Hiruzen Sarutobi... or the character that confuses me the most. I don't know what to make of him. Let me explay you why.
When we're introduced to him, he's pretty old, wise and powerful. He even seens nice. He is amused by Naruto's antics. You want to sympathise with him. And honestly why not ? There are things that infuriate me during the chunin exams (the fact it even exists). Then you have his ending. It's executed very well. I did find it badass. You see his regrets, his weaknesses (with Orochimaru), his summon clearly tells him he's weak or pathetic (I can't remember the word) but he does the sacrifice. You can see it's very difficult for him, he struggles a lot. During the chunin exams, we get to see how scary Orochimaru is. Everything is made to show that Hiruzen was very powerful in his days and became weak with getting old. But still, he does his best and makes the sacrifice with the hope of a better future. Plus the fight between Gaara and Naruto does a great work as a parallel of this one.
It's actually interesting to see that even if Hiruzen can be powerful and brave, he can be very weak and a coward in so many ways. You do see it with Orochimaru, but also with how he let Danzo do whatever he wants, and how he let the villagers and everyone in Konoha treats Naruto like shit. It doesn't show him in a positive way obviously, but it makes him interesting, even human I'd say. But I have a main beef with him or the way he's written.
I think his role is never properly adressed in everything that went wrong in Konoha. Danzo and Orochimaru are treated as the villains they are. The narrative put the blame on Danzo for the Uchiha massacre - as it needed. But it kind of forgets Hiruzen in the process.
Sasuke, when he ressurects the kages with Orochimaru's help, questions him. And he's fucking right to do it. Why did the hokage let the massacre happen ? We're said that Danzo ordered the massacre and manipulated Itachi in doing it. But what about Hiruzen ? We get to learn that he wanted a diplomatic solution, but never had the occasion to find it. Is it because he didn't really bother or because Danzo didn't take his decision in consideration ? Probably a bit of both. But why did Danzo have such power in the first place ? Because Hiruzen is a coward. That's it. But the narrative doesn't really blame him, as if he's supposed to be the good "guy". We even have Minato put the blame on himself. And I was like "what ?". Minato has faults, that's not the subject. But the massacre happened because Hiruzen didn't do his job (protecting his villagers). I would have prefered if Hiruzen was clearly blamed for it. And it's actually insulting for Sasuke who is just there to be honest.
I'd like to add Hiruzen letting Danzo do everything he wanted (like having his fucking army) did cause problems to other problems. Kabuto and Sai come to mind.
I want to talk about Naruto. It's never (but really never) adressed that Hiruzen failed Naruto. The boy was ostracised because he was the host of Kurama... and what did Hiruzen do ? I'm not saying he should have adopted him... but he could have done more (like finding him a family). And the secret was obviously revealed, or no adult would know Naruto had Kurama sealed in him. Hiruzen was the one with the power there, he could have done something more. Well, what really bothers me is the fact that it's not said that Hiruzen failed to keep his promise and to protect Naruto, the jinchuriki of his village. Naruto never had the opportunity to do. He's angry against the villagers, but never the hokage. And I do find it weird. The narrative could have so easily done it. It would have even been better for Naruto's dream.
He wants to be hokage to protect his friends, and his village. That's great. But imagine if Naruto said something like "I will find ways to be better than Hiruzen. I don't want the children to be treated like they were during his time". It could have been a parallel to his resolve at the ending of Zabuza arc when he says he wants to find his nindo and be the ninja he wants (not the other way around). It's badly written, but do you get the message ?
Anyway... I do believe Hiruzen could be a great character if he wasn't praised so much in the manga. And I hope I made my opinion clear with this post.

I mean, technically Edo Tensei is supposed to bring the body back the way it died, however that is immediately thrown out the window the moment Madara is brought back as his young and fit self instead of the pathetic little old man he was when he saved Obito, and also if having taken the body's eyes should mean that the ED version is blind then Itachi should have been blind because Sasuke got his eyes for the EMS, and that means that Shisui could technically come back with his sight
Also for the EMS thing, it's sort of explained (or as explained as the Naruto canon gets, anyway) that the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan can only be unlocked by taking the eyes of someone closely related by blood like a parent or a sibling, and that their eyes will give "new light", meaning that the blindness of the normal Mangekyō will disappear completely and the EMS will never go blind, but it doesn't say anything about passing on the techniques, as is seen with the fact that Sasuke never gains Tsukuyiomi upon taking Itachi's eyes
For the techniques themselves... I think it's different depending on the technique itself? I mean, ED!Madara blind is still able to use Susano'o and in one of the three versions of Shisui's death he also uses his Susano'o with only one eye left, so once having unlocked the technique it doesn't matter if you have the eyes or not, however techniques like Tsukuyiomi that need eye contact can't probably be used without eyes (I mean, I can't get you in the genjutsu if I can't even see you, right?) or, to some extent, probably Amaterasu since technically the flames pop up where you look, while Obito's version of the Kamui (which is different from Kakashi's, Obito has a close-range Kamui as seen by the fact that he needs to touch someone to get them in Kamui and he can make weapons appear only near himself, while Kakashi has a long-range Kamui as seen by the fact that he's able to Kamui Deidara's arm from far away and swirl away his explosion as well without touching him, meaning that Kakashi needs to point his eye on where he wants the Kamui to work while Obito doesn't need to, it's automatically close to him) could probably still work, since he doesn't necessary need to see where he points the Kamui
Then again the Naruto canon is so full of plot holes that look more like fucking craters than simple holes, so we can do whatever we want and I sincerily doubt we'll do worse than Kishi LMAO

I NEVER IN MY DREAMS EXPECTED Sasuke to share something so SACRED between him and Itachi (the brother he loved more than anything else in the world) with Sakura, or anyone else for that matter.
This was one of the most important gestures in the entire series. And the fact that Sasuke shared this with Sakura, immediately after being released from prison, and before leaving for his redemption Journey, further proves that even though they were apart for so many years, and were enemies in the past years, Sasuke never stopped having that special place in his heart for her.

Lol, Sasuke, weren't you trying to cut off your bonds? Why did you have to do one of the sweetest things you have ever done, to break your bond with this person?
There was no need for him to listen to her words and confession when he was about to leave the village. There was no need for him to give her a soft shy smile, and Thank her for loving him, But Sasuke went out of the way and did all these this things. And he wouldn't have bothered if she meant nothing to him.

"Sakura... Who did this to You!?"
This was the moment where I got to know how important Sakura actually was to Sasuke.
Naruto was lying unconscious right beside him - but he reacted to Sakura's injuries. Because He can't see her hurt. And it was not simple killing intent. He was only focused on Sakura's injuries and repeatedly asked her who hurt her. But Sakura on the other hand was too focused on Sasuke's marks and his darkness consuming him. And her touch and tears were able bring him back to consciousness, and get out his Rampage-Mode. LOL Until this moment, I had no idea that Sakura had that much effect on him.

Sasuke calls Sakura someone dear to him and was even willing to die protecting her, which would mean that he had to give up on his revenge - which meant more than anything else to him.
And then he caught her, and laid her down softly, looked at her with soft and tender eyes, and asked Pakun to take care of her.
(Can You make Uchiha Sasuke any more caring?? :p)
Sasuke catches Sakura in Root Dimension
We don't know what he was thinking in this moment. Why did he catch her in the first place? And why did he keep holding her for longer? Just few moments ago, He himself said that He wouldn't have minded if she fell into the lava, in the other dimension. But now, here He is, not even willing to let her fall on ground.
But that's not all... Why was he looking so intensely in Sakura's eyes? It couldn't be because she saved him. Even Karin and Kabuto saved him from the brink of death many times, But he never spared them even a second glance. What's so different about Sakura?
Lol Sasuke, Your words and Your actions, don't go hand in hand. XD.

Sakura confesses to Sasuke for the 2nd time.
This was when Sasuke was still in darkness. But still Sakura's words were able to shake him. He turns back with sad eyes and a sad smile and calls her annoying again. For making him shake in his resolve. Even if just for a moment. This was important because words never worked on Sasuke. Even Naruto needed to blow off his arm(and his own) to bring him back to senses.
Also... Sasuke putting her in the harsh genjutsu was too much intense for the entire fandom. Also... What I fail to understand why did he even bother to listen to Sakura's confession and what Kakashi had to say about Sakura's emotions,in the first place. I mean, he could have just left. Why was he even trying to reason with Sakura's feelings.

Sasuke had always kept Sakura on the same pedestal, that he kept Naruto on. Sakura always occupied Sasuke's thoughts whenever he thought of his good times and dear ones. She always had a place in his heart and thoughts.

Lol, I did a double Flip when I read this panel for the first time XD. I was like... Wait a moment... Did Sasuke just refer to Sakura as "MY WIFE"?... And when I was like - "Okay... That's normal.", He dropped the second bomb - "MY WIFE IS NOT WEAK".
If You can get Uchiha Sasuke to call you, "My Wife", in front of lot of people,AGAIN AND AGAIN, and defend you in your absence, and make HEAVY STATEMENTS like this for you, Then bro... You know he loves you.

First, because this made those SK shippers shut the fuck up up.
Second, Because Sasuke literally "low-key" confesses in front of Sarada, Choucho and Naruto, that he loves his wife, and Sarada was born because they made love. Never thought Sasuke would be so direct about these things XD.

A bittersweet idea. As he is dying Itachi makes Sasuke promise to him that he'd looks after Itachi's darling wellbeing. After some time passes when the darling tags along with him and Team Taka, Sasuke starts developing feelings for them.
This is so sad😭. Itachi really is a sweetheart, to think about that he even moments before his death only had his darling’s safety in mind...

Sasuke promising to take care of Itachi’s s/o
💙🍡I think there’s a chance that Sasuke knows Itachi’s darling personally if we assume that they’re from the Leaf Village just like he is. In that case Itachi took them after he massacred his whole clan and then it’s also very likely that the darling and Sasuke had a very close relationship before since the darling functioned probably as a second mother for Sasuke who had been always somewhat neglected by his parents for Itachi. I also think that in this case Sasuke might have had an easier time to give this promise to Itachi when knowing them beforehand and having good memories with them.
💙🍡There are plenty of reasons why Itachi made Sasuke promise him this. He’s still a highly ranked criminal and so far always was there to protect you, but in death he won’t be able to do this anymore. But he knows that there’s still the danger that people will use you and use you as either a bait when not knowing that he’s dead yet or make you pay for his crimes. If we go with the theory that you and Sasuke know each other then he might have done it as well to bring Sasuke a bit joy back.
💙🍡Sasuke was completely devastated after finding out what happened to his brother and if there were ever any doubts about not keeping the promise to his deceased brother they were completely erased now, Sasuke hoping to find some answers to questions he didn’t even fully knew himself from you. But he was also interested in you himself. If we go with the scenario where he knew you since he had been little and had a close relationship to you he’ll also want to see you again since he missed you after you disappeared, people either assuming that due to how close you and Itachi were tha you had either left with him or had been kidnapped. And how much Sasuke had secretly always hoped that it was the latter.
💙🍡You had already been prepared for this, not being really surprised when Sasuke suddenly appeared in the small house you were kept in. Itachi had already informed you that he would die and ask his brother to take care of you. You were curious to meet him since Itachi often talked about him, or if you knew him since he had been a baby, were on the one hand glad you see him again. On the other hand it might have been a new layer of heartache for you to see how devastated he was and how bitter he had seemed to become.
💙🍡One thing stays the same, no matter if you knew him before or not. You were also deeply saddened over Itachi’s death and tried to comfort his brother. I feel like since Sasuke doesn’t like showing emotional weakness he would accept your help and comfort in this case more, especially if he knew you beforehand.
💙🍡I suppose that if you were a ninja before, doesn’t matter if you’re from the Leaf or somewhere else, Itachi most likely trained you so you would be able to defend yourself in the worst case scenario and Sasuke will most likely continue training you. He would be a lot stricter on you than his brother would be.
💙🍡The one thing that made Sasuke most likely fall for him is the fact that you didn’t hate him for what he’s done and also, despite saying openly that you didn’t think destroying a whole village would be right, never really tried stopping him. But at the same time you also lectured him when he did something stupid and hurt himself, kind of like a mother with a reckless child. You understood him and when with you Sasuke was also able to show a bit more openly about his feelings and his pain which was a bigger relief than he had expected. But it felt good to finally let some of his pent-up emotions out.
💙🍡He wanted to know more about you and how life had been with Itachi. And you told him everything he wanted to know, from the moment Itachi had kidnapped you to the moment he had left you and told you it would be his last time that you would see him. And I think that added most likely only more pain on Sasuke, hearing how wrong he and everyone else had really been about Itachi. And you knew that the best.
💙🍡I feel like if Sasuke knew you before he would develop feelings a bit easier for you since he still had his old attachment for you deep inside of him and seeing you taking care of him again and helping him despite him protesting caused his heart to flutter in his chest. But in this scenario he might be not only a bit confused because he knows that he’s in love with his brother’s darling, but also because you were for him always like a second mother.
💙🍡It’s almost ironic for him to know that he’s madly in love with Itachi’s darling, making him wonder if Itachi knew that this might happen. I also believe that his selfishness wouldn’t be as strong as normally since he feels somewhat bad. You’re his brother’s darling. He doesn’t want to destroy this. But I also believe that the more he would think about it, the more he would start believing that Itachi did this all on purpose and that it’s his job now to take care of you.
💙🍡I discovered an amazing thought whilst thinking about this. I think it’s very possible that Sasuke will treat you a lot better as if you would be just any other person. You understand him, share the same pain with him, genuinely care for him. But the biggest part for him would be that the knowledge that you’re his brother’s darling would be always present in his mind and he knows that his brother cherished you most so he feels like he shouldn’t go too rough on you.
💙🍡Expect him to keep you all the time away from Suigetsu, who constantly wants to flirt with you and touch you to see Sasuke annoyed, and a jealous Karin, who constantly looks at you with a somewhat degrading look and wants Sasuke’s attention for herself. Jugo might be sometimes allowed next to you, but since he has his anger issues Sasuke wouldn’t let that happen too often. So overall you’ll stay with him all the time and everyone in the team will often be harshly lectured from him to stay away from you and makes it clear that he won’t hesitate to hurt them if they hurt you. Or flirt with you. I can see Suigetsu teasing him a lot for this since he didn’t knew Sasuke was such a softie which lead lead to a less present experience. Sasuke would honestly not know whether to hate him or Karin more who constantly talks down on you and might even insult you directly which doesn’t go well with Sasuke.
💙🍡Itachi’s overprotectiveness is in a sense inherited by him and mixed with his paranoia it makes a not very pretty mix. Sasuke is possessive and that is only fueled by the promise he made to Itachi. He has to be the one to protect you. He has to be the one to take care of you. He has to be the one in your life. On the other hand you’re also the only one who can understand him the best and are also the only one who’s allowed to lecture him a bit if he hurt himself. If we’re going with the theory that he knew you since his youngest days he would feel comforted to know that you never wanted to leave him and are now back for him.
💙🍡Additional thought: I think that after Itachi was brought back with Edo Tensei and he and Sasuke teamed up to defeat Kabuto, Sasuke told him about his new feelings for you. And I don’t see Itachi being angry, instead telling him that as long as you and him were happy he was happy as well. And I can also see Sasuke feeling for the first time a bit guilty for falling for his brother’s love. But in the end he would just feel more determined to keep his promise to his brother and protect you. Overall we can say that Itachi made your life with Sasuke a whole lot easier.

