Wanted to gather my thoughts, so here they are re: bbc!Javert's arc related to Valjean saving people when Javert is around. And some other related thoughts. Not that organized, but well...
From Javert's POV, he watched Valjean save a guard, a guy under the cart, Fantine, Champ, (Cosette), and finally Marius.
In Toulon, Valjean saves a guard's life, after failing to kill him, but that's beside the point; funnily enough Javert didn't notice that Valjean did it on purpose because he wasn't watching at that moment, so he only saw him saving a life. And because he did, and Javert went ??? he called him to his little torture chamber and his first question was: Why did you save his life? Javert thought Valjean did it to get a reward, to be released, because why else would a convict save a life, right? Plus, he thinks Valjean did it to ridicule Javert. He's just looking for reasons, and makes it personal. Javert singles out Valjean, because he doesn't understand him, because Valjean's actions don't make sense to him, because Valjean disregarded his authority - Javert was in charge, he was giving orders, and his men failed and Valjean "won"; he makes up an imaginary contest in his own head and thinks he's superior. And if he was a criminal? He'd be better than Valjean too.
When Valjean saves Fantine from getting arrested, Javert asks: What exactly does this woman mean to you, Monsieur le Maire? because again, he can't wrap his head around why he would do that, why he would risk the mayor's reputation to help a prostitute (if there wasn't something between them). And to cross Javert. Again.
At this point, he has three instances of Valjean saving someone (the guy under the cart is the third one, which happened before Fantine). But because Javert is so wrapped in self-hate and Valjean-hate, he doesn't actually process what it means, exactly. He just knows that Valjean would save a person in need, even if that person is unrelated to him, even if they have no connections. And so he sets up a trap with Champ and the trial in Arras.
(I do believe his "you astonish me" was genuine, but then he suppressed it and continued with his "gotta uncover Valjean" and did not process it)
The thing about this adaptation is that Javert didn't ask Madeleine to ask for his dismissal; Javert turned in his resignation to Madeleine. But Madeleine's not in charge of the police, the only thing that Javert did, imho, was to resign from his position as the police inspector in Montreuil. He didn't resign from the police force. So even if Valjean didn't bite and fall into his trap, Javert would just have to leave Montreuil (and wait for a different opportunity, which would be harder since "Jean Valjean" would be imprisoned, and Javert’s own career might be postponed). But I digress. (I could also be wrong, but this makes the most sense to me.)
When Valjean does come forward, Javert is elated. He was right from the beginning, and that's pretty much his only thought. He doesn't stop to think what it says about Valjean, he just wants to see him in chains again. And he does, and he's happy. Javert relocates to Paris, gets promoted, and probably lives a pretty content life for two years. Like in the book, he probably even forgot about Valjean because he was behind the bars.
And then, Valjean makes a comeback. Javert makes his whole department believe that Valjean is very dangerous (a note: Javert believes this. He thinks Valjean is dangerous and he's also afraid – among other things – of him and his strength) and they spent time and resources on catching him. And Javert fails and loses Valjean for 10 years. And since then, nothing can satisfy him, nothing can give him pleasure. He's lonely and depressed and his failure, the fact that Valjean is at large, haunts him, and his obsession gets worse. He makes a picture of Valjean in his head, believing that he's laughing at him and mocking him. "I shall never be at peace until he’s back in chains."
Gorbeau House happens. Javert gets worse to the point where he even ignores his job, but isn't even aware of it because he connects Valjean with the revolution in his mind. It all makes sense in his head. There's nothing in his mind but Valjean. When he catches him, everything will be fine again. Everything that has been lacking in his life is the fault of "Valjean being free". That is Javert's mindset. Has been for 10 years in this series. Not only does he project his self-hatred but also his self-worth on Valjean.
Barricade happens. Javert genuinely believes that Valjean would kill him. And Valjean lets him go, and Javert doesn't get it. And he finally starts to think and processing, but it was only after he saw Valjean saving Marius that an even bigger shift happened.
Javert: That young man… is he a… particular friend… of yours? Would you say he’s… dear to you? Valjean: Quite the contrary. If he lives, he intends to rob me of all my happiness. Javert: And yet you… are you insane? Valjean: No, I don’t think so. Are you?
Once again, Javert sees Valjean saving someone. Once again, he asks him why? Who is Marius to him? Is he close? Is he dear to him? He's choosing the words carefully, not because of jealousy (even though that subtext is fun too, but not the primary one imho), but because he wants to believe that Marius is someone Valjean cares about. Because if he is, then yes, it makes sense because people save those they're close to. But Valjean tells him that no. That Marius's someone who will rob him, cause him harm. And he still saves him.
