[C] 'SWAPPED' Styles: Joe Swanson + Kronk by Mast3r-Rainb0w
Joe Swanson is made in the “The Emperor's New Groove” artstyle, while Kronk is made in the “Family Guy” artstyle. As you can tell, their native artstyles are SWAPPED with each other, making this interesting combination you see here. This was a commission I made via Deviantart. Enjoy the fanart!

Why did no one tell me about Cats Don't Dance? I had to hear it mentioned in an off-hand line in a Youtube video as an example of a good movie that flopped because it was screwed over by the studio, then I had to seek it out for myself, and only then find out:
It was the first non-Disney movie to win the Annie Award for Best Picture (it beat out Hercules).
It's an animated tribute to 1930s movie musicals done in the 1990s, which gives it a very Animaniacs vibe.
It has an insanely energetic and stretchy animation style.
It gives us the story of a starry-eyed song-and-dance man (who happens to be a talking cat) who leaves small-town Indiana hoping to make it big in Hollywood, only to find that talking animals don't get any starring roles. And then of course he meets a motley crew of eccentric animal actors who've had to content themselves with stereotyped bit parts and inspire them to try for better.
It has a romance where the cynical girl who had her dreams crushed gets inspired by the innocent, wide-eyed idealist to chase after hope again. (Which happens to be one of my special favorite kind of romances).
It's directed by a guy who'd go on to direct The Emperor's New Groove.
It's got songs by Randy Newman.
Scott Bakula voices the lead (and has a surprisingly decent singing voice).
Don Knotts plays a superstitious turtle.
There is a piano-playing elephant voiced by John Rhys-Davies.
The actress who voiced Cruella de Ville came out of retirement to voice a chain-smoking elderly fish (who might be my favorite side character).
Gene Kelly did the choreography (and it was the last project he worked on before his death).
The villain is an utterly insane Shirley-Temple-type child star who gets some of the most over-the-top animation I've ever seen.
She has a giant monstrous butler--like, it is absurd how giant this guy is.
And there are wild setpieces and big musical numbers and a scene with a clever use of color to show inner emotions.
It's not like the greatest movie ever made or anything, but it's a solid B-tier story that's a lot of fun and happens to perfectly fit my taste in so many ways, so I'm upset no one bothered to alert me to its existence.

