“P-please! Please . . . n-no,” you sputtered out, hands held up instinctively in surrender as you backed away.
The large man just continued to stare at you. The alley is dark, barely lit from either end by the street lights. Dark enough that you almost ran into him. You backed away from him immediately, more embarrassed than scared. You can see he’s in all black, perfect camouflage to melt into pitch-black alcoves and back doors. That’s not what scared you, though. He could have been taking the same shortcut as you, or minding his own business, not that you cared now. It’s the oversized knife in his hand that has your heart racing.
“I didn’t mean to- I’ll leave! I’m leaving! Please just-” you try to bargain as you back farther and farther away from him. He continued to stare at you, broad shoulders hunched, face hidden in the shadow of his hood. When he makes no move to follow you, you allow yourself to think you’ll be safe. Just one more weird encounter to add to your list since moving to the city.
You relax your arms to your sides with a sigh. Your eyes are still on the man, just in case he decides to try anything. He doesn’t. He’s still standing where you ran into him, large size menacing enough to push you away without a single action or word. You’re just about to turn on your heels and run the fuck out of there (and all the way home, the long way) when a strong arm suddenly braces across your chest, pinning your arms uselessly to your side.
“Well, wouldjae lookit this now?” the man behind you said, his northern accented voice full of excitement.
Your mouth opened to scream, but his other hand was quick to seal over your mouth. His fingers press insistently into your jaw, not too hard but enough. A warning. His hand turned your head up to face him, strangely wanting you to see your attacker and all of his distinguishing features: his blue eyes, high cheekbones, the mohawk, and a mouth turned up in a cruel, elfin smile. You try to kick and wiggle away, but he, like the other man, is too strong. He effortlessly picked you up with just one arm, making you stand on your tip-toes, splayed open on the tops of his boots, pinned to his chest.
“Lively lil’ sprite, ain’t she Ghost?” he said to the other man.
As if he’s been activated, he began to move down the alley. His hulking, black-clad form was a terrifying thing to see in motion. Before you can even think to struggle again, he’s right in front of you, sandwiching you between their bodies. He towers over you and the man holding you. Good lord, you think. The knife you’d only caught a glimpse of before is right in front of you now. He held it casually in one hand, black gloved fingers dancing on the grip, making the cruel length of it bounce. The dull metal blade caught the weak light of the street lamp, winking at you.
He, Ghost, pressed the flat of his blade to your outer thigh, right below the hem of your skirt. You shiver against the cold metal, only your thin tights separating it from your skin.
“Yeah,” he answered, voice deep and rough as he slid the knife up your hip, not caring that your skirt was brought up with it.
You whine behind the man’s hand as Ghost carefully pivoted the knife under your skirt to trail along the elastic band at the top of your tights. You squeezed your eyes shut when you felt the knife stop. If they were going to kill you, it would happen right now. You know it. Ghost's other hand grips at your waist, thumb pressing up and under your shirt.
“Move yer hand, Soap,” Ghost instructed, flipping the blade of the knife around to face him before pulling against your skirt. The fabric doesn’t stand a chance against the sharp steel. With a barely audible riiip, it fell to the ground between your and Soap’s feet. “Wanna hear her.”
“Only if she’ll be gooood,” Soap cooed, sing-song sweet as he tips your head to press his mouth to your head. Just the sound of his voice sends you trembling. His thick fingers on your mouth splay open just a little. “Scream ‘n, well . . .” he said softly into your hair, the threat hanging as open as the blade stroking the center seam of your tights.
It’s the barest of stimulation, and, given the situation, it should not be arousing you. The hardness of the metal is nothing like your toys at home. Even fingers and real body parts have never had the same unforgiving press like the weapon in his hand. Still, you feel your slick cooling against your core now that you’re exposed to the night air. As the tip of his blade draws upward, catching the delicate knit of elastic, it ripples and whirs. When it paused over your clit you let out a little sigh. You thought it would be too soft for either of them to hear, but they did.
Ghost stopped, a surprised huff falling from his mouth, like he can’t believe what he’s heard. Soap groaned behind you. He dropped his hand from your face. Instead, he drew you tighter to his chest, squeezing your breasts with both his muscled arms.
“Hear that Ghost?” Soap asked, nuzzling his face down to your ear.
With a flick of his blade, Ghost slashed open the front of your tights, exposing your soaked panties.
“Sure did,” he responded.
With another quick flick of his hand, Ghost flipped the large knife so that he could grip it by the blade. Now wielding the handle, he brought the warm grip up to rest against the gusset of your panties. You jumped at the sudden feeling, feeling a blush spread across your face. How embarrassing, you thought. Two strange men were having their way with you in an alleyway of all places, and you were enjoying it. You had to be sick, truly not right in the head. You bit your lip to prevent yourself from letting any other noises come out. You couldn’t let them know how this was really making you feel.
The grip on your waist tightened as Ghost began to saw the handle back and forth across the lace of your panties. Your slick had already soaked the fabric, leaving almost no friction in his cruel movements. You whined behind your teeth when he pulled the knife back, letting the blunt end of the grip draw up through your covered folds, bumping your clit as he pulled away.
You watched, stomach dropping, as he brought the handle up to his masked face. He gave the handle an audible sniff. He hummed behind the skull-print balaclava, eyes falling closed in pleasure, before pressing it to Soap’s mouth.
“Wet,” he said, low and simple, to the other man. You managed to turn your head up in time to see Soap stick out his tongue. He licked a fat stripe of your juices along the handle as his own saliva dripped from his mouth. “Think she like it,” he added, pulling the knife away before sliding it back into whatever hidden place he carried it.
“Think she likes us,” Soap sighed, eyes half closed as he pressed a kiss to your forehead. He squeezed you in another lung-compressing hug, forcing a squeak from you. “Comm’on Si,” he said turning to look at Ghost with large, begging eyes. “Let’s keep this one. Just this once. Please?”
Ghost sighed in annoyance, but something in your gut knew it was just for show.
“Olright,” he said gruffly. “Just this once.”

Okay, I have a theory. I think I know how Niko is going to be rescued in S2 of Dead Boy Detectives
Tumblr media
--------
I don't know if the #DeadBoyDetectives writing team did some research on Canadian folklore before they came over to film and that somewhat became some sort of source in their writing to add some extra elements to the story; but bet they did because there 𝘐𝘚 a Canadian Inuit legend that 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 could connect to the open ending of Episode 8: 'The Case of the Hungry Snake'
And please do correct me if I’m wrong: According to the Canadian Constitution there are 3 primary groups of Indigenous people. These being the Inuit, the Métis and the First Nations. Each of them having their own legends and fair amount of local stories to share. The Inuit are mostly located on the Northern regions of Canada. The Métis live amongst the Metropolitan areas while the First Nations are situated on the Northwestern territories.