From Javert's POV, saving the guard in Toulon brought Javert's wrath. Saving the guy under the cart gave Javert ammunition. Saving Fantine risked the mayor's reputation (and gave Javert more ammunition). Saving Champ cost Valjean his freedom. Letting Javert go meant that Javert could still continue his hunt and it would cost Valjean's freedom again. And now, saving Marius is also detrimental for Valjean himself.
Javert finally understands that Valjean is a good person who helps those who need it. He is a person who redeemed himself. The image Javert created in his mind was a lie. All that Valjean has done in his life, as Madeleine, was good and genuine. And Javert? He wasted years and years on a man who did not exist.
Javert: Are you insane? Valjean: No, I don't think so. Are you?
Javert: I let [Valjean] go. Rivette: An act of clemency? Javert: An act of madness.
And I just genuinely enjoy his character.
#les miserables bbc#les miserables#javert#jean valjean#valvert#the book is the book. the bbc 'verse is the bbc 'verse#yes i am aware that probably 80% of this is why people don't like this version? but i enjoy how broken he is#and i like the dynamic between javert and valjean#and idk his character just makes sense if you treat the series as its own thing#i completely get that this type of character might not be everyone's cup of tea tho

MC: Comte, there's been some worrying news lately. I think some of your vampires aren't as good as you think they are about keeping a lid on their talents.
Comte: They know they're supposed to publish new works under a pseudonym. I'm not concerned.
MC: *shows him the BBC post about a new book in Ireland, points at the words BRAM STOKER* He's been dead for one hundred years.
MC: *shows him a video of a new string trio composition, points at the word MOZART* He's been dead for two hundred years.
MC: *shows him a new verse of the Epic of Gilgamesh* Sin-leqi-unninni has been dead for THREE THOUSAND years.
MC: ...
Comte: *sighs* Fine, I'll have a word with them.

Through a Glass, Darkly by Calais Reno
Chapter 3: Partners
Holmes and Watson/ 2017 (BBC-verse):
While Watson receives medical attention, Holmes has an interesting conversation with a Lestrade lookalike, minus side-whiskers.
He hates the word somehow. It means he has no idea how this happened, and if something has already happened (as this clearly has), Sherlock Holmes ought to at least have a theory to explain it. How can he even gather evidence? They were in an alley, someone was shooting at them, Watson was hit, and now they’re in the year 2017.
But it can’t be that they’ve travelled through time. That happens in the sort of books Watson reads, but those are just fantasies. The world has three dimensions. A person might travel on a train, on a ship, in an automobile, or even in a special ship that flies to the moon. That’s science. One might go north, south, east, west, up, or down—but not forwards or backwards in time.
And how can there be another Sherlock Holmes living at 221B Baker Street?
Tagging: If I've missed your request, or you wish not to be tagged, please let me know! Thank you for reading and reblogging!

- Multiple submissions with different characters are fine!
- Matchups will be posted as soon as I have enough submissions and will include the most submitted characters
-Resubmissions are fine as long as they weren’t on the tourney last time

I had issues on my end with some technicalities and media’s. eg a lot of characters from the hatchetfield musicals by team starkid were just submitted as hatchetfield which made it harder to search for them to identify them and get pictures etc. If those and similar fandoms could be submitted with what musical etc they’re from that would be great :)
Those who sent submissions through my askbox will be getting submitted by me unless it was off anon(because you’ll be getting a notification)

The search , Supernatural, Saltburn, ACOTAR, Shadowhunters, Fast & Furious, Sherlock and More
Heyo! 25 year old female writer here. I’m eighteen plus so please please please ensure you are before writing to me! Now about me, I do work, quick fire would be nice but I can’t always be here. So you may see me post more depending on what ideas I’ve got and what cravings I have. But with my time off you can guarantee I’ll be posting more! Just a heads up I’m looking for clean roleplays! I do prefer discord to conduct roleplays purely for the purpose of being able to keep things more organised! My discord is eleanorewinchester
So I’m looking for those of you who can use third person, past tense and lots of detail. I say this not to be mean but because I do consider myself to be advanced literate, I expect potential partners to be the same! I’m looking for oc (me) x male canon characters from the above movies but I will enclose further fandoms and movies with in the post! I use third and past tense and would be grateful if you do too! Please note I do have dyslexia. I’d love to get some aus going as well as some love triangles. Doubles are welcome! But please note ALL my roleplays are doubles. I will be prioritising those of you who don’t want to double and are happy to play canons. I’m just getting to a point where doubles feel transactional, I’d like to do something for myself where I can :).
I’m also craving; Fast & Furious, Saltburn and Supernatural, (please?! I would kill for a good detailed roleplay), Sherlock (please?!), Shadowhunters (please I beg?!), A Court of Thorns and roses, Supernatural, The Musketeers (bbc show), My Life With the Walters, Hunger Games (originals and prequel), GG at the moment as well! I’d honestly kill for someone to play; Felix Catton, Brian O’conner, Dean Winchester or Jace Wayland, Jules or Mark.
