~ EVENT SPOTLIGHT : ECTOCOMP 2024 ~
La Petite Mort or Le Grand Guignol? Either way, itâs going to get spooky!
Ever since October 2007 spooky-game enthusiasts all over the world have a chance to participate in ECTOCOMP, an annual competition for interactive fiction celebrating the SPOOKY MONTH OF HALLOWEENTOBER. Whether you celebrate Halloween, Day of the Dead, All Saint's Eve, or just love ghost stories and creeping people out, this is your time to shine!
Previously organized by Jason Guest for ADRIFT games, the jam is now open to all development platforms. Since the beginning of this initiative, there has been a motivation to unite and strengthen ties between international communities in the IF world. Creators can submit games either in one of the four main languages - English, Spanish, French and German or any other!
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters. Named after the Ghostbustersâ car license plate number ECTO 1, this year the jam pays tribute to the film that inspired the title! Some other subthemes and inspiration prompts are: Spooky adventure, Sweet supernatural, Halloween fest, DĂa de Los Muertos, All Saints', All Souls' Eve and any other festivity or mythology around the world.
As per tradition, Ectocomp has two categories:
La Petite Mort, for those who want to speed-write their game in 4 hours or less.
Le Grand Guignol, for games that, for whatever reason, took longer than 4 hours to write.
When the jam is over, all of the submitted games will be uploaded to the IF Archive.
~ ENDED ~
The voting for IFComp ended and the winners have been announced! Congratulations to the first-place winner, The Bat by Chandler Groover! Check out the complete results for this year's competition.
Another edition of the Bad Art Visual Novel Jam is upon us! Check out the two entries!
~ ONGOING (VOTING) ~
Entries have been submitted for the 6th Spooktober Annual Visual Novel Jam! You can vote for your favourites until October 27th! Every October Friday you can also watch Chizu's sponsored Spooktober Stream where she plays through all submissions!
Find inspiration in dusty old decrepit corners, revivify the forgotten - the Revival Jam 2024 is here! You can now vote for your favourite entries!
~ ONGOING (SUBMITTING) ~

Disabled Rep VN Jam has a very simple premise but a very important message.
Once upon a time, a game jam was held to create stories around the theme of fairy tales⌠and that game jam is the Once Upon A Time VN Jam. Itâs running from October 1st to January 31st.
Concours de Fiction Interactive Francophone 2025 is for all French-speaking enthusiasts. Submissions are accepted until March 3rd 2025.
Are you perhaps a fan of more somber, melancholic themes? Then check out the Dying Year - Visual Novel Jam! You have until the end of the year to participate.
The Black Visual Novel Jam is all about working with creative professional developers who work in visual novels to bring more Black stories to life. The goal is to create a space where Black creators can show their unique storytelling through visual novels.
Bare your teeth and sharpen your claws because the Monstrous Desires 2024 Visual Novel Jam is here! Dedicated to the love of entities, horrors, and monstrosities, this jam will be full of romantic Visual Novels (VN) that heavily focus on a monster may it be original or from classics, folklore, modern media, etc.

Happy Feast Day
Saint Notburga of Rattenberg
1265-1313
Feast Day: September 14
Patronage: servants, peasants, farmers
Saint Notburga was the daughter of German peasants. She was a kitchen maid of Count Henry of Rattenberg and saved the leftovers for the poor. Once asked if she could forgo attending Mass and work more, she said, âLet my sickle be the judge between me and you.â The sickle remained suspended in the air. She is remembered for her hard work, charity and prayerfulness. Many miracles are attributed to her intercession.

On Monday, United States prosecutors in Sacramento, California, unveiled a 15-count indictment accusing Dallas Erin Humber, 34, and Matthew Robert Allison, 37, of serving as core members of a virulent neo-Nazi propaganda network that solicited attacks on federal officials, power infrastructure, people of color, and material support for acts of terrorism both within the US and overseas.
The group, known as the Terrorgram Collective, has produced four publications to dateâa blend of ideological motivation, mass murder worship, neofascist indoctrination, and how-to manuals for chemical weapons attacks, infrastructure sabotage, and ethnic cleansing. The screeds have directly inspired a series of ideologically motivated attacks around the world, including a 2022 mass shooting at an LGBTQ bar in Bratislava, Slovakia; successful attacks on power infrastructure in North Carolina and similar failed plots in Baltimore and New Jersey; and a stabbing spree in the Turkish city of Eskisehir.
Federal prosecutors allege Humber, Allison, and other Terrorgram Collective members were in the process of compiling a fifth, yet-to-be-released publication devoted to a pantheon of âsaintsââneofascist mass murderers like Timothy McVeigh and Anders Breivik. The point of this guide, prosecutors claim, was to âinspire Terrorgram users to commit acts of violence.â
Humber and Allison were both federal targets as early as early 2023, but authorities appear to have waited for a year and a half to compile evidence of potential attacks around the world, and for the British governmentâs decision this April to formally ban the Terrorgram Collective, before filing an indictment that could land the defendants in prison for more than two centuries. To date, American authorities have charged at least four individuals allegedly involved in the Terrorgram Collective with terrorism-related offenses.
While the arrests are not the first targeting the Terrorgram CollectiveâSlovakian Pavol âSlovakBroâ BeĹadik and former Atomwaffen Division founder Brandon Russell hold that honorâthe charges against Humber and Allison represent a major change from how the FBI and US Department of Justice approach diffuse âaccelerationistâ terrorismâthe nihilist brand of neofascism that seeks to speed up societal collapse and the ascent of a Fourth Reich through mass shootings, bombings, and other acts of terrorism by âlone wolfâ actors. Relying on the UK governmentâs April order declaring the Terrorgram Collective a banned terrorist group and a little-employed section of the âmaterial support for terrorismâ section of the US criminal code, federal prosecutors are finally taking an aggressive, whole-of-law approach to violent neofascist extremism.
âWhat it shows is exactly what Iâve been arguing for years: All the tools they need to do this work, they have,â says Michael German, a former FBI special agent and a liberty and national security fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice, an NYU School of Law nonprofit. German points to years of arguments by the FBI and Department of Justice that they are hamstrung by existing laws when it comes to tackling violent extremists within the United States. âIt also reveals the false separation that the government makes about international and domestic terrorismâwhite supremacy has always been transnational.â
In 2018, German coauthored a study of federal domestic terrorism prosecutions that argued existing laws were sufficient to tackle domestic terrorism, pointing to a particular statute used to charge Humber and Allison with material support. âItâs the material support statute the DOJ forgot,â says German.
The UKâs order against the Terrorgram Collective provided American authorities a basis for labeling a diffusive, ostensibly domestic propaganda group as a âtransnational terrorist organizationâ in a detention motion filed on Tuesday, potentially opening Humber and Allison up to deleterious additional charges and sentencing enhancements. In other words, the US is treating Terrorgram in ways similar to how it has treated Islamist terrorist organizations.
âI would think of this case more like an old-school terrorism investigation, where you have a leadership cell that pushed info to followers and radicalized them into action,â says Seamus Hughes, a terrorism researcher at the University of Nebraska Omaha, of the indictmentâs allegations against Humber and Allison.
The role of undercover agents in at least two of the Terrorgram federal prosecutions, the DOJâs repeated citation of the groupâs outlawed status in Great Britain as basis for labeling it a transnational terrorism organization, and the alleged targeting of power infrastructure by participants in the propaganda network, Hughes says, all point to US law enforcement taking a new approach to tackling violent right-wing extremism.
âThe vast majority of material support cases are jihadi, but right here, they [allegedly] inspired an individual to plot an attack against a power plant,â he adds. âThatâs critical infrastructure and is the lynchpin for the material support of terrorism charge.â
The power infrastructure plot Hughes references is the case of Andrew Takhistov, an 18-year-old New Jersey man charged in July with soliciting another individual to attack energy facilities. Court documents describe Tahkistov as a virulently hateful young man who fantasized about attacking a synagogue and participated in a March 2024 demonstration by an Atlantic Cityâbased âactive clubâ in support of jailed neo-Nazi leader Robert Rundo, was ever-present in the Terrogram Collectiveâs Telegram channels.
Along with allegedly circulating propaganda from the Terrorgram Collective and urging lone-wolf attacks, the feds claim in court records that Tahkistov bragged about participating in the production of the groupâs âHard Resetâ publication, describing it as âthe perfect starting guideâ for a lone-wolf terrorist. âIt has ideology, it has how-to guides, it has ideas for funny things, it goes into how you should plan it, it goes into the thought process,â Takhistov allegedly told an undercover FBI agent with whom he plotted the erstwhile attack on power stations near North Brunswick and New Brunswick, New Jersey.
These details were included in Tahkistovâs indictment, which also outlined his alleged plans to travel to Russia and join the Russian Volunteer Corps, a neo-Nazi combat battalion fighting for the Ukrainian military, which was founded by Denis Kapustin, an Azov Movementâconnected extremist who tried to help Rundo flee the US in 2018, in order to gain weapons expertise and military training that would allow him to carry out more effective acts of ideologically motivated terrorism once back in the United States.
Takhistov is in custody and will next appear in court on October 9. He has pleaded not guilty.
Humber and Allison are longtime radicals. Humberâs radicalization appeared to start decades ago, per a report by extremism researchers at Left Coast Right Watch. Research obtained by this reporter shows Humber ran more than two dozen extreme right-wing propaganda channels on Telegram, which circulated the Terrorgram Collectiveâs material as well as other accelerationist content.
In recent years, aside from narrating audio books of neofascist manifestos and propaganda tracts, Humber also corresponded with convicted domestic terrorist Dylann Roof and with Atomwaffen Division founder Brandon Russell, who ended up joining their collective. âThereâs no quitting our worldview. Itâs a lifelong commitment,â Humber allegedly told Russell in a recorded jailhouse call following the latterâs arrest in February 2023. Her participation in the network, according to a March 15, 2022, Telegram post included in court filings by prosecutors, was to mold potential terrorists for action. âNo military is fighting for us. No govt is protecting our people and defending our interests. The ONLY people fighting for us are lone wolves,â Humber wrote, in reference to a teenager she was trying to indoctrinate. âHeâs like 18 yo and seems very impressionable, Iâm trying to radicalize him.â
When the FBI raided Humberâs Elk Grove home last week, they recovered reams of Nazi propaganda, 3D-printed firearmsâincluding a homemade AR-15 pattern rifleâa short-barreled rifle, a 3D printer, unregistered handguns, and high-capacity magazines, which remain illegal in California. She remains held without bail.
