teen titans art switch gave me whiplash with the new hypersexualization of women and the subsequent knee-jerk impulse to make exuses for it (kory is just an orange woman....but she is very muscular, so that's something, i guess). but then we get to this panel and i can't pretend to not see what i am seeing just to avoid being mad for one tiny second.
Tumblr media
look at their facial expressions. the men have contorted their handsome faces into unhandsome tangles of emotion that are essential to the storytelling nature of comics, but look at the women. look at kory. god forbid they have expressions that betray their personality, thoughts, and larger humanity.

What do you think of Slade and Dick’s relationship ok the comics? Dick somewhat killed his first child, was friends with his second and mentored his third so idk about you but I’d feel like Slade would have some pretty twisted feelings towards him by then even without the whole apprenticeship thing
It's weird? I can't really pin it down because Slade and Dick are kinda everything. They're enemies, allies, friends, as well as mentor and student. Dick is the one that Slade is closest to in the entire family. They're so close that Bruce actually called Dick to ask him for information about Slade.
Tumblr media
Deathstroke (1991) Issue #7
"Dick--I need information. Tell me about Deathstroke. I remembered you fought against him several times...as well as fighting alongside him recently."
Bruce...do you need that calming tea because you're mad at criminals or because you're mad that Dick had dealings with Deathstroke?
Anyways, after Bruce hangs up on Dick, guess who Dick calls?
Tumblr media
Deathstroke (1991) Issue #7
Wintergreen!
Who also lies to Adeline about someone calling Slade because she's mad at him.
Tumblr media
Deathstroke (1991) Issue #7
So Dick and Slade have a tight mutual enemies but also friends relationship. And this was after joey died.
After Grant died, Slade was furious at the Titans and hated them for a while
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The New Teen Titans (1980) Issue #2
He then uses this hate to plan and trap the Titans into the way of a specialized bomb but the titans escape. Afterwards comes the Judas Contract where he tries to kill all of them but fails.
However between Grant's death and the formation of Nightwing in Judas contract there's a very important scene between Dick and Slade. Even though Slade hates the Titans and blames from for Grant's passing, he still respects Dick an incredible amount. A year after Grant dies, Slade seeks out Dick individually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deathstroke (2016) Issue #19
So basically he finds out about Rose and the first thing he does is dump her on Dick. This ties into Dick's comic Renegade era because Dick as Robin has trained Rose when she was a kid in the rights and wrongs and how to be a good person but Slade as usual has the conscience of a goldfish so he changed his mind after he grew a little more separated after Grant's death. He now decided to push Rose into his ways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #112
Instead of morals, he now wants Dick to teach her skills, tactics, and fighting techniques because even at his maddest moments, Slade has always respected Dick.
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #80
The change from Slade asking Dick to teach Rose only his moral to teaching her his everything is a testament to how much Dick has grown from Robin to Nightwing. One of the most formidable villains ever is asking his long time enemy to teach his daughter. That's-there aren't enough words to express the weight of these scenes.
So Slade heavily respects Dick. He actually respects him the most out of the family despite what happened with Grant.
He respects Dick so much he was absolutely furious at Dick that he got himself shot and got amnesia.
How do we know this? It came out against his fight with Batman.
Tumblr media
Batman Secret Files Issue #3
Wait, who's the great man that lost everything?
Tumblr media
Batman Secret Files Issue #3
"You're going to got try and kidnap somebody you think I care about. So get to it. What do you think you can offer me? Why would I say yes?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Secret Files Issue #3
HE'S SO MAD THAT JOKER EXPLOITED HIS CARE FOR DICK AND HE'S SUPER MAD AT DICK AND BRUCE FOR HAVING THE JOKER FORCE HIS HAND.
He got himself involved so he could control the damage without seeming like he cares too much because he has a reputation to upkeep.
Slade really cares about Dick.
That's not to say he doesn't hate Dick at times. When Dick turned his daughter away from him, he got so furious he made a society of supervillains just to bomb Bludhaven. His rage was explosive (haha). He even used Damian to get to Dick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #12
Talia gets it.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #12
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #12
But at this point Dick's just like seriously? screw off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #12
At this point Dick literally doesn't give a shit-he's just so done with everything.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #12
Going back to post Grant's death, Slade still kinda sees himself as a mentor or like an older friend to Dick.
After the JL failed to contain Deathstroke, the Titans had to step in and Slade's thoughts about Dick are so funny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deathstroke (1991) Issue #14
More than hating each other, it's more like Slade is a nuisance to Dick and he really only acts out when he thinks Dick's taken away one of his kids. They have a really long and complex history where their stories are deeply interwoven with each other. Dick has influenced the pivotal moments of Slade's life and Slade has done the same to Dick.
This moment from their team up in the Titans (1999) comic explains their dynamic best
Tumblr media
Titans (1999) Issue #10
Dick keeps all of Slade's stuff to study but treats him with a healthy amount of suspicion while still helping him out and being on opposite sides.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Titans (1999) Issue #10
lol
Dick is sort of responsible for Grant's death, yes, but also Dick is Joey's best friend, Rose's second parent, allies with Wintergree, and helped save Adeline. He's involved with Slade's entire family.
Yeah Slade's feelings toward Dick are pretty confusing but I guess you can think of Slade's relationship with him as Slade's hero confidant. He also feels some sort of responsibility over Dick which is weird. Their history is too tight and closely connected for Slade to ever permanently hate Dick but his bouts of rage mainly come from him feeling betrayed by Dick.
Overall, Slade just wants Dick's attention, and Dick for the most part just wants Slade to stop pestering him.