I’d love our roleplay to be something of comfort to us both. Something to cheer us up and keep us engaged in the story! If you’ve got any wild ideas you’ve been dying to do for the below fandoms send them my way if it’s doubles I’ll do my best to accommodate them! If there’s a character in brackets that’s who I’m looking to ship with, I need you to play them! Any fandoms with hearts are ones I’m desperate for!
Fandoms I seek include:
Fast and furious (Brian) ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Shadowhunters (Book/Show verse) (Jace, Julian, Mark)
Sherlock (Sherlock,John)
Superstore (Jonah)
Supernatural (Dean) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
ACOTAR (Cassian,Lucien, Rhys) ❤️

A Break Down of ALL (some) John Watsons across the vast Sherlock-verse
wonder if this a sign of my four personalities (that was a sign of the four joke)
also, disclaimer: THIS IS NOT ALL WATSON. THERE ARE TOO MANY ADAPTATIONS AND ID LIKE TO KEEP MY REMAINING SANITY PLEASE
my camera roll gets absolutely destroyed by these posts tbh. this is how much I love you guys (and the validation u give me)
Book John Watson
source: the books. duh.
john’s the mustache guy ^^
this is the best version of John Watson. I will take no rebuttals.
he’s like… bbg. idk how to explain it
he’s lowkey adorable. He’s just like: “oh my bestie Sherlock solved another case… I like to write”
he is also like… lacks self-awareness SO much
in THOTB he like… gets excited because he misunderstands a thinly veiled insult
precious precious man
“Elementary, Joan Watson”
source: Elementary (2012-2019)
girlboss. straight girlboss. when I grow up I wanna be like Joan Watson in elementary
elementary itself, as a show, is so-so (and certainly not the best one) but I liked Joan
her character arc is also pretty cool tbh
also… fashion icon. straight up. she predicted the checkered sweater look. she did that.
BBC’s Watson
Source: BBC’s Sherlock (2010-2017)
this is just a sassier version of the original stories
like, he’s still a precious, precious, cinnamon roll, her just happens to know how to use a gun
john and his banter 100% makes the show better. and he’s the more emotional counterpart of Sherlock
and I am very biased towards Martin Freeman. that much is very valid, I think.
Watson but make it
✨A Gnome✨
source: Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel of Gnomeo & Juliet that no one asked for
i mostly added this as a joke…. and I’m sure fans of that series with RDJ or something are steaming over this but it humored me
Watson in this movie…. is a girlboss. total girlboss.
like he outsmarts SHERLOCK. unrealistic, sure, but queen behavior nonetheless
#Hope rambles sometimes oop#Sherlock#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#sherlock fandom#sherlockbbc#john watson#dr watson#bbc john watson

NEW ABOUT RIVALS 💯💯💯💯
New article in the Harper's Bazaar UK, October Issue, to promote "Rivals"!
Amazing photoshoot !
Here is the article of the Harper's Bazaar Uk magazine !!
Thanks to Emma Jones for the written transcription ! 🙏👍🌺
Harpers Bazaar - October 2024
BEST OF ENEMIES
Bazaar recreates the fictional county of Rutshire to meet the cast of Rivals, a new TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s racy 1980s blockbuster
As Jilly Cooper’s Rivals leaps rambunctiously to our screens, we meet the cast of the saucy new show
It’s 1986 and, high over the Atlantic, a London-bound Concorde is about to break the sound barrier. Most passengers continue smoking, flicking through magazines and ordering martinis, while the rattling WC door indicates that two are currently joining the mile-high club. Moments later, an unruffled, glamorous couple emerge triumphantly from the loo and the tannoy announces that supersonic speed has been reached: everyone whoops; glasses are clinked; and the thumping chorus of ‘You might as well face it/you’re addicted to love’ is amped up. This is the opening scene of Rivals, the much-anticipated new television adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bestselling novel, and it’s so unsubtle that, even alone in a dark screening bunker below the streets of Soho, it makes me splutter with laughter. It is also irresistible.
The 1988 book is a classic of the Cooper canon and part of the Rutshire Chronicles, a series based in a fictional Cotswolds county that follows the lives and loves of the affluent elite – an area the team behind its new, and first, on-screen adaptation are well-versed in bringing to life. Produced by A Very English Scandal ’s Dominic Treadwell-Collins and written by Laura Wade, who was behind The Riot Club, Disney+’s eight-part drama is also executivelyproduced by both Cooper and her literary agent Felicity Blunt. It is largely faithful to the novel but, as that has 700 pages and 79 characters listed by name and personality trait in an A-Z at the front, the show necessarily homes in on the central plot lines.
