Just finished Nona the Ninth and I can’t get John’s sob story out of my head.
He spends so much time mentioning how sleep deprived he was, how confused, how he didn’t know what he was doing, but then there’s those times – with P- after he first killed the cops, and later with the nun (Cristabel?) – that it’s clear he knows exactly what he’s doing.
“Guys as careful as me don’t have accidents.”
John is the ultimate unreliable narrator. We can’t believe anything he says. He’s pretty candid about his friends’ arguments with him, but was he really worried they’d blame themselves if he gave them their memories back? Or did he know damn well they’d blame him?
I think John did care about his friends, and the planet, at one point. I think he started as some guy trying to help.
And then he went from working in a lab to dealing with governments, carrying nukes, and everyone was looking to him for answers. I think he got used to being worshiped, and stopped thinking about how others might be feeling about this whole thing. I think the power went to his head.
I think he stopped thinking about how his actions affected others, or caring. I think he started assuming he was always right. I think he had a pretty literal God complex, and he picked it up well before the Resurrection. I’ll bet there were seeds of it before he even got his powers.
He never considered anything other than his perfect cryo plan, did he?
I think he knew exactly what he was doing when he killed people, when he killed his best friend, when he killed the sun and the planets and even his precious Earth. I think he wanted to punish his enemies and knew it would make him a God.
Maybe he does still love them. People are complicated. He could still love them, but he loves being God more. He still loves them, but mostly the idea of them.
He loves them, but he loves himself most of all. Even more than he hates himself for it.

So, it's the last days and a weird-looking guy called John is yelling about the end of the world.
AKA, it's Advent and we've reached the stage of Alectopause where I'm apparently writing Bible studies for the weird goth teens that hang out in graveyards... So let's talk about portentious guys called John and why a nun might have joined a necromancy cult.
Anyway, you know Advent, the cheerful and cozy time when we all think about cute baby Jesus as we get ready for Christmas, right?
WRONG
It's currently the second Sunday of Advent, and in lots of churches that follow the liturgical year, people will have been hearing about John the Baptist today (Me: "John". My phone: "Gaius?". Me: "John the-". My phone: "Necromancer?").
Without going into too much detail, John the Baptist is important because he's a prophet that points to the coming of Jesus. He first does this rather impressively in utero, but is probably best known for wandering the wilderness wearing camel hide and eating locusts, shouting about how the end is nigh and, hence the name, baptising people to cleanse them from their sins. People are pretty impressed by all this and start asking him if he is the promised messiah or one of the great prophets come again. He answers no, his job is to point towards one greater than him. He baptises Jesus, the heavens open, and not long afterwards John annoys the authorities and ends up with his head on an ornamental platter.
Now John the Baptist obviously isn't the main Biblical John evoked by John Gaius. That dubious honour probably goes to the beloved disciple John the Apostle, also known for The Gospel According To and The Apocalypse Of, aka the Book of Revelation, the Bible's account of the end of the world.
But John the Baptist (no, autocorrect, not "John the Necromancer") is relevant too, and not just because he's a guy called John, chosen by a higher power to lay the groundwork for better things to come and who falls afoul of the authorities with dramatic consequences.
Let's cycle back round to Advent for a moment. The reason Advent can both be aww cute little baby Jesus and also WHERE ARE YOU GOING WHEN YOU DIE?! is because in Christian theology, Jesus' birth and the end of the world are linked: the first and the second coming of Christ.
In Nona The Ninth, we learn that John and his friends are living in a world on the edge. Without some incredible plan - the cryo ships, the promise of FTL - everyone is going to die. Humanity has rendered the world uninhabitable. Although we get very few details of the broader geopolitical situation, we have to assume it's one rife with natural disasters and conflict.
In the Bible, Jesus talks about a world with famines and earthquakes, wars and rumours of wars, where to find yourself in those days with children would be a tragedy and to be pregnant even worse (maternity problem, anyone?). Specifically, this is when he talks about the signs of the end of the world and his second coming.
So what about M-'s nun? The first time we meet her is when she's advising John against his all-day Jesus Christ Superstar healing ministry.
And John's anxiety about meeting her is pretty apt. He says: "I was worried I was going to get the Antichrist bit from her too". Note the "too" - by this point, John has already been accused of being the Antichrist. Why? Because alongside those rumours of wars and earthquakes, Jesus gives another sign to watch out for: false prophets.
But M-'s nun saw John and his powers and - for reasons we never learn - believed they were miraculous, a gift from God. She appealed to the Vatican to investigate and recognise this. And her presence and this campaign apparently made a significant impact in reducing some of the issues they were facing. Somehow, she met awful, smarmy John and his corpse buddies and thought she was seeing the hand of God miraculously at work in the last days.
This bears repeating, because I've seen suggestions that she believed he was God, or was somehow converted to the cause of necromancy, but at least by John's narrative it's much simpler than that: right to the end she's praying for him in very Catholic terms to find clarity in his purpose.