I’m going to focus on a very particular folklore tale from the Northern territories of the Inuit here, which revolves around whistling at night. Out of all the world-wide folklore tales about night time whistling I find this one to be the least scary. This Inuit legend says that if you whistle at night time you will risk calling the spirits of the Northern Lights to come down and swipe you up to carry you elsewhere into the sky. And 𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘚 is where I think that Canadian Folklore connects with Dead Boy Detectives and Niko’s potential rescue in S2. They leave us with the image of Niko sitting inside an igloo right by the Dandelion Sprites. And we get to see the Northern Lights shining 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 right above them.
Tumblr media
The Northern Lights could by the sky’s path for the boys to connect with wherever Niko’s at (this being the Neitherlands in the comics).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the comics, we see Charles going into the Neitherlands to help Rosa. And in order to achieve this he enters into a half-living, half-dead state by merging back with his bones. I highly doubt that Netflix will take this route if Netflix!Charles is the one ending up going after Niko to parallel his comic version. I think that if they do go with the parallels, they will achieve this by linking in the Inuit folklore. The boys will probably be adventuring out at night time and Charles will start whistling. It’s at this point in which he will probably end up being swiped up and end up somewhere nearby where Niko’s potentially at.
I know that the bear talisman is important and it must have some sort of key part to play. If it belonged to Mick's shop then, there must be a good use to it. I just can't exactly pinpoint 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵. To finish this thread, I want to link a poem written by Kate Tuthill titled: "Labrador in Winter". (which I'm guessing refers to the Aurora Borealis that happen strongly in Labrador Newfoundland).
Tumblr media
I couldn't find the full poem but only pieces of it

Names for every sprite (canon and not) - Homestuck
After this post (link), I started thinking about names for every sprite (prototyped Kernelsprites) that isn't simply their names smashed together. You can totally disagree with me :) I'm fine with it.
Yes, I will also explain my thought process and the names' meanings.
Note: I love using common words as names, but there will be other options as well :)
Note2: I find translations and meanings on google; of course I don't know all the languages of the world. So if I fuck-up some names, pardon :( (I can't fuck-up italian names cuz I'm italian tho lolz).
Note3: Not everyone has 2 names, it's hard :c
Note4: Many characters miss, and I WANT to make a second part!!! So don't worry too much about it (but you can totally contribute if you want :) )
Note5: No ship tagged cuz it's not a ship list lolz, but you can consider it like that if you want :3
Long post
Canon:
* Davepetasprite^2 = Paws, Hunter
>Paws: cuz i said so (scientific answer).
>Hunter: Both cats and crows are hunter-animals.
* Erisolsprite = Selvhad, Jabez
>Selvhad: "Self-hatred" in Danish.
>Jabez: Hebrew name, meaning "born in pain".
* Fefetasprite = Harcsa, Nyna
>Harcsa: Means Catfish in Hungarian.
>Nyna: Means "enclosure of fish" in Babylonian, but it sounds kind of like Nya/Nyan too (onomatopoeia for cats in japanese). Also, niña in spanish translate to little girl (which is cute).
Non-canon, random order:
* Johnrosesprite = Spring, Aurora
>Spring: When there's a lot of sun but breeze as well.
>Aurora: Girl-name (so perfect for Junerosesprite); an Aurora in italian also refers to Northern Lights, which are formed through "solar winds" (at least that's how we call them).
^* Rosejadesprite = Spring (it's perfect here too!!), Wisteria
>Spring: There is SUN, the FLOWERS blossom!!!
>Wisteria: Purple flower that is toxic to cats and dogs (and horses, if you care).
* Aradavesprite = Jikan, Horatia/o
>Jikan: Means Time in Japanese.
>Horatia/o: Latin names that means Timekeeper (or Hour, Time, Season). Horatia is feminine while Horatio is masculine, I imagine them simply switch from day to day.
* Jadekansprite (Jade+Kanaya) = Lotus, Zhade
>Lotus: Frogs often use Lotus leaves (alternative to frog leaves, called "common plantain" lol).
>Zhade: French name that means "precious stone". It's Jade in french, basically.
* Johnluxsprite = Netsky, Cloud
>Netsky: It's a PC virus. I choose it because of its name. Obvious reasons.
>Cloud: Another word for name srr, but John=Wind/Sky, Sollux=PC, Cloud=The thing on the sky & The App(s) (there are many).
* Solkatsprite (/Katluxsprite) = Downup, Moros
>Downup: One of the names of a powerful virus, which locks all accesses to infected advices and that permits to others to control the device from distance. It mostly uses fake anti-virus programs to spread - like "scareware" (it was used as a war weapon too).
>Moros: In Greek means "Doom"/"Impending Doom", but it also looks like moron so of course I had to include it.
* Rosekansprite = Rosemary, Ambrosia
>Rosemary: Yes, their ship name. But it simply fits!!
>Ambrosia: It's the Gods' food; Ambrosia is the *pollen* that Gods drink to stay immortal.
* Calliejadesprite = Titan, Oxalis
>Titan: Could be just me flashing like crazy, but anyways the Titans where the children of Heaven (Calliope, a Cherubin) and Earth (Jade, who saved Earth + plants + green + oh my god).
>Oxalis: It's a flower that looks like a candy cane.
* Davejadesprite = Saros
>Saros: A period of about 18 years between repetitions of solar and lunar eclipses.
* Calliroxysprite = Mojito
>Mojito: It's a "candy alcoholic drink", made with white rum, sugar, *lime juice*, soda water, and mint.
* Aratavsprite = Cornelius/Cornelia
>Cornelius/Cornelia: Means "horn" in Latin :) Cornelius=masculine, Cornelia=feminine.
* Nepquiusprite = Witten, Kamala
>Witten: Masculin Germanic name that means "Pale person" (also "Blonde" but ignore that part).
>Kamala: Hawaiian femminine name that means both "Lotus" and "pale red".
* Vriskansprite = Kyanite
>Kyanite: Blue-Green gemstone that has healing properties (allegedly), useful for low blood pressure, relief from physical pain, as well as a mind-calmer for trauma-recovery.

Danny knew that he wasn't supposed to follow the wisps, but when you're a child, lost and alone in the forest, you don't have much of a choice.
---
I took a small break from @phicphight but I'm back with a fill for @jackdaw-sprite! The prompt I used will be at the bottom.
There were lots and lots of rules that Danny needed to follow; don't try and use the stove by yourself, don't wander into the lab without supervision, always wear his welding mask when helping his mom or dad with their work, and most importantly of all, do not, under any circumstances, follow the will o' wisps.
His parents had spent a very long time hammering that rule into his head, ever since he was a baby. "They may look friendly," his mom would say, as they cuddled on a sofa watching Brave . "It may seem like they're trying to help her. But they are not. If they hadn't appeared, than none of this would've happened in the first place."
