Promising material for solar energy gets its curious boost from entropy, researchers show
Solar energy is critical for a clean-energy future. Traditionally, solar energy is harvested using silicon—the same semiconductor material used in everyday electronic devices. But silicon solar panels have drawbacks: for instance, they're expensive and hard to mount on curved surfaces. Researchers have developed alternative materials for solar-energy harvesting to solve such shortcomings. Among the most promising of these are called "organic" semiconductors, carbon-based semiconductors that are Earth-abundant, cheaper and environmentally friendly. "They can potentially lower the production cost for solar panels because these materials can be coated on arbitrary surfaces using solution-based methods—just like how we paint a wall," said Wai-Lun Chan, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Kansas.

Today, carbon-fiber materials are nearly ubiquitous in the industrialized world, found in everything from hockey sticks to passenger airliners. With hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon fiber produced around the world every year, scientists have sought useful, cost-effective methods for recycling the material. But carbon fiber -- strands of carbon atoms bonded together in a matrix -- is particularly tough to recycle into new useful materials. "It's usually a woven material combined with a matrix, often made of epoxy or polystyrene, that holds it together," said Berl Oakley, Irving S. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Kansas. "You have a mixture of the fabric and the matrix, so the goal is to recover the fabric for reuse and also dissolve the matrix without creating something toxic or wasteful. Ideally, you want to reclaim value from it."

Tumblr media
Billy Jensen has a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and began his writing career as a side project and creative outlet during his time running the family painting business. He began his own zine, The Fight Card. His efforts were noticed by the Village Voice, and he was offered a single story in the first issue of their Long Island edition. From there, Billy continued writing and launched a career that would lead to national acclaim.

Continuing with my weird and spooky historical destinations in Kansas, I visited Pioneer Cemetery, located at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Originally called Oread Cemetery, the oldest graves date back to the 1850’s. A large portion of the graves belong to the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer infantry, who began to be interred there in 1862. The victims of Quantrill’s raid were buried there in 1863, but a majority of the graves were moved to Oak Hill Cemetery upon its construction in 1865.
One of the most notable graves belongs to Thomas W. Barber, an abolitionist shot by pro-slavery men in 1855. Allegedly, the famous Kansan abolitionist John Brown looked upon Barber’s body at the Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence, and called his death “one of the sure results of the Civil War.” A poem written by John Greenleaf Whittier is engraved on stones near Barber’s final resting place.
The graveyard was rehabbed and  renamed Pioneer Cemetery in 1928, but fell into disrepair by the 1950’s. The cemetery went unused until the burial of scientist and KU alum Elmer McCollum, known for discovering vitamin A, in 1968.
The cemetery has since been restored, and is now owned and run by the KU Endowment.  According to an article in the Lawrence Journal World, “university faculty and staff who served at least 15 years are eligible for burial there,” as are “distinguished Service Citation winners, trustees of the Endowment Association and members of the Alumni Association’s board of directors.”
Because of the violence associated with the burials there, many believe the cemetery is haunted. While I was unable to uncover any specific ghost stories, visitors have reported the feeling of unseen presences and phantom images appearing in their photographs. I did not encounter the paranormal on my visit, but found it peaceful and serene. Pioneer is in a quiet location on the West part of the campus, off the beaten path from the main buildings and residence halls, and my partner and I were the only two people there. Every so often, a car or bus passed by. As I walked through the quiet graves, I felt an overwhelming sensation of peace, and I wished that I’d spent more time there as a KU student.

PROFESSOR AT UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS—THOSE MEN WHO DON’T VOTE HARRIS SHOULD BE “LINED UP AND SHOT.”
A professor at the University of Kansas recently made a highly controversial comment, suggesting that men who do not vote for Vice President Kamala Harris should be “lined up and shot.” The remark was caught on a recording, after which the professor asked for the statement to be removed so the university’s dean would not become aware of it. This incident has sparked significant outrage, with many…

The Story of Regina
Regina Oliveira was an important part of the surreal story of my life from 1984 to 1991, then she disappeared. This story teaches that you can't know how much good your act of kindness today will do 40 years from now.
My next article will be the one I will not write first in Spanish. I will write it only in poor Portuguese – the only form of Portuguese I know how to write. And I’m not going to give a translation, because it’s a letter, not to you, but to a Brazilian friend who was very important in our lives. A friend I haven’t known how to find for a very long time. However, I will explain it. Regina…
