Matt's arrival) person Mello bonded with when he got to Wammy's, as he taught the older boy the ins and outs of life in the House and in turn Mello would tell him stories from the outside.

Mello had known for years one of those days he'd end up running away, and had managed to put away some money by trading cigarettes for objects or money with other kids and stealing little ornaments from around the House to then pawn.

Matt has insane auditory memory. He doesn't even need to pay attention, if he's heard it it'll just come back to him. Whenever he actually needed to study something he either went to the teacher and gave them the ol' puppy eyes until they explained it to him or he'd ask Mello or Linda depending on the subject.

While never really being friends or understanding each other much, Matt and Near never truly disliked each other either and though they never really asked, one would happily help the other out, need be.

Jealousy aside, they were both too smart to blame each other for their failing friendship with Mello -> he was obviously the problem.

They're all pretty messy, but while Mello still knows exactly where everything is and Near likes to tidy up every once in a while, Matt has definitely had to buy new goggles only to check the freezer for fries months later and find his old ones half-buried in the ice.

Both Near and Mello are picky eaters, but in opposite ways. Near feels personally attacked by strong flavors and Mello hates anything too bland. They do agree on which textures are good or bad, though.

So, Matt can't really cook, but he's learned how to distill spirits for funsies. He likes to come up with ungodly concoctions and taste them like fine wine.

Mello is quite a good actor, and being so high-masking he's developed a bunch of personas to serve different purposes throughout the years. But on the other side of the coin it's become almost impossible for him to genuinely connect with others, which is why Matt seems to be his only real friend despite his very social nature.

Mello has a pretty high alcohol tolerance, but one time Matt dared him to chug a glass of one of his experiments and it completely fd him up, took him out for hours.

This is pretty much fanon I think, but Near is one kinky mf.

The SEES sexuality (plus a bonus)

To break up the persona 2 content and feed my persona 3 fans, have some thoughts on the SEES’ sexualities. Excluding ken, of course, and koromaru lol.

Yukari Takeba

Possibly a hot take for the p3 fans, but Yukari...isn’t my cup of tea. So, I don’t tend to comb over her character the same way I do Minato lol. So, the only real thing I have to go on for her sexuality is vibes, and the movies to say that she seems like she’s a bit of a man-hating lesbian type. Maybe she doesn’t know it, but she’s got that vibe to me.

Mitsuru Kirijo

Mitsuru vibes like she’s got too many gender issues to be dealing with sexuality too, but I think she vibes like she, like Yukari, likes women more than men. But, she also vibes to me like she doesn’t exactly look to date, maybe is some flavor of asexual and/or aromantic.

Akihiko Sanada

Akihiko is so fuckin’ gay. Namely for Shinji, but he doesn’t seem to show any interest in women in general in my opinion. I mean, he’s got a whole fan club that he seems to avoid more than anything, and while part of that is his tunnel vision on fighting shadows and protecting his friends, him and Shinjiro definitely have somethin’ more there lol. So, I think Akihiko is pretty solidly gay. At least for the most part, I’ll give him some bisexual wiggle room with Kotone.

Fuuka Yamagishi

Fuuka is a weird one. Like Yukari, she doesn’t really spark a lot of combing through and picking apart, but she also doesn’t give any strong energy. I can see her going either way, being hetero, or being bi, or maybe even having no real interest in relationships. But, if I had to chew on it, I’d say she’s maybe bisexual, or lesbian. She seems to have a fat ass crush on her best friend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she got flustered about Aki being shirtless, or seeing Shinjiro being a sweetie.

Minato Arisato

This is gonna be another slightly heated one, but I think Minato is pretty firmly gay, or maybe grey-ace or some level of aromantic. Because in the game, his relationship with men seems just...so much more intimate. Like, Kenji gave him a damned choker, and Hidetoshi refused to frame him for power. Mans gave up his life goal to protect Minato. Something’s there. In contrast, his bonds with the women, while not stiff, don’t feel like they develop natural chemistry. Plus, in the movies, I just never got the vibe that he liked damn near anyone outside of Ryoji. So, I can’t really see him liking women almost at all. He’s either grey-ace, gay, or ryoji-sexual to me lol.

