I have two in mind, but I will be talking about the other one later, and I want to talk about a finished one. I’m incredibly proud of us, @qs63 and myself, for “My own worst friend and my own closest enemy” (does it surprise anyone that I am the one who chose the title? BTW fun fact, it comes from the same song as my username). I’m proud of us for  writing a four hands fic relatively seamlessly, and managing to get to the end of it in a relatively short time. It was a blast from start to finish, and I’m also glad it seems to still get love a year after we finished publishing. Bonus, it’s still very fun to re-read for me because I only wrote 50% of it so I don’t remember everything and I get surprised every time haha. We managed to make a fic that also delves into character study for both BH and 03 Roy and Riza, and that was INCREDIBLY FUN. Best time.

We don’t talk about failures Murdocks Never Quit in this house so let’s talk about one I’m actually proud of (at least I did learn from my mistakes). Besides, it seems to have gotten that much insane love without me even knowing or being told it so uh. Nevermind. That just couldn't work, could it.

Of course since it’s a very long fic with multiple chapters the one which has received the most love is All the hope (not that people read more long fics but statistically more people are exposed to it thanks to the new chapters updates), which I am very proud and insanely happy about, because at first I wasn’t even planning to publish it. And now I’m gladly on the way to finish this monster of a fic and already planning the second part. Go figure XD but I am so so grateful for everyone who has given a chance to it and for those who keep on reading. Extra bonus for you who leave all these detailed comments at each chapters, all of you, you have no idea how you’ve kept me afloat all year. And kept/keep me writing. All the love for you. Thank you so much.

I’m already thinking of what I could do once I’m done publishing All the hope, and I have some WIPs lying around. The most developed one has already been partially written, and I’m considering trying to start posting it with a long delay between chapters, to allow me to work on multiple things at once. Not sure it’s a good idea, though. This one, some of my followers might know about, has for working name “1923”, and explores the lives of the Roy and Riza of OUR universe that we don’t get to see in Conqueror of Shamballa. I couldn’t NOT have fun with sending Roy into WW1, I mean, ME. SENDING CHARACTERS INTO WW1? HOW SURPRISING. I even managed to find a historically accurate way to send Riza to war without making a nurse out of her (which. No. No nurse Riza for me, unless you count her nursing Roy back to health)(of course, who do you think I am, you know what I write). There’s of course all the other characters that pop up here and there. And yes of course this is 100% Royai lol (UPDATE : I don't know what possessed me. It's a Royai fic alright. However. There are surprises in it. If I don't mention that I know someone will come and kill me with her bare hands. Lol. Royai with a twist I guess?)

I had this Daredevil pin I got a couple years ago off etsy. My FAVORITE pin ever, it was spectacular. Wore it on my backpack, purse, etc. Gd I loved it, and no picture did justice to the shine of it or how cool it looked in person. It even came with a sticker version that I put on my pc - LOOK AT THIS FUCKER.

Unfortunately, I'm mildly cursed.

At some point, it fell off my bag, and it was lost. Maybe while moving, maybe in the chaos a few days before, maybe someone stole it. I'm not sure. Either way, it was gone, kaput, poof. And it was out of stock on Etsy so I figured it was done. Rest in piece my beloved.

Well, @wonderlandmind4 encouraged me a few weeks ago to message the pinmaker (who has some other amazing DD and fandom pins btw!), explain what happened, and just see if they were ever planning to put up more of the pin I lost. AND NOT ONLY WERE THEY HAPPY TO HEAR I LOVED IT, BUT THEY WERE MAKING MORE FOR APRIL.

I'm hesitating now, the original plan was to keep those like that and just give a blank as well so people could fill theirs in, but actually it might be better for the example to be popular ship names? The hard ones are last name/last name, and anything with nicknames honestly. There's a lot of things with first names and a fair amount of last names in the mix, but characters don't have nicknames super often, so it's a bit of a struggle. This is mostly ship names I could think of off the top of my head lol, you can tell cause those are mostly things I have at least a passing interest in :')))

Ahhh, thank you so much!! 💖I'm glad you enjoy FFTD!! That series also tends to be my favorite of everything I've written, too. There's just something about FFTD Matty...

I could certainly give you some tips/suggestions that I've learned along the way! I've been writing and reading fanfic since 2005 so I've been around for a bit 😅 Though if there is something more specific that I didn't address--like something more specific with writing or editing or something--you (or anyone else who's curious) can certainly always send me an ask and I will always answer when I have a few minutes! But I'm not going to claim I'm remotely an expert on all of this, either. This is just from my experience and talking with other fic writers.

As always, the answer is below the cut!