Hi you have a great understanding of Sasuke's character and awesome blog. Could I ask you for tips on how to write Sasuke right in fanfiction? When I try I never seem to get him right
Hello and thanks Anon. First of all, y’all don’t get offended if I’ll destroy some of your fave tropes in fics...I don’t judge ppl writing what they want in their fics, it’s their own fic so ofc they write what they want and how they want it and if they have fun with gay-uncle-Izuna, CEOItachi and sluttySasuke good for them...but when ppl impose their OOC Sasuke (or Nar or Itachi&co) as the real thing, and boy if they do....well. Nope.
Anyway I replied to similar asks here, here and here, so I’ll copy-paste some parts. My Sasuke tag. More Sasuke meta. More headcanons. More essays tag.
Sasuke is not dominant. He’s not bossy. He’s not assertive. He’s very passive in relationships and he values individual freedom, his own and other people’s. Ppl mistake his determination in pursuing his goals with assertiveness but it’s a totally different thing. He never makes the first move with ppl, unless he has a goal and he needs them, and even when he needs them, like Taka, he never imposes his will on them. He first freed them then he asked their help for his own goal, saying that he would accept if they refused. He never imposed himself on his brother (a child wanting his big brother’s attention is not being dominant, it’s natural) and he never did it on Nar or anyone else.
Sasuke is not selfish, he is the most selfless character in the whole series. He respected people, he didn’t see himself above them. He didn’t see himself as a genius or anything. He worked hard because he had a low self esteem, he was always compared to Itachi and he always lost. He was humble enough to ask others’ help, like asking N*ruto how S*kura was able to climb the tree with chakra in the beginning, or asking Team Taka’s help to find Itachi, asking Kakashi to make him stronger and following Orochimaru for more strength. And during all these, he was thrown in his face parts of the tragic truth about Itachi and his clan and he always had to get back on his feet and fight more. His world crumbled so many times on him and yet not only he reacted but he always was able to help those around him. Not with big words like N*ruto but really, freeing Orochimaru’s prisoners, Taka, and earlier protecting his team from Gaara, protecting N*ruto from Haku, and later proitecting N*ruto from Kaguya and then protecting the whole world from her, protecting Itachi’s ideal, his sacrifice from those who threatened to make it useless. He was ready to become the world’s only enemy to keep them together, following what he thought Itachi had taught him indirectly.
Sasuke is neither possessive nor jealous. He never showed any sign of possessiveness or jealousy towards anyone. He protected Taka and N*ruto. He defended Itachi’s name, unlike too many like to think: when he threatens Danzo to stop talking about Itachi it’s not because he’s jealous but because he doesn’t want that bastard to talk shit about his perfect brother, especially cause that bastard was the reason of his ruin. He was defending his name from an enemy and it was pure and selfless, not possessive at all! Proof of this is when Hashirama praises him instead, Sasuke is happy. He likes people to speak about his brother in a good way! When they were children Itachi always dismissed Sasuke who pouted but never got really angry or jealous at Shisui for example. And at the end of the fight vs Kabuto he aknowledged Itachi’s resolve to leave even tho it broke his heart to lose him again, and he let Itachi go with the saddest face but the utmost respect.
Sasuke is not arrogant. He has a low self-esteem. He was raised in the shadow of his genius brother, he suffered for his father not noticing him, he later developed an inferiority complex towards N*ruto as well because of his quick progress, compared to his own that he perceived as slower and not enough (that’s why he joined Orochimaru). When he brags it’s not because he’s the bragging type (aka N*ruto, Kiba &co) but it’s because he’s either making fun of N*ruto, since they were rivals/friends (not to mention it’s a shounen trope) and, even more so, because he is proud of his achievements. He worked so hard always and when he created a jutsu or smth he says it. Because he has low self esteem but he’s not socially awkward or shy or whatever (see later paragraph). So he is proud of his own results. (which is also a very TE thing, for those who care about mbti stuff).
Sasuke doesn’t value his life much. This is a result of his low self-esteem, which leads to poor sense of self-preservation (to prove that he’s strong, like when he was a genin and he trained so hard,and later to pursue his goals, for which he’d give his body to Orochimaru and his life over and over). Also he is so determined to achieve his goals that he’d do anything for them. He was ready to die on many occasions in canon for this and even later, after the ending, he’s seeing himself as a tool. Also, he never really got over the sense of worthlessness first caused by his father and then by Itachi’s words the night of the massacre. Not in a real life trauma-like thing, but as a way to see himself. this means that all those stereotypical rocking back and forth, cutting, whatever behaviors are not like him, who always got back to his feet and lived, although not for himself but for his goals.
Sasuke is not bitchy or spoiled. If he was he would have a great self esteem, and he clearly showed to have a very low self esteem instead. He never made anything about him actually, as all his goals were about others, his family, his brother, and so on. He was the one who did better teamwork in team7 actually, and he protected his friends and comrades, not to mention he freed Orochimaru’s prisoners and fought for the village and its people. How is this spoiled or bitchy, and btw, bitchy ppl do get offended and he never paid attention to offenses towards him, only towards his brother.
Sasuke is neither the haughty élite type nor the shy/socially anxious/‘emo’ type. He is neither Neji nor H*nata. He is aloof, he is always lost in his own thoughts and he doesn’t care about socializing because he wants to become strong, because he cared more about his family and goals, because he cared more about their opinion than the opinion of classmates. He valued strength since the beginning, being raised the way he was raised, so he valued the praise of strong people and not of the others, unlike those who seek praise from everyone. On the other hand his being aloof doesn’t mean he can’t have normal interactions, and the fact that he doesn’t use honorifics doesn’t mean he has socialization problems. Only that he doesn’t pay attention to these things anymore. He was always pragmatic, and after the massacre he became pragmatic to an extreme level, cutting off all unnecessary things, manners included. It doesn’t mean, though, that he doesn’t respect some people (=those he deems strong. Including Team Taka). He just shows it through actions.
Sasuke is not se/xually aggressive/dominant/whatever. He is too busy with his own goals to have se/xual or romantic thoughts (unlike other characters both male and female, not just Karin but also S*kura, Ino, and ofc N*ruto). I wouldn’t define this being asexual tho, because their universe is not ours and I’m sick&tired of all the real world/Nar universe parallels. He’s passive in relationship and on many occasions he showed indifference to se/xual anything, not disgust. Just, it wasn’t his thought. Because he is on a different wavelength. So even when he told characters to not be so close to him or smth, he didn’t move away, he just told them, which kinda proves my point once more of how passive he is towards ppl and relationships, he just lets them be. On the other hand, aceSas is better than hornydominantSas that is so OOC it hurts, be it with Itachi, Nar, S*kura or whatever other girls/boys.
Most MAIN characters didn’t understand/didn’t try to understand him. The ones who understood him more are unexpectedly not his friends. Not counting Taka ofc.
Sasuke is passive. He is the yin and N*ruto is the yang. In case this isn’t clear. It’s canon. Kishi used a yin/yang parallel for him and N*ruto, so while N*ruto is yang/sun/warm/ positive/active/male principle in nature/masculine, Sasuke is yin/moon/cold/negative/passive/passive/female principle in nature/feminine. Passive doesn’t mean weak. It means receptive, adaptable, flexible, which Sasuke is, since he’s the one who adapted his life and goals to new events, truths and changes, unlike most others who just kept going their own way no matter what (see N*ruto or Itachi). Many see him as assertive because he faces every situation in a very determined manner, taking actions and deciding everything independently. But being an independent thinker has nothing to do with being assertive or passive. I say he’s passive because he actually always reacts to what life (or Itachi) throws at him, every time. His reactions are quick and strategic, so it’s easy to miss this, but still, again, Itachi or N*ruto actively engage the environment and life, and influence other people, not Sasuke. He’s also passive with people, in relatioships. He never seeks anyone unless it’s for practical reasons, he only reacts to them approaching him. And he reacts in a very calm way, quite mild compared to how determined and detached he is, considering that a lot of characters invade his personal space or more, in the whole series. When he chases after Itachi it’s because he’s his younger brother and it’s natural for them, and mostly because Itachi set up his life so that he would focus on him, still it’s Itachi who is assertive, and he reacts in return. He makes a deal with Orochimaru, to obtain strength and give him his body in return. When he forms Team Taka, before asking their help, he first gives them freedom and only then he asks them to join him, making it clear that he won’t force them if they’ll refuse. He gives them something before asking something in return. This is not just a passive thing but something more because he is not selfish, like I said before.
Sasuke is an independent thinker. Unlike other smart thinkers like Itachi or Madara, to whom the story associated him, Sasuke was kept in the dark about many things, so he developed his own view of the world later, but when he did it was original and unique, just like his fighting style and strategy.
Sasuke is private about his thoughts and feelings but he’s also honest about them. Itachi is mysterious and not honest about his feelings, not him. He is aloof, it’s different. Just because he doesn’t trust many people and he’s lost in his own thoughts it doesn’t mean he is a shoujo mysterious character lol.
Sasuke is goal oriented. He does whatever it takes to achieve his goals. He would have given his body as a vessel for Orochimaru, not caring about what would happen to him, as long as he could have his revenge. He would have lived an eternity in solitude so that the world would have lived in peace. And, again, his goals are never about himself.
Sasuke wanted to die after he killed Itachi, but then when he woke up and was told the truth he had another purpose, and so he lived on.
Sasuke admires and respects strength but he’s not power thirsty. He wanted to become strong because he wanted to be worthy of Itachi and his father, than because he had to avenge his clan, then he had to avenge Itachi. It’s because he had low self-esteem and was selfless that he sought power. He wanted to be beside his father and brother, not to surpass them, actually. It’s Itachi who talked about surpassing.
Sasuke is very smart and logical, but he is easily manipulated with the right arguments. Like using Itachi, or appealing to his low self esteem, his feeling of worthlessness, his emotions. Because people who are logical are actually not emotionless. In fact they have a hard time controlling their emotions when they feel strongly, and this can be seen clearly every time Sasuke loses control. He becomes more impulsive than N*ruto who instead gets calmer, because he’s more in touch with his emotions (lol ofc he is, everything is always about his own emotions and feelings). Sasuke puts his feelings and emotions aside to reach his goals, he acts logically and pragmatically, he observes, makes plans, finds the better ways to do things, no matter how hard or dangerous for him they are. He has logical arguments even though they appear ‘crazy’ to other characters, and it’s sad to see how in the end he was belittled by N*ruto, as if his arguments were meaningless, they were not addressed at all, just deemed wrong, not with counterarguments but with illogical emotion based words that just made him feel unstable, as it happens when you have logical arguments and they tell you ‘you’re just depressed, you don’t get things right’.
In the end, he was tamed into submission. He was defeated, put in jail, isolated, guilt tripped and berated because of his ideals and goals, denied the justice he rightfully demanded.
All these can be observed directly. Others, more subtle things about him I wrote here, towards the end of this long post.

For Karin's backstory, do you usually go for anime one? I prefer datebook backstory, even though it's not detailed. Because manga showed one panel of Karin being experimented on with her arms showing bite marks. So I always believed that healing bites ability is result of Oro experiments. It makes more sense to me. Also, I am uncomfortable of anime backstory. And grass village confuses me. Didn't they still exist after the fourth war? I guess in fic, we could just say it no longer exists.
I love this question.
Okay, so the short version is that I usually do a mix of the two. I’m going to do a quick rundown on the differences between the two backstories for anyone who isn’t familiar. This means we’ll be touching on some very questionable subjects, because the anime went to some very concerning lengths. It’s going to be under a cut, because... yeah. Long.
The only solid canon, as in from the manga, that we have for pre-Orochimaru Karin is the Chuunin Exams flashback, wherein she is in a Kusa (Grass) headband, and is saved from a bear by Sasuke, which kicks off her crush on him.
The first backstory we received from Karin was in the databooks; this backstory came out prior to the Exams flashback in the manga. It stated that Karin was living in an unspecified village, sensed an army coming to destroy it, and tried to warn the rest of the town. Nobody believed her, so she ran to hide (I think in some nearby foothills/forest?), and everyone else was killed. Orochimaru then came by, tried to recruit her, and then let Sasuke convince her. Sasuke didn’t really have to do much beyond saying he was Oro’s student in order to get Karin to come along.
Now, given that Kusagakure still exists post-timeskip, at least in the Blood Prison movie, the village that was destroyed wasn’t Kusa. Either Karin was in a different village, or Karin’s backstory doesn’t include the village destruction element. I tend to go with ‘a different village,’ but I’ll get to that later.
The anime gives us a different backstory, one that takes Karin’s Kusa headband from the Exams as fact.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Karin’s backstory is not presented as a backstory, but rather an alternate timeline from her Eternal Tsukuyomi dream. I don’t know what the animators were thinking, deciding to use this hell as her dream of a ‘perfect world,’ but at this point the dream is treated as her default anime background so like??? Sure. Sure. We’ll use it, but we’ll also judge Studio Pierrot for it, because there’s “I don’t like this character” and then there’s “I’m going to have this character’s dream of a perfect world include over a decade of violating her health and bodily autonomy on a level of systemic abuse that is truly horrific, edging on fucking csa” because fuck you I guess? I’m still mad. I’d have been okay with the backstory as backstory because it fits her personality, but why the hell was it presented as her Eternal Tsukuyomi dream???
Listen LISTEN Eternal Tsukuyomi is supposed to be a perfect world for each individual You DREAM WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPIEST and they gave her a decade of physical and medical abuse, bordering on extended csa, only to die at sixteen because they'd 'used her up.’ like???

