"Hellish Todoroki Family - Finale" rant

I am indeed very unhappy and discontent with the "Hellish Todoroki Family - Finale" chapter. Although I'm relieved that Touya is still alive and had the opportunity to confront his family, the execution of the chapter felt incredibly rushed and rough around the edges. With only four chapters remaining, it's hard to imagine how the story can be steered back to a satisfying conclusion that honors or resolves the villains' plotlines in any meaningful way 🤷

Touya's journey has been one of the most poignant and complex within the series, and to see his narrative potentially reduced to a hurried wrap-up is disheartening. What he truly deserved was more than just a mere acknowledgment from his family; he deserved to forge a real connection, especially with his siblings. The hope now is that the author leaves his story at a point where Touya can just be—without the looming threat of a dramatic "funeral" or tearful "last goodbyes."

All Touya ever needed was the chance to heal with his family, to be acknowledged by them. It's these quieter, more personal reconciliations that could offer real closure to his character. Moving forward, I just want to believe that he, Rei, and Fuyumi can have those heartfelt conversations. I hope his family visits him every day, allowing them all to slowly 'rebuild' the bonds that were so tragically broken. It would be fitting for Touya’s family to consistently and supportively remain by his side, regardless of the time they have left together. I hope Shoto shares soba with his nii-san. This is what would truly honor Touya's character and provide a genuine resolution to his deeply emotional storyline.

I just find myself caught in a tumultuous middle ground between sheer joy and profound sadness.

Dude! Toya may be your sweet baby but he killed over 30 people in cold blood and be wasn’t even sorry about it. He got what he wanted so badly he was willing to exist in a living death for it. The rest of his life is back in a cage, but everything he wants is there and there is a promise of a final release so he isn’t stuck burning in that hellish family forever.

Meanwhile, Keigo is about to be the most (or second-most) hated and divisive public figure in Japan’s history, but he’s also probably the first in centuries who came from a poor, non-party-affiliated background (and he’s potentially an ethnic minority, depending on how you read him) with the perspective of the social roles of a victim, villain, civilian, Hero, and disgraced Hero, and is honest about the atrocious shit he’s done in his life. He’s batshit and about to enter a constant fight and tense dialogue with the old system and the current population, and his only real reward is that he gets to text his weird, disgraced, unknowing-surrogate amputee dad in the Old Folks Home For Burnout Failure Heroes as he sits by his wife, whom he does not love and who does not love him. Fuck if I know if he ever says a word to his mom again, but Keigo’s entire world is his job, not enjoying a life outside it, and he will never have the free time he dreamed of heroes having, though his efforts MIGHT allow future generations to do so and he will definitely do everything in his power to prevent the conditions for future Todoroki Family Situations AND Takami household situations. Keigo’s ending is a continued onslaught in all directions.

That said, I CANNOT BELIEVE they let him land that job at 23.

Final chapter of the Hellish Todoroki family

This chapter begins with the entire family reunited. Rei has serious burns on her face, Fuyumi has a few, Natsu got a haircut and Enji is all bandaged up.

They came to visit Toya...

The past was really complex, awful, hellish but Enji admitted to Toya: "So let's talk every day from now on. I know it took me too long, but I want to talk to you. You can hate me all you want. Say it all to me".

The rest of the family said they wanted to talk to Toya too... but the employee from the facility says they should stop for today, so as not to burden his heart too much.

The family started leaving but Shoto wanted to ask one and last thing...

As he always wanted to know, he asked Toya what is his favorite food. Toya answered "Soba". Shoto told him "Same"

Abd then, Toya's face change.

He remembered their fights during this war and then, called Shoto by his name and cried.

"Shoto.... I'm sorry..."

Seeing again Lady Nagant!

She said she wanted to stay a lit bit more in jail because she's afraid of being used once again.

And she jokes about the food she'll be eating funded by people's taxes, that making Hawks sticks his tongue out and calls her a villain.