First, I think it's always important to keep in mind that the more you write, the better your skill will grow with writing. Which goes for everyone, no matter how long you've been writing for or whatever your age is. I always see an improvement in my writing when I read something from even just a few months ago. And I even cringe at things like the very first Matt fic I wrote or even some early FFTD installments. So don't be too hard on yourself!

I think it's also important to remember to not compare yourself to others. We all have different styles and voices and that's a wonderful thing in writing. If everyone wrote the same or had the same ideas, there'd be nothing interesting to read. Everything would sound the same which would be boring. Personally, I didn't find my writing style/voice and grow comfortable with it until almost a year and a half ago when I started writing for the Daredevil fandom, so it's completely okay if you are still searching for yours.

Don't let any negative comments you might ever receive writing fanfic drag you down. Everyone gets them, and some fandoms have different dynamics than others where it may happen more often than in another one (though come on y'all, can we please practice the don't like don't read rule??). I think anyone who writes fanfic long enough will receive at least some hate. I've certainly gotten plenty over the years, and yes, it sucks and it can hurt or piss you off, but you have to remember to brush it off. There are likely many others enjoying your story to make up for that one person who's being rude. Block buttons can be your friend if you need them.

If you're having trouble writing a character that already exists in the fandom, studying them in the source material is always a good route. The amount of times I've gone and re-watched Daredevil, Punisher, or Kin in order to feel like I capture any of the characters in there just right is absurd, but it really does help to see their mannerisms, speech patterns, and to begin to get a feel of how they'd react in different situations based on how they've reacted in the show.

Lastly, when you write chapters for your fics and it begins to feel daunting, know that you can always break things down into more manageable chunks. I used to struggle to write much at a time until I learned to focus on the story in this way as opposed to focusing on everything that I still needed to make happen. Just focus scene by scene or even line by line. How to get Character A to do this or get to that point, for example, and it should hopefully seem significantly less terrifying. If you try to think of everything that needs to happen in a chapter all at once, it might begin to feel overwhelming and you may have the urge to give up. Try breaking things down and focusing on one thing at a time.

I could absolutely go on but I don't want to ramble! If there's something more specific you're curious about that I didn't touch on, or maybe you'd like more detail about, absolutely feel free to send me another ask! And this goes for anyone who made it through all of this! I always love chatting, sometimes it just takes me a moment to have time to sit down and answer. I’d love to request a documentary about the bodyguard! Any little YouTube-blurb sized snippet, I’ll be thrilled with (but if we’re being honest, I want the full “comes in a dvd box with three discs of editors notes and stories from the cast” size documentary. Like republish the whole movie, make it LOTR extended edition length. I want a 9hr movie marathon about every sentence of every chapter 😅 the bodyguard is a whole book and I’d read a whole second book about your experience writing the first book)

okay so I did try to give you the LOTR extended edition, but apparently there's a word limit on these which is rude, so i'll give you as much as i'm allowed <3

I do have a confession to make. during the first half of the bodyguard, I was straight up winging it. obviously I never expected the request to turn into a full blown series, & I was shocked & elated at how much people wanted a part 2, & then a part 3, & so on. I think around part 3 or 4 was when I was like holy shit this is gonna be a full blown series. but I didn’t have like an actual plan for it. I had ideas, but I didn’t have an outline or anything, so from the request to about…maybe chapter 13, I was just writing each part as it came. like i’d write a part, edit it to death, second guess myself, rewrite it, edit it to death again, post it thinking god this is awful, & be blown away by the response (btw this happens with every single thing I post, seriously). around chapter 15 is where I actually sat down & was like okay where is this going? because technically I could’ve ended it at the halfway point, but it didn’t feel right to me. I knew I wanted to have a huge reveal for her finding out who he was (imagine writing about a feared vigilante & he ends up being your bodyguard & you end up talking about said vigilante while your bodyguard was standing right next to you, that was diabolical of me)

I really liked the idea of two villains but not having them connected at all bc I felt like that was predictable. I LOVE twists in books, especially if I can’t see them coming, but I love them even more when there’s easter eggs planted along the way so that when the twist is revealed, if you go back, you’re like fuck it was right in front of my face. I tried to do that with steven & the defenders of freedom (I hope I did) & obviously with billy, everyone in the fandom knows that twist, & I know some people expected me to make him a good guy in this story, but that man is a backstabbing little bitch & I couldn’t give him redemption, so I made him worse.

