I loved the new update to the Addams Family game. This part features the villain from the animated movies and everyone wearing mazurka costumes. Except the girls. Wednesday has a crow costume and throws crows at the goblins! I want to see something like that in the series. Wednesday being able to communicate with crows like Eugene does with bees 🐝
My cousin is great at embroidery and I asked her to embroider the Wenclair window for me. It turned out beautifully 💖 I have a little Wednesday Funko, so this year I want Enid to leave her next to Wednesday ❤️❤️

The Nightingale Family-DC x DP prompt
(Shameless Addams family inspired prompt)
News travels fast in Gotham, especially in affluent circles. A new family has arrived in the city, old money at that. They had taken up residents in the old mansion overlooking the Historic Gotham Graveyard.
The Nightingales had a way of letting their presence be known. They were rarely seen in public. The eldest Jasmine Nightingale however had made waves working at the Gotham Asylum as a psychologist. She was often escorted by her younger brother Dan Nightingale. The public really started talking when Jazz was seen talking with Harley Quinn.
There were two children that lived in the Nightingale manor. They were elusive to say the least as the family didn't attend the parties of Gotham.
It wasn't until Damian Wayne got an invite from his classmate Danielle to visit their manor that someone saw the lives of Nightingales. This invite had been received after Damian carefully befriended the youngest Nightingale to investigate their connections.
That's how the Waynes ended up at a dinner party.
The manor was bleak to say the least and that's saying something in Gotham. The buildingbwas made from black stones and gargoyles perched on the roof. The garden was wilted and full of thrones that crept up the walls.
Bruce felt a sense of Deja vu as he approached the door and rang the bell. Tower bells rang out as the face of Jasmine Nightingale appeared. She was dressed in black dress pants and blazer. Her lips were painted to match. Her red hair had a striking white streak through it which had become a fashion trend since the family's arrival to girls wanting to seem mysterious.
"Good Evening. It is so nice to meet the infamous Waynes." She shook Bruce's hand. Behind her, the sounds of clanking metal was heard. "That is just my younger siblings playing. You don't you boys join while I talk to your father.
Despite only being a fresh-faced 20 year old Jazz carried herself like a confident adult. A certified genius in psychology who graduated early she also handled the inmates at the Asylum well enough that escapes are at an all time low.
"She's got it all" was what Harley said.
Bruce's admiration of the young lady was only matched by his suspicion. The house the Nightingales lived y had once belonged to the Al Ghouls. There was no telling yet if there was a connection.
He took a seat in the living room with Jazz tea already prepared. She poured two cups of black tea. Not black as in the type of tea but the color of the drink. Bruce cautiously sniffed the black liquid, it smelled earthy and acidic. Poison.
"Do you like it? I made it myself. I added the belladonna myself. It has a sweet taste so you don't need sugar. The kids have sweet tooths but we avoid added sugars. They love nightshade." She smiled drinking.
Bruce put the cup down. So they drink poison at a young age. They must be part of The League of Assassins. But why are they here?
"If you don't mind me asking. Why did you move to Gotham? Your parents-" Jazz put a hand up as she finished her cup.
"Mr. Wayne I'm sure you are no stranger to parents leaving before their time nor the concept that not all parents deserve children. Now I can't confirm or deny if that is the case for use but you can understand that it's a private matter." Jazz said sternly.
That wasn't an answer.
Upstairs Danny and Danielle played with Elle's new toys. Swords from Dan's trip to Portugal. He even sharpened them. They were currently tearing through the mansion.
Tim and Damian caught them while Danny had successfully pinned Elle to the ground.
"Dami! Help!" Elle yelled catching Danny off guard as Damian tackled Danny to the ground.
"Alright, alright. You can go next." Danny rolling Damian off him and passing him the sword. "Im taking a break."
Danny loved playing with his little sister but baby games are tiring.
"They let you play with swords," Tim exclaimed. This wasn't something he expected, sure it was normal for Damian but Damian is weird and was raised by assassins. Damian didn't do it for fun, it was training.
Damian and Danielle ran off while fencing.
"You must be one of the Waynes. Elle has been excited to have your brother over." Danny said politely if not a bit dismissive.
"Eh, yeah. Your sister said we should join you." Tim said a bit awkward. " You have another brother right?"
"Oh, yeah. He travels alot but he's relaxing right now. He's probably swimming." Danny shrugged.
