Tonight's episode previews the star attractions at this weekend's Outlaw Music Festival taking place at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY. While I won't be attending this year, these artists are some of my faves, and likely yours. With the upcoming running of the 2025 Jim Dandy looming this weekend, we naturally tried to incorporate a musical angle into tonight's episode. The story of how the race came to be named for this horse is worth a read, so do that while you enjoy tonight's selections. Much of Side A comes from a collection of tunes that will be familiar to Grateful Dead fans. Side B is a mishmash, with some recent tunes from faves such as Rhiannon Giddens and Jesse Dayton, as well as some "ambient Americana", as chosen by our pals at Uncut Magazine. It all hangs together pretty well and should pair nicely with a warm summer evening.

For our penultimate June episode, which happens to fall on Juneteenth, we feature some great roots reggae from the Nighthawk label. During the late 70's and 80's, this label could be counted on to release quality well recorded reggae from some of the best artists that Jamaica produced, including the Gladiators, Culture, and many others. Their catalog has been reissued by the folks at Omnivore Recordings, and is well worth seeking out. It's hot and steamy in these parts today, and summer arrives tomorrow allegedly, so perfect sounds for the season. Enjoy!

We continue our month-long feature of black artists and their music with great selections from the Stax/Volt "Written In Their Soul" collection, which focuses on the songwriters and their demos. We play a bunch of tracks that were demoed, but never cut by the Stax stable of artists. On Side B, we pay tribute to the genius that was Sly Stone, with several of his biggest songs taken from the "Sly Lives" documentary produced by Questlove. Good stuff from great artists!

This week's episode ahead of the Memorial Day holiday came together organically, just digging through the archives for the most part. Wanted to hear/play a couple Lucinda Williams faves, so we do that in the first half. We also close each side with a Waylon track, one a cover and one of his. Don't sleep on the Jesse Dayton tracks that kick off Side B, he's got a great new album, and also contributed to Kinky Friedman's final recordings. Let's get to it eh?

This week's episode comes after a week hiatus and is inspired by a recent CD purchase (pictured above) on Drag City Records. It features new interpretations of traditional music from Scotland that were brought to Nova Scotia, from which my bride hails. So we jumped off from there and continued with a Canadian emphasis throughout the first half, with a mix of Americana infused tracks on the other side. We are also using some new gear to record with and there's a bit of a learning curve, so please bear with us...

So when my mother passed last April, I acquired bunch of her CDâs, including the collection of Frank Sinatra radio appearances that we feature on Side A this week. The connection to the Carl Stalling Project is Raymond Scott, who is the bandleader on the Sinatra recordings and whose melodies inspired so many of Stallings compositions for Warner Brothers.
Side B features some of our fave EDM tracks from the Beatport platform and Bedrock Records latest release, âHeaven Scentsâ. Makes sense? Not likely to anyone but usâŚ

Welcome to Spring! While the temps have been significantly milder of late, weâve also been dealing with some blustery conditions. What that has to do with tonightâs episode is unknown. Tonight's episode came mostly from the soundtrack to the movie Ghost World, which was released in 2001? co-starring a young Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch. Directed by Terry Zwigoff, and adapted from the Daniel Clowes graphic novel of the same name. We feature several 78's from Zwigoff's personal collection of early blues recordings, as well as a couple of other tremendously offbeat selections. Great stuff all around. Side B is a bit of a odds and sods collection, featuring several tracks from our possibly favorite live recording of all time, "Waiting for Columbus" by Little Feat, which turned 47 years young last month. Enjoy live on RadioRadioX.com after 7pm, or wait for the archive version coming soon.
