Penthouse apartment of Tod Williams and Billie Tsien (c.2017) taken by Wendy Goodman. I'm fascinated by this photograph. It's taken literally in the middle of Manhattan and it seems that everyone has left town except the subjects. No other lights on. It's eerie.

The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
Tumblr media
It’s hard to believe Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove was a box office disappointment. This is Disney doing Dreamworks before Dreamworks had an identity. No romance. No princesses. Only one musical number. It’s a fast-paced comedy, the kind whose jokes come and go so fast you miss half of them. It was a big risk that might not have paid off in dollars in the year 2000 but certainly does in entertainment value today.
Self-centered Incan emperor Kuzco (voiced by David Spade) has just finished informing Pacha (John Goodman) that his small village is going to be torn down to make room for a royal pool when he is betrayed by his advisor, Yzma (Eartha Kittening). Unfortunately, her dim-witted eye-candy flunky, Kronk (Patrick Warburton), mixed up the potions. Instead of poisoning Kuzco, he's transformed him into a llama. Forced to ask Pacha for help, Kuzco begins to change his selfish ways.
Right away, you know you’re not watching the typical Disney story when Kuzco breaks the fourth wall and introduces The Emperor’s New Groove as HIS story: the tale of a king who’s been abused and mistreated. It’s not the last time we’ll be told to abandon our expectations. There’s only one musical number (two if you count the reprise). It’s an anthem all about how wonderful and glorious Emperor Kuzco is, sung by Tom Jones. Still not convinced you’re in for something different? Just take a look at the character designs. The proportions are wildly exaggerated, even for an animated movie. Kronk’s torso must be five times as wide as his waist while Yzma’s skeletal-like figure would be impossible to achieve in real life. Anything to make them funnier. That’s the motto of the film. Historical anachronisms? Why not? Goofy-looking characte designs? You know it. Unexpected and impossible developments? Of course! The goal is to make you laugh. To do this, the running time must be packed tight with jokes. If Kuzco is going to be chased by jaguars while screaming his head off, then Mark Dindal chooses to first take a half-second to put in one little gag before the big one. Kind of a warm-up for the main event.
The animators have been given free rein to smash and twist Kuzco any way they want as they teach him a lesson in humility. It makes for a simple story - which is why the picture only lasts 78 minutes - and that’s exactly the way it should be. Just when you’d get tired of laughing, the credits roll. "Aww no! Really? Well, maybe I’ll just watch it again. I sure had a good time and I know I missed out on some of the jokes." You will, particularly with the way the film uses backgrounds to comment on elements in the foreground or glosses over stuff so we can keep things moving. Other comedies might pause and give the audience the chance to drink it all in. The Emperor's New Groove has somewhere else it wants you to be already.
The Emperor’s New Groove is an oddity in the Disney canon. This just makes it that much more enjoyable. It defies your expectations in multiple ways. From the humor, to the characters, the way the story is told, to the art style and its willingness to go anywhere as long as it’s funny, this is one memorable film. (On Blu-ray, September 11, 2020)

THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE 2000
Oh, right. The poison. The poison for Kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco, Kuzco's poison. That poison?

Who are the Goodmans?
"The Goodmans" is my first attempt at an all-human story! And it's set in the early 2000/2010s!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the events of the world wars, different countries banded together to add certain laws, the most notable being that:
War is illegal, and a world leader would be sentenced to death if they attempted to start one
There is a legal limit to how much money a person can have.-- Billionaires are legally obligated to donate their money or give back to the bottom, the world poverty rate is at an all-time low!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The setting is based around the characters Denise and Oscar Goodman :3 a wealthy dad and his daughter who live in a van and travel the world.
Wendy Swan, the tall blonde lady, is Denise's ballet teacher! She and Oscar seem to have tension.

people will be like what music are you listening to, and i have to be like
well i am always listening to wendy carlos's 1986 microtonal synth album 'beauty in he beast' and soaking it in, you know it bothers me somewhat that she's really only remember for her film soundtracks, but also i've also been stuck on insaneintherain's one man big band cover donkey kong country jungle hijinx that quotes 'sing sing sing' and if i'm not mistaken also references the yooka-laylee casino level, although that's possible because y-l was referencing benny goodman in the first place and--
wait where are you going