Propaganda
Veronica Lake (I Married a Witch, Sullivan's Travels)—her look is so iconic they used her as a visual model for jessica rabbit in who framed roger rabbit and a bunch of other femme fatale types in cartoons and live action alike. i didnt think i liked women and then i saw her in sullivans travels and said gee i hope this doesnt awaken anything in me! every role ive seen her in she absolutely oozes an aura of "i know people would ask me to step on them" and her EYES bro every photo ive looked at for this submission its like shes piercing thru time and space to judge me <3
Eartha Kitt (Anna Lucasta, St. Louis Blues)—My friend and I have a saying: NOBODY is Eartha Kitt. A thousand have tried, and they've all come up empty and will continue to do so. Everyone knows her for something: from "Santa Baby" to Yzma in Emperor's New Groove to Catwoman to making Lady Bird Johnson cry for the Vietnam War. She was a master of comedy and sex, an extremely vocal activist, and she aged like fine wine... I honestly don't know what I can say about her that hasn't already been said, so I'll stick to linking all my propaganda. Like what else do you want from me. She was iconic at everything she ever did. Literally name another. How can anyone even think of her and not want to absolutely drown?
This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Veronica Lake:
Tumblr media
Her HAIR, her FIGURE, her VOICE, the way she wore LEATHER AND SANG SONGS FOR NO REASON.
Tumblr media
I don't believe there's a person on earth who can watch Veronica Lake in I Married A Witch and not be struck by how gorgeous she is. She had that youthful wonder about her that almost every Hollywood starlet was trying to achieve. Her hairstyle (peekaboo bangs) became an iconic Hollywood style after she popularized it, and made her signature look all the more suggestive. Also, witches are tumblrs favorite!
Tumblr media
ICONIC hair sweep
The US government literally begged her to change her hairstyle because it was TOO HOT to handle and women who copied it were getting their hair caught in machinery
Tumblr media
Her hairstyle was so iconic and popular that the war department had to come out with a PSA instructing lady ironworkers with ways they could pin their hair up to avoid it getting bound in machinery. [https://veteranlife.com/military-history/veronica-lake/]
Tumblr media
She played a lot of femme fatale roles but my favorite is Sullivan’s Travels opposite Joel McRea, which is a comedy. She became famous for her hair style at the time—she wore it long and parted on one side so it would fall over half her face in a very sexy way. They called it a peek-a-boo I think. You’ve definitely seen Bugs Bunny dressed up like her, so I think if she’s being honored in such a way she’s very cool.
Tumblr media
look at her
she's GORGEOUS in her little witch outfits that she wore for promos and also in the oversized coats and pajamas she wore throughout the movie...she's got RANGE
Tumblr media
My Grandpa supposedly dated her in high school, he drove her to school in his car every day. This is legend in the family.
She has gorgeous hair, has got the smouldering look over the shoulder down PAT, and is just drop-dead gorgeous too!
Tumblr media
Schizophrenic icon, popularized the peekaboo hairdo long before Jessica Rabbit
She’s just so prettyyyyy
Tumblr media
So much hot in such a tiny package. She was no more than 5 feet tall, and some reports claim as small as 4'9"
Tumblr media
If you picture a femme fatale in your head, almost certainly Veronica Lake had a hand in shaping the image you think of. She came to embody the look of the noir leading lady as well as the sound and the performance. Certified Noir Baddie.
Tumblr media
Eartha Kitt:
Tumblr media
"A hot vintage woman who was not just known for her voice, beauty, poise, and presence, but also her unapologetic ways of speaking about how she was mistreated in the show business as a girl who grew up on cotton fields in South Carolina in the 1930s through the 1940s coming to Broadway first and then Hollywood."
Tumblr media
"Have you watched her sing?? Have you seen her face?? Have you heard her talk?? How could you not fall instantly in love. She makes me incoherent with how hot she is."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"She can ACT she can SING she can speak FOUR LANGUAGES she is a GODDESS!!! Although she is (rightfully) remembered for her singing, TV appearances (Catwoman my beloved), and later film roles, her early appearances in film are no less impressive or noteworthy!! She’s an amazing actress with so much charisma in every role. She was also blacklisted from Hollywood for 10 years for criticizing the Johnson administration/Vietnam War, so. Iconic. Also Orson Welles apparently called her “the most exciting woman in the world.”
Tumblr media
"She had such a stunning, remarkable appearance, like she could tear you to shreds with just a glance- but the most undeniable part of her hotness was her voice, and it makes sense that it's what most people nowadays know her for. Nothing encapsulates the sheer magnetism of her singing better than this clip of her and Nat King Cole in St. Louis Blues, she pops in at 2:49. Also I know it's post-1970 but her song that was cut from Emperor's New Groove is likely to make you feel Feelings."
Tumblr media
Even with as racist as Hollywood was in the 1950s and 60s, Eartha Kitt STILL managed to have a thriving career. She also once had a threesome with Paul Newman and James Dean, and called out LBJ over the Vietnam War so hard that it made First Lady Johnson cry. Eartha Kitt was talented, sexy, and a total badass activist.

To everyone wondering what's happening on Twitter
A lot of stuff was "leaked" online, all of them being Disney pilots/pitch bibles (ex. Gravity falls pilot, Emperor's new groove new skool show pitch bible, Sofia the first pitch bible ECT.).
One of the leaked pilots was for a pilot episode of a cartoon called "Shed force" by Matt Danner from 2012. It has an amazing art style and death metal. Back to the main topic-
Basically everyone is thirsting over the villain, his name is Nordic Bunny and he looks like this:

hiii! In regards to the "Guillermo del Toro Says “We Have to Rescue” Studio Animation From “Emoji-Style Behavior”" article/statement, do u have examples of animation that specifically is & is not this type of expression/animation? Bc it's rly hard for me to actually picture this and like I need examples ahaha
Disclaimer - I was not at this specific talk, so I don't have the full context and I know from reliable sources - friends of mine that DID attend it - that it's not all he said there, so that article is pretty much only relying spicy chosen bits. That being said, I will focus on this paragraph.
Getting more specific, he went on to detail what he despises about certain lazy proclivities in commercial animation, notably how characters and emotions are “codified into a sort of teenage rom-com, almost emoji-style behavior.” He added, “[If] I see a character raising his fucking eyebrow, or crossing his arms, having a sassy pose — oh, I hate that shit. [Why] does everything act as if they’re in a sitcom? I think it is emotional pornography. All the families are happy and sassy and quick, everyone has a one-liner. Well, my dad was boring. I was boring. Everybody in my family was boring. We had no one-liners. We’re all fucked up. That’s what I want to see animated. I would love to see real life in animation. I actually think it’s urgent. think it’s urgent to see real life in animation.”
What he talks about here is something I find omnipresent in modern American animation, or from studios that are funded by and/or trying to sell to americans (ex: Illumination McGuff). Here del Toro specifically mentions characters and emotions and how they are codified, which would include how characters are written, how animated their emotions and body language are, how they interact... He also mentions studio animation, an important distinction - this does not include indie animators!
A few things, adding * to those he's specifically calling out here, and more of my own that are not stated but I feel match the style
*one liners
*the "dreamworks face"
*sassy attitude
*quick banter
*taking poses
looking into the camera
overtly smooth, cartoony body language
characters explaining their emotions, plot resolutions around this
I will now get to examples, starting by a comparison between two animated films. Both of these films are contemporary, family-audience, french animated films. They share similarities in setting, being medieval fantasy fairytales about female heroes. One of these films was made with an american audience in mind (Pil), and the other caters to a french audience (Dragon Princess). You can compare how the characters act in both trailers:
youtube
youtube
Try and only focus on dialog, body language and expressions, barring art style and story!
Feature films that, in my opinion, also fit that "emoji style behaviour" (* for those I have not fully watched) any why:
Turning Red: the sass, the one liners, body language, camera looking, quick banter, plot resolution with characters explaining their emotions. The whole film fits
Puss in Boots: The last wish: sass, one liners, body language, banter, characters explaining their emotions. Scenes like Puss meeting his past lives and the dog's dialog are strong offenders
The emperor's new groove: sass, one liners, posing, banter
Encanto: sass, posing, banter; the explaining their emotions to drive the plot is ridiculously present to the point where I'd say del Toro was vagueing that one with the family example
Klaus: posing, banter, body language, explaining their emotions
*Nimona: sass, posing, banter, expressions...I only watched the trailer so can't say much but it leans HARD into the rapid fire quip territory with emotional resolution
*Trolls: sass, posing, banter, body language, camera looking...
Regarding films that do not do this, the quick answer would be...watch foreign (=not american) and/or older films. Nowadays with internet a massive catalogue is available, although the USA has such a monopoly on animation via its advertising budget other countries don't have that those films can be harder to find especially if you only use english-speaking internet.
As most studio animation is for a young or family audience and my entire example list above is, I will give some recommendations of films that are also for such an audience, but with older and worldwide picks. Some of these films are fully available on YouTube (although not in english always), so I'll be linking that when possible!
Mom is pouring rain (France, 2020s) (trailer): A shorter film about a little girl sent to live with her grandmother while her mom heals from depression. Has emotions front and center but expressed and animated in a way typical of modern french animation, with cartoony designs but subtler, more "boring" acting
The little prince and the eight headed dragon (Japan, 1960s): Beautifully animated in a style distinct from anime, this is a simple folktale adaptation. Fully on YouTube, albeit in its original english dub who's quality is frankly not great.
Next! (UK, 1990s): Stop motion short by an animator who specifically explores subtler, harder to animate expressions, as well as the art of theater, represented here by a Shakespear puppet playing out his works as a one-man show.
Ramayana (India, 1990s): Animated version of the legend of the same name, coupling a Ghibli art style with your ancient legend's large scale battles and polite heroes.
Ne Zha (China, 2010s)(trailer): that trailer is dead serious, it's actually a pretty damn silly movie! Including this one because as a big CGI animated film it's interesting to compare to what Pixar/Dreamworks/etc is doing.
...I'm realizing that I included a whole lot of animated folk tales so for modern chinese animation I'll also name Legend of Hei (2020s)(trailer), an original fantasy film with indie origins and a whole lot of over the top action.
As for films from the US that do NOT match that style? As a country the US has a rich history of animation asides of Disney! I personally grew up on Tex Avery and Looney Tunes cartoons who (pre-90s) are great examples of this.
For more adult films, I'll link my list of mature animation recommendations!
My ask remains opens for any clarifications :) have a nice day!

Yev Quispe (TWST OC)
Twisted from The Emperor's New Groove
“The new Housewarden of Pomefiore appointed after Vil Schoenheit's third year. A remarkably beautiful young man with skills rivaling the most experienced apothecaries. He demands attention and respect from all due to his status as a young heir, lest you become an unwilling subject in his experiments.”