Gentle and La Brava shouting each other's names. The cop told them that their help has been officially recognized, so they're free.

And in the last panel, we see Spinner unconscious in a hospital bed and the door to his room opening... who could is been?

My Hero Academia Chapter 426 Spoiler Talk: The Hellish Todoroki Family Conclusion

Whew, what a chapter goddamn. The Todoroki Family, especially Shoto (my favorite character 🩵), is one of my favorite and one of the best arcs in My Hero Academia. We all knew that their conclusion was coming this chapter and now that we're here, let's talk about it:

First off, in case you didn't hear, Weekly Shonen Jump and MHA mangaka, Kohei Horikoshi himself, confirmed that this is the first of the last 5 chapters of My Hero Academia. The series will end in early August with 430 chapters total if all goes well. I made a post about this when it was announced 2 days ago, but I want to briefly say that I am going to miss this series so much. It has had such an amazing impact on my life and surely saved me during many rough times. I will be so sad to see it end, but happy to see Horikoshi finish his beloved story on his own terms after 10 long years of publication. I will make sure to see it through myself.

We start off the chapter with a Todoroki Family reunion. We see the whole family about a month after the war ended. Everyone has burn scars of some kind now with Rei's having the largest that even covers the left side of her face like Shoto's and Endeavor's do ironically enough (I see what you did, Horikoshi). We don't see if Endeavor got any burn scars on his face because it's covered with bandages, but given he has the highest fire resistance next to Shoto, I doubt it.

Also, pretty much everyone got a haircut from their bodies getting torched trying to stop Touya (I'm going to call him that from here on). Fuyumi and Endeavor got a few inches off, Natsuo cut quite a bit off to the point where he's looking like his father again (oh, the irony), and Rei got a significant portion cut off to the point where it's back to the length it was when she and Enji first met. I think Shoto got a slight trim, but it's hard to tell. His hair is definitely scruffier than it was before, though. Honestly looks-wise, they all still look really good. Those Todoroki/Himura genes are doing good work.

But, despite those good looks, everyone is here to see Touya in his own operating tube (?). The doctor says that Touya's slowly dying and Endeavor tells everyone that he's retiring. Both things are what everyone saw coming. There was no way Endeavor was going back to hero work after everything that happened to him during the final war. It was just never possible. Even with prosthetics, I think his own mental state and where he is in life with his family would have prevented that from happening. I'm surprised that Touya is alive at all, but I'm glad to see that he's alive to see his family for a little longer before he eventually dies which I assume may happen in the final chapter of the series.

Also, Touya can still talk! Bro still can't move for shit, but he's conscious enough to talk to his family. He still hates his father and I get it. I don't think there was any way Touya was going to forgive his father after everything that happened. It's good to see that Endeavor still is trying to atone and wants to talk with Touya as much as he possibly can to his eldest son, but that won't change anything right now. The least Endeavor can do is listen to what Touya might want to say.

Fuyumi and Rei try to talk to Touya too, but the doctor is telling them that talking more would be a burden on Touya's heart. And then Shoto asks his oldest brother "What's your favorite food?" and Touya responds "Soba..." just like Shoto. I can't do this tonight, guys! I'm screaming, crying, throwing up! WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN! THEY COULD HAVE EATEN SOBA TOGETHER IN ANOTHER LIFE!!! HOW DARE YOU, HORIKOSHI! I'M IN YOUR WALLS 😭

And right as his family leaves his room, Touya slowly cries tears and says "Shoto... I'm sorry..." I don't need to explain this one. This fucking hurts. Touya has regrets, but it's too late. Touya may be Dabi the murderous villain who ruined a lot of lives, but he's also still a young man who deserved a better life than what was handed to him and does still care for his family even if only a little. All around a tragic character. If this is the last we see of Touya, I think it's a good albeit sad send-off.

