Love that Oppenheimer is a deeply disturbing horror movie about a man forced to accept that he is, in a person, the representative manifestation of mankind’s evil in committing one of the greatest horrors of human history - LITERALLY acting as the modern Prometheus, tormented by his sins for the remainder of time. Knowing that he will never be pitied and his actions will forever be utterly unforgivable because the blood of genocide and the potential of total human annihilation will eternally drip from his hands.
But also the simultaneous indictment by the film that to blame a single person for the Manhattan Project is to refuse to accept your own capacity for great evil if the ends ever seem to justify the means, and the culpability of every member of a species that lets itself create something so unspeakably terrible.
Hate that twitter’s take on such a nuanced and brilliantly handled examination of those issues is “movie bad because protagonist not evil enough.”
#what’s that quote about the problem with othering the enemy in media is that we can no longer see our own reflection in their eyes#oppenheimer’s motivations WERE sympathetic that’s the POINT#we SHOULD feel uncomfortable with our sympathy for him - the film goes out of its way to make us feel uncomfortable about it#we should be uncomfortable with the fact that we might have made the same decisions as him in his place#yes he’s evil but his evilness represents the evil that we might all accept in ourselves#twitter simply cannot handle nuanced takes on things ig (tumblr does though - the posts on here have been surprisingly excellent)#oppenheimer#(tldr - look if you walk out of Oppenheimer thinking it somehow celebrates the man then you may need to retake 9th grade Literature srry)#films

I think as a part of healing that Jean should not just get to watch all the silly reality show dramas with Jeremy (Jean hates real housewives but sort of tolerates dance moms), but also stuff on his own! Getting to figure out what kind of movies/tv he likes, because lord knows the Ravens did not have a tv, much less one that Jean would even have access to outside of game film.
Anyways, I'm team let Jean watch French shows like Le Sommet des dieux or Lupin or something. Nobody else has any idea what is happening, but they're all happy Jean is choosing to watch something for himself.
Also, I think it would be nice for him to hear people speaking french that aren't kevin or neil. Maybe Elodie liked movies.
#he has seen beauty and the beast but its the 1946 b&w film done entirely in french#I saw a post about jean and the paris olympics and him not sounding like hes french and i had to alleviate that somehow for my own sanity#aftg#the sunshine court#jean moreau#jeremy knox#all for the game#i looked up on reddit popular french tv and picked the ones i liked best ok#lupin i know is fairly popular and has been for a while#Le Sommet des dieux is actually a sports movie that i've heard is excellent

Semyon Mezhinsky as Napoleon Bonaparte in the Soviet film, Kutuzov, dir. Vladimir Petrov, 1944
It looks like the filmmakers either used face prosthetics or some sort of editing to make the actor look more like Napoleon. His nose, for example, was changed to look a lot more like Napoleon’s nose. I think it turned out really well and looks very accurate.
#I think Russian films do the best at casting Napoleon#Soviet films were very excellent#ngl it kind of looks like someone time travelled to take this pic#I’m impressed#Napoleon#napoleon bonaparte#film#vintage film#Soviet Union#Soviet film#napoleonic era#napoleonic#19th century#first french empire#french empire#Russia#Russian#Russian film#vintage#vintage films#movie#cinema#vintage cinema#Soviet films#history#movies#stills#movie stills#france#French

Watching Friday the 13th for the first time and I’m really loving how the use of POV shots in the first act of the movie sets up a lot more suspenseful shots later in the film by making the audience question whether the shot on screen is or isnt POV at the moment
#this is usually when its handheld dollying toward a character from a halfshot to a close up and ESPECIALLY when the character is not facing#the camera#fucking excellent directorial and cinematographical work#i can see why this one is such a classic#also love the score#the little ‘tchtch kh-khh’ sound that repeats a lot when it gets scary/after a murder#reminds me of a lot of things but particularly of clicking and scraping metal (like a knife)#but also like crickets#cause yknow#summercamp#this is really such a good movie#and im such a sucker for the old film look

The Aftermath (1982)
"What happens when you die?"
"I don't know, son. No one does."
"It's sad to die."
"No. Death isn't sad. We all have to die. What's sad is having to go on without someone you love. Just as we have to go on now."
#the aftermath#1982#video nasty#horror imagery#steve barkett#stanley livingston#post apocalyptic film#horror film#american cinema#lynne margulies#sid haig#christopher barkett#alfie martin#forrest j. ackerman#jim danforth#linda stiegler#laura anne barkett#larry latham#carole scott#nelson ackerman#john w. morgan#incredibly dumb passion project from writer‚ director and star Barkett; he spent years getting this made‚ burning through investors and#deals whilst trying to maintain the integrity of his vision (his silly‚ silly vision). to be clear‚ this is a lot of fun to watch but not#all of that fun is intentional; the back third of this movie contains a shootout so absurdly long‚ so gratuitously violent (and with a#preposterous location change from the desert to some ruined city skyscraper tops) that it beggars belief. likewise Barkett's self insertion#as the Ultimate Action Man Hero who by the end of the film comes to resemble more of a post apocalyptic christlike figure of spiritual#salvation. it's a dumb film is what I'm saying‚ but Sid Haig is there and it all looks unreasonably good and the matte paintings are weirdl#excellent (and the fx are solid too‚ model spaceships aside). ridiculous stuff but made with clear love and self belief#in such a way that it can only end up being endearing. a pleasant surprise in my deep dive into the more obscure nasties#it's been a rough ride recently but a few more brain numbing entries like this and I'll be back on board

The biggest offender of the ROP show : it doesn't do any justice to Ar-Pharazon/Sauron. And Ar-Pharazon isn't DILF enough
Anon, you are so right. Well, I don't think it's the biggest offense, but it is a major offense! It didn't help that imo Halbrand is a black hole of charisma, store-brand Viggo. I don't think they even interacted :(
I quite liked Pharazon's look but not for him; it would have worked well for an OC advisor or maybe Amandil. But Pharazon himself should be smoking hot and look much younger: prime of life, not entering old age. I'd love him to resemble Elrond (and thus Luthien).
#speaking of dilfs i'm once more bothered that elendil told galadriel that she reminded him of one of his children#(his children who are very much early adulthood - earien trying to get into her preferred university)#(and isildur who's waffling on what major to choose)#elendil as a dilf is excellent#galadriel framed as younger and more immature than him is so very much not#(esp since he towers over her physically)#i did like what they were going for with the numenorean look; love those classical mediterranean vibes#but i don't think they pulled it off entirely and a lot of the clothes looked cheap (miriel's fabric armor)#one thing with a small budget and limited filming time#less forgivable in a production that spent more money per minute of film than the lotr movies did

Completely irrelevant, but I finally know who Pedro was supposed to play in As Bestas. He was originally cast for Diego Anido’s role.
#then he left before production for some reason??#likely because of that YA MOVIE OF ALL THINGS ASDFADF#but now that I've seen As Bestas (excellent film btw!)#not sure if the role suited him#then again there was that line from luis zahera: 'look at my brother! isn't he charming?'#I thought he was being sarcastic asdfasdf