Allison, who was born in Southern California, lives in a high-end apartment building in downtown Boise, Idaho, and, according to court documents, does not hold a steady job. He doesnât appear to have a criminal record, aside from a June 2022 misdemeanor. There are very few traces of Allison online, but details cobbled together by researchers indicate he drifted steadily to the right from 2018 onward, starting with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlsonâs content and then moving steadily in the direction of Timothy McVeigh, The Order founder Robert Jay Mathews, and finally, the skull-masked, nihilistic neofascism popularized by the Atomwaffen Division at the end of the last decade.
Under the alias âBanThisChannel,â Allison was one of the most prolific disseminators of Terrorgramâs propaganda materials and was prolific in extreme-right-wing Telegram channels, commiserating with other SoCal skinheads about racial attacks in days gone by and connecting other individuals to militant groups like the Atomwaffen Division. Research obtained by this reporter indicates he worked part-time as a video producer and was the editor who compiled a number of âsizzle reelsâ for the Terrorgram Collectiveâs propaganda output online, including a set entitled âThe BTC Movie Trilogyâ that Takhistov sought out for inspiration.
Nineteen-year-old Slovakian teenager Juraj KrajÄĂk, the perpetrator of the 2022 Bratislava massacre, was in extensive contact with Humber and Allison for at least a year prior to the attack, and sent his manifesto to Allison after he carried out his mass murder, which explicitly cited Terrorgram Collective publications and thanked the group for inspiring him to act. Allison then circulated the manifesto through the groupâs Telegram channels. The group proceeded to claim KrajÄĂk as âtheir first saint.â
Allisonâs commitment to neofascism and white supremacy appears to have run deepââI wonât quit til Iâm dead. my only goal in life is to fucking destroy the enemy,â Allison declared in a Telegram post cited by federal prosecutors. Both he and Humber, according to a government detention motion, sought to identify the informant in Brandon Russellâs criminal case. Allison advocated adding the suspected snitch to âThe Listâ (a collection of federal officials, journalists, businessmen, and other perceived enemies circulated by the Terrorgram Collective as potential assassination targets), while Humber allegedly told Russell in a recorded jailhouse call in August 2023 that she had photographs of the suspected informant and was running them through facial recognition software.
When Allison was arrested last week, authorities say, he had a backpack loaded with what appeared to be a âbug-out kitâ comprised of zip ties, a gun, duct tape, ammunition, a knife, lockpicking tools, two phones, and a thumb drive. When law enforcement searched his apartment, they turned up an assault rifle, two laptops, an external hard drive, and another âgo bagâ containing $1,500 in cash, clothes, a passport, ziplock bags full of pills, ammunition, a skull mask balaclava, sim cards, and a birth certificate.
In a videotaped interview following his arrest, Allison allegedly confessed to his participation in the Terrorgram Collective and âengaging in acts alleged in the General Allegations of the Indictment.â
Law enforcement consider Humber and Allison threats to their community, and to authorities as well: Humber allegedly worked with Russell to try to identify a suspected government witness in the Atomwaffen Division founderâs current criminal case in Baltimore, according to recorded jailhouse phone calls. Witnesses in Russellâs upcoming trial this November will testify in a closed courtroom to avoid being identified, a highly unusual precaution. In a sealing motion, prosecutors state that not only are additional arrests of Terrogram Collective members likely, but the groupâs membership poses a severe danger to law enforcement and cooperating witnesses alike: âDefendants' many associates, both in the United States and internationally, may seek to harm perceived law enforcement or law enforcement cooperators in retribution for their role in this investigation.â
Allison is currently detained without bail and is set to appear in federal court in Boise on September 18 for a detention hearing.
The volume of evidence laid out against Humber and Allison in both the indictment and detention motion, says Hughes, shows the feds have significantly altered their approach to both far-right terrorism and particularly "lone wolf" accelerationists who have perpetrated massacres ranging from Christchurch in 2019 to Buffalo in 2022.
âWhen they go further than they have in the past to lay out the transnational connections and overlay a material support charge, it shows that either the feds are trying to make a point, or they were very concerned about these particular actors,â Hughes says.
Senior attorneys from the DOJâs Civil Rights and National Security divisions are listed on the court filings in this matter, another indication that the top ranks of the Biden administrationâs Justice Department called the shots on the Terrorgram Collective investigation.
âTo build a case in this fashion is a decision that gets made at Main Justice,â Hughes says. âSomeone high up decided to sign off on this.â

Other than leper king and his heirs which book would you recommend for research on Baldwin iv of Jerusalem?
All right then, buckle up for some nerdery! đ
I will preface this by saying that I am not a total expert on Baldwin and haven't done a colossal amount of research specifically on him. I could chew your ear off prattling on about the general world of the crusader kingdoms, their politics, and about Raymond III of Tripoli and Sibylla of Jerusalem in particular, but Baldwin isn't my main interest here. Also, as far as I know, Hamilton's study is the only longer academic work centred solely around Baldwin. Hence, in order to learn more about your fav and the world he lived in, I'd recommend reading a little more broadly. Being a king, he is featured (at least in some capacity) in most publications that deal with the Latin kingdoms in the latter half of the 12th century.
That said, have a list:
Piers D. Mitchell: "Leprosy and the Case of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem: Microbacterial Disease in the Crusader States of the 12th and 13th Centuries", International Journal of Leprosy, vol. 61, no. 2, 1993, pp. 283-91. Pretty self-explanatory. You can find this article on the internet; Mitchell also has a few other publications that deal with medicine in the crusader states, so you might find some additional Baldwin stuff there as well.
Elma Brenner: "Recent Perspectives on Leprosy in Medieval Western Europe", History Compass, vol. 8, no. 5, 2010, pp. 388-406. Has a little bit on Baldwin, might be useful if you want to find out more about how the disease was regarded by his contemporaries.
Helen J. Nicholson: Sybil, Queen of Jerusalem, 1186-1190. Routledge, 2022. This is a really good and really recent one that I was lucky enough to find in my uni library. Of course Sibylla-centred, but gives a good overview of the politics in Outremer and of course has passages about Baldwin in it. Also look into some of Nicholson's other publications if you're interested in the role of women in the context of crusading.
Kevin James Lewis: The Counts of Tripoli and Lebanon in the Twelfth Century: Sons of Saint Gilles. Routledge, 2017. Obviously mostly a Raymond-centric source, but it is also relatively recent and has a good chunk on Baldwin in the chapter where Lewis talks about Raymond's time as Baldwin's regent.
Joshua Prawer: Crusader Institutions. Oxford University Press, 1980. More politics to be found here, but very well put together. Prawer was an extremely prolific scholar where the history of the Latin East and the crusades was concerned, so - once again: if you're interested, look up his other works.
Jonathan Riley-Smith: The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades, Oxford University Press, 1997. Good overview that goes into detail about the mentality among crusaders and aspects of daily life. Again, Riley-Smith is one of the authorities in the field, so looking into his bibliography might be worth a shot.
If you're into military history, the works of Benjamin Z. Kedar, John France - or, if you want something more dated, R.C. Smail - might be of interest to you. They mostly cover general points of Frankish and Muslim warfare or the Battle of Hattin in particular (other than in Hamilton or in some of the primary sources from the crusader period, I've never come across an article on the Battle of Montgisard), but might be helpful if you want to get a feel for what life was like at the time.
Hans-Eberhard Mayer is also definitely worth a look as a scholar, even though his works are a bit older now. However, I'm not sure how much of his stuff you can find in translation - I've only read him in German.
For the physical setting of crusader-period Jerusalem and the material culture, I very heartily recommend two works written or edited by Adrian J. Boas: Jerusalem in the Time of the Crusades: Society, Landscape and Art in the Holy City under Frankish Rule (Routledge, 2001) and The Crusader World (Routledge, 2016). I consult both of these frequently for world-building in my fic writing.
If you want something on the general concept of the knight / chivalry, Maurice Keen's Chivalry (Yale University Press, 2005) might be a good start. For a detailed analysis of medieval courtly culture, I recommend Joachim Bumke's Courtly Culture: Literature and Society in the High Middle Ages (2000, English translation by Thomas Dunlap). That thing was invaluable when I was writing my BA thesis. And if you'd like to know more about the literary life of the crusaders, there is a recent publication called Literature of the Crusades (Cambridge University Press, 2019) edited by Simon Parsons and Linda M. Paterson that I also found rather good.
For fashion: The various Osprey Military History books are a good choice if you want visual representations of knightly dress. There's also a collection of essays called Encountering Medieval Textiles and Dress: Objects, Texts, Images (Palgrave Macmillan, 2002) edited by DĂŠsirĂŠe Koslin and Janet Snyder, which is one of the better ones I've found, as most books about medieval fashion focus mostly on later centuries. This one might be a bit hard to get through, though, if you don't have some kind of background knowledge about medieval texts or architecture.
If you want something less strictly academic and more in the vein of popular history, you might want to try James Reston's Warriors of God (2002) or the much more dated but rather fanboy-ish The Crusades: A History (also sometimes titled The Dream and The Tomb) by Robert Payne, which is very pro-Baldwin.
Other than that, I'll link you an older post about fictional depictions of Baldwin and other assorted good bois and girls from KoH. I hope this will scratch the Baldwin itch for you!
And: If anyone has more suggestions, of course do feel free to add them!
#asks#kingdom of heaven 2005#baldwin iv#sibylla of jerusalem#raymond iii of tripoli#balian of ibelin#crusades#snippets of actual history#book recommendations#i could add so many more books to that list lol#maybe i'll post a longer list of all the stuff i have read one day

SERIES MASTERPOST
The red, cotton sheets are soft against your skin as you wake up, blinking away the fog of sleep. Sunlight shines in through the french doors, making the room almost too bright as your eyes adjust to the light. But, the most important thing that you notice is the absence of that familiar, solid, warmth beside you. Your head pops up from the pillow, squinting as you scan the room.Â
âSorry I didnât mean to wake ya.â Arthur mumbles, morning voice deep in his chest. Your eyes flicker up to him, buttoning the cuff buttons of his shirt. He glances down at you from his position by the dresser, smiling at your messy hair. The sheets are wrapped around you, leaving your shoulders and back bare, and he runs his eyes over the skin heâd spent all night kissing.Â
âYou were right.â He nods to you, and you sit up on the plush bed, looking down at yourself.Â
âWhat?â You ask, looking down over your skin until you see exactly what he means.
âLeft a mark or two, like you said.â
âShit, Arthur.â You sigh, tossing the blankets off of you as you stand and move to the mirror. There's a few off-colored splotches on your neck and collarbone, love bites that Arthur has left you. You inspect them in the mirror, pulling your hair around to see if it will cover the marks. You hear Arthurâs boots against the floor as he walks up behind your bare form.Â
âTo remember me, just till I'm back.â Arthur chuckles, hands finding your waist as he stares at your reflection in the full length mirror. You frown, remembering that today Arthur has to break Micah out of jail. Youâve been enjoying the absence of his loud, foul mouth and stench that follows him like a bad shadow.
