You know what I love about BBC Sherlock?
You only catch some things on your 2nd, or 5th or 10th rewatch.
Like with Mycroft and Sherlock.
You watch Mycroft be annoyed at Sherlock calling at Christmas, so you think he would rather be left alone and doesn't want to deal with anyone, including Sherlock.
But his initial expression is one of surprise. He doesn't want to believe that Sherlock could be calling for sentimental reasons because he cannot bear to be wrong.
He wants Sherlock to show him he cares, like he did back when they were children.
And notice his wording there. "Did they pass a new law?" Sherlock is not the one who cares about upholding the law, Mycroft is. He is setting the stage for Sherlock to banter, but Sherlock just tells him Irene Adler is dead and hangs up.
When Sherlock calls Mycroft (despite the fact he prefers to text) in TSO3 many speculate the reason he wants him at the wedding is to have someone for support.
Mycroft says they will spend more time together now that John is married. Just like old times. He knows Sherlock would hate that, yet Sherlock doesn't deny it. He could say he can spend extra time with Mrs Hudson, or Lestrade or Molly or Wiggins.
He could say he doesn't need him at all. But we know that's not quite true.
If Sherlock was being sincere here and said he needs someone on his side, by his side, someone to be there for him, so he feels less alone... Mycroft would most likely think he was being mocked. He wouldn't believe him. Why should he?
When Mycroft tells Sherlock his loss would break his heart, he isn't doing it because of the drugs.
The drugs are just an excuse to hide behind. A smokescreen. He can't even look at Sherlock while is he saying it because he knows what's coming. Mockery.
"What the hell am I supposed to say to that?"
Mycroft broke script. He said the quiet part, the subtextual part out loud. I do care about you and it would break my heart if you died.
Sherlock doesn't know what to say. You can even read his bewildered statement as a genuine question. Mycroft does, in a way. So he answers.
"Merry Christmas?"
"You hate Christmas."
"Perhaps there was something in the punch."
I know you are up to something.
On the tarmac, Sherlock didn't even want to say goodbye to his brother. But when Mycroft calls him in 4 minutes, Sherlock has no idea Moriarty might be back. He just thinks Mycroft couldn't go even five minutes without speaking to him again and checking up on him.
Sherlock didn't say goodbye to Mycroft because he knew that wouldn't be the last time he'd hear from him.
"I will always be there for you."
"Shouldn't you be out there getting me a pardon, like a proper big brother?"
"He was a rubbish big brother." Was, not is.
"You were great."
He didn't find Lady Bracknell convincing. He isn't talking about that.
"Dr Watson? Look after him, please?"
"Mycroft. Make sure he's looked after. He's not as strong as he thinks he is."
Neither of them are.

Hi Steph! Any fics with Moran? Either as a prevalent side character or the main. If not, non-romantic Mycroft fics?

Mycroft Plays a Role in This Fic
Mycroft Plays a Role Pt. 2
Mycroft Plays a Role Pt. 3
Matchmaker Mycroft
Big Brother Mycroft

