RAINCODE 4KOMA COMIC PROJECT

This is another project that I'm currently working on with @kazinsblog! We adore makoyuma and they're our number one faves.

So we decided to make a little 4koma style side special of Kazin's mini series "The Kanai Ward Case Files"

This intro is the only normal comic in this story.

Prologue: Flu season hits worldwide, and Makoto calls Yuma one day and gives him the warning. Yuma notices his congested voice so he wants to head to to Kanai Ward to check on him. But meanwhile, Yuma is trying his best to hold his cough as he talks on the line. Only to suffer the fit after Makoto hangs up. He isn't well either.

When Yuma arrives in Kanai Tower finding Makoto completely disheveled and passed out at his work desk, he ushers the stuffy CEO to bed. The two were shown pushing themselves while being sick alone. But now that they're together, these stubborn workaholics will finally rest and break from their duties in order to take care of each other. (for the most part anyway)

Of course since I'm involved in this project, they're obviously not going to be doing well... XD But this story is going to be a lot more fun and lighthearted than others I have written. (It's essentially written in a silly sick filler episode of a cartoon kind of vibe) meaning less whump, and more sick comfort and hilarity. There may be a few somewhat whumpy ones here and there (I can't resist) but it won't be as common.

Full Story Summary:

This RainCode fan side story revolves around slice of life comedy 4koma style strips with scenes of Yuma and Makoto being sick together and spending time with each other in Kanai Tower for about a week or two. They both have different halves of cold symptoms, Yuma with throat based, and Makoto with nasal based. (hence the title) Various cute and wacky stuff happen between the two and their bond grows stronger spending this time off together away from their duties as detective and CEO. They may be sick and miserable, but at least they're in it together! What could possibly go wrong?

The comic strips will be drawn by Kazin, but there will be some bonus art that the two of us will work on together (similar to the title which was a collab by us both)

Also, both of us agreed that these strips should be posted on my blog rather than Kazin's. Reason being is that this story is based on illness and my blog is half an illness blog so it makes more sense to share it to mine. You all likely expect this sort of thing from me at this point anyway… XD (I’m also the director so I write the descriptions of them.)

And this series will continue to be ongoing so long as Kazin and I have ideas. (we currently have almost 100 strips planned)

I will update this in separate posts whenever more strips get fully digitally drawn by Kazin whenever she can work on them. With the tag #kanaiwardcasefiles h&h. Some strips will be random, some will be two parters, and some will have a timeline or are connected to others.

We both hope you look forward to this project! There will be a lot of funny and cute moments between these two, so we hope you makoyuma enjoyers are excited!

Also bit of a fun fact: This was inspired by when my mother and I had covid late April 2024. Something similar happened to us, and we each had one cold-like symptom more than the other. (her with coughing and me with congestion) So I thought of this idea for these two!

One of things I like about Zuko and Iroh’s relationship is that while no doubt Iroh is the voice of reason to his traumatized, angry and stubborn nephew, when left unsupervised he can be as much of a disaster as Zuko. And sure, Iroh is a wise man, great tactician and a renowned fighter/soldier but the moment Zuko let uncle out of sight, the man ended:

captured by Earth soldiers because he decided to relax in hot bath and fall asleep fully aware they are on enemy land and Earth Kingdom hates Fire Nation (saved by Zuko)

poisoned himself with the flower he wasn’t sure was edible but still decided to make a tea out of it and then was ready to test his luck with another plant he wasn’t again sure about, to save himself from the first problem (Zuko threw it away before something worse could happen)

betrayed their Fire Nation ethnicity when they pretended to be refugees inside Ba Sing Se city because of course Iroh needed to warm up his cold tea (Zuko immediately called out him on this dangerous stupidity; Jet unfortunately noticed the steam from now hot tea what lead to his and Zuko fight later)

with honorable mention

of Zuko being the voice of reason telling Iroh he can’t take all the pretty shells and other unnecessary stuff because they are carrying their own baggages on their backs now 

and Iroh spending who knows how much money on things that he found on sales even though he was supposed to buy himself only White Lotus pawn (and I’m still not sure if the money was part of Zuko’s ship budget or just Iroh’s own saving).

The thing I love about their dynamic is that yes, uncle Iroh is the voice of reason in the emotional struggles of Zuko (and as much a source of his frustration with all the proverbs), but Zuko too is the voice of reason when it comes down to Iroh indulging himself with things he finds pretty or comforting while totally ignoring the obvious danger or impracticality that would slow them down/burden in their journal. And I really really appreciate that Zuko is not less important to Iroh’s survival & safety than Iroh is to his and that their relationship is not one sided “wise mentor and hot-headed, stubborn student” because they both may drive each other crazy at times, and have different sense of comfort and safety but they will make sure the other is safe as sound as much as possible. And Zuko is not the only one that gets into trouble due to not thinking well about his actions.