This is the last we see of her:
She just smiled at me. She said, John, don’t misunderstand. I want to help you. I truly believe that in our most terrible hours we don’t instinctively reach out to God; we push ourselves away from Him. Don’t feel bad for not rising heroically to the occasion right now. Fear doesn’t help us achieve a state of grace; it deafens the heart. John, I truly believe you can save everyone. So concentrate, please. She said, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. And she shot herself.
While obviously you are probably not walking a straightforwardly orthodox path if you're shooting yourself to help the leader of a self-proclaimed necromancy cult locate the soul, her language here is very focused on the Catholic understanding of sin and death. A "state of grace" refers to the condition of your soul when it's not burdened with serious sins. It's the state you're in after you're baptised or after you've been to confession. Being in a state of grace is one's soul being on a wavelength with God; it's the necessary state to enter heaven.
And the Hail Mary? Catholics believe that Mary has the power to intercede for them with God. And the most important moment at which she could intercede would be at the point of death where the state of your soul determines your eternal destination. This isn't a wacky necromancy cultist talking. I suspect she sees this less as a suicide (which the Catholic Church has historically not had the most nuanced views on...) than a fulfilment of Jesus' teaching to keep his commandments and that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends.
We're not privy to exactly what she thought, and I don't think anyone's suggesting her approach was entirely orthodox, but if he's not the Second Coming, and he's not the Antichrist, and there are wars and rumours of wars and floods and earthquakes...did she see him as a prophet of the apocalypse? A sort of John the Baptist of the end times, who in demonstrating the reality of the soul would bring people to Christ before He came again?
Unfortunately for M-'s nun, John was not what she fervently believed him to be. And unlike John the Baptist, who said no when asked if he was something he was not, John used M-'s nun's death as a springboard to claim the trappings of both divinity and Catholicism for himself.
Unfortunately for John, judgement is coming in the form of an angry teenager Harrowing Hell and the very power he usurped, armed with a very big sword.

Wayne Rogers Vs. Alejandro Rey
Propaganda
Wayne Rogers - (M*A*S*H, Stagecoach West, City of Angels) - "He just had this warmth and gentleness to him that made him sooo attractive no matter at what age..." Full text propaganda below the cut.
Alejandro Rey - (The Flying Nun) - With its mostly female core cast, The Flying Nun may be an odd property to source a Hot Man from, but look at him. As debonair playboy Carlos Ramirez, Rey had to meet the difficult task of being suave and sexy but also really over the top, continually exasperated, and funny, and he delivered so well. He's hilarious as a foil to Sally Field's earnest Sister Bertrille, Carlos essentially being her combination best friend, low-stakes antagonist, shenanigans victim, and (according to some fans) maybe love interest. Though primarily acting for comedy, Rey's also able to handle scenes that require more warmth and subtlety, and he just looks divine. The eyes and the profile alone are enough to make you forgot the ridiculous late-60s fashions he wears.
Master Poll List | How to submit propaganda | What is vintage? (FAQ)
Additional propaganda below the cut
Wayne Rogers:
He just had this warmth and gentleness to him that made him sooo attractive no matter at what age. If his good looks and his charming smile (and those curls ahh!) aren't enough to convince you to vote for this nice, funny, 6ft tall man, then let me hit you with some random information What i adore is the duality of this man! First he served his duty in the navy and was about to study law when he accompanied a friend to a theatre play one evening and was so amazed by the art of acting that he decided to achieve an acting career instead. When he wanted to leave MASH after only three seasons -although the contract said for him to stay much longer-, they couldn't do anything about it bc he hadn't even signed it in the first place (there was a paragraph in it that he strongly disagreed with). If that isn't badass idk what is! And later in his career, not only did he act, write and produce all kinds of TV, movie and stage productions but he also started a successful financial business. Also (at least when he was older) he supposedly went for a swim in the sea EVERY morning. Btw when he was still getting started and was financially struggling, he shared a flat in New York and an overcoat for auditions with (also still struggling) colleague Peter Falk

Round 3, Match 3
M—'s Nun/Cristabel Oct (The Locked Tomb) vs Miss Clavel (Madeline)
Art of M—'s Nun by @franzias-cave
Poll Runner's Note: Miss Clavel had to look after 12 little girls but M—'s Nun had to deal with 16 grown adults (and two teen zombies).
M—'s Nun/Cristabel Oct
She was good with little kids and animais, She committed suicide , twice. Both of times out of devotion to the man she thought was God but the second time also perhaps out of lesbian love for her best friend - an atheist bioengineer who experimented on human bodies and had no qualms killing for that same man. She knows the protocol to follow to report miracles direct to the Vatican, she also knows how use a gun and later on learned how to fight with a sword and a chain as off hand like in the coliseum. She was described as lunatic, she helped fund a sect of a new religion, no one could hate her not even the brother of the man she made a suicide pact with.
