When I read this book for the first time back in 2016 I had already spend over two years obsessing over Julian and Emma, and I must admit I did not give a shit about anyone else until I read Lord of shadows BUT NOW THAT IM OLDER AND WISER CRISTINA AND MARK IN THIS SCENE MADE ME GIGGLE LIKE A TEENAGER. "You would be lovely in the Court” Mark Blackthorn get a grip.

THE CAR/IRATZE/JULIAN DYING SCENE. i’ve spent years obsessing over this scene. it has played in replay in my mind so many times that by the time I reread it I was sure it had been a fever dream of mine. but no, here’s Julian Simp Blackthorn being the horniest for Emma while also fucking dying???:!2&2!/! He’s so in love I might actually die.

julian and his siblings relationship has always been something that made my heart physically ache. So Julian falling with Tavvy on the stairs and hitting himself to protect Tavvy but also immediately checking if HIS baby is okay. you can not fucking tell me he should not be loved for eternity by fucking everyone

the fact that Julian can’t be physically close to emma without mentally collapsing. i mean, the man was dancing with her and he was floating. the intimacy, the CONNECTION, THE TOUCHING *chef’s kiss*

okay let’s get to this *cracks knuckles*

i think clary and simon being parabatai kinda ruined for me. one thing i appreciated is that their friendship hadn’t need a magical rune binding them forever to be the kind of codependent best friends they are. their friendship was the core of tmi and it was so beautiful the sacrifices and how far they would go for each other that for me it was like a proof that you do not need to be parabatai to reach that level of love and connection with each other. them not needing a parabatai bond was the point, so when they became parabatais i was like meh. and their friendship lost their uniqueness.

thule. i hate everything related to it! it’s one of the reasons i still hate qoaad so much. it feels so unnecessary and forced. i know other dimensions concept has been introduced since tmi and it fits the whole fantasy stuff so i never minded that but parallel world? now you’re just pushing it. and the whole dystopian world we are shown in thule is so unserious to me. janus plot feels stupid as fuck and also this is one of the reasons i can’t care for ash like seriously the whole thing is just so dumb.

i never liked wessa individually sorry. only scenarios i can like wessa is in herongraystairs. which is not the case with jessa and heronstairs because i love both relationships individually and together as poly. but yeah wessa has never been my cup of tea

but this is not new actually. i’m not a fan of cc’s main couples ever. i have always preferred the side couples (but not always) or queer fanon ones, they always feel more natural whereas with the main couples i can’t help but feel like cc is trying too hard to tell the audience how perfect for each other they are instead of letting us see it for ourselves. i think kitty is the only main couple i’m actually seriously invested and i think it’s because they started as a side couple first.

i know everyone loves novellas about their favorite characters but i wish we had novellas from characters that aren’t already main/secondary characters in the sagas. like i wish we could get a novella about jonathan shadowhunter or just characters that are mentioned but not already shown.

people will call me bias but grace is truly by far one of the best characters in tsc (i would even dare to say her best female character at all) and i think a big part is because she wasn’t tied to a romance

which leads me to this point. i don’t think romance necessarily strips characters of their own individuals arcs (because there’s big exceptions: magnus. jem. jessamine. simon. to name a few) but a lot of the time, especially with main couples, the characters do end up feeling very reduced to romance only and it’s quite annoying.

i really wish julian had became a villain sorry that was such a wasted opportunity.

tessa and her powers feel so underutilized when she’s canonically one of the most powerful characters in the verse.

the parabatai to lovers trope should’ve been given to a mlm or wlw ship. listen the implications it would’ve had!! the metaphors and allegories for homophobia through the whole forbidden love punished by law. how you’re allowed to be the closest and have the deepest bond but also aren’t allowed to be romantic because it would be viewed gross (that talk between emma and sarah) and a perversion of the parabatai bond. THE POTENTIAL WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF CC!!!! i hope one day she tries or makes a novella about queer parabatais because it’s such an opportunity icb she fumbled it. idm if they die either because it would make it more tragic and i love that

i don’t want magnus or tessa to lose their immortality. personally i love the tragedy immortal x mortal romance brings and i think immortality in general is such a sad but at the same time beautiful concept, it brings the questions “is it worthy to love if it brings you pain later?” and for me the answer will always be yes. so i ate it up.