The two main protagonists are Rupert Campbell-Black (played by Alex Hassell), a former Olympic-gold show jumper turned Conservative MP (and, incidentally, the ‘best-looking man in England’); and Declan O’Hara (Aidan Turner), an Irish broadcasting star who leaves the BBC to move to Rutshire with his actress wife Maud and children Taggie, Caitlin and Patrick. Declan’s new employer, Corinium Television, is run by David Tennant’s vile Lord Tony Baddingham and his sidekick Cameron Cook, an American producer he has lured over from New York, depicted by the US native Nafessa Williams. They are joined by a large supporting cast that includes Danny Dyer and Emily Atack.
The titular rivalries are many and varied, primarily centred on the struggle to win the local TV franchise; simultaneously, characters lock horns over love, money, class, pets, politics and property, while presenting chat shows, throwing parties and playing nude tennis. The resulting viewing experience is both a period drama that seems set on another planet and a series exploring themes that still resonate today.
Cooper – who, at 87, is still in full ownership of her signature cloud of coiffed hair, inimitable charisma and a hundred-mile-an hour conversation – loved working on the project. It’s terribly exciting,’ she tells me, with an amazed shake of the head. ‘Other books of mine have been televised and it was awful – but with this, we took casting very seriously and I can’t fault any of them.’
During a break on Bazaar ’s shoot, Turner tells me how Cooper gave a cocktail party for the cast in her garden, and what a ball they all had filming in the West Country last summer. (The latter is clear: he’s delighted to see his co-stars, including the mongrel Pontie, who plays Gertrude, the O’Hara family dog, and some of her canine colleagues brought along for a day in front of the camera.)
The series appealed to the Poldark star immediately. ‘I thought the scripts were really, really funny – line-wise, I have some crackers,’ he says. Turner’s Declan is a big-hearted if self involved journalist, wrestling to reconcile his bosses’ desire to monetise his charm, his own dream of writing a Yeats documentary and the need to bread-win for his profligate family. Although this push and pull between being commercial and creative, between the professional and the personal, plays out in a larger-than-life fashion, it still somehow feels familiar to a modern viewer. ‘That’s the sign of really good television, isn’t it, when it holds the mirror up to our present,’ says the actor. ‘What have we thrown in the trash? What still needs to change?’
The ways in which prejudices have evolved in the past 40 years are thrown into quite harsh relief in the show. Casting a Black actress to play Cameron Cook, the damaged but resilient hot-shot American producer, gives the series an opportunity to delicately include a glimpse of the regularity of what we’d now recognise as racist micro aggressions. Equally, Cameron’s strength is joyful to witness. ‘Such a spicy, smart character – especially a Black woman, who can carry her own and get her way in the male-dominated world of that time – I wanted to sink my teeth into that,’ Williams says. ‘I also love the glamour: the red lip, the red nails.’ (The cast have embraced the scarlet-stiletto emoji – a replica of the original image on the classic book cover – as their unofficial series motif when posting on social media.)
The changing dynamics between men and women are portrayed with a light touch. Victoria Smurfit read Cooper as a teenager, and has now adored playing Declan’s wife Maud O’Hara – an insecure, attentionseeking former actress, the kind of mother who arrives at her son’s New Year’s Eve 21st-birthday party in the Cotswolds on a camel. ‘There are aspects of Rivals that make you think, “Oh my Lord, can you believe they got away with this back then?”’ the Irish actress says. ‘But in the show, it’s delivered in such a clear, fun, gentle, appalled way that a 2024 audience can digest it very easily.’ When I suggest the series has made more of the women and ensured they have three dimensions, perhaps to modernise the story a little, she makes a good point: that Cooper’s male characters – be it the rakish Rupert Campbell-Black or the angelic Lysander Hawkley of The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous – may seem the most famous because it was mostly women reading the books, and the author had designed her heroes – or antiheroes – to be ‘their perfect man’. ‘But look closely, and the women are not less than the men,’ she says. ‘Essentially, every character wants something they don’t have – usually love and safety – whether from their partners, animals or colleagues. Women in this world are entering the era of “having it all” and are learning to be open about what they want – and, by the same token, we are starting to see a softer side to the men.’
This is embodied perfectly in Bella Maclean’s Taggie O’Hara, the delightful, very dyslexic cook and daughter of Declan and Maud: on screen, she has slightly more twinkle in her eye than in the book – a good decision, as otherwise Taggie could be seen as almost too virtuous to be true to a modern audience. ‘But it’s so nice playing someone with a really strong backbone – it slightly rubs off on you,’ says the actress, who appeared in the latest Sex Education series and has just shone as the lead at the National Theatre’s London Tide. ‘Among all the silliness, the shoulder pads and mad hairdos, there’s always an undercurrent of something thought-provoking,’ she says of the show that could prove to be her career’s turning point. ‘There’s a love story that blossoms out of something really unpleasant. There’s light and shade.’
