Finished episode two of Band of Brothers rewatch. - it's very long I'm sorry.
Damn, I love watching this now because I can actually focus on the show and not trying to keep track of everyone lol. Anyway. Thoughts
-firstly the jumping scene with the C-47s is intense! Bringing in my B-17 knowledge- flak is so terrifying and these poor paratroopers are getting a first hand idea of it, and not being able to do anything- just pray, hope, and then jump straight into that- like geez. That's what fucked up the bomber crews so bad mentally- like honestly, I don't blame the pilot for pressing the button early after his co-pilot just dies. And the scene where Meehan's plane blows up and you realize these guys were just ready to leave....
-other notes: fun time spotting all the notable characters. Toye crossing himself, Guarnere with rosary?? I think its him? Malarky trying to smoke, I think, but failing- you really just feel the chaos and tension, especially when everyone's being jolted around w/flak. Also Dick being right by the open door of a plane thousands of feet in the air gives me anxiety- like yes, he's supposed to be there, he's jumping out, there's flak, but damn, that is not safe.
-Also RIP Hall. Poor guy. I do find it funny that he's like, what the hell is Guarnere's problem- gets 1) gonoherrea but apparently it's only his nickname, and 2) Toye, Malarky etc just being, well yes he's being an asshole, but you gotta see, you gotta give it back, oh he just lost his brother you see- he's not really an asshole. And then Hall does give it back, and Guarnere is like, I respect you now.
-Also nice detail here- when they're at Brecourt Manor, and Joe punches that surrendered German soldier, you see that he has brass knuckles on- which means sometime between ranting about his gear and jumping off the plane, he got knuckles. There's a story there, I feel.
-Guarnere and Dick- interesting scene with the horse. Guarnere really comes off as a 'natural killer'. This is a mad man, and one who really, really wants to get revenge. It's a very intense scene, and yeah, I certainly understand why Dick was pissed- like yes, revenge, but also, thank you for potentially alerting us to every german soldier in the vicinity of which there are many. Also love the height comparison- Guarnere looks so much smaller than Dick (guess that's the actors, wonder if the real guys were similar heights) but it does make the scene funny in a way where Dick is chewing out him out.
-Dick scene with men in the truck bed- again, Dick is such a reserved, disciplined, controlled guy- and he's a petty ass, and Damian Lewis serves it with his chat to Guarnere in that truck. It's very subtle, but when Guarnere asks if Dick is their co now, Dick is like, yes, I am, look at that- and oh yes, I overheard you talking about me, just going to throw that in there. It does feel a little smug because Guarnere has to respect him now, and Dick isn't very obvious about it, but he is a little smug. Again, Lewis's performance is very good and very subtle which seems to fit what I have learned about the real Winters's personality.
-also Malarkey you fucking idiot- love that he admitted that this was the dumbest thing he ever did, and then tried to downplay with, oh everyone wants a luger- apparently the actor wasn't acting because the explosives were going off too early and dude was really freaked out lol.
-Also love the comparison between Buck (his eyes are so blue, like lazer beams I swear) hanging out with the men, and Dick, popping in real quick and then just going alone- it really shows their different leadership styles as officers- and shout out to Nix for checking on his bro! The way he throws away the can feels so personal tho haha. Also I really like how Dick has A Moment where you can just see him processing everything by himself- they were victorious, but the tone of the end of the episode doesn't really feel that way which is a really interesting choice and I'm kinda down with it.
-Nixon coming in with the tanks- I need a story here. There's one and I need to know.
-Spiers killing the prisoners is just a shocking moment to all the Easy guys- come over to the Pacific however and the Army/Marines have just stopped giving a fuck meanwhile. Like wounded IJA guys have grenades, I ain't risking that shit. Digging teeth out of not-quite dead guys? Yeah sure. I just find that funny for some reason- the weight placed on this, is mainly legit just European Theater stuff to my knowledge. Dunno why- just funny- also spiers was way more in this episode then I remembered.
-Malarkey talking to the Oregon Nazi- love how dude is like, I was answering the call of the fatherland or something ominous like that, and Malarkey legit is just like, Okay weird- MOVING ON WHAT FACTORY DID YOU WORK AT- SMALL WORLD WILD-
-Lastly- MVP TO THE TWO DUDES FROM THE 82ND! They come across these guys from the 81st, in very tense situation, behind enemy lines, unsure of where they are- and the officer just unzips his pants in the little battle huddle like wtf- I wish I could make gifs because these dude's expressions are hilarious. One dude is like wtf, and the other guy vacillates from shocked to what I can only call the equivalent of "I mean..." dude. why you smiling like that. why does the camera focus on Dick's fly. Why. you didn't need to do that. and why does he keep his flashlight there? I know there's a reason, I just want to know (is this why Smokey Gorden makes the compass dick joke) @bleedingcoffee42. And no one from Easy seems to care which is even funnier. Then these guys have to watch Guarnere being a bit unhinged- having drama with Dick- would love to know their thoughts on this, I need a fanfic featuring 82nd Rosencratz and Guildenstern. Also why is the sunrise after this event so cinematic- it feels a bit WW1 ish and also deserves a painting honestly.
Anyway. That's it I think. It's a very long rant, thank you for sticking to it if you made it this far. There's a lot in this episode. Would LOVE to hear other's thoughts on this episode! Any things i missed. And for those who can make gifs- PLEASE check out the 82nd guys and Dick's fly scene. It's too good. One of them gets named, but I don't remember who he was sadly.
#band of brothers#bill guarnere#ron spiers#john hall#smokey gordon#don malarkey#the pacific#because it is mentioned- interesting comparison#lewis nixon#joe toye#MVP 82nd dudes#the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of this episode truly#richard winters#hbo war#buck compton

