HUGEEE drum corps ocs post because they are literally all I think about 24/7

If your’re curious they all march for Blue Stars DBC. Elsie (the girl with brown/black hair) is the corp’s euphonium soloist, Florence (the guy with brown/white hair) is a rook-out snare alternate, and Jon Valdez (the guy with black hair) is the corp’s bass 2 player. Also all of them are 21 and aging out after this season.

Their story is essentially a silly lighthearted romcom and a huge love letter to drum corps as a whole.

some fun Caes facts

his older brother sold him to House Nivaeum to pay off a gambling debt. Caes was 8. his brother has since tragically passed away (Caes had nothing to do with that, of course. his brother was a gambler and a cheat, and his lifestyle was going to catch up to him sooner or later)

his name (Caesonius) comes from caesius meaning blue-grey. he's named for the distinctive pale color of his eyes

he's a classically-trained mage, taught by Magister Aneleus himself. his areas of expertise are subterfuge/spying (mind sliver, message, detect thoughts, invisibility, detect magic, find familiar) and brute force damage (booming blade, eldritch blast, chromatic orb, steel wind strike, disintegrate). Why bother training a spy and an attack dog when you could get both for the price of one?

he keeps a ceremonial dagger on his person as the material component for his weapon-based spell attacks. nothing like dealing 6d10 force damage for stabbing a guy with a tiny knife

he has a small snake familiar named Nizar who can most often be found up his sleeves. never hurts to have an extra pair of eyes or a little help recalling information

he does not have (and never has) any particular loyalty to House Nivaeum, and their ignoble and inglorious end is a constant source of satisfaction

If I had a nickel for every time I got into a piece of media (esp webcomics) largely because the protagonist is female, nb, or just otherwise not a man, only for the creator to introduce a male character who is clearly their favorite and for said male character to completely steal the show, I'd have, like, sooooo many nickels

Something I've found is that Divided Loyalties really doesn't tell us why the Deca actually fall out. We're given the big reason- Millennia and Rallon are functionally dead, Vansell is a CIA member, The Doctor has been expelled, Drax and Mortimus have dropped out, Koschei and Ushas have gone off on research projects, etc- but what about the space in-between? When are the conversations had? Are they had at all? Is it let fester, or is their ending horrific and explosive?

There's a largely unfilled gap between the end of the Doctors Trail and the Beginning of An Unearthly Child and because of that gap we don't really know when the Deca go from "people being effected by grief but who are ultimately sticking together" to "people who would destroy a third of the universe just to watch the others get hurt"

Divided Loyalties Deca Breakdown(Very Opinionated) PART 1

Notable that this section begins with "Gallifrey. Home. Apparently" which sounds like there's some doubt on that topic, or a negative view of the idea.

This section already starts to separate them (at least the Doctor and Koschei) from other time lords, multiple times. Saying "They'll never let us go" and "They have no sense of adventure, Unlike us." says that at least the Doctor doesn't feel a part of the 'they' in this situation, the time lords as a whole.

The Doctor's motivations here are also alluded to, with the line about having no sense of adventure.

Also, these two are already disagreeing, this will continue... basically forever.

Page 92-93 of Divided Loyalties by Gary Russell

This section calls the Deca "The pinnacle of their class" but that is disputed for specifically the Doctor VERY quickly in a couple of pages. (happy Borusa mention) The Capitol is described as infamous as well which is a very big contrast to how the rest of it is mentioned with reverence.

Saying that they are "forbidden to regenerate" implies that they could but are not allowed. (which is an odd way to say this considering the next section of the novel.

This section states that to get regenerative powers they have to be given a genetic coding. It also implies that other than Vansell, Ushas, and Rallon, the kids still need to gain the ability to withstand time travel. (which... ok, we'll talk about that when it comes up again.)

First actual description of another member of the Deca. Drax is a mechanical genius but the narrator doesn't believe in his common sense capabilities.

This point of view combined with the first section's line about Gallifrey leads me to conclude that the (questionably reliable) narrator is the Doctor. This is also implied through the context of the rest of the novel, but we're here for Deca lore. (I love you 5th doctor team though, I promise.)