"Be careful. Don't do nothin' heroic for that bastard." You say, turning around in his arms to face him.
"For Micah? Course not." Arthur chuckles, leaning down to press a slow, bittersweet kiss to your lips. You know he can handle his own, but the idea of a jail spring in West Elizabeth unnerves you. You lean into him, lips locking for a moment before you pull away.Â
Your hands rest on his shoulders, and then you slide them to his neckline to straighten the collar of his shirt.Â
"Be careful, mister." You whisper to him, sighing as he pulls away from you.Â
âAlways am.â He says, and then heâs out the door, on his way to Strawberry for goddamn Micah. It gets under your skin that Dutch is sending him, but you know better than to openly question his decisions.Â
After the door clicks shut, you take your time getting ready. You put the same clothes on from the previous day, and despite a few wrinkles, theyâre good as new. You grab your satchel, gunbelt, and hat, putting yourself together before checking once more over the room and heading out. The stairs creak under your feet as you walk down into the check in area, finding that the familiar hotel clerk is waiting behind the desk.Â
âGood morninâ miss, I hope youâll stay again!â He greets, and you chuckle. Just yesterday he was begging you not to beat anyone to death in his hotel, now heâs asking for you to come back.Â
âSure will!â You lie, knowing that youâll be moving soon, hopefully. Youâd like to come back, last night was definitely one of the best in your life, thanks to Arthur and the All Saints Hotel, a deceiving name, you think.Â
It's warmer than usual when you open the door, and the sun shines down from between the clouds, casting the town in a mix of light and shadows. You stay on the sidewalk, smiling softly at the people you walk past on the way to the gunsmithâs.Â
Itâs nostalgic, going into the gunsmithâs shop. It reminds you of your father, and when you open the door, the smell of freshly polished oak and gun oil mix together, bringing back memories from years ago.
âAh, your guns are ready, miss!â The smith greets when he hears the bell on the door knob jingle. You step towards the counter, waiting as he puts both pointer fingers in the air before dipping behind an open door into the backroom.Â
âWilliam did fine work with these, miss! I think youâll be impressed. Heâs damn quick too, theyâre ready for ya.â The man yells from behind the wall, and you tap your fingers on the counter in anticipation. After a few moments, he steps around the corner. He places your carbine and revolver down on the counter carefully, and you nearly gasp in awe.Â
Firstly, the sight of them together, clean, with improved sights, stocks, and barrels is something to admire. They look like a proper set, and you canât wait to see what theyâll look like on your hip and shoulder.Â
Your attention goes to your carbine first, and the dark leather stock wrap that beautifully contrasts the silver-colored gun. Stars, large and small, connected by thin dotted lines pattern your gun, engraved into the barrel.
âWow.â You exhale, tracing your hand over the constellations. The gunsmith smiles, eyes crinkling in the corners.Â
Then you flicker your eyes to your revolver, and your jaw nearly drops. The same constellations pattern the gun, but on the grip is a howling wolf, head thrown back in a howl amongst the stars. Itâs perfect. You clear your throat, realizing youâve been gawking and stuck in your head.Â
âSorry- itâs just that theyâre so beautifulâŚâ You say, blushing before reaching into your satchel, âHow much do I owe you?â You ask, grabbing a wad of cash out. The gunsmith shakes his head, placing his hand up to stop you.Â
âThese have already been paid for, youâre good to go, miss.â
Your eyebrows pull together in confusion, and the gunsmith speaks up to clarify.Â
âThe feller you came in with yesterday, he stopped by aboutâŚâ He glances at the clock on the wall, âtwenty minutes ago and paid in full.â
Your confused look falls into a huff, and you chew on your cheek,Â
âCourse he did.â You smile. Youâll get Arthur back for this. He does not need to spend any more money on you, let alone something this expensive.Â
âLooks like itâs your lucky day.â The gunsmith says as you holster your revolver and swing your carbine strap over your shoulder.Â
âSure seems to be. Thank you, mister.â You say, turning back towards the door.
He waves as you exit the store, walking back down the street to grab Athena from the hitching post.
â â â â
Itâs fairly quiet when you get back to camp, as most of the boys are out working. Charles is out hunting bison, and Javier found some abandoned house up north filled with hillbillies and gold. Arthur has gone to get Micah, and most of the other boys are out on odd jobs and the like.Â
You hop down from Athena in search of a task to keep yourself busy. Your stomach was flipping the whole ride home, thinking about Micah coming back to camp. Itâs been peaceful without him, and you know that as soon as he returns, heâll break the little balance that the camp has been keeping.Â
You walk to the campfire, finding a seat on a wolf pelt covered log. Itâs plush under you, but nowhere near as soft as the hotelâs bed, and you blush, getting caught up in memories. Hosea sits opposite of you on a wooden folding chair. Heâs grinding some herbs together with a mortar and pestle, making a health tonic for his cough, youâre sure.
You blink, startled back to the present as Jack runs past you, giggling loudly with two horseshoes in hand. With a smile, your eyes follow him to where Kieran has hammered a piece of rebar into the ground for the young boy to play horseshoes. You chuckle, eyes returning in front of you. Hosea looks up, eyeing you over quickly.Â
âWhere have you been, dear girl? Iâve missed you in camp.â Hosea says, leaning down to add some water to his mortar.Â
âValentine.â You answer, avoiding some of the details. Hosea smirks, eyes stuck on his hands as he works the herbs down.
âAnd Arthur?â Hosea asks, arching an eyebrow as he focuses. You can see where this is going, and you know Hosea wonât take to any lies, so you donât even bother.
âHeâs in Strawberry, left this morning to get Micah out of jail.â You explain to him. Hosea nods, and he hums as if questioning you.Â
âWhat?â You huff, knowing that he has something to say, some odd cents to throw in. Hosea chuckles at your tone, shaking his head.Â
âNothing at all, just observing⌠Neither of you came back last night.â He points out with a knowing look. Heâs not chastising or judging you, solely pointing out something heâs noticed. Of course heâs noticed, if anyone were to figure it out, itâd be Hosea.
âCâmon Hosea⌠leave it be.â You say, voice hushed as to not reach the ears of any lurking gang members.Â
âOh, Iâm only pickinâ. But you know I notice these things.â He says, and you nod. He always notices the little things. Your eyes flicker up to the older man, the softness in his eyes. In the time youâve been with the gang, heâs treated you with nothing but kindness and respect. Heâs treated you like a daughter in a way, and you know you can trust him with conversations like these ones.Â
âItâs just⌠after the train, when I thought he was gone, it opened my eyes.â You admit to Hosea, head in your hands. He looks at you with a sparkle in his eyes, a word on his lips.Â
âThe pair of you are a lot like Bessie and I.â Hosea smiles, and you glance up to him.Â
âYou love him.â Hosea states plainly, âItâs clear as day on your face, that worrying after him, that longing. You love him.â
âIâ Itâs only been-â You begin, but Hosea doesnât let you stumble out of this one, instead, he speaks up again.Â
âI'm happy for you two, really, I am. That boy hasnât had someone takinâ care of him in many a year, I reckon. I reckon you havenât either.â Hoea says, and you put your head in your hands.Â
âIs it really all that obvious?â You ask.Â
âTo an old soul like me? Yes.â Hosea smiles, groaning as he stands up from his seat at the fire. He leaves his mortar and pestle on the ground, coming around the campfire to walk towards you.Â
âMy lips are sealed, dear girl. Now go on, John was looking for you. Thereâs work to be done if weâre gonna get out of here before the law catches our tails.âÂ
âThanks, Hosea.â You offer as he pats your shoulder lightly.
He sits back down on his chair, taking in the campâs state before watching you stand up. John is sharpening his knife at the table sometimes used for poker, and you walk towards him with your hands resting on your gun belt, hoping that this job will go better than your last two.
âYou were lookinâ for me?â You ask, pulling one of the chairs out and sitting down across from John.Â
âYeah you and Arthur. Donât sit down, weâre goinâ out.â John says, standing up as he sheathes his knife. You can hear the metallic clink of Jackâs horseshoes hitting their pole, alongside Swansonâs drunken rambling as you push the chair back in.Â
âArthurâs breakinâ Micah out of jail right now, do you think the two of us can handle it? Whatever it is that weâre doinâ.â You say, sighing as you follow John towards the hitching posts.Â
âSure we can handle it, weâre only stealinâ sheep.â John chuckles, and you jog after him, confused.Â
âSheep? I donât know about you, but Iâm no rancher, John.â You huff, looking at your thoroughbred. Sheâs not bred to work livestock, and even if she was, you havenât a clue on how to.Â
âIt canât be that hard. Wait, shit- we need a rifle with good sights, do you have one?â John asks, and you stop in your tracks, sighing.Â
âNo I donât have oneâ Are you sure you have this job planned out right?â You question him, drawing your eyebrows together with some attitude.