But the figure with perhaps the most chiaroscuro is Rupert Campbell-Black, Cooper’s number-one character, into whose shoes Alex Hassell is amazed to be stepping. Hassell is a seasoned RSC actor, with turns in The Miniaturist and His Dark Materials, whose theatre company The Factory counts Mark Rylance and Emma Thompson among its patrons. ‘I’m also from Essex, with dark features,’ he points out wryly, in reference to the white-blond locks and blue eyes of his new alter-ego, both of which are oft-alluded to in the books, and about which many young women dreamed in the 1980s and 90s. (Cooper was initially appalled.) ‘Rupert exudes privilege and confidence, so I had to learn a loucheness. It was helpful that everyone was told to treat me as if I was extremely attractive,’ he continues, laughing. ‘When you walk into a room of supporting artists who’ve been briefed to fall over themselves looking at you, smouldering becomes a lot easier. They imbued me with a certain power.’
In the Rivals prequel Riders, there are some pretty unpalatable aspects of Rupert’s personality – particularly the way he treats women and animals – that haven’t aged well. ‘We never explicitly had this conversation, but for my portrayal of Rupert, we’ve kept some parts of that history and taken out others. In our version, there’s a loneliness to him: he is a shit, but he has a kindness.’
However, there are two elements of Cooper’s storytelling to which the show stays steadfastly loyal: the abundance of sex and wordplay. Rupert’s dialogue is riddled with quips – some very clever, some very… Eighties. Hassell’s favourite is delivered just as Rupert is getting down to it, and involves a pun that combines Tories and the clitoris. ‘It was a hard sell,’ he says, laughing.
His character and storyline – which takes Rupert on, dare I say, a journey – are key to the show’s charm, pace, plot and sociopolitical signposting. What would Hassell like viewers to make of the series? ‘I hope people enjoy it, have conversations about the knottier topics it raises, and maybe have sex later,’ he says. ‘I say that jokingly, but – and maybe this is high hopes – perhaps for people who don’t talk to one another that much, as the series goes on, watching it with someone else might allow certain things to come to light.’
Cooper is delighted by this possibility. ‘Well, we’re philanthropists, aren’t we? I keep reading that the birth rate is going down like mad. Putting Rivals on the telly may help,’ she says, with the enthusiasm of a writer who has long had one foot in showbusiness: in her forties, she appeared in her capacity as a celebrity columnist on the BBC game show What’s My Line, and wrote a sitcom about a four-girl flat-share with Joanna Lumley in the lead role.
Revisiting the world she created – and partially lived in herself – 40 years ago has been bittersweet: it made her miss the era (‘it was much more naughty’), but also her late husband (‘there’s a lot of darling Leo and his jokes in the book’). Indeed, what today’s viewers may not clock is the real people Cooper drew on to shape several fictional figures, namely the ‘glamorous aristocratic types who were floating about when I, middle-class Jilly, moved to the country in ’82’. Rupert Campbell-Black, for example, is a patchwork of Andrew Parker Bowles, the late Earl of Suffolk and the fashion designer Rupert Lycett-Green. Her ‘beloved’ Taggie is entirely made up, but the scruffy Lizzie Vereker – a novelist whose husband cheats on her – is, she admits, based on herself: ‘She is nicer than me, though. I love her – that’s terribly narcissistic to say, but I do.’
Like her conversation, Cooper herself still rattles along at a good clip – last year, she released a bonkbuster about football inevitably titled Tackle!; this May, the King presented her with a damehood for services to charity and literature, and she’ll be tapping away at her typewriter on various secret projects right up to the very moment she is dragged out of rural Gloucestershire to the premiere of Rivals.
To all these endeavours, Dame Jilly continues to bring the same philosophies she always has: a disregard for snobbery (like many great minds, she rereads Proust and loves Helen Fielding) and a straightforward goal of contributing to the gaiety of the nation. ‘Maybe one day I’ll write something serious,’ she says. ‘But, at the moment, there’s some terrible sadness and loneliness, isn’t there? So, more than ever, and more than anything, I’d like to cheer people up.’
‘Rivals’ is released on Disney+ in October.

Holy Ground
Taylor has described Holy Ground as reminiscing on a past relationship, which the final is. The draft lyrics in the Lover Journal do not refer to it as a past relationship however, that was added later. The album arrangement of Holy Ground is upbeat, fast tempo, with State of Grace it was part of the anthemic opening of the Red Tour. In the 2019 BBC Live Lounge which was recorded in NY Taylor played it slow and sad:
youtube
Red Secret Message "When you came to the show in SD"
The Secret Message for Holy Ground is "When you came to the show in SD." Which may be Saint-Denis, the district and canal in Paris very close to Le Zenith which Taylor played on 17 March 2011.
They had the opportunity to meet when One Direction and Taylor were both in LA in 25-30 January 2011. This may be the referred to "first glance". Begin again shows them texting each other. From then until the 16 March they toured different countries.