Shinji Aragaki

Shinji strikes me pretty strongly as unbothered by relationships. He doesn’t seem very interested in dating, since...well, y’know, his personal shit. That being said, he does strike me as pretty firmly bisexual. He has no real desire for a relationship, but he’d sleep with a woman or a man, Aki or Kotone, doesn’t really matter to him.

Aigis

I don’t think Aigis’ asexual like some might assume because she’s a robot. After all, she ends up basically growing a proper sense of self/a soul in the game, so she’s pretty well human. But! I do see her as demisexual and biromantic. She takes emotional connection to develop any sexual feelings, but either gender can get her romantic attraction.

Ryoji Mochizuki

There’s no competition. Ryoji is aggressively bisexual. He’s not choosing shit, he wants both lol.

Junpei Iori

I think Junpei is heterosexual, but bi-curious. Because, naturally, he seems very interested in women, but he seems to have a big ol’ crush on Akihiko, and maybe Minato. Would this grow into a proper bisexuality? No clue, but let’s be serious, we all know it doesn’t matter.

Fruits Basket Queer Headcanons

The more I watch and read Fruits Basket, the more I get the sense that no one is straight here. Well... almost no one. So, in honor of pride month, here are my queer headcanons for the cast of Fruits Basket!

(Disclaimer that these are my own personal headcanons, obviously nothing official, etc... I try to draw on evidence from the text, but I'll admit I'm occasionally going purely off vibe. Also, I'm bi and genderfluid, so that's the lens I'm bringing to this. I'd love to hear your headcanons, especially if they differ from mine! Enjoy!)

Genderfluid and/or genderqueer: Ayame and Ritsu

I (probably somewhat controversially) think a lot of the gender non-conformity among Fruits Basket characters is just that: gender non-conformity. Momiji is one example; he dresses in girls' clothing (though not "like a girl") until his growth spurt, but it seems important to him to be seen as a man from at least that point forward.

Ritsu is someone whose gender identity and/or nonconformity really should've been explored more in the manga - as written, it feels like Ritsu's exploration of gender was viewed as something he'd grow out of, rather than a search for understanding himself. He doesn't really seem to mind being identified as either male or female, though he obviously feels a lot of shame about his comfort with wearing women's clothes (though no one around him when we meet him really seems to mind, which is nice-- I also appreciate that Ritsu was shown to have friends who adore him outside of the Sohmas). Anyway, the fact that he seems okay with being referred to as both a man and a woman is the entire basis for this headcanon.

Ritsu also idolizes Ayame, and I think part of this stems from Ayame's own security in his non-traditional gender presentation. We don't really get a lot of Ayame's thoughts on gender, despite his line of work, but he strikes me as the sort of person who would enjoy playing with his own gender presentation and would be more than open to exploring his gender identity (and probably has!). I think Ayame would lean more toward having an expansive view of masculinity rather than dressing more feminine when he feels more feminine, but I also think he would embrace the different ways people might perceive his gender.

Transgender Woman: Akito Sohma

This I think is quite clear in canon. Akito was assigned male at birth, then transitioned to female.

What makes it hard for some people to see Akito as trans is that the reason she was assigned male at birth was not the typical reason people are assigned male at birth in our world (it was her mother's demand, rather than a guess based on the shape of her genitals), but I don't think that makes her any less trans.

Under the Ace and/or Aro Umbrellas

This umbrella is a little tricky for several of these characters, because they've been forbidden from dating, or had very controlling parents, or thought they'd only hurt anyone they loved, so they haven't necessarily had time to figure out whether they've just repressed that part of themselves or they just don't experience attraction at all/without a strong emotional connection first. (Not everyone needs time to figure that out, though!) But anyway, here's who I think would eventually find themselves under at least one of these umbrellas!