Anyway. Anime backstory:
Karin’s mother (unnamed) came to Kusagakure following the destruction of Uzushiogakure, and was granted refugee status in exchange for working at the hospital, having a similar ‘bite me and you’ll heal’ power as Karin does in canon. We don’t know who Karin’s father was; he may have been a Kusa citizen, or an Uzushio man who died prior to Karin’s mother’s arrival in Kusa.
Karin’s mother dies at some point during Karin’s childhood, having been used as a chakra healing battery to the point of dying of chakra exhaustion. At this point in the anime, Kusa orders that Karin must take over her mother’s duties as a healer, because such a technique is too useful to just leave alone. The bites start out on her forearms, eventually going all over her body, including areas that, despite the intent not being sexual in nature, do qualify as child sexual abuse.
She is bitten on the chest and thighs, by people she barely knows, with minimal consent on her part. She is a minor. This is csa and I hate that people forget this, or choose to exclude it to more easily vilify her.*
(Manga canon also has her with bites on her chest, at sixteen, most of which we can assume are not Sasuke since he seems to not know that biting her chest is provides better healing when she tells him to do it. Again: underage, coercion, chest bites, violation of bodily autonomy. It’s long-term csa in every canon. It may not be explicitly stated, but this is the most explicitly shown example canon has of this particular kind of trauma.)
Now, again, this is her Eternal Tsukuyomi (for some fucking reason), and not her technical backstory, and in that context she just... never gets out. She keeps getting used and abused, the bites eventually even covering her face, and then she dies before hitting twenty.
...so how do we reconcile this?
Elements we have:
Kusagakure headband during the Chuunin Exams (manga canon)
Saved by Sasuke, causing her crush; implies she was very poorly treated by the people around her prior to their meeting (manga canon)
No visible bite marks on her arms during the Chuunin Exams, but with the caveat that the marks are also not visible during Boruto, so it’s possible that Kishi, and in turn SP, just didn’t feel like drawing the scars. (manga canon)
Karin’s healing abilities were present at some point prior to Sasuke recruiting her to hunt down Itachi, but it’s unclear if it is a Kekkei Genkai or something nurtured by Otogakure. (manga canon)
Kabuto’s abilities during the Fourth War include Karin’s ‘rejuvenation’ and ‘life force,’ which implies that it may be a Kekkei Genkai but leaves it frustratingly ambiguous.
Experienced a village destruction, followed by Orochimaru taking her on, due to a Cassandra Truth incident, using Sasuke to convince her to join Oto (databook)
Her mother came to Kusa at some point post-Uzushio destruction; iirc Uzushio fell when Kushina was a teenager, so Karin’s mother either spent a decade or so wandering around prior to deciding Kusa was better than nothing (possibly when she got pregnant), or lived in Kusa for a period of time prior to becoming pregnant. (anime)
Karin was forced, via coercion, to use her healing abilities while in Kusagakure following her mother’s death (anime)
Kusa still exists post-timeskip (anime)
Here’s what I usually go with:
I do think Karin was a Kusa genin. The databook and anime both state that she joined Orochimaru after Sasuke, so she’d have no reason to wear the headband during the Exams other than actually being a genin of Kusagakure.
I err towards the biting being a Kekkei Genkai, which means that it fits with the anime’s suggestion of Kusagakure having used her as a chakra healing battery prior to her arrival in Oto. THIS IS OPTIONAL in other people’s readings, because it’s not manga canon and it’s obviously an incredibly hard subject to work with.
So, Kusa kid, dead mom, chakra healing battery, genin at the Chuunin Exams, then... Otogakure. In order to work in the databook’s element of the destroyed village, we either have to wipe Kusa off the map, or it’s another village.
I’ve generally gone with stating that Karin was on a long-term mission as a healer in a larger civilian village, or possibly the country’s capitol (though that’s less likely). Kusa was obviously willing to send her away temporarily, as with the Exams, so if the price was right, they’d probably send her out on out-of-village missions as well. Would she have a team? Maybe.
Given her poor treatment in this scenario, and the implied distrust/abuse of refugees in the anime, it’s possible that any teammates she had either didn’t trust her as a person, or didn’t think her skills were as good as she claimed. Possibly they assumed that they’d be able to fight off a smaller attacking force, and that Karin was exaggerating or mistaken when insisting that they evacuate. In any case, whoever was with her, if anyone was, also died in this attack.
The army was very likely sent by Orochimaru, and it’s plausible that Karin was actually the main target. I imagine that a spy would have gotten word to Oro about a redhead with extreme healing abilities, and Orochimaru going “Gotta catch ‘em all, Ooh! An Uzumaki!” and deciding that the healing abilities played well enough into the immortality plan to be worth sending an army (and then going in person, with Sasuke) for.
Given how canon played out, she was worth it.

* Okay the reason I harp on the CSA thing in particular: there was a significant period of time where two headcanons were prevalent: that Sasuke was sexually abused by Orochimaru in his time as Oro’s student, and that Karin was a wannabe rapist.
The Sasuke thing was based on a manga cover and one of the anime openings, but had no actual textual basis beyond Orochimaru being a queercoded villain, which is a whole different problem. The Karin thing was based on a fan’s mistranslation of a single panel, along with later arguments failing to take slang into account and often had by people who don’t actually speak Japanese.
Ultimately, I’m furious that a large portion of the fandom painted a canon CSA victim as a wannabe rapist while pushing that same backstory element onto a different character which they often put as her hypothetical victim, oftentimes just to get her out of the way for shipping purposes. This is a long-standing grudge.

Taka’s members’ bond with Sasuke. (For Taka team’s stans, this one’s for you.)
I don't think there's any point in introducing the Taka team again.
But as today's point is to prove the link as a point of complementarity with Sasuke. I'm going to take a look at the personal lives of each of them.
Ps: sorry for the typos, english is not my mother tongue.
SUIGETSU:
We are going to start with Suigetsu, like Sasuke, Suigetsu had a big brother, pretty strong and skilled because Mangetsu was the only one of the 7 swordsmen of the mist to master the 7 swords of Kiri. Suigetsu's dream was to become as strong as his big brother to enter the 7 swordsmen assassins club, whom he admired a lot, but Mangetsu died rather prematurely while protecting his little brother Suigetsu. Suigetsu trained hard to barely match half of his big brother's sword skills. He also comes from a known clan from the village of Kiri, the clan Hozūki, and owns a Kekkei Genkai, which allows him to liquefy his body from flesh to water. Pretty handy for a swordsman, isn't it? No blade can pierce his body. That's also why Orochimaru was interested in him and kept him prisoner in his laboratories for so many years. Doesn't that remind you of Sasuke? The story of the big brother to be surpassed in abilities, even though he was so admired by the little one? Sasuke had to kill Itachi because he had to avenge his clan, Suigetsu had to become much better than Mangetsu because he promised him before Mangetsu died, that he would take back the title of "Kijin no Sairai" - "the second coming of the demon" (as far as my translation is concerned), so he got it into his head to collect all the swords from Kiri village, in order to take back his brother's inheritance. It's rather cute when you think about it. Suigetsu, in spite of appearances, is not a deeply evil person even if he spent most of his life training to become an assassin. Of all the times he made fun of Karin for her feelings towards Sasuke and Karin hit him, he never twisted back once. Suigetsu doesn't have a family anymore, like Sasuke, he's the last survivor of his clan. Moreover, I wanted to add that Suigetsu, sometimes appears like a coward but is actually very competent, and he is certainly a better swordsman than Sasuke. At the same age, (at 16 years old) Suigetsu had already done 2 - D rank missions, 33 - C rank missions - 40 - B rank missions, 13 - A rank missions and finally 4 - S rank missions originally reserved for jônin, can he be considered as such?
KARIN:
What do we know about Karin?
At first, not much is said, except that she is a very competent sensory ninja, that Sasuke, with Suigetsu came personally to look for. He chose her, among many other competent ninjas. He acknowledged her as the best in her field. That's a canon fact.
Another true thing, Sasuke, who came personally to pick her up, confessed that he needed her to reach his goal.
"I need you, Karin", really happened.
He wasn't forced to do it, on the contrary, Suigetsu, who wasn't a big fan of Karin, spent his time dissuading Sasuke from going to pick her up and take her on the team, but Sasuke insisted.
They saved each other's lives several times. Karin healed him with her "Heal Bite" and he during their fight against Killer Bee, awakened a new power from his Mangekyō Sharingan: Kagutsuchi. He was able to extinguish the flames of the Amaterasu that had touched Karin. His face, scared of losing his teammate, proves how much Sasuke cares about his Taka teammates but especially about Karin. After I will not go on betting that he cares about her, romantically or just friendly because that's not the point and nothing in the manga proves that he did it romantically or kindly, I just want to emphasize this point: he was willing to die, and put Juugo's and Suigetsu's lives in danger in order to save Karin.
We learn a little more about Karin, during the Edotensei scene with Itachi and Sasuke against Kabuto. Kabuto then talks about Taka team members and reveals to Sasuke that Karin is indeed part of the Uzumaki clan, like Naruto, and that's why she has a huge chakra cluster. She regenerates quickly her own wounds but she can help others to regenerate and heal themselves by sharing her chakra, by biting her because it's the fastest way: in fact, the injured person drinks Karin's chakra and regenerates herself/himself in a few moments.
Besides the fact that Karin was used by Sasuke to locate Itachi through her powerful chakra and to warn him of his possible enemies, and of course to heal him in case he would be seriously wounded, she is not an exceptional ninja in combat, she must even very often be saved either by Sasuke or by Suigetsu. Sasuke knew that very well. He was never shocked that Karin might be a weight for them in their adventures. He chose her by himself, nobody forced Karin to be there and decided to protect her.
The scene where Sasuke "sacrifices" Karin to kill Danzō is totally a scene to be taken with extenuating circumstances. Sasuke finally being in front of the person who ruined his life, who ordered the massacre of the Uchiha clan, he couldn't do otherwise, he was forced by all means to kill him. Karin being in his field of action because she wanted to help him, was also pierced by Sasuke's chidori blade. Don't forget though, that he didn't really sacrifice her because she didn't die, since he didn't aim at Karin's vital points.
I still want to thank Sakura for helping Karin with her medical ninjutsu, she is still part of Karin's healing process, without Sakura's intervention, she might have had a hard time healing this time.
I also wanted to point out, on the scene following Karin's famous "sacrifice":
Karin thus finds herself on the ground, dying slowly, Obito then proposes to Sasuke to finish her off, properly because she knows too much about their plan. Sasuke doesn't even take the time to answer him. During this scene, Sasuke takes an exceptional time to load his chidori, giving Team 7 time to arrive on the scene, another proof that deep down he really didn't want to kill her. It is finally on Sakura that Sasuke decides to use his chidori, and not on Karin. Karin then dissuades him... but Sakura is really not far from being killed this time by Sasuke.
This scene is powerful, but it shows the total disinterest of Team 7 in the eyes of Sasuke, at least the disinterest he has in Sakura's life. Sakura being a burden, and considering her as the enemy, had to be eliminated as soon as possible. He was also never afraid to confront Kakashi. The only one for which he has doubts, a certain apprehension that he tries indirectly to hide, remains definitely for Naruto, but again, he does not hesitate to threaten him if Naruto still chases after him.
To finish with Karin, she is part of the Uzumaki clan, one of the oldest clans in the Shinobi world, and derived from the Senju clan, there are not many members of the clan left, at least to our knowledge except Karin, Naruto and Nagato. At the end of the war, only Karin and Naruto remain. She shares this fact with Sasuke. She also had lost her entire family during the previous war, her mother was used for medical purposes, literally having her chakra sucked until her death. She became an orphan at a very young age, left to live on her own, abused by others until she met Orochimaru. She has no one left.When she meets Sasuke, she falls in love with him for his beauty, he is pretty handsome, but as a sensory ninja, she found that he has a beautiful and attractive chakra, she realized right away that Sasuke is not as bad as he pretends to be. She took a close interest in him, and I think the interest was mutual.
JŪGO:
Jūgo, is certainly the only member where we are poorly with information about him.
Jūgo is a deeply kind and loving boy but is possessed by a heavy weight that overwhelms him: the cursed seal. He is the first holder of the cursed seal, it is with his DNA that Orochimaru started his experiments. The poor man, being unable to control his murderous impulses, preferred to die rather than to leave his cell when Sasuke, Suigetsu and Karin came to get him. Sasuke promised to hold him, Jūgo, usually not confident, agrees to come with them because Kimimaro had acknowledged Sasuke. Jūgo, in addition to his incredible physical strength when possessed by the cursed seal, is able to communicate with the birds. Sasuke uses Jūgo through this ability so that his birds can locate the Akatsukis' hideout and that he can create a map from the information transmitted by these birds. Also, Jūgo is an orphan, and since Kimimaro died, he was literally alone in the world. He has no known family, and his affiliation to a particular clan is unknown. Another peculiarity that Sasuke shares with his teammates.
I consider Jūgo as Sasuke/Suigetsu/Karin’s big brother. He took care of them. There also is a scene where he puts Sasuke in his futon after having treated him and bandaged him, because Sasuke had fallen asleep sitting, from exhaustion.
This boy is soooooo cute and gentle. His bipolar side contrasts enormously. His murderous personality with his soft and wise side.
Well, Sasuke's plan was perfect and well thought out.
To answer the question I was asked, "What do they do as Team Taka, besides help Sasuke enter into darkness?"
I, for one, don't hold Team Taka members responsible for Sasuke's entry into the darkness. Far from it. Sasuke was motivated by his hatred for killing Itachi, and after the final battle with his brother, motivated by revenge for those who led to his downfall. Don't get me wrong, I always feel that when it comes to Sasuke, the people who interact with him are responsible for his actions. No, Sasuke most certainly suffers from PTSD, living in unresolved grief since the death of his family, in hatred and constant pain, doesn't need anyone to think for him. He's an intelligent boy, he knows his purpose, he knows he would sacrifice himself to restore honor to those he has lost. His goal was just that. I sincerely think that deep down Sasuke wanted to change the Shinobi world, build new foundations, and achieve peace, so that what he experienced would never happen again, but it was a kind of pipe dream because he really thought he would die in his next confrontation with Naruto. He expected no less.
It really pisses me off that people think that Sasuke is acting according to the actions of others. I don't remember hearing Suigetsu, Karin or Jugo suggest a plan of action to kill someone or do something. He was the leader of this team. The others were acting on his behalf and not the other way around. He was the one who came to find them, he was the one who surrounded himself with these shinobis to help him achieve his goal. You let yourself be influenced by Naruto “talk no jutsu” in Gaiden who dares to tell the Taka team to mind their own business when he himself spent years to mind Sasuke's business, without even understanding the reason for his actions.
Gaiden makes the Taka team look like the villains who helped Sasuke carry out the actions of his hatred, but look closer, they did nothing so exceptional except help him find Itachi and obey Akatsuki's orders to attack Killer B.
It even seems to me that the Taka team were, in the end, the only ones who listened sincerely to Sasuke, to meet his expectations, to try to understand him.
A non-canon fact unfortunately, in a novel about Sasuke, after Itachi's death, Sasuke makes a kind of pilgrimage to learn more about his brother, during his Akatsuki period, and then meets two brothers, who were preparing drops for Itachi's eyes, and they make him think about him and Itachi when they were kids. ... I'm going to skip over the real story of this novel, although it's very well written for a non-canon novel, and we find Sasuke on his scene, by the sea, where he desperately lets go of all his pain in a torrent of tears, and decides to rename Hebi team into Taka team.
Karin, Suigetsu and Jugo were present during one of the worst moments of Sasuke's life: Itachi's death and thus the mourning of his older brother.
In spite of Itachi's terrible actions and choices to raise Sasuke's power, Sasuke still considers him as his beloved older brother who sacrificed himself for a village that never gave them the chance to live, properly...
Again, as I already said in another post, I truly think that all the people close to Sasuke tried to control his choices and his life, without asking his opinion.
Itachi made it clear that he tried to trace Sasuke's life from his childhood to what he became and finally disappointed to have failed... but what the hell did he expect?
Naruto, who absolutely wants Sasuke to go back to Konoha, but why? He knew very well that the people in Konoha would bully him for his actions, when he was already bullied enough to be an Uchiha in Konoha. So Naruto claims to know what's best for Sasuke. What?!
Sakura... is Sakura.
Kakashi and Jiraya tried to dissuade Sakura and Naruto from desperately pursuing a guy who clearly wanted to get the hell out of this village: Sasuke is not worth it.
Decidedly, Sasuke doesn't get much grace from people. Between those who think he's a sulky, who always makes moods because he has some problems in his life and those who judge him without knowing a second of his existence and his journey, he's really badly surrounded.
The Taka team is the only one that hasn't gone into the details and is following Sasuke, even before he decides to explain to them the reasons for this gathering.
I like their complicity. I like their dynamics. They help each other.
Team Taka is the one that Sasuke chose on his own, Team 7 is the one that was imposed on him. Don't forget that.