One Direction had a 3 day weekend 16 - 19 March. Harry left Brighton the morning of 17 March. Taylor was in Paris on the 16, 17 and 18 March. Taylor then went to Madrid and Harry re-appeared at the O2 on 19 March. Thank you @cntfightmydemonsthyknowhowtoswim for these links.
This was the first show on the Speak Now Tour that Taylor played Fearless and Train's "Soul Sister" in a mash up, which appeared on/off for the rest of the tour. Soul Sister was Harry's X-Factor audition song.
They were then both in London and on Wednesday 23 March Taylor wore a white dress similar to the cover of Begin Again. Taylor was in London many times for the rest of the year
What about San Diego?
People have theorised that SD is her show in San Diego on 20 October 2011, suggestion Joe Jonas attended, however he was in Paris on that date. One Direction did have time off then though.
Why Paris? Paris features in the music videos for Begin Again, Everything has Changed, Falling, Paris Lyric video and the Love on Tour Images for What Makes you Beautiful.
What Taylor said about the song
In the Red album talk Taylor said she wrote the song about a past relationship and appreciated the relationship for what it was. Of note, she pauses *a lot*, like 6 times in 10 seconds, and pinches her hands, in the part where she says it was a past relationship.
Taylor said she wrote Holy Ground after seeing the muse in February 2012. In January, she had been 'holidaying' in London (having spent months there the year before) being papped walking alone. She left London the same day as One Direction, 27 January, ahead of Harry's 18th birthday 1 February 2012. See 2011 timeline. More thanks to @cntfightmydemonsthyknowhowtoswim
She speaks with no pauses once she talks about the production. She mentioned Jeff Bhasker, who worked on the song and went on to be one of Harry's main collaborators.
On 3 February, the day after Harry's 22 Tweet Taylor Liked a Tumblr post of Holy Ground Lyrics also.
Lover Journal
Taylor also shared a Lover Journal (book 3) entry for March 16 2011, where in Paris, she said "My life is so beautiful right now. Every once in a while I have to remind myself to breathe and take in the view", later a Lyric in Paris and something Harry said on the Jonathan Ross show 16 November 2013.
The original lyrics to Holy Ground are on the next page (dated "February 2012", and not yet complete) with Love Story on the adjacent page. These February 2012 Lyrics are quite different, "Back when" and the last verses with "dust on every page" are missing, it is reminiscing, but not after a break up. It is likely the song was further developed when recorded mid-year and their relationship changed.
Live Performances
Holy Ground was on the Red Tour setlist and then only played a handful of times:
30 June 2015 - 1989 Surprise Song in Dublin, followed a Clean speech:
Everyone here tonight has [...] things that haunt them. [...]. Memories you wish you didn’t have. Memories you wish you could forget. [...] whether you lost someone you never thought you’d lose or you lost yourself. Or you fell in love with a person or a habit that was bad for you, and you couldn’t quit. [...].
22 October 2016 - her only live show of 15 songs that year, played between Style and an Enchanted/Wildest Dreams mashup. Harry and Taylor had been in New York.
22 May 2018 - Reputation Surprise Song in Seattle, first show after their anniversary.
29 August 2019 - BBC Live Lounge recorded in NY (above) one of 6 songs. Harry was in London, on the 19th he lost the Rose Ring.
27 May 2023 - Eras Surprise Song, NJ, in a green dress with False God. "I feel pretty good about this song for tonight, it's called Holy Ground". It also replaced EHC in the recorded Red intro when the Joe Break up was announced in April 2023.
Lyrics
I was reminiscing just the other day While having coffee all alone, and Lord, it took me away Back to a first glance feeling on New York time Back when you fit my poems like a perfect rhyme
The first verse includes drinking coffee alone, coffee being a theme. Here Taylor drinks coffee alone, similar to Is it over now? “let's fast forward to 300 takeout coffees later" it is post-break up. This is in the original lyrics, but separated by distance.
The second half remembers a brief meeting and includes that Taylor and her muse travel a lot and share a love of poetry and rhyme.
The original lyrics differ here, importantly "back when" is missing, the relationship was still current and Taylor felt completed by the person. It was "Back to the first glance feeling on new time, you were the last word filling out the end of the rhyme"
Took off faster than a green light, go Yeah, you skip the conversation when you already know I left a note on the door with a joke we'd made And that was the first day
This second verse hits themes in Haylor songs of how quickly they fit:
Lover "Have I known you for 20 seconds or 20 Years"
Labyrinth "Never trust it if it rises fast / It can't last"
Message In A Bottle: But time moves faster, replaying your laughter, disaster
You Are In Love: Time moved too fast, you play it back
Coney Island: The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go
Also skipping conversation is a theme of not communicating
The note on the door is visualised as a piece of paper on a hotel door in the lyric video. It reminds me of The Very First Night's "Didn't read the note on the Polaroid picture". This lyric also reminds me of Begin Again "I think it's strange that you think I'm funny, 'cause He never did"
And darling, it was good Never looking down And right there where we stood Was holy ground
The Chorus is the end of the February 2012 lyrics. "Holy" ground has always confused me, but I think the clue is in the secret message, it was "Saint" Denis.