For Moran, I don't have many that I recall, so I did a tag/name search for MORAN on my lists. Check these out, and please add your own, friends if you have them!
======
MORAN IS IN THIS FIC
BOOKMARKS
I Will Take Care Of You by SailorChibi (T, 16,664 w., 15 Ch. || Hurt/Comfort, Sick Sherlock, BAMF John, BAMF Lestrade, Reunion Fic) – Two years after Sherlock's death, John comes to find him on the sofa. Wounded and ill, Sherlock is convinced he's hallucinating and refuses to share any details about Moran or the fact that Mycroft has been compromised. That doesn't stop John from stepping up and taking care of the last of Moriarty's web, BAMF-style.
The Lost Special: Family Matters (As Do Relationships) by ShirleyCarlton (M, 144,688 w., 40 Ch. || S4 Fix It Fic / Meta Fic, Unreliable Narrator, John’s Mind Bungalow, Friends to Lovers, Happy Ending, Demisexual Sherlock, Holmes Family, John Whump, Gay Mycroft, Misunderstandings, Drug Addiction, Parenting, TFP is a Nightmare, Virgin Sherlock, Slow Burn, Minor Character Death, Switchlock, John’s Past, Sherlock’s Past, Eurus, Love Confessions) –Sherrinford is not really the name of some high security prison. That was just a figment of John’s frantic coma dream. And Eurus is not actually Sherlock’s sister. That’s just something random she said to John before shooting him. Sherlock and John were never actually estranged. That was just their act to cover up what really happened to Mary – or Rosamund Moran, as her real name has turned out to be. Sherlock does have a secret sibling, though, and his name is Sherrinford. After finally eliminating Moran – though in a rather dramatically different way than they had envisioned – and exposing the truth about Eurus, John encourages Sherlock to delve into his past and to find out whether the reasons to keep Sherrinford away from Sherlock were the right ones, and to discover what really happened in 1981. Along the way, Sherlock and John gradually, finally, stop keeping each other at a distance, and eventually become a proper family of their own.
Sherlock Holmes Live by emilycare (E, 488,496 w., 73 Ch. || Theatre AU || Immersive Theatre, Romance, Slow Burn, Fake / Pretend Relationship, Fluff, Bisexual John, Demisexual Gay Sherlock, Alternating POV, Falling in Love, Eventual Case Fic, Soft Sherlock, Panic Attacks, Hurt/Comfort, Angst with Happy Ending, Pining John) – Down on his luck John Watson answers an advert for a paid role in an experimental play. Enter William Scott with a most unusual proposition: help him test run a two person immersive experience, oh and by the way there is sex and romance involved.
MARKED FOR LATER
I Didn't Know I How Much I Needed You by orphan_account (M, 4,270 +w., 3/? Ch. || WiP || Teen Ballet/Rugby High School AU || Ballet Dancer Sherlock, Rugby Player John, Gay Sherlock, Underage Sex, Graphic Violence, Teenage Drama, Blow Jobs, Anal/Oral, Spanking, Implied Past Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Drug Abuse, Prostitution, Sex Worker Sherlock, Pimp!Moran) – Sherlock is an orphaned boy raised by his abusive foster father. He's under the control of an over-bearing and cruel pimp, Sebastian Moran, who makes a lot of money off of Sherlock's ability to seduce anyone. Treated like a worthless whore, Sherlock feels loved for the first time when he meets John Watson, a rugby player with a hard life. The two boys are drawn to each other instantly and thus begins a beautiful relationship that neither of the boys have ever experienced before.
Curse of the Were-Tuna by WhoGroovesOn (E, 46,916 w., 9 Ch. || Were-Creature AU || Nudity, Aquariums, Fish, Body Horror, Curses, Cuddling, Romance, Transformations, Frottage, Anal, Fem! Moriaty/Moran, First Time) – John couldn’t help but feel as though the large tuna beyond the glass was staring at him, which was weird because it’s not like fish had eyelids, they always seemed to be staring at things.
Rust Red Skies by bakerstreetashtray (E, 73,597 w., 26 Ch. || Army/Military AU || MorMor) – Jim Moriarty is a newly qualified medic, uncertain about the job and heading out to Afghanistan to be posted out with a team. NEO Team, to be specific - headed by one, Captain Sebastian Moran. Working under impossible conditions in a volatile area, inexperienced with saving lives and recovering from a troubled childhood, the attention of the Captain is the last thing on Jim's mind. And yet, it might just become the first.
Between the Fall and the Creation by 7PercentSolution & shelleysprometheus (E, 78,954 w., 23 Ch. || Angst, Betrayal, Case Fic, Trust, Revenge, Rebirth, Grief/Mourning, Alternating POV, Extortion, Entrapment, Blood and Torture, BAMF John, Twins, Suicidal Ideation) – However inconvenient. However improbable. Could be dangerous. SHJohn had stared at those two lines of text for far longer than was necessary. In seven words, in an instant, his life had both been given back to him and at the same time, altered irreparably. Of course, he had gone. Had he ever not followed wherever Sherlock had led? And he had watched, silent, still, gun pressed solidly to the back of Moran’s head as Sherlock had faced down Moriarty and Moriarty had … well, done the unthinkable. Not that he’s not grateful to the depths of his being for Sherlock’s return and Moriarty’s demise. He is just, well… most probably he is in shock. When Sherlock had ‘died’, John’s world had fallen apart. Cracked, shattered into pieces, been obliterated. And now that Sherlock is back, living, breathing, sitting calmly across from him in the living room of 221B, he is … numb, furious, deliriously happy and devastatingly betrayed—all at the same time. He’s fucked up in a hundred thousand different ways. And Sherlock ... The fact that their chairs now face the hearth rather than each other is an indication of just how large the gulf that has opened up between them really is. Part 4 of the Forethought and Fire series
Few Escape the Gallows by 7PercentSolution & shelleysprometheus (E, 92,406 w., 26 Ch. || Grieving John, Case Fic, Angry Moran, Torture, Domestic Violence, Knife Play, Blood and Injury, BDSM, Sulking Sherlock, MorMor) – Sherlock is dead. Moriarty is free. And John is ... falling. What do you do when you have nothing to lose? Following on from A Dead Man's Money, this fic pits a grieving John Watson against an angry Sebastian Moran. Mycroft is scheming in the background and Moriarty is making mischief. And Sherlock ... ? Part 3 of the Forethought and Fire series
Fin de Siècle Series by Calais_Reno (M, 102,149 w. across 20 works || Victorian AU || Alternate First Meeting, Friends to Lovers, Alternating POV, Misunderstandings, Period-Typical Homophobia, Love Declarations, Grief/Mourning, Victorian Attitudes, Marriage of Convenience, True Love, Loneliness, Hurt/Comfort) – Holmes and Watson meet and commit themselves to one another, in spite of laws that make their relationship illegal. Holmes confronts Moriarty at Reichenbach hoping to end his influence in the government; he falls, but does not win. Moriarty's machine continues. While Holmes tries to make his way back to England, Watson, believing Holmes dead, suffers the consequences of their opposition to Sebastian Moran, Moriarty's successor. Finally reunited after several years, Holmes and Watson work to end the corruption that has taken over Britain's government.
We Will Survive by anny (M, 103,007 w., 21/25 Ch. || WiP || Viclock vs Johnlock, Past Viclock, Anal / BJ’s / Orgasms, Music, Jealousy, Case Fic, Social Media, Protective Mycroft, Pining John / Sherlock, Fluff, Weddings, Drug References, Drunkenness, Angst, Humour, Character Death) – After Reichenbach, Sherlock is back in London to face a new villain: Sebastian Moran. But he has to deal with John's new life with Mary Morstan, and he soon understands that things between them have changed. With the arrival of Victor Trevor in Sherlock's life, John will finally deal with his true feelings for Sherlock.....