Asexual/Aromantic: Kazuma

I love the tidbit that Kazuma tried dating women, but talked so much about Kyo that he never got a second date. I like the interpretation of him as a gay man, but to me, he reads as asexual/aromantic. Dating just doesn't even seem to be on his radar!

Demisexual/Demiromantic: Kyo, Shigure, Machi

A lot of the fandom sees Kyo as demi, and I'm totally here for that interpretation of him. He generally seems annoyed by or frightened of girls who aren't Tohru (frightened either when there's a risk of transforming, or when Kagura is involved). Also, it's CUTE that Kyo takes after his dad (Kazuma) in this way.

At first blush, it seems very unlikely Shigure is under the ace umbrella, but I couldn't stop thinking about his brief relationship with Mayu. He's the one who suggested they date, yet he seemed completely disinterested in her. He did sleep with Ren, but that was only for revenge and because he imagined Akito would look like her if she'd been allowed to grow up as a woman. I genuinely believe all his "high school girls" ickiness was an act, much like most of his personality.

It doesn't seem like Machi can totally tell if/when she likes something (or someone!). This makes me wonder if she's just never had feelings for anyone before Yuki.

Demiromantic: Rin, Hiro

Rin seems open to sexual relations with people other than Haru, but I genuinely can't see her having romantic feelings for anyone other than him. I see Hiro similarly with respect to Kisa. I think, if they ever split, it would take an extremely long time for him to even be open to falling for someone else.

Under the Bi/Pan+ Umbrella

So, I'm not making a distinction between these two (and other orientations that fall under the same umbrella, like poly- or omnisexual) because that seems like a very personal, internal conversation. I know some people make a distinction between the way bi and pan people experience attraction, but some don't, and that feels too prescriptivist for my purposes here. So, these are characters who I think experience attraction to multiple genders!

Tohru obviously falls for Kyo, but she also thinks Akito is cute, she thinks Rin is "shapely" and "beautiful" (her words!), and she goes along with it when Saki talks about them getting married.

Yuki ends up with Machi (and I love them together!) but I think Kyo was his first crush. His arc is also very relatable for a lot of queer folks (myself included!). And he's a disaster. Long live bisexual disaster Yuki Sohma!

Shigure is tricky, because the flirtation between him and Ayame could just be a joke, but I personally think it's a joke that arose out of some fun nights spent together...

Akito obviously likes men, but she also flirts with Tohru when they first meet.

Saki talks about marrying both Tohru and Kazuma. She's probably joking about Kazuma, but she's generally a very literal person, so I don't think she's joking about Tohru. She also marries a foreigner canonically, and that foreigner is probably a man.

Momiji talks about finding an amazing sweetheart-- not an amazing wife or girlfriend!!-- one day. I think he was being very intentional in not specifying his future partner's gender.

Hatori is the one I feel least sure of, but my headcanon is that he gets so annoyed and embarrassed by Shigure and Ayame because he doesn't want anyone to know he was totally part of at least a few of those trysts...

Mutsuki and Hajime are definitely together, right? And it seems like the fandom mostly sees Mutsuki as bi, which... yeah, that tracks.

Hatsuharu's first love was Yuki, and his last love was Rin.

Kakeru has a girlfriend, but for some reason, I have it in my head that he always refers to Kyo as Yuki's "hot cousin"? Did I just imagine that? Anyway... even if I did make that up, I think his backstory is a great analogy for the experience of coming out. He was trying to fit in a box and decided he was done with it. Pure chaotic bi energy.

For Ayame, see Shigure and Hatori above. (Also, “I am a bottom ALL THE WAY!!!”)

Gay and Lesbian

Hiroshi has always struck me as gay. I can't really explain it. I usually have absolutely awful gaydar, so it's odd that he gives me such clear gay vibes. I wrote him as gay in my longfic, Bloom Within Us, and I'll probably always write him as gay.