when I tell y’all I talk to myself & act things out that I imagine in my head, i'm not kidding, & I highly recommend it to writers. am I insane for having a whole ass conversation with myself? probably. but it works. like okay what would frank say, & how would he say it? how would frank stand, what would he do with his hands, his facial expressions? I do a lot of research when I write (I will spend an hour researching something just to write one line about it) & I rewatched a lot of clips from the punisher & from season 2 of daredevil, keeping track of how frank talks, his dialect & how he pronounces words, his body language & how that gives away his emotions, his mannerisms, etc. obviously i’m not the creator of him & I didn't want to make him a carbon copy, bc there are so many different versions of him, but jon’s is my favorite & I wanted it to be authentic

because I was pretty much writing this one part at a time & basically winging it until the last ten chapters, I didn’t realize how much i’d written until I was done. when I put it all together & looked at the chapters & the word count I was just like holy fuck I actually wrote a book. like I did that. the thing I thought I could never do, I did. I essentially wrote an entire book, in real time with y’all, without even realizing it

publishing my own copy was a pain in the ASS (the first one ended up coming out like a textbook, the one I shared was a second attempt, & it’s still a hot mess, but it’s better). but I had a lot of fun designing the cover & the back, & just holding something I created in my hands was a surreal and emotional moment

the main inspiration with this book is kastle bc we were robbed so I had to do it myself. this is basically me taking the reins & being like no no no, this is what happened, the end. so if born again fucks us over again, at least we have the bodyguard

my copy is sitting proudly on my bookshelf, but I will confess, I have not read it. I don’t read my own work. I did skim through previous chapters when I wrote new ones, bc I have a terrible memory & sometimes I forget what I wrote, but I haven’t sat down & actually read it from start to finish. i’m definitely my own worst critic, in everything I do. but maybe one day I will sit down and read it (although I’ll probably just point out my own mistakes & come up with new ideas & be like damn you should’ve done that instead)

I think the bodyguard will always be my biggest accomplishment & my favorite thing I’ve ever done (even if I do publish an actual book someday) because one, I didn’t think I could do it, & two because of the community it brought me. being in these fandoms has led me to so many incredible people (like you <3) who i’ve been lucky enough to befriend & get to know, & I truly had so much fun reading through all the comments & theories on my own work. I looked forward to it every single time I put a new chapter up. your excitement made me even more excited. & I was overwhelmed by how positive it all was like I was expecting criticism, as there is with everything, but it was literally nothing but positivity & that shocked me & elated me. there are so many incredibly talented authors on here, & I feel so honored that so many of yall consider me one of them

It’s very likely that pay it forward refers to the fact that bobby offering her interim captain has spurred her into actively taking control of her career and pursuing something that interests her - I wouldn’t even be surprised if we see her as the captain on that helo!!!

Since I have no one to talk to about this Deadpool fanfic I'm writing, imma just post it here to get it off my chest.

It's a trans AU where Wade powers won't allow HRT and he never got to transition before getting cancer and his powers. And while he can still look masculine enough, the Avengers still misgender him cause they're jerks. The idea is how some cis people will misgender trans people that they hate cause "they don't deserve it". I plan on adding another trans character that the Avengers do gender correctly and there will be some drama on that. It might be Spidey cause 2ish years ago my plan was to write t4t Spideypool and then I got sucked into COD fandom for too long and then BG3.

Spider-Man doesn't misgender him, he's kind of part of the Avengers in this AU but not really and I think imma have Daredevil and Moon Knight be part of Spidey's "crew" since in the comics they all are kind of are meh about the Avengers. Like yeah they'll help the team out but mostly cause they're in the neighborhood.

I'm leaning towards Moon Knight was part of the Avengers and got kicked out because of the shit he pulled. Also I'm leaning towards Spidey and Moon Knight dating cause why the fuck is this line of thought canon:

I also am one of the very few people that ship Moon Knight and Deadpool and something about that pairing fuels me but tbh I ship Wade with almost anyone just to think about him. BUT I don't want this fic to be just about romance, like it'll happen cause I'm a sucker for romance drama, but I want Wade to have friends that care about him.

Like stomaching your coworker heroes being transphobic to be civil cause you got your dream job finally and feeling like your worth as a human being be in the gutter while also having low self-esteem totally sucks. And Wade doesn't have that many friends and the few he does use him like he has no feelings cause he makes so many jokes. Honestly I'll probably have him fall in love with his friends to get the drama going but probably will settle for them being polyamorous cause Wade deserves all the boyfriends

Anyways, I decided to combine another Deadpool fic I started where he was on secret mission and he was a stripper LOLOL so I'm moving some of those ideas over but instead of Wade being excited to be a pretty boy, Wade is depressed cause he's a lady stripper who "looks like Barbie with depression".