Uchiha Sasuke : My Thoughts
Since there is a lot of posts going around on Sasuke’s character analysis I figured it’s time I give my thoughts on Sasuke and what it means to me to be proud Sasuke fangirl.
This was my impression of Sasuke when I first met him. He was cool, silent, and powerful. I found Naruto being annoying, and very attention needy. Not that he didn’t deserve attention but it was just a turn off for me. I met Sasuke in the forest of Death. I was spending the night at my friend’s house and her older brother was watching it with his friends. She was playing maple story in the kitchen.
It wasn’t until I was in high school when I actually got to sit down and watch the Naruto anime. I actually own seasons 3-7 on poorly translated dvds in other words I own the whole garra arc all the way to the point where Sasuke leaves the village. Eventually I’ll get the properly translated dvds but at the time I was learning Japanese, fully fluent now, so this was good practice for me.
I always found Haruno Sakura annoying. She seemed very selfish to me and only cared about herself. It’s so bad that I’ve gotten to the point where I only refer to her as Haruno since the name Sakura is one of my favorites. My oldest daughter middle name is Sakura that’s how much I love it.
When Sasuke left the village I was heartbroken. At first I hated it. It took me years to accept why he did it. And honestly I actually stopped watching Naruto after Sasuke left the village because there was no more episodes with him in it. Now let’s fast forward to Shippuden.
This now asshole shows up in this outfit and I cannot. Like boi what are you thinking in those clothing. I hated this outfit and I hate the snake man, mostly because I can’t spell his name right no matter what. This outfit is not okay. But the character growth that he goes through in Shippuden really made me understand his character. Why he did what he did. How we found out why Itachi killed off the Uchiha Clan. Why Sasuke really wanted to kill his brother. There was so much heartbreak and my boy shows up in his Kirin outfit and I fangirled for days.
So when Sasuke went to kill Danzo I cried. I honestly cried as I binged these episodes. I cried because I knew why he was doing this. I knew why he was doing this. And I understood why this was happening. I hated Tobi for manipulating Sasuke but I do not disagree with Sasuke killing Danzo. I think that was well deserved.
Going back to Sasuke’s teammates. I’m very indifferent to them. Honestly they make no difference to me. That being said, I like Karen a lot more than I like Haruno. Despite Karen being a bit odd and sometimes annoying, at least she could hold her own. Despite her being captured she still stayed loyal to Sasuke and I love that, mean while at this point Haruno has already tried to kill Sasuke once which I think is the dumbest thing in the world and I honestly thought she couldn’t get more annoying. But she did so that wasn’t a surprise.
This is my favorite gif of Sasuke because it really shows just how broken and sad this boy was and every time I see it I just want to hug him and love him more and embrace him while he cries on me. This is the Sasuke that at night I would hug him while he sleeps in hopes he doesn’t get nightmares. I love this broken child and I will forever love him but let’s move on to the GNW. GNW arc, for me, this includes everything from Sasuke fighting with Itachi to when they kill the moon princess. Let’s break it down starting from the Itachi and Sasuke vs Kabuto fight.

These two together was something I didn’t know I needed and was so grateful to see happen. I hated that Itachi left after this fight. It broken my heart and it clearly broke Sasuke’s heart and my heart broke again for him. At this point my love for Sasuke was just something that was aged.
Sasuke showing up to the GNW is the next thing to talk about. Ugh this boy was too cool for me and that’s when I fell in love with him again. At this point Haruno shows up too and just...why. Like honestly why what is the point of her existence. Someone please slap her for me because she didn’t need to speak at all. But back to Sasuke. Let me say this with a grain of salt. I love Uchiha Sasuke. I love how he stayed focus to his goals. I love his character growth. I love what an asshole he can be. And I would do anything for him. THAT BEING SAID : Sasuke is not the type of person where I could be in a relationship with him. I love him don’t get me wrong. I would do anything for him but I could never date him. And that’s okay. I as a person I would not know how to handle him and I feel like I would hurt him as much as he has hurt my heart. I am not the right person for Sasuke but that doesn’t change how much I love him. I’ve seen this boy grow up and I’ve seen what a great person he has become. I will always love this child and nothing will change that. I think Kishimoto did Sasuke wrong in giving him a daughter. Sasuke would have been better with a Son. It’s like condemning him to deal with the fact that his clan will not continue. I am not a fan of Boruto. I have not watch much of it since I really only watched Naruto and Shippuden for Sasuke. I think there is nothing wrong with Sasuke losing his arm. I enjoy watching him continue to grow his fighting style and character growth with his new impairment.
Final Thoughts : I will always be a proud Sasuke fangirl. I will always love and adore him as Sasuke has taught me so much about love. He taught me that it’s okay to love someone and not be in a relationship with them. He has taught me that if you love someone you will always be on their side but you don’t have to agree with their choices or approve of them. He has taught me that love is endless and it can grow and it can mature and it can develop and it can change. Sasuke is always gonna be number one best boy for me since I’ve been in love with him since I was 12. Sasuke will always be number one best boy for me because of how much I went though and all the lessons I’ve learned because of him.

Let’s try again and hope that Tumblr won’t eat it away this time...
The most clear thing is that I find the ten years cooldown a total bullshit, alright? It just doesn’t make sense, why would it be there? There is no reason whatsoever
“But Mar!”, I can hear some of you saying, “Kotoamatsukami is so strong and over powered! It’s only fair that it has a cooldown time!”
Well, yes. But also, no
Kotoamatsukami is not the only strong and terrifying technique out there, and only talking about different the Mangekyō Sharingan we know so far we have a clear reason as to why that is bullshit
Let’s go from less terrifying to more terrifying:
Kamui, a technique that makes you intangible and basically invincible if you learn how to dip in and out the Kamui dimension at the right moment like Obito does. You can literally walk in a protected place without making any alarm sound. You can disappear and appear from thin air, teleporting from one place to the other in the blink of an eye. You could sto weapons in your personal dimension that no one can access. You could steal a nuke and no one would be able to take it back as long as you keep in inside the Kamui. And you can use it all day as many times as you want as long as you have enough chakra for it
Amaterasu, black flames that only the caster can extinguish. You could decide to burn the whole world down and you would be able to do it. You could start fires all over the place without anyone being able to put them out. You could incenerate your enemies with a single glance, meaning that it’s also very hard to kill you. You could also threaten everyone and have everything at the ready, because I honestly doubt anyone would ever want to die in flames, I don’t have any experience with it but it sounds pretty fucking painful, alright? And you can use it as much as you want as long as you have the chakra for it
Tsukuyomi, my second favorite Mangekyō technique (the first one being, of course, Kotoamatsukami). You can trap someone in an inescapable genjutsu that tortures them for 72 hours straight, and from the outside it looks like it lasted as long as the blink of an eye. Because of the heavy brain damage you can put someone in a life-long coma, unless you have a Sharingan strong enough to break out of the Tsukuyomi before the 72 hours have passed (like Sasuke does against Itachi) or you have someone like Tsunade around with enough skills to heal all the damage and wake you up. And Itachi can use it once a day (even if I’m convinced that he could have used it more times if he hadn’t been sick and dying)
And you’re gonna tell me that Kotoamatsukami deserves a ten years cooldown, but all the listed techniques above don’t? So I can damage someone’s brain once a day enough to put them in a life-long coma, but I can’t brainwash someone once a day? It’s still brain damage and it’s still fucking terrifying, alright? I would fist-fight God but I would never want to cross paths with a pissed off Uchiha unless I’m an Uchiha myself, and even then I would probably be one step away from pissing myself
I also have proofs that Kotoamatsukami doesn’t need ten years to recharge, and its from the novel
In this household we count the novel as canon! There! I said it!
Not everyone counts the novel as canon, but I do, both because it’s pretty cool and because it has the only version of Shisui’s death that doesn’t make me cringe as much as the other two (because, did you know? There are three different versions of the ShisuiVSDanzō fight! Yay...)
Anyway, in the novel Shisui gives us many info about Kotoamatsukami, one of which is its ability to put people under a basically unbreakable and undetectable genjutsu. This is also the reason why I’m fully convinced that Danzō was not able to use its full potential
Shisui’s words are these (straight from the novel):
“It puts the person trapped in the genjutsu into a state of total unawareness; then, you can make them fo what you want.”
Itachi understood that this was basically what visual jutsu was; whether or not the target was aware of what was happening was determined by the ninja applying the jutsu.
The ninja incited an awareness in the target that they were caught in a jutsu, leading the target to doubt everything, and get caught up in the jutsu. Or else the target unconsciously sank bit by bit into the jutsu, and by the time they realized what was going on, there was nothing they could do about it.
This Kotoamatsukami fell into the latter category, which wasn’t particularly uncommon for visual jutsu.
And then:
“For the visual jutsu of a normal Sharingan, your gaze has to intersect with the gaze of your intended target to some degree. You need that direct action, and the flow of chakra. But the Mangekyō Sharingan allows me to sidestep all that a bit. I just have to look at my target’s eyes, and I can pour my chakra in, even if our gazes aren’t intersecting. And the amount of chakra is several times more than with a normal Sharingan. So the target falls into the visual jutsu instantly. They have no idea anything has even happened.”
“So you mean by the time the enemy sees you, they’re already in the jutsu?”
“That’s exactly it.”
“And you’re going to use that on my father?”
Shisui nodded forcefully. “If I can just get him in Kotoamatsukami, I can make Lord Fugaku tell everyone that the coup is off. And I can make Fugaku himself believe from the bottom of his heart that it was his own idea.”
“You can write over the mind of the ringleader?”
“It’s only the fact that he’s your father that makes me hesitate.”
This bit right here is very important. Itachi doesn’t ask if Shisui can manipulate Fugaku, but if he can write over his mind, and that’s straight up brainwashing, not simply controlling
Also, when Kotoamatsukami is triggered by Itachi’s Sharingan, during the war, Kabuto says that not even Edo Tensei can control Itachi anymore
And then
Kotoamatsukami is strong enough to cancel Edo Tensei. Something not even Tobirama, the creator of the jutsu, had been able to do when Orochimaru had summoned him to fight against Hiruzen
Let’s notice also that Kabuto recognizes Shisui’s technique as soon as Itachi starts talking about it, meaning that he somehow heard about it somewhere
And yes, Kabuto was once in ROOT, but I highly doubt that Danzō would ever willingly talk about Kotoamatsukami with anyone, no, he would keep that secret tucked closely to his chest so that no one else can know about that power and wish to have it
Ao also recognizes Shisui’s eye, he sees his chakra in Danzō’s eyesocket and is able to add things up
Then tells everyone about it, also giving an explanation about Kotoamatsukami, even if he doesn’t know the name of the jutsu
(And look, I also found where is it that Ao says about Yagura’s genjutsu)
But how would Ao know about that? Personal headcanon about Ao/Shisui aside, there should be no way for him to know
Well, I think that Shisui has used Kotoamatsukami during his years as shinobi enough times for some people to know about it and link that ability right back to him
But, uhm, if Kotoamatsukami needs a decade to recharge, and he saves it to use it on Fugaku, how is that possible?
Well, it shouldn’t be in that case
However, we know for a fact, thanks to the novel, that Shisui uses Kotoamatsukami at least once before the night of the Uchiha clan meeting:
“There’s no way that sort of obvious genjutsu is going to work on me,” Mukai said, turning his face away from Itachi.
Before the man’s eyes was Itachi’s friend’s face.
“Mangekyō Sharingan,” Shisui murmured. The eyes of his friend, now crimson, took on a shape unlike any other Sharingan Itachi had ever seen.
Normally, the Sharingan had a small black dot in the center of the eye, and in the circle around that, the snake tails of the magatama-shaped specks popped up. The power differed depending on the number of magatamas, but the form itself was common in the entire clan.
But Shisui’s was different.
The three commas of the magatama were enlarged and connected, and the small black dot in the center had disappeared, leaving a crimson hollow. If the ratio of red to black in a normal Sharingan was eight to two, then Shisui’s eyes at the moment appeared to be a fifty-fifty struggle for supremacy.
Most likely, the intersection of gazes of Shisui and Mukai had lasted less than a thousandth of a second. For a normal Sharingan, the used couldn’t be certain of capturing his opponent in a moment that short.
Shisui had not missed that fleeting instant.
Mukai had definitely been ensnared in the genjutsu.
“Mukai!” Shisui shouted, dumbfounded, the hand around his throat releasing him at last. Before his eyes, Mukai fell, a spray of blood shooting from his stomach.
Itachi stared, rooted to the spot.
Mukai had cut his own stomach. The instant Shisui’s Sharingan had been activated, Mukai had stiffened slightly, and pulled a kunai from his pocket to slash a cross into his own belly.
“Hold on, Mukai!” Shisui shouted, crouching down to cradle the ninja’s head.
“I’m a spy for another village. Any interference with my brain, and a jutsu that makes me end my own life is executed. You can’t save me.” Mukai coughed, and blood spilled out of his mouth. “I-I’ve never seen anyone caught in a genjutsu in that shot time before... What the hell was that?”
Shisui didn’t answer.
“Uchiha secret jutsu, huh?”
Shisui uses Kotoamatsukami on Mukai, supposedly to convince him to both let him go (he was keeping Shisui from the throat) and to tell them the truth about his spying work
But how would that be possible? Shisui uses Kotoamatsukami ere, and then not too long after he wants to use it on Fugaku? Because I honestly doubt ten years passes between this moment and the ShisuiVSDanzō fight
It simply doesn’t make sense, just like the fact that Danzō can use Kotoamatsukami once a day thanks to Hashirama’s cells
Danzō can’t even use Kotoamatsukami’s full power, because when he uses it on Mifune the genjutsu seemingly breaks away as soon as Ao points it out. Mifune understands that he’s being controlled, and apparently snaps out of it
Out of a genjutsu that can cancel Edo Tensei
Shisui would never rely on such fickle technique to stop a coup, because it would take a single person voicing their doubt about Fugaku’s behavior and he could snap out of it
Itachi is also completely convinced that Kotoamatsukami is strong enough to completely change Sasuke’s mind about wanting to destroy Konoha, so... Things don’t really add up here
And he also says about Kotoamatsukami needing a decade to be used again, but why does he says that? He repeats it again shortly after
And yet Itachi knows that’s not true. He was there when Shisui used his Mangekyō on Mukai, and he was there when Shisui told him about his plan of using Kotoamatsukami on Fugaku
But Itachi also doesn’t personally know how that power really works, he doesn’t have it in his own eyesocket and he only knows what Shisui once told him about it
And even if he did have it, it would be just like Kakashi and Kamui. Kakashi later learns what Obito’s Mangekyō can do, but he’s never able to use it full power like Obito does. We never see Kakashi using the Kamui to avoid hits like Obito does, both because it would probably take too much chakra and because that Sharingan is not his, so no matter how much he trains, he would never be able to use it full potential and the only time we see him using it like they’re his own is when Obito gives him both eyes for a short period of time against Kaguya, but no more than that
I think that Kotoamatsukami is a very expensive technique, in terms of chakra usage. It needs a certain amount to work properly, and the less amount you pour into it the weaker it is
Danzō cam use it once a day because Shisui’s Mangekyō feeds off of Hashirama’s cells, giving it enough power to be used once a day but as a weaker technique instead of full-on brainwashing (in fact, Mifune snaps out of it as soon as it comes out that he was being controlled)
While Itachi uses its full power because it had had a full decade to build up the chakra needed to be used correctly
This right here means that Itachi wasn’t able to use Kotoamatsukami on Sasuke before, because the Mangekyō was still unable to be used properly
But if the moment of the war is when Kotoamatsukami can be used again... When Naruto and Sasuke are 16... Ten years before... When Sasuke was 6...
Yes, I’m about to say what you might be thinking: I’m fully convinced that Itachi used Kotoamatsukami on 6 y/o Sasuke after the massacre, probably to reinforce the hatred and make sure that Sasuke won’s tray from the path of vengeance Itachi just put him on
That would also explain why every attempt of making Sasuke see the truth and change his mind never worked, because Kotoamatsukami is unbreakable
However, I do believe that the fact of the ten years has some truth, but not as everyone seems to think
As I said before, I’m fully convinced that Kotoamatsukami needs a ton of chakra to work correctly, meaning that Shisui does indeed need some time to build up enough of it to use it without accidentally kill himself of total chakra depletion
But then, why does Itachi say that? Simple, because the eye is in a crow
When Shisui takes his left eye out and gives it to the crow, the crow disappears, meaning that it was probably a summon, likely Shisui’s main one
Summons are different from humans, and they don’t have the same chakra networks. A summon as big as Manda, Gamabunta or the likes can probably use as much and even more chakra than a human, but one as bit as a regular crow? That little body’s not made to have much chakra stored in it, is it?
What I mean is, Kotoamatsukami is feeding off of the crow’s very limited chakra reserves, so it takes longer for it to build up the required amount for the technique to be used, hence why it needs ten years to properly work again
Shisui probably wasn’t able to use it once a day, but maybe once a week if he’s well-rested and with enough chakra to use it
Besides, if he needed to wait ten years to use it again then why use it at all? How would he know if he needs it for something more important in the future?What if he had already used, say, five years before the Uchiha meeting night? Oops. I need to stop the coup but I can’t for another five years. What a shame
That’s simply bullshit, it doesn’t make any sense at all
I think Itachi knows about the ten years because, after using Kotoamatsukami on Sasuke, he started keeping a close eye on the crow, waiting for when the Mangekyō pattern would appear again, and when it happens he shoves that same crow down Naruto’s throat with the order to activate and react to Itachi’s eyes with the order to protect Konoha
People think that not much is known about Kotoamatsukami, but in truth the technique is plenty explained between manga and novel
Everyone simply take Itachi’s words like the ultimate truth without considering all the pieces that make the bigger picture. Even the fact that Shisui doesn’t need to make direct eye-contact but simply look at his enemy without his enemy looking back at him in the eyes, that’s often ignored and left out
Kotoamatsukami is a very complex technique, probably the most complicated Mangekyō jutsu known to this day, because there are many factors to take in that people don’t count when they talk or write about it
And yes, everyone can look at Kotoamatsukami and give their very own interpretation, but there are also some factors that should not be ignored
That’s also why Kotoamatsukami is my favorite Mangekyō technique, and why the ten years thing is total bullshit
And I think I’m finally done! This came out way longer than expected, and I almost want to thank Tumblr for destroying the first post I wrote yesterday night, because this second post is even longer and it has more things in ti XD