President Takei obviously has a crush on Yuki. We don't really see him show interest in anyone else (partially because he's such a minor character). He also seems to still be a bachelor in Another, which could be because he can't legally marry yet...

My headcanon that Kunimitsu is gay kind of popped up as I was writing Bloom Within Us. There's no particular reason, and he doesn't give me strong gay vibes or anything.

Hajime and Mutsuki are definitely a couple! (Right?!) And it seems like most of the fandom sees Hajime as gay which... yeah, I can get behind that.

Akimoto (Arisa's senpai from her gang) is another character who gives me such strong vibes that I thought it was canon that she was a lesbian. Whoops. Anyway, I headcanon that Akimoto is gay, and referenced that in one of my oneshots.

Controversial omission: Arisa Uotani. She says she likes Kureno because he reminds her of Tohru, but she doesn't like Tohru? Yes, she gives me major queer vibes but this to me points to her being straight. Also, based on the way she reacts to her friends developing crushes or falling in love (and the way they react to her falling in love), I don't think there's anything between her and Saki or her and Tohru (as much as I love fics that pair her with Saki!). I also think not every relationship with lots of physical affection and strong feelings of love has to be romantic.

Anon you got me feeling like an elder telling stories to kits again lmao. All righty. Elder Bones gonna teach you a bit about the Guardians.

Troutfur and I are building out a rough draft for their language too so I'll give you a preview of that, too. Let's start there, in fact.

GUARDMEW

Is an SVO order language, just like English. We Cultivate Roses. Subject, Verb, Object. This is going to come up a lot in BB!ASC when Berryheart, the Evil Educator, critiques a ton of Sunbeam's grammar.

Unlike Clanmew with each verb morpheme being used in full to describe a past action and shortened for present tense (pabrpabrpabr vs pabrpabr) Guardmew uses suffixes, also just like English. Sunbeam picked up the habit from her mentor, and Berryheart HATES that she will say "Pabrpabryr" instead of "Pabrpabrpabr."

But anyway, forget the setup we've got going for ASC. Let's just talk a little more about Guardmew.

It is in the same lingustic family as Clanmew, descending from Lakemew. Of all the living languages, Guardmew is closest to the ancestral form, since it was born directly from refugees fleeing eastward, from the tyranny of Holly Leaves.

They also have the concept of Threat Level, with pronouns built around skill for people, and benignness for everything else. That means, they have completely separate pronouns for cats, but classify plants and animals based on how they act on the environment.

For examples, their leader Spiresight shares the same pronouns as their "elders" and most experienced craftsmen. The building they live in will use the "respected object" pronoun. A plant with an infectious mold, or an invasive weed, will have a "malignant" pronoun.

CULTIVATION CULTURE

While Tribe cats encourage traveling, Guardians are the opposite. They believe in the value of setting down roots, and cultivating your homespace. If you go somewhere, they expect you to take care of it well.

The Church that Dovewing found is not the only place where Guardians live in that geographic region. They tend to name their groups after a major landmark-- she found the Guardians of the Spire.

They manage their land in a way that attracts wild animals, and then attempt to selectively hunt the animals that live on that range. In a way, it's like a carnivore's approach to agriculture.

If the Clans have a specialty in combat, and the Tribe has a specialty in hunting, Guardians can be considered to have a specialty in construction.

AFTERLIFE SYSTEM

If they have a Hell, it was made by Sol. But I'm not sure if they have one of those.

They DO have a heaven though-- they call it The Firmament.

The Firmament is the ground, but it's specifically your home soil. To Guardians, the more people who are buried somewhere, the more power that ground has. They believe that buried bones are proof that the soul still remains within the Firmament, and remains are NEVER to be disturbed.

They try to avoid the graveyards of humans and bury their prey neatly in "mass graves," pits dug neatly and only totally covered bi-weekly. Because there's such a strong taboo against disturbing remains, they are VERY careful about where Guardians are buried, and try to cover them with carefully arranged stones and woody plants so these graves are not disturbed.