Tim had heard of Danny. They went to the same school but Danny was part of a program that allowed him to come to school when he felt like it. The program is for young engineers who want to work for Wayne Industries. He mostly worked on small experimental projects. So far Danny's superconductor tech was revolutionary but impossible to replicate. Danny somehow managed to make a more effective coolant than anything they had created in the lab.
"You have a pool?" Tim knew that the mansion didn't have a pool.
"Of water? No." Danny shrugged but gave no further answer.
"I see, so what do you do?" Tim tried to sound normal like he was talking to his friends and not someone he was trying to probe.
"Anything, everything. I was going to recalibrate my telescope but I have a laser to test." Danny walked off expecting Tim to follow.
Testing was just cut a bunch of things in half. Tim got some great info on making an explosive ice canister and foam bombs. Tim made sure to get his number to hire him to make some gear for him.
The Nightingale kids were absolutely lawless. They destroyed everything in their path.
Elle had dragged Damian to her room to show off her toys. She used to travel with Dan until she started school. She picked up a bunch of items. Cult artifacts, shrunken heads, voodoo dolls, cursed puppets, knives, swords, and the homemade taxidermy Elle made from roadkill. She also had a pet dodo bird named Ernesto who had a bed next to her bed. Ernesto took a liking to Damian and sat on his head. The way he shows his affection
Soon enough Dan came upstairs to check on Elle and Danny.
"You kids, need to get ready for dinner. Sharpen your nails and teeth." He said before going back to the kitchen.
"What does that mean?" Damian asked.
"You don't sharpen your nails. Well good luck at dinner." Elle said bemused.
Dinner was...horrifying. Watching the family chat happily as they ripped apart the moving food as it came to life. Damian was actually excited as he skewered the cheese and broccoli casserole that screamed at him.
"Father, why can't we do this at our home?" He asked.

It may not be as mysterious or spooky as the Addams family mansion or the Munster's house, but it can go into deep space, so I'd rather live on the Jupiter 2.

In a alternate universe somewhere Charles Xavier meets a man named Fester while he is sent as a little kid to the psych ward by his mother, whose mind is as insane as everyone inside the building but it’s paradoxically the calmest and most fascinating mind he has ever felt in his short life and he learns that he man is there ON VACATION of all things and he realizes that “no I’m not insane the voices are other people’s thoughts” way quicker with Fester’s help and he is kidnapped/adopted into the Addams clan where he and his telepathy flourishes

A Dark Wedding of Misery
Pairing: Wednesday x Male Reader
Summary: They said you two would never make it this far but you did. Y/N and Wednesday Addams are getting married. From Nevermore Academy to the Alter
WordCount: 1.3k words
WARNINGS: Kissing
The moon hung low in the midnight sky, casting an ethereal glow over the sprawling grounds of the Addams mansion. It was a night of foreboding, yet one tinged with an unusual excitement. Wednesday Addams, the somber and enigmatic daughter of the Addams family, was on the precipice of a life-altering event—an unholy matrimony that would defy the boundaries of the living and the dead.
The mansion, with its ivy-clad walls and twisted spires, exuded an otherworldly charm as Morticia, the epitome of Gothic elegance, supervised the final touches of her daughter's wedding gown. The dress, a masterpiece of darkness and grace, clung to Wednesday like a second skin, its midnight-black fabric cascading around her like a shroud.
"I will need some more black ash for the rest of your dress, Possibly your grandmothers would suffice. I shall return" Morticia says as he scurries out the room.
Wednesday scoots herself over to the dusty mirror in the Library that the family turned into a fitting room for the occasion. She looked at the black dress and felt it unsettling that her time was coming.
Wednesday looked at THING who was working on some dead flower arrangements and for the bridesmaids to hand out to them later.
"Thing" she called to him
Thing stopped his task and moved his hand body in her direction
"Find Enid, I wish to speak to her" Wednesday requested
Thing saluted and scurried off.
Wednesday waited for a few moments and then went towards the door and checked if the coast was clear. She picked up her black dress and began to run down the eerie hallways of the Addams Mansion towards the other wing.
_____________________________________
In a distant wing of the Addams mansion, where shadows played upon the walls like phantoms in the night, Y/N prepared for the unholy union. The air hung heavy with a sense of anticipation, and the dimly lit room seemed to echo with the echoes of centuries past.