As the Todorokis start to part ways, we get an idea of where their lives are going now:

1. Natsuo wants to start a family with his girlfriend (isn’t he only 20 btw and he started dating her like, what, a year ago? I get it, Natsuo, but this is too early don’t you think? 😭) but has no intention of having a ceremony for it specifically because he doesn't want her or himself to ever see Enji again. I don't blame him for this. Even though he helped stop Touya from literally exploding which did save his father, Natsuo made it clear from the start that he was never going to forgive Enji no matter how much he atoned. The reason why he was even born was because Enji wanted a perfect Ice/Fire child, but he didn't get that until Shoto was born afterwards. Natsuo saw Enji hurt and abuse his family for pretty much his entire life and Enji suddenly wanting to fix what he broke wasn't going to change Natsuo's mind on what he thought of his father. Cutting ties with his father is for the best. It's a miracle the rest of his family still want to see Enji at all, especially Shoto.

2. Fuyumi has also quit her teaching job, but a mother of one of her students found another one. This is also understandable. The public slander of her family on her is what probably pushed this and I'm sure her good reputation got inadvertently damaged from it. I hope she is treated better at her new job.

3. Enji is going got continue to pay for his crimes for the rest of his life whatever that takes. He even understands if the rest of his kids never want to see him again either. He will still do everything he can to make sure his kids are unharmed by the whole Dabi thing. He even accepts that he's going to dance with Touya in Hell one day. Honestly, regardless of what you think of Endeavor, I honestly think his atonement/development arc is one of the best in the series. He has definitely become a better man than what he started out as when we first met him during the Sports Festival Arc, but what I love about this is that Horikoshi never let him off the hook. He made Enji face his sins head-on and suffer through every consequence that came from his abusive actions. If Enji Todoroki is going to atone, he's going to atone the very, very hard way. Enji may be a better man and father, but that doesn't mean he's going to see the pearly gates when all is said and done. The best he can do is pay for his sins for the rest of his life and pray that Rei, Fuyumi, and Shoto don't leave him completely too.

4. And finally, there's my favorite, Shoto 🩵! He's going back to school and reassures his parents that he will be fine with his friends as they help him become who he wants to be. This essentially concludes Shoto's arc as well. When we first met him, he was a cold, anti-social teen who didn't want to make any friends. All he wanted to do was to become a hero with his ice alone to spite his father. Since then, he's opened up to his classmates, made amazing friends especially in Izuku, Iida, and Bakugo, rekindled his relationship with his mother and siblings, come to terms with his father and Touya, and finally accepted his Ice/Fire powers as his own. He says he's on the path to becoming the hero he wants to be, but I'd argue that he's already there. Again, it's an incredible development for Shoto and I think this is a great conclusion to his own character arc.

After Shoto leaves, we transition to Hawks! He's still there for Endeavor if he needs him which is nice. He's also the president of the Public Safety Commission! Dude may be Quirkless, but that doesn't mean he can't do anything! I'm happy to see him thrive in this new role of his and I hope he can reform the PSC into something good as opposed to how they treated him in the past.

We also catch up on Lady Nagant WHO IS NOT DEAD 🎊, but chooses to stay in prison for a bit longer. And Gentle and LaBrava are ok and free too! Good endings here!

Just want to point out that in the Ambush Sim AU that while Touya teaches piano to grade schoolers, the window of opportunity to do so is very small. Most Japanese schools end the day around 3 in the afternoon (taking into account piano lessons are an extracurricular activity,) so depending on when dinner happens in the Todoroki household, he really only has two to three hours to teach. He's able to schedule more students during weekends and holiday breaks, but since he's otherwise unemployed, he has a lot of time to himself during the day.

So as shown in Chapter 6, he does most of the housework.

Endeavor doesn't do housework, he probably barred Shouto from doing any in favor of the rigorous training schedule, and the only reason Fuyumi and Touya alternate cooking meals is because she enjoys cooking and insists on that schedule. Other than that, Touya is the one taking care of cleaning, laundry, gardening, errands, and other assorted household maintenance. Even if Endeavor asks Fuyumi to run an errand in town or pick something up, Touya's usually the one to take care of it on her behalf since she's the one with the full-time teaching job.