After death, the flesh of the body must rot away into soil. They believe that this allows you to experience The Firmament TRULY, as a mole or an earthworm does. It becomes a new world, and you no longer see dirt, but the connections between everything.

You could describe this as "Monotheistic." They believe that when your flesh melts away, you join The Firmament. Your bones are like a conduit of the wishes you have for your loved ones still above the ground... but, these too will someday melt away! That's part of it too!

The Sky, in contrast, is a terrible, almost evil thing. In English we may say, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade." A Guardian would say, "When the sky rains, the firmament grows mushrooms." Weather is something to be anticipated and handled, ESPECIALLY storms.

New spirits are made from what the mother eats of the Firmament. Berries feed the mice, mice feed the cats, cats return to the Firmament. A cycle, forever.

LEADER POWER

NOTE: I should rename this BB concept, "leader power." Not all cats with these unique abilities, given by an Afterlife System are political leaders-- they're spiritual ones.

One example of this is the Groundskeeper of the Guardians. They are thought to fully reincarnate, taking new bodies over and over. When a Groundskeeper dies, they are put into the same grave as their previous incarnation, and it is believed they gain more power with each death and rebirth.

But, they are not given political authority. They have CONSTRUCTIVE authority-- advising new projects and acting as a liasion between the Firmament and the living.

Cats who are identified as Groundskeeper change their name to their old incarnation. Spiresight is the leader of the Guardians of the Spire. They're identified on their birthday, so all Groundskeepers begin at exactly 1 year old, at least 1 year after the death of the old incarnation.

Spiresight is able to "see" the world as an interred skeleton does, he is in a permanent state between life and death in their eyes.

He can "feel" when something new enters his Firmament, gage it based on its paws, weight, movement. He can can tell when a plant is sick based on how strong its roots are, or if something is being pulled up. He knows where all the skeletons are, feels the worms in the dirt, and can tell the weather from the sway of the plants above.

He can tell if a plant is sick, but not animals. Because of this, the Groundskeeper is NOT INCLUDED IN MEDICAL PROCEDURES. He may point a doctor in the way of good herbs, but all Guardians are expected to know medical knowledge significantly beyond first aid.

The Groundskeeper leads religious ceremonies, funerals, and new projects. He is socially expected to not leave the center of the territory too often, especially during storms. That aside, the Groundskeeper is allowed to have a life and family of their own, including adopting kits and having mates.

OTHER THINGS

Time for a closing list of random facts.

An adult member of the Guardians, fully trained, is called a Gardener.

They have an extreme and severe taboo against other supernatural entities. They believe that they are "of the sky" and harshly reject anything "unnatural."

This is likely because of Holly Leaves, who tried to force a star-based religion upon their ancestors.

The Guardians, like all societies, have their problems too. They don't welcome cats who return after a wander and heavily discourage leaving.

If you're going to leave, leave permanently. A dandelion seed does not return on the wind.

So returning cats, traders, and repeat visitors are treated more coldly on subsequent visits. Not always hostile-- but the welcome is not gracious.

Cats who do have to leave on a quest or for some reason have a "quarantine" period when they return. A cleansing ritual.

Kittens are named by their families, usually after consulting with the Groundskeeper. Names are often reused through generations.

A name carries association with whoever had it last; it's not quite a reincarnation so much as it is a "continuation"

Because of this, there's very rarely any new names. A cat who enters the Guardians keeps their old name, and it is entered into their "list" after they die.

This is how they get some weird ones, like Boots and Cinnamon.

When a Guardian does something awful, they're buried beyond the Firmament and their name is no longer used.

I haven't worked out their gender systems yet.