"They're going to be beautiful," his dad had said, while hammering a sheet of metal into the shape he needed. Danny was standing on the stool next to him, a significantly smaller, less effective hammer clasped between his tiny hands. "They might even be the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. But that's a lie. They just want to trick you, and take you away from us. You can't trust them, just like you can't trust any ghost. Do you understand me, Danno?"
Danny had nodded, and his dad had ruffled his hair just like he always did. "You're such a smart kid, you know that? I wish I'd had half the brains when I was five!"
Now, lost deep enough in the forest that Danny couldn't see the sky, Danny didn't feel all that smart.
He hadn't meant to wander off; the rest of his family was still somewhere in the park, setting up the picnic blanket and basket for lunch. Jazz had been playing hide and seek with him, but knowing her, she was using his absence to read the book she’d brought. That was okay; as long as Danny hid well, they’d all have to find him eventually.
Danny had thought hiding in the trees would've been a good idea; he’d be able to see everyone, but they wouldn’t see him. There was the added bonus of being able to climb a tree, which was always a plus. He'd needed to go a few trees deep to find a good one he could climb. By then, he'd seen a flower, a lovely soft purple color that he thought would match his mom's eyes. But if he got his mom a flower, he had to get his dad one too, cause that was only fair, and there was a pretty yellow one only a little further in...
The next thing he knew, he'd been stumbling around the trees, tripping over protruding roots and dead logs that could've been there for centuries. He had no idea which way he'd come from, or which way led back to the park, and all he really wanted to do was sit down and cry.
His bottom lip had just started to quiver when the will o' wisp first appeared.
His father had been right; it was beautiful, a kaleidoscope of colors all mushed into one creature, constantly shifting and flickering in the air, as if someone had taken a chunk of the northern lights and left it right here, in a random park in Illinois just for him to look at.
Danny recognized it instantly. He should’ve looked away; he knew what the rule was. Do not, under any circumstances, follow the will o' wisps. But...
Danny glanced back up at the sky, completely covered by the canopy above him. He couldn't tell if the sun was starting to set or not. He had no way of knowing just how close to, or even how far past lunch time it really was, but by the growling of his stomach, he was fairly certain it had been a little while at least.
Surely it was better to follow the wisp than sit here and starve, right? It wasn't like they could lead him into any more danger than he was already in.
Danny took one, hesitant step towards the wisp. It stayed exactly where it was, circling through a dozen different colors. Danny took another step.
It did not disappear when he got close, like it did in the movies. It hovered inches in front of his face, close enough that if he just stretched his hand forward, he would be able to touch it. This close, he could see that he'd been wrong to compare it to the northern lights; those were probably beautiful, sure, but it didn't hold a candle to this.
It was like peering through water at the bottom of a pond, if the only thing on the other side was a rainbow. It rippled and flowed from one vivid color into the next, constantly changing and shifting and yet never once was it muddied. The temptation was too strong, and Danny couldn’t help but reach out. It was only then, just as his fingers were about to brush against the top of whatever it had instead of a head, that it disappeared, reappearing a few feet away.
Danny didn't hesitate this time. He was off as fast as his little legs could carry him, running towards the wisp. This time, the roots did not catch his feet, the weeds did not scratch his legs, and the logs did not break his stride.
He chased the wisp through the woods with reckless abandon, running as fast as he possibly could. Danny needed to touch that wisp, needed to catch it between his hands like a lightning bug. He didn't know why, he just knew he needed to know. He needed to know how it felt beneath his fingers.
He was so focused on the will o' wisp that he didn't notice when the ground beneath him became more level, when the sunlight streamed through the leaves in larger gaps. He didn't even notice that he'd emerged out of the forest until the wisp disappeared for the last time, and he couldn't find where it had reappeared.
Jazz grabbed a hold of his arm, and the memory of the will o' wisp was knocked out of his head all at once.
"There you are!" she said, dragging Danny over to where the picnic blanket had been laid out. "Mom, I found him!"
His mom and dad rushed over to him, pulling him into a hug. "We've been worried sick about you, kiddo!" his dad said, pulling away to look at his face. "We've been calling your name for fifteen minutes now!"
"You must've wandered pretty far into the forest, huh?" his mom said with a smile and a laugh. "What were you doing in there?"
Danny looked back at the woods. He hoped to see the wisp among the trees, one last glimpse of the beautiful, cascading colors. All he saw was the browns and greens the forest always had.
"I was climbing trees," he lied.
He was quiet for the rest of the day. His parents never bothered to ask why.
--
Danny was eight when he next saw the wisps. He'd almost forgotten about them entirely, so many years had gone by. He probably would have, if his parents warnings didn’t serve as near constant reminders.
He was supposed to be in class, but he wasn’t. Dash had been picking on him again, and the teacher had looked the other way, just like she always did. That was normal. Most days, Danny dealt with it.
Unlike most days, however, Danny didn't have Tucker to help distract him; his friend was home sick with some kind of stomach bug, so for this day and probably the following week, Danny was going to be all by himself.
Danny thought his solution made perfect sense. He’d waited for the teacher and Dash to turn their attention away, and slipped out into the hallway. He knew he wasn't supposed to be wandering around without permission, but it was probably fine. Dash wasn't supposed to be insulting him and his parents like that, at least not according to the signs on the walls everywhere, so Danny deserved a little bit of rule breaking here and there. It was only fair.
This staircase went to the roof, supposedly, but since he didn't have the key, and neither did any of the other staff as far as he knew, it was pretty much just a dead end. This worked perfectly for Danny's purposes; no one would come up here for any reason, which meant he had as much time as he wanted. At least, until someone realized he was gone, but that probably wouldn’t be for a while.
Now the problem was what he was going to do. He hadn’t thought to grab his backpack before sneaking away, so he didn’t have all of the random goodies he’d accumulated over the past few months. He didn’t have any homework or studying that he could do, not without his worksheets, and even if he did, he probably wouldn’t; that was something Jazz would do, and Jazz was boring.
Danny dug through the pockets of his jacket and jeans and came out with two halves of a purple crayon, a small container of extra pencil lead for a mechanical pencil, and a form he was supposed to give to his parents last week that he’d forgotten about.
It looked like he would be drawing.
He was halfway into a doodle of some kind of space monster eating a planet when he saw the light out of the corner of his eye. At first, he'd thought it was the door opening; the light was soft and natural, like sunlight would be, but that didn't make any sense; no one had come up the stairs, Danny was sure of it, and there was no way anyone was on the roof; they’d need to climb the side of the school, which was way too much work.
It was once he looked up that he recognized it: a will o' wisp, hovering above the stairs, just out of reach.