Drax goes up with a crazy idea, probably knowing it'll be veto'd by the more reasonable/rule-following members of the Deca. The response from Jelpax leads me to think he's one of those two things.

We already know Koschei in the future is kind of a freak maniac, but here he seems a little sarcastic. (I have never heard "put paid" in my life, ofc I can guess what it means on context, but it definitely surprised me.)

Describing Ushas using what she's NOT known for is a cute line, and it tells us that she has a short fuse and she's full of herself (or at least acts that way).

Friend Shaped

The professor clacked his beak sharply three times in the front of the room. The students, around 40 individuals, and many species from across the galactic arm hushed almost immediately. “Welcome back, class. The day for your first planet-side mission to Nemulon 3 is fast approaching, and we've still got a lot of safety training to cover, so let's get started.” The professor stepped aside to allow a projection to display against the board behind him. A picture of a blue, green, and gray planet shone brightly against the dark tapestry of space. Nemulon 3 had been discovered deca-orbits ago but offered a wide variety of biomes that were the perfect blend of challenging and safe to train new recruits to the Galactic Alliance’s Exploration Fleet. “Today we're covering some alien fauna you may encounter while conducting exploratories. Most are small enough that they won't pose much of an issue, but we do have a few category 5 lifeforms that you need to be aware of.” The display behind the professor changed from an image of Nemulon 3 from orbit to a chart topped by 5 images with their respective labels: karindru, oold, dini-dini, barintuna, and great lavalen. Before the professor could start in on the next part of his lecture, a voice spoke out from the middle of the classroom.“That looks like a dog.” The professor stood with his beak half open. He was certainly not used to being interrupted, let alone this early in the lesson. “A what?” He finally choked out. There was a pause as if the offending student was thinking better about drawing more attention to themselves before slowly putting their hand up in the air. It was a human. Cadet Valentina, if the attendance role had been accurate. “I said it… it looks like a dog.” Human Valentina inhaled as if gathering the courage to say more. “They're a carnivorous canine species on earth that humans domesticated thousands of cycles ago and selectively bred to be pets.” The professor’s beak closed with a snap and some of the features near the base of his neck ruffled slightly. “Nemulon 3 is 47 light years away from Earth. Any similarities between each planet’s fauna is purely coincidental, a product of parallel evolution.” The human bowed her head and said nothing else, so the professor continued. “Now, for many of you of larger stature, a single karindru might not pose much of a threat, but their real danger comes from their numbers. They live, travel, and hunt in packs. Thankfully, their method of communicating with each other in their packs are quite loud, so you will hear them long before you see them, and hopefully, before they see you. Typically you’ll hear anything from yipping, chirping, and howling.” “Kind of like coyotes.” The professor stopped and stared at the human again, feathers ruffling once again. “Another kind of canine species back home,” Valentina offered quietly. If the professor was capable of growling, he might have been tempted to at that moment. Instead, he sighed slowly. “I can assure you, trying to get close to these will likely end with your injury or death.” “Well, that's what ancient humans thought about wolves too, but then we bred them into dogs and now they’re our best friends.” “Karindru are not, nor are any native creatures on this planet, your friend. Not now, not ever.” The professor turned sharply back to the board. The entire class was dead silent. Few even dared to breathe. It was quiet enough, in fact, to hear the human mumble under their breath, “If not friend, then why friend-shaped?”

The human was promptly given detention and assigned extra homework of writing “I will not try to domesticate any native fauna on Nemulon 3” one hundred times by hand.

Back on my Deca and nameless bard parallels. Deca is a polearm user but mainly attacks like he is a catalyst user. A shielder who stands there while sending elemental energy to fight. VS Nameless Bard who is a polearm user that uses phys to damage foes. Deca's weapon is super fancy like while NB's weapon looks unassuming. Ironically I think it would be funny if it was a branch from a tree from Sal Vindagnyr. Like the blue of the crystals match some of NB's family's eyes.
