it was the first new game in the series in what was, by its time of release, 9 years

the series had been longtime presumed dead before 4 Special came out in 2019

it was in development during the middle of COVID 2020

it was developed using an engine the team did not have much experience with

the series had not been on console since the Wii & so 5 was designed based off the most successful handheld game because it was their most recent & most popular reference for game structuring

do i wish 5 had done some things differently or had more padding to it in some areas? oh, absolutely. but like…. the state of the team, the world, & the series itself need to be acknowledged before constantly throwing it under the bus. like no shit GoA looks better, it’s being developed on a different engine that its team is likely more familiar with with presumably far more budget available because of 3/4S + 5’s overall commercial success. & because of 5, they know what worked and what didn’t work when bringing the series back to console so they were able to move forward with experimenting and referencing the series’ past console games (particularly Oceans) instead of just what game was the most popular (4).

guardians of azuma as we’ve seen it so far can only exist in this form because of 5, both where it stumbled and succeeded, and i wish people acknowledged the circumstances behind their development periods as being vastly different so putting 5 down to uplift goa up isn’t exactly fair.

I want to start drawing Elain but I keep putting it off because because for Some Reason Nona has her exact same model just with different hair. it bugged me so much when I first noticed it, like Nona’s skirt literally has the Stag-Clan symbol on it and her tattoo/warpaint/whatever it is resembles antlers, she’s like a really important NPC and they didn’t even give her the right armor for her clan lmao

Anyway it’s also annoying because if I want to draw Elain I can’t just copy her in game look and I’ll have to figure out something else entirely

(I mean if you wanted to, maybe you could say her family was originally from Turm Dreng but came north to Enedwaith at some point? and that's why she's got stag-clan symbols on her stuff? but honestly I think it was just an oversight. probably because both the Ox-Clan and Stag-Clan both use blue as their color, so as long as she was wearing blue they went "eh close enough")

Just a little follow up on that last post but just in general I think one of the reasons I've really stopped caring for railing on the Playtime devs... Is just because it feels like so much of it is just speculative nonsense trying to make every single thing they do secretly evil or lazy or bad. Why isn't it enough to discuss the Actual bad things they did [the fact they used to run a shady content farm before doing game work, the fact they tried to sell lore to their fans via NFTs, etc] it's hard for me to engage with content that rightfully critiques that bc oftentimes they then spiral into speculative 'so now we have to tell you why this moment where an employee blinks in the game is code for the devs secretly stole all their code from Bendy and kill babies as a hobby'.

Which makes me turn off my brain and not want to take any other points they make seriously, bc like I said if you lie to me to try and convince me of your point, I'm not gonna take anything else you say seriously bc I won't know if it's true or just something you made up anymore.

It honestly feels like everyone just keeps making shit up bc Poppy Playtime used to be the internet punching bag but now that the NFTs thing isn't the hottest topic to discuss about it anymore we all just need a reason to make fun of it and the people who like it. Which just kinda feels like unfair cringe culture, because if our real problem is the devs being greedy and shady why isn't the same effort put into roasting similar devs like the Bendy team? We can't suddenly say 'well actually being a bit greedy isn't That bad' when it's a team we like instead of one we all decided is 'cringe n bad'.