hey, random question, but i keep seeing you post about a “sherlock chapter 1”, and everything i’ve seen you say about it looks super interesting. if it’s not too much trouble, may you point me to where i can get into it? or perhaps present a short intro? it’s cool if you don’t want to, dw, but it sounds awesome and i trust your taste ehe
Aha! Absolutely! A chance to talk about Sherlock Holmes Chapter One! It's an open world mystery game, with an overarching story and a bunch of smaller ones. It's on multiple platforms but there's a sale on right now on Steam! (Are Steam sales global? Uh...) I bought it on PS4, and it came with all the DLC.
Sherlock Holmes Chapter One features a Victorian-era young (21-ish) Sherlock. It takes place on the fictional island of Cordona— I can't tell if the deluxe edition comes with all the DLC, but you will want that if possible.
There's a lot of meta I could say about this game, but I think the thing I like most is that Sherlock is allowed to be wrong. You are probably not going to think that he solved all the cases right, and your in-game confirmation is generally "of course you're right, you're Sherlock Holmes and you're ever so smart" even though the solutions can be divergent and in at least one case I felt like Sherlock was ignoring a possible solution because he was discounting the possibility that a girl was involved. That can bother people who want definitive answers and puzzle solutions, but I think on a meta level, it works really well for this game.
This Sherlock is young, arrogant and traumatized in a way that just feels right.
Mycroft is also in this game. He's barely in it, in terms of voice acting and dialog and interaction, and yet his presence is really strong, and it is absolutely beautiful. I really love the Mycroft that they set up. He's a man who's raised his younger brother from the age of 11, and really, he's almost certainly traumatized too, just with a much better stiff upper lip than Sherlock himself.
I can't speak for most of the rest of the series. I enjoyed the remake of Sherlock Holmes the Awakened, which is a Cthulhu crossover and not open world. These games are made by Ukranian developers and The Awakened was developed during the war with Russia.
I've probably gushed enough, but if there are more questions, I'd be happy to answer them!
Ah. There's one caveat: It's also Victorian. IIRC, there's an in-game content warning about racism, classism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. As well as those, the game includes themes of child abuse, mental illness, the shit medical attitudes of the 1800s, and even some animal cruelty. And, obviously, murder. If those will stop you from playing, best to know about them now.