------
Cristabel isn't best nun she's worst nun. Nobody is doing it like her. Nobody should do it like her. She sees someone hesitating and goes "is anyone else going to kill themselves to force that guy's hand" and doesn't even wait for an answer. She did this twice.
Miss Clavel
Miss Clavel takes regular care of 12 girls, and the neighboring ambassador's son (who has major issues). She is able to sense trauma in the girls even while asleep and saves one from appendicitis. She goes above and beyond, traveling across the country with her girls to support them when a grandparent dies. She never stops searching if one goes missing. She keeps their emotional well-being at the forefront, even when her school is threatened by snobby donors.

In dark enough settings, it can shed low light. Eyes: Like frozen pools; her right eye is a sharp blue, and her left is a clear lavender. Skin: Ghostly pale, dotted with occasional beauty marks. Tattoos/scars: Graced with stretch marks but beyond that no notable scars.

Abilities: - Odette is a beacon to lost souls, ghosts, and spirits. They flock to her and under the umbrella of her influence their forms are altered into that of moths. They cling to her, calling for aid which she lends as best she can. Odette is a psychopomp, she guides the dead without judgment. She can see, hear, and otherwise interact with these lost and stuck souls. She has a custom job fusion of WHM (Conjury)/PLD.
- A strong defensive fighter, Odette prefers her shield and conjurer’s cane to the sword that hangs at her side. She wields her shield well, trusting in it fully to keep herself and her loved ones safe. When she plants her cane, the river rises.
- Kulning is an ancient form of herding calls used over long distances. Odette learned the skill in her youth and uses it still, calling in her small flock of Karakul at her home. Is this important enough to put here? Probably not, it’s just an additional fun fact! For you!
Hobbies: Reading, gardening, knitting (badly), and exploration. She also plays piano and harp.
T R A I T S
Most Positive Trait: The warmth of her personality, her willingness to meet and love people as they are and as they change. Her curiosity about the people around her. Most Negative Trait: Her inability to trust herself, her eagerness to trust others above herself. People don’t care for the stealing, either.
L I K E S
Colors: Blues, Purples, Silver, and a pop of red. Smells: Rich, damp soil; Cedar; sun-ripened peaches; sweet, warm vanilla. Textures: The warmth of hand-spun wool, wood worn smooth with use, the delicate touch of petals against skin. Drinks: Hot chocolate with marshmallows and butterscotch, lemonade infused with different fruits and flowers.
O T H E R D E T A I L S
Smokes: Not cigarettes. Drinks: No. Drugs: Yes, pretty heavily. She cannot sleep so she takes drugs to sort of ‘float’ in a resting state. It doesn’t work but it is better than nothing. Mount Issuance: Odette is not insured to ride anything. She walks most places, or takes ferries and airships where she can. She owns a Chocobo, named Beauty, who was gifted to her by her friend None. Most of the time if she is riding, she rides Rou, her most loyal Karakul. Been Arrested: No, but she should have been.

Nona the Ninth Reaction - John 1:20
i honestly hadn’t considered that John would have access to a bunch of other info, like the FTL planning to leave everyone behind, via the politician he’s puppeting around. he’s practically running the government of this unspecified country at this point. i mean i guess it was good practice for everything he’d later end up doing as Emperor
‘I’ve got plans for that arm’ um. what. y'know what i really really don’t want to even know
for a guy who keeps saying he didn’t want to nuke anything he’s reallyyy leaning into the nukes every chance he gets
something i find very interesting is that John possibly also has powers besides necromancy that he’s seemingly glossed over a lot? even though they’re very toothy, he can apparently grow roses, and earlier C— talks about him potentially stabilising the North Glacier like that’s something he could definitely do. i wonder if it is actually possible to use thalergy, the life energy stuff, which really never gets mentioned that much tbh, in a similar way to thanergy?