GRAVITY BALLS TWERK-OFF COMPETITION
Competitors: Stanley VS Stanford (post Gravity Falls)
Prize: A supportive father figure
Judges:
Tyler Cutebiker
Shandra Jimenez
Whatever this fucking gnome is called again
Additional details:
~They both have a week to hone their craft and choreograph their routine
~They will be judged on the skill they showcase and the risk they put into their twerk-off
~The judges will each give a score out of 1 to 10 based on the performance
~The highest score wins
WHO WOULD WIN?
#gravity falls#stanford pines#stanley pines#poll#one thing I'll mention here is that neither of them realise until the competition is over is that if either of them wins#they will both have a supportive father figure as they're brothers#so if this were in a gravity falls episode the lesson would be that everyone is a winner in the end of the day#also Bill Cipher orchestrated the whole competition and with heavy debate with his henchmaniacs he ended up not being a judge as he would#be way too biased for this role (he is seething and coping)

One thing about being an artist they never really does fanart is I’ll post said fanart and get a bunch of people who I drew their blorbo and it’s like “omg I didn’t know you liked this show!!!! Ahhh it’s my favorite!!” Like brother I have this media tattooed on my body. I was a fan of this before you were even conceived. I own you.
#surprising number of people surprised I like bill cipher#I was THERE. I WAS THERE.#postings#I think being competitive abt media you like is fucking stupid#but there’s been a weird number of times 13 year old gravity falls fans try to talk down to me like brother#I lived and breathed that fandom when it was actively putting out new episodes. I’m not a poser I’m not a poser I’m not a poser I’m not

No One: People in the Gravity Falls fandom on twitter at any chance for some fucking reason: *trying to revive hating a literal 12 year old child, aka Mabel*
#someone tweeted how the show did a good job aganst toxic standards for men in the maniess episode#which...yeah its a good episode when you look at it like that#but of course someone had to go 'but mabel was mean to her brother-'#dear god they siblings THEY TEASE dipper in show is shown to give as badly as he took#let alone conviently ignoring uh stan the grown ass man and the whole town teased and laughed at dipper as well#like mabels at least 12 whats stan and the town adults excuse#and someone saying 'dippers 12 and hes mature-' the day we stop having standards for all kids to be the same...#plus 'mabels the true villain of the show' okay pack it up time#you did not just again conviently ignore a male character bill this time to claim that

'Gideon's mom is carla mccorkle' was always a dumb theory because there's no way the gravity falls writers would put that much focus on a female character
#random thoughts#gravity falls#literally every narrative surrounding a female character revolved around romance except mabel who was based on hirsch's sister#and pacifica who was explicitly designed to be mabel's antithesis#and even then there's hints that pacifica and dipper will end up together#and mabel's primary characterization - literally the thing they introduce her with - is her boy crazy phase#'we tried to do a wendy episode but it never worked out' yeah it's because she's literally just cool that's her entire characterization#there is ONE explicitly female demon in bill's crew and she's pink and voluptuous when her inspo was bill's BLUE flames#giffany was programmed to pursue love at all costs and was murdered for it (only retconned in the books)#literally how many of the monsters of the week were female huh? HUH? FUCKING THREE#TWO OF WHICH WERE MOTIVATED BY ROMANCE#darlene is literally a black widow#literally the only reoccuring background character whose name we know and is a woman is lazy susan#candy and grenda were NERFED in the finale to make mabel's arc about abandonment make more sense#WE DON'T EVEN KNOW ABUELITA'S NAME BUT WE KNOW SOOS'S COUSIN'S NAME??? FUCKING REGGIE GETS A NAME BUT NOT ABUELITA#how does wendy feel about her mom? does she have any hobbies? what are her plans for after high school? does she HAVE any plans?#why does no one have any sisters besides dipper. i am including mermando in this. why does literally everyone have brothers and no sisters#fuck i forgot about the unicorn. that makes four i guess? and shandra jiminez