When are these fucking ghouls gonna leave the poor damned souls that still haunt that broken alone?
I cannot understand the fascination.
It's like somebody making a tourist attraction out of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Fuck off, ghouls! 29 men died. Leave 'em in peace!

oo who are your top dc picks for rapunzel?!! mine are raven from teen titans, wally west, halo and jason todd (in an unhinged way where he leaves the tower to commit murder)
cass cain is my #1 forever dc rapunzel <333 the way she never got to experience the world outside of the narrow view she was shown by the person who raised her, then got a glimpse of the life she wanted and chose to leave said parent and experience it for herself. soooo rapunzel-coded <3 plus the way she believes in the best for everyone and refuses to see people as evil or irredeemable <33333333 theyre the same character to me
also!!! mia dearden!!!!!!! trapped in a life by someone who claims to love her, then some guy (with a goatee) comes along and makes her realize that theres a life outside her "tower" so she fights the person trapping her then leaves to hang out with the guy that saved her :') obviously not a one to one comparison because i am NOT saying that mia & ollie are the same as rapunzel & eugene since. ollie is her dad. but the idea is there
and im giving rose an honorable mention because shes not as much of rapunzel as the other two but if you don't think about it too hard nightwing #112-115 can be tangled with rose as rapunzel, dick as eugene (PLATONICALLY), and slade as gothel 🥰
anyways thats all i have to say but im using this opportunity to go on a new rose tangent
rose can also be eugene-coded. take my hand. sort of an orphan (both technically have alive fathers but their fathers didnt raise them) that turns to a life of crime because they feel like its the only thing they're good at (and in fairness they ARE really good at it) and they like doing it. theyre selfish and kind of an asshole but they have so much love in their hearts and genuinely want to help people but they look out for themselves first. then theyre given a chance to have a family & leave it behind so they do but no one trusts them bc they've hurt everyone around them before even though they've changed now </3 they also cover up every feeling they have by being an asshole and the only people that get to see their actual emotions are the people close to them. then once they show a genuine emotion then the dam is broken and they can never stop
all this to say. cassrose tangled au now please

Dick and I should not be married. We are too young. Neither of us is ready for that kind of commitment. Marriage requires more than just love. Our souls need to be one. And…my life has been one of commitment to others. My father. My world. Even to dick. I need to learn what it is like to do for myself (New titans #112).

I've been meaning to ask. But if i wanted to get a good view on Dick and Slade's relationship what comics would you suggest i read?
To understand where they began, you have to start at The New Teen Titans (1980) and the The New Teen Titans: Judas Contract. The Judas contract is part of Tales of the Teen Titans Comic ( 42-44) but it's more consolidated about the Titans and Slade.
New Teen Titans (1980) Issues #2, 9, 10, 13, 34, 39
Tales of the Teen Titans Issues #42-44, 53, 54, 55