I have thoughts. So, when Sherlock says it took Eurus 5 minutes to do all of this to them and puts the gun down, he looks towards John and gives him this look. We have seen John and Sherlock communicate with no words before in TRF scene in the courtroom and have secret signals.
Sherlock tries to hint to John what he's planning to do. John gets it. Mycroft doesn't get it, that's why he steps forward and shakes his head and is visibly more upset than John. That is his real reaction. Why would John look at Mycroft? To see if he gets it as well, but he doesn't.
But because they chose to do this in a way that is so subtle as opposed to John's insistence that Sherlock not shoot Mycroft, it gives off the impression that he cares more about Mycroft being shot than Sherlock.
All I fucking want is for someone to explain in what universe, after everything they’ve been through together, does Sherlock point a gun to himself
and John is like
instead of stopping him?!
And in what universe is John fucking drowning
And Sherlock’s like
And people are wondering why are so many fans upset, why they were rooting for this to be a fake episode? Yeah, among other shitload of things, you just basically killed these two characters and everything they used to stand for, for the sake of a soap opera/horror movie plot, no big deal. Why, why do this? If you love these characters you wouldn’t do this. I’m just so sad, this is not “Sherlock” anymore. I have the right to be upset, my favorite show has been mutilated beyond recognition. damn right I’m gonna rant about it.

Ship ask game for Sakuplumeria
Ship It - Albert/Bond
What made you ship it?
I love that this was asked because my current WIP (obligatory plug) features Bond as Albert's confidante, and the chapter I'm working on at the moment has more of that, and it's had me thinking of how overlooked this combo is.
Bond's entire introduction to the group is through Albert: Albert is the one assigned to hunt down Adler, Albert is the one who slips Adler the invite and interacts with them at the ball, Albert is the one in the confessional, Albert is the one who gives him the name "James." That's the name Albert had first, that he gifted to William and Louis as part of cementing their ties, so it's really interesting that Bond gets that too. I also think they have similarities: that they use fame and title and charm to navigate through upper class social life for their own ends. While Albert's sexuality is entirely a group-workshopped headcanon, they both have that seductive edge to them. Bond could pull off *finger to lips, head tilt* "I wish for your silence" and Albert could pull off *naked in a bathtub* "Hurry up and come meet me, Mr Holmes." 😂 I don't know that I see these two as ever falling in love? But I think they'd make absolutely stellar Friends With Benefits and also could cheerfully cause nations to collapse on a whim.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
I think Bond could really help Albert let loose a little? Bond has a certain lively joy about him (here's a favourite meta about that) that kind of makes me want to ship him with any of the Moriarty brothers, because they're such miserable wet cats and he's just living and delighting in living.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Bond is a man, but I headcanon him as having very little dysphoria and occasionally having a good time presenting as a woman for shits and giggles (I think Irene's reappearance in chapter 60 is good basis for that), so I do think Albert and Bond would sometimes crash parties as a straight-presenting couple just to throw the rumour mill into a tizzy. Especially post-timeskip, when "Irene" has made a public appearance as back from the dead and Albert has been pardoned (?) after his brother was revealed to be the Lord of Crime. Imagine the tabloids. Imagine the broken-hearted girls who'd never given up on being Countess Moriarty, and the panicked noblemen who'd thought their secrets died with Adler. Albert and Bond would just love the chaos, I think.

You know how I complain about the lack of emotional resolution in The Final Problem? It's not an issue exclusive to that episode.
In The Great Game, there is an explosion at 221B, when John enters the room expecting to see a hurt or injured Sherlock, but instead, we see Mycroft and Sherlock talk about a case.
Why is this interesting? We know Mycroft went straight there after he heard about the explosion, most likely for reasons other than the case like, idk, to check if his brother is still alive? We are not shown that. If Mycroft showed any concern towards him, it is entirely off screen.
We are shown Mycroft watch Sherlock get tortured and speak to him in bad Serbian (why was the Serbian so bad? Was it supposed to be bad?), mirror the actions of his torturers and refer to his torture as a "holiday."
What are we not shown? Mycroft helping him out of the chains. Arranging for him to get his wounds mended. Any possible show of concern. See a pattern?
The Great Game was mostly from John's pov, so it makes sense there. John wasn't there. Here you have no excuse, as season 3 is mostly Sherlock's pov.
So why did they not show us that? They were afraid of consequences. It's the same reason the Lazarus explanation felt like a retcon and a cop-out to people.
I saw a hypothesis that just as Option 1 was Anderson's fantasy and Option 2 was the fangirl fantasy, Lazarus is Sherlock's fantasy.
In this version, he had the events perfectly in control, Mycroft didn't cause him to get screwed over and it was all intentional and they worked together, John, Mrs H and Lestrade were not in any real danger, Sherlock didn't get as emotional on the roof and didn't cry etc. etc. etc.
You see if Mycroft was to blame for the fall, if he was what truly led to Sherlock's downfall and it wasn't all premeditated, you would have to address that.
Sherlock would be angry with him. He would resent him for something he actually did as opposed to a vague reason we were never given or explained.
You wanted to play with emotional stakes, but you didn't want any relationships to actually evolve.
That's why John's beating of Sherlock is not addressed in The Final Problem even when it would be relevant.
That's why Molly is shown back in 221B at the end when the last time we saw her, Eurus put her friendship with Sherlock in serious jeopardy if not outright kill it.
That's why they wrote Rosie into the show and then did next to nothing with her.
That's why 221B explodes and then is rebuilt in a quick montage at the end of the episode.
That's why Eurus is put back into the very same prison she had no issue mindfucking everyone in and escaping from.
That's why we don't see Sherlock reacting to Mycroft being freed or have them discuss events of Sherrinford.
Because they wanted to put these characters through hell, but not actually have anything change.