The crayon fell out of his hand. It was just as beautiful as he remembered it being, just as ethereal, and completely out of place with the bleak surroundings of the elementary school staircase.
Danny didn't bother packing up his things. He left his drawing unfinished on the floor, the pencil lead spread out against the tile. He climbed to his feet as if in a trance, hand outstretched, just like he remembered doing in the forest three years ago. Just like it had done then, it let Danny get close enough to almost touch it, close enough that he could almost feel it against his finger tips, and then it was gone, floating above the landing just below him.
He hesitated. The first time he saw the wisps, he'd been a dumb, scared, lost child, who didn't have any other options. It was different this time; Danny was older, and smarter, and most importantly, he wasn't
It was weird, for the will o' wisp to appear here, of all places. In all of the stories Danny had heard, either from books or movies or from his parents, the wisps had always appeared to people who were lost, or in danger, and (depending on who was telling the story) they would help or hinder whatever traveler happened to stumble across them. Danny wasn't in danger or lost, unless you counted Dash being mean, but if that was the case, the wisps would've appeared years ago.
Everything about the situation was wrong. Danny knew that it was all wrong, and that he should park his butt back on the floor and finish his doodle. He also knew that if he didn't investigate now, than he would never get the chance to investigate again.
The doodle could wait; it wasn't that good anyway.
With the initial shock and awe of seeing it gone, Danny approached the wisp cautiously, making sure to watch his step. The wisp stayed in place, glinting in the artificial school lights just as it had in the sunlight three years before. It was only once Danny had landed solidly on the landing, with his hand outstretched to the wisp, that it vanished, reappearing on the next landing down.
It brought Danny down to the bottom floor before disappearing. That was weird; It hadn't brought him anywhere, but it was definitely gone. Unless...
Danny pushed the door separating the stairs and the hallway open just a crack, then breathed a sigh of relief. The wisp danced in the hallway, just a few doors down from where he currently was. With a quick look glance for any wondering teachers, Danny was out in the hallway, chasing after the wisp again.
The chase didn't last much longer. He'd barely gone halfway down the hallway when it disappeared for good this time, leaving Danny standing right outside his own class's door.
"But-" Danny started, talking to empty air. He shook his head instead of continuing his question; he wouldn't have gotten an answer, even if the wisp was still here.
He opened the door to the classroom and slipped back amidst the students. As far as he could tell, nobody noticed he was missing.
The intercom crackled to life barely two minutes later. "Attention teachers and students. There is an active shooter inside of the building. This is not a drill. Stay calm and commence lock down procedures. I repeat, this is not a drill."
The class immediately panicked.
(Later that night, safely in a chair at home, Danny would overhear the news on the television. "It had been lucky that the shooter hadn't injured anyone, as a children's drawing was found next to the point of entry," the reporter was saying. "In the future, the Casper Elementary School will make certain that the roof access door is locked from the inside, hopefully preventing an issue like this from arising again.")
---
Fires were no rare occasion at Fentonworks. Between their positively abysmal cooking skills, the amount of faulty inventions that were tested in the laboratory, and the Fen-Toaster which was probably a violation of the Geneva conventions, the Fenton's were single-handedly keeping the fire hydrant companies in business. The fires were never a big deal, hardly more than a scorch mark on the ground or wall. They were always caught early, and proper fire safety had been ingrained into Jazz and Danny since before they could walk.
This fire was different. It hadn't been caught early, if the smoke that woke Danny up was anything to go off of, and it certainly wasn't something that could be tamed by a standard fire extinguisher.
Danny held the back of his hand up to his door. It wasn't hot; that was a good sign.
The hallway wasn't on fire, at least not that Danny could see, but he couldn't see much through the thick smoke that clogged the air. He fumbled his way towards the staircase, eyes squinted against the burn.
"Danny!" It was his mother's voice, raspy and punctuated with a cough.
He turned back around towards their bedroom, and could just barely make out the silhouette of both her and his father. Before he knew it, they had reached him, pulling him into a quick hug.
"We need to get Jazz and get out of here!" his dad said.
"Right here," Jazz said, her blurry figure joining the rest of them.
"Good. Good." His mother's relief was palpable. "We need to get going."
She was right. They didn't have much time, and the fire was only going to grow worse as time went on. They needed to get out of Fentonworks, and fast. The front door was the easy answer; they could all get there with their eyes closed. Danny should've been following her down the stairs, as fast as his aching lungs could carry him. Instead, he found himself reaching out and stopping her descent.
"We can't go that way." He was certain of it. If the door was clear, than the colorful light, distorting through the smoke in the air, wouldn't be at the end of the hallway.
"Danny, we-"
He didn't wait for an answer, taking off towards the end of the hallway. The wisp was there to help , he was certain of it, just like it had helped him those times when he was younger. They'd proved that they were here to help, and despite his parents' warning, Danny trusted them.
His family was close behind, calling his name between coughs, but he didn't turn around.
The wisp lead him into the bathroom, which was surprisingly smoke free. With the wisp hovering in the window as it was, it wasn't hard to see why; the window had been left open, and the door closed. The rest of the family funneled into the room while Danny approached the window. Peering out, he could see the reason the wisp must have brought them here; his parents' old mattress, just recently replaced for a new, upgraded one, lay on the ground directly beneath the window. It wouldn't be the comfiest fall in the world, but they wouldn't get hurt. Probably.
Danny didn't think about it. He blocked out the protests of his parents and sister, heaving himself up over the windowsill and out into the clean, cool air. The fall was quick, not enough time for him to regret the decision even as his stomach flipped. The mattress did not completely cushion his fall - he'd probably be dealing with bruises for the next week, maybe more - but he was able to roll off the mattress and onto his feet without an issue.
The wisp was gone when he looked back up at the bathroom window, replaced with the worried faces of his family. He tried to shout up at them, but all he managed to do was trigger a coughing fit. Instead, he waved, beckoning them to follow. They seemed to understand. Jazz came down first, letting out a ear piercing shriek on her way down. She was grabbing onto Danny's shoulders mere seconds after she'd landed.
"What were you thinking?" she cried, shaking him back and forth. "You can't just run off like that! You could've gotten yourself killed!"
"But we're fine," Danny argued.
"And we would've been just as fine if we had gone downstairs! And you wouldn't have given all of us a heart attack and made us jump out of the window!"
"We can talk about this later." His mother had joined the conversation, and his father had just landed on the mattress with a big puff. "And we will be talking about this later-" she narrowed a glare at Danny "-but right now we need to make sure the fire departments been called. You two run over to the Pallay's house to borrow their phone, we'll see if the Kennywood's will let us."
Danny and Jazz nodded their head, before taking off around the corner. The moment they were out of earshot, Jazz started again. "What were you thinking?"