An analysis of Itachi’s finger tap
Decided to do this before Itachi's birthday because I don't think anyone, would appreciate an in-depth look at how much of a terrible person you are, on your birthday even if he is fictional.
In Naruto, the finger tap is used as a way to show the bond of siblings. At least that is what the show wants to convey; however, when looking in-depth, it is in actuality quite the opposite.
Itachi "hide everything and run away," Uchiha
The finger tap in origin starts with Itachi, a man who is known for the death of his entire clan, so we are certainly off to a great start. Itachi was since childhood was a prodigy and held Hokage level wisdom, thinking of life and death and what peace means. Thoughts he could not reveal to simply anyone (except Shisui), and with being apart of the Anbu, there was already so much he had to keep secret. However, Sasuke always wanted to play with Itachi and to train with him, and when Itachi had to say no without telling him the truth. He tapped his forehead and ran off, this perpetual finger tapping only ever happened when Itachi had somewhere to be, something to hide, and so on.
The reason Itachi keeps Sasuke in the dark is to protect his innocence, which leads me to something that needs to be said. Itachi is an arrogant prick. Please let me explain my process, Itachi ever since he was a kid was told he was a prodigy because well he was one. He graduated early from the academy after learning the shadow clone jutsu and later became an Anbu black ops captain. Combined with the gift of Hokage level wisdom, he must have at some point, or another realized he knew better than a lot of the adults around him. Heck, he pretty much surpassed his father in every way except securing a bloodline.
Furthermore, after the Uchiha massacre in which he had just killed off his entire clan and left his brother traumatized for life. He must have been feeling pretty distraught, for if he was genuinely okay about the whole thing; despite the fact he had to kill children, innocent people, and his family. Then maybe he did pretend to care about Sasuke after all. So in the spirit of Itachi's upcoming birthday, and as a little birthday gift from me to Itachi. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was hurting on the inside, like any respectable edge boy of his clan. Cool? Cool.
With the realization that he just killed his family, left his brother to hate him, and banished himself from the village. He chose a path; I felt was rash and poorly executed on Itachi's part. I mean he had no one to help him, and genius or not, in the end, he was only thirteen. He most likely lacked the mental stability and experience; an adult would have had. Moreover, because of this, I believe he chose what made the most sense at the time. So to say everything he did was for the best interests of the village and Sasuke is to follow Itachi's skewed line of logic, he seemed to have made after he mentally checked out, post-massacre.
"I am damaged, badly damaged."
Every time Itachi finger taps Sasuke, it is always to tell him, he has more important to do. Something more important than his family, and from giving Sasuke "missions," to merely saying sorry Itachi always had something better to do. For every time he has something better to do, he taps Sasuke on the forehead with an apology. This brings me to my case and point; the finger tap is not to say how much he loves him; it is to say sorry for always putting something above his brother. It is sorry for not being the brother Sasuke wanted Itachi to be.
Moreover, in there final battle, in which Itachi dies, he taps Sasuke's forehead one last time, he apologies one last time. However, it leaves Sasuke torn up because by doing this it leaves Sasuke to see Itachi for who he was. Since if he were genuinely heartless, he would not have said "sorry" in the first place. This big final battle for Sasuke feels hollow by the end because revenge is the sweet dish with a bitter aftertaste.
After Itachi is reanimated, Sasuke confronts Itachi ranting to him about all that he has done to him, and it is then Itachi realizes how much of a criminal Sasuke became. That he was indeed wrong since there was no honour in the path hatred, so Sasuke, in turn, did not have honour either. After a fight against Kabuto, the reanimation jutsu is wearing off, leaving Itachi to vanish from this world into the afterlife.
So when realizing this, Itachi goes to Sasuke with his fingers out, it looks exactly like the end of their last battle when they fought each other. However, instead of going to tap Sasuke on the forehead, he goes and clinks his forehead against Sasuke's forehead and says this:
"You don't ever have to forgive me. And whatever you do from here on out, know this, no matter what I will love you always."
Itachi did not tap Sasuke's forehead because, for the first time, he was not asking for Sasuke's forgiveness, to say yet another apology for all the things he had done. He simply wanted to tell his brother that he loved him no matter what, and this is what I believe gave Sasuke some closure. Killing Itachi felt hollow, dealing with the guilt of killing his brother even worse. Nevertheless, to know that for once it did not matter, Sasuke was not forced to forgive Itachi, and he was not forced to hate him either, that is what gave Sasuke his closure.
Conclusion
Itachi's love for Sasuke is toxic as it is loving because in many ways, Itachi acts out of what he thinks is right and no one is right all the time, not even someone with Hokage level wisdom. Moreover, in many ways, because of this quiet arrogance Itachi held, he is blind to the flaws in his "plan." Going as far as to convince himself, this was the only option, even if there were better options. Itachi only realizes his flawed logic after he was reanimated. Which left in its wake Sasuke, an innocent little boy turned by hatred into a hardened war criminal and terrorist.

more in-progress naruto thoughts under the cut!
i’ve only progressed by like ten episodes but we just got out of the filler and back into the real story, which means that i feel like i’m moving at a million miles per hour because we went from Nothing happening to Everything Happening All At Once
[spoiler policy disclaimer first, as always: I am watching naruto for the first time and i am trying to avoid spoilers, so please don’t interact with this (tags included, because the notifications now show them to me automatically) with any spoilery commentary, including even general things like “oh i love this show but it gets less good after X point” or “X season is better than Y season” or any general assessments of quality/likability/etc re: future seasons. - real!madara has finally made his appearance (and the scene where he appeared was Epic. i love when they introduce new music). i wasn’t surprised to see him; i’ve suspected for a while that fake!madara isn’t who he says he is (specifically, i’ve been guessing that he’s madara’s brother, but the story hasn’t confirmed that, so who knows; i could be wrong). anyway the five kage are lining up to fight him, but we haven’t seen any of the battle; it cut away to naruto’s part of the story and we haven’t gotten back to gaara’s group yet...i think we’ll get into that tonight.
- the tailed beasts part of the story has taken a huge leap forward and i LOVEEEEE it; once again i am SUCH a sucker for the whole “compassion for your enemy/turning your enemies into friends” motif and ughhhhhhhhh it’s fantastic; THIS is the stuff that i love watching naruto do. this is what he’s built for. “just who the hell are you to say that having a tailed beast makes me feel despair” + kurama opening his eyes open hearing that - i LOVED that shot. and i loved the show turning things around and showing things from the perspective of someone who’s been locked in a cage for so long...and the parallel they drew between iruka saying “he’s not a beast; he’s a leaf shinobi and his name is naruto” + naruto releasing kurama from his cage and recognizing him by his name.......MASTERFUL
and oh my god they showed us the BABY tailed beasts wtf i was definitely not ready for this face:

fake!madara also once said something very brief about “linking sasuke to the gedo statue”.........what. what was that about.
what did naruto see when he and sasuke had that brief encounter. sakura knows he’s hiding something. what was it?
a million years ago jiraiya was talking about the first hokage’s necklace and said “there are only two like it in the world.” naruto’s is broken...so who has the other one?
how did itachi know about fake!madara in the first place? back when fake!madara was telling sasuke about everything that happened, he was like “itachi was the only one who knew of my existence/he agreed to help me if i promised to leave the hidden leaf alone” - but how did itachi even know about fake!madara at all?
shisui uchiha...what the fuck happened to make him think he needed to kill himself and hide his eyes
how the fuck did danzo end up in cahoots with orochimaru??? and did danzo use shisui’s eye for anything while he possessed it (besides trying to influence the people at the five kage summit)???
i’m still not clear on the parameters of all the visual jutsu. why do sasuke’s new eyes look the way they do, if they’re itachi’s??? itachi’s were always a kind of three-spoked pinwheel, but now that they’ve been transplanted into sasuke they look completely different - why? i don’t even fully understand what the mangekyo is - when it was first introduced i thought it was the thing kakashi could do, but we’ve never seen anybody else use it that way (unless that’s actually what fake!madara is doing when he sucks people into him...) - itachi can use it for tsukuyomi and amaterasu and the susano’o because he has it in both eyes, but is that the extent of it? what are its capabilities actually??? and what was kabuto talking about when he said the rinnegan was a natural progression of the sharingan?
what is written on the uchiha stone tablet? is it information about how the sharingan can be used to control tailed beasts? or something else?
how did taka end up under orochimaru’s control? like - didn’t we once see a flashback of karin participating in the chunin exams at the same time as sasuke? what the hell happened to her??? how did she end up with orochimaru?????
what was going on in that brief flashback with madara and the tsuchikage? the one where young ohnoki is like “that wasn’t the agreement” and madara is like “there is no alliance; you bow to the hidden leaf; also don’t ever mention hashirama’s name in front of me again”? what is the CONTEXT
what exactly do madara and fake!madara get out of the infinite tsukuyomi? like...okay, so everyone’s a zombie living in a fantasy world, and what will YOU be doing, exactly? i’m just not sure i understand their ultimate motivation.
so many questions about this whole “six paths” thing; i don’t even understand what that is right now or why the sage of the six paths created the ten-tails to begin with or...or anything about it. fake!madara told konan a bunch of info about shadow style and creation powers but it all went way over my head and i don’t feel like i have any clarity on it yet.
this isn’t plot-related at all, but i still don’t even know what happened to rin. i’ve known she was dead for like 700 episodes but i have absolutely no clue how what happened. honestly this show is as tight-lipped about kakashi’s personal information as he himself is; they give us the tiniest bites of information and then just let us stew for years...they never told us what happened to his mom, even. they told us kakashi was a chunin at age SIX and just like...didn’t think that warranted further discussion. they mentioned he was a former anbu operative and then never mentioned it again (though i do know that’s coming...it’s been several hundred episodes, so i CAN’T WAIT)
i probably have a billion more questions that i just can’t recall at the moment because there are too many of them to keep in my head at the same time. i am sure many of these will be answered to one degree or another as i move forward, but right now i am just like “boy, time is ticking, and we have so much left to address...how???”