âYes Iâm sure, now grab one from Arthurâs weaponâs box. He wonât mind.â
âHe definitely will, but Iâll make sure he knows this was your idea.â You bite, stomping off towards Arthurâs wagon. Another job with John, another underprepared mission thatâll likely get someone hurt.Â
You sigh, going to Arthurâs wagon. You kneel on the ground in front of his weapons box, opening the creaky, rusted lid. Your eyes flicker down to the box, and you sift through it, searching for his rifle. You find the rolling block rifle easily enough before meeting John back over by the horses. Heâs already mounted up, waiting for you to get on Athena.Â
â- â- â-- â
"Come on then, where are we getting these damn sheep?" You ask, mounting up. John canters out of Horseshoe as you follow.Â
"Should be comin' through the Heartlands sometime in the hour, probably led by a couple of ranch hands. I reckon we get those ranch hands dealt with and we have the herd for ourselves." John explains, racing over the train tracks toward the rocky Heartlands. You ride on for a while, galloping past herds of bison and deer.Â
"What happened with Arthur by the way? It's like he came back and then left again. I barely saw him before he ran off." John yells back to you, and you stumble for an answer.Â
"Well, he hid out in Strawberry till the law got away and then made his way back to the bridge. I guess there were a lot of eyes on him when we came back home, so he went to Valentine."Â
"I thought he was dead." John admits, "Did you go with him? To Valentine? I didn't see you in camp eitherâŚ" John recalls.Â
"I did." Is all you say, leaving the conversation at that as you canter up the path to the top of a cliff. It's a rocky trail, but eventually you make it to the top. You can look down over and see for miles in both directions.Â
"They'll be comin' from Emerald Ranch." John explains, pulling a pair of binoculars out. He looks through them towards the east, waiting for some movement. After a few minutes of him watching, and you toying with your hands, he speaks up.Â
"I see somethin', might be them." John whispers, crouching down. You follow suit, kneeling on the rocks as you pull Arthur's rolling block rifle from around your shoulder. You hold up the heavy gun, glancing through the sight.Â
You see three men on horses, and about thirty head of sheep in between them.Â
"That's them, alright." You whisper back, lowering the barrel of the gun.Â
"What's the plan?" You ask, looking over to John as he lowers his binoculars.Â
"Wait until they get close, then shoot at their feet. Close enough to scare 'em, but don't actually shoot anyone."Â
"I'm not gonna shoot anyone." You bite, lifting the sight back up to your eye. You center the rifle against your shoulder, aiming it towards the herd. You zero in on a spot between the rancherâs, but you hesitate, looking back at John.Â
âWonât this scare the sheep away?â You ask. John waves you off, pointing back to the herd.Â
âNoâ you're just overthinkinâ it. Theyâre gettinâ close now, shoot at âem.â John tells you, and you cock your head, going back to your sights.Â
âIf you say soâŚâ You hum, and John rolls his eyes.Â
You aim back at the ranchersâ feet, squeezing the trigger. The chamber fires, and the bullet lodges into the dirt between the three men. Their horses spook, rearing up and growing skittish, but they keep the herd tight together, not budging.Â
âOne more shot, make it closer this time.â John says, looking back through his binoculars.Â
You aim again, closer this time. Your hands sweat from anxiety and the weight of the gun, and when your trembling fingers squeeze the trigger, you slip just a hair. The bullet lodges into one of the rancherâs shoulders, and you wince as he screams, falling from his horse.Â
âShit, Star!â John hisses, âI told you not to hit anyone!âÂ
âClearly, that was an accident- shit.â You wince. Luckily he seems to be okay, save for the wound, and he clambers back up onto his horse before galloping off with the other two.Â
âOops.â You whisper.
John rolls his eyes, running towards the horses. With the gunshot, and the absence of the ranchers, the sheep have scattered, running in opposite directions and bleating loudly in fear. You follow, quickly running towards Athena to catch up to John. You jump onto Athena from behind, and she starts running before youâve even scooched up into the saddle.Â
âYou get the east side, Iâll grab the west, get as many back as you can!â John hollers to you, running after the sheep that have run off towards the west. You run towards Emerald Ranch, gathering up as many as you can and pushing them in the direction of Valentine. You have no idea how to herd, but you try your best, shielding them from the wrong way, while encouraging them towards Valentine. Itâs a mess, and you barely get them together before taking up the side of the herd opposite of John.Â
âWe got 'em all?â You holler over, and John shrugs. Â
âI don't know, but we got enough.âHe yells back. You trot forward, slapping your saddle every once in a while to encourage the sheep forward. It's a messy group, but it works as you push them on.
â â â â
"What in the hell are you two doin'?" A familiar voice calls out, and you glance up to meet Arthur's green eyes. He's trotting towards you on his scarred shire, eyes darting around at the herd of sheep you're barely keeping together.Â
"Stealin' sheep!" John hollers over the noise as the animals run amongst themselves, bleating, âStar over here is shootinâ farmers.â John jokes, and you sigh.Â
âI told you that was an accident, and I feel real bad for it, so leave it be.â You say. John chuckles, and Arthur raises an eyebrow at you, but you wave it off.Â
Seeing the mess of a herd, Arthur flanks the sheep, leaving you pushing them from the back, and John on their other side. It forms a perfect chute to push them along, and you fall into a steady trot, pushing the sheep forward.
"Those guns turned out real fine!" Arthur yells back to you, and you nod, glancing down at your hip.Â
"They did, thank you by the way. You didn't have to do that." You yell up, referring to him buying your guns.Â
"Ah, I wanted to." Arthur says. John glances between the two of you with a confused look on his face, but keeps quiet other than an occasional cluck or curse at the sheep.Â
"How'd it go with Micah?" You ask Arthur, and you see him shake his head. One of the sheep breaks away from the herd, and you canter to the side, cutting it off and forcing it back as Arthur speaks.Â
"It was a goddamn disaster. He killed half the town lookin' for a pair of guns, killed a woman he knew, it was real bad." Arthur grits, distaste on his tongue as he spits the words out.
"He go back to camp?" John asks, spurring Old Boy forward, keeping the herd in tight formation as you trot around Citadel Rock.Â
"No," Arthur shakes his head, scratching his chin, "He wants to make it up Dutch. He said bringin' home a take would get him forgiven, asked me if I had any leads or jobs." Arthur huffs.Â
Your blood runs cold for a moment. You think of the debtor Arthur was supposed to go after yesterday, and you hope he didn't send Micah.Â
"Where did you send him?" You ask, voice steady. Arthur doesn't respond, and the only noise is the pounding of hooves as your eyebrows pop up, waiting for an answer.Â
"Where did you send him?" You bite, louder and more aggressively this time. John is lost, looking between the two of you.Â
"I sent him after Downes."Â
You huff, shocked, though you shouldn't be. Athena tosses her head up a few times, picking up on the fact that you're upset.Â
"So it's okay to beat a man as long as your hands are clean?" You snap, "Sending goddamn Micah after him. Do you think that makes it okayâ? You're not giving the beating, but you can pass it off on someone else and walk away with a clean conscience?"Â
John whistles under his breath, keeping his eyes on the sheep and the trail ahead. Meanwhile, Arthur scoffs, as if you're being outrageous.
"I didn't go after Downes, but I canât stop Micah from goin'." He defends, and you squint at his poor excuse, growing more upset and angry. It's one thing to take from people who deserve it, but the poor? It takes a different type of person to rob and beat the desperate. Only someone with no honor could do that, and looking at Arthur, you wonder where his head's at when it comes to morality.Â
"Maybe not, but you told him to go!" You yell over the bleating sheep. They grow more antsy from you and Arthur's yelling, and everyone works harder to keep them in tight formation.Â
"Strauss would have just sent one of the other boys anyway! Micah needed work and I gave him some. I'm sorry we don't always have the benefit of pickin' and choosin' what jobs we go on. We need money to get out of this damn place, you should know! You're itchin' to get out of here more than anyone- so no, I didn't question it!" Arthur yells, his face is hot with anger, and as much as your mind barks at you to scream back, you can't find it in your heart to yell at him.Â
"Strauss's line of 'work' hurts more than just the debtor. I should know." You say, quieter than you were yelling just seconds ago. Arthur turns in his saddle, sees the tears in your eyes and realizes what a piece of shit he's being. He wonders if he's any different than the bastard who killed your father, and if you see him that way.Â
"You ought to figure out who you wanna be, Arthur, a good man or a bad one, cause you can't be both⌠Good luck with the sheep." You bid goodbye, reining Athena away from the herd.Â
"Star, wait." Arthur says as you kiss to Athena, cueing her into a canter past the sheep and the boys, towards Valentine.Â
"Star!" Arthur yells after you, but his voice gets quieter as you keep running towards Valentine. A few tears drip down your cheeks, but you wipe them away quickly. You've had a lot of reminders of your family today, and Arthur sending Micah after a debtor sure didn't help.Â
You don't even have to steer her, Athena rides you right into Valentine, straight to Keane's saloon, as if she knows you need it. When you pull alongside the hitching post, you spot a pearly white Arabian hitched across the road and you scowl. Great.Â
Your need for a drink outgrows your annoyance with Dutch, and you slide down from Athena before walking up to the saloon door. With a hand on either door, you push them open.
Your eyes immediately land on Dutch, and sitting beside him is that little rat, Strauss. Your frown deepens, of course he's here. His beady eyes scan the room, and land on you as you walk forward. The scowl you send him is heated, and he immediately averts his eyes.Â
"Star, we were looking for you. Where's John?" Dutch yells out, his booming voice tugging at the scowl on your lips.Â
"With Arthur, working." You offer.Â
"Come sit, have a drink with us, miss." Dutch smiles, inviting you over. You glance at the bar, then to the square table that they're sitting at. There's an expensive bottle of whiskey on the table, and you decide it's worth the pain of sitting by the bastards. You nod, walking towards their table before pulling a chair out and sitting down.Â
Dutch waves the bartender over, calling him to bring you a glass. As soon as the crystal glass hits the table, you're pouring the golden liquid into it. Dutch chuckles, watching as you take a long swig.
