The Sallows
An AU HC of Sebastian & Anne's parents with a dash of dear ol' uncle Solomon.
gif for attention. LOL. TEENY bit of hurt ahead.
Tumblr media
Sorry in advance.
TLDR: Sallows are rich.
I present to you the Sallows:
1) Even though it's not explicitly stated we can gather from context clues (despite the rationale of "magic") that the Sallows were quite wealthy and were of a socially high rank. LBR even if there IS magic those who are well-educated & value knowledge tend to be those who are higher up the social ladder. Don't misunderstand it as people who are less fortunate do not, the base here is that even if they started from the bottom they got UP the ladder to the point that knowledge is so valued they made room for a library & in my experience the people who can afford to have their own library have money, lots of it.
Some basics:
These are things I (& I'm sure other people) have gleaned from playing the game alone or just kind of reading through all the little details about our favorite Sallow *cough cough* Sebastian Solomon. Sorry if this isn't super articulate and kinda scattered.
2) We can glean this from the fact that they had a large home. Not just any large home but a countryside home in an era where the wealthy often wanted homes away from the crowded and noisy cities for several reasons:
Health and Sanitation: Cities were rapidly industrializing, leading to increased pollution, poor sanitation, and the spread of diseases. The wealthy could afford to live in less populated areas, which were considered healthier due to cleaner air and less congestion.
Status and Privacy: Living away from the city was also a status symbol. It demonstrated that one had the means to afford such a lifestyle. Additionally, it provided a level of privacy and exclusivity that was not available in the dense urban centers.
Aesthetic and Leisure: The countryside offered a more aesthetically pleasing environment, with natural landscapes as opposed to the industrial backdrop of the city. It also provided space for leisure activities such as hunting, gardening, and hosting social gatherings. Even now, this is still a thing. LBR, magic or no classism existed in the wizarding world. Those who can afford to do this seriously choose oddly empty or less populated areas with pretty things to look at, not necessarily "views" as it is more like "the little things".
Technological Advances: The development of transportation like railways and streetcars made commuting from suburban areas to city centers feasible, allowing the wealthy to enjoy the best of both worlds: working in the city while living in the tranquility of the suburbs. Case in point the Hogwarts express.
To continue about their home; it was large enough to have a cellar. I stress again that they have a library, a cellar library where they stored many books and artifacts related to magic and history which implies that they had a passion for learning and collecting rare and valuable items, which could also indicate a high level of education and culture. Who in this time period can afford to be "cultured"? The wealthy.
3) Through Solomon we know they had connections to the British Ministry of Magic since he was an auror. We also know that he had a library, albeit a small one compared to his brother and sister-in-law's cellar library, which implies he's earned enough to still manage to acquire one and have a comfortable living. Which suggest that dear old Solomon was probably a highly valued Auror. As we know, only the best can be Aurors and the best usually garners RESPECT & WEALTH & PRESTIGE. Solomon's position suggests that the Sallows were deeply integrated into the fabric of magical governance. Aurors are elite members of the magical law enforcement community, often involved in high-level operations and decisions within the Ministry of Magic. This role would necessitate a high degree of trust, reliability, and recognition by the Ministry, indicating a family that is well-regarded and influential within the upper echelons of magical society. This respect and recognition is not merely a reflection of Solomon's personal achievements but also suggests a family background that supports and fosters such high levels of achievement and commitment to public service.
ANYWAY, we can presume through all the clues that the Sallows positions were both prestigious & likely well-compensated, reflecting the importance of their contributions to the magical world. This financial and social capital further enable their pursuits (professors, auror), such as maintaining a significant library, which in itself is a symbol of wealth and status, implies that the Sallow family possessed considerable wealth & resources, influence & clearly had contributions to the wizarding world even before we meet Solomon and family that commanded respect within society.
Did I miss anything??? S'cuse my ramblings...
Isla Sallow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mother of Anne & Sebastian Sallow
Slytherin, Pure-blood
younger twin sister
Solomon's heart
comes from a fairly well off family
Nicknamed "Ava"
Gav's heart
Met Gav in 6th yr in the library mistaking him for Solomon from behind at first.
They were friends first and then the more they got to know each other the more they just clicked.
Tortured about the relationship she has with the Sallow twins.
Resisted Gav's charms for as long as possible.
Ultimately they just clicked much better and in ways she struggled to click with Solomon. Their interests were well aligned and tended to complement each other.
Ended her relationship with Solomon late October in 7th yr.
Overall I kind of went for like "caged bird" to "freed bird" with her. With Solomon, all he wanted was to love her, keep her protected and mostly to himself I.E. he didn't want her doing "dangerous" things (a la Evelyn O'Connell nee Carnahan).
Logic behind the name:
With Gavriel he made no such restrictions he recognized she's more than capable of handling herself, like his twin he wanted to do the same but thought he could lose her to someone else who would give her what she wanted like Solomon lost her to him.