He didn't have an answer. What was he supposed to say, that he followed the wisp? Jazz wouldn't understand; she didn't believe in ghosts at all, and even if she did, she wouldn't trust them, not like Danny did. Luckily, he didn't need an answer.
The contorted, melted in mess of a front door was answer enough.
---
"It's a bummer that it doesn't work," Tucker said, making himself comfortable on the one empty spot of workbench. "Your parents have been working on it for like. Forever."
"Yeah they're not happy," Danny said, staring at the shell of what should've been a portal. "Jazz had to basically drag them out of the house today, they haven't left at all this week."
"I don't blame them," Sam said, raising the camera around her neck to her eye. "At least it looks cool, right?"
"I guess so," Danny agreed.
Sam hummed. "It doesn't photograph well."
"I can try and get another light on?" Danny offered.
Sam shook her head. "That's not the problem. It's just too... static. I think it'd look nicer with one of you in front of it."
"Not it!" Tucker called quickly, lifting his hand to his nose. "Too slow!"
Danny, who was midway through the same motion, lowered his hand back down with a sigh. "Fine, I'll do it. But I'm putting on my suit! It's still a dangerous machine, even if it doesn't work right."
Sam nodded while Danny got into the suit "I think it'll look better anyway. More thematic than jeans and a t-shirt. Though, maybe without the sticker of your dad's face."
Danny's face heated up as she removed the sticker. "I didn't put it there."
"Yeah, yeah, get in front of the portal," Sam said.
Danny listened, standing just beyond the lip of the metal. A chill traveled down his spine; there was something... disconcerting about it all. He knew what was actually behind him; he knew the portal almost as well as his parents did, years and years of talks about it over dinner, family time in the lab spilling over blueprints that should've been far above his comprehension. He knew that, when it lay dormant and dead like this, it was nothing more than metal and machinery, just like every other thing in the lab.
And yet he could feel it's exhale, cold and sour on the back of his neck. He could see stray wires on the corners of his vision, and he couldn't help but see them as teeth, closing in around him. This was the portal to the afterlife, supposed to bridge the gap between life and death itself. Maybe his parents were wrong; maybe it did work, and they just couldn't see it. Maybe he was balanced on the edge of death itself, and one more step, one slip of his foot, and he'd go falling backwards into whatever endless nothingness the afterlife had for a living soul.
Sam's camera clicked, chasing away to foreboding feeling in an instant. She grabbed the polaroid, shaking it out, before squinting at it. "Something's still missing."
Tucker leaned over her shoulder. "Yeah, it still feels kinda bland."
"Maybe you should go into it more?" Sam asked, glancing up at Danny, then back down at the picture.
"I don't know..." Danny said. "I don't think its safe."
"Come on, it'll be fine," Sam said dismissively. "Your parents said its not working. And besides, its a ghost portal. Don't you want to see what's on the other side?"
He wanted to say no. He wanted to walk away, take off his stupid jumpsuit, and go back upstairs to watch whatever stupid show Tucker had found them earlier today. Her words had hit a little to close to home, a little to close to that nagging fear he'd felt before, and he spared one glance behind him, just to assuage his nerves before shutting her down.
The wisp danced in the maw of the portal, brilliant, blinding, dazzling colors reflecting off the sheer metal surface of its mechanical innards, and Danny's worries washed away. "Yeah," he heard himself say. "It would be pretty cool."
The portal wasn't deep, so when the wisp disappeared, it didn't go far. It hovered alongside the portal wall, so very close. He took one step further, and then another, and was already in touching distance of the wisp. Danny reached out his hand slowly, cautiously, expecting for it to disappear just like always.
It didn't. It was silky and cool under Danny's hand, and yet it seemed to float away like water or mist, allowing him to put his hand further and further in. He let out a disbelieving laugh that echoed through the tunnel, and he almost thought he could hear the wisp laugh with him, a tinkling of bells, mischievous and soft, echoing just behind his own. The wisp seemed oddly happy to have Danny's hand through its not quite face, it's colors shifting swifter and more vibrantly than ever before. With reckless joy, Danny pushed his hand in further.
His hand met metal with a soft click, and the wisp disappeared, bringing its colorful, kaleidoscope lights with it. Danny was plunged into darkness before his world went green.
--
Prompts: jackdawsprite - Danny knows better than to follow the will o' the wisps. But the rules are different now, aren't they?

Paul M Smith photography - Very rare red sprites
Yesterday evening, I started off chasing sprites from northern Oklahoma. Avoiding the clouds, I ended up in the middle of a wind farm- not ideal for a night shoot as there are a lot of red flashing lights all around from the turbines. But I found this old skeleton barn in the darkness and figured I could avoid most of the wind turbine lights if I kept the camera low enough and angled it right. After several hours of waiting, an uptick in Kansas storm activity had me wading through knee-deep roadside grass to line this shot up. I was rewarded with a handful of sprites including a massive and unique jellyfish sprite below the strong airglow bands. It looks very unusual up close as the airglow bands seem to warp the color and intensity of the sprite. These headless sprite elements are unusual and the sheer size and volume of the excitation suggest to me a very powerful lightning bolt caused it. Likely in the range of 4-5 times the strength of an average bolt.
good story...should we be convinced? Idunno

Centennial Celebration
Book 2: A Century of Circumstance
[1] [2] [3] [Poll 1]
Chapter 4: A Fork in the Road
Steel hesitates, sparing a glance at Vern.
"Are you gonna be okay?"
Vern gives him a practiced smile, "yeah, I'll umm... be fine."
"..what about the winter sprite?"
"I um... don't think he would try anything with umm.. others around."
".. if you say so.."
Vern nods and gives a small wave to everyone, "I'll umm... meet you all for um.. food after. Text me the ummm... place you pick!"
"We'll meet at Folia's!!"
With a small smile, Vern turns to navigate the growing crowd. Steel watches him for a few moments. He can hear Folia attempting to reign Shirley in and the general excitement from the others. These are... Vern's friends, not his. He tucks a strand of hair behind his ear.
"It's not fun being the extra wheel."
Green flames briefly flash around his eye. Turning to the left, he stares at Folia for a moment. She grins as amusement flickers in her gaze.
"Vern can show you around just as well as we can, if you're fine waiting."
He raises a brow, "..uh yeah-"
"-did he tell you about Victor?"
"I don't know who that is."
"The winter sprite," she glances at the others for a moment, "it's not my place to speak if Vern hasn't."
"So that's his name.." he mutters.
"The meeting hall is straight down the northern street," she sighs, mischief lighting her eyes, "if you're questioning Vern's words, trust your gut."
Folia returns to Shirley's side and threads their fingers together. He hesitates for only a moment. Ensuring everyone else is distracted, he quickly slips away.
Steel scans the area as he goes. Even with the people, the small chatter only briefly fills the quiet. The air felt lighter in his lungs. A chill breeze contrasts the warmth from the sun.
