Historical and cultural context is always just that. Context. A framework in which a work has been created.

Historical and cultural context do not obligate anyone to like anything they don't. It can reframe the work somewhat. Doesn't mean anyone has to change their mind over it.

That said, I have no opinion on "Baby it's cold outside".

I do, however have a very visceral reaction to that song that says bullying you for your differences is okay and may only stop when you can be exploited instead.

Yes, I know that Baby It's Cold Outside is supposed to be fun and naughty and flirty. I know the social context in which original listeners heard it. I know the social scripts they were playing with.

But - and here's the kicker - I don't exist in those contexts, and in my context, where the vast majority of people listening to the song don't have that context, it feels fucking gross and creepy and I don't like it. And! No amount of lecturing and hectoring people about what it's really about is going to change that we aren't in the same social context anymore.

Lecturing people about how they're wrong about how they feel about a song because that art doesn't land on them the same way it does on you just makes you look like a smug twat who doesn't get how art works.

"Let people enjoy things" comes with the correlating idea "let people fucking hate things."

And I just didn't like that song before I had to go through the annual ritual of listening to the lectures on why I'm wrong to dislike the song at all.

Now?

Every year, my family watches Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. In the past few years, the tradition has evolved into me trying to get everyone to agree with my theory that Hermey the elf is Trans.

I have been told to shut up many times but it makes so much sense!

All of the guy elves are bald. All the girl elves have blond hair.

But it goes so much deeper than that. Hermey is a was born a toy maker but knows deep down he's supposed to be something else... a dentist. It's a metaphor!!!

It also adds so much to the fact that he's a "misfit." The fact the fact that he doesn't fit in. The other elves exclude him. But he ends up finding a community of others like him.

And he's just so sweet I love him so much