ok how on earth is ‘Cows exhibit mourning behaviour for other cows’ such a goddamn impactful line. like its a really chilling moment of John confirming that he’s willing to start a nuclear war rather than let the ships leave. and it’s also objectively fucking ridiculous
John’s reflection here on his friends doubting him, and how ‘People don’t forgive, not really’ is very interesting considering his actions at the end of HtN, where he asks Augustine if they can have a ‘fresh slate’ in the wake of him killing Mercy. idk really what i’m trying to say here, but i do wonder how much John really meant what he was offering there
well what with Ianthe, Harrow, and Kiriona, John certainly took M—’s remark about recruiting teenage girls in the next cult to heart
what i’m personally choosing to take away from this chapter is that multitasking is the true villain of the Locked Tomb universe. get some sleep and stop trying to do six things at once kids, or you might just end up nuking the entire earth
‘I can’t Sister. It’s too big’ i’m quite frankly a little disappointed that John didn’t take the opportunity to make a ‘that’s what she said’ joke here
holy crap, the nun shooting herself is certainly a moment. this is really leaning into the eldritch horror of what it would be like to be a human and aware of the Earth literally screaming at you
there’s such a tragic contrast between M— literally begging in her last moments for them not to shoot John vs Mercy being the one to kill him & John killing her so horrifically in return
John’s been essentially levelling up in necromancy as all of these chapters have progressed, but it’s a truly horrifying level of power he displays here. it’s not even the nukes that end up killing a lot of people, because John points out that he was able to just straight up snap the necks of about half of the entire world population
so much about this chapter is just walking the line between absurdist comedy and abject horror, but there is something just so … viscerally disturbing about the mental image of John literally just eating dirt as he consumes the soul of the Earth
THIS is where the Barbie comparison comes in??? this?! John modelled a body for the remains of the soul of the partially-absorbed soul of the earth after BARBIE?!! talk about taking Barbieheimer to a whole new level
‘I drank them in, and it wasn’t enough’ someone better at comedy than me has probably made a very Hungry Caterpillar joke about this chapter
‘You and I went full fucking Hungry Caterpillar’ DUDE. ok i stg i made the Hungry Caterpillar annotation immediately before i read like the next page and saw this
‘I picked you to change [...] I still love you’ well, there’s some form of answer about how John actually got his necromancy in the first place. there’s something so awful about being a human being given powers you just straight up can’t really comprehend by a being so much bigger than you out of love
the message reads ‘THE/TOWER/HAS/REACTIVAT’. at this point i can’t really think of anything else it could say other than ‘reactivated’. and given this is the chapter where John describes himself as becoming God, there’s something very poetic about the chapter heading being John 1:20, in which John the Baptist confesses that he isn’t the Messiah
#lemon natalia reads the locked tomb#the locked tomb#tlt#the locked tomb liveblog#nona the ninth#it took me a good two weeks to realise i'd written corona instead of kiriona

notes on cristabel oct
here's all the relevant info on cristabel i took note of during my tlt reread, in one place!
you can find the rest of the posts in this project here!
CRISTABEL OCT
titles:
Mercymorn’s cavalier, first gen, founded the eighth (with Mercy)
name meaning: in latin the meaning of the name Cristabel is: beautiful christian/follower of christ
notes from harrow the ninth:
The reason Mercy is the Saint of Joy (htn. pg. 177)
Mercy won't talk about her to Harrow, even though John thinks she would, and that her name would upset Augustine (htn. pg. 177)
Augustine doesn't mind talking about her though, and says: "A total delight. Effervescent. Kind to animals and children. A master of the sword. Did not have the intellect you'd ordinarily find in a sandwich or an orange, and was a sickening twerp into the bargain. The Eighth House will never see her like again." (htn. pg. 177)
“‘You know what I feel… you know I don't think she was the best influence on Alfred… you know I think they brought out the worst in each other, and I don’t think you disagree.’ God said, ‘They were very similar people.’ ‘No,’ said Augustine. ‘They weren’t, John. She was a fanatic and an idiot- yes, she was, Mercy- and he… was a man who regretted he wasn't. It took surprisingly little to lead my brother astray.’” - Augustine and John, discussing whatever happened between Cristabel and Alfred (double suicide, maybe?) (htn. pg. 274)
Augustine hated her for sure, but he’s ok with pretending he didn’t for dios apate reasons (htn. pg. 279)
"Cristabel always said I was tidy." - Mercymorn (htn. pg. 410)
"you picked the wrong man to enter a suicide pact with. I hate 'em. Cristabel might have undone all my good work with Alfred, but here comes the reckoning." - Augustine (htn. pg. 487)
notes from nona the ninth:
"The only other people I put through that damn trial were Mercy and Cris, because only Cris didn't mind being trepanned on the regular."- Pyrrha, about her and G1deon's trial at Canaan house (ntn. pg. 84)
Was Mercy's nun best friend pre-resurrection (ntn. pg. 128)
"I was worried I was going to get the Antichrist bit from her too, but she was just like: stop doing this! Read your Bible! This was Christ's whole problem! I was like, What are you talking about, Jesus cured the lepers and everyone was all, Hooray, thanks man. M-'s nun was all, Are you kidding, Christ never said no and never asked anyone to pay and got everyone to pay way too much attention and brought the heat down on everybody, Christ didn't keep to office hours, she said. Don't do that." (ntn. pg. 190)
“Me in my bedroom with a nun and a migraine, her thinking that if she pushed me enough we’d instantiate the Trinity and we’d all be saved.” (ntn. pg. 399)
“Eventually it was the nun who changed things. She knocked on my door and said very nicely, John, how are you doing? And I said, Not great, honestly. She said, John, how close are you to finding the soul? And I said, I can’t, Sister, It’s too big. I don’t understand why it’s so huge. I can’t find the soul inside the body, I don’t know where to look. I don’t know what I’m doing. She prayed over me, and then she went away for the longest five minutes of my life. [...] Then the nun came back and knocked on my door and said, John, I think I have it. I know you’re very scared right now, but I’m going to help you. Please let me in. He said: I let her in. She’d brought P-’s gun. [...] She just smiled at me. She said, John, don’t misunderstand. I want to help you. I truly believe that in our most terrible hours we don’t instinctively reach out to God; we push ourselves away from Him. Don’t feel bad for not rising heroically to the occasion right now, Fear doesn’t help us achieve a state of grace; it deafens the heart. John, I truly believe you can save everyone. So concentrate, please. She said, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for our sinners, now and at the hour of our death. And she shot herself.” (ntn. Pg. 404)

Do you think chase actually is capable of having a healthy romantic relationship (pre or post cameron)? Any time he wants a romantic relationship, it's always in the most ridiculous circumstances (a nun, a mentally fucked up coworker). He only pursues women he knows won't work out.