Down is in a lot of songs, this is just some:
Come Back... Be Here "And now that I can put this down"
IKYWT "'Til you put me down, oh"
Style "And when we go crashing down, we come back every time"
IWYW "We're a crooked love in a straight line down"
Wonderland "Took a wrong turn and we / Fell down a rabbit hole."
Spinning like a girl in a brand new dress We had this big wide city all to ourselves We blocked the noise with the sound of 'I need you' And for the first time I had something to lose
tee hee Dress: "Only bought this dress so you could take it off"
Question…?: Good girl, sad boy, big city, wrong choices
Need is in:
Come Back… Be Here: I guess you’re in New York today, I don’t wanna need you this way
This Love: When you’re young you just run but you come back to what you need
New Romantics: We need love, but all we want is danger
End Game: I’m one call away whenever you need me
Don’t Blame Me: Shaking, pacing, I just need you
Need "Oh, It's a need, it's a need I would go anywhere that you lead"
And I guess we fell apart in the usual way And the story's got dust on every page But sometimes I wonder how you think about it now And I see your face in every crowd
This verse is clear the relationship has ended, but was added after February 2012. Fell apart is also in:
The Very First Night: Back then we didn’t know we were built to fall apart
Out Of The Woods: "We were built to fall apart, then fall back together"
Taylor has also made the story/page reference is a theme in many songs
New Year’s Day: "Don’t read the last page, but I stay"
Death By A Thousand Cuts: "But if the story’s over, why am I still writing pages?"
Paris: "Privacy sign on the door and on my page and on the whole world"
Tonight I'm gonna dance For all that we've been through But I don't wanna dance If I'm not dancing with you
There is a lot of dancing in Haylor songs:
22: Everything will be all right if we just keep dancing like we’re 22
The Very First Night: Danced in the kitchen, chased me down through the hallway
Out Of The Woods: To move the furniture so we could dance, baby, like we stood a chance
You Are In Love: You two are dancing in a snow globe 'round and 'round
Dancing With Our Hands Tied: If I could dance with you again
Cardigan: I knew you, dancing in your Levi’s, drunk under a streetlight
Cowboy Like Me: And you asked me to dance, but I said, “Dancing is a dangerous game”
Maroon: And I chose you, the one I was dancing with in New York, no shoes
Glitch: I thought we had no chance and that’s romance, let’s dance
and bonus Dancing, after this she learned to Dance alone:
Shake It Off: I’m dancing on my own, I make the moves up as I go
New Romantics: We are too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet

loved this scene in the 6th episode (right). When Valjean was going through the sewers, he kept hearing what a bad person he was in his head. And he kept going only to be stopped by iron bars he couldn't unlock nor move, feeling trapped and as if he was back behind the bars. The only thing he could do was to stretch out his hand, like he did countless times in the bagne (left)...
and his exhaustion and belief that he was bad (and all his flashbacks and general "I am not worthy and deserving" feelings) made it so easy to surrender when Javert appeared. Now Javert would take care of Marius, Javert would take him away. Cosette would be happy without him, she doesn't love him anymore.
And then Javert left. There was a sense of certainty in Javert, and he left and didn't take Valjean with him. His desperate cries for "Javert" in the empty street make so much sense for this Valjean. He wanted to be taken away.
Until Cosette's wedding, Valjean went through motions. He denounced himself to Marius as a form of punishment. And then he sentenced himself to leave Paris, to go and live in Digne (serving as his prison where the ghost of the bishop would guard him), cutting his hair short because he needed that reminder that he was a criminal. That he should be in prison.
#jean valjean#les miserables bbc#les miserables#i just like bbc!valjean a lot 🥺#the book is the book. the bbc 'verse is the bbc 'verse#so if you feel like telling me but actually in the book pls don't#you know when 2000!valjean calls out for 'javert' it's more like thx for catering to me than a sensible choice that makes sense#but in bbc it is a logical conclusion and why i think him falling down on his knees in that scene would also work#even though it would be perhaps a bit exaggerated#but like i said before it would please me lol

was taking some notes down on my copy of T3M last night, and was reminded that book!Aramis canonically writes poetry, so now I will be thinking of bbc!Aramis doing the same.
Some headcanons about it:
He started writing poems for Isabel when they were sappy horny teens in love. He'd write the sappiest, most flowery and romantic verses to her and recite them to her while they lay in his father's sprawling gardens in a field of flowers.
He stopped for a few years, after Isabel was taken away (as he thought) and he ran away from home, because it hurt too much to try. He started again a few months after meeting Porthos.