14.52 Big Brother
Vicky’s first episode! I’ve been hanging out for her arrival and she is even more staggeringly beautiful than I remembered. I’ve never liked Mike and he’s particularly awful here (and in the follow-up episode). The complete refusal to listen to Vicky is bad enough, but he just dismisses Bob as well, because Mike Knows Best. Knows best how to be an utter dick, perhaps.
The stuff about Matthew being into Vicky and her not being into him is fun to have in her first episode, given what happens later.

not to be a kathleen defender but I love her character and feel as if she fills the role game!bill did but to an extreme. her brother was her person, her sarah, her ellie, her sam, her frank and she lost him. grief shut her down and made her apathetic. she even admitted that her brother wanted her to forgive the man who was responsible for his death but she couldn't do that because she was the one who had to live while he died, had to be weighed down with loss, and she was never the "beautiful" one, that was her brother. kathleen is a warning/ symbol of what can happen in the worst way when your purpose dies
#the last of us#text#mackenzie speaks#im late to the party but sue me for wanting to stay on schedule and i had a feeling this episode was going to be a rough one#i will not say that kathleen was right in her decisions but she is a complex antagonist#she made dumb choices morally and logically but it was very human in the worst ways#i will say henry also fits the bill in terms of the whole bill/frank joel/ellie kathlee/her brother trend

