Photo of the Holmes brothers as children at the seaside.
On the right is the one recently released by Sherlocked (London 2016) as a prop for the show (x)
It gives us a better (closer-up / clearer) view of the one we’ve seen from Sherlock’s bedroom at 221b (the one on the left).
Thanks to @sherlock-little-weed ‘s eagle eyes, who pointed out that the Mycroft’s head is blended into the landscape in the 221b photo due to extreme blurriness.
Probably on an unrelated note, S4E03 was shot at Tenby, a beach.
[Edited to add: Per @thesetison , there are no pirates.]
What does it mean? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Speculation Cove is lovely this time of year. The waters are warm and crystal clear …

the thing is, the huge plot twist for S4 strikes me as so inherently sexist.
like, they planned the whole series around the fact that they dropped a hint of another sibling in s3 and they thought everyone would assume it was a *brother*
and they went: GASP! PLOT TWIST: SISTER
like, how COOL will that be when the secret sibling turns out to be a GIRL
NO ONE WILL EXPECT A GIRL
WE WILL BLOW THEIR MINDS
and that basically normalizes the idea that people don’t expect women to be the plot twist. people don’t think of women.
and then they made a whole three episodes just to build up to this woman surprise
(i have a better surprise: write a show that fucking makes sense)
in the abominable bride, the shocker is that women are responsible, women did a thing. and they thought they were making such a pro-woman statement but honestly dressing women up in KKK robes and hiding them in a basement and visually hinting that women banding together in groups is scary and cultish (hello fandom) is not particularly pro-woman.
how shitty is it that they think “it’s a girl” is a shock

Both 'Please' and 'Greg' are unusual words in their respective contexts, meant specifically to highlight the sincerity of the sentiment being conveyed.
It's also a classic Holmes Brothers parallel - of saying little and meaning much. :)

"You were always the grown up"
It is mid-afternoon on a rainy day.
A small boy of about 4 arrives home. He shakes out his umbrella and leaves it on the front step. He removes his pirate hat and raincoat, and hangs them up near the door. He keeps his satchel. Beneath the hat he has a head of dark curls, his eyes are a piercing shade of grey-blue something or other.
“Mummy, daddy I’m home.”
Little Sherlock goes to the kitchen. A blonde woman in her thirties is standing in the middle of the room, hands waving at invisible numbers. She is busy solving equations in her Mind Cabin-in-the-woods.
Near the sink, gazing out the window into the garden is a tall man, in his late thirties. He holds his hands behind his back and rocks back on his feet, humming Chattanooga Choo Choo. At the table is a boy of around 11. He is rotund, hands on his lap, face down in a Victoria sponge.
“Mummy, look what I made today.”
Sherlock holds up a childish painting of a house with four stick figures. Mummy is unresponsive, Sherlock gives up and moves to the man at the window.
“Daddy, look what I made today.”
Daddy Holmes gives a start and turns around in surprise, looking for whoever just spoke. Eventually he remembers to look down.
“Oh, hello darling. Did you have a good day at school?”
“Yes, daddy. I made this. And we played hide and seek at playtime.”
“That’s wonderful darling. Is that a painting of all of us?”
“Yes, daddy. See, there’s you and mummy, and that’s me and Mycroft.”
“Marvellous. But you’ve forgotten your sister.”
“Who?”
“Never mind. What else did you do today?”
Sherlock empties his satchel onto the kitchen table. He pulls out folders full of paper.
“Well, I thought I’d make a simple poulet aigu de tarragon for dinner. You and mummy can open that Bordeaux you’ve been talking about. And I’ll need both your signatures on a few things. I’ve put easy to see tabs on all of the relevant sections so it should be quite straightforward.”
Sherlock arranges things into separate piles.
“I’ve filled in the tax returns. Fairly simple, you can just sign those. Now these, these and this pile. This is to transfer the house insurance. All the information is there if you want to look but I’ve gone through the options and this provider is miles better than our current policy. This is the invoice that electrician sent in complete contradiction to his initial quote. I’ve had a word with our solicitor and I’ll be meeting with him on Thursday. And this is an absence form for school, so I can meet the solicitor on Thursday.”
Daddy Holmes looks distressed.
“Do I need to read all this, sweetheart? Only I was going to watch The Good Life this evening.”
Sherlock puts on a chefs hat and an apron. He pulls out a fake moustache from the pocket and slaps it above his upper lip.
“Just sign the things, daddy.”
“Sign?”
Sherlock sighs a long suffering sigh. He has been here all too often. He pulls out a pen from his apron pocket and helpfully curls his father’s fingers around it, then mimes a signature.
Fin.

We need less power-couples and more fail-couples. A pair that individually are disasters but together make everything even worse. Not in a toxic sense, they are just both so lacking in common sense that being together creates a shenanigans feedback-loop. They will become everyone's problem.

Listen I'm aware you all want a piece of this. I understand I'm a hot commodity here on tumblr dot com. But even setting aside wealth and immortality, my husband squeezes the absolute fattest ass you've ever seen through literally billions of chimney flues every December 25th. And every other night of the year, he's with me. And somehow you hoes think you can teach me a trick I haven't seen before? Dream on.