I mean………kinda?
First of all, Chase has a running thing where he's a lil bit of a Romantic Idealist. He almost cancels his wedding because Cameron has "normal doubts" (that she stresses have no factor on her love or desire to marry him), because he thinks that's unreasonable. He meets a nun on a massive almost-died rebound, and falls in love. Cameron complains he has a naive view of love. Cameron!!
I'd also argue that, as much as we love to make fun of our girl, I don't know if Chase saw her as mentally fucked up. He knows she's struggling with her dead husband, but on the whole the two get along well, they are friends, he thinks she's kind of annoying and that it's weird she has a crush on House, but he thinks she's a good person. A caring person. Is that a bit of naive romantic idealism? Probably! But Cameron doesn't admit to her insanity, and Chase has a long history (House) of accepting (House) insanity at face value (House). I really think he probably thought of her as his nice, hot, slightly annoying colleague. He respects her! She wants to sleep with him! Win-win!
Of course, because he's deeply fucked up and needy and has this idealized idea that Love Will Be Perfect And Fix Me, he does kind of set himself up to fail. To Chase's credit, he and Cameron do have a fairly healthy romantic relationship for a couple years there, and he actually seems to be a pretty good boyfriend! He's insecure of House, but besides that? They both work insane hours and spend all their free time together with no issues. He's able to be very patient with Cameron's dead husband issues.
Take the episode where they get engaged. Cameron asks Chase for carte blanche "I'm delaying our vacation and you can't ask why." He isn't thrilled, but he accepts. No questions asked. Trusts her. After two days have passed, he's getting worried, but when he confronts her it's not you lied to me or you're cheating; he tells her he needs to know what's going on now, he gives her a chance to explain. She refuses, and he digs up his spine to dump her. That's pretty good! Good job with boundaries and trusting your partner despite your insecurities!
I'm not trying to make it seem like Chase is the perfect boyfriend and their relationship problems are all Cameron's (although the writing being in her POV doesn't help that). We see, for example, that Chase avoids problems hard (the drawer situation, d i b a l a), that he holds things in and avoids and can't or won't rely on Cameron for support. But overall, he seems to manage to be a fairly Good Boyfriend. I think he could manage a Healthy Romantic Relationship!
What I'm not convinced about if Chase really wants one. I mean, his idealistic love at first sight habits aside. You're not wrong that he attaches to people (like the nun, if not Cameron) he knows he doesn't have a future with. We also never hear of him having any real relationships before or after his divorce: he dated the S&M banker, but that was "years ago," and that's it. We see him flirt and later sleep with women, and honestly every bit of it is portrayed as perfectly polite and nice and consensual — he's not a sleazy playboy, he seems to be on good terms with all his one night stands. He could very easily have a relationship if he wanted, but he… doesn't.
Which could be from any number of things. I don't think it's that Cameron broke him or anything. Chase is a bit standoffish, actually. He's the only one of the old team to never reach out to the new kids in S4; he doesn't like Masters at all, he doesn't like Park and is aloof around Adams. He doesn't open up to people, he's very private. We're used to seeing him in the first few seasons around people he knows and (minus maybe Foreman) likes, but unless he's specifically putting on a charming act to get laid (and we know from All In and the wedding it's very much a charming act), he's actually… kind of reserved. We joke about Cameron picking him to sleep with, but it's probably not a coincidence that he fell for the one woman in his life he was sort of friends with, that he later tried to do the same with 13. Chase doesn't trust people, struggles to open up beyond schmoozing, doesn't have many friends or relationships outside work. I think he could have a healthy relationship, but I don't know if he'd look for one instead of hoping it fell into his lap.

So I know John wasn't in a great place after the whole nun with a gun and touching the screaming soul of the earth thing.
He said, I just kind of stood there and watched it happen, I think.
In a crisis people don't always react as they might normally.
I don’t know what happened to them. This part gets a little weird, you know? Like I dreamed it. I remember P— behind a barricade … not dead yet … telling me, John, run.
He may genuinely not remember. Perhaps it's all a blur. His brain can't or won't allow him to recall.
They shot A— right in front of us … hauled me out … M— said, Take John alive. He’s worth more to you alive. And they shot her.
But he watches all his friends die and emerges unscathed. His narrative jumps right from M-'s death to him outside, hearing the earth scream and feeling P die, destroying everything.