I fratelli Karamazov 1969 [EP1] - Dmitrij & Grušen'ka + misc.
So, I’m doing this. The fact that this drama is so little known breaks my heart, so I feel the need to share what little I can with you all - also because it’s making me crazy and I need to share this insanity, too.
part one (you are here!) | part two | part three
Some sparse notes before I leave this first short transcript under the cut: 1. I am not a professional translator, just an amateur, and my english has been mostly self taught, so you might find some imperfections in the adaptation-- don’t be shy and let me know, I do love to learn new language related things <3; 2. I picked these short scenes because I had never attempted a translation of this magnitude, mostly I just transposed my own writing which is a whole other thing, and I wanted to flex my muscles before doing anything longer and more complex-- for example, if this goes well I’d like to try my hand at the Ivan & Smerdjakov dressing scene or do the whole Great Inquisitor; 3. I tried to translate the closest to the original script as I could -- I say script but, well, I had to do my own transcripts because I can’t find even italian subs -- to mantain the same feeling, again if you want to shoot me a message to discuss choices I would love to talk about it! :); 4. I put timestamps and some very basic and bare stage directions if you just wish to read the script and not follow along with the drama, but I wholeheartedly suggest that you do because the acting is the icing on the cake that makes this adaptation so great; 5. you’ll notice I’m using a different spelling for the names as the common american english one, it is the one I’m most used to and what my translation of The Brothers Karamazov uses, so I decided to keep it-- for my sanity’s sake; 6. there will never exist enough words to express how pissed I am that english doesn’t have a formal you pronoun.
A propos of actors! In these scenes you’ll find: Corrado Pani as Dmitrij Karamazov, Lea Massari as Grušen’ka, Franca Mazzoni as Dmitrij’s housekeeper and Giovanna Galletti as Fenja.
Original script by Diego Fabbri, directed by Sandro Bolchi.
You can follow along with the drama here on YT or here on RaiPlay. The quality is shaky in any case, but I suggest you use RaiPlay (it does as you to make an account but is otherwise free-- and you can just link it to your Google account. It’s also the official source for the drama) as the YT bootlegs I’ve seen have the audio going out of sync after a while.
Now, before we get to the transcripts (under the cut), behold my humor (and why this drama’s so great and why Lea Massari as Grušen’ka owns my entire ass):
[INT. – AT DMITRIJ’S] min. 1:04
(knocking noises; Dmitrij is laying on the bed reading a newspaper)
Dmitrij: Come in! (more knocking noises) – I said, “Come in”!
Housekeeper (enters, carrying an envelope): It’s for you, Dmitrij Fëdorovič (reading the name on the envelope) – Dmitrij Fëdorovič Karamazov.
Dmitrij: Leave it there.
Housekeeper: Where?
Dmitrij: Wherever you like.
Housekeeper: Look, Dmitrij Fëdorovič, I’m leaving it here – it might be important, the man who brought it said, “The sooner he’ll come, the better will be for him.”
Dmitrij: Who said it was important?
Housekeeper: It was a bearded man, he gave me this and left with that warning.
*
[INT. – AT GRUŠEN’KA’S/FOYER ROOM] min. 1:50
Fenja (to Dmitrij): You must wait, Miss Agrafena Alexandrovna is busy; you might sit down in the meantime.
(to Captain Snergirëv, who just entered) You’re already done, Captain? (he gives a court nod to Dmitrij and leaves without saying anything)
(to Dmitrij, who is barging into Grušen’ka’s study) – hey you! Wait a moment, just a moment!
[INT. – AT GRUŠEN’KA’S/STUDY ROOM] min. 2:12
Dmitrij (enters): Was it you who had me summoned?
Grušen’ka (looks up from her papers): Who are you?
Dmitrij: You don’t know me? I’m Dmitrij Karamazov, I came to–
Grušen’ka: You are Dmitrij Karamazov – well, I have some promissory notes in your name given to me by your father to collect. We’re working together, Fëdor Pavlovič and I, you didn’t know?
Dmitrij: But I don’t owe one ruble to my father – not one ruble! When I was a military officer he lent me money stealing from the inheritance my mother left me… and pretended I signed promissory notes… this is new, eh, Agrafena Alexandrovna? Theft secured by promissory note, a dirty swindle of which I am the victim.
Grušen’ka: Your father knows how to deal in other people’s money like few others.
Dmitrij: It is a sad family story and the protagonist is him – Fëdor Pavlovič! My father! They say you know him well, very well.
Grušen’ka: Your father is greedy, greedy for anything.
Dmitrij: For you, too? – Be careful, he’s a Karamazov, damned even by demons, his soul is stained – me, I’m not a son to him, I’m a dog who hunts in dark hallways, hissing “The law will be on my side, only a judge may decide, the money is mine!”, and so the buffoon makes me look like the perpetrator.
Grušen’ka: The role of the victim doesn’t suit you very much but – you too, I don’t know how to say it, you seem obsessed by something, too.
Dmitrij: I’m a Karamazov too, why should the worms that are corrupting my father spare me instead? (rubs his forehead nervously, sits down on the couch) – I’ve known you for such a short time and already I’m confessing myself, this bothers me, why do I speak to you with such brutality?
Grušen’ka: Because you’re a savage (laughs) – as I am, after all! I’m a peasant, Dmitrij Fëdorovič, eh, don’t be formal with me. Mah, maybe you’re wrong, but maybe you’re right, too, I don’t know; anyway here are your promissory notes, take them, I’m not interested in them anymore.
Dmitrij: No – they belong to the old man, they must be deducted from what he still owes me, return them to him! Thank you… thank you Agrafena Alexandrovna.
Grušen’ka: Call me Grušen’ka – and don’t believe too much in my kindness, no, I can be very greedy too: you see, those who spent a childhood in misery as I have cannot be very soft; they might feel something else, though, another thing…
Dmitrij: –pity?
Grušen’ka: Oh, savages like you are cannot inspire pity – anger, maybe… or–
Dmitrij: –or?
Grušen’ka (calling out): Some tea, Fenja, bring us some tea.
#ok last note abt the translation then i swear i'll be done: the way i translated 'cambiale'#premise is i don't know what word the use in the english tbk i don't have a copy#so i checked google and a dictionary#google gives me both 'bill of exchange' and 'promissory note' the dictionary only the first#so i'm left to my own devices steaming in possibilities (given also that my dictionary is a shitty pocket one)#i decide that for the context promissory note reads a bit better as one 'i'll pay' note -- and works better with dmitrij's line#'theft secured by promissory note'#-- so if that was among the things you were weirded out about how they were translated. here's my tldr explaination#also expect some more random notes about the other episodes bcs i watched more and ofc have THOUGHTS#the brothers karamazov#i fratelli karamazov#mitya karamazov#grushenka#dmitri karamazov#sam.exe