Y/N, adorned in a suit as black as the void itself, stood before the ornate mirror. His hands trembled ever so slightly as he adjusted his tie, and his eyes, a mix of excitement and nervousness, reflected in the polished glass.
Ajax Petropolus, a towering figure with a beanie on his head stood behind Y/N checking themselves to make sure they looked good. He observed Y/N with a subtle nod, understanding the gravity of the moment. Eugene Ottinger, with his mop of unruly hair and penchant for the bizarre, fidgeted with the boutonnière, offering a lopsided grin. Beside them, Xavier Thorpe, with his piercing gaze and enigmatic aura, stood as the voice of reason.
Ajax: (In his deep, resonant voice) You'll do just fine, Y/N. It's not every day you get to marry into the Addams clan.
Eugene: (With a mischievous smirk) Remember, weddings are just like funerals, only with better food!
Xavier: (In his calm, soothing tone) Relax, Y/N. Tonight is a celebration of the unusual, and you, my friend, are stepping into a realm where the extraordinary is the norm.
As the trio provided reassurance and prepared Y/N for his impending union with Wednesday, the mansion's eerie silence served as a stark contrast to the bustling emotions within.
Once the boys left, Y/N stood alone in the room, the weight of the moment settling upon him like a heavy shroud. He looked at his reflection, contemplating the path that had led him to this peculiar crossroads.
As he ran his fingers through his hair, a knock echoed through the room. Y/N turned, expecting one of the boys to return with some last-minute advice. However, when he opened the door, there stood Wednesday—a vision of darkness and mystery and soon Y/N Wife.
Wednesday: (Expressionless) Y/N, the time is nigh.
Y/N: (Nervously) Yea it is, Wednesday. The boys were just helping me gather my composure.
Wednesday: (Observing him) Composure is overrated.
Without another word, Wednesday took Y/N's hand, leading him through the labyrinthine corridors of the mansion. The moonlit hallway cast an eerie glow as they approached the entrance to the backyard—a gateway to the dark forest that concealed secrets untold.
--------------------------------------
The forest, with its twisted branches and shadowy depths, beckoned them into its enigmatic embrace. The rustling leaves and the distant hooting of an owl added to the mystical ambiance as Wednesday and Y/N ventured into the heart of the darkness.
Wednesday: (Stopping at the forest's edge) We stand on the precipice of eternity, Y/N. Tonight, we embark on a journey that transcends the mortal coil.
Y/N: (Nervously) Yes, Wednesday. I…
Wednesday: (Interrupting) Nervousness becomes you, Y/N. It is an emotion as genuine as the shadows that cloak our existence.
Y/N's gaze met Wednesday's, and in that moment, the moonlight revealed a vulnerability beneath her stoic exterior—a vulnerability mirrored in Y/N's own eyes.
Y/N: (Softly) I never thought I'd find someone as extraordinary as you.
Wednesday: (Expressionless) Extraordinary is subjective. Tonight, we become a tapestry of darkness and peculiarity, woven together in the moonlit dance of fate.....But I'm content that I've met you
Y/N, captivated by the haunting beauty of the dress, stood in awe of the enigmatic figure before him. The moonlight played upon the black fabric, casting an ethereal glow that accentuated the mysterious allure of Wednesday's presence.
Y/N: (Breathless) Wednesday, you're… breathtaking.
Wednesday: (Expressionless) Brevity suits the moment.
As those words hung in the air, Wednesday reached for Y/N's face with a gentle grace that belied her typically stoic demeanor. Her cool fingers traced a delicate path along his jawline, an intimate touch that transcended the shadows around them. In the dim moonlight, her left hand emerged, adorned with a striking black obsidian ring—a gem as dark as the night sky.
The ring, an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, held an otherworldly allure. A seamless integration of black obsidian and silver, it seemed to absorb the moonlight, casting a subtle, mesmerizing glow. Etched into the obsidian was an intricate pattern reminiscent of ancient symbols—a visual ode to the peculiar legacy they were about to deepen.
As Wednesday caressed Y/N's face, their eyes locked, and in that shared gaze, they found solace and understanding. Their intertwined fingers, now adorned with the weight of the black obsidian ring, rose together, and they turned their attention to the moon, hanging high in the velvet expanse of the night sky.