Are there any features to him that are always there in the corner of your eyes but which the human mind willingly ignore in order to conserve sanity and willful ignorance? Like he smiles and his teeth are always a little too sharp? Or he doesn’t have a shadow? Or his eyes change color (which I do know you posted about at one point)? His hands are like claws and even though they sometimes look like hands, they aren’t and if you touch them even when they look like hands you’d feel a claw? I know he mostly doesn't care and doesn’t bother to hide everything behind a human facade, but how inhuman are we talking about? 

Okay, it’s already established that his looks are everchanging, including his eyes going through a spectrum of shades during a week. And that he’s not trying too hard at being a convincing mortal. But let’s go through the questions one by one! 

Features that are always there in the corner of your eye? Not exactly. His eyes might appear black if you’re not looking at him directly; they are black still, underneath the disguise, and the corner of your eye is often where you see through the most magic. But that’s so easy to wave away as a play of the light. (And it’s only his eyes that you might be able to see through – they're the windows to the soul after all.) 

Teeth are always a little too sharp? His canines are definitely a bit longer and sharper than could pass as human, falling more in line with other mortal creatures. (And it took him a while to figure out the right amount of teeth; too many and his mouth felt crowded, too few and it looked wrong. And wisdom teeth only made it all the more confusing.) 

Doesn’t have a shadow? He has one, but it flickers. Magic doesn’t cast a shadow by itself, and he is magic, but he has a solid shape, can be touched, so he does block out the sun. Still, his solidity flickers like his looks, leaving his shadow to do the same. It looks like static sometimes, sunshine filtering through him in pinpricks. 

Eyes change colour? Well, we’ve gone over the spectrum of shades and them looking black. They do change colour completely sometimes; he sees a colour he likes and it bleeds into his eyes for a second, before his disguise rights itself. The part of the eye differs, though the pupil and iris happen more often than the sclera. 

Hands are like claws? No, he has always preferred using his teeth where others would use claws. His hands are maybe the most human thing about him. With that said, his nails might draw some attention. He likes the idea of them being coloured but doesn’t understand nail polish, so he simply changes the nail itself. You’d notice if you were to look at them closely, or touch them, that something isn’t right. (He approaches makeup the same way he does nail polish, making it part of his form instead of the addition it’s supposed to be.) 

How inhuman are we talking about? Oh, nothing about him is human, is barely mortal for whatever that means. A shape – a disguise – can only do so much, especially when he barely tries to contain himself. If you open him up, his insides will not look right. He has tried putting muscles and blood veins and lungs the way they should be after looking in books and on operation tables, but he doesn’t bleed red if he bleeds at all, and he doesn’t breathe unless he consciously inhales or exhales. His muscles work right – he likes the burn from overexertion, so he put more thought into it. He has bones; the body doesn’t feel right without them. But nerves? A stomach? Anything else that makes up a body? Magic fills those spaces for him.

The True Identity of Matoba Seiji's sister?

this is something that's been on my mind lately, I may be overthinking this and reading too much into things. I have a crazy theory on my mind so thought I wanna share it before I explode by myself xD

what I have next are from chapters yet to be translated so if you don't wanna be spoiled then don't continue reading :)

before I start I just wanna emphasize all of what I'm gonna say is purely my own theories and ideas, also my Japanese is bad so I might make some mistakes thus if you noticed anything I'd be glad if you can correct me ^^

lastly, I don't know how long this post will turn out to be so sorry in advance ><

-What about Shinobu?

i want to start with this first to clear out the way, of why I don't believe Shinobu to be Seiji's sister. but another twist from Midorikawa-sensei (I mean how many times did she makes us suffer in figuring out the true identity of Seiji's sister for me to trust her easily now)

she started and ended this chapter in a way that makes you believe that Shinobu is THE miss Matoba but is she really ??

Shinobu said "really? thank you I'm glad to hear that"

is that enough to point out to herself and not to someone she knew perhaps? for example, she knew Seiji's sister or work for her so she's happy to hear someone praise her?

I really don't trust her since her deep knowledge of the exorcist world means she's not normal therefore she's in it one way or another but in what form I don't know yet, yup yup even her being Seiji's Sister isn't even 0% but I just find it weird and doesn't add up for now for me ...