Ultimate Doctor Who Poll Round 1 - Matchup 21
Episode Summaries under the cut
Tumblr media
112: The Return of Doctor Mysterio - Season 9 Christmas Special 2: A young boy, Grant, meets the Doctor one Christmas Eve and follows him to the rooftop where the Doctor is working on a device. He hands Grant a glowing stone to hold, and mistaking it as medicine, Grant swallows it, giving him superpowers.
Years later, after a press conference in New York City, the Doctor and a rogue journalist, Lucy, spy on the leader of the company, and see him trap and kill somebody, replacing their brain with an alien controller. They run, but are caught and held at gunpoint, only to be saved by a superhero, The Ghost, the Doctor recognizes as Grant. After leaving, the Doctor follows Grant to an apartment where he is masquerading as a nanny and is taking care of a baby. The baby's mother, who it turns out is Lucy, returns home and is shocked to see the Doctor.
The Doctor agrees to help Lucy look into the alien organization. She also asks him to arrange a meeting with the Ghost, to which he agrees. The Doctor goes to investigate the organization and discovers that they've built skyscrapers in capital cities around the globe, plus a building in New York City. They've set up the buildings like bomb shelters, and plan to crash an empty spaceship into NYC. When the only thing left standing is their building, all the World Leaders will take shelter at their buildings in their capital, allowing the aliens to replace them.
The Doctor lands aboard the empty spacecraft above the planet, but accidentally triggers the crash sequence early. In NYC, the aliens got to the rooftop where the Ghost and Lucy are having their interview, intending to capture the ghost and turn him as well. He "escapes", then comes back to the rooftop as Grant, holding the baby. The aliens intend to take them all hostage, but are alarmed to see their spaceship crashing.
The Doctor signals Grant and he reveals himself as the Ghost in front of Lucy, stopping the spaceship. The Doctor calls in UNIT to apprehend the aliens, and Grant and Lucy realize their feelings for one another.
Tumblr media
145: Voyage of the Damned - Season 3 Christmas Special: The Doctor lands aboard a spaceship modeled after the Titanic. He meets a waitress named Astrid Peth aboard, who dreams of traveling the stars. The Doctor encounters a glitch when trying to get information from one of the robotic Heavenly Hosts on board. The Doctor joins a brief tour group to Earth, where they find the streets deserted due to people being nervous from attacks on London the past two Christmases.
They return to the ship and the Doctor discovers a power failure and the ships shields being down as a meteor shower is approaching the ships. The meteors hit and the ship is severely damaged, and headed to crash into the Earth, which would cause an extinction level event. The Doctor and several surviving passengers and discover that the Hosts are killing the remaining passengers. The Doctor instructs the passengers to get to the reception deck to transmit an SOS signal, while the Doctor goes to investigate a mystery at the heart of the ship.
He finds and is captured the CEO of the starliner company, who has prolonged his life with cybernetic enhancements. He has been forced out by his board of directors, and plans to crash the ship to ruin his companies reputation by destroying a planet, while he survives in his bunker and retires to luxury. Astrid uses a teleporter to arrive and kills the CEO, and herself in the process. The Doctor assumes authority over the Hosts and have them take him to the bridge, where he saves the ship from crashing and steers it back to space.

"If you want to direct, watch things." -Kenneth Branagh, Pt. III
Ten years ago I gave myself the challenge of watching 52 films in 52 weeks. I called it, "If you want to direct, watch things." My goal was to learn what I liked, why, and to encourage myself to write.
I exceeded my objective and ended my year with 150 films. I learned a little more about myself and what I could accomplish.
Over the years, I have lost motivation for my personal wellbeing. I've been overworked, stressed, depressed, unable to focus - but I'm feeling better now.
So, now I want to do it again. I want to push myself, challenge myself... because I can, because I'm up to it.
Objective: Watch 150 films/television shows. Goal: To know I can put my mind to something and accomplish it. Movie | Short Film | Television Show | Re-watch