for the sake of my sanity i need that theory of dead shadowhunters coming back to life in twp to be FALSE. i’m sorry i can’t do it it sounds too much like a wattpad fix it fic. i don’t want it!

If you were asked to guess which prestigious film-making duo had spent their career scratching around desperately for cash, trying to wriggle out of paying their cast and crew, ping-ponging between lovers, and having such blood-curdling bust-ups that their neighbours called the police, it might be some time before “Merchant Ivory” sprang to mind. But a new warts-and-all documentary about the Indian producer Ismail Merchant and the US director James Ivory makes it clear that the simmering passions in their films, such as the EM Forster trilogy of A Room With a View, Maurice and Howards End, were nothing compared to the scalding, volatile ones behind the camera.

From their initial meeting in New York in 1961 to Merchant’s death during surgery in 2005, the pair were as inseparable as their brand name, with its absence of any hyphen or ampersand, might suggest. Their output was always more eclectic than they got credit for. They began with a clutch of insightful Indian-set dramas including Shakespeare-Wallah, their 1965 study of a troupe of travelling actors, featuring a young, pixieish Felicity Kendal. From there, they moved on to Savages, a satire on civilisation and primitivism, and The Wild Party, a skewering of 1920s Hollywood excess that pipped Damien Chazelle’s Babylon to the post by nearly half a century.

It was in the 1980s and early 1990s, though, that Merchant Ivory became box-office titans, cornering the market in plush dramas about repressed Brits in period dress. Those literary adaptations launched the careers of Hugh Grant, Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves and Julian Sands, and helped make stars of Emma Thompson and Daniel Day-Lewis. Most were scripted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who had been with them, on and off, since their 1963 debut The Householder; she even lived in the same apartment building in midtown New York. Many were scored by Richard Robbins, who was romantically involved with Merchant while also holding a candle for Bonham Carter. These films restored the costume drama to the position it had occupied during David Lean’s heyday. The roaring trade in Jane Austen adaptations might never have happened without them. You could even blame Merchant Ivory for Bridgerton.

Though the pictures were uniformly pretty, making them was often ugly. Money was always scarce. Asked where he would find the cash for the next movie, Merchant replied: “Wherever it is now.” After Jenny Beavan and John Bright won an Academy Award for the costumes in A Room With a View, he said:“I got you your Oscar. Why do I need to pay you?” As Ivory was painstakingly composing each shot, Merchant’s familiar, booming battle cry would ring out: “Shoot, Jim, shoot!”

Heat and Dust, starring Julie Christie, was especially fraught. Only 30 or 40% of the budget was in place by the time the cameras started rolling in India in 1982; Merchant would rise at dawn to steal the telegrams from the actors’ hotels so they didn’t know their agents were urging them to down tools. Interviewees in the documentary concede that the producer was a “conman” with a “bazaar mentality”. But he was also an incorrigible charmer who dispensed flattery by the bucketload, threw lavish picnics, and wangled entrées to magnificent temples and palaces. “You never went to bed without dreaming of ways to kill him,” says one friend, the journalist Anna Kythreotis. “But you couldn’t not love him.”

Stephen Soucy, who directed the documentary, doesn’t soft-pedal how wretched those sets could be. “Every film was a struggle,” he tells me. “People were not having a good time. Thompson had a huge fight with Ismail on Howards End because she’d been working for 13 days in a row, and he tried to cancel her weekend off. Gwyneth Paltrow hated every minute of making Jefferson in Paris. Hated it! Laura Linney was miserable on The City of Your Final Destination because the whole thing was a shitshow. But you watch the films and you see no sense of that.”