"I just wanted toâ" Strauss begins to speak, but you glare at him.Â
"Shut the hell up." You snap at him, and immediately he goes quiet.Â
Dutch on the other hand, laughs boisterously. His hand rests on his manspreading knee as he tips his chair back on its back legs.Â
"Feisty thing, isn't she?" Dutch chuckles, and you squint at him dangerously. He places his hands in the air in surrender as you down the rest of your whiskey and pour yourself another one.Â
"What job are Arthur and John running? I told them to meet me hereâŚ" Dutch asks, swirling his glass.Â
"Stealin' sheep and sendin' them to auction. I'm sure they'll be here any minute." You say with a hint of distaste on your lips. You drink your glass of whiskey in one long swig before placing the glass back down gently.Â
"I better be heading out, have some debtors to attend to." Strauss smiles, but neither you or Dutch smile back as the man stands up and leaves.Â
"I never liked that man's line of work. It seems⌠worse, stealing from the poor like that." Dutch grumbles, shaking his head. You look over at him surprised.Â
"Something we agree on." You huff. You drink the last of your whiskey, pouring another. You watch as Dutch gets lost in his head, and he smiles at some old memory.Â
"You know, Arthur, Hosea and I used to steal from the rich and give to the poor⌠Our first bank robbery, we handed gold and cash out in the slums, gave it all except what we needed." Dutch says, and you lean back in your chair, seeing him in a new light.Â
"Hosea thinks we've changed, but we're still chasin' that same dreamâ freedom from the confines of civilization, paradise in the west." He says, eyes far away as he imagines a future for the gang. You bring your glass up to your lips, thinking over his words.Â
"Is that where we're headed then? West?" You ask, and Dutch nods deeply.Â
"That's the plan."Â
You drink your whiskey before placing your glass down, not knowing if it's your second or third. The old bottle is halfway gone though.Â
"Here they come." Dutch smiles, and you turn to see Arthur and John trotting down the road, wearing matching scowls. You can see Arthur bickering with the younger outlaw, in a sour mood.Â
"I'm gonna step out for a smoke." You tell Dutch, sliding your chair out as you stand. He tips his hat as you walk out the back door.Â
You don't want to say anything you'll regret, so stepping out proves to be your safest option. You lean your back against the outer wall of the saloon, reaching into your satchel to grab your box of cigarettes. You pull one out, striking a match against your boot to light it. Pulling the match to the cigarette between your lips, you watch as it begins to burn, orange and black ashes falling from your smoke when you tap it.Â
You inhale deeply, slipping your eyes shut as the tobacco works its way into your system. You feel a little better already, and you take a few steps forward, looking up at the cliffs above you. You watch on for a while, hearing Arthur and John bickering on the other side of the building, and then you hear a shuffle behind you. With your eyebrows pulled together, you start to turn. A rifle hits the back of your head, and a dull pain shoots through your head as you blackout, falling to the floor.Â
 â â â â
Your eyes begin to flicker open, and you squint as the bright white daylight blinds you. Your head throbs, and the arms holding you up are gripping onto you too tightly. Muffled voices are yelling, but you can't make out what they're saying until you finally come to.Â
"Get up, we're walkin." A man grits at you, and when your eyes adjust to the light, you're met with a Pinkerton Agent. Your eyes pop open widely, and you go to yell, but there's a gag wrapped tightly in your mouth, tied behind your head.Â
You panic, thinking they're going to torture you for information. If they wanted to kill you they would have already. You try to grab for your holster, but your hands are tied behind your back, and your guns have been stripped from you. The Agent smirks as it all dawns on you, and he grabs your arm, pulling you with him.Â
"Move." He bites, pushing you forward. You stumble ahead, breathing hotly through your gag, struggling as he pushes you into the street. Two big, armed men grab onto your arms, holding you tightly. The barrel of a rifle presses up against your temple as you tremble, assessing the situation. Keane's saloon is in front of you, and you can faintly see the silhouette of Arthur and Dutch drinking inside. When you glance to your side, you see that they have Strauss with you, but he is trembling and tears slip down his cheeks. You have no weapons, your hands are literally bound, your best option is to wait.Â
A large man comes forward with a thick white beard. He's neatly dressed and neatly trimmed, clearly a man of money. He has a shining revolver in his hand, pointed up in the air.Â
"Van der Linde!" The man screams, voice booming as he roars, pacing up and down the street in front of you. You glance around, seeing that Pinkerton Agents surround the building and the shops in the town. Your breathing quickens as you glance back to the window.Â
"Get out here! Get out here now!" The man yells again, growing irritated and impatient.Â
"You don't know me, but you keep robbing me!" He screams, and all his men ready their guns at the saloon door. Your heart pounds in your chest. You're outnumbered by a lot.Â
"My name is Leviticus Cornwall, I am not a man to be messed with by the likes of you!" Cornwall screams, and your blood runs cold at the name. The wagon, the train, you've been stealing from Cornwall all this time, of course he was bound to retaliate. You watch as the silhouettes behind the windows move, and you know they must be coming up with a plan.Â
"Get out here! Before I kill them both!" Cornwall screams, and the man at your back shoves you down hard until your knees hit the mud. You yelp in pain from his shove, and the barrel of his rifle pushes hard against the back of your head for it.Â
The saloon door opens, and slowly Dutch, Arthur and John file out with their hands raised. Dutch stands in the middle of the porch, John and Arthur flanking him. Arthur's eyes are glued to you, and his heart pounds as he worriedly scans over you. The sight of you on your knees with a gun to your head is surely burned into his memory.Â
"Gentleman, this is a terrible case of mistaken identityâŚWhat is worse than admonishing a man for the sins of another?" Dutch begins, and you nervously watch as Arthur waits for an opportune moment.Â
"Now, I don't know who this 'van der Linde' is, but surely we can negotiateâ"Â
Arthur unholsters his revolver and takes out the man at your back in a quick movement. All hell breaks loose, and Arthur finds cover as the three boys start shooting. Cornwall mounts up and runs off quickly, ducking like a coward as he gallops off. Strauss lands a bullet in the leg, and screams out in pain. You duck, running behind a wagon to seek cover as bullets whiz past your head.Â
"I gotta go help Star!" Arthur yells, firing multiple times before darting across the street towards you. When he comes around the corner, he skids to his knees in the mud, holstering his gun. His hands pry the gag out of your mouth and you cough, taking a deep breath upon its release.Â
He pulls out his knife, reaching behind you to free your hands as you gasp.Â
"Y'alright?" Arthur yells over the bullets, and you nod.Â
"I'm sorry-" he begins.Â
"We'll talk later, we're getting shot at." You yell, running towards the corpse of the man who was holding you hostage. You take your guns off him, and immediately jump in to help.Â
"There's more comin' in!" John yells firing into three men in quick succession. You glance at the road from the post office to see a group of men riding in on fine, bay Morgans. Your heart rate picks up as you and Arthur aim and fire, taking down all the men with your smoking carbines.Â
"Dutch?! What are we doin' here?" Arthur yells out, jogging up the road towards the jail, you follow him, shooting down men that peak around the gunsmith's.
"We'll get Strauss in the wagon and push it. Arthur, shoot somethin! Star, get in the wagon with Strauss, you can use it as cover!" Dutch yells, and you run and jump into the wagon. You duck behind the wall of the wagon, peeking up enough to fire at the Pinkertons lining the street. Arthur cuts Strauss free, picks him up and tosses him in the horseless wagon. He cries out in pain, gripping his leg tightly.
"I think something is wrong, I believe I severed an artery or- or nicked a nerveâ" Strauss begins.Â
"Shut up before I put another bullet in you. You're fine." You yell. The wagon starts moving, and you glance back to see Dutch and John pushing it.Â
Arthur is using the wagon as cover, running beside it, while shooting men down from the balconies.Â
Bullets lodge into the wagon, and you gasp loudly as one hits the wood just centimeters from you. You turn around to see a man fall from the balcony behind you, dead on account of Arthur's smoking revolver. He looks over at you, terrified, until he realizes it missed you.Â
You nod to him, letting him know you're fine, before taking your position back and firing into as many men as you can. They pop out from everywhere, with seemingly no end to their numbers. Pinkertons come from around the jail, the doctor's, the saloon, gunsmith, everywhere. They're on roofs, balconies and porches, shooting out of damn windows. Cornwall has hired a goddamn militia.Â
Dutch and John are pushing the wagon down the main street, past the saloon as you near the end of the road.Â
"There's not many left, just keep shooting!" Dutch yells out, straining as he pushes the wagon. You and Arthur continue firing, and you stop momentarily to reload.Â
"I'm low on ammo!" You holler, ducking behind the wall of the wagon as you reload your gun. Once the bullets are loaded, you cock the gun to resume your shooting. When you pop up from your cover, bullets whiz past you. You take down one man from the roof of the stables, and another from the porch of Nils' shop.Â
The Pinkertons begin to dwindle down, until Dutch and John push the wagon to the end of the main road, and there are no more.Â
"Is everyone alive?!" Dutch hollers out, turning around to count everyone.Â
"There could be more comin' we gotta go now." You say, swinging your carbine over your shoulder as you jump down from the wagon. You jog over towards Arthur, noticing a red stain on the arm of his shirt. He sees your eyes flicker to the blood, and you grab his bicep to get a better look at it.
"Just a graze, I'm fine." Arthur reassures you, hand squeezing your elbow lightly as you nod.
Dutch grabs a whining Strauss from the wagon, whistling as the horses come running down the street.
"John, take Strauss on your horse. I'll get Grimshaw to start packing up. You two, make sure they don't follow us." Dutch orders, setting Strauss up on the back of Old Boy.Â
"Sure." Arthur answers.Â
"We can't stay here after this." Dutch admits out loud, mounting up on The Count who rears and bucks lightly in fear.
"No, we can't." Arthur sighs.Â
John mounts up onto Old Boy, and they all run off towards home. You stand next to Arthur in shock, glancing over the bodies that line the streets.Â
"You're okay?" Arthur asks, coming towards you. You nod, eyes slipping closed.Â
"This was a massacre, Arthur. He hired a militia." You whisper, "And he'll hire another one."
Arthur nods, hands on his gun belt.Â
"We'll be okay, and we'll talk about earlier, let's just get home first. Cmon, no one's followin' us." Arthur says, whistling for your horses to come closer. You mount up on Athena, glancing once more over the town. The main street is littered with corpses, destroying the sweet little livestock town. You frown deeply, pushing Athena towards home.Â
Upon your arrival, tents are already being torn down and stuffed into wagons. Your tent is gone, and Arthur's wagon is being taken apart and filled with items. You frown at the sight of your home being destroyed, again.Â
Arthur jumps down from Balius and walks straight up to Dutch's tent with you in toe. Hosea is in the tent, bickering and finger-pointing at Dutch while you wait outside.Â
"This is lying low? We've turned into a bunch of killers, Dutch, I mean it! We ain't even got the delusion of being nothing but a bunch of killers!" Hosea snaps, pointing his finger in Dutch's face. Dutch sits on his cot, calm as ever as he takes in Hosea's words.Â
"We are just trying to survive, Hosea. We don't have a choice. This will end soon." Dutch reassures.Â
"Damn right, it will!" Hosea yells before backing away and stomping out of the tent.Â
"Constipated as usualâŚ" Dutch hums, shaking his head as Arthur steps inside.Â
"Where are we headed, Dutch?" Arthur asks, voice quiet, worried.Â
"Micah told me of a place, a while back before we came down here. Dewberry Creek."Â
Your eyebrows draw together as you look at Dutch, shaking your head.Â
"I've been there with John, it ain't gonna work. It's open and it'll be mud when it rains." You explain, thinking back to when you stole the wagon with John.Â
"I trust Micah. It will work. Arthur, take Charles and scout it out." Dutch growls at you. You glare at him, stepping forward.Â
"It ain't gonna w-"
"I said you and Charles go take a look. Clear off anyone you find before the whole lot of us move in there looking so conspicuous." Dutch interrupts you as you fume.Â
"And how are we gonna do that?" Arthur sighs. Dutch shakes his head.Â
"I don't know, start dancin'?"Â
Arthur looks at Dutch with as much anger as you. He's being sent on errands, when you know it's a waste of time.Â
"What am I now, just your goddamn errand boy?" Arthur hisses, stepping out of the tent with you. His hand is on the small of your back as he urges you outside, away from Dutch and the mess he's creating.Â
"You're not my errand boy, you are my son. You worry because I worry, we are just the same, you and I." Dutch says, and Arthur walks away from him with a scowl.Â
"I swear, he's turnin' into a goddamn lunatic, Star." Arthur whispers hotly, stomping towards Charles' bedroll.