Approaching Sun (26)
Author’s Note: Happy New Years! I realize that it has been a LONG time since I have updated this story. The school year has been an absolute killer. Not to mention that I am also working on my master’s degree and taking a ton of classes this summer.
In regards to this chapter, I ended up running out of time and decided to cut it in half due to the coherency of the story and the length. I wanted to give Satou and Isao a bit of a wrap up that does the story justice. However, the good news is that the second half will take less time to be posted. I will definitely be trying to work on this story because I have a LOT planned for it and it’s only just getting to the good parts (one coming up next chapter.) For my patient readers, this will be good news to you. For those who aren’t patient, hoping you’ll stick around to read J
Also, next to Naruto, reading and writing are my passions and my New Year’s resolution is to encourage more people to read. Chapter 26: Monsters
There was a sharp mix of pungent smells permeating the air around them as Sasuke looked over Sakura’s shoulder at a particular herbalist book. His friend was sitting at a table in the center of the greenhouse, flipping through the Sunagakure plant log, scratching down a list of all the ingredients she would need to create the military ration pills.
When Sasuke commented on the smell, Sakura replied with “You get used to it.” And then she went into a detailed explanation of why plants even created all sorts of different smells--why many flowers had sweet aromas, but other plants had fouler scents. Sakura elaborated that it all had something to do with procreation. Something about bugs being attracted to them in order to spread pollination. She even went into the genetic purposes of tastes in plants. Sasuke listened with genuine interest at the wide variety of facts that she possessed.
Sasuke turned and leaned against the table as she spoke, tucking in his chin to his chest and closing his eyes. When he was sure she was distracted, Sasuke peeked at her between the lashes of his right eye. He noticed that her brow was furrowed as she searched for the plant she had written down. After a few minutes of this, she began to tap the end of the pen against her bottom lip, a subconscious behavior many people did while thinking. Sasuke couldn’t help but realize that he hadn’t paid much attention to anyone’s small habitual behaviors in the past few years except for in battle scenarios. To watch the cogs spinning in Sakura’s mind, had Sasuke feeling like he had missed out on much in the last several years.
After another few seconds, Sakura explained her concern: “I’m going to have to find a substitute plant for the medicinal aspects of the pills. Sunagakure doesn’t grow Tikasia in abundance here. The amount that I would need would deplete their entire reserve.”
Sasuke considered her word for a few seconds before his eyes narrowed a fraction when the door of the greenhouse opened. A white-coated man with sandy colored hair beamed hugely and raised his hand in greeting as he entered. “There you are, Sakura-san. I’ve been looking for you!”
Sakura broke from her deep concentration and turned from the table as she picked up on the calling. Sasuke raised his eyebrows slightly at the familiar tone the young man used. This must be a staff member from the hospital, a colleague that was working closely with Sakura while she was here. His presumption was confirmed when Sakura returned both the smile and call.
“Sorry Mako! Hope you haven’t been looking for too long.”
Mako?What-- are they on a first name basis or something? Sasuke pondered with a frown of disapproval.Sakura barely knew him, or at least, that’s what Sasuke thought. At least Makohad the decency to add the proper honorific to her name. Not that Sasuke could be the one to lecture on the topic.
The young physician made his way over to them and immediately offered a respectful bow to the both of them. Sasuke was never very good at returning these customs of respect, but after a minute of awkward staring, the Uchiha nodded his acknowledgement in a very uncaring sort of way. After bowing, the medic immediately turned to Sakura and glanced at her work on the table.
“Are you creating another medicine?” Mako asked, crossing his hands behind him in consideration, boldly reading the list she had compiled next to the herbal catalog.
Seeing her co-medic’s interest, Sakura picked it up and handed it to him while simultaneously pushing the book in his direction, an invitation for his opinion.
“You’re just the person I need right now actually.” She explained to Mako how she was creating a batch of military ration pills, a notion at which the male medic’s facial expression turned to one of surprise. Sasuke understood his disbelief; not many people knew how to make such a desired sustenance that tipped the scale in favor of those who consumed it in battle. When bringing up the topic of the ingredients she needed, he raised his thumb and forefinger to his chin, pinching it in contemplation.
Sasuke stiffened slightly when the young man pulled up a seat to sit beside her, pulling the book closer so they could both look at it together. “What about Ashuwa?” he offered, flipping to a plant towards the front of the book. Sasuke peeked over towards the illustration and noticed a shrubby little plant with bright yellow flowers.
“Ashuwa?” Sakura questioned, frowning down at the picture. “That belongs to the nightshade family, doesn’t it?”
“Yes,” he informed, “but it’s not fatal like many of its other relatives. It’s actually quite safe to consume unless the patient has some sort of allergic reaction to it.”
“That’s interesting. I’m not very familiar with it. What are its properties?”
“It’s a little stronger than Tikasia but more acclimated to our desert climate, so we have plenty of it here. Its primary effect is a boost in brain function. However, we have observed an increase in energy and muscle mass along with it. Some ninja even claim that after consuming it, it relieves them of stress.”
“All that?” Sakura pondered, dropping her jaw.
Sasuke raised an inquisitive brow as well. With benefits like that, it was a wonder they didn’t add it to every meal here. There had to be missing information obviously…
Sakura must have been thinking the same thing Sasuke had, because she immediately responded with. “What are the negative effects?”
Mako smiled at her insight. “Just like Tikasia, you crash and suffer chakra depletion as a result. You have to take far less of it than Tikasia. Like I said earlier, many people have severe allergic reactions to the plant which is why we don’t use it often.”
Sasuke couldn’t help but frown at the pair of doctors who discussed plants so casually with one another. Mako had a sort of charisma about him, and Sasuke could tell why Sakura would rely on him while she was here. The young man’s temperament sort of reminded Sasuke of their old schoolteacher, Iruka-sensei. However, Mako’s knowledge was so thorough that he almost reminded Sasuke of Kabuto; Sasuke had witnessed many in-depth medical conversations between Orochimaru and he.
Still leaning against the table, Sasuke closed his eyes, adopting an uninterested guise to go with the frown. Seeing them together, discussing their common interests, reminded Sasuke of something despite his epiphany last night. Watching her familiarity with this person reminded Sasuke that just because he had finally admitted to himself that loved her, didn’t mean that he should do anything about it. Sakura had told him firmly that she would only ever choose him and to not assume that if he left her alone, she would fall in love with someone else. Sasuke truly believed his female teammate about this. But seeing her cheerfully interact with Mako made Sasuke want to believe otherwise. Even though it stung him to think about Sakura loving someone else and another man being a part of her daily life, waking up beside her and hearing a confession from her lips, Sasuke knew it was what she deserved. He could never be that sort of man for her, especially not in the near future.
But now that Sasuke was certain of his feelings, would he be able to only ever be a close friend to her? Would he be able to watch someone else come into her life and become the person Sakura swooned over and built a family with? He would, Sasuke told himself. He hadto. Sasuke had already chosen in his heart to be the Itachi of this time and make the sacrifice for the greater good so that his loved ones like Sakura even had a future. He had to keep reminding himself of this.
Without meaning to, he let a low exhale of self-defeat escape his mouth. Realizing he had done so, Sasuke quickly glanced to his right to make sure no one noticed. Sakura, who Sasuke now noticed had stopped what she was doing, was now watching him despite the fact that Mako was still flipping through the book and explaining something to her.
His kunoichi teammate locked gazes with him, furrowed her eyebrows, and tilted her head in silent question. Sasuke broke their eye-contact immediately and Sakura returned her attention to Mako. It’s for the best, he thought to her.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Mako lead Sakura across the greenhouse to the white-labeled bushel of Ashu that he had spoken to her about. She measured out the amount she would need and began cutting it carefully with his assistance. Sakura had been surprised at this substitute that Mako had offered with certainty at its effectiveness. She pinched a sizable piece of it and placed it on her tongue and began to chew. With it being a nightshade after all, she wanted to be certain that it wasn’t toxic. Nightshades were highly cultivated by humans and most were safe to consume like Mako said, but since she had never heard of this plant and it was unfamiliar to her, she wanted to double-check Mako’s claim. Besides, he said it could cause allergic reactions.
Just so Mako’s feelings wouldn’t be hurt by her taste-testing, Sakura simply announced, “This actually tastes quite yummy. Much better than the bitter Tikasia.” Then she called out loud enough for Sasuke—who had been casually leaning against the table since their arrival—to hear, “You’re in luck, Sasuke. Maybe these pills won’t taste like ‘mudballs’ this time like Sai famously calls them.”
Sasuke peeked open his right eye at her, clearly not grasping a word of what she was referencing. Mako, on the other hand, laughed at her statement.
“Tikasia israther bitter. Is Sai a friend back home? Your friend really called them ‘mudballs’ to your face?” Mako laughed.
Sakura chuckled to herself a bit, returning her full attention to Mako. “Sai is a sort of special friend. He’s brutally honest; always has been.”
“Sometimes we need friends like that,” Mako said reassuringly, helping her pluck the stems and flowers of the plant and wrapping it up in paper.
Sakura nodded in agreement and instantly recalled many of her friends back home and a sort of homesickness radiated in her chest at the thought of them. She wondered how all of them were doing. She also thought of the hospital and Lady Tsunade in that moment too, and made a mental note to write a letter to check in on them.
She glanced up at Sasuke for the twentieth time that day, and her homesickness disappeared. When he was absent, she was always sick with longing for him. It suddenly surprised Sakura that she had never felt more at home than when she was with this man. She had confessed this to him before, but when he was gone, it felt as if she was alone. Sakura would fall asleep with thoughts of him and miss him just as much the following morning. That feeling had disappeared on her journey and this was the first time the kunoichi had missed someone else since she had picked up her bag and followed Sasuke down the cobbled street that night a few weeks ago.
Mako’s statement returned her to the present moment from her thoughts. “Isao slept well last night. After you left with Gaara, he was distraught and restless after what happened. We ended up giving him your dosage of the sleeping medicine and he didn’t experience any sleep terrors.”
“That’s terrific!” she exclaimed, almost jumping for joy in her excitement. This was exciting news. If they could eliminate the terrors, then Isao would be okay. Maybe he could stop taking the medicine once his body adjusted.
“Satou, his father, however,” Mako began as they made their way back towards the center table towards Sasuke. “Well—he’s a bit hysterical in the hospital. The man definitely needs to be there, but we are not quite sure what to do for him. He’s actually the reason I came looking for you. I figure you might be the only one able to talk to him.”
Sakura nodded as they came to a stop and she set her items down. “I see.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sasuke had been thoroughly pissed when Sakura had announced to him her plans and handed him the bundle of paper-wrapped yellow flowers. “Will you grind these up for me while I quickly check-in on a patient? They should be dry enough on their own. We need to mix this in with the rest of our batch as soon as possible.”
The Uchiha nodded with a “hm” but had half a mind to shove the flowers and grinder toward Mako since he was inclined to be so damn helpful.
Apparently, she was duty-bound to go see some hospital patient with an attitude problem and Sasuke had guessed easily who it was. After seeing the bruises on her chest last night, it was hard not to think about this patient of hers. It settled like a knife between Sasuke’s shoulder blades as he began to pulverize the flowers in the mortar with the stone pestle. He glowered after the two medics as the door to the greenhouse swung to a shut behind them.
Sasuke knew that Sakura was aware of his eagerness to get the pills so he could return to his mission. And because she predicted this, Sasuke knew without a doubt that Sakura had played him. She had given him this little job to keep him occupied for a few minutes because he couldn’t put the task off. But what shedidn’t know was that it certainly wouldn’t take him as long as she hoped. Sasuke removed another heap of flowers from the paper and began to smash them forcefully.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sakura had managed to come up with a small plan in the few seconds after Mako had informed her about Satou, Isao’s hysterical father, whom Sakura and Gaara had placed under the care of the hospital yesterday. The first and most necessary part of her plan was to keep Sasuke busy and away from her patient. After seeing her teammate’s reaction to the small bruises on her chest last night, she didn’t want the two ninja to have the least bit of interaction.
The second part was to ensure that Isao was kept far, faraway from his father. If the child was showing any progress at all after having distance from him, then Sakura would be damned if Satou meant to screw that up. Trailing closely behind her, Mako confirmed her hope that Isao remained at the mental health children’s clinic and was being strictly supervised.
Finally, the last rocky bit of her plan was to try her best to remain calm and civil with Satou despite what she predicted his treatment of her would be. Sakura anticipated every bit of an angry temper and possibly aggression.
Having Mako with her made Sakura feel more reassured. In the back of Sakura’s mind, she knew she didn’t have anything to worry about because she could rely on her abilities as a ninja, not his, but it was still a comfort to have him with her as a steady, supportive presence.
When they finally reached Satou’s hospital room and they entered, Sakura gasped. Apparently, Satou had considered this place a prison cell rather than a patient room. The bed was tipped, and the curtain torn from the rod above the windows. The massive punched out crevices in the walls around them were threatening portraits of warning. Sakura heard Mako echo her surprise. Sensing their presence, Satou turned from the window and glowered at them.
“Glad to see my warden has finally come to see me,” the man spat viciously.
While Mako’s expression was one of disbelief, Sakura erased the emotion from her own, slipping on a blank pretense. Forget step three of her plan, then. It was obvious what kind of man Satou was. He had no respect or care in the world for anyone and her kindness would be seen as a weakness to bully her for. Pretending to be civil would be an entire waste of her time because Sakura recognized the hate in Satou’s eyes, glassy pools that reflected the darkness in his heart. How bitter it made Sakura—to see Sasuke’s formal self in one of her patients; how hopeless this conversation would be even though he was the one person who needed it the most.
Sakura believed this man deserved her gentlest persona, but Sakura had tried playing this game before and failed miserably with Sasuke. If Sakura—a former teammate and close friend—couldn’t have reached into the depth of Sasuke’s darkness and rip him from it, then how could she expect to be successful with an absolute stranger? She thought of Naruto and Gaara and how they might approach this. Adopting Naruto’s methods before, Sakurahad fought Sasuke to knock some sense into him, but Sakura couldn’t just go starting fights with her patients.
Confidence then. Sakura crossed her arms behind her back and raised her chin. “I’m not your warden; just someone who is trying to help you and your son.”
He began to laugh—that psychotic pitch that set Sakura’s heart racing. It frightened her to see that this man was more lost than she had thought. This wasn’t just a man who had taken his anger out on his son. “That’s what pisses me off the most about you leaf village filth. You think you have the right to march in and do as you please.”
Mako responded before Sakura could silence him, “Be careful what you say. Haruno-san is an honored guest of the Lord Kazekage and he asked for her assistance at the hospital.”
Well half true. I did invite myself here I suppose. Sakura didn’t correct Mako; Satou was completely prejudiced toward Konoha and its citizens. She reminded herself to steer clear of the political past between their two villages. Satou’s next comment brought an immediate halt to Sakura’a analytical approach to reasoning with him.
“You’d think the Kazekage wouldn’t give his whores a false sense of entitlement in village they don’t belong in.”
It was hard to contain her inner voice at that moment, who happened to be screaming loudly. WHO THE HELL DOES THIS BASTARD THINK HE IS?
Sakura let out a calming breath and put hand on Mako’s arm who was surprisingly doing a good enough job for the both of them at giving this terrifying ninja a piece of his mind despite the aptitude gap.
Before she could respond, the door opened and someone stepped in. Seeing Sasuke momentarily took her aback because that powder job should have taken him at least 45 minutes to complete, yet here he was a mere 10 minutes after being assigned the task. He must have a question.
And then Sakura saw his face. A red and purple combination flashed towards Satou and Sakura’s stomach dropped to her feet. Had he just heard what Satou called her?
When Sakura reached him and placed a hand on his arm, his gaze snapped from Satou and landed on her. “Did you need something?” she asked kindly, assessing the situation and deciding to act casually. Maybe if she came off as unaffected by Satou’s comment, then Sasuke wouldn’t feel the need to react.
“Here,” he responded gruffly after recovering some composure, shoving the mortar she had given him earlier towards the space between them. “You said you needed this quickly didn’t you? Go on ahead and make the batch. I’ll talk to this guy.”
Sakura briefly savored the startled look on Satou’s face before turning her body towards Sasuke so she could whisper in private with her teammate. “Sasuke, I don’t think that’s—”
“It’s fine,” he softened his murmur to match her whisper. As he said this, his sharingan faded and his emotionless mask slipped back on. “Just a talk between ninja.”
“I think it’s a great idea,” came Mako’s eager voice behind her, “I’ll stay too. You go on ahead and make that batch before time runs out.”
Sakura snapped her head towards him, shaking her head with large eyes in silent begging, but Sasuke was the one who spoke. “I didn’t ask you to stay. You can leave too.”
“He stays,” Sakura volunteered, to which Sasuke glowered at her for. “A doctor must be present during an exam, after all.” This was most definitely not professional, but Sakura had used a “time” excuse to keep Sasuke busy earlier. Mako knew as well as she did that it didn’t matter what time the Ashuwa was added to the mixture, and he was using her lie against her. She didn’t know her friend of a medic could be manipulative like that. Mako knew she didn’t want to tell Sasuke that she had fibbed about it.
Grabbing the mortar, Sakura peered up into the Uchiha’s eyes, reconsidering her fear of the two ninja meeting. If Naruto or Gaara weren’t here, maybe Sasuke was the next best person to talk to him. Now that he had come back to the light, perhaps Sasuke could reach Satou in a way that Sakura wouldn’t be able to. Sometimes people who had experienced trauma would only listen to someone who had shared a similar pain. And it had been proven to her throughout the years that sometimes only monsters could understand monsters.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sasuke waited until Sakura’s footsteps receded far enough down the hall before his eyes locked onto Satou for the second time.
“Uchiha. Uchiha Sasuke isn’t it?” Satou inquired, daring to speak first. “I never would have guessed I’d ever see your face again after the war.”
“Good. You know me.” Sasuke announced, fully entering the space and leaning against the right-most wall, just fifteen feet away from Satou in this small room. “Then you’re aware of the terrible things that I have done to better men than you.” To be honest, Sasuke hated to play the reputation card—in fact, he wanted to get as far from his past as possible, but he needed this bastard to know just exactly what he could still do to someone that pushed him far enough.
He noticed Mako shift excitedly at the left of the entrance. Apparently Mako was hoping for a show. Good, Sasuke thought, he needed to hear this too if the male physician had future plans to stay next to his friend.
Sasuke got straight to it. “The truth is that you’re not going to listen to anyone, so this is going to be a waste of time and breath.” Sasuke knew because he had been in this exact same frame of mind before.
“So why bother staying?” the man spat, rage leaking from his mouth like saliva from a rabid beast. Sasuke was correct in his analogy. Like Sasuke himself had once been, Satou was nothing more than a creature that there was no hope left for, and it needed to be taken out of this world. That’s what Gaara had practically told Naruto to do—take Sasuke out and do the right thing as his friend. It’s what Sakura had tried to do and failed.
But Naruto had done the impossible. With memories of his friend in his heart, Sasuke sighed and willed himself to put at least a little bit of effort into this for his friends’ benefit.
“For the sake of the woman you just called a whore. I care more about her and her goal than the few minutes I could be doing something more beneficial than talking to you.” Of course, he would never tell her that.
Sasuke felt like there was no point in beating around the bush. His voice would give out if he continued talking at this rate. He reminded himself that he didn’t owe any explanation, any psychological nonsense, just the cold truth that Satou needed to hear. Despite how hard he might try, Sasuke wouldn’t be able to pull this off like Naruto. Naruto would have marched up to him like a bull, grabbed his collar, proceed to threaten him for saying such a thing to Sakura, and then somehow miraculously convince this man to change.
Sasuke on the other hand, was less predictable. Depending on which part of his life you looked at, Sasuke could have had several reactions to Satou’s comment. The Sasuke before Orochimaru would have been angry but level-headed, at most offering the man an analytical glare. Sasuke immediately post-cursemark would have gutted him in the same mania he had broken that sound ninja’s arms in the Forest of Death. Vengeance-bent Sasuke would have completely not cared at all. But the Sasuke he was now? Even though he was on his path of redemption now, something in him had become honed again, sharpened along with the internal acknowledgement that he had feelings for Sakura. Despite his accepting of the truth, Sasuke hadn’t anticipated feeling this defensive and this is what scared Sasuke the most about himself—his unpredictability.
When Sasuke had tried to sever his bonds, it was to eliminate the feelings that came with them. He had seen it as a weakness. If his attachments were few, then Sasuke could remain loyal to a way of life he hoped for, one of peace. But having Sakura near again and feeling responsible for her had Sasuke fearing for the worst about his character. He had relayed this concern to Naruto before he left the village several weeks ago. “What will keep me from the darkness? From choosing the path of revenge?” “I will,” Naruto had responded. “I’ll stop you.” If men like this were regular in Sakura’s life, how could Naruto guarantee that Sasuke wouldn’t snap one day and kill every single person who threatened to do her harm? What if one of them succeeded? Could Naruto prevent everything? Stop, Sasuke told himself. Stop thinking like that.
Satou didn’t laugh again for the entire conversation. He remained standing by the window, narrowing his eyes at Sasuke in wary consideration since the Uchiha had arrived—not scared necessarily, but an enemy weighing his odds and deciding to avoid major triggers. Smart, Sasuke thought. Not completely brain dead then.
As Sasuke was consumed in silent thought, Mako stepped in for him. It was the first time all day Sasuke liked the medic. “We know that your wife died. Is that the reason you are abusing your son?”
Unlike with Sasuke, Satou revealed his temper, like a bomb going off without warning. “WHAT I DO WITH MY SON IS NOBODY’S DAMN BUSINESS BUT MY OWN.”
Unaffected by the sudden rise in volume, Sasuke surveyed the damaged room around them. Satou sure made it look like he was being held against his will, but the truth was, Sasuke realized, that if Satou had truly wanted to leave, he would have. There was nobody physically stopping him from leaving. The only thing really holding him here was Gaara’s command. Ah, so that was it. Badmouth the Kazekage all he wanted, Satou still respected one thing and that was power.
Sasuke tested the theory with, “The Kazekage believes it is his business.”
“Everything is apparently his damn business,” Satou growled in his direction.
Sasuke immediately noted that this was not a shouted response like he did when Mako spoke. Sasuke deduced that Satou held enough respect for the people he feared. That included himself. Damn. How annoying; Sasuke was going to have to do all the talking after all. To be honest, Sasuke had just wanted to remove Sakura from the situation and came up with the “talking” part to get Sakura to leave. Now, he supposed he would have to deliver.
Mako tried reasoning with him again: “Does the child remind you of your wife? Is that the reason you mistreat him?”
Satou’s eyes grew wide at Mako’s question. “HOW DARE YOU-“
Forget it. Talking like this was getting them nowhere. Sasuke’s visual prowess was nowhere near restored, but what Sasuke planned to do wouldn’t take up much chakra anyway. This wasn’t his typical style, but trying to talk with this man sure as hell wasn’t his style either. Sasuke revealed the black tomoes of his right Sharingan, instantly immobilizing the man where he stood.
“What are you doing?” Mako asked with concern, walking up beside him. “You’re not going to use a genjutsu?!”
“Just shut up and stay out of it,” Sasuke announced in annoyance. “I am getting the answers.”
Satou’s mind was a black, fiery wasteland that Sasuke stepped out on. The ninja’s memories appeared before him like colorless corpses rising from the grave. Sasuke walked forward toward the past surveying memories in order from most recent to oldest. The first memory that shaped in the air before him had Sasuke considering deactivating the jutsu. Whether he had subconsciously looking for this memory or not, Sasuke didn’t know, but he watched it play out before him. His pink-haired teammate was standing her ground, glaring up into the face of the man whose memories Sasuke violated. Sasuke frowned in hatred at the image of his fingers jabbing into her chest. Satou was looking down at her with a ferocity that he had yet to display towards anyone else. Why?
On cue, another memory emerged, connected to this one and providing Sasuke with the answer he wanted. It was during the war and Satou was immobilized on a cot, bandaged and regaining consciousness. Pink hair came into the ninja’s vision as he tried to roll to the side. “Miss,” he called toward the female ninja. “Where am I?”
“Stay still,” Sakura ordered him, pushing him back down on the cot. “Your leg is severely injured and needs to remain immobile.” She began giving orders to her assistants when a boom suddenly sounded somewhere nearby. Satou watched as she got to her feet and headed in that direction as someone began screaming her name.
“My wife,” he croaked, trying again to rise. This time, no one stopped him as he began to fumble towards the line of patients, some unconscious, others screaming. “Rina,” he sobbed, searching the faces of the incapacitated. “Where are you?”
He finally found her in the back row and he began limping faster toward her. “Rina!” he screamed, falling to his knees beside the woman who was bloody almost beyond recognition. Sasuke looked away from the memory as Satou began searching with hands for the wound on her body. Somehow the woman had reopened her injury and was now bleeding through the bandaging. When Satou found it, he began to moan. Satou clutched onto his broken wife and lifted her despite his leg. He was barely able to support her as he began limping back toward the medical professionals. “Haruno!” he tried to shout after the woman who had disappeared in the rising clouds of debris and dust. “Haruno!”
When a medic finally arrived to assist him, it wasn’t the one Satou had hoped for. “Please,” he begged them. “She’s dying—bleeding out!”
Sasuke saw the man’s world shatter on his face when the medic began to shake his head after checking the woman’s pulse. “I am sorry sir. She’s already gone.”
“No!” he began to scream, picking up his wife again and limping after the woman he believed could still save her. The memory ended after Satou disappeared into the rubble screaming after someone he clearly never found.
So that was it, Sasuke realized, stepping toward a new memory that materialized in the swirling darkness. He blamed Sakura for his wife’s death.
The next memory Sasuke played was Satou returning from the war and staring into the face of the child he and his wife had left behind. Sasuke was shocked at the resemblance the child held of Rina; Sasuke witnessed Satou experience the blow of pain that came at seeing the same likeness. When the child reached for him with tears in his eyes, Satou turned away from him, covering his anguished face and stepping past the threshold. Isao’s current caretaker reached for him to relieve his father’s neglect.
Sasuke felt like he had ashes in his mouth. He was more familiar with grief than anyone, but grief affected people in different ways. Sasuke both understood and didn’t understand. He didn’t dare go further; Sasuke knew what happened next concerning the child and didn’t want to see it for himself.
Deactivating his Sharingan, Sasuke withdrew from the black backdrop of Satou’s mind.
“What did you just do?” Satou asked, sinking to the floor on his knees and holding his head, an aftereffect that had Mako looking between the two ninja in fearful concern.
Sasuke saw no point in explaining to either of them. Satou was more than aware of what just happened. “I could erase a couple of those memories,” Sasuke explained to the whimpering man on the floor who gazed up at him in anger. “Is that what you want?”
Satou hesitated before saying, “You could really do that?”
“Is that what you really want?” Sasuke asked bitterly, “for someone to reach into your mind and take away all memory of your wife or child? To dishonor the both of them?”
“No,” Satou declared at that. “Not if it will remove them from my memory. The pain— just take that away.”
“Pain is a part of life and not something I can tamper with,” Sasuke deadpanned. “If you let it, your pain will turn into darkness, consume you, and taint every aspect of your life. Your son is the only thing you have left of your wife. You should value that and cling to that as your light.”
Sasuke understood what Sakura meant earlier when she told Sasuke her conversation with Gaara about the past generation affecting the next with their toxicity. Satou didn’t repond and Sasuke didn’t say anything else. He had said what he needed to although it left the Uchiha feeling like a hypocrite.
Turning to Mako, Sasuke declared, “Send the son to the Leaf’s mental health clinic; get him as far away as you can. The child needs to be in a different environment, or he will turn out like father. It’ll give Satou some time to reconsider what’s important to him.”
Opening the door, Sasuke thought twice before exiting. “Also,” he remarked to the man who began to sob on the ground. “The next time you lay your hands on my friend, you’ll have me to deal with, not the Kazekage.”
Satou began to scream in anger, throwing things against the walls again. The door swung shut behind Sasuke and Mako, closing the prisoner in his self-made cell.