The moon, a silent witness to their journey, bathed them in its silvery glow. In that moment of quiet reflection, they let their minds drift back to their time at Nevermore Academy—the place where their paths first crossed.
Y/N: (Softly) Remember the nights we spent beneath the moon at Nevermore? The laughter, the secrets shared?
Wednesday: (Nodding) Nevermore was a chapter, and tonight, under the same moon, we begin a new one.
Y/N: (Smiling) I never thought this would be my ending.
Wednesday: (With a hint of mystery) Endings are illusions, Y/N. This is but the beginning.
Their hands tightened in a silent agreement, and in the tranquil moonlit glade, they kissed—a union of darkness and passion that spoke of a love destined to defy the ordinary. As they embraced, the moon bore witness to the promise of their unholy matrimony.
With the moon as their guide, they turned away from the clearing, fingers still entwined, and made their way back to the Addams family mansion. The shadows welcomed them like old friends, and as they crossed the threshold, the doors creaked shut behind them, sealing the pact of an eternal love that echoed through the haunted halls of the Addams legacy.
And so, beneath the watchful gaze of the moon and within the enigmatic embrace of the Addams mansion, Wednesday and Y/N embarked on a journey that defied the boundaries of time and tradition—an odyssey into the unknown, where each step marked a new beginning in the tapestry of their peculiar love. They walked hand in hand, ready to be officially married and embrace the darkness that awaited them—a love story destined to be inscribed in the annals of the Addams family's peculiar history.

I want to thank your for your amazing fics and recs!!
Plus I wanted to ask if you have any Halloween cherik fic recs? It could about them just celebrating Halloween or about them being monsters or something spooky. Anything that’s considered Halloween themed.
Guys, Sept and Oct have been such busy months for me in RL I haven't had the chance to catch up with recs and writing eek! Hopefully after next week things will slow down so I can properly partake in fandom again lol.
In the meantime, here are a list of Halloween fics for you to check out! I linked a post at the end to a list of vampire aus, but I'll be back with a monster themed Halloween rec list in a short while. Happy reading!!!
HALLOWEEN FIC RECS - PART 1
King of the Pumpkin Patch by tahariel
Charles has a Scaring deficit, but Erik is happy to help him learn to be more frightening this Halloween.
Fusion with Nightmare Before Christmas.
Ring In The Witching Hour by luninosity
Halloween at the mansion (written February 2012). Costume parties, ethics debates, emotional hurt/comfort, implied sex; slight warning for not-very-explicit mention of abuse in Charles's childhood.
To Boldly Dress (Like Those Who Might Have Gone Before) by iberiandoctor (jehane)
Erik doesn’t do Halloween costumes. Peter and Charles try to change his mind.
Seal Your Doom Tonight by CharryWotter
It's October at the X-Mansion, and as everyone prepares for the Halloween party, Peter makes a promise to his friends that he'll finally confess to Erik that he's his son...on Halloween.
When the day rolls around, at Peter's suggestion, Erik is dressed up as a zombie - and is completely out of his element. The party is loud and crowded; and through the noise, Peter gets up the courage and shouts the truth to Erik.
There's just one problem. Under the pounding music of the party, the words "You're my dad," sound quite a lot like "You're undead."
So can you really blame Erik for replying, "I AM AWARE! IT'S YOUR FAULT!"?
with the spiders on the wall by orphan_account
Erik is used to getting roped into a costume for Halloween, what with having 7 year old twins. This year is no different.
Trick or Treat by ximeria
Erik might have developed a bit of a crush on Raven's brother without ever having met him. It's just that he keeps witnessing Raven losing every argument with him on the phone and Erik is curious, okay? Anyone who can argue Raven out of one of her harebrained ideas has to be worth meeting.
The Most Sincere Patch by starlady
"Sexy professor" Charles meets a sexy vampire at Moira's annual Halloween party.
Xavier Family Values by winter_hiems
Charles and Erik love all their children. They’re just a little worried that David might be becoming, well… normal.
(An X-Men Addams Family AU)
trick or treat by pocky_slash
A Halloween ficlet collection.
Haunted House on the Hill by ximeria
Erik's not too sure at first about Raven talking him into taking Lorna to a haunted house party in Westchester. What if it's too scary? What if it's too boring? Is he expected to socialize as well?
Adam and Steve by TurtleTotem
Charles doesn't have a partner for Emma's couples-themed Halloween party, but perhaps he can tempt Erik to help him out...