But there's clearly something we're not party to in between. What happened in that kitchen, with A- and M- dead on the floor and John presumably restrained and at gunpoint by his former devotees?
Did they shoot him? Even then, could he not die? Or did staring down the barrel of a gun finally snap John out of his dreamlike state? Did he stop the cultists hearts, like the half of the world he brags about ending 'clean' before the bombs could get them?
But we've seen John's response to one of his followers trying to destroy him before: visceral and brutal and gratuitous.
Is that why he doesn't tell that part of the story?

Quarterfinals Match 2
M—'s Nun/Cristabel Oct (The Locked Tomb) vs Sister Beatrice (Warrior Nun)
Art of M—'s Nun by @franzias-cave
Sister Beatrice is a secret Demon-Fighting Warrior Nun of the Order of the Cruciform Sword.
Sister Beatrice
No propaganda submitted.

Round 1 - Side B
John Gaius art cred @exmakina
Propaganda below ⬇️
book quote from the chapters where he's relating how he got necromantic powers and people freaked out!! this is pre-apocalypse and resurrection so it's implied he took a lot of inspiration from this incident . He said, Then we took off. Thread after thread on message board after message board. People wanting proof. People asking what the fuck it meant. People talking about the LUCIFER telescope and saying we were aliens. People calling me the Antichrist, which was a trip. People writing up these long posts on how the trick was done, how I got the meat into the pie. Was I fake? Was I real? If I was real, what did it mean? Suddenly there were hundreds of people, all there at our front door. They came in caravans, they were sleeping in their cars or putting up tents. A hell of a lot of them had flown out internationally. He said, Some of them wanted to see the miracle. Some of them wanted my help, like, Oh, you’re the magical death man, can you do something about my body? Can you fix my fibromyalgia? Thing was, I could. That surprised me. I could take out their tumours. I could fix their macular degeneration. Big damage was easy, unless they’d actually lost the limb or whatever. Couldn’t grow those back. But I spent hours and hours a day playing Jesus. That was nice, those were some of the nicest hours I got to spend. He said, But when you’re doing the whole Go, my child, your knee cartilage is fixed, you’re going to get a lot of visitors. I had to turn people away because I had to eat, I had to sleep, even though I didn’t want to. M— had brought in her best friend, the nun, and I was worried I was going to get the Antichrist bit from her too, but she was just like: stop doing this! Read your Bible! This was Christ’s whole problem! I was like, What are you talking about, Jesus cured the lepers and everyone was all, Hooray, thanks man. M—’s nun was all, Are you kidding, Christ never said no and never asked anyone to pay and got way too much attention and brought the heat down on everybody. Christ didn’t keep to office hours, she said. Don’t do that. He said, So we limited Jesus stuff to one hour a day, and I always had to eat breakfast. But by then the whole world was on our doorstep.
look this is kind of weird but he is the only survivor after nuclear bombs destroy the earth and he has weird necromancy powers so he revives his friends and a few other people to be his subjects and basically makes himself a god to them. there's a lot of layers since he's literally the only character in the entire series who remembers the world before and has a concept of the religion he's copying for his own. he treats the other characters like toys he can push around for his own amusement and everything is a joke but he does this world-weary act that somehow gets the reader to kind of feel for him even when he's being atrocious. and he's the only one who remembers memes. which is a torture all of its own.
I said "yes" but to be more clear: he was canonically Catholic when he was still mortal, but that was 10,000 years ago and he kind of killed everybody on the planet. Just slightly. Some of them got better. Now he's the Emperor Undying and his empire is very Catholic-coded.
Frank
He was in training to become a priest and! Fun fact! Is second generation immigrant!

AITA for feeling betrayed?
I (M,mid 40's) have a wonderful wife S (F, late 30's) whom i've been with since she was in high school. Her sister, L (same age) is a nun from one of those orders that manage hospitals and such? So like nun + doctor at once. I couldn't stand her when she was a teen but i don't really care anymore. S and I have three kids together (triplets, two M and one F, barely adult).
My daughter recently came forward to reveal that after investigation, her brothers and her had discovered they had been adopted. Their real mom? L, who, again, is a nun. (that's also the reason she gave away her children at birth and hid the truth from everyone). The father? this shithead I never could stand from back in high school (well he was my wife's generation not mine but we still evolved in the same social circles for a while)
But what really hurt me was the fact my wife didn't feel like she could trust me with the truth. Ever since it's been revealed, I've been avoiding my children (well, they're not my children are they? + i've been feeding them all this time and playing with them and stuff and they weren't even mine? biggest scam ever) and giving the cold shoulder on my wife. I've left the house to go sleep on a friend's couch. Since we work together, and i'm her boss, i've been giving her harder and more work because i don't want her to have the time to see me or chat with me, and when she does try to, i'm avoiding her.