Ehe~
Got another load of doodles!
First some character studies of Coco and Timber after watching The Emperor's New Groove for the millionth time and getting a character design bug. That movie is peak character design. It's just peak in a lot of ways, actually.
There's some shirtless Timber ahead, if that's uncomfortable for anyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I keep wanting to sit down and try to better unify everybody style wise, but I keep getting distracted. ;w;
And then someone called Brook pretty, and it sent me down a Brook spiral.
Tumblr media
This is a joke I've had in mind for awhile, I finally got to put it to action, lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this woman dearly~<3
Confident, by Demi Lovato is a good theme for her~
And some Talon and the twins! :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a noticeable trend in my stories and Talon is part of it.

Everyone vote for Kronk in round 3
Btw for round 2 since there's an uneven number of characters I'm giving Kronk an automatic pass since he is basically the posterchild himbo and will probably destroy just about any character he's matched up against anyway (so he's probably gonna win the whole tournament anyway but it's not about the destination it's about the journey-). Basically Kronk is automatically in round 3 and I'm hoping the character number won't be uneven anymore by then (if it is I may do that thing where a character who got eliminated earlier gets to be brought back by popular demand or something idk-)

My three favorite examples of Disney wasting money making animated films:
1. They storyboarded and began animating the climax of Lilo & Stitch, which involves the characters hijacking a 747 jet and flying it though the skyscrapers of downtown Honolulu. A few weeks before the end of production, 9/11 happens, and the scene has to be completely redone.
2. Jeffrey Katzenberg decides to re-edit The Black Cauldron, after it is basically complete. In a medium that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars a minute to produce, he cuts 12 minutes of completed animation. (yes, every animator in the world still wants to kill him for this)
3. After the success of Elton John's soundtrack for The Lion King, they hire Sting to write eight original songs for The Kingdom of the Sun. The film then gets renamed to The Emperor's New Groove, and is NO LONGER A MUSICAL. They decide to have one song to open the film, though, but after offering the song to Sting, he says he (49) is too old to sing it in the style they want. They then go with Tom Jones (60).
Seriously. They hired a man with 17 Grammy awards, an Emmy and a Golden Globe, the guy with a BMI award for the most played song in radio history (Every Breath You Take), who has sold 100 million records, and they paid him to write eight original songs for them, and THEN decided they didn't want to make a musical after all.
The guy has so many awards WIKIPEDIA DIDN'T PUT THEM ON HIS MAIN PAGE, THEY HAD TO SPLIT THEM OFF INTO A SUBPAGE BECAUSE IT WAS GETTING TOO LONG.

i saw something about a guapoduo ratatouille au.. and i can’t stop thinking about it, do you think you’d write something like that? and if not, do you at least have any thoughts about it?👀
Make it princess and the frog style
Roier was an aspiring chef who was turned into a rat by his evil jealous twin brother
Don’t question it
Meanwhile Cellbit is a serial killer who just escaped from prison and needs a job so he can provide for his newfound son
Yea, Richarlyson broke him out. Don’t question it
Roier is like “oh hey, we can work with this”
And so they do
Roier moves Cellbit around the kitchen, and Cellbit keeps his pretty well paying job
Meanwhile the restaurant owner is Cucurucho, who helped Doied make the Rat Spell in the first place (kinda like emperor’s new groove)
So Cucurucho and Doied work together to get exterminators to come to the restaurant, and they fire Cellbit for uh. Being a literal goddamn escaped convict
Cellbit uses his last moment before being caught to throw Roier the Rat to safety outside of the building. Then, he’s caught by his bosses, but the exterminators don’t catch Roier
By a magic technicality, this act of selfless devotion to a true friend counts as an act of True Love, so Roier is turned back to normal just in time to land in a dumpster, and he’s knocked out
A few hours later, Cellbit is going through the alley calling “Rat! Rat!!” looking for his little rat buddy, but what he finds instead is a hot guy passed out in a dumpster
Hot guy wakes up, sees Cellbit, grins, shouts Cellbit’s name happily, and the whole thing is explained
It’s a fairy tale, don’t worry about it
Together, they come up with a revenge plan
Yippee!
The next day, a food critic is meant to come to the restaurant, and Roier is PISSED about the whole rat thing
So naturally he gathers a bunch of his old rat friends together and gets them to go ruin the kitchens and everything with Cellbit, who locks Cucurucho in a closet
While that’s going on, Roier secretly takes Doied’s place and gives the food critic the worst food EVER!! It’s SO BAD!
The Federation restaurant is naturally shut down, rip to them
Meanwhile Cellbit and Roier start dating and open a little cafe together where Roier can cook and Cellbit can serve coffee. And it’s a happily ever after
The End

Here's a little animation I made today for my thesis project! My sister said that the style reminded her of The Emperor's New Groove, possibly because of some backgrounds, and I do see the resemblance :D I'm pretty happy with the way the water turned out, it's my first real splash animation.