I never noticed that Mycroft was always on Sherlock's left...
Does he embody the left side (logic, between others...) of Sherlock's brain? Or/and where his heart will always lie despite their conflicted relationship?
Meanwhile, John stands most of the time on Sherlock's right. It can't be always of course because it would feel forced, but look:
John = the right part of Sherlock's brain, he embodies the emotional side of him
Mycroft = the left side of his brain, he embodies the logical, calculating side of him.
For years, Sherlock only had Mycroft in his life; the left side, the logical, calculating side of him dominated completely because he didn't know anything else, or rather he pretended he didn't know for fear of suffering. Then John came along and slowly but surely, the right part of his brain was no longer crushed and silenced by its dominating twin. At the end of Sherlock 4, Sherlock's almost balanced.
God I love this show ...
(in case it needs to be said: it is NOT a JohnLock meta. Emotions are multiple, please don't put words in my mouth. Thank you 💜)

A classic! I haven't read many Bond/Sherlock crossovers, but it always amuses me to imagine Bond's reaction to this news. I imagine it would be similar to his reaction about Q not being able to fly. A dry, exasperated, tired, "Of course he is." 🙄
I know there are other 'Q is a Holmes' enjoyers following me, so feel free to use this post as a jumping off point to chat. I can imagine there's a whole world of discussion to be had there!
#meta mondays#headcanons#james bond#quartermaster#also you don't have to apologise for being on anon!#it's all good#thanks for sending in your thoughts