Someone told me that i was an AH and that if i treated them all like that after realizing they weren't my kids then S was right not to tell me, but I think we wouldn't have had this problem if she hadn't hidden that from me in the first place. + her niece/daughter died just after revealing the truth, in a landslide, so everyone expects me to mourn her like she was my daughter but she literally... isn't???
So AITA for reacting like that?
Edit: stop saying my 25 yo self had beef with a pair of teens or that I'm disgusting for dating my future wife when she was still in high school! That's not part of the problem here!
Edit n°2: obviously some of y'all in the notes know my ex so you really can't be objective.

Fic Writer 2023 Review
I got this from @jaelijn, who generously tagged me - 30 questions about my fic writing through this year.
I hope for a better 2024 for all of us.
What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?
I wrote the first three chapters - well, I can hardly say "wrote" - of a fandom fusion - Blake's 7 scripts with MAS*H characters replacing them. To find them funny - even to know what's going on - you would have to be simultaneously a B7 fan and a MASH fan. Judging by the response on AO3, I would say there are about four such. Maybe less. I probably won't finish it - though anything's possible - and I doubt very much if I'll do anything like that again. The problem was that it was not very creative, but even so, it took up a fair amongt of time.
2. How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!)
I wrote about 211,000 words of All We Know - pretty steadily through the year. I was writing the September 1962 section last January, and I'm writing the April 1963 section now. I'm publishing chronologically, so the section I'm working on now will be posted in April 2024 - after being proofread, edited, beta-read, edited, and so on.
I also completed three MASH stories - Crabapple Cove, Major Heart, Under the Apple Tree, and one Star Trek story, Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. M*A*S*H works in progress include Rosary, Nurse Doctor, MirrorMASH, and another strange crossover, Buffy the Vampire Slayer And Her Gay Foster Dads.
And there's Gray-Eyes, which is something else again.
3. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?
All We Know is easily the longest story I've ever written. I found that I can hold a story that length inside of my head and my heart, and keep writing it - and be confident I'll finish it. I found, too, that I do a lot of my writing inside my head before I sit down and stare at the screen. This last I always knew, I suppose, but now I really know it.
4. What piece of media inspired you the most?
Well, M*A*S*H, of course. Some lovely soul managed to upload All The MASH Episodes to the Internet Archive in such a way that they went unnoticed for over a year. (They are now gone- helpful people on the very public Mash subreddit started posting links to them, and whaddya know, once declared publicly, they're gone.)
I also watched some few episodes of E.R., most of the first episode of AfterMASH, a couple of episodes of Trapper John M.D., a specific episode of Sports Night, and I read Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar and Kathy Hulme's The Nun's Story, among other relevant material.
5. What fandom(s) did you write for this year?
M*A*S*H. Star Trek. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Blake's 7, a little.
6. What ship(s) captured your heart?
Hawkeye/Mulcahy. Over, and over, and over again. Also, because they're so very sweet together, Sam Pak/Sidney Freedman.
7. What character(s) captured your heart?
Well, besides Francis Mulcahy and Hawkeye Pierce, 2023 was the year I got to like Trapper very much indeed, as I wrote him in October and in December. I saw a very old fanvid, Trapper Never Got To Say Goodbye, and watched a bunch of good Trapper episodes, and - I just got to like him. I also invented/discovered in my heart several newly adorable people: Sam Colquhoun and his daughter Barbara, Martine LeClerc, Pauline Morley and her partner Thea Schwartz and their friend Nadine Royer, Loretta Bradford, Doctor Jerome White and Doctor Aaron Elharar, Sarah Pargeter Pierce and her 12-year-old daughter Mary, Sister Maria Angelica and Sister Raymond, and of course Cathryn Jamieson.
8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year?
No. Well, yes: I gave Margaret Houlihan the best possible husband I could imagine for her. I like Sam Colquhoun.
9. What fic meant the most to you to write?
At the time? Gray-Eyes. Ongoing through the whole year: All We Know.
10. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
Crabapple Cove. I got the idea and wrote it and giggled most of my way through writing it.
11. What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?
Well, besides Gray-Eyes, I only finished four stories this year, plus some bits of tumblrfic: Crabapple Cove, Major Heart, Under the Apple Tree, and Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. They were all very satisfying to finish.
12. What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it?
MirrorMASH. I have got to a point in that story where I know how it ends, and yet I am really struggling to write that ending - because when it's done, I shall never write MirrorHawkeye again.
But there was an idea for a story I thought of - "AfterMASH, only like the Golden Girls, Max and Charles and Francis sharing a house…" - and Honoria of course - and I wrote the opener for it, and then realised that I didn't see a way to write any more of it. I could see it in my mind's eye as an endlessly enjoyable TV series - but to write another word of it felt like climbing up the Cliffs of Insanity with Fezzik on my back and Inigo on his shoulders. It was like contemplating a land war in Asia. I just gave up.
13. What fic was the easiest to write?
Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. I wrote it at a writer's workshop at an online K/S con, and the story just unpacked itself into dialogue.