Flowing ivy hair finally catches his eye. A familiar soft giggle reaches him easily among the other voices. As he gets closer, he notices Vern finishing a transaction for a pair of keychains. Odd.. he doesn't recognize the keys Vern attaches them to. They were not for the dorms. Shoving that thought aside, he steps closer as Vern puts the keys in a small pouch.
"Hey, Vern~" he grins a little as Vern jumps.
"O-oh... umm... hello..." Vern's eyes are wide. He didn't expect to be followed, "I thought you were um... going with the others..."
"Nah~ didn't wanna be a third wheel," he casually winks, "I thought you were going to a meeting?"
He pretends to not notice the slight dusting of pink on Vern's cheeks. "I um... something caught my eye.."
"Sure~ I won't pry," he follows Vern as they start down the street. The sprite is quiet, but occasionally greets someone as they go.
"U-umm... c-can I um... ask you something," Vern lightly scratches his bandages.
He shrugs, "sure, what do you wanna ask?"
"W-well... ummmm....f-fourth year is um... coming up a-and umm..."
Shit. It's almost next school year.
"...it um... gave me a thought about ummm.. after graduation.."
No, no, no. Nope!
"And.. I ummm... was um.. think-"
"-shut up," he avoids his friend's shocked expression. Vern's lip trembles slightly as he bites it for a moment.
Steel's voice softens, "Vern, I uh-"
"-I'm sorry!"
Wait, no.
"I umm... it's this building," a pained smile is on his face, "I'll um... it won't be long!"
".. yeah.. alright."
Vern quickly steps up to the entrance. The sprite stops long enough to give Steel a small wave before going inside. He waits until he can't see Vern through the glass door. Turning, he finds a bench. A small bird lands on his head, chirping as its pet.

Chapter 5A: Of Men and Fae
Vern hates these meetings. It's always the same. He reports that he's returned, then he sits in on whatever they have yet to agree on. Sitting in the original musty building, at the same oak table, with men that are... well, time has not been kind. At least he could finally see his uncle.
There wasn't much time to talk before the others started in. Their concerns were always the same, and continue to push boundaries. He had to deny them more land than necessary, again. As always, he urged them to trade with the neighboring towns.
"What of the progress on your agreement?"
Vern tilts his head, "I presume you mean the one I have with Victor?"
"Naturally."
"What difference would my answer make," his gaze sharpens.
"Victor has assured us that should his end be met first, the mother mountain line would be... secured"
Vern's stomach churns. Oh, that's how they're playing. "Regardless of the results, the humans of this valley have nothing to fear."
"That does not-"
"-Vern has watched over this valley since he and our fathers founded this town," his uncle cuts in. His voice is soft, yet firm, "yet you question his judgement now?"
Vern takes a careful breath. Chatter around the table fills the room. He glances at the clock, with a barely concealed frown.
"If there's nothing left, aside from my personal affairs, I have other obligations to attend to," he searches for his uncle. Gracing the elderly man with a nod, he exits the room. They could catch up later. Right now, he had a half-baked apology to finish.
He stops short in the hall. Charcoal eyes that contrast snowy locks meet him. The grin the other being gives him sends a shiver down his spine.
"Vern~ how've you been, sweetheart?"
"I was umm.. fine until I saw you."
He chuckles, "aw, did you miss me that much?"
"I missed you like I um.. miss a thorn in my side,"  Vern tries to move passed him, but the other grabs his arm.
"C'mon.. that's no way to talk with your-"
"-let go, Victor.."
"Mm.. no~ we need to have a little chat."
Vern takes a steadying breath, "fine."
He barely suppresses a shudder as Victor wraps an arm around his waist. Following the winter sprite, his eyes widen as bit.
"Um... why the back door?"
"I'm thinking about a nice stroll on my mountain," he hums, "just the two of us~"
Vern looks back to the front door. Reluctantly, he let's the other sprite lead the way.

CS Chapter 28: Lore Guide!
Or rather, character guide! I dropped a LOT of names and while yes it was fun and to be silly it also was. Crystal Springs FACTS lol. Anyway, I figured I'd compile them all in a list for easy reference for my me and also your yous if you all want! :)
Potential blorbos below the cut!!
The Assembly
Each province of Crystal Springs has a Governor and two Lieutenants. The Governors are up for office every fifty years; they select their Lieutenants from the leaders of the different villages/hamlets/towns etc. in their provinces every 10-50 years.
The capitol city also has a governor, and along with Mother Nature these are the people who make up the Assembly, the governing body of CS as a whole (so like, Parliament or whatever).
Here is who each governor is:
Governor Iden -> Governor of the Eastern Province (Autumn)
Governor Zeki -> Governor of the Southern Province (Summer)
Governor Arilla -> Governor of the Northern Province (Winter)
Governor Lorel -> Governor of the Western Province (Spring)
Governor Blaise -> Governor of the Capitol, Crystal Springs.
Iden
Panics very easily. Usually has to have a big old panic before getting to business, but does get down to business
His current Lieutenants, Clove and Enid, are very good at being rational while hearing him out and bringing him back down to Earth
Iden is deffs some kind of "spooky" magibean; maybe a drow?
Zeki
BIG and FRIENDLY
Sprite-esque; I think he has Earth powers? Chucks stones and such
He has charisma levels to give Blaise a run for his money
Quick to help always 24/7
ESPECIALLY when Iden is involved given his uh. Overthinking tendencies
Arilla
She is ANCIENT and ALL KNOWING and WISE
by which I mean, she has the sight tm. She can see into the future in limited ways and has a general sense of things going well or not
so when she says "they'll manage" 95% of the time she's right
I think she is some kind of celestial magibean (god or demigod or something akin to that)
Lorel
She is spacey as fuck
Nobody is sure how she got elected, least of all herself
may have been a joke?? but she somehow managed to win?? and they keep reelecting her???
She is very like. If you think of a creature that frolics in a meadow all day and gathers flowers and that sort of thing, that's her
somehow she manages an entire province but is so airy that it's hard to understand how she even manages
trusts Arilla's judgment SO much
probably a fairy, or like. a dnd druid. or maybe a faun.
They don't have last names as an oversight on my part lmao. I always have people call Blaise "Governor Frost" but the other governors go by their first name and I had so much fun finding names that surnames did not occur to me until AFTER lmao. So, to make my life easy, the governors all go by first names amongst the assembly lol. I'll give them surnames one day!
Idk who the other Lieutenants are, but I do know that:
Zeki's are just as friendly and helpful as him
Arilla's one constant is a big friendly giant who is like a bodyguard at times, and the other one is usually a very shady mother fucker, bc she picks them on PURPOSE to keep her eyes on them.