"I know it." You sigh, following Arthur. When you glance over your shoulder you see Abigail sitting on the ground with Jack, tears streaming down his cheeks as Karen and Tilly pack up his bags. You frown, watching on as they take his books and file them away in a chest.Â
"But he'll pull through for us. He always does." Arthur adds, and you nod, not saying anything. You don't have to tell Arthur that you disagree.Â
Charles is rolling up his bedroll, and adding it to a bag of his things when you both come upon him.Â
"Charles, ride with us?" Arthur asks, and Charles stands up, eyebrows pulled together.Â
"Of course. Where to?" He asks, grabbing his shotgun from a crate before following you towards the horses.Â
"Some dried up river that ain't gonna work as a camp." You bite, aggression not pointed at either of the two boys.Â
"She's talkin' about Dewberry Creek." Arthur corrects you with a smirk.Â
It's a longer ride, and by the end you're exhausted. It's been a shit day so far, and this part is no exception. Your body aches from rocking in the saddle, and from the hyperextension of your hands being tied behind your back, not to mention your throbbing head from the butt of a rifle earlier.
"Y'okay?" Arthur asks, seeing you stretch your shoulders and crack your neck for the third time in the past ten minutes.Â
"Yeah, just hurtin' a little." You admit. Dewberry Creek is just over the hill, and you all lope over it.Â
"They hurt you bad?" Arthur asks, suddenly worried. He didn't have time to check over you back after the shootout, he was too worried about getting you out of there. And then immediately getting swooped into a job, he never asked.Â
"I'm okay." You admit, reaching over to squeeze Arthurâs hand. He nods, squeezing yours back lightly before you let go and continue riding.Â
Charles curiously eyes the motion, making his own assumptions, but he keeps quiet.Â
"Creekâs just up here." You call out, pushing Athena a little faster down the hill. Arthur and Charles follow as you come upon the dried up creek bed You slow Athena into a sliding stop, letting the boys take in the spot for what it's worth.
The creek bed is muddy. There are sinking wet spots that make it unlivable, not to mention the fact that it's in the middle of the plains, completely in the open. There are a few tents pitched in the creekbed, a hundred or more feet down.Â
âThis is worse than I thought⌠Why would Micah even consider this?â Charles asks. Arthur pushes Balius forward into the creek bed, seemingly eyeing the same tents as you.Â
âAre there people living here now?â Arthur asks, riding forward. You follow him, squinting to look for any motion down by the tents. You see none, but ride forward anyway.Â
âIt looks abandoned.â You say, trotting past Arthur. You scan the creekbed, stopping when you see an unmoving lump of fabric in the distance. As you get closer, you wince, realizing itâs a corpse, face down in the mud. It appears that he was shot in the back while running away. You look back up at the tents, a feeling of unease sweeping over you.Â
âI found a body!â You yell back to the boys, and both of them ride up to you, âThereâs a camp ahead too.â You add, getting down from Athena. You move towards the body, feeling sorry for the feller as you look him over.
âStay alert. Any issues, shoot first nâ debate second.â Arthur says, and you huff a humorless laugh.Â
âWhat is with you today?â You hiss, and Charles nods his head, also picking up on Arthurâs sour mood and aggression.Â
âI'm not gonna shoot for the sake of it.â Charles bites back, following Arthur towards the camp.
âSurvivals for the sake of it, quit talkin.â Arthur snaps, and you roll your eyes, glancing at Charles.Â
You come upon the camp, hand resting near your holster as you check it out. You walk through the entrance of a white, A frame tent, finding it to be left untouched. Cans of food sit out, blankets and books are left behind. It's as if whoever was here just got up and left. Arthur and Charles search the tents up ahead, finding the same thing.Â
âLooks empty.â Arthur calls out, and you jog up to where heâs at. The only thing left to search is a large wagon, and you set your eyes on it as you walk past the men.Â
âLet's make sure.â You say, walking towards the wagon. You peek in the back, finding an opened, empty chest. When you step down, you hear the cock of a shotgun, and you pause, putting your hands in the air.Â
Arthur and Charles notice this, and they step forward slowly, pulling a few crates away from under the wagon. Youâre taken aback at the sight of a woman and two children, cowering, under the wagon. The mother holds up a shotgun, shielding her son and daughter behind her.
âYou can come out of there.â Charles says, holstering his sawed off shotgun as he backs away with his hands raised. You and Arthur follow, surrendering as you give them space to step out.Â
âAre you okay?â You ask, shocked at the sight of them. They look terrified, and Charles gestures for them to come out from underneath the wagon.Â
âWe donât mean you no harm.â Arthur whispers.Â
The woman comes out, with her gun raised up at you three, alternating between you all. Her children follow her, and she keeps them behind her skirt as she stands across from you three.Â
âThe lady said, are you okay?â Arthur says, gesturing to you. The woman shakes her head as if she doesnât understand.Â
âSprechen sie Deutsch? G-German?â She asks, translating her words as best as she can. Arthur sighs, tossing his hands up into the air.Â
âNo.â He says curtly. Much to your surprise, he attempts to shoo them off with his hands as he yells, âNow go on, get outta here! We need the land, go!â He yells, and you step in front of him, stopping him.Â
âYouâre gonna leave these people to themselves after this?â You ask, gesturing to the body and abandoned camp. Arthur has a grumpy look on his face, a threatening demeanor that works on just about everyone but you.Â
âWe need this land, Starâ we got our own probââ Arthur begins, but the womanâs young daughter jumps out from behind her, tears in her eyes as she yells in the best English she can.Â
âThey took our father!!â She yells, crying. Her accent is heavy, but you understand her well enough. Charles steps forward, and the mother raises her gun up again.Â
âWho did?â Charles asks, and Arthur shakes his head in disapproval.Â
âMen, last night.â The girl adds, watching the three of you.Â
âWhere?â You ask, but Arthur grabs your arm, pulling you back to look at him. Angrily, you pull your arm back.Â
âAinât no business of ours. I donât even speak their language!â Arthur hisses. Charles steps forward, a mean look on his face.Â
âYou ain't as tough and dense as all that. Come on, Star.â Charles says, and you sigh before following him.Â
âArthur, stay or donât, but Iâm goin.â You say, whistling for Athena. You mount up quickly, following the direction that the young girl had pointed to.Â
âWeâll see if we can pick up a trail, câmon.â Charles says, and Arthur sighs before mounting onto Balius.
Charles starts out the mouth of the trail, picking up a canter. Before he gets to the main road, he points to the ground.Â
âA trail, right here.â Charles says, cueing Taima faster.Â
âI don't see nothinâ.â Arthur pouts, looking at the dirt and seeing⌠nothing but dirt. You point to the hoof prints on the ground, and the trail that they make along the main road.Â
âHoof prints this way.â You explain, racing faster along the road. The trail dips into the woods, and you follow Charles in a single file line, racing through the trees.Â
âSo what's goinâ on with you?â Charles asks, glancing back at Arthur. He keeps a steady pace with Taima, dodging turkeys and trees as he follows the tracks,Â
âWhatchu mean?â Arthur asks.
âYou were just gonna send that woman and her children on their way?â Charles asks. Arthur slings his carbine off of his shoulder, sliding it down the holster on Baliusâs saddle.Â
âWeâre wanted men. We got the Pinkertons breathing down our necks. Star was nearly executed in front of us today, Charles... We should be moving camp, not runninâ off on some wild goose chase.â Arthur explains, and you pick up on the reason for his upset.Â
âThat's why youâre upset. Arthur, I'm okay.â You offer, but it doesnât ease his worry. He wonât feel better until youâre far away from this mess.Â
âMaybe now, but that Pinkerton was seconds away from putting a bullet in you, and donât think I didn't see that goddamn mark on your head.â Arthur hisses, and you instinctively run your hand up to the back of your head where a welt resides from the butt of that bastardâs carbine. It grows quiet as Charles breaches the woods, coming upon Flat Iron Lake.Â
âThis way.â He says quietly, cantering along the shore. You follow, and after a while of running alongside horse tracks, you come to a grassy opening. It must be the right place, as crates and a few bedrolls lie around scattered. It's a beautiful spot, and the golden evening light shines brilliantly across the lake, cascading around you.Â
âThis is a better camp spot than back there.â You say, looking over the large, old oak tree in the center of the camp. The lake laps at the shore of the little peninsula, calmingly.Â
âThis looks like our feller.â Arthur hollers from ahead of you, and your head snaps in his direction to where a man is hogtied on the grass, yelling through a gag. Arthur jumps down from Balius, jogging over to the man. He slips the manâs gag off, and immediately the German man begins to scream.Â
âVorsichtig!! Vorsichtig!!âÂ
<careful! careful!> The man screams, and bullets begin to whiz around past you.
âTake cover!â Arthur yells, and you leap down from Athena, sliding behind a crate as the horses run off. Men come from behind the trees, shooting at you. You fill your carbine, popping up from the cover to fire into three menâs chests. There arenât many of them, and you take out as many as you can.Â
âWatch! Theyâre cominâ in on horses!â Charles yells from behind the tree, and you glance towards the trail leading in where four men on horses ride in.Â
You take down one, and Arthur and Charles take down the rest.Â
âAre there any more of them?â You pant, lowering your constellation-patterned weapon.Â
âNo.â Arthur mumbles, holstering his revolver.Â
You look behind you, past Arthur to the hogtied man. He's writhing on the ground, clearly in pain from being tied up so long. You jog over to him quickly, unsheathing your knife before cutting his ties free. Arthur and Charles whistle for your horses, walking towards you as the man clambers up, rubbing at his raw wrists.Â
"Danke! Danke!!"Â
<thank you! thank you!> The man smiles, turning around in both ways as if he's lost, searching for a familiar way out.Â
"We'll take you back to your family, mister." You say slowly, wondering if he understands any English at all.Â
"Starâ" Arthur begins to protest, but you're not having any of it. You won't let him protect you if it leads to others getting hurt.Â
"Charles, go back to Horseshoe and bring the caravan here. It's a good spot." You address Charles before turning to the man, "We will take you back to your family." You say, waving him towards your horse. He follows you, looking mighty confused as you mount up into Athena. But when you extend your hand to him, he takes it, hopping up into the mare's croup.Â
"Was tun wir jetzt"
<what are we doing now?> The man says, and not understanding, you keep on riding.Â
"Also komme ich dann mit?"Â
<so I'm coming with you then?> He asks again, and you sigh.Â
"I'm sorry, I have no clue what you're sayin', mister." You sigh, following the trail back towards Dewberry Creek.Â
"Wo bringst du hich min?"Â
<where are you taking me?>Â He asks again. You don't respond, but Arthur does.Â
"What in the hell did you do to those fellers back there?" Arthur asks, following beside you on his shire.Â
"Was hast du gesagt."
<what did you say?>Â
Arthur sighs, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose as he rides along.
