More from The Jayhawks Archive HERE
Strange Bedfellows - Def American Edition
When The Jayhawks signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American Recordings label in 1992 (shortened to just American Recordings in 1993), their label mates were a wide and varied bunch - everyone from Slayer to Andrew Dice Clay. Like other labels, Def American frequently issued promotional compilations showcasing their rosters. Music from The Jayhawks was dutifully added to the sampler mix even before their major label debut and breakthrough album Hollywood Town Hall was released in September 1992.
Here are two early Def American promotional comps. The first is 1992 Preview, a cassette only release that came out early in the year; indeed the copyright date actually shows 1991. Not counting the 1986 Big Hits of Mid -America Volume IV compilation and a few promo compilation cassettes covering The Jayhawk's tenure on Twin/Tone, the legendary Minneapolis indie label that released the Blue Earth album in 1989, this is probably the first compilation of any kind featuring The Jayhawks in their major label era. Fellow Americana traveller Dan Baird, who had recently gone solo after a long stint with The Georgia Satellites, shares the tracklist with The Jayhawks. But after that it’s a mix of varying shades of metallic (Wolfsbane, Doom and the label’s very first signing, Slayer), early 90s hip hop (Sir Mix-a-Lot, Pretty Tone Capone) and File Under: Who Dat? (The Red Devils, The Four Horsemen, Trouble).
Equally wacky is a 1993 European CD compilation, the second and final installment in Def American’s short lived Til Def Us Do Part series. The imagery on the cover - "Love it or leave it" and the upside down American flag - is as odd as the mangled syntax of the album title. A good chunk of the artists from the 1992 Preview collection are featured again along with kindred spirits and Jayhawks tour mates The Black Crowes. Notable additions include pioneering sludge rockers Flipper (who had a one off album on Def American in 1993) and Danzig, Glenn Danzig’s seminal eponymous band born out of the remnants of The Misfits and a key early Def American signing in the late 1980s. Since "alt country" wasn't really a thing yet, the brief bio here provides this thumbnail description for The Jayhawks: "haunting country-flavoured rock."
The Jayhawks would continue to be featured on a wide variety of compilations in the ensuing years. While many of them, especially in the 1990s, pigeon-holed them on various "Americana" and "Alt Country" collections, none of them were as stylistically mish-mashed as these early Def American samplers.

i’m the worst kind of person because i get so annoyed by jokes/ people making fun of things when the whole basis of the joke depends on the listener not knowing anything about the subject
#just saw someone making fun of all the different names kansas university has for things#but if you knew any of kansas/ history of the school there’s actually no joke to be had#like jayhawk is not only what you’re called if you’re born in kansas but there is a vast history of the jayhawkers#in and around kansas specifically in lawerence (where ku is) around the civil war/kansas becoming a state#there’s tons of historical papers in the ku archive about it/ general articles at the institution plus if you grow up in kansas#you grow up learning about the history of jayhawks throughout your entire time in school#then they were making fun of allen field house for being nicknamed ‘the phog’ which was literally the nickname of the#coach the fieldhouse was named after…..#but THEN and this is the one that really pissed me off they were making fun of the fact that a fieldhouse was called a fieldhouse because#‘there’s a basketball court not a field in there’#and maybe i only know this because i worked at a college but A FIELDHOUSE IS THE GENERAL TERM FOR SPORTS FACILITY BUKLDINGS THAT TYPICALLY#HOLD MULTIPLE SPORTS ON A COLLEGE CAMPUS ITS ALSO WHY THE BASKETBALL COURT IS CALLED NAISMITH COURT#BECAUSE THERES MORE THAN ONE PURPOSE FOR THE BUILDING#like i’m sorry you’ll never find me laughing at a joke for something that has an easily look upable history or context#eris: text