So in reference to this post and my tags in the reblog, here's me attempting to clarify some things. I doubt this post will gain any tracture, but to not waste anyone's time, I am a proshipper, in favor of people freely shipping all of the ships even the gross icky ones without fear of censorship and harassment. If you try to argue with me (on this statement , friendly discussion and disagreement on any of the points below are welcome), I will block you because I recently discovered blocking people feels good and I am tired of coming across antis everywhere no matter how desperately I try to avoid them.
Anyway, let's begin:
I will sometimes come across something and will not be able to explain why it bothers me other than "the vibe is off", and this is one of those times or I guess it used to be because I will at least make an attempt.
Now to acknowledge that the first two statements (well they are technically questions) will always sound at least mildly homophobic to me. There are a lot of more qualified and eloquent people who will be able to explain why and this does have to do with the whole fandom vs the actual media where while there are more m/m than m/f ships on fanfiction websites (with f/f being the last represented, which is probably also a topic for someone more qualified and eloquent than me), I don't think it even needs to be stated there are way more romances in media between a man and a woman than about two men.
There are way more m/m and f/f friendships in the media than there are m/m and f/f romances. So let's focus on the general "why can't they just be friends?" Because wording matters here.
If someone stated:
"I think our society is too preoccupied with romantic relationships and should have pieces of media focusing more on a central platonic friendship."
That would be a statement I agree with. The thing is...
It's not really about media.
It's about fandom.
It reminds me of a sentiment that is very familiar to me.
"Why do you have to sexualize everything?"
It's kind of attacking the idea of shipping itself. This is my opinion. I will circle back to the "bad vibes feel". It's subjective. Maybe other people feel the same and maybe don't. In the case of the first two statements (the one with same gender examples) it feels even more homophobic because it equates gay love with gay sex (with an added bonus of asexual erasure).
Now I consider myself a shipper at my core. I don't need ships to enjoy something, but I tend to think like one.
But not all people do. And it's kind of a thing you have to experience in order to be able to explain.
To me, the answer to a question of "why don't you ship character A and character B" is because I don't.
Just because someone lists a bunch of reasons why a ship is compelling, doesn't mean I will suddenly start thinking about them cuddling in bed while I'm trying to sleep. It doesn't give me soft squishy feelings. I won't squeel over it. No argument one makes is going to change that.
And it works the opposite way. Why do you ship that? Well, it's because I'm cursed and the universe hates me. It's that sentiment why I tried to un-ship two characters when my only crime was that they were platonic friends and meant to end up with different people (well, one of them, the other one ended up single after a series of tragic romances while being the only queer main character on the show).
...And then I went online and found out they are the most popular ship by... a lot and that the writers almost made them canon but didn't.
And I used to feel so dirty about it! I felt like I was corrupting something pure and ruining a beautiful friendship with my fantasies.
It feels very weird to me when people talk about shipping something like it's a conscious choice.
It's why I don't like that the feeling of enjoying something in the way I describe is mixed in with wanting something to be canon, or thinking it should be canon. Discussions of relationships in a piece of media in terms of how it would affect the characters and the story overall are always interlocked with shipping and then the shippers' status as shippers is used to discredit their opinions with "well of course you saying that, it's because you ship them".
Maybe this genuinely feels different for different people. I don't want to deny anyone a right to their experience but I know mine isn't just me.
And it brings me to question I always asked myself about antis.
"Do they want those people to stop or do they want them to feel shitty about themselves?"
Because I don't think they think they will genuinely change something here by stating an obvious fact someone is already aware of in a hostile manner. They just want to express their outrage because they are certain they are in the right.
That's the end of this... thing. There are some things I want to say, have always wanted to say and tried saying them but they always end up scrapped because I fail at saying what I mean and sometimes I fail at the meaning part itself.
Some of these things are just... vibes. I could be wrong about them. I could be wrong about what's behind them. But I keep coming back to them.
I wished I could find a post that says it all perfectly and just reblog that one. I wish that for a lot of things.

I feel like with the new ~fandom drama~ or whatever going around, I should re-introduce my favorite theory of fandom, which I call the 1% Theory.
Basically, the 1% Theory dictates that in every fandom, on average, 1% of the fans will be a pure, unsalvageable tire fire. We’re talking the people who do physical harm over their fandom, who start riots, cannot be talked down. The sort of things public news stories are made of. We’re not talking necessarily bad fans here- we’re talking people who take this thing so seriously they are willing to start a goddamn fist fight over nothing. The worst of the worst.
The reason I bring this up is because the 1% Theory ties into an important visual of fandom knowledge- that bigger fandoms are always perceived as “worse”, and at a certain point, a fandom always gets big enough to “go bad”. Let me explain.
Say you have a small fandom, like 500 people- the 1% Theory says that out of those 500, only 5 of them will be absolute nutjobs. This is incredibly manageable- it’s five people. The fandom and world at large can easily shut them out, block them, ignore their ramblings. The fandom is a “nice place”.
Now say you have a medium sized fandom- say 100,000 people. Suddenly, the 1% Theory ups your level of calamity to a whopping 1000 people. That’s a lot. That’s a lot for anyone to manage. It is, by nature of fandom, impossible to “manage” because no one owns fan spaces. People start to get nervous. There’s still so much good, but oof, 1000 people.
Now say you have a truly massive fandom- I use Homestuck here because I know the figures. At it’s peak, Homestuck had approximately FIVE MILLION active fans around the globe.
By the 1% Theory, that’s 50,000 people. Fifty THOUSAND starting riots, blackmailing creators, contributing to the worst of the worst of things.
There’s a couple of important points to take away here, in my opinion.
1) The 1% will always be the loudest, because people are always looking for new drama to follow.
2) Ultimately, it is 1%. It is only 1%. I can’t promise the other 99% are perfect, loving angels, but the “terrible fandom” is still only 1% complete utter garbage.
3) No fandom should ever be judged by their 1%. Big fandoms always look worse, small fandoms always look better. It’s not a good metric.
So remember, if you’re ever feeling disheartened by your fandom’s activity- it’s just 1%, people. Do your part not to be a part of it.