"Those men back there. Why- did- they- take- you?" Arthur asks, pronouncing each word slower, as if it'll help the man understand.Â
"Geld. Money." The German husband says. You glance over your shoulder at him, wondering what trouble he's in over money with fellers like those. He's well dressed, and his family was too. You doubt he's a debtor.Â
"Meine Familie hat ein Goldminen Geschäft. Sie wollten ein LĂśsegeld schicken."Â
<my family owns a gold mining business. they wanted to send a ransom.> Â He explains, and you try to decipher the German words.Â
"How did someone even come up with them words?" Arthur sighs as you try to understand.
"G-gold minin'?" You attempt to say the word in German, "Your family owns a gold mine?" You say, glancing at Arthur with wide eyes.Â
"Ja, yes!" The German man exclaims, and your eyes boggle.Â
âIhr beide bringt mich zu meiner Familie? Oh danke. Wie haben sie euch beide gefunden?â
<youâre taking me to my family? oh, thank you. how did they find you two?>
âSorry partner, I can barely speak english.â Arthur huffs as you ride up on the Dewberry Creek bank. When you come over the hill, the manâs family is waiting for them. Theyâve readied their wagon, and two draft horses are tethered to the front of it.Â
âThere they are.â You whisper back to the man with a smile on your face as the children point and smile.Â
âOh, Gott sei Dank!â
<oh, thank god!> He calls out, jumping down from Athena. He runs to his family, and catches his wife in a tight hug as the children run and wrap their arms around him.Â
âSchatz!âÂ
<darling!> He exhales, releasing a held breath when he sees and feels his family.Â
âAndreas!â His wife cries, kissing his cheek.Â
âIch dachte du wärst tot.âÂ
<I thought you were dead.> She says, tears slipping down her cheeks.Â
âIch war es fast.â
<I nearly was.> Â Andreas admits before looking down and greeting his children. You watch on as Arthur dismounts, going towards the little reunited family.
âWir sind gesegnet, euch beide kennengelernt zu haben.âÂ
<we are blessed to have known you both.> The wife cries to you and Arthur as her husband helps her up into the wagon. Youâre not sure what sheâs said, but youâre sure itâs some form of gratitude.Â
Arthur steps forward, shooing the family on.Â
âGet outta here, this place ainât safe.â Arthur tells them, but no one moves.Â
âGet outta here! Vamos! Vamos!â Arthur yells, in a sad excuse for spanish while talking to german folks. You snort as the children clamber up into the wagon. The man points his fingers into the air as if he has an idea before digging through a compartment in his wagon.Â
âIch habe etwas fĂźr dich, Augenblick."Â
<i have something for you, one moment.> He says, digging through the wagon as Arthur huffs, impatient. You only watch on from Athena, amused by Arthurâs easily frustrated state. Andreas turns around, holding two heavy, shimmering bars of gold in his hands. Your eyes boggle as he hands one to Arthur, and then comes forward to offer the other up to you.
âDanke aus tiefstem herzenâ
<thank you from the bottom of my heart.> He whispers, glancing between you and Arthur.Â
Arthur stares at the gold bar for a moment before glancing back up at the man as he climbs into his wagon, slapping the reins over the horsesâ backs.Â
âGuess it was a pleasureâŚâ Arthur mumbles under his breath, sliding the gold bar into his satchel. You place your own in your saddle bag, saying nothing as he climbs on to Balius before you both make the trip back to the opening by the lake. You donât have to say anything, he knows what youâre thinking. This is what happens when you help people.Â
â â â â
When youâd arrived at the new camp, called Clemens Point, you found out, Grimshaw had already pitched your tent up next to Arthurâs wagon. You didnât have the heart to tell her it was a waste, so you said nothing. Your tent is on the east side of the camp, not far from the lake. If itâs quiet, you can hear it lapping against the shore quietly. Itâs a little warmer down in Lemoyne, something youâre grateful for.Â
After helping everyone unpack, setting up the rest of the tents, grooming and untacking the horses, unloading the wagons, and cooking dinner, itâs nearly one in the morning. Absolutely exhausted, you begin pulling your gun belt off before you even enter your tent. You push the white canvas open, stepping inside and dropping your belt onto the ground. You strip down your clothes, feeling freer with every shed item until youâre left in just your underthings and a loose-fitting shirt. You take your hair out of its tie, scratching at your scalp before stepping towards the bed.Â
A light knock sounds out on the front beam of your tent, and you smirk as Arthur steps in. Heâs already dressed down, wearing nothing but his union suit and a comfortable pair of jeans.Â
âFigured youâd want me in here.â He says with a smile, stepping forward and wrapping his arms around your waist.Â
âIâm glad you came.â You hum, leaning up on your tiptoes to kiss him. Your lips meet in a sweet, slow kiss. Itâs been a long, hard day and youâre both exhausted. Your lips part as you grip his arm and drag him to bed with you. You lay on your side, and Arthurâs chest lines your back tightly. One of his arms is under your head, and the other is draped over your waist.Â
âI'm sorry about this morninâ.â Arthur whispers, and your lips fall into a small frown. You knew this was coming.
âItâs okay... Just, choose who you wanna be. You canât be a good man and a bad one, you gotta pick.â You say, turning around in his arms. His hands are warm on your body as you look up to his terrified eyes.
âDo you think Iâm a bad man?â He asks, eyes searching yours for any hint of an answer. You shake your head.Â
âNo. I think youâre a good man, one of the best. But I think that can change, if you keep goinâ down this path.â You tell him truthfully, and he nods.
âThanks, darlinâ. Iâll be tryin, for you.â Arthur whispers, pressing a slow, sweet kiss to your temple while releasing a breath.Â
âGet some sleep now, okay?â Arthur says quietly, pulling the blanket further up over you. You hum, content, nuzzling into his chest until youâre fast asleep. It doesnât take long with how exhausted you are.Â
Back in Arthurâs wagon, sitting on his bedside table is his journal, with one new entry scribbled onto the white pages:Â
She sees the good in me. I donât know how or why, and yet she does. She looks at me like Iâm the sunshine, brightening up her day. I fear Iâm the opposite, but Iâm trying everyday to be better for her. Itâs an uphill battle. One step forward, two steps back, but Iâm trying to be the man she deserves. She deserves so much, a family, a real home. Iâd like to give her that one day. Godâ Iâm sweeter on her than honey itself, I reckon. âĄ

Thank you for tagging me @glowing-gold and @crepesuzette2023 it's always fun to talk about writing with you guys.
How many works do you have on A03?
Five
What's your total word count?
141,094
What are your top five fics by kudos?
The Cast Iron Shore -- The Reeperbahn -- Fixing a Hole -- The Importance of Being Erstwhile -- Taking Trophies
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always respond eventually. I tend to go through self-hate spirals after posting things where I can't even acknowledge that the thing exists and looking at comments would be acknowledging that so i ignore everything for a long time. But. I will respond eventually because I sincerely appreciate comments. I love that people take the time to let me know what they liked. I'm sorry and I'm working on this!
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Definitely Taking Trophies. It's literally just angry sex that resolves nothing.
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
The Reeperbahn had to end gloriously golden for all the shit I put them through for all that time to be worth it.
Do you write crossovers?
Lol in high school I wrote a fic where Marius and Cosette are the Parents in Cinderella 2015. So no. The answer is no.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes and it was the greatest day of my life.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. My inclination is to go kinky but I try to keep it vaguely normal lol
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope:)
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope. That would be so cool!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not yet!
What's your all-time favorite ship?
Mclennon is the only thing I've actually ever shipped
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
The Mystery of the Missing Paul is what I've been calling it lately. It would just have to be so long in order to be done right and I'd want it done right, you know? It's just got to be novel length with actual novel amount of planning and development and structuring etc which I can't commit to unfortunately.
What are your writing strengths?
I mean everybody thinks this, but I think I really *get* both John and Paul and can put myself convincingly in their messed-up heads. As far as actual writing, I love to write dialogue. It's always what I write first, actually and comes pretty naturally.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Smut! Embarrassing but true. When some people talk about how difficult it is to write in a second language, I'm like yes! That sounds like me trying to write sex! And it's because only in the last few years of my life have I been breaking out of the puritanical mindset I was raised with. So while I love reading smut, writing it is extremely difficult for me.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
basically my rule is this: if we were watching this, would there be subtitles provided on the screen? Or would we be able to get what they're saying from context clues? If it's the former, just say "in German" or something. If it's the later, and it's just a few lines, it's fine.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Les Miserables. That book took over my life for a few years. I wrote a 30k fix-it just for myself before I even knew people published fanfiction.
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for but really want to?
I mean it's still in the Beatles, but I'd love to write a Linda/Yoko fic where they run away back to New York together and live their best independent artistic lives and raise Heather and Kyoko and go down in history as avant garde lesbians. John and Paul continue to bitch at each other tangentially and Yoko and Linda are unconcerned even though they both agree their exes are gay idiots. Maybe they decide to help them. Maybe they decide to Live and Let Die, who knows. But it would center on them.

I was thinking, the Japanese word for Germany is "Doitsu", from Deutschland.
Before One Piece ran the Whole Cake plot, if someone were to look up Germa-something with its Japanese spelling (Jeruma ă¸ă§ăŤă) it would most likely lead them to the Count of Saint Germain, currently living people whose surname have Germain in it, or various locations in France that contain "Saint Germain" in the name. So even if Oda-sensei eventually becomes aware of the English spelling and pronunciation of "Germany", I feel like it might not be intuitive to him. It's possible that in the initial conception of Germa's setting and lore, "Germany" was not what he was thinking of.
Sensei once mistakenly wrote "cooking" as "cocking" in one of the cover spreads, because in Japanese the word for cook is "kokku" (from the Dutch word "kok"). He may have confused that with English, and ended up with "cocking" instead of "cooking". So I believe the intuitiveness of original Japanese language matter here.
Anyway. The Count of Saint Germain was identified as French adjacent and in Japanese this name is given the French reading. This name's original namesake saint Germain d'Autun was also mainly based in Paris.
In the very early concept art, Judge was himself almost named "Saint Germain", and the name of the Germa castle being "St. Germain" was something that does still make it to the final product (revealed in Vivre Cards).
Not to mention there's a lot of reference to French history and literature in the Germa backstory.
Based on all this, I'm making a guess that it's possible that the concept of Germa was more based on France or French history, and Oda-sensei later gave them the WW2 Germany/German empire imagery either for obfuscation/camouflage, or it's to signify that the "current Germa" is corrupted/messed up.
I could be completely off-base, of course, because this is kind of veering into "psycho-analysing the author" rather than just analysing the work, but well.