Companions favorite Disney movie?
A/N: Howdy, howdy, folks! I know it's been a while, but I hope y'all enjoy these! 🥰💙💛 I've been extremely busy and have sort of lost motivation for this fandom, but I'm going to try to play Fo4 soon and see if I can muster up some more motivation 😊 I still have some fanfic to write and some reactions to do and I've got to get my butt in gear!
Cait - Brave. It might seem like the obvious choice because, well... ginger twinsies.... But she loves it because of the constant action and the fact that Merida wields a sword and a bow while also riding a horse often at the same time. She also secretly sort of finds herself vicariously living through Merida and wishing she would have had a family like hers with parents that actually loved her.
Curie - Inside Out. It's sciency and presents a fun, creative way of examining the brain's functions. She would prefer that Disney be more realistic, but despite her slight disappointment, she also understands that it has to be presented in a child-friendly way that would keep a kid's attention. A close second for her would be Big Hero 6. Honey Lemon is her hero.
Piper - Zootopia. She finds herself very much relating to Judy Hopps most days. Just a girl in a big city and a big world with the chips stacked against her and hardly anyone on her side as she fights the good fight. She also enjoys Judy's optimistic, sarcastic, energetic spirit that she upkeeps in the face of adversity. It's something that Piper herself has done her best to maintain.
MacCready - Finding Nemo. As a concerned dad with a struggling young son of his own, he can relate to this movie greatly. Plus, a bonus is that he likes to mess with F!Sole about being Dory, which she never seems to appreciate nearly as much as he does most days.
Deacon - The Emperor's New Groove. All of the jokes and the lightheartedness of the overall movie is totally Deacon's style. He always quotes the movie afterward and drives everyone at HQ crazy with his rather awful impression of Yzma.
Codsworth - Flubber. He sort of is crushing on Weebo the robot assistant. Granted, he says he has no sort of manner in which to facilitate such feelings since he is not programmed to feel things like that, but he raves over her enough that everyone can see he clearly has some manner of feelings.
Hancock - A Bug's Life. He doesn't really know why, but it cracks him up every time he turns it on. Of course, he's usually high when he's watched it, but that's not the important part. The important thing is that it's anti-grasshoppers and after the stuff he saw at Nuka-World, that suits him just fine.
Danse - Toy Story. He would rather die than admit it, but he likes the movie for the odd reason that he heavily relates to the spaceman. His perspective on life and his soldier-like dedication to his mission is truly outstanding. He also strangely relates to him in many ways, but he's not quite sure why.
Preston - Brother Bear. He enjoys the deep feelings and meaning behind the film. It's such an underrated yet good film and it has a really great sound track as well. He also has a strange affinity for Toy Story because of Woody and his steady dependability.
Valentine - Old Yeller. It's traditional and it has that sense of old-timey living that Nick can appreciate. He also enjoys the deep emotional quality of the film and the fact that it's about a good, loyal, brave dog. Kind of like Dogmeat.
X6-88 - Maleficent. He enjoys her sense of humor and her sense of taking care of business and revenge when people do her wrong. However, his favorite non-Disney movie is The Matrix. He firmly believes the coursers' design is based on Morpheus and he secretly thinks he looks like him most out of the courser models.
Dogmeat - The Fox and the Hound. He loves nothing more than to howl along with the dog on there. Finally a movie that actually has a character that speaks his language! The dog also actually successfully befriends other animals in a way that Dogmeat never seems to do too well since they're always trying to stomp on him or kill him. He also is a fan of Bolt.
Strong - Monster's Inc. Firstly, Strong doesn't like movies. They're confusing and make no sense because what do you mean those things are not really there? They're standing right in front of him! But he likes Monster's Inc more than most because Mike Wazowski looks like a super-mutant. An ugly, one-eyed freak super-mutant, but nevertheless one of his kind.
