"Her wedding dress was a magnificent creation; the outfit was so intricate that it took nearly an hour for Alexandra to dress. Her stockings were of lace, her shoes embroidered and decorated. Over these she wore layers of stiff petticoats. The wide, full skirt of silver brocade opened from the waist down to reveal a second underskirt of silver tissue, edged with fur. The décolletage was cut low, to reveal the neck and shoulders, and the gown had short sleeves trailing ermine-edged tippets. The tightly fitted, boned bodice was sewn with diamonds which sparkled with every move. The folds of the overskirt fell back to form a train, and a separate, sweeping court train of cloth-of-gold edged with ermine fell from her shoulders. Over this, Alexandra wore the imperial mantle of cloth-of-gold, lined and edged with ermine. These robes were so heavy that four pages had to help carry them. Alexandra wore her hair swept back to emphasise her graceful neck and shoulders. Two long, twin side curls were attached to her own hair. Her long veil of tulle was held in place by a Russian Kokoshnik tiara, of diamonds set in platinum, and the Romanov nuptial crown of diamonds sewn on crimson velvet. Alexandra also wore a number of diamond brooches on the front of her gown, along with the jewelled chain of the Order of St. Andrew and strings of pearls around her neck. These jewels, as well as the tiara, had been wedding gifts from the late tsar, costing some 300,000 rubles ($150,000). She also wore the imperial riviére, a diamond necklace of 475 carats, and a pair of matching earrings. The earrings were so heavy, in fact, that they had to be supported by wires around the ears, which slowly cut into the flesh as the day wore on. Around her tiara, Alexandra wore a wreath of orange blossoms, brought from the Imperial Conservatory in Warsaw. Across the dress stretched the red ribbon of the Order of St. Catherine.”

At this point I'm pretty sure Glow & Darkness is lost media and will never be released. It's probably for the better, although I would still love to watch this mess because just judging by the costumes alone it would have been so bad that it's entertaining again.
They pulled dresses from Still Star-Crossed (fantasy style that pull from various periods), Reinas (cheaply made 16th century dresses with insanely big crinoline skirts) and The Last Czars (early 20th century) for a story set in the 13th century. They would have probably butchered all historical figures but I need to see this car crash of a show.

I'm making fun of this documentary but tbh if Rasputin comforted me whilst I was grieving a loss and told me it wasnt my fault, I'd probably have sex with him too

My biggest pet peeve in historical media is when no matter where or when a setting takes place, the actors are always british. I’m watching a documentary about the romanov’s WHY DO THEY SOUND LIKE THEY’RE IN PEAKY BLINDERS????

How’s this for a stress dream:
I was back working in an architectural office setting. However, we weren’t using computers, it was back to manual drafting on tables.
I had a project deadline approaching in the next 36 hours. I had yet to start drafting any of the plans. The project was for a 15-story mixed-used building with a below grade parking garage.
I was the only person available to work on this project.
Coffee and cocaine became my closest companions.

Adding to the list of eventual video essay ideas (we will get to ever after before the new year i swear): Why Once Upon a December is the best song in an animated musical (and how Disney has NEVER managed to surpass it)

"It is for me to thank you, my darling, for coming here all the way with our girlies and bringing here life and sunshine notwithstanding the rainy weather. Of course, as usual, I did not tell you half the things I had intended to say, because when we meet after a long separation, somehow I get stupidly shy and sit and gaze at you - which already is a joy for me!"
Letter from Nicholas II to Alexandra, where he thanks the visit that she made together with their daughters to the Stavka headquarters, where Nicholas was with Alexei. July 13, 1916.

I’m kinda hooked on Netflix’ docutainment shows. Although I treat them more like cheaply produced fictional period dramas that are loosely based on some historical events.
I already watched Rise of Empires: Ottoman, The Last Czars, Queen Cleopatra and Blood, Sex & Royalty. I also started African Queens: Njinga and Roman Empire. Do you have any other recommendations on this kind of genre?

drag dame of the garter
drag countess of sandwich (sua jure)
drag fishwife
drag cabinet minister
drag lady of appeal in ordinary
drag privy councilor
drag keeper of the king's swans
drag Bürgermeisterin
drag groom of the stool
drag surveyor of the king's pictures
drag Resident Governor of the Tower of London and Keeper of the Jewel House
drag czarina
Surely they can’t all be drag queens. We need some drag duchesses, drag countesses, drag marchionesses, drag alderman’s wives. The drag peerage system will fall apart if the proper order is not restored.

For years now, I have been railing against the Republican Party as a literal – literal – Party of Plague. In these closing days of the campaign, they have quadrupled back down on this in ways that will kill millions of Americans.
Not “might.” Will.
Appointing RFK, Jr. as czar of public health and letting him “go wild” will kill millions. Again, not might: will. Not immediately, no, but over time. Trump himself is utterly refusing to promise he and his party won’t ban vaccines and said on Sunday that RFK Jr.’s pledge to eliminate fluoridation of water on day one “sounds OK to me.”
If they do this and make it stick, millions will die. And an outsized number of them will be children.
Courtesy McNadoMD on Mastodon, here are a few of the diseases mass vaccination eliminated from American life, and which banning vaccination will bring back, along with some of their symptoms and progression paths.Howdy folks! Friendly neighborhood ER doc here. Did you know that Trump’s folks want to take vaccines off of the market? That means you can’t get a shot even if you want one. Did you know that the tetanus shot is a vaccine? If you want your kids to be safe from lockjaw (caused by tetanus), you want vaccines to be available. You know what else is a vaccine? Rabies shots. If a rabid dog or bat bites your kid, do you want your kid to be able to be treated before they die of rabies?

You get the idea, right?
These aren’t the only ones. These are just a few of those less often mentioned in these modern times, because people have forgot they exist.
When I say the Republican Party is a Party of Plague, when I say it is a goddamn death cult, I mean every single one of those words in every way you might think.
They are promising economic ruin and they are promising ethnic purges and now they are promising mass death of children.
All while killing pregnant people for their vile sense of domination, of course. Let us never forget that, since their families certainly won’t.
One of the things their apologists keep saying is that “Trump doesn’t mean it” and “Trump won’t do it,” and “That’s just Trump being Trump,” and they talk about “Trump derangement syndrome,” and say that we’re stupid for believing what their candidate fucking says he’ll do, and meanwhile, they get enraged about shit they completely make up about us and the candidates who are with us.
We react to things their candidates promise. They react to shit they make up wholesale about us. We are not the fucking same.
If only the political press would catch on to that fact.
The very last day of a campaign is a pretty lousy time to bring up another topic, even if it’s not really new. But this is, again, so murderously psychotic that I can’t not bring it back up.
Maybe you can bring it up, too, on this final day of this hellish and evil campaign, this Monday, November 4th, 2024.
Zero days remain.
It is Lastday.