Soucy’s movie features archive TV clips of the duo bickering even in the midst of promoting a film. “Oh, they were authentic all right,” he says. “They clashed a lot.”The authenticity extended to their sexuality. The subject was not discussed publicly until after Ivory won an Oscar for writing Call Me By Your Name: “You have to remember that Ismail was an Indian citizen living in Bombay, with a deeply conservative Muslim family,” Ivory told me in 2018. But the pair were open to those who knew them. “I never had a sense of guilt,” Ivory says, pointing out that the crew on The Householder referred to him and Merchant as “Jack and Jill”.

Soucy had already begun filming his documentary when Ivory published a frank, fragmentary memoir, Solid Ivory, which dwells in phallocentric detail on his lovers before and during his relationship with Merchant, including the novelist Bruce Chatwin. It was that book which emboldened Soucy to ask questions on screen – including about “the crazy, complicated triangle of Jim, Ismail and Dick [Robbins]” – that he might not otherwise have broached.

The documentary is most valuable, though, in making a case for Ivory as an underrated advocate for gay representation. The Remains of the Day, adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker-winning novel about a repressed butler, may be the duo’s masterpiece, but it was their gay love story Maurice that was their riskiest undertaking. Set in the early 20th century, its release in 1987 could scarcely have been timelier: it was the height of the Aids crisis, and only a few months before the Conservative government’s homophobic Section 28 became law.

“Ismail wasn’t as driven as Jim to make Maurice,” explains Soucy. “And Ruth was too busy to write it. But Jim’s dogged determination won the day. They’d had this global blockbuster with A Room With a View, and he knew it could be now or never. People would pull aside Paul Bradley, the associate producer, and say: ‘Why are they doing Maurice when they could be making anything?’ I give Jim so much credit for having the vision and tenacity to make sure the film got made.”

Merchant Ivory don’t usually figure in surveys of queer cinema, though they are part of its ecosystem, and not only because of Maurice. Ron Peck, who made the gay classic Nighthawks, was a crew member on The Bostonians. Andrew Haigh, director of All of Us Strangers, landed his first industry job as a poorly paid assistant in Merchant’s Soho office in the late 1990s; in Haigh’s 2011 breakthrough film Weekend, one character admits to freeze-framing the naked swimming scene in A Room With a View to enjoy “Rupert Graves’s juddering cock”. Merchant even offered a role in Savages to Holly Woodlawn, the transgender star of Andy Warhol’s Trash, only for her to decline because the fee was so low.

The position of Merchant Ivory at the pinnacle of British cinema couldn’t last for ever. Following the success of The Remains of the Day, which was nominated for eight Oscars, the brand faltered and fizzled. Their films had already been dismissed by the director Alan Parker as representing “the Laura Ashley school” of cinema. Gary Sinyor spoofed their oeuvre in the splendid pastiche Stiff Upper Lips (originally titled Period!), while Eric Idle was plotting his own send-up called The Remains of the Piano. The culture had moved on.

There was still an appetite for upper-middle-class British repression, but only if it was funny: Richard Curtis drew on some of Merchant Ivory’s repertory company of actors (Grant, Thompson, Simon Callow) for a run of hits beginning with Four Weddings and a Funeral, which took the poshos out of period dress and plonked them into romcoms.

The team itself was splintering. Merchant had begun directing his own projects. When he and Ivory did collaborate, the results were often unwieldy, lacking the stabilising literary foundation of their best work. “Films like Jefferson in Paris and Surviving Picasso didn’t come from these character-driven novels like Forster, James or Ishiguro,” notes Soucy. “Jefferson and Picasso were not figures that audiences warmed to.” Four years after Merchant’s death, Ivory’s solo project The City of Your Final Destination became mired in lawsuits, including one from Anthony Hopkins for unpaid earnings.