Make sure they're not doing. Shenanigans (derogatory) or tomfoolery (derogatory)
She either reforms them or takes care of them, then on comes the next set! The Winter Province is the most chill with the least political issues. This is why.
She may threaten people in line using Winter
Winter does not mind this
Lorel's lieutenants are always more on it than she is, given how scatterbrained and airy she is at times, and a bit unpredictable. They keep her on track and organized but will also hang out and gather flowers with her in a meadow~
Those Who Imprisoned The Twin Prince Pyros
Blaise
Cheri, Grand Witch of the Dark Arts
Gwen, Grand Witch of the Light Arts
Mother Nature
Godrick
Novus
Indigo
Bartholomule
Peggy
Pepper
Birch
Kharl
Right so we know lots about Blaise and Mother Nature. They didn't play any particular roles in the whole thing, they just made the final decision and organized the set-up.
Blaise was also the one who initially sealed Pyros in the stone thing with Winter! But the seasons were like "do what you need to do with this fucker, we just got back from being POW'S so we're. we're gonna go. y'know. process and such" so they didn't really play much of a role the first time around!
The second time around they did bc Winter was on the WARPATH about it and all three seasons tend to over protect her lol. Here's what everyone else did:
Godrick:
Was the typical brash soldier/fighter type. Noticed Pyros starting to crack the stone prison. Had a penchant for magical arts (may have been a warlock, may have been a sorcerer, he never clarified and tended to rely on sorcerer magic the most tho people swear they saw him wizarding about) and put down the first seal that kept Pyros in the stonework until they could get the castle grounds ready. He also lead the quelling of rebellion forces as the rest of the gang took care of Pyros Status: Deceased (in Rosehaven)
Novus
They were the brains/logistics of the operation. They essentially drafted the plans and figured out who would need to do what to get this to work in such a way that the people would be safe. Cheri was very right; Novus would know what to do and would've been quite speedy about it--they didn't leave things hanging for long. You want shit done, Novus was your magibean! Status: Deceased (in Rosehaven)
Indigo
Artificer/tinkerer. Very excited about magical tinkering; plays a huge role in magical tech advancements and melding their tech with human tech come the 21st century. Has a grinchy laugh but is generally an okay dude! They designed the chains that kept Pyros able to roam about the cabin but unable to leave the grounds, and fortified them in order for the enchantments to be placed in them! Status: Active. Caught in a tinker. May still be tinkering. Has no concept of time.
Bartholomule
Was a shapeshifter who could only shift into a mule, hence the name. He was the one who came up with how to have the chains phase through the castle grounds. This shocked everyone.
Status: Shifted into mule form permanently. Unsure if alive mule or dead mule.
Peggy
Peggy was a kindly older woman who made the enchantment to keep the kitchens well stocked and essentially have the castle be self sustaining, to keep Pyros alive while imprisoned. She was a hospitality whiz--probably a brownie or some other mythological being known for hospitality! Status: deceased (in Rosehaven)
Pepper
Worked with Novus to make the enchantments/seals that kept the chains from breaking/falling off, essentially making them invisible on top of Bartholomule's intangibility bit. Helped the Grand Witches with the force field surrounding the castle. Is a bit too much at times. Gets hexed/jinxed/cursed a lot, sometimes by her own experimenting. Is a sorcerer by trade, chaotic entity by everything else lmao. Status: cursed (stuck in the curse ward. will probably be okay)
Birch
Druid/wise woman! Very in tune with nature. Was the person who made it so that Old Frost Castle, once strengthened and prepped and officially prison'd up for Pyros, would be undiscoverable by anyone looking for it. You wouldn't see it on maps; not in aerial views. It wouldn't appear on anyone's radar. People walking through the forest would not wind up on the castle grounds accidentally. She essentially worked with nature to make this so. Status: Enlightened. Became a Birch tree just south of the Springs.
Kharl
He was the math guy. Wizard. Made sure the sorcery related stuff didn't blow up in anyone's faces (as sorcery was wont to do every so often). Also made sure the various magical bits and bops placed on Pyros and the castle grounds wouldn't decay. Expert in magical decay theory. Was also a bit of a haughty fellow. Cheri thought him a dick and Gwen was wont to agree. Status: Turned into a frog. He knows what he did.
The Grand Witches
Though both Cheri and Gwen had a hand in everything, their main contribution was the force field surrounding the castle and the magical locks on the door. This served as the test set onto them by the previous Grand Witches in order to prove themselves worthy of the titles and take on the responsibilities that came with them. Though they are witches of opposing forces, one of the big parts of their jobs is to work in tandem, so imprisoning the Twin Prince Pyros was as good a test as any to see if they really could work together!
Status: Both are alive and active
And one last lore note: CSGHA stands for "Crystal Springs General Health Association" and they are the magibean medical care guidelines for the most part!

The Northern Lights visual novel is 100% correct in saying it is 18+, despite not having any 18+ content in the game itself. You see, to make the character sprites lightly move (blinking and wagging their tail), the creator chose to make the sprites modular, as in the different body parts are disjointed in the game files' images folder to then be reconnected in the code itself. This wouldn't have changed much in terms of age rating, if only the main model used to attach limbs and outfits wasn't completely naked and exposing the penis.

credit where credit is due, I very much thought Northern Lights would go down the Cleaved route of not having much of unique visual identity via having the same sprite artist as literally the most popular fvn of all time, but! I am pleasently surprised! I think haps leaned just far enough into a different art direction for it to make a difference, I'm not constantly thinking the game desperately wishes it was an echo project product, so that's a definite step up lol. To bad as, a Zoomer™, eighties nostalgia carries literally zero weight to me whatsoever. So like, I'll just check into the next two or three builds to see if there's anything actually super interesting to me, idk. Hasn't actually grabbed me yet, it just managed to clear that one bar lmao

Names for every sprite (canon and not) - Homestuck, pt2
PART 2 OF THIS POST.
Notes:
Note1: I love using common words as names, but there will be other options as well :)
Note2: I find translations and meanings on google; of course I don't know all the languages of the world. So if I fuck-up some names, pardon :( (I can't fuck-up italian names cuz I'm italian tho lolz).
Note3: I will add names to sprites that already had one or more in the other post.
Note4: Many characters miss, and I WANT to make a THIRD part!!! So don't worry too much about it (but you can totally contribute if you want :) ).
Note5: No ship tagged cuz it's not a ship list lolz, but you can consider it like that if you want :3
PLUS, special thanks to @not-someone-who-matters for helping me with some names! I'll put a ❣ next to every name she found <3
CANON SPRITES:
Tavrisprite = Ferox
>❣ Ferox: In Latin it can mean both wild (like the wild animals Tavros likes so much) but also fierce and spirited (like Vriska).
