In Pearl’s dreams, sometimes she says this to Gem:

“Sometimes I think you’d like me better if I actually were an attack dog.”

The actual answer she gets back differently depending on the dream, and the day, and what kind of things that Pearl had last done. Sometimes Gem tells her:

“Aww, Pearlie, don’t be like that. You’re more useful than a dog would ever be.”

Sometimes Gem tells her:

“You can be a dog now, if you’d like.”

Sometimes Gem tells her:

“You’re more important than that, really.”

Sometimes Gem tells her:

“You wouldn’t be nearly as scary if you were! Isn’t what makes you scary that you’re human, but not?”

Sometimes Gem tells her:

“I do too.”

None of these are what Pearl wants to hear, of course. Even in Pearl’s subconscious, Gem is never going to give her an answer that works. Gem is never going to give her an answer that’s real. Pearl isn’t that prone to self-delusion. Gem is never going to, in these dream conversations, hold her and tell her “that’s not true” and mean it. That’s why she’s never said it.

Well, that, and that Pearl isn’t sure that’s what she wants either. She’s not sure that’s an answer that would get at the hunger. At the thing she needs. That would get at something that’s burned her, and burned her, and burned her, and burned—

Well, that and she’s dead now. So. You know.

Even if she wanted an answer, she isn’t getting one.

So there’s this artist, Alex Schaefer, who makes a bunch of paintings of Chase Bank burning.

and I think it’s incredibly funny but

I just read this bit from the artist and

This is a "plein air" painting which means I set up my easel right across the street of this Chase bank in my city and painted it like it had caught fire. The police questioned me on the spot. Three weeks later Homeland Security was knocking on the door to my home. The question they kept asking me was "Do you hate these banks?" I can honestly say yes.

And I just think this is the greatest artist statement I’ve ever read.

At this point if they actually wanted to make a unique retelling of Dracula, they should have Quincey as the main character, market it as a tragic Western/British romance, and then halfway through drop us into the plot of Dracula

Last song: 22:41 by Danger, alternatively known as 2emedanger. This song always makes me go absolutely bananas. I'm speed skating through a neon cyberpunk future smashing the headlights of cop cars. I'm a beast running from pursuing predators. I'm sword fighting a zombie horde. I'm a fighter jet pilot caught in a horrible storm of flighted, hostile aliens. That kind of song.

Last book: I haven't read many books these days, it just doesn't work with my lifestyle of constantly doing stuff with my hands. I did listen to When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey. It was OK, but felt rather low stakes for being a "we just killed a guy" book. Venomous Lumpsucker by Ned Beauman I did read in print, however, and really liked it. Big recommend.

Last movie: The Princess Bride, because a friend hadn't seen it yet.

Last tv show: The Race! German free-to-watch TV show about 4 young adults trying to get from Paris to Turkey with no phone and no money. Very entertaining.

Favorite color: I really like browns. Other than that, the color of the inside of a ripe yellow nectarine.

Spicy, sweet, or savory: Savory, I guess? I'll eat every potato chip near me. But I like spicy things too.

Current obsession(s): Daft Punk and Tron Legacy of course, but I don't have time or energy for them right now I guess... it's also lonely again :')

Last search: "czech school menstrual products" because I heard that students would be receiving free menstrual products starting 2026! Hell yeah!