A Headmaster in Sleepy Hollow by arcapelago (arcanewinter)
Sean is engrossed with the Legend of Sleepy Hollow when Charles lets slip that the historical location is just 30 miles away on the other side of Westchester county. (Set in the Burdens universe.)
Perfect Match by Gerec
Cherik - mistaken identity at a Halloween party

Looking for ways to spend your Violet Harmon or Murder House fall or just simply looking for entertainment? Here's a list for you. 🍁🎃👻
Twilight
Twilight was a film adapted based on the book series where a girl that goes by the name of Bella Swan who moves into forks and falls for an attractively mysterious guy who turns out to be a vampire.
Violet might like Twilight because it shares somewhat Tate and Violet's dynamic where Violet moves into a new neighbourhood and falls for a guy with a dark secret and well vampires.
Gorky Park
Gorky Park follows a story of a detective who finds 3 bodies with their identities gruesomely erased from them and buried in the snow as a COLD case in Gorky Park. The detective figured the practice was done by a professional only to be tangled into a web of political corruption.
This may have encouraged Violet to get the house for her morbid curiosity as in the pilot script, Violet was curious to the morbid stories down the basement. Unable to unlock the basement, the house was sold for her to explore it.
Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice follows a story about a deceased couple who haunt their house to scare new residents. The deetz family moved in, and the couple that failed to haunt them decided to get help from a poltergeist who went by the name betelgeuse, also known as Beetlejuice. However, Betelgeuse antics had escalated, and now a living girl with a fascination for the macabre and initially struggles with her dysfunctional family known as Lydia Deetz befriends the ghostly couple and helps them to get rid of betelgeuse.
Im sure Violet would relate to Lydia Deetz on a personal level due to their feeling of being alienated by their dysfunctional family and interest in the macabre.
The Addams Family
The dark, humoured series follows a dysfunctional macabre family, alienation, familial bonds, and embracing one’s unique identity, much like Violet's own struggles with her sense of self and her complicated family dynamics and resonating to Wednesday's melancholic yet resilient character.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is reflected in her parallels to Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, and Luna Lovegood. Like Harry, Violet feels isolated and misunderstood while confronting the oppressive forces in her life. Luna represents acceptance of individuality and the struggles of indifference, mirroring Violet's own struggle with identity. Meanwhile, Draco's internal conflict, stemming from his family's dark secrets and expectations, adds another layer of complexity as he grapples with loyalty and morality.
Extra: Hogwarts was built after Harvard, which may be one of the reasons why Violet wanted to go to Harvard before not only because it was a largely commended and known school but her appreciation for art and it's architecture just like her appreciation for her house because "it's got soul".
NO, I PROMISE I DIDN'T ADD THIS BECAUSE OF MY OBSESSION. (clearly... 😇 and I'm getting paid for this job so...)
NANA
The series follows a romance between two girls who were both named NANA who met on the same train to tokyo. However, their relationship is jeopardized as the harsh realities of the adult life.
Violet could be seen reading the mange NANA #1 in the series.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Violet's affinity for the darkness would enjoy this series along with the vampire aspects and took place in LA. The Rosenheim Mansion (Murder House) also made an appearance on the series in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4: Episode 4: Fear itself.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Violet has a whimsigothic element and has an affinity for macabre elements as mentioned. Sabrina struggles with finding her own identity due to her witch heritage, friends, family secrets, sense of rebellion to social norms, and chaos in her life, which Violet could resonate to.
Wednesday
As mentioned previously for films referenced to the Addams Family & Gorky Park, Violet may enjoy this series that has a touch for coming of age, struggling to fit social norms, family secrets, murder mystery, and so on...
X-Files
X-Files is a series of special agents that investigate the unexplained, also known as the x-files, and previously was a popular meme to the illuminati. Violet's affinity to crime and murder mystery may enjoy this just like Wednesday and Gorky Park.
The X-Files also featured the Alfred Rosenheim Manor (Murder House) in the X-Files Season 6, Episode 6: How the Ghost Stole Christmas.
Please do not repost, reblogs are appreciated, and do not use my works and claim it as yours. For donations: send details in dms.