FEMTOBER BLOG: Centennials & Strikes
What do Sherlock Holmes fighting dinosaurs and French women having sex with cars have in common?
And what is Freddy Krueger's connection to Halloweentown?
Every Femtober, I try to include a category or two that's relevant to the events of the year so far. The double WGA/SAG-AFTRA Strike is already unprecedented, but for it to happen on the centennial of two much-maligned studios is deeply ironic.
This year, I watched two movies from non-AMPTP studios, and two movies from Disney and Warner Brothers. Unfortunately due to the inherent lack of women directing for studios, finding a good match for Disney and WB was difficult, but the indie studio films also presented an interesting challenge.
Though women-directed films at Disney and WB are among the highest grossing of all time, the number of films women are directing for these studios is very limited. And on top of that, horror is an even smaller number, particularly in Disney’s family-friendly catalog.
I wrote previously about my Warner Brothers pick Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, which I had already seen. While the title of the film is pretty telling, it does ultimately feel like a bit of a franchise killer. Rachel Talalay really wanted to make something different, and she sure as hell did it, but at the cost of lessening some of the horror of the franchise. It feels very meta, but it's really not until New Nightmare that meta horror really takes shape. The overall story is lackluster, but it's a worthy experiment into a new approach to the genre that's largely unappreciated.
My Disney pick, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, was also a rewatch but one I had not seen in quite some time. I can't say I really have fond memories of Halloweentown II specifically, but I do remember Disney Channel playing the commercial for it constantly.
What was most surprising to me about this DCOM was how scary it actually was. I initially struggled between choosing this movie, Hocus Pocus 2, and Ravenous. They all would be rewatches, but Hocus Pocus 2 is just bad, and as much as I love Ravenous it's already been in 2 previous Femtobers. I was worried listing Halloweentown II as a horror was a bit of a copout, but it's definitely horror by way of kid camp. There's something Tim Burton-esque about the first and second installments, and in general the Halloween DCOMs always tended to give me the creeps. It wasn't until I was in high school that I rewatched Don't Look Under the Bed, which scared the crap out of me as a kid.
For having such a tame reputation, Disney has some surprisingly effective scares. On top of that, the thing that really struck me about Halloweentown II is how uncomfortable the movie is. Kids are familiar with the joy and colors of the first movie, and in this one they've been replaced by bleak gray and monotone. It's definitely unsettling.
I have to admit, for my non-struck studio picks I wanted to be as meme-y as possible. The idea of putting an Asylum film in the same category as a Palme D'Or winner from Neon was hilarious to me.
Unfortunately for me, the meme wasn't really worth it. Asylum's take on Sherlock Holmes from Rachel Lee Goldenberg is simply dreadful (so much so that I turned it off after 30 minutes - OOPS!). Which really makes me scratch my head, because while Goldenberg has directed the Asylum films Sherlock Holmes and Sunday School Musical, she's also directed the very charming HBO Max film Unpregnant. Hopefully that means she's broken out of the Asylum, so to speak, because it was a really great film! (Incidentally, she also directed one of my all time favorite Lifetime Christmas Movies, Love at the Christmas Table - also a very good movie!)
Titane is a whole different beast. I wasn't sure what to expect; everything I had seen and everyone I had talked to warned me that Titane was not for the weak of heart - or stomach. But, I heard similar things about Raw, which I didn't find unpalatable at all.
If I may go on a bit of a tangent, I feel like with horror, oftentimes there's kind of an all-or-nothing stance on what we can watch. If you've seen one you've seen them all. Well in any film, but I think in particular horror, there are things that some people just don't want to see, for one reason or another. Maybe this isn't "normal" behavior, but I'm not really that concerned about spoilers a lot of the time, so I tend to seek out the content of a movie before watching. Too many times I've been triggered by something I just didn't want to see. So maybe it's okay to normalize that idea a little bit. Horror is visceral and scary, but it's also fun, you know?
That being said, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on what to expect from Titane. The plot, however, threw me for a bit of a loop. Everything I had seen about it really only focused on the first 20 minutes, when the real story unfolds after that. Titane isn't the best film I've ever watched, but how exhilarating is it to find a movie that goes in a direction you never thought possible?
I also find it interesting that because Titane is regarded as being so transgressive, none of the plot really ended up getting spoiled for me, because I never really saw anybody talking about it. Titane is distributed by Neon, and along with A24, those were the indie studios I sought out to complete this category. And you would think that indie studios would have a few more titles to choose from directed by women. Of course, this is just a sampling of two studios, but I did feel a bit wanting by the selection, particularly with A24. I can't help but feel a little discouraged that even the indie studios are becoming "mainstream" in their demographics.
There are plenty of indie horror films directed by women, but quality and availability tend to make these films suffer. I'm not so sure there's an easy fix besides: let women make more movies. Hopefully the success of Barbie, and the potential success of Wish and The Marvels will move the needle a bit.
Other Disney female-directed horror films: • Clock, directed by Alexis Jacknow • Ravenous, directed by Antonia Bird • Hocus Pocus 2, directed by Anne Fletcher
Other Warner Brothers female-directed horror/horror-adjacent films: • Red Riding Hood, directed by Catherine Hardwicke • Embrace of the Vampire, directed by Anne Goursaud • The Banana Splits Movie, directed by Danishka Esterhazy • Daphne & Velma, directed by Suzi Yoonessi

What I found funny here when I first watched this episode is that Sherlock was so smug here:
And then after a while in the episode, when Sherlock returned the hat to Howard and Howard was like :
So Sherlock still lost and Mycroft did in fact win.
Meaning, Mycroft’s streak didn’t change a bit 🤣

I just wanna take a second to look at this:
I don't want to get into a fight with OP and reblog this from there. I know I'm not going to change their mind. Years of internet exchanges has taught me that the hard way.
However, I do want to take this as an opportunity to meta analyze Bobby and why he goes after people the way he does.
Bobby would use people's weaknesses, like being poor, because yes, copaganda based on Sherlock Holmes, but also because he would see their backgrounds as no excuse for the crimes they committed.
Bobby didn't grow up well off. He had a father that was absent and possibly at least emotionally abusive when they had interacted. He witnessed a horrible marriage. His mother was sick. He struggles financially. He has issues with relating people as his authentic self. He doesn't like authority. He had a brother that was a severe addict who of course lied constantly.
None of those things led him to do things that were illegal. No murders, no financial crimes, etc. None of those things lead him to intentionally hurting people in a criminal capacity. So he has no sympathy for those that do.
One of the things I see mentioned is autistics have a strong sense of justice. Maybe for him, especially at that time before the internet existed, and of course way before it exists as it does today, and social media, maybe his sense of justice was all about going after people who chose to be violent criminals.
Literally Declan said Bobby could have gone either way. With his background, Bobby could have become some form of criminal.
Bobby chose to do what was right and stop bad guys instead of turning out like one, and he did that the way he knew he could. By understanding them and using what he understood about them to manipulate these people into fucking up.
That's what interrogators do. I'm not talking about cops necessarily here, there are people literally trained to or develop a talent for interrogation. They do what they can to find things out from people in interrogations. Chase Hughes is one of those guys. He will learn everything he can about the person he goes into interrogate before speaking with them. His skill set he developed for interrogation happened during his time in the military, and if I remember right, several other of the top behavioral analyst in the world had that path as well.
Tl;dr: So, yeah, Bobby uses people's backgrounds to manipulate them into confessing. For the most part, these are bad people. And if they aren't bad people exactly, they sure as hell did something criminal that harmed others. And often their backgrounds are no excuse for the crimes they commit, just like Bobby's bad background would have never been an excuse for anything he could have done to harm others in an illegal capacity. And he knows that. So he sees their backgrounds as fair game to manipulate them to the point of getting confessions. It's what irl interrogators do.
DNI: If you just want to come at this with "ItS jUsT cOpAgAnDa!" This is a meta post.
#(And I do feel like they had at least a bit more evidence than people say#they just also got confessions to seal the deal.)#i mean he's good at gettinn confessions so why not get them?#criminal intent#bobby goren#ci meta#bobby goren meta