I mean she can't even see the Yokai!! (Unless she lied which I doubt) now tell me, is a future leader of the Matoba clan someone who can't see Yokai? we all know what that means for a successor of an exorcist family to lose the sight. plus, if I'm not mistaken, the talk was that Seiji was more powerful than her which's why he was picked over her despite being the youngest so it was not because he was able to see the Yokai unlike her ... in short, his sister should be able to see the Yokai but Shinobu can't!!!

and this important detail by Tanuma's investigation worth taking into note, since if the thief is truly Seiji's sister, then that's NOT Shinobu unless you consider Shinobu having a long-hair xDD

so you see now why I don't believe her to be Seiji's true sister (I have other reasons but we'll come up to it next)

-If not Shinobu then who?

now we're back to square one huh, Midorikawa-sensei sure love to torture us in this arc and tease us to no end while making us suffer (which's why I love you tho ~)

before I point out to who I believe to be his sister I wanna point out to something else so you can see my line of thinking :)

listen, I don't know how or why I thought that other than I followed my intuition since I read too much into Seiji's character while thinking and linking things together (this guy is making me go crazy! I'm so sorry I have nothing better to back me up here so bear with me please ><)

we all know that Seiji doesn't like divination and guess what, I believe the reason of why is that lies with his sister one way or another.

please DON'T ask me why I think so since it's hard to explain without sounding insane xDD

BUT IT'LL MAKE SENSE I PROMISE JUST WAIT FOR IT!!!

I mean this sweet, lovely chapter was in fact a soft set-up for this Miss Matoba arc which thinking about it now let me laugh that Midorikawa-sensei did it to us yet again lol

okay okay, stop this and just tell us who is this Miss Matoba already !!!

now let's review what we believe are hints to Seiji's sister

someone with a blond long hair

someone who should be able to see Yokai but we've yet to know if this person can or can't (meaning someone NOT Shinobu)

Someone who love or do divination (since Seiji hates it)

someone we never get to know their REAL names (again aside from Shinobu)

someone having an interest in anything Yokai related

someone who should be in this arc.

now tell me, does anyone comes to mind maybe ? someone whom for some reason mysteriously disappeared ever since she set foot into the auction perhaps ??

true, I meant her. Kurara or whatever her name is. no matter which way I slice it she just fit everything in my mind so I just can't help but think she is the REAL Miss Matoba. her disappearing ever since she dropped Natsume isn't really helping her case tbh. she also love and do divination which just so fit with my idea that his sister have something to do with divination which's why he isn't a big fan to that ><

and I said it to a friend, I just won't believe who's Seiji's sister till I see them both facing each other so nope I won't fall for Midorikawa-sensei trap AGAIN!!!

I know this might be far-fetched but I just couldn't stop thinking about it since alot was bothering me and I read into many things too much maybe but I HAD to let it out my chest so yup here you have it <3

-Bonus :Ultra small crazy theory

this one is ... ummm... listen... I know Seiji is making me go crazy and this one I just DON'T have any proof to really back it up like him hating divination because of his sister so just take this with grain of salt ... it just ... I WANTED TO JUST SHARE IT SINCE MY FIREND WAS GONNA KILL ME OF HOW CRAZY I AM TO COME UP WITH THIS !!!!

i mean if I said ... Kuro Misa (Black Misa) might refer to two people will you say I'm going crazy? haha ha ha

Seiji is very handsome indeed, but would you describe him as "doll-like beauty" ?? (you are to me at least, don't worry) not with that eyepatch at least, right ? if there's someone whom I would say is a "doll-like beauty." it would be Kurara.

one line hit me as being weird and my mind went "wait!! is it possible?!! what if ...!!!!" ever since I moved with the line of thoughts that Kurara is Seiji's sister ... umm... it's rumors and I know people never really know much about Kuro Misa ... but certain line felt off to me which was "she was beautiful like a doll" when describing Kuro Misa before we know it was actually Seiji's other hidden identity.

Kuro Misa wear a black veil that no one ever saw her face or have any idea what kind of a person she is, so it won't be far-fetched for people not to notice if it's two different person under the veil.

and it didn't help my case that this arc started with Kurara like this ... even Natsume thought she was Kuro Misa ><

this brings me to think that, what if Seiji created Kuro Misa in respond to his sister? so that he can keep an eye on her movement or to at least be in the same circle as her. which's why he picked such a character that is so unlike him since he just hate divination so why bother being known as someone famous of such a thing?? (I swear this man deserve all the respect for all the things he just do to protect his clan but no one ever appreciate it T^T)

Seiji also said that wearing a veil is very helpful since it will help him to recognize the faces of anyone whom tries to come closer to him to uncover his secrets, but what if a hidden/indirect meaning is also that if someone whom thought he was his sister thus come closer to talk to him that would help him recognize his enemies or the people his sister tried to make contact with to let them join her side in her fight against the Matoba clan !!

I know all of this might not make any sense, and as I said this one is just a very crazy theory of mine that won't be true mostly but was fun to think about .. if I hit it close to the truth I'd be very shocked of myself tbh xDD