He wrote short verses for Porthos but never really showed them to him. Porthos found out accidentally and thought it was about one of Aramis' mistresses, which Aramis didn't correct because he was embarrassed.
He doesn't actually write poetry for his mistresses. Not even for Adele. He may quote poetry to them (Shakespeare for example) but he only writes his own about the people closest to his heart (Porthos and Athos, and later Anne). He's wrote a platonic one for Constance too! She keeps it tucked inside her favourite book.
He's super shy about reciting any of them out loud, or even showing them to the individual they're meant for (except Constance, because with her it wasn't romantic, so he felt way more comfortable).
He has an entire notebook filled with the most romantic, heart-aching, pining poems about Anne. He shows her only after he becomes First Minister, because he really thought those where the things he'd never be allowed to tell her.
Waxes poetic when he's drunk, and out of the four Inseparables, he has the lowest alcohol tolerance (yes, even lower than little d'Artagnan!), so it's... a spectacle.
#the musketeers#bbc musketeers#aramis#rene d'herblay#athos#porthos#d'artagnan#constance bonacieux#anne of austria#annamis#athamis#portamis#i should probably just write fics instead of spewing headcanons out into the void but. shhhh

KAR ASTER’S RP PLOTTING CHEAT-SHEET
Want new-and-exciting plots for your character? Long to reach out to more of your followers, but don’t know where to start? Fear not! Fill out this form and give your RP partners both present and future all the of juicy jumping off points they need to help you get your characters acquainted. Be sure to tag the players whose characters YOU want more cues to interact with, and repost, don’t reblog! Feel free to add or remove sections as you see fit. Template here.
Mun name: Kar, Karmun, or if prefer to separate mun from muse, use my middle name, Asher.
OOC Contact: Here, or on @stellevatum or @karthonic or discord on request.
Who the heck is my muse anyway:
Main Verse: She's a Primordial god of destruction that got reborn as the abomination child of Hecate; raised by Jewish lesbians in 90s NYC after the BPRD found her in a sarcophagus. She is constantly fighting against her inherent Ogdru Hem nature of destroying all reality, and just bein being a regular person. Inherited her mom's position as Queen of the Crossroads a few years back and juggles that and BPRD duties.
Points of interest:
Resting bitch face ahoy, and if she's not wearing her glasses (which assume for the most part she is), her eyes. She also has fangs which are more obvious when talking or smiling. Supernatural muses may feel free to 'sense' an odd or unsettling aura around her.
What they’ve been up to recently:
Main timeline: rebuilding the BPRD, lobbying for more supernatural rights, outreach and opening dialogue between the worlds for at least tolerable co-habitation. Guest Lecturing at colleges. Possibly writing a book on early bronze age cultures, and in talks on hosting a doc for BBC.
Where to find them:
New York, Fairfield (BPRD Headquarters) mainly, but her job(s) take her everywhere. Her family house in Limbo/Erebus and sometimes bothering the Hadean court. (Their Wifi sucks though.)
Current plans:
Not really? Just remade her blog to in-character shitpost, but if wills want more plotted stuff I'm down but I'm keeping it very chill here.
Desired interactions:
Cracky, fun, casual with little high stakes stuff at the moment is ideal. But more planned out stuff is possible. Bureau Shenanigans (Like The Office/WWDITS) style shit that's a little weird, crazy, but slice of life because that's life at the BPRD, especially HB/Kar sibling shenanigans. (But it doesn't have to be!) Fellow Chthonics/Gods just being regular jagoffs in the mortal realm is a vibe I like. (Example: Like her and other Psychopomps having a group chat to settle who's covering what that night, etc. Dropping memes or whatnot.). May open her up to ship again but not sure yet. Just started and haven't vibed enough yet and I'm not assuming any of my old partners are interested in picking things back up.
Offered interactions:
Archaeologist by training, can do expeditions or research. BPRD Agent/Director, can be involved in investigating the paranormal & supernatural and arbitrating on it. She's a goddess of the underworld, envoy of the Fates, etc etc, so dealing with the dead, dying, and politics of the other underworlds. So you can play into that. Or just hit me up I can tool something!

Through a Glass, Darkly by Calais Reno
Chapter 2: Mr Smith and Dr Jones
Sherlock and John (BBC) / 1891 (ACD-verse) : Finding themselves in some version of Victorian London, with Sherlock wounded, John does his best to figure things out.
Opening an unattended newspaper he finds on a bench tells him that the date is 26 January, 1891, but this isn’t the information that makes him stop in his tracks, forcing other pedestrians to mutter insults and go around him.
The front page displays two sketched portraits. The headline reads: "Holmes and Watson At Large. Police Seek Help from Public."
Tagging: If I've missed your request, or you wish not to be tagged, please let me know! Thank you for reading and reblogging!