Title: Wet Cat
Summary: Amethyst puts Connie's athletics to the ultimate test! Steven is also there.
This short story is based heavily upon this specific piece of art by @screwpinecaprice! Go give their art some love.
If you hate external links, the short can also be found below the cut:
Wet Cat By ArchiveHub
“I bet you caaaaan’t…” Amethyst paused for but a brief moment, “do a double backflip!”
Before the gem could finish her sentence, Connie had already leapt into the air. Two reverse somersaults later, the woman’s feet were planted back on Beach City’s coarse, snow-white sand.
Steven applauded his wife as best as he could with a glass of fruit juice in one hand and a sleeping infant in the other. Amethyst, on the contrary, offered a reserved, almost unimpressed hum of approval.
“Gotta admit, I’ve never seen a human do that before,” the gem remarked.
Connie's lips curled into a satisfied smirk. “What can I say?” she giggled, smoothing out her Jayhawk University t-shirt. She leaned tenderly into her husband's bare shoulder and met the purple gem's gaze. "No challenge could ever top going through labor twice. After that, well," she chuckled breathily, "just about anything feels possible, I suppose."
A devious grin spread across Amethyst's face; she rubbed her palms together. "Anything, huh?"
“Anything,” Connie reiterated, unwavering in tone.
“Well...” the gem snorted, “I bet you can’t catch a fish in the next thirty seconds.”
The woman cracked her knuckles and rolled her shoulders. “Make it twenty."
“Fifteen!” Amethyst countered, drawing an old-timey stopwatch from her gem, “starting now!”
In an instant, Connie’s shirt was tossed overhead, into the seaside breeze; her feet were slapping against the ocean’s ripples mere seconds later. Her husband cheered her on as she dove toward an oncoming wave and disappeared into the sea's murky, blue depths.
Amethyst held her breath as the water sat completely still, completely silent, for what felt like hours on end. Glancing at Steven, she couldn’t help but notice his thoroughly unperturbed expression—in fact, beneath his sunglasses, he looked almost… relaxed?
With three seconds to spare, Connie erupted from the ocean's surface with a juvenile striped bass between her teeth. She then flopped ashore with all the grace of a wet cat escaping a bathtub—an all-too-familiar sight for her and Steven. The fish wriggled helplessly as she slowly, yet steadily, pulled herself onto her feet and brushed the sand from her ankles.
Connie offered Amethyst an exaggerated bow. “Your fish, madam.” With the writhing bass between her lips, her words were barely intelligible. She gingerly dropped her catch into the unresponsive, slack-jawed gem’s hands. "Don't go spending that all in one place now, you hear?" she quipped, clapping her on the shoulder. She readjusted her yellow-orange bra straps and wiped saltwater from her lips. "Now, I've gotta go grab Lisa’s two o’clock formula," she smiled. "Be right back, guys."
As the woman jogged down the coastline, toward the Temple, Amethyst stared wordlessly at the slimy product of her spontaneous dare. Tentatively, she breathed, “Has she, like… I don't know, done that before or something?”
“Hm?” Steven hummed from nearby, preoccupied with soothing his hungry daughter. “Oh! Uh…" he paused, tapping a sandaled foot against the beach, "no, she definitely hasn’t."

Sitting in the co-pilot’s seat of the New Dawn, with the sound of the Jayhawks playing faintly in the background, Trill gazed through the viewport at the green planet below them.
“And you’re sure?” she checked, glancing over her shoulder. “Ajan Kloss is the place?”
Strolling into the cockpit, his hair still damp and loose from a recent shower, Jacen nodded. “One hundred percent. I finally got in contact with my main man Ton Phanan, and he confirmed it for me.”
“It better be,” Kasmir muttered from the seat behind Jacen’s. “I’ve had enough of this wandering around.”

Friday, 21 October 2022:
Tim O’Reagan Tim O’Reagan (Lost Highway) (originally released in 2005 on Mercy Recordings on CD only, then released in 2006 on Lost Highway on LP and CD)
In 2020 I got on a miniature Jayhawks kick that saw me finally purchase their 2011 reissues. I intended on listening to their catalog but I didn’t get through it. I pretty much listened to their new album XOXO and two of the band’s archive releases Live From The Women’s Club volumes one and two. I investigated the solo albums by each member and I recall being somewhat surprised that bassist Tim O’Reagan had a solo album out.
The album was originally only released on CD by Mercy Recordings which is run by a religious community and who in 2008 became House of Mercy Recordings. This label also released one of ex-Jayhawks Mark Olson’s albums with the Creekdippers, 2004′s Political Manifest. Then Lost Highway picked the album up and began releasing it (and the CD version) in 2006.
This album isn’t anything I would ever expect to run into in the used bins around my community, but in Chicago at Laurie’s Planet of Sound it isn’t too surprising to find. Above you see the front and the back of the album cover. Below you will find the A and B Side labels.