Soucy’s film, though, is a reminder of their glory days. It may also stoke interest in the movies among young queer audiences whose only connection to Ivory, now 95, is through Call Me By Your Name. “People walk up to Jim in the street to shake his hand and thank him for Maurice,” says Soucy. “But I also wanted to include the more dysfunctional side of how they were made. Hopefully it will be inspiring to young film-makers to see that great work can come out of chaos.”

okay i wanna try list all fandoms i’ve been a part of or had an interest in there are SO MANY!!! and i still love them all!! (っ＾▿＾)

okay okay let me go from the past to the present soooo we have:

Books 🏹:

raven cycle: i read these very very long ago and i couldn’t be able to specify what happens exactly but i’ve never forgotten how i loved the characterisation in these books!! truth be told though, my main interest was pynch - i love ronan and adam so bad and i need a fic of them that will change my life i never really found one sighh. i also really want to know what happened in ronan’s book, no matter where i look i can never find a comprehensive detailed spoiled review of the plot and i NEED TO KNOW. ARE PYNCH OKAY?!?

acotar: now probably every YA novel lover went through this phase - reading the chapter in acomaf where rhysand confesses to feyre and then they smash changed my little life. admittedly, my fixation on these books didn’t get very deep and i never went on to read nesta’s book because, from what i’ve seen other people say, i think i wouldn’t have liked it. the men in those books are…. um not so great! still, i have some interest in this fandom because - just from what i’ve read on tumblr!! - i want to see gwyn and azriel happen they seem like such an interesting couple to me

mortal instruments: now. Now. now. this series holds a special place in my heart. i have always loved these books, they have interested me in every part of my life i just love the entire mortal instruments universe and the plotlines are always so interesting i adore it. i haven’t read every series; only the main six books with clary and jace and malec (which, whilst i still love, was my least favourite), the last midnight series (julian and emma are seriously underrated their relationship being forbidden friends to lovers is like crack cocaine to me, and i’m excited to see what comes of ty and kit), and then the infernal devices… the INFERNAL DEVICES GODHDGSGJSJ

the infernal devices were the first books i ever cried to and even now when i think about it i start to tear up. and it’s not even all sad tears, i just hold these characters and their relationship so dearly to my heart that it achesss. jem and will and tessa are incredibly beautiful i’ve never read love like theirs and individually as people i want the very best for them so badly that the thought of them ever feeling sad Breaks. Me. like literally thinking about the fact will isn’t alive right now makes me want to throw up i can’t even process it. i love these books and i require deep therapy to deal with the emotions it left me with.

six of crows: this kinda includes the entire grishaverse, but with shadow&bone i didn’t completely read the books i was more into the tv show. oh and also i read one of the best fan fiction i have ever read in my existence it still sticks with me i think of it randomly from time to time it was darklina rewriting of the ending and it was literally amazing. anyways, okay six of crows yeah amazing amazing amazing. kaz and inej love of my lives - kaz is one of the most interesting characters i have ever read. i think the heist was really interesting too, which is rare for me because i’m always much more focused on the characters rather than the plot so that’s one of the reasons this series is on top for me. writing about it is making me want to re-readddd. with the tv show - i was really into the cast and first season, but i think the show wasn’t so great in terms of bringing the books to life. but i still liked it! and i’m sad it was cancelled i wish they had given it time to flesh out :(

harry potter: my first love 🧡 my childhood was harry potter obsessed, i have every piece of merchandise you can possibly imagine. a gryffindor scarf (even though im hufflepuff and proud🏳️‍🌈), pyjamas, harry potter cutlery, a golden snitch nightlight, a marauders map - everything. i love love loveee the universe of harry potter and that love has never and will never leave me. this should probably be talked about in the movie section, since i was more invested in them, but i generally just have a love for the world and the characters. ron weasley has my heart that beautiful, lovely golden retriever loser boyfriend, harry i would protect with my life, and hermoine the icon the legend we should all acknowledge that everything would have crumbled without her she’s amazing. actually over the past few days i’ve been reading drarry fics which…. these are so good y’all the dynamic why am i only just realising this. well, i know why, and it’s because of the next hyperfixation that RUINED ME-