I know you love Molly, so any additional thoughts or meta you want to put down here?
I mean...so much. And yet, it's all vanished now that I have your ask in front of me.
Molly is just...wonderful. Like, when I first watched Sherlock, I related to her immediately. She's an average-looking, relatively intelligent, empathetic person. She doesn't really have any special skills or knowledge as such (obviously I'm aware she's a pathologist and knows a lot about science and such, but anyone in that type of job is bound to have that sort of knowledge) like the other characters. This is not an insult to her (and I happen to think Louise Brealey and Molly are VERY pretty), but that's to say that she's just a lovely, normal person. Not the smartest or prettiest.
And that's me, that's me all over. I don't find myself attractive, despite people telling me I am pretty, but sometimes I love the way I look, particularly in certain clothes. Otherwise I wear what I'm comfy in - as Molly does, and I love her patterned shirts and comfy cardigans and jumpers - and I'm relatively happy in myself. I'm aware I have a pretty good brain, and can be considered smart and intelligent, in certain areas more than others, but I'll never be the cleverest and that's cool with me. So I saw myself in Molly a lot, and still do.
(Also the obsession with one Mr Sherlock Holmes is another thing we have in common - we fancy unattainable men.)
And that's a lovely thing to see in a female character, particularly in a show like this. Because usually female characters in media are unbelievably beautiful (and often sexually confident, which Molly and myself definitely aren't, although my thing is I'm asexual and not interested in sex) and super clever and have extreme and amazing skill sets.
I mean, even if we look at the other women in Sherlock, we have examples of this - Irene Adler is super sexy and beautiful and she's also incredibly intelligent, smart enough to beat Sherlock. Mary (who I think is personally gorgeous) is a super duper secret assassin who's also got a massive intellect. Eurus runs rings around her brothers in terms of intelligence. My point is, these female characters, while awesome and badass, are like most other female characters - extremely sexy, pretty, smart and skilled. But not everyone is! Some people are average. Average looking, of average intelligence etc. (I am not saying that Molly isn't beautiful because she is, nor am I dismissing her intelligence). And Molly is able to be just a normal woman, and she is never treated as lesser for it.
It's one of the reasons I love her story arc with Sherlock so much - she is just so ordinary and average and Sherlock at first is a complete DICKHEAD to her, and uses her crush on him to manipulate her into doing what he wants. But over time, he comes to see that Molly is clever in her own way, beautiful in her own way, and a person whom he cares about. And she may not be Hollywood gorgeous like Irene Adler or have an amazing and deadly skillset like Mary, but she is still a valuable and GOOD person to have around, and a worthy friend.
And it's so important to be able to have female characters that aren't just super skilled and clever and sexy - normal women who do their jobs well and wear comfy clothes and are awkward and shy and have weird crushes and react like we would to situations they're in. And Molly embodies that and that is why I love her.
She represents me and all the girls like me. The normal, average girls. And she shows us that just because we're 'average', doesn't mean we're any less amazing.

