I just realized that if I’ve got a little head world full of reimagined Spider-man villain’s anyway, I could just take my favorite wild reinterpretation of the Vulture and make him his own character.
So meet Butcherbird.
#his coloration is actually based on a species of shrike that is not technically a butcherbird but it also butcher’s its prey so it counts#the feather ruff didn’t work if he wasn’t a vulture so he’s just slinging around a big jacket#his mouth also once again changed!#I’m fully embracing that he’s a weird conglomeration of animal genes so his jaw hinges like a goblin shark#the keratin in his nose grows and stretches to strengthen the top of the ‘beak’ which mostly hides this#but I drew all the bones!#it’s awful!#my art#the butcherbird#shrike Maddicks#Spiderman villain redesigns#specter spider au

Traumatizing Sky in fun and silly new ways :D
Ok I know shrikes probably don’t exist in hyrule but NEVERTHELESS
if there is a shockingly violent predatory songbird on our planet I can’t NOT draw Sky meeting it
Also here is the lineart which I like better idk why
#I drew the shrike from memory so it probably looks a bit weird sorry#linked universe#doodles#lu#linkeduniverse#linked universe fanart#Lu sky#ok actually fun fact time#A) did you know shrikes are also known as butcherbirds? They often impale their prey to save for later#B) I am an avid bird lover! (I.e. birdwatching! Bird photography! and just general excitement when presented with bird!)#you probably already know this if you know me on my other blog#C) my dad my brother and I once spent like 4 hours in a field in the middle of winter looking for a shrike… we never found it XD#My art

IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR, SWORDTEMBER 2024 (get your prompt list here)
Wings "An implacable weapon that settles for nothing less than the complete subjugation of its opponents. Its preferred technique is a single and swift impalement that leaves shattered bones and armor in its path, often severing the spine in the process.
It resembles a lance more than a sword, disdaining the cut and adoring the thrust. Even in the hands of a novice wielder, it hunts targets with unstoppable force."

The Shrike is a brutal killer carnivore, also known as “The Butcherbird,” b/c it impales its prey and uses a special maneuver to break the neck of small rodents. But, it looks like this.
Cute, but deadly AF.

Just realized that instead of coming up with a whole new name, I could just let Butcherbird fully subsume Marvel’s only other Laniidae themed character: Simon “Killer Shrike” Maddicks.
There’s no canon relation between Simon and Arthur “Artie” Maddicks but. I mean I’m already letting The Ultimate Spider-Man’s Vulture be his own character. So you can’t exactly stop me now.
#my art#the butcherbird#Shrike Maddicks#<- Simon’s their dead name and also I don’t want to throw them into the main tag#artie maddicks#specter spider au

a few NZ adult sff books!
for @thereadingchallengechallenge following an ask from a week or two ago
most of these authors also have other books that I love! I have mentioned specifically their books that are set here (or Aotearoa-inspired fantasy)
From A Shadow Grave by Andi Buchanan (alternate history fantasy based on a real life murder/wellington ghost story)
The Dawnhounds by Sasha Stronach (queer alchemical-biopunk dystopian fantasy)
No Man’s Land by AJ Fitzwater (queer historical fantasy about land girls in WWII)
The Stone Wētā by Octavia Cade (climate fiction novella about an underground network protecting science data in the future)
The Wind City by Rem Wigmore (urban fantasy set in Wellington)
How To Get A Girlfriend When You’re A Terrifying Monster by Marie Cardno (cute sapphic monster romance novella)
Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka (nonlinear myth retelling, this is definitely more in the direction of literary fiction tbh)
Butcherbird by Cassie Hart (supernatural horror/suspense, not quite sff enough for my tastes but might be of interest?)
Wake by Elizabeth Knox (similarly more horror/thriller than sff-y; she also has a fantasy called The Absolute Book that I haven’t read yet)
I already mentioned Na Viro by Gina Cole, but since I think it’s adult I’ll mention it again here! it’s a Pasifikafuturist sci-fi/fantasy
#I swear there's more in my head but my brain is mush atm#(i mean obviously there's more but like. what I have read)#but there's a couple anyway!#obv always check CWs if you need but as a note butcherbird has a somewhat graphic SA scene#book recommendations#nz books#aotearoa books#it's been a long time since I read wake also

The new addition to the family.
The newest pied butcherbird. Its parents brought it around today to introduce it to me, and the cheese and rolled oats I put out for them.

Todays bird of the day is the pied butcherbird! The butcherbird gets their name from their feeding habits - they impale captured prey on small branches before eating them. They share this title and behaviour with the shrike, but are unrelated, as Australia doesn’t have any native shrikes. They are related to the Australian Magpie (who aren’t corvids like other magpies) and share their swooping tendencies. They also have a lovely, layered song in contrast with their more violent behaviours
#sometimes it’s just the bird but if i already know a lot about it i will share#and i think butcherbirds are cool! however my brother did get attacked by one once#bird of the day#14#pied butcherbird#australian birds#birdblr#Artimidae#my photos