marauders: now, my love for harry potter started when i was child but it’s been revived in the past months because of one fanfic that destroyed my life and any chance of me ever being a normal functioning part of society - and that fic is crimson rivers. i’m sure anyone who’s read it UNDERSTANDS MY AGONY. i came across it literally out of nowhere, i had never read a hp fic before even when i was into the universe when i was younger. but i randomly decided to search the hp fics with the most hits on ao3 one day and crimson rivers was top three. the description stood out me because hello hunger games is one of the most interesting plots ever created, and normally i would be deterred by the length of the fic or i would end up skipping chapters but for some reason - as if the universe was aligning my ruination - my brain committed to reading it thoroughly and now no other fanfiction will ever compare. i am so disgustingly irrevocably attached to jegulus and wolfstar i think of nothing else all day. jegulus just works SO WELL they are basically all my favourite tropes rolled into the two characters who are so easy to from undying love attachments to. and wolfstar like that’s holy grail we already know. this is my current obsession and i want to talk about it and talk about it and talk about itttttt i am CONSUMED IT HAS RUINED ME

TV Shows 🐚:

game of thrones: i was HEAVY into game of thrones i really loved that show and was so excited to see where the plot would go… imagine my disappointment lmao. i do still love to rewatch up until season five but the seasons following that are and empty mess and every character is ruined and IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO GOODDD that’s a let down i can’t move on from. but still, i love the show and the characters and i wish grrm would write his ending because the books are infinitely more interesting and i need that ending. even though i haven’t read the last book yet, i have been watching many video analysis on youtube lately and now love jon’s book character so much.

others: i was mostly into book fandoms, so for tv shows i wont go into much detail. the ones i remember being fixated on are; skam, glee, vampire diaries, money heist, gossip girl, pretty little liars, and umm… there are others i feel like this actually isn’t a very representative list of what i liked but oh well! on to the next!

Music 🎸:

BTS: my loves, my everything!! one major part of me is my love for my seven. i’ve been army since 2022 and these boys are literally the best people in the universe. i love their music, i adore their personalities, i love the relationships between them; i’ve really never felt love or care for anything the way i feel for them. i’m jimin biased in the most unhinged crazy way you can imagine - that boy is my world. so yeah part of the cassie lore is that she is insane over bts and don’t get me started on them because i’ll never stop. i also - alongside harry potter fics - read mainly bts fics. i read mostly jinkook/taejin/yoonmin/jikook/ot7 and have once again had my life ruined by many of these fics.

hamilton: i’m not kidding at all when i say i can sing this entire musical word for word from memory. i LOVEEEE the soundtrack of hamilton it’s hit after hitttt, i love the original cast i’ve never moved past how much i love it. these days my link to watch the full musical hasn’t been working so im suffering bad but it’s okay since i have the amazing abilities to recreate it myself. honestly non-stop is the funnest song to ever sing.

harry styles: i was big into harry back in 2020/21 when he released fine line. my interest kinda faded out but i still love his music so much - harry’s house was amazing.

others: my taste is music is literally so wide range that i listen to everyone but the artists i keep up with are; kiss of life, red velvet, aespa, le sserafim, sabrina carpenter, olivia rodrigo, billie eilish, frank ocean, hozier, kali uchis, chappell roan, sza, ariana, and many moreeee!!

okay!! that’s all i can remember for now, i wrote this mostly for fun to see for myself all the things i’ve found happiness in. being a fangirl is the best thing in the world i was made for it <33 i might add more if i can remember it but for now yeahhh this is my brain 🩷