Professor of Ancient Artefacts
Isla - Scottish name, pretty, feminine, elegant derived from the Islay island and a river. Pure & Simple.
Aveline - French, from the Germanic Avila originally coming from the Germanic word 'avi'. Means "desired.
Ava - nickname for Aveline, Latin for "Bird," "life," or "living one." Associated with the word "Avis"
Adair - Scottish/Gaelic meaning from the oak tree ford.
Gavriel Sallow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Father of Anne & Sebastian Sallow
Ravenclaw, the hat was torn about putting him in Slytherin or Gryffindor but he proved to be more Ravenclaw. Just barely though.
The younger Sallow twin.
Nicknames "Arie" & "Bram". He answers to both
Isla's love
Never met his twin's gf until 6th yr when they both we're doing their own independent research and met each other in the library.
He never cared much about his twin's gf... In fact he didn't know who she was and didn't care to meet her.
Until he met her in the library when she thought he was his brother. Then it was like he got hit by cupid's wrecking balls.
He didn't know she was his brother's gf until it was too late.
He was pining for awhile and tortured about it especially after learning it is his twin brother's gf.
Totally deluded himself into thinking she's just his brother's friend though... everything and anything he could do to try not to take her away from him but...
No surprise he acted on his feelings though... He's still Slytherin enough under that Ravenclaw veneer.
Parent's gave him the longer Abraham since he's the younger twin.
The charismatic one
Ended up needing reading glasses as he got older from reading all those books.
FRECKLES!! His freckles disappear when he doesn't get enough though. He's lightly freckled but has more than his twin.
Professor of Enchanted Artefacts
Logic behind the name:
Gavriel - Hebrew, meaning "God's hero" or "God is my strength". I wanted something kind of inline with the name Solomon.
Arie - as a nickname for Gavriel is also of Hebrew origin "Lion" or "lion of God."
Abraham - Again, I wanted something to keep in line with Solomon and also Hebrew in origin. Was hoping it kinda gives off that "wisdom" vibe?
Bram - Diminutive of Abraham. I wanted something that was.... uh... "friendlier" than the full Abraham.
Young Solomon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The older Twin
Isn't as freckly as his twin
Dating Isla since 4th yr
Isla's first love
Sometimes went by "Brom"
Lost Isla to his brother in 7th yr
He knew they had become friends through sheer happenstance
Isla mistook his twin for him in the library and the rest was history.
Even though they broke up, Solomon still deeply loved Isla. (THE PINING!!!)
Where his twin and former love became professors, he became an auror.
He's charming but he's "average" compared to his more charming twin.
When he had to take in his orphaned niece and nephew he found it difficult to face them.
He favors Anne because she looks so much like her mother, his lost love, Isla.
He hates on Sebastian because he looks too much like himself, like his father, Solomon's twin and could have been his son.
Sebastian is a daily reminder of what he could have had with Isla.
Logic behind the name:
Abram - Hebrew, again I still wanted something in line with Solomon and something that played into the twinship. Means "high father" or "exalted father" before it becamme "father of many" to reflect his covenant with God. but also seems to really suit him in the he protects Anne & Sebastian
Brom - I wanted something that played into their twinship but was still distinctly his and can add to the whole mistaken identity thing. Also, seemed like a bit more rugged than "Bram" and really seemed to suit him much better. It has that solidness to its sound and even kind of gives me "stubborn" vibes. Brom is the dark to Bram's light.
In short I really wanted a name that encapsulates all at once a guardian, a warrior, and a man in search of redemption.

Oklahoma state senator Tom Woods, "We don't want that filth in our state."
Nex Benedict was killed by classmates and none of the people in charge of "protecting the children" cares. I guess only certain children count. Not ALL children.
Nex Benedict doesn't get to grow up because of people like Tom Woods.
Senator Tom Woods
2300 N. Lincoln Blvd., Rm. 529.2
Oklahoma City, OK 73105
(405) 521-5576
Senator Tom Woods grew up in Westville, Oklahoma, and was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2022. He proudly represents the citizens of Senate District 4, which includes Adair County and parts of Delaware, Sequoyah and Cherokee Counties.
Woods was raised on a dairy farm and graduated from Westville Public Schools. His grandparents are both retired educators, and his father worked in a factory while his mother stayed at home to work on the farm and raise his six brothers and sisters.
Tom’s family taught him the value of hard work from a very young age as he was given his first dairy cow at the age of 12, in exchange for milking cows on his parent’s dairy. He remained dedicated to his business and had 30 dairy cows by the time he was 18.
He now operates a feed store, trucking company, and a commercial cow/calf operation with 200 cows.  Through hard work and commitment, Woods believes we must build up future generations to be active contributors and producers in society, not just consumers.

Alright! The Empty House(Full Analysis, yay!]. My apologies that it's taken this long, but here we go.
So, a lot people know the story, that Holmes returns from the dead, having faked his death for three years, and helps solve the murder of Ronald Adair.