Thank you so much for being so kind and replying to my ask! I think I understand it a little better now and I do agree with some of it. There were really sweet moments between them that made me happy but OH how it hurt to see buck just standing outside the restaurant. Yeah he freaked out a little but even lou said it wasn't ok of tommy and he wouldn't have done that. His defenders should really look into that lol judging from his interviews, he is a buddie endgame shipper and I love that

I'm kinda used to people blaming everything on buck but it still sucks. If he "shoved tommy back in the closet", they also have to acknowledge the comment tommy made when eddie was there...thank goodness he was so oblivious

But I do blame the writers a little bit for making tommy seem so...distant? Mysterious? There's potential because he has a connection to their world but we don't know nearly enough about him. We know chim, hen and bobby were good with him when he left all those years ago but now? Show us!!

Most of all, I hope they are not "done" with buck's storyline because he deserves more. He was barely a side character for the remaining episodes and that made me really sad. Oliver looks happier again though, so maybe there's hope?

I think they honestly kinda fumbled last season because of the shorter season and how much shit they tried to fit like I was saying this before but s8 should’ve been treated like s1/s2 where like you have some character building and like personal shit and then keep the rest fairly uncomplicated with like a few big things here and there and a strong sense of found family in it and hitting that balance of not overloading yourself while also keeping things interesting

Instead we kinda had boom big thing boom big thing boom here is an even more complicated big thing boom another big thing and it all felt very frazzled and all over the place and also really fragmented

And cos of all these big things you end up not able to give any one big thing the levity or development or the depth it can have

Leading to a mess of having buck pushed straight to the sidelines story wise after two eps of his bi arc then bobby having shit from Minnesota but also cartel and also house getting burnt down but also him being suicidal but also him nearly dying and us getting no scenes from the team at his bedside and then you have Eddie and his doppelgänger mess and chimney and his enciphillitus and it’s just all gives you a little bit of an overload without ever getting the pay off or the development

Like I love the show and love the writing for the most part but I gotta say s8 had a strong start that I thought it’d battle for my fav season but then it just started slipping when you could feel how limited in eps they were and also the writing style of not planning ahead for a lot of things

I know Buck wasn’t originally written as bisexual but looking back to season 2, you actually can interpret buck being attracted to eddie. He may even had a little crush on him. But Eddie being canonically straight didn’t show any romantic or sexual interest towards buck. I think if he was canonically gay and interested in buck and made any moves towards it, he could have had his bi awakening or realization back then and could have caught serious romantic feelings for Eddie. You can’t deny some parallels between his first meeting with eddie and with tommy. The unknown jealousy and the ranting about them. But because eddie is straight and never showed any sign of beeing into buck, his (maybe) feelings for eddie turned into an incredibly great friendship. That’s why I think his feelings for Tommy are very real and don’t have anything to do with Eddie. Tommy is canonically gay and reciprocated the feelings and attraction to buck. He was the one who made the first move and kissed buck. Buck was clearly interested in him and tried to get his attention. I do think that if tommy wasn’t interested in him and didn’t kiss him, buck still wouldn’t have figured out that he’s bisexual and his feelings towards him probably would’ve eventually turned into friendly feelings. I personally tend to hope for bucktommy rather than buddie but I wouldn’t be mad if buddie became canon. But I think the only way would be to make eddie demisexual, because there were really no signs that he likes men in any way other than his strong connection and chemistry with buck. Different from buck where you can retrospectively see many unintentional signs.

Oh yeah! I want to make it abundantly clear that I’m all in the bucktommy train 100%

I fell in love with them and I’m more in favor of them than the ship that shall not be named. I can’t stress it enough, I want bucktommy to be endgame. I’m a bucktommy slut.

I do believe you can look back and see clues that maybe buck was into eddie, whether that was intentional or not. I believe the writers accidentally queer coded him and when they noticed they decided to run with it when they got the green light from the network.

But as you said, he could have had an initial crush on a friend and that changed with time. And that is completely fine! It doesn’t mean he had been in love with him the whole time and repressing it. Of course there is the possibility that buck and eddie can be an item, if the writers decide to go that route.

That being said, as of now, there are no concrete evidence on screen that buck and eddie were/are going in that direction. Like you said, eddie hasn’t shown he’s into men/buck and if buck was into eddie since the beginning and vice versa, i believe the writers would have pushed that queer coding to the max she-ra style to force the network to get them together. There had been opportunities for the writers to not be that ambiguous.