Hi Steph! I hope you are doing okay.
I read this in a meta somewhere, how in TEH in one of the restaurants, where John asks who knew Sherlock was alive, Mary saying "He would have needed a confidant" in reference to Mycroft is the worst possible thing to say and I didn't get why. Yes, it is rude and unnecessary and she inserts herself into the situation. But why is it so bad? And then I was making lunch and it hit me, and I thought of you, so I thought to share.
She implied John wouldn't have made for a good confidant.
At this point, John has no idea Mycroft always knew Sherlock was alive. From John's perpective, Mycroft screwed Sherlock over, both brothers talk about how resentful they are of each other and generally don't act like they are close at all (although they actually are. I am saying that because this deceived me at first as well, until I saw a Moffat quote saying Mycroft is close to his brother and a review of TEH where a person said they already knew the Holmes brothers were close.)
And yet still, Sherlock would still tell Mycroft first and go for his help first even though he told John they can't go to him for help with The Fall?
So in John's mind, Sherlock trusted his brother he does not even get along with and who is to blame for the whole thing, rather than him. And Mary spells that out, tells him he still makes for a better confidant than John ever could.
Hey Lovely!!
YEAH, Mary is actually the WORST person to John, and all her manipulation is to subtly keep her control on him, because she was already seeing John's growing interest in forgiving Sherlock and losing interest in her. She constantly tries to drive a wedge between them (that comment to John, for instance, and to Sherlock – her ribbing him ALL through the reception party in TSo3), makes John feel inferior to both Sherlock and herself, and in turn it fucks with John's head and his self-esteem.
She's an emotional manipulator who relies on John being emotionally compromised to keep him as her trophy.
So yeah, I feel terrible for John, and S4 was supposed to make him "the hero" of sorts, as a way to bookend with S1's opening scene of a sad, insecure, unconfident John. That's what I think, anyway :)

Utilidade & Vontade!
Por: Fred Borges
Homenagem a: Alexander McQueen, Ultraje a Rigor e Titãs.
Madonna, Björk, Beyoncé, Fergie, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Br. Pionório, Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anna Paquin, Katie Holmes, Camilla Belle, Michelle Obama e o Rei Charles III.
As coleções incluem mulheres pronto-a-vestir(Prêt-à- Porter), pronto-a-vestir masculino, acessórios, óculos e fragrâncias (Reino MyQueen 2003 e 2005).
Podemos!Yes, we can!
A arte diz!
Expressa!
Alexander McQueen disse!
Ultraje a Rigor e Titãs disseram!

[tv review] tng 6x12 "ship in a bottle" (1993)
apparently the creative team loved the sherlock holmes setting but wasn’t able to return to it for quite a while thanks to a protracted legal dispute with the doyle estate, but once that was settled we saw them pick back up the thread of the sentient professor moriarty! they even made the long gap between the two episodes into a story beat with moriarty being pissed that picard & co appeared to have forgotten about him for all that time.
but undoubtedly the most memorable thing about this episode is the “we’re actually still on the holodeck!” twist. that’s just an iconic tng moment.
this isn’t a complaint exactly, but i think it’s pretty hysterical that when captain picard & co are faced with the seeming impossibility of a holodeck character literally walking off of the holodeck and existing in the real world, captain picard takes the time to lecture him about how crimes are still not allowed in the 24th century??? like, he literally sits him down and is sternly like “DON’T DO ANY CRIMES!!!” and it’s like, i really don’t think this is our biggest concern right now my dude? it just makes me laugh inappropriately every time.
but yeah, i have only two actually more substantial complaints about this episode? the first is that given her character’s rapport with moriarty in “elementary, dear data” i’d be pretty miffed if diana muldaur wasn’t offered a guest starring role in this. (and i haven’t seen any mention that she was.) that’s just a huge missed opportunity if they didn’t even try. but even if muldaur the actress was approached & declined, i think pulaski the character at least deserved a name drop here.
the other is that they play this ending like it’s a happily ever after sort of thing, but they’ve trapped a sentient being in a fictional world and lied to him about it? that’s… actually kinda dire, guys! you’re kinda literally doing the same thing as the bad guys in the matrix! like i do think they did their best, but idk, i’d like their tone to be less “we did good!” and more “we did our best but it kinda sucks and we’ll have folks working on this because it really sucks for him.”
okay actually one more thing, but this isn’t actually a problem with this episode? it’s more of a meta problem. i really wish we had had an episode between “chain of command” and this? maybe one where picard is taking some time off and riker is in command?
like, we don’t have to super dwell on what picard is going through or make it the focus of the episode, i get that tng likes to keep things light and i actually kinda love that because it makes stuff like “chain of command” stand out all the more? you can totally just have it be a riker episode or whatever, we don’t need to have him wrestle his older brother in the vineyard mud again.
just, having picard be so actively involved in this episode and making literally zero mention of what he’s just been through doesn’t really sit well with me? and the fact that it literally never comes up again for the rest of the series, all the tng movies, and two seasons of picard but his trauma from being assimilated comes up multiple times is just a rather glaring omission in my opinion.
but yeah, nitpicks aside, this is a seriously great episode. definitely one of the ones i’m always looking forward to.
s-rank