What I want to talk about though, is how Empty House is both a child of love, and resentment, and how it permeates throughout the story.
Resentment is obvious, at this point. Doyle resented the public pressure of 1893 England to have him bring back Sherlock Holmes, that that was what he was famous for, instead of his historical novels and Spiritualist work.
And it's colored into the characters as well. Different adaptations of Sherlock Holmes vary on levels of resentment. For example, the BBC Sherlock adaptation colors it heavily with resentment, and anger.
But even then, there is resentment between the characters as well. Even if Holmes's return is hailed as a joy by Watson, there is a resentment, a hesitation, in plunging back into his life with Sherlock Holmes.
Can you blame him? How would Watson know that Holmes wouldn't vanish again? How could Holmes traipse back into his life, free from the trauma and despair from Mary's death, and his own loss?
Perhaps, too, in this case, Watson serves as a mouthpiece for the audience. They resented that Holmes died. That the figure in their great game was gone. Dead. Their letters to Doyle, to anyone, to newspapers are desperate and resentful.
Doyle created an icon. And taking him away quite literally created a literary firestorm.
Resentment, I'd even argue, colors Holmes too. Watson did not live life in fear for three years, going from continent to continent, place to place, away from Moran, who knew he was alive.
Moran, of course, is another figure of resentment. He resents Holmes for taking Moriarty away. He resents Holmes for living when Moriarty plunged into the Falls, dead. And he resented Ronald Adair for cheating him out.
With all of these, it is no wonder it is from a pen of a bitter writer.
But, but. Love, is also strong here. It's incredibly strong. Perhaps even more so than resentment.
As I mentioned in my prior blog, Holmes’s return is gentle. He treats Watson's faint with care and a delicate hand. Mrs. Hudson accepts him back, and Watson does not ask him to leave(as much as I think Doyle wanted to...), and instead, is pleased Holmes is back, alive, and not dead at the bottom of Reichenbach.
I'd even argue that it's love that brought Holmes back. Love of his family, love of his brother, of John Watson, of Mrs. Hudson, of being able to help people, brought him back from Reichenbach and his three year exile.
(And, to even buying Watson's practice so Watson could have something to go back to after Mary's death. Whatever you may believe in between Holmes and Watson, that, to me, is a show of love and support. To help take care of a mourning friend.)
Remember: it was a murder that brought Holmes back. People needed help, and so did Watson, and everyone back in London with Moran on the loose. And as much as Holmes decries being bored at the face of crime, he is a man who loves to help. He loves being the one people turn to when other options are exhausted, or the police laugh them off.
Love and loyalty drive him to despair, when he can't save his clients.
Doyle didn't have to treat this story this gently. It didn't need to be there, for him, as he was caving into public pressure.
But it was. There is a dual element of both love and resentment from the pen of a bitter writer, and I think it's utterly fascinating.

May I ask why incest? I don’t mean this rudely. I also find incestuous relationships compelling when done right in literature but I’ve never been brave enough express that. And you have a whole blog dedicated to it! You don’t have to answer if uncomfortable with the ask. I am simply curious.
Why not incest?
It's the ultimate forbidden love trope. From Gilbert Adair's The Dreamers:
"A Romeo and Juliet star crossed not because they belonged to two families but to a single one?"
I have a friend who loves to read alien romances, another who likes yaoi, my mom watches Christmas movies all year long. Everyone has a type of story that it's their preference, and tbh, I wouldn't even say mine is incest. It's one of the topics I like to read about, but not the only one. (If I had to chose between no more incest novels or no more sapphic novels, sorry incest, but I'm taking the sapphics).
I always liked to consume my media through written works, and I noticed that while other incest bloggers (namely @incensuous, @shipcestuous and @asexuelfs) had huge compilations of incest media, there was a lack of books mentioned. When there were books cited, there lacked information on the story. And so I sat out to find and catalogue and summarize incest novels. So that's why the blog. (Also, shout out to @thecloserkin, who was already doing something similar before I came along).

Navajo Women and Their Important Roles: Women in the Navajo society were equal to men. They could earn the title of War Women and sit in councils as equals. This privilege led an Irishman named Adair who traded with the Navajo from 1739-1745 to accuse the Navajo of having a "petticoat government". Clan kinship followed the mother's side of the family. The children grew up in the mother's house, and it was the duty of an uncle on the mother's side to teach the boys how to hunt, fish, and perform certain tribal duties. The women owned the houses and their furnishings. Marriages were carefully negotiated, but if a woman decided to divorce her spouse, she simply placed his belongings outside the house. Navajo women also worked hard. They cared for the children, cooked, tended the house, tanned skins, wove baskets, and cultivated the fields. Men helped with some household chores like sewing, but they spent most of their time hunting. Navajo girls learned by example how to be warriors and healers. They learned to weave baskets, tell stories, trade, and dance. They became mothers and wives, and learned their heritage. The Navajo learned to adapt, and the women were the core of the Navajo.