And yes! The canon bi buck storyline is not about Eddie and it shouldn’t be even if buck and eddie are supposed to be endgame. All the signs since 07x03 (when Buck touched Tommy’s shoulder and we all got a little bit of the gay vibe) have pointed that Buck had been into tommy and mistook who he was placing the jealousy on during 07x04. It’s a classic trope and I hate that b*ddie stans conveniently forgot how misdirection works to feed into what they want (not only that, but also stating as fact). When 07x05 rolled around and we got the coming out scene, it’s clear to me that there was no intention to place bucks attraction to men on eddie or eddie also realizing he’s queer. It would have been the perfect opportunity to sprinkle in some queer eddie but there was not even a subtle hint of that in that entire scene and I honestly hope their friendship stays that way.

Not to be a bitch but, why can’t they “just” be friends? It’s so rare to have these archetypes of characters be as vulnerable and devoted to each other, without an ounce of toxic masculinity, being true friends and nothing else. I whole heartedly believe what buck and eddie have is even bigger than family or romance, they are each others rocks and defining them as brothers or “husbands” does a disservice to their relationship. I think of them more as platonic soulmates. They are others ride or die, which reminds me a lot of Marjan and Paul from lone star (they have a very similar dynamic and despite theoretically having the possibility of being a couple - as a straight woman and straight man - I don’t see them going that way ever because that’s not what their relationship is. They love each other, would literally die for each other but are not and will never see each other as potential romantic partners).

On a waaaaaaaaay lighter note: I’m excited for next episode. We are surely getting more bucktommy and I simply can’t wait to see what the writers have cooking up for this lovely ship!

Jungkook, my Ace? King

After receiving an atrocious ask that was all over the place from believing Taekooker lies, to concluding that JK treats all of his hyungs equally and that there is nothing special about the way he treats Jimin to concluding that JK has a gf (probably from that grainy video) it got me thinking… Jungkook is really hard to read. He’s definitely queer, and I used to think JK is gay, but has he ever shown attraction to a man besides Jimin? Not that I’ve seen. On the contrary, we have seen Jimin literally bark over the mention of Usher and all of his bi colors in photoshoots, song releases, personal outfit choices ect. I do hate the Jimin is a flirt narrative though and that all bisexuals are so sexual that they will abandon long term partners for sex with xyz gender. That shit pisses me off and is not what I’m saying at all, but one could argue that Jimin has displayed *interest* in men and women. I can’t recall a single time Jungkook has ever given the look to another man or even a women. The cishets really really reach for those examples. I do think part of it could be chalked up to JK’s neurodivergence. It’s 2024, if you don’t see JK as a neurodivergent person then wtf planet are you on. But, I also (and hopefully I’m not projecting) see Jungkook as a person on the ace spectrum. Now, before any of you ignorant and uneducated fools show up in my ask box, ace people can have sex. Some do and some don’t. If I had to guess, I think Jungkook is probably demisexual. He needs that strong connection (which he has with Jimin). And that type of a connection could be something he only feels with a man or with men and women who knows, I don’t. But he definitely feels it with Jimin. And Jimin isn’t even strict in labeling himself as a man in the traditional sense. Unless JK shares more with us in the future, we won’t really know his sexuality. And that’s fine by me, but he in particular seems to be someone that everyone wants to label. And, for a while, I was putting him in the homosexual box because I obviously believe he’s with Jimin. But, I think there is always room for gray. And me being an ace person myself, I can see how Jungkook could fit an ace label. I’m by no means saying what he is and isn’t. All I’m confident in is that he’s Jiminsexual. Jimin is his person after all. That’s who he’s having sexy time with. But something different to think about. And no, Jungkook doesn’t treat Jimin like all his other hyungs. The evidence doesn’t point to that at all, and everyone knows it, so just stop.