Taking place in the same universe as Jack & Ellie (an indeterminate number of centuries in the future), Midnight Town is about Darby the werewolf, Gerrard the gargoyle, and Brandywyck the goblin, who get into crazy and scary adventures of supernatural mysteries and paranormal investigation. Unlike Jack & Ellie, Midnight Town goes beyond European fairy tales and myths, taking inspiration from classic Gothic horror literature and movies, mythology from all over the world- including ancient Egypt and Japan- and of course the spooky comedy of The Addams Family, The Munsters, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Disney's Haunted Mansion, Scooby-Doo and Ghostbusters.
Darby comes from a long line of werewolves, and is a direct descendant of the Irish werewolf Wulver, so he's in werewolf form even during the day. Gerrard, like other gargoyles in this universe, can turn into stone at will. Brandywyck is an inventor and a chemist, creating the gadgets that help them solve mysteries. We also see Darby's girlfriend Clementine, a bookish, well-read werewolf whose family was cursed to be permanent werewolves generations ago, similar to Darby, but she's perfectly okay with it.

This is my fill for card 3 Face Riding of Wyler kink bingo @weylerwritingevents
Prompt
POST SEASON 1 Laurel manages to escape from prison with the help of wednesday's mysterious stalker -who turns out to be a powerful outcast who wants revenge on Addams- and during a party the Addams are hosting, she takes them hostage withing their own mansion. While the Addams are threatened by Laurel in the library, Wednesday is kidnapped by Tyler himself who unexpectly offers to help her. She asks if he wants money, Tyler is offended but explains to Wednesday that the Hyde inside of him is now rejecting Laurel as master for a mysterious reason (love? passion? maybe a hyde in love can actually reject its master?); that he regained control over himself and followed Laurel only to reach Wednesday. "So? If not money what do you want in exchange to help me save my family?" "…come and sit on my face" "…what?" "You heard me." "This is a sick" "It definitely is but more important you should ask yourself if it's worth it to save your family" "And you are doing this…?" "To prove to you that you want me as much as I want you"
Wednesday admits to herself that she wants to and follows Tyler's instructions, literally losing her virginity on Tyler's mouth who transforms his tongue into the Hyde's tongue, much longer and tougher than human's one.
Immediately after coming hard on his tongue, she sees a shocked Laurel entering the room and screaming at Tyler, asking what the hell he is doing and if he lost his mind.
Tyler doesn't even blink, he gently removes Wednesday from his face, kills Laurel in a very painful way, and goes back to fuck Wednesday, this time with the lower part of his body.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 2023: THE TOP TEN
Hey there, Creatures of the Night! Once again it is that time of year where we recap what films have made the cut of Scream Scene's top ten best horror movies of all time! (all time defined as 1895-1960) If you’re looking for some genuine classics to check out this year, we’ve got you covered, with running times and where to find them!
#10. I Walked With a Zombie (1943)
The second Val Lewton produced film on the list, I Walked With a Zombie is perhaps best described as Jane Eyre in the Caribbean, but what is surprising is that the film is also a well researched depiction of Voodoo practices for 1943. The haunting imagery, sparse sound design, and dreamlike poeticism of this film might make it among the most unique zombie movies you’ve ever seen, made in a time with zombies were supernatural undead slaves, instead of reanimated undead cannibals. Do yourself a favour and check it out - it’s available to buy online in SD for $9.99 from Apple TV, and $14.99 on Amazon Video, Google Play Movies and YouTube. 1h 8m.
#9. The Old Dark House (1932)
James Whale’s definitive take on this traditional mystery thriller formula is a movie that will have you laughing right until the moment it has you screaming. In some ways, it’s a movie of clichés, with the protagonists seeking shelter in an old mansion during a rainstorm in the night and having to deal with the reclusive family they find within. But the dark, brooding cinematography, and truly shocking twists that rivet up the intensity over the running time, all contribute to make this a harrowing watch. It’s one part Rocky Horror Picture Show, one part The Addams Family, and one part The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I’m not kidding. The Old Dark House is currently streaming on AMC+, Criterion Channel, Flix Fling, and Tubi. 1h 10m.
#8. Horror of Dracula (1958)
Hammer Films had been producing X-rated horror and sci-fi content for a while by the time they got around to producing an adaptation of Dracula, but everything they learned from the success of The Curse of Frankenstein they applied tenfold to Dracula. From the subversive opening act to the shockingly graphic (for the time) finale, this film is full of action and excitement, as well as a sexually feral Count played by Christopher Lee for the first time. A Halloween crowd pleaser! Horror of Dracula is available to rent for $4.99 on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Cineplex, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube. 1h 22m.
