I need to Get Out of the Midwest. I think it’s draining me of all life and energy like some kind of regional soul-sucking vampire

#everything just constantly feels so miserable and ugly here #the landscape. the vibes. the people #idk. I used to not mind the Midwest that much #but in the past year I feel like I’m gnawing on the bars of a too small kennel #or some kind of enclosure not meant for me #idk maybe I’m being dramatic. but just. rah rah rah #I do not think I could live the majority of my life here I would go insane #I think part of it is also I just want/need to start over somewhere completely new #I’ve lost connections with literally everyone I’ve known my whole life #I am not close with my family and hate most of them and my friends….#ugh. that’s a whole other post that essentially boils down to #I have lost the vast majority of my friends in the past year and honestly it’s a relief #because we were so incomparably different and I’ve realized a lot of them kinda didn’t treat me/others well #and once I had that realization there was no going back I could not comfortably be around them #there are only two ppl in this vague area that I still feel deeply connected to and care about in a fierce way #(Lee and Jordan you are the real ones)#and idk. I just. I hate where I live I hate my job I don’t feel truly connected to ANYTHING anymore #if I’m going to be so disconnected from everyone around me and feel like I’m constantly just wandering around #I feel I should at least do it somewhere I would enjoy the actual location of more #but I am stupid and resigned my lease #so I have to stay here for at least another year #unless I wanna be REAL dumb and irresponsible #but I’m too anxious for that kinda thing #as much as I daydream I could not uproot myself to move and massive distance without an insane amount of planning #and decent financing plans #so el oh el #kaz rambles

Jack of the Wood, of the Green, of the Tales, of Many Names.

I wanted to lean a bit into the whole “aura of summer” he has going on occasionally and got a bit self indulgent. All the species depicted (except one) are found within the Appalachian mountain range.

#old gods of Appalachia #ogoa #fanart #jack of the woods #JT Fields #most of my experience in art is with landscape painting and scientific illustration #so if I’m going to draw a guy there’s also going to be a lot of nature involved #I chose to include species for various reasons #some due to meaning or personal jokes or references (field cricket jackrabbit coyote goldenrod spider webs/the orb weaver)#others due the vibe specifically what is described when people are interpreting him and what do I associate with mid/late summer #so cicadas katydids copperheads poison ivy fireflies crawdads and mayflies #some as specific references to location like the pawpaw American chestnut pokeweed kudzu eastern lubber #and others just cause I felt like it (most of the wildflowers)#also all the aquatic macroinvertebrates around the border were a mix of self indulgence and leaning into the whole old creeks/muddy rivers #schtick he has going sometimes

I think it demonstrates a singularly spectacular lack of reading comprehension and/or curiosity about current music played on UK and US radio stations

#even with a hella detailed view into the specifics around Louis that came out last week #the way someone's gonna read that as a ban??#so i guess we can just say anyone beyond the current top 20 artists/songs played ad nauseum on any radio station across the land is banned #nobody's banning people--your fave's not the flave #i challenge thee to listen to 8 hrs of radio on UK or US airwaves and jot down what you hear #do it for a full week #see if you can see the pattern lol #this reminds me of that article i saw linked on twitter #about the musical mush pervading most music providing platforms #that and the fact that the 'test' described in that louis piece are nothing new--same vibes (same test!) for 20+ years #it's only getting worse with actual algorithms taking out the guesswork but yes this is the music landscape #it's just a funny-ass way to frame it #almost as if people don't understand the actual definition of the word banned #if you want to keep it in the one direction realm #niall's about to be banned #zayn's banned #harry was banned for a fair bit #i highly doubt louis's going to change what he's doing to chase radio 1 #and so!#he's not!#if it makes people feel more heroic to say their fave is banned well...join the club of successful artists currently banned #yet still producing incredible music and touring etc #rakin' in tons of cash #idk man i'm totally happy with my faves being 'banned' off radio 1 #but i also know it's the world's stupidest false flag of a statement to make lmaoooooooo #i'm a big fan of this struggling indie artist--her name's beyonce #haven't heard of her? well that's because she's currently banned from radio play on UK and US radio stations

Listen. It's fine if you don't want a deeper message in art. That's what l'art pour l'art is all about. But it's not any more accessible than like. What the symbolists did. But read poetry beyond the poetry's equivalent of fast fashion, made just to be posted on social media. There's a difference between a poet who writes from their soul and a person who writes for easy money that comes with going viral, and a poet who just loves writing aesthetic poetry will put infinitely deeper things to paper than like. How do I say this. A person for whom you can tell they tried to seem deep because it sells, but essentially said nothing new or, worse yet, their point came off entirely lukewarm.

#wow Korka mentioning l'art pour l'art without shitting on it?#i must be growing up #i get what they meant and it's not like i think art created without deeper meaning is bad art #tbh i think it's just as needed as commentaries - art is not just museums art is also entertainment and fun and so on #but like it's just an entirely different viewpoint #they thought art MUST be just about the aesthetic that art should not serve to teach the reader about the world #and i agree on ''you can't turn to art to tell you directly what to do and what not to do''#but i don't vibe with the ban on it. i think some art very well can serve as a lesson or as a commentary #similarly i believe that you can't really make art without deeper meaning #whether you want to or not a bit of yourself will leak into your art #you can write me a poem about the landscape and say it's just about the landscapr #but i'll learn about you through it. different people will describe the rain differently #whether you describe it as calm and gentle or harsh and cold or romantic or etc etc #i'll learn smth about you and your view on the world

#had another one of those dreams #lived in a dome city probably on another planet #kind of had zoo landscaping vibes and wire handrails?#there was no sense of danger but we were packing up everything like we were evacuating #and they wouldn't let us take animals and electronics through the teleporter and I was trying to help people smuggle them I guess?#everyone was lined up waiting because there were only 2 teleporter pod/pad things and I was helping them repack their bags #and we all lived in hotel-like rooms in building with a huge central elevator in the middle of the dome #I had to chase someone's rabbit at one point that's why I remember the landscaping #there was a rock cliff I had to slide down to get to it #my dreams have all had very (relatively) coherent plots lately #I kinda dig it #I'll probably work this one into the comic somehow