OC ABCs: Y1 through Y5, please!
1. How old were you when you created them?
Let's see. Oh wow, to be honest I had to do a bit of math here since I've had Kiomi for so long. SOOOOOO long. And guess what. Even I'm surprised to remember that I created her back when I was 13 years old. It's been what, 17 years since then. Man, time sure flies.
2. What inspired you to create them?
Often times my inspiration to create characters (either making an OC or taking up a canon) is due to friend influence. Kiomi was probably the only one that doesn't share that. Because I was relatively new to the Naruto fandom back when I first made her and I just wanted some interaction from people who played in the verse. (I didnt even know what canon was back in the day. Like, I had no idea that they were called that.) So I made a character with attributes that I liked, elements that I like, etc. while learning all about jutsus and stuff, and how the verse operated. I'm a bit rusty now specially since I've been on a very long Hiatus, but yeah. My inspiration for her came from the desire for interaction and story weaving. That's when I met my first friend in the verse, which just so happened to be an Orochimaru. They were very apprehensive and iffy about OCs but apparently, we were able to hit it off well enough that they were comfortable about interacting with my muse. So apart from just story building, my friend's Orochimaru was part of the inspiration, specially for the environment that she grew up in.
3. Were they different when they were first created?
Well, for starters she's less of a brat now than she was back then. She was so problematic when I first made her. She was so ridiculously rebellious to the point where she throws things at her lord when she becomes pissy and throws tantrums. (One thing hasn't changed though. If Kabuto tells her to behave, she behaves. xD) She's better at handling that now.
Her personality is fleshed out better too. Years of interaction with Muns and Muses alike have allowed me to explore her persona and characteristics. That enabled me to add the layers that were necessary to make her feel more organic.
Let me just say that I love Naruto movies and plotting with friends. Back when all I had was the fact that she's from Yukigakure and that her family was part of a genocide, I was wondering how to tie stuff into the verse more properly. Because of the history of the Kazahana's in the Land of Snow, the technical advancement the place had, I've been able to incorporate that knowledge into creating information for her clan.
Those are just some of the changes that's happened for my muse over the years, but I think my favorite part of the changes is the fact that she has some bonds now that are relatively real. Something that she believes is worth fighting form. Loss is a very big part of her character evolution. The more loss she experience, the more her personality shifts. She's always tethering along the threshold of wanting and protecting bonds, and not wanting to have anything to do with it.
I love the fact that she doesn't feel the desperation for a bond until it's there. Back then, she really wouldnt have given a crap. But now, when she experiences something genuine, she develops an eagerness to protect it. However, when it comes to bonds, the one thing that hasn't really changed is the fact that she'll try to avoid it as much as possible, until she realizes that she can't.
Kiomi's also actually pretty defiant. But I found that mellowing over the years too. When she realized how that gets her into too much trouble, she eventually toned it down. However, it's been replaced by her chronic lying-- which isn't too good a thing either. But the chronic lying is basically her defense mechanism now, because from the start she is bad at dealing with people. Being honest lands her in disadvantageous situations, so she resorted to lies. (She just doesn't know it yet, but that'll get her in bigger trouble. Dont tell her, okay? ^_~ ) Also, being a liar helps her interact better with strangers for intel gathering. When she's faced with strangers, you can bet your horses that the first thing she lies about is her affiliation with Otogakure, because she's learned that not a lot of people trusts shinobi from the Hidden Sound Village. So it's not too strange to see her pretending to be a civilian. It's also the reason why she's often without her hitai ate.
But you know what, Kiomi is inherently a good kid at the core. It’s just that she ended up growing up in an environment that didn’t allow for too much of that. This is why if you’ll notice in some of my threads, she’s actually quite nice to people in similar situations such as her.
4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?
I do, actually. Among all of my OCs, I have an attachment to Kiomi. It's probably because I've had her for so long that I can't get enough of her and her growth.
This has reached the point where, if ever I go RPing on another verse or when I return from a long Hiatus (like I have done as of recent) I always end up penning for Kiomi. It's not that I like my other muses any less, it's just my one brain cell has a tendency to pick what it likes and it does like this particular muse.
I'm surprised how well she can adapt to other verses as well, which makes it easier for me to integrate her in certain verses whenever I get a burnout for Naruto. For example, I've played her in Devil May Cry before wherein the two verses kind of semi-merged. It was fun. From shinobi, she casually just got a job in Devil May Cry for devil hunting, I got to make her her own Devil Arm, etc. I've played her in a Fate Stay Night setting where she's the master of the world's oldest bully and even if they dont get along very well, they're able to function as a master-servant team when the need arises. Otherwise she's Gil's personal mongrel. I think one of my favorite crossovers had to be in Magic The Gathering where she's an apprentice to Sorin Markov.
So yes, I do love writing for her, so much.
5. what’s your favorite thing about them?
My favorite thing about Kiomi is her personality. Specially now that I can play on the complication of her emotions.
The best thing that ever happened to her was the fact that she made bonds that she didn't want to lose while knowing for a fact that her the friends that she made belonged to the enemy side. That gave her a lot of things to think about. Decisions of whether she throws away years of loyalty for something new is something I enjoy playing out. Although eventually I know where she returns and whom she returns to, depending on how much she grows attached to the other muse and how willing both parties are to make it canon, that's the only time that it may change.
The good thing about the Next Gen setting is that Otogakure has better relations with Konoha...at least compared to when the entire Naruto series began. This allows Kiomi to have a little freedom in terms of socializing with the little friends that she actually made.
Love's an aspect that I want to explore, but yeaaah. That's hard for her because she dislikes the notion very much. Although I'm sure that if the right person comes along, the possibility of her opening up and feeling for the other person still exists. As much as there's an RP outside tumblr where she does love someone. I do have her as a mutli-ship so basically all bonds are different per verse.
One of my other favorite thing is that she works well with people she hates. It's really funny because I find that-- for starters, Kiomi dislikes Sasuke with a passion. This is pretty much a classic case of Genius vs Hard Work. Sasuke's pretty much a stark reminder of everything that she wants. He's chosen by Orochimaru, he's strong and talented, he's a cut above the rest, for sure. All her hard work gets blown out of the water along with her desire to be the vessel because a favorite exists. But above all, she's actually pretty jealous that he still has a family in the form of his brother. But yes, she hates him so much, but apparently whenever I roleplay with Sasuke's they seem to have certain areas for synergy. Mainly because Kiomi will prevent him from getting killed (that's her job). So she'll help him out, tend to his wounds, spar with him, etc. So there's a certain dynamic there which I enjoy. That's why, to be fairly honest, Sasuke interactions is probably one of my favorites because the rawness of Kiomi's feelings come out. And I really love the fact that I can make this hate canon so easily because she doesn’t need an initial validation from him. She can just hate him on her own until such a time when they meet. It’s great because the more he ignores her, the more she gets pissed off, the more she works harder. Even up to Next Gen, Sasuke’s still her goal, albeit with decreased animosity. *Cough*Frenemies Please*Cough*