I came to the fandom after the manga was already concluded, but how does it feel for people like you who have been in the fandom for a long time to finish the shipping race with your ship ending up as the most plausible one for Levi. Like you must have gone through a lot during the process lol but at the end it must have felt good.
Oh wow.  Did we go through a lot?  Did we ever!  Following the manga realtime was a wild, wild ride, especially after Shiganshina. I’ve already written about the fandom’s reaction to the hell that was the Serum Bowl here. Things did calm down a bit after that, particularly once fans understood that Levi had chosen to save Erwin by allowing him to die, but it was still a turbulent ride.
Despite Yams hinting that Erwin might appear in flashbacks, there was a real fear that Erwin and his legacy would be completely forgotten and written out of the story.  The fact that Hanji mentioned there would be a funeral for Erwin and the fallen soldiers, and then that funeral never happened and we were straight into the time skip and the Marley Arc, only heightened that fear.  I’m still salty about this tbh.
One of the things to remember about the Marley Arc is that it ran for 16 chapters and 11 months passed before we saw the Paradis cast again, apart from two blurry panels of Levi in chapter 93.
Tumblr media
There was a lot of anxiety about what was happening in the interim and how Levi would appear when he returned, particularly after the alarming subproduct of Titan science panel in 93.  Personally I was holding out for Levi to return with long hair and Erwin Smith Flame of Hope Tattooed across his chest. (@seitsen-sarvi kindly obliged.)  Isayama himself played on Levi’s absence by drawing pictures on his blog of Levi promoting a hot spring in his home town because he had nothing better to do.
Tumblr media
Once the Paradis cast returned, an even bigger fear was that Levi would forget his vow to Erwin, and speculation was rife about Levi choosing a new liege.  Those theories were blown out of the water in chapter 112 when Levi finally reiterated his vow to Erwin and we had the first of (several) flashbacks to the crate scene.
Tumblr media
Once it was clear that Levi hadn’t forgotten his vow and that his prime goal was still to kill Zeke, some fans felt that his character had stagnated, that he had become petty, vindictive and driven by revenge, that he needed to “get over” his hatred for Zeke, and that he should grow up and move on.  This particular argument used to drive me up the wall and I remember writing some meta pointing out that Levi wasn’t a teenage shounen protag on a voyage of discovery, he entered the manga as a fully formed character, and a grown ass man, and had remained consistent ever since.
As the denouement of the manga approached, and we had another heartbreaking crate flashback in chapter 136, there was some quite acrimonious debate about whether Levi had sworn his vow to Erwin, or to all the Survey Corps’ fallen soldiers.  Most of this debate focused on points of translation that mostly went right over my head.  Have a look at @tsuki-no-ura's blog where you’ll find a detailed analysis of the translations and many very patient responses to fans.  My take on this particular point was that Levi swore his vow to Erwin, but he swore it on behalf of all the fallen soldiers.
Tumblr media
Another endless point of discourse was whether Levi should live or die.  Some Eruri fans desperately wanted him to die so he could be reunited with Erwin, while other fans were understandably outraged by this suggestion.  Personally I was really torn on this point. Ideally I wanted Levi to survive until the very end of the manga when he would die in a blaze of glory while killing Zeke, and then be reunited with Erwin in the afterlife. I never really thought there was the slightest chance of that happening, so when Hanji got *exactly* the ending that I wished for Levi, I was astonished to say the least.  But I also knew that having done it once, Isayama was unlikely to give the same ending to Levi.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, I think most Eruri shippers were very happy with Levi’s ending; he never forgot Erwin, he remained true to his vow, he killed Zeke, helped to save Humanity (as much as it could be saved), and was rewarded with a final vision of his fallen comrades saluting his sacrifice.  It was beautiful.
Tumblr media
The fact that Levi didn’t join the diplomatic mission to Paradis to negotiate with the Yeagerists, was just the icing on the cake. I love that last image of him living his best life with Gabi, Falco, and the Onyankopon, far away from Pardis and the Yeagerists.
Tumblr media
So yeah, that’s a very, very long winded way of saying, yes, as an Eruri shipper, Levi’s ending did feel good to me.  HOWEVER, I have to add that I’ve never seen shipping as a race to be won or lost. As far as I’m concerned the whole joy of shipping is that you can make your blorbos do whatever the hell you want, regardless of canon.  It really saddens me when some fans seem to spend more time shitting on ships they dislike, rather than creating content for ships that they do like. But at the same time, it also frustrates me when people try to debunk the actual canon story lines.  If you don’t like canon, that’s fine, just ignore it, shipping is all about transformative works after all.
I’m going to give the last word to Isayama, who I think is a lot smarter and more knowing than we sometimes give him credit for.  I know a lot of shippers of all stripes gave a wry smile when they saw this beautiful final panel of Levi with Petra, Hanji and Erwin all front and centre.
Tumblr media
Though I couldn’t help noticing that Erwin is the only one still waiting for their partner in the after life…