Dandadan manga theory time! ** Please watch out! There be spoiler talk ahead!! ** Count Saint-German fellow got Okarun to admit he bested him now he thinks if he stabs him with that knife he can collect Turbo Granny powers outta him. But one thing he is unaware of is that Okarun no longer possesses powers because he returned them to Granny just like he promised. So Saint-German damn near kills the kid over nothing. Only Okarun doesn't die because there is a lucky cat close by who comes back just in time to see him get hurt. She jumps into the kid. Possessing him this time to save his life, because she really likes these damn delinquents now even though she'd never willingly admit it. Okarun regains turbo powers and the two have to remain bonded until he is no longer dancing the line between life and death.

~ ENDED ~
The voting for IFComp ended, the votes are boing counted and the results will be announced on October 19th! You can tune in for the Awards Ceremony stream. (October 19 at 4pm Eastern)
~ ONGOING (SUBMITTING) ~
Another edition of the Bad Art Visual Novel Jam is upon us! The submissions are open until October 19th for anything following the theme Super Hero/Super Villain. Just remember: No good art!
Find inspiration in dusty old decrepit corners, revivify the forgotten - the Revival Jam 2024 is here! You can submit anything you want until the 20th of October.
Strip IF to itâs bare bones and all it become beautiful text. Thatâs what The Bare-Bones Jam is about.
Itâs spooky month and with it comes the annual ECTOCOMP 2024. If itâs spooky or supernatural why not submit it?
Running until Halloween, the Phantasia Jam is a three months game jam to create a fantasy narrative game, with the theme of âHidden Magicâ. It accepts both VN and IF.
On the CoG Forum, Halloween is already there! Until Oct 31st, you can submit your projects to the Halloween Jam - but don't forget the theme! VAMPIRE, Murder, 70âs Disco!
Submissions are accepted March 3rd 2025.

Saint Notburga was the daughter of German peasants. She was a kitchen maid of Count Henry of Rattenberg and saved the leftovers for the poor. The Great War
John âSoapâ McTavish x F!Reader
Synopsis: During the Battle of Somme in France, a Sister Nurse aids in the war tending to the wounded soldiers, especially a handsome and strong-willed Sergeant MacTavish.
Word count: 1.3k
Tags: One-Shot, Historical AU, World War I, 2nd POV, Reader-Insert, Y/N is not used, Reader uses a patron-saint name, Reader is addressed as Sister Maria once, mentions of death, medical procedures, mentions of death, religious and war backdrop, theme, flirting, forbidden love, light angst
Ignoring the cacophony of machinery, grief, and pained screams, as well as the relentless rain and unforgiving wind, France was beautiful both day and night. You had never been to France, or Somme, before. France had a salty, iron odor that lingered in the air. As you attended to the wounded soldiers lying on the drenched and bloody beds, the nights were longer than the days passing by. Time was dedicated to writing in the small sacrament of penance book, no longer used to confess mistakes but rather to write the name and address of the wounded loved ones to send off a letter on their behalf.
As a Nurse, you were sent to France for the first time, to Somme, to assist on the frontlines, in a hospital close to the battle of English countrymen assisting the French allies against the Germans. Last Spring, the war office had decided to employ VADS in military hospitals in the mainland and abroad during the summer. A summer late in 1919, You were sent overseas by the Red Cross; it was your first time in France working in a hospital. You had only stayed back home, working in the local auxiliary hospitals throughout Britain. You were already thinking about assisting the war effort abroad while working in a small hospital, Princess Christian Hospital, so you worked hard to receive a favorable report as the standard to work overseas. Working in the hospital was your only and very first source of income. Before dedicating myself to the faith, office administration did very little to sustain and survive off the rations they received. You could only hope your father was fine back in England; he was not serving the war effort due to his ailing leg, which prevented him from doing heavy activities. Each break of day and break of dawn, the small shared rooms were filled with whispers of prayer for your father and the men teetering on the collapse in and out of the field.
One of the male orderlies went to Etaples to bring more food. During his break, he made a list of what we needed and asked a few of the wounded what they wanted him to bring back. He addressed you as Sister Maria. "Do you want me to bring you tea?" You nodded and thanked him; he said he'd try to bring back English tea; You only smiled. The wounded walked around the small hospital grounds. The patients lay on the pale grass outside on hospital grounds, some would eat a light snack, while others would beg the nursing sisters to play chess with them to distract them from the heavy artillery sounds that could be heard. A few wounded patients would request that their letters to their families be delivered to the local post office on their behalf. Collecting their letters, putting them in envelopes, and getting them stamped was not the issue. Mailing them in and seeing that they were sent and reached their loved ones was the issue, knowing that some had taken every bit of breath to say their goodbyes and their strength to hand you their letter was the issue.
John MacTavish was the only man who had every strength to write letters and even wildly request to send them himself.
The Scotsman perched over the small desk, crushing the cigarette against the bottom of the ashtray. He turns to look at you, his eyes flickering at the new dressings and clean nightshirt bundled in your arms. The corners of his eyes curved up with a smile adorning his rugged appearance.
âThe hour is late,â he remarks already unbuttoning his nightshirt. He moves to the edge of the bed patting the space next to him. âHave ye missed me yet again?â
You settle on the edge of the bed instead much to the manâs persistent pleas of sitting side by side. âOh, I wouldn't say so Sergeant MacTavish,â You say placing the supplies on your lap and the small makeshift bed cot. You handed him the nightshirt concealing your grin. âDid ye aye?â he chuckles, the corners of his eyes crinkling with amusement. âThis must be the millionth time ye come into the night.â
âItâs a good thing Iâm not the reaper then,â You say unwrapping the old and marred dressing and pouring saline into a syringe. âI might not have a scythe, but I do have this,â you smirked with a slight wave of the syringe. âConsider yourself lucky.â
The Sergeant whistled, with a nod. âYer much scarier than the Grim Reaper bonnie.â You felt his baby blue eyes on you, his intense gaze fixed on every move of your hands and head, making all heat rush to the apples of your cheeks. He was searching for your eyes, You knew that. He needed approval. You nodded to him, meeting his piercing eyes, so bright despite the dimly lit room. You gave it to him, just as when you first did.
His hand carefully and slowly trailed on your lap, gently resting his hand on your thigh and caressing it. You carefully flushed the wound, directing the stream of saline to wash away any visible contaminants. MacTavish gritted his teeth against the discomfort but remained still, continuing to rub circles gentler than before. His other arm wrapped around your hips, fingertips dancing on the black fabric of the tunic dress almost as if he was not only soothing himself but myself too. Using a cotton swab, you applied iodine to the wound and the surrounding skin, to prevent infection. His fingers pinched your waist with a grip. âAlmost there,â You whisper, leaning closer to him, His strong jawline relaxing. âKeep your eyes open, keep them on me, Johnny.â His baby blue eyes widened slightly as he locked his eyes on your face. You glanced at him, his forehead coated with sweat and his lips parted with every breath he exhaled.
âBonnieââ
âYouâre doing so good.â You carefully applied a sterile dressing to the wound, securing it in place with bandages. He squeezed your thigh not with the feeling of pain, not in that moment. You grabbed the dress shirt as his hands stroked your lower back pulling you closer to him, careful to not rest your hands against his wounded chest. You rest your forehead against his. We let the silence envelop us, tranquility overcomes us for now. You shut all of the noise of the outside world except for his words of praise and lingering touch.
MacTavish will recover. His fingers cupped your chin with his thumb grazing on your lips. You know it. âEmâ not afraid.â He says, with a soft smile. Outside, the rumble of tanks and distant explosions punctuate the night air. your fingers brush lightly against MacTavish's cheek, tracing the rough outline of his jaw. His eyes flutter closed for a moment, a brief respite from the pain. You reach for a glass of water, carefully lifting it to his lips. He drinks eagerly, the cool liquid providing some relief from the throbbing ache in his chest. âThe hour is late,â You say, âbut it is far from over.â
âWe can hold emâ off,â he mummers, âand weâll be home Bonnie,â Johnny says offering a faint smile. âTogether.â
You could feel a lump in your throat. The notion had never crossed your mind, let alone be entertained as a possibility. Dwelling possibilities are dangerous. You couldnât bear imagining him anywhere else other than the bed cot where he was safe for now. The sea was no longer a comforting sanctuary and instead served as a patron for war. His breathing has become shallow, his eyelids drooping with tiredness. âWeâll go back home together.â You say, âFor now, you should rest.â You wrapped the blanket around each other, shifting around for comfort. You sink down onto the makeshift cot beside him, your still entwined with his as we both drift into an uneasy sleep.

Top 5 tropes, top 5 dog breeds, top 5 saints
Tropes
I have forgotten every single trope, and can't decide exactly what counts as a trope, so I'm just going to list five story elements that usually capture my interest.
The tension between idealism and practicality
Morally upright heroes
Trickster heroes who use their powers for good
Time travel (specifically when time travel is explored as a story element, rather than just as a means to get to another time)
Arranged marriage romances
Dog Breeds
Mostly listing types of dogs I've known personally and had good experiences with
Collie
Black lab
Golden retriever
German shepherd
Basset hound
Saints
Since I've made this list a few times before, I'm going to list some saints who have captured my attention lately.
St. Thomas Aquinas: Mentions of him kept popping up in my life, and Chesterton's bio of him made me love him as a person. Plus, some prayers by him have become important parts of my prayer routine lately.
St. Frances de Sales: I read only the first part of his very first book of apologetics before it went back to the library, but since then, I think about it at least on a weekly, if not a daily basis.
St. Michael: He's always been a presence in my family's devotions (several family members have him as a patron, and he's patron of a local parish), but looking up Michaelmas traditions this week drew me to him in a much more personal way.
St. Mary Magdalene: I've always liked her, but lately I've been drawn to her in a more unique way
St. Theresa of Calcutta: I saw a documentary about her that felt very relevant to my life and work, so I've felt a new closeness to her since then.
#answered asks#catholic things#i dove into the michaelmas thing#after seeing people talk about their hobbit day traditions#which is all fine and dandy go ahead and have fun#but one person specifically framed it as#'we used to have yearly celebrations tied to the cycles of seasons and faith'#'and we've lost that so now i try to make yearly seasonal traditions like that'#and my catholic brain went haywire#we still HAVE the liturgical calendar!#don't abandon that and then elevate FICTIONAL things to take its place!#it feels so sacreligious to specifically celebrate hobbits when we have perfectly good autumn traditions surrounding saints#especially since tolkien was such a devout catholic i feel like he'd hate that#so i acknowledge hobbit day because it's fun#but i'm making a point of marking michaelmas in some way this year#which is difficult because the main way to celebrate it seems to be 'eat a goose'#but there is a tradition of blackberry desserts and a couple of bread/cake recipes tied to the festival#so i can work with that