However, by the Ambush Simulation: The Hellish Todoroki Family installment, he no longer lives at home. So everything he took care of in that house is going to start piling up with Shouto and Natsuo living on campus and Fuyumi and Endeavor working full time.

Fuyumi: *actually triggered to annoyance* I don’t know what to tell you, Dad. My housekeeper brother no longer lives here.

Endeavor: *realizing he's shot himself in the foot*

Touya: *diligently taking care of his Fukuoka residence and torn between feeling bad for Fuyumi and feeling vindicated that Father Dearest may finally be acknowledging he was an under-appreciated son*

Revisiting the beginning of the Todoroki family arc is so wild after chapter 426

because virtually nothing had even changed.

Everything Natsuo points out here remains true. Enji still treats his broken family like a challenge to face head-on and overcome. Rei and Fuyumi are still kindly pretending nothing is wrong for the sake of keeping the family whole, not adressing their own feelings of hurt. Enji is still the one who decides how the family's future is going to look like, one-sidedly forcing his chosen way of "atonement" - he never actually asks Touya a single question, their entire interaction in the chapter 426 might as well be a monologue. Shouto is the only one who asked Touya a question and waited to get an answer. Enji never asks anyone if they are okay with him visiting Touya together with the rest of his family, neither does he ask Touya if he would be fine with his father coming to visit him every single day for the remaining rest of his life.

"From now on, I'm going to face my past and atone for everything I've done". He says this in chapter 192 but this quote might as well come from the chapter 426. He hasn't changed at all. His stubborn fight against his past mistakes prevents him from facing the actual victims of said mistakes - all he ever sees is himself.

The most curious development in chapter 426 however is Natsuo. Since the beginning, he was chosen as the speaking vessel of the family's conflict with Endeavour. He is the only one who voiced everything out loud to Enji's face, without skipping anything. He is the only one who challenged Enji, refused to accept his chosen way of atonement, didn't accept his "apology". Now, at the end of the family's story, he refused it for the final time. He cut off Enji and won't let him into his life anymore. Looking at this event from the point of the purpose given to Natsuo's character, this means Enji's utter failure. The one family member who didn't accept his efforts from the very start, who didn't forgive him already before he even thought about apologizing, the one who wasn't tied to him by his quirk and the eugenics purpose Enji had given him against his will. The only one who had the full independent freedom to accept or reject Enji's atonement, based only on his actions.

And he had refused him. Natsuo started the Hellish Torodoki Family arc struggling to accept Enji's atonement. And he ended the Hellish part of their family's life rejecting Enji for the final time. For Enji's character arc, namely, for his atonement, this means full and utter failure.

The finale of the hellish Todoroki family is artistically horrific and bittersweet and aches with all that could have been. Enji wanted a son that could surpass his flames; Toya wanted his father’s attention. They both got exactly what they wanted. And yet….if only some little thing were different, their ending would have been much happier. If only father and son weren’t so alike. If only they had realized sooner. If only they weren’t so committed to a spectacular flameout as their final act.

But no, it’s now Enji and Toya, stuck together for the rest of their lives in that room. A slow burn of their own making.

But things don't always go as planned, the villains stretched the heroes to thin

Endeavor had been assigned to fight AFO, leaving Shoto to deal with Touya

Touya and Enji finally got to have their dance

Touya begins to dream if only things never went that way....

....except Touya is forgetting Shoto does exist and he had a crying little boy in his heart as well wishing for the same

Unfortunately things were too late

But Shoto at least had a little time to get to know his brother.....

And through Shoto's words, Touya sheds his real first tears in a decade

Seriously though..... at least someone in his family didn't just say "lets talk" and actually talked..... I think that is a big problem with the Todoroki's, words only and no actions