Kronk's New Groove (2005)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Kronk’s New Groove is the worst kind of sequel. Not only is it bad, it’s so dreadful it makes you wonder if you really even liked the first movie.
Now the chef and head delivery boy of Mudka’s Meat Hut, Kronk Pepikrankenitz (voiced by Patrick Warburton) should be happy. Instead, he’s worried. His disapproving father is coming to visit and all the loveable lug can think about are the times where he tried - and failed - to obtain the family and house on the hill pops dreamed he’d have.
Think of your favourite jokes from The Emperor’s New Groove. Guess what? It's back! They’re all back! Well, cheap clones of them, anyway. The shot where Yzma (Eartha Kitt) lifts up her dress and the characters recoil in horror because they think the old, ugly witch is trying to be sexy but actually, she’s showing them something else? You get it. How about Chaca (Jessie Flower) and Tipo (Eli Russell Linnetz) arguing? You get that too. The Emperor (David Spade) breaking the fourth wall and commenting on the action? Yup. Yzma’s secret lair beneath the surface? Talking with squirrels? The food that turns out to be disgusting bugs? Check, check, check. Too bad none of it is original or remotely amusing this time.
It goes without saying that this direct-to-video sequel has animation of a significantly lower quality than its predecessor. That’s forgiveable. What isn’t is the quality of the songs. Kronk’s New Groove barely qualifies as a musical but there are just enough tunes to make you regret you have ears. The most memorable number is when Earth, Wind and Fire’s Let’s Groove plays. ‘Cause it has “groove” in the name, get it?
One of the funniest elements of The Emperor’s New Groove was its historical anachronisms. Kronk’s New Groove has them too and they’re constant. It’s set in ancient Incan times but we have scout leaders with British accents, Jewish weddings, references to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, and so on and so forth. Seems to me as if the writers just threw whatever dusty gags they found in the bin together and called it a day.
Though it isn’t as blatantly obvious as it is in Atlantis: Milo’s Return and Tarzan 2, this all feels suspiciously like a bunch of TV episodes stitched together to make a movie. The first “plot” has Kronk swindling the village fossils out of their savings for a youth potion that doesn’t work after Yzma inexplicably returns. The second is the tale of two rival scout troupes battling it out for a trophy while romance blossoms between Kronk and Miss Birdwell (voiced by Tracey Ullman). After reminiscing these events, Kronk’s father arrives and our hero scrambles to come up with a “family” so pops won’t be disappointed. Are you tired of this movie yet?
Kronk’s New Groove proves a little of its titular character went a long way. You get sick of this movie within a quarter of an hour. Too bad. You’ve got another 57 agonizingly long minutes to go. I’m going to resist giving it the lowest possible score for reasons I can’t explain but it’s a tough inner battle. The audacity of a scene in which Kuzko yells at “the guy up in the projection booth” to restart the movie almost made me laugh. As if any theater would be desperate enough to show this on one of their screens. (February 26, 2021)

final destination characters and what movie/tv shows i think they would like
alex - the walking dead. has seen every single episode even though it’s been running for over a decade. says he could probably survive a zombie apocalypse. is the biggest glenn defender ever.
tod - community. 100%. when the movie got announced he went apeshit on twitter. he loves troy, has seen every episode at least twice, and actually liked the fourth season for some reason.
george - he doesn’t watch tv unless it’s like a sport. look at him. if he had to pick, brooklyn 99.
clear - shameless. she sat through all eleven seasons, would have watch parties with her friends, and liked to take notes on the psyche of the characters. she HATED frank with a passion and loved fiona. actually cried at both finales.
billy - my babysitters a vampire. claims it was his “childhood” and is still upset they ended it on a cliffhanger. rory def rubbed off on him growing up. he prefers the first season to the second but has seen each episode like a million times. will sing the theme song totally unprompted
carter - breaking bad. actually tried making meth cause he thought walter had the “right idea” with the money. is the kind of guy to retweet sigma male edits of the characters
terry - locke and key. watched it cause she thought the main villain was hot, and when he was a girl too she went crazy on twitter. live tweeted the second season, and will defend kinsey locke to no extent.
kimberly - first kill. clear or shania told her to watch it saying it was like a better version of twilight. (she loves twilight). she was on the front lines trying to keep the show from getting canceled. she has probably made an edit of caliette. she’s crazy like that.
rory - he also likes breaking bad, but he’s more into better call saul. saul goodman is HIM. literally so relatable and babygirl. he saw better call saul first, so when he showed up in s2 of brba he went APESHIT
eugene - abbott elementary because there is “finally” a REAL show about what it’s like to be a teacher. he also never gets into sitcoms so it was a shock for him that he liked it so much
nora - bones. she LOVES crime dramas on daytime television, and bones is no exception. she finds herself trying to figure out the twist every single episode. she also gets way too into the characters. (tim was explaining to her that bones was autistic coded and she went :o)
tim - kid LOOKS like henry danger, but i’m gonna say malcom in the middle. secretly wished for a big family growing up. alex told him that the father makes meth and since tim didn’t know about brba he was actively seeking out that plot line.
evan - literally anything with wrestling.
kat - the office. not in like, a “basic” way or anything but because she is a businesswoman and needs to feel included. she likes pam a lot. wanted dwight to die once. she got through about eight seasons before calling it quits.
wendy - i feel like she’s a house md fan??? idk why or how but it just makes sense to me i suppose. probably an rsl fan or something
kevin - okay unpopular opinion but i feel like he’s a huge fan of the will forte era on snl. he’s a will forte fan in general so he’s probably seen clone high, last man on earth and macgruber
ian - def a santa clarita diet fan. trust me when i say this man was having meltdowns on twitter when it got canceled. you have never seen him more passionate in his life!
erin - okay this is very unpopular and very out of character but she has a guilty pleasure show and that is dawsons creek. joey is her fave and she is Completely Normal about pacey + joey. her regular show is yellowjackets, however. god bless cannibalistic high schoolers