#7. The Spiral Staircase (1946)
This RKO classic is another great take on the old dark house subgenre, from noir director Robert Siodmak. A masterpiece of suspense, featuring wonderful production design and dynamite performances from its cast, this movie will draw you in to the world of a mute servant named Helen trapped in a dark manor on a stormy night with a whole cast of lunatics! A forerunner of giallo (no, really!), this classic and classy thriller is not to be missed! The Spiral Staircase is currently streaming on Classix, Flix Fling, and Plex. 1h 23m.
#6. The Fly (1958)
While the 1986 remake may be more well known today, the original rendition of this body horror classic still retains a punch with its central mystery, compelling drama, and traumatic ending. Excellent creature effects and memorable moments like a woman screaming seen through compound eyes cement this as one of the great sci-fi/horror films of its time! The Fly is currently available to rent for $4.99 on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube. 1h 34m.
#5. Peeping Tom (1960)
While it may come across as fairly tame by today's standards, in 1960 the seminal British horror film Peeping Tom was considered so offensive it single-handedly ended the career of its director, former national treasure Michael Powell. Today, the film still has the power to disturb through its exploration of the relationship between victims, voyeurs, and viewers. Peeping Tom is currently available to stream on Tubi and to rent for $4.99 on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Microsoft Store. 1h 41m.
#4. Gojira (1954)
Ishiro Honda’s classic giant monster movie, the progenitor of all kaiju and tokusatsu movies to come, is a masterpiece of ingenuity and imagination. But more than that, it’s a powerful statement about the horrors of nuclear war, an angry and relentless funeral dirge mourning for the Japanese lives lost and raging against the American foreign policy that continued to poison Japan with radiation even after the war. Godzilla is an apocalypse personified, the great revenge of the natural world against the hubris of man that has harmed it. But Gojira is also a film about the immense weight of personal and scientific responsibility weighed against the greater good, and its position on the use of weapons of mass destruction is perhaps more nuanced than you’d expect. Don’t let the campy reputation of Godzilla in the West fool you. Clear your mind of that and sit down to watch this powerful black & white epic. Gojira is streaming on Cineverse, Criterion Channel, Midnight Pulp, Plex, and Tubi, and can be rented for $4.99 on Apple TV. 1h 38m.
The American adaptation Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) is also worth a watch, and is available on The Criterion Channel, Plex, Tubi, and to rent on iTunes. 1h 20m.
#3. Cat People (1942)
Cat People is brilliant. The first of Val Lewton’s horror movies for RKO, it best exemplifies his shadow drenched, suggestive, adult, contemporary, and ambiguous brand of horror. Irena is convinced that if she experiences sexual excitement, she will turn into a black panther and kill the man she loves. Her husband is convinced it’s all in her head. What is the truth? Cat People gives the viewer plenty to chew on while being the first horror movie to understand that less is more, that the monster is scarier if you can’t see it, and also how to pull off a jump scare. You can find this absolute classic to stream on Amazon Prime, and to purchase for $9.99 on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft and YouTube. 1h 10m.
#2. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Finally dethroned from the number 1 spot after 265 episodes! Early on in the first Hollywood horror craze, Paramount Pictures managed to outdo their main competitor Universal with this masterpiece from director Rouben Mamoulian. With a use of sound, visuals, effects, script, and performance far beyond what most films were doing at the time, this adaptation reigns supreme among other versions of the same story. Fredric March utterly inhabits the dual title role, but it’s Miriam Hopkins’ performance that will stick with you in this superb examination of domestic abuse, alcoholism, and the beast that dwells within us. Currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, and available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and YouTube for $4.99. 1h 38m.
#1. Psycho (1960)
It's our new number one! Not a big surprise, as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho changed the horror genre for decades to come. A low budget thriller based around its two big twists, the film's power is a little muted now that those twists have been thoroughly disseminated through pop culture osmosis, Psycho is still a master class in pacing and tension through its first half, and contains an incredible performance from actor Anthony Perkins. You can rent Psycho on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube for $4.99. 1h 49m.
A new top ten with a new number one! Will Psycho keep its throne as long as Jekyll and Hyde did? Keep listening to Scream Scene to find out!