It's a freaking meme for me, but I love how she gets into a fight with every Katon user she meets. She didn't get Katon'd, sure, but her worst run in was probably with an Itachi who Tsukuyomi'd her. That was really fun to play out but stressful. They became associates after. xD
Also, her awful way of phrasing some things. Sometimes, when she has a hard time of expressing herself, she ends up blurting things that's easy to misinterpret. It's pretty funny, all the trouble it causes.

So many other characters deserved to live in Naruto. It’s disgusting that Orochimaru did, and you fan or not you should accept that it’s bullshit. Not to mention this stanning Orochimaru nonsense as a Non binary icon. Orochimaru is a child murderer not an icon.

Let’s address one thing first and foremost: you have no right, not a single right, to tell someone how they should feel. The LGBTQ+ community was happy that there was a non binary character portrayed (I know I and a select group of lgbtq+ were at least). And mind you, Oro properly came out as Nb after they morally transformed and sought redemption in their own manner.
Either way, whether they’re good or evil in your mind, if someone takes comfort in a media portrayal of a lgbtq+ character, if they relate, find happiness or reassurance seeing their favourite broach a topic that is so often ignored - leave them the hell alone about it.
Don’t think Oro is a nb icon? Can’t stand people rejoicing about the content that gives the community something to enjoy? Don’t follow the Oro tag. You obviously don’t like the character. Why obsessively follow or seek out this content that’s just ganna make you want to hate on something?
Then lastly, on the subject of whether they “deserve to live” or not. Not only is what they deserve irrelevant to plot, as nowhere was it stated that good always wins and bad always dies - but the judgement on Oro’s character is so bias as a whole.
Yup, killing children and everyone else is heinous and unforgivable.
Wanna know who else killed children?
Itachi - who slaughtered an entire clan, aka babies, children, elderly and everyone else.
Deidara - a bombing terrorist. You think his bombs killed masses but made sure to spare the children?
99% of the shinobi population: children are soldiers. Sad but true. The fact that the Hokage sent children to war should in itself count as murdering children. But that aside, children are shown dying all the time. Do you think because it’s off screen it doesn’t count? Children are shinobi from ages 6 up at times, and not all make it. In other words, adults are killing children in those battles.
Madara/Obito: the nine tails attack spark anyone’s memory? Did everyone think that puppy trampled thousands but picked his little toes up to avoid children? Unlikely.
Pein: whether everyone was evacuated in time or not during that invasion is unknown to me. Either way, his aim was to wreck the village in the process of his goals. I didn’t see him leading children out hand by hand before exacting that plan.
Clans in general: maybe no child death per se but does everyone gloss over the fact that as an example, the Hyūga branded children as if it was a-okay? Neji as a tiny boy was forced in to slavery by his own family. But not a thing is mentioned about how that clan should be eradicated due to it. Hinata’s dad gets to live, for actively harming a child and other relatives.
Kabuto: also a scientist. Also experimenting on whatever he got his hands on. We see him managing more projects than Oro come the future.Yet Itachi, Obito, Kabuto and Madara are deemed ‘tragic heroes’, the Hokage are deemed legends and saviours, the clans are pardoned on the notion ‘they knew no better and it was tradition’, Deidara is ‘too young and cute’ to be held accountable for murder, and the other 99% of the shinobi population are mostly nameless, so hey, get out of jail cards all around.
I could go on, but I feel a point has been reached. We are all sad heroes like Neji and Jiraiya are dead. But being sad over your favourite dying is no excuse to be demanding the fans of other characters be remorseful their “villainous” favourites lived.
No one said you had to forgive these characters, the plot was about finding redemption and change. That means that even the worst of the worst needed to have a change of heart to show that “anyone can change” and that “good prevails”. It is enough that these bad characters saw their ill ways and changed tune, no one has to forgive them. No crime has to be overlooked.
The victory is showing that good won out. That the right belief was revealed to be correct and even the corrupt had to admit it.
I’m not answering anything on this again, but please be a little more conscious when you bash a character. You don’t have to like or appreciate them, you just have to respect the fans who do and treat them how you want to be treated.

Is your character popular in the fandom? YES / NO / 50/50 (He has very few or no fans since the majority of the Naruto fandom hates him. He only got attention after his involvement in the Fourth Ninja War and that he fought Itachi and Sasuke. If he didn’t, he would’ve totally been forgotten.)
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom? YES / NO / 50 /50 (It depends since he’s not everyone’s taste since he’s not as hot or attention grabbing as Sasuke or Kakashi. Especially after he injected Orochimaru’s cells into him and looks the way he does. To me and a few others, he’s still very hot.)
Is your character considered strong in the fandom? YES / NO (He always has been without the use of flashy jutsu since his cunning, the chakra scalpel and his reanimation jutsu is all he needs to ruin your day. He was in the same level as Kakashi and that’s saying something, definitely after becoming a Sage to the point of being able to go toe to toe with not one, but two Uchihas. Something that is mentioned by Chiyo that taking on one Uchiha alone is a suicidal idea.)

How’s their reputation? GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. (I would assume that not everyone forgives him for his past evil deeds. But so far, he’s doing good with being the caretaker of orphans. Only time will tell if he really is trusted by Society.)
How strictly do you follow canon? Very closely and I tend to rewatch episodes and reread the manga when I start to think that he’s leaning towards OOC territory but I don’t pay attention to fillers since they tend to exaggerate his personality to the point of turning him into some Saturday Cartoon Villain. But personally, I try to stick to canon but sadly it’s quite impossible since not much is revealed about him and his mysterious personality tends to surprise me with some new facts in the show. I stick to canon but for others, I’m willing to do some AUs but his personality and profession and skills won’t change at all.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals. Guys, Kabuto is really more awesome than he looks! He’s so smart, so intelligent and he is so nice and mean at the same time! Despite how complicated the medical field is, when you actually do some research on whatever it is that you want, it can be quite intriguing and learning new things is fun. Spy movies tend to always be good inspiration since Kabuto is extremely good at his role as a spy so it leave up to you all’s wonderful imagination of how many roles and identities he could have tried and then succeed in. Not only that, even though he used Orochimaru’s cells to become a sage, he survived and mastered the Sage art like Naruto. He’s so snarky, rude, and smug as hell that you just love to hate him. Also, he’s now on Konoha’s side and he’s taking better care of the orphans and you’re damn right he’s going to defend and love all of them. I would love to see him immediately eliminate anyone who tries to pull the same shit that Danzo did to the orphanage in the past. He’s the definition of character development from bad to good and it’s shocking. Also he’s single and one of the only characters to not end up married or so it seems...
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?). This son of a bitch is moody as hell and his entire character is so filled with gaps that he needs some headcanons to fill them up. Not only that, he’s a shy guy who doesn’t like attention being brought to him and he’s so vague that his loyalties to anyone is a guess since not even Orochimaru knows where Kabuto’s loyalties lie. There is a reason why many muns tend to not be Kabuto blogs for very long, or at least as long as I have since canon tends to make him as unlikeable as possible. His assistance and participation with Orochimaru’s experiments is despicable at best and he’s worst when he puts up a shit eating grin while doing so. Another thing is, his character kind of revolves around Orochimaru and even that can get boring and stagnant quite fast at times. Also there are people who will always be discouraging you from having fun with Kabuto since almost everyone takes one look at him and they react with, “Really, seriously this guy?” and Kabuto is suddenly the subject of humiliation of some sorts. I also understand that not many Orochimaru or Kabuto rpers rp Orokabu but sometimes the fandom just assumes they ship them when some don’t want to ship them. There’s a longer list of why people don’t like them for their own reasons so I’ll just leave it at that.
What inspired you to rp your muse?
Believe it or not, I never did take a glance at Kabuto’s direction at first because my favorite characters were Kisame Hoshigaki and Orochimaru and Kabuto was just lucky enough to get my attention whenever Orochimaru showed up. It was only after the manga ended when I decided to take on Kabuto since I always wanted to rp a thread with one but all I had was an OC blog that no one would look at and a Manda blog but there was so much things that you can’t rp when you’re an angry purple noodle. Not to mention that it’s some sort of a dedication to two amazing Kabuto rpers who helped me through and through with my first time roleplaying in Tumblr years ago.
So, with some convincing by a friend, I decided to turn into one to make up for the lack of Kabuto in Tumblr that many rpers wanted back then and since then, it’s been so challenging and fun! It’s been years now and despite my inactivity in some days due to my offline drama and moods, I won’t leave the rp fandom anytime soon. :D
What keeps your inspiration going? Oh boy! He always surprises me with little things revealed about him. When one pays attention to him and his actions, a lot can be revealed if you look carefully. I always find new things about him and I love to see the minority appreciate the character enough that it makes me smile and it persists me to keep going. I also need to hear his english dub voice since that’s usually the voice I hear when I think of how muse would feel about something.

Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO.

Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal? I’ll be honest with ya’ll. I tend to be more self-critical of myself more than anyone else would to the point that I need periods of time for myself to regain the confidence to rp Kabuto as he was meant to be portrayed. But I do accept criticisms but only if they’re the helpful kind who will at least show me examples of why I am in the wrong but also know from my standpoint of why I did this for him.
I had a horrible experience once with constant criticisms and character bashing to the point that I wasn’t having fun rping my muse anymore and it had instilled this kind of fear in me of asking for the opinions of others and only to feel humiliated and insecure for rping a complex character who’s out of my league. I try to portray him close to canon and I also felt horrible since I didn’t want to be someone who refuses good criticisms. I’ve recovered since then after some self healing of myself and I would like some advice if anyone wants to help me improve, I would really love some tips on how to write darker subjects.
So to be honest, it will depend if the critic knows about Kabuto well enough to know their stuff about him and not just label him based on their own opinions of him or from the fandom. I don’t know anything about medical topics and I’m obviously not a shinobi though I do at least try to learn things at my own pace since I’m a very slow learner. I also would like for ya’ll to read the rest of my stuff and drabbles too to know more of my portrayal of him but I’m also improving as I go. I have been rping him for 4 years now, and my writing has changed since. Or maybe not, but I am comfortable with what I write.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character? Yes! Because whenever I’m asked questions about him, it gives me a moment to try to put myself in his shoes to see how he would react and what he would think while keeping his true personality intact. Sometimes it takes me days but I always get them done. I love that whenever I rewatch an episode, I often find little things that the character does and I’m like, “Oh! He likes to do that! I had no idea but I love it!” I also love that I have fellow rpers who also help me out with questions like these. Feel free to send me headcanon asks since I would love to answer them.
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why? I like it if someone gave me a heads up about it and if they want more questions of why I would make it a headcanon, I’ll be happy to tell them about it. I don’t mind fixing it if it comes off as something that Kabuto would not really do. I like to improve the muse a bit.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it? As mentioned in the criticize questions, I would be a bit sad since I am trying my best to rp Kabuto as well without going too OC but I’ll accept it since every portrayal is unique. But we probably won’t rp as much since I grow at my own pace and I want to know how they see Kabuto. And if they have a entirely different idea of their version of Kabuto and ignore the key aspects to his canon personality, then I will ignore it. We probably won’t be following each other either sadly. I don’t want to change my muse to fit their need for whatever reasons.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it? I try to deal with it and ignore it since like I said, Kabuto is quite hated and overlooked in the fandom, even more hated than Orochimaru since they grab much attention than Kabuto. And it is ok if you have an opinion on a character and you don’t like certain aspects of them. But I had personally dealt with some people who take that hatred to personal levels and portray that in a thread or rp and I had no choice but to limit or completely cut off my contact with them for my own emotional health since they did not make rping Kabuto fun for me at all. I would black list them if it’s just childish hate with no understanding of them at all.
This is a blog that loves and appreciates Kabuto Yakushi. And I am the mun who loves him enough to try to put the effort to give him justice and stay true to the character.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors? I don’t mind really, just don’t too overly critical and rude about it since I’m quite good at english but not to the point of a literature goddess. I really love to look online for new phrases or new words to add to my writing so I don’t mind you sending me some tips. Especially those “if you to use other words for said” posts. Purple prose is a challenge for me so I will add detail but don’t expect it to be done or written as beautifully as many other muns I know do. I also don’t like to change my text for appearance since I don’t like to squint at the screen just to read a sentence.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun? Honestly, I have no idea since I’m too shy to ask but I do try to be since I rather not be the type of person to be a rude despite my Latina blood. I’m actually quite shy and I like to have my space since talking offline is a bit a challenge for me since talking about myself is not something I’m used to very often. I really hate drama and it messes up my moods a lot when it happens. I’m also quite a forgiving person but I also am a bit nervous around more bold rpers who are not afraid to say what they think they say. I’m not a fan of people spreading false rumors about other people and turning people against each other because of their personal opinions of them. I also can’t stand politics so leave me out of that stuff. Overall, I think I am, but I’m more shy and I learned to keep my own personal opinions to myself to keep the peace. I’m also willing to apologize for any misunderstandings and something I did since honestly, it’s hard to talk online when anything can be misread.