NON-CANON, RANDOM ORDER:
Betakidsprite (John, Jade, Rose, Dave) = Eather
>Eather: One of the classical elements that compose reality, along with Earth (Jade, her passion for gardening), Air (John, his Aspect), Fire (Dave, his land) and Water (Rose, her land).
Davejadesprite = Eonee, Relat, Besselle, Altair
>❣ Eonee: Eon, an undescribable amount of time. With an ee sound at the end, to make it sound like Uni, for universe. >❣ Relat: Short for relativity, as in the theory of relativity, which details the differences between how the speed at which objects move through space affects the way they experience time. >❣ Besselle: From Bessel, the scientist who came up with the term light-year. >Altair: From Greek, it can be translated as the flying one or bird, but it's also the name of the Aquila constellation [perfect name for Davejadesprite^2].
^I already made one name for them in the other post (Saros), but I wasn't satisfied and didn't know what else search/put. So SPECIAL-SPECIAL thanks for this one!
Erifefsprite =
>❣ Poctopi: Hippocampus (the scientific name for seahorses) and Octopi (plural for octopus). Can be shortened to Pocti or Topi*. >❣ Kuanat: From aqua nata, meaning water-born. [I am not sure about this one :)]
*little note I told her too: "Topi" in italian means "Rats" :3 IDK, just to say, it's cute.
Jadejohnsprite = Cielo
>Cielo: It's an italian word (rarely a masculine name), that literally means "Sky" — reason: Sky=John, The clouds or stars (that are in the sky!)=Jade.
Janejohnsprite = Azzurro/a, Brio
>Azzurro/a: Azzurro in Italian literally means Light Blue, it can be used as a name. Azzurro=masculine, Azzurra=femminine.
>Brio: Liveliness or vigour; spirit. [At least in italian:] Brio is something that tingles you, like a breeze up your back.
^Yes, I knew ONE Azzurra in my life :)
Ericrosprite = Cupid, Regulus
>Cupid: I won't explain. >Regulus: A noun that means petty king/ruler, comes from the Latin word for prince.
Aradavesprite = Phoenix
>Phoenix: Crature from Greek Mythology; a bird that is symbol of the birth-death-rebirth cycle. It can also be translated as meaning "Dark Red".
Jadenepsprite = Rasalas, Kuppy
>Rasalas: It's acutally a boy Arabic name, that means the northern (star) of the lion's head. >Kuppy: Funny name I've found that mixes Kitten with Puppy.
Roxyrosesprite = Rosolio, Mami
>Rosolio: Italian liquor that was once reserved to rich people. It's made from roses, and its color is pinkish. >Mami: Mom in Albanian.
Roxysolsprite = Honeysuckle
>Honeysuckle: A flower that is also used to make Honeysuckle Vodka, a cocktail.

wip inspiration tag 🌟
got tagged by @encrucijada
there are A LOT of places of inspiration for my personal writing project roadtrip! and if i had to list them all i’d have pages and pages of bits of inspiration from so many different places but i think i can gather the core wells of inspiration...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
list: the Northern Lights trilogy, the Oh Hellos, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky and Sprited Away
ROADTRIP! : sam, a transmasc youth, and his furry ever-companion soulmate kaid live in sunshine arizona with their new rambunctious friend who moved into the neighboring town a year ago, chelsie who has two furry companions of her own named cosmos and chrysanthemum. high school hell, summer shenanigans, friendships, chaos and fun ensue until a girl named aubry shows up in the middle of the desert following a series of strange occurrences. a week later, the three of them take a short walk and don’t return home. they find themselves in a new world, and, well, quite a few new worlds after that. they need to find a way home and they’re determined that nothing stops them, so they journey into a ever shifting, strange, curious and beautiful multiverse that unfolds before them.
this story is about changes and grappling with them, queerness (trans, lesbian/gay mostly), self discovery and becoming, love, family born into, made and found, faiths, destiny is fake, essentialism is bogus, war is hell, different kinds of trauma, the pace of healing, growing pains, be gay do crime, love for humanity, displacement and belonging, oppression and fighting it, the power in being kind gentle and merciful, and how hugs, hand holding and forehead kisses go a long way. theres a lot more but the hugs are extremely important!
The Oh Hellos
entire arcs in this story have started as seeds planted by me listening to the oh hello’s but especially the albums eurus and the other four winds albums, dear wormwood, and into the deep dark valley. ive got a deep emotional connection to their music and since i found them back in 2019/2020 which happened to be the time i started writing this wip. there are whole albums in my character playlists. they are this music on a certain level. the grip maggie and tyler heath have on me is criminal

daemons, angels and the multiverse concept not only totally ripped completely off from this series but also extremely yassified and hit with a transgenderification beam. transdimensional travel as a metaphor for being trans. a angel fabricating a physical body as a metaphor for being trans. rainbow colored openings to other worlds hint hint nudge gay. answering the age old question “trans people daemons gender what?!” with “lol whatever i have a 4D understanding of gender you wouldn’t get it”. using daemons as a way to talk about queerness, gender etc etc. also us american evengalicalism fuckin sucks, lets talk about that and religious trauma without demonizing “religion” as a whole!! this inspired me to think about the beauty of faiths instead of its ugliest sides but also honor the horrific trauma a certain brand of christianity causes. also what if this multiverse concept was executed better and the story was actually satisfying??
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the sSky (and some other ghibli movies)
okay nausicaä actually inspired a big latter part of roadtrip, mostly its solarpunk elements and focus on ecology, post apocalyptic world and humanity. and insects! castle in the sky is where i got the floating island idea from. some honorable mentions are spirited away, its one of my earliest memories of other world concepts in fiction i remember from when i was a kid, ponyo which is the favorite movie of my character chelsie + some ocean imagery sprinkled here and there and sam loves princess mononoke (this movie helped radicalize me)
Ari and Dante
the slice of life vibes, desert setting but arizona instead of el paso texas, a mexican main character, just taking it easy and being emotionally honest when writing and telling a story is something i learned from benjamin alire sáenz because its one of the first places in literature it really stuck out to me. that you choose your own methods for writing, whatever works for you even if it strays from ‘traditional’ literature structure. realizing a chapter could be 1 paragraph freed me, but now i wish i’d actually let myself apply the guy’s advice. this book had a profound effect on me when i read it at 17, it got me through a lot and its lived inside my head and my soul ever since. rent fuckin free. changed me on a molecular and spiritual level and im so glad it did
honorable mentions: a bunch of different science fiction media, fantasy media, real life locations like arizona, my own state, cartagena columbia, costa rica, peru and about a thousand other places, ecology and the concept of interconnectedness herself, class struggle, queer history, catholic imagery, ‘80s aesthetics, many romance languages, my friends and their many backgrounds, many different cultures, angelology, world history, revenge and spite but also self indulgence and falling in love with writing