14. What were your shortest and longest fics this year?
Kirk and Spock's First Kiss is the shortest - a perfect drabble of 100 words. All We Know is the longest - 261,000 words in the current document, 143,314 words published on AO3.
15. Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023
I'm very pleased with M*A*S*H goes to Pride - thinking through what each of our surviving friends from MASH 4077th would do at the world's first Pride March in New York City in 1970, and whether I think they are LGBT or ally or neither.
16. What were you go-to writing songs?
I was writing the first draft of Christmas in Maine (just posted on Christmas Day) in the middle of a really, really hot August (for Scotland), and I played a list of Christmas carols over and over. I was then writing a chapter from Sister Maria Angelica's point of view and I made a playlist of Christian religious music. Otherwise, usually Leonard Cohen, Janis Ian, Willie Nelson, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, k. d. lang, and so on.
17. What were your go-to writing snacks?
Cashew nuts.
18. What was the hardest fic to title?
Well - All We Know. I'd been calling it "Virtues and Sins" til May, til I realised that if I was going to post the opening chapter in two months time, I really, really had to think of a proper title.
19. Share your favorite opening line
""What do you pray for?" Hawkeye asks: not every time, but often. And when he doesn't ask, he looks: he stares at Mulcahy's rosary sometimes as if he hated it."
20. Share your favorite ending line
"First and foremost: Francis J. P. Mulcahy, formerly chaplain 4077th MASH: without you, this book would not have been written, and without you, I would not have been here to tell it."
21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue
"Doctor Pierce - debauched him?" "It does seem unlikely, doesn't it?" Charles said. "But then whatever else Pierce lacked, it was not persistence or audacity. Good God, did he know the Irishman could write like this? How?"
22. Share an excerpt from your favorite scene
After a moment, Mulcahy laughed. He sounded more tired than amused. "All right," he said. "Should I move this chair?" He got up. Hawkeye caught him by the arm as he was about the pick up his own chair. "Let me." he said. "I know just where it has to be." He moved the chair around, where the light from the central lamp would be falling at the right angle on Mulcahy's head, and waved Mulcahy to sit down again. All Hawkeye had time for, that morning, was to check that there was no indication of a concussion, and no broken bones. He meant to give Mulcahy a haircut, but he wanted to check his scalp for cuts or bruises. "And what can I do for you, sir? Pompadour, bouffant, some stylish Victory rolls?" Hawkeye was gently combing Mulcahy's hair out with his fingers. "Perhaps a little scalp massage?"
23. Share the final version of a sentence or paragraph you struggled with. What about it was challenging? Are you happy with how it turned out?
Winchester folded his hands in front of him. He looked calmer. He also looked pompous, and embarrassed. "It appears I owe you an apology." "Thank you," Mulcahy said, after a moment's effort. "I didn't intend to say anything to upset you. I'm sorry. Is Hawkeye all right?"
It may not look very difficult, but the whole passage of Charles Emerson Winchester and Francis Mulcahy talking in Charles's study in December (in All We Know) was hugely difficult and very painful to rewrite and rewrite and rewrite. I was so hugely on Francis's side that I was having difficulty seeing Charles's side. I am very happy with how it eventually turned out. Jakrar is a wonderful person to work through a story with.
24. What’s something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
While writing the final September section of All We Know, back in February, I realised something about Charles Emerson Winchester's son, Charles Emerson Winchester Jr, that I genuinely had not realised previously, and while it didn't change the story much, it did affect it. (Our Charles's father and grandfather are dead at the time All We Know opens, so CEW III has lost his ordinal number and his son CEW is Junior.)
25. What did you use to write? (e.g. writing programs, paper & pen, etc.)
I use LibreOffice on a Windows 10 desktop. I can and do write on my laptop if I have to, but my favourite place to write is at my desk in the little room with the window that looks out only on the sky, facing the wall. I take notes on Notepad.
26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
"Please don't worry," Mulcahy said. "We can find our own way out."
(You will find out why, next year.)
27. Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic?
No.
28. How did you recharge between fics?
What is this "between fics" you speak of?
29. If this were an awards show, who would you thank?
I would thank my demonic proofreader Jakrar, who is enabling me to keep writing this story in the best demonic style, Ajay, who has been my closest fannish friend for getting on for forty years, and @rescue-ram whose fabulous pro-Trapper comments (and fic) make me very, very happy. Also, for ideas presented to me in 2022 and 2023 that I stole without conscience and used ruthlessly in my own words in 2023: FaustianSlip for Not A Second Time, @allcanonisrelative for Every time, I think of you, @yeats-infection for What the Thunder Said, and also Crystalrose and @topshelf2112-blog for their very different but quite illuminating takes on Charles Emerson Winchester in particular and his relationship with Hawkeye Pierce, which was not something I'd thought much about before I started planning All We Know.
30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?
I want to finish All We Know and Rosary and Nurse Doctor and MirrorMASH and I would quite like to write a few more episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's gay foster dads. And I look forward to getting more ideas for something new.
