Atlus, please tell me the lore behind Adachi's mp3 player

Even just looking at Adachi, he doesn't exactly have the image of someone who gives a shit lol.

And this is intentional. Soejima talks about this aspect of Adachi's design in the P4 Design Works. Adachi is said to be an elite officer, one of the best of the best, and Soejima thought an elite might be smart, but lacking in other areas. For this reason, Soejima designed him with that crooked tie and messy bedhead.

That's certainly a common thing in fiction - someone who's good at one thing, but a complete space case in something unrelated. Though he comes off as incompetent in-game, to the extent that him showing competency in December surprises Dojima lol. And even when you get into the real dumb plot stuff that I write 10k words about, it took him like 4 months to figure out that "people can come out of the TV". Ma-Maybe his record was better at his old station.

Even in what Atlus has mentioned about the setting for P4 that doesn't get discussed in-game, Adachi's red tie is something Dojima gave him, and only because Dojima got tired of seeing him wear the old shabby tie he wore before and gave him one of his spare neckties.

If Dojima had never just given him a different tie to wear, I imagine Adachi would still be wearing his old shitty tie until it completely fell apart... Is Adachi pathetic enough to try and like... tape a tie together? Probably.

Him not caring too much about appearance and being a messy guy seems to extend to other aspects of his life. Even in his character profiles for P4 and P4AU, both say he's terrible at cleaning his room and the P4 one also says he sucks at filing paperwork lol.

This continues in his P4AU narration. The investigating detective pulls out 3 pieces of "evidence": A TV which ends up being used to get Adachi into the plot, a model gun which fits with his hobby being doing gun maintenance at home, and some kind of random off brand iPod-esque thing.

The actual music player itself is unimportant. Instead, it's used for a little characterization moment where Adachi confirms that it is indeed something that's his (he even remembers how he got it!), but he didn't particularly care about it and just left it wherever.

All things considered, I get the mental image of Adachi being the kind of guy who uses that meme 13-in-1 ~for men~ product, and his room is just a mountain of cup noodles and piles of random bullshit. Maybe there are more iPods and model guns to be unearthed from underneath his other stuff.

All of this is only talking about the more physical and material aspects of him, but I think you can extend this to who he is as a person and his mentality as well. Granted, some guys in real life end up being useless slobs as adults because they're used to their mom/sister/family/etc babying them, but uhhhhhhh from what Adachi says about his past, we can instantly rule that out with him.

(Edit: As a comment pointed out, upon re-reading this this does sound weird. When I wrote this, I was thinking more about doormat pushover moms. I don't see Adachi's mom doing domestic stuff as her babying him as a child because it strikes me as the Default Gender Role thing where the dad makes the money but the mom takes care of the household. And from how Adachi talks about it, you get the impression she wasn't hyper attentive towards him, as if she did like the bare minimum lol. Adachi's attitude towards the whole thing also strikes me as different than the dudes who grow up as spoiled little kings in their households.)

It seems pretty sensible to correlate his physical state and the way he uses it to express a lack of care for himself to something going on in his brain. Adult burnout, depression, lack of self-esteem & self-worth, all of the above.

I like the random anecdote about the music player, especially since it's him. A bingo game at a New Year's party............... A bingo game at a New Year's party???????????? Adachi, you went to a New Year's party? Hoooly shit dude I don't even do that.

Since he was in jail during New Years 2012 and only arrived in Inaba during spring 2011, for him to have won it during New Year's implies this is from before the events of Persona 4. E.g. it's not something Dojima dragged him to. I assume it was some work-related New Year's party when he was still stationed in Iwatodai. Keeping up appearances for the higher-ups? Did he just want free food? A bit lonely and wanted company and absolutely not gonna say that outloud? (All of the above?)

In both his P4 dialogue and his P4AU inner thoughts, he tends to look down on others. He's annoyed by the old woman at Junes (...though his voiced line on rank 6 expresses he liked her doting on him), he calls the protagonist a dumbass (...but only after admitting he misses him, Dojima, and Nanako), he doesn't think he'll ever get married (even tho I'm available).

And yet, as little blurbs like this go to show, we know he still participates. ♪(´▽｀)

Did he even use the iPod thing before chucking it? What did he put on it? Idols or something? Answer me, Atlus.

I love when games make be feel like garbage but in an earned way! I have literally been cogitating on the Phantom Thieves and how they alter people's mind for the ENTIRE game! Bring it back in the endgame armed with some teeth! Good!

I actively like that the game is wrestling with this. Like, the Bad End, right? How different are Maruki's methods than the Thieves? Shiho's attempted suicide finally incentized me to roll with the entire idea of stealing Kamoshida's heart, but as evidenced by my unrelenting and endless bitching about Ryuji and Mishima and the Phansite, I never bought into the idea that the Thieves were justified by default.

Also through this entire sequence, the whole thing while everyone talks, Maruki never raises his voice, his composure never cracks, his resolution never breaks.

He's even like "okay. come at me." but he wants to talk first. He wants everyone to live in this world until February 3rd, when he will show up to talk this through. And then, if it comes to a fight, they can all fight.

Everyone catches up outside the Palace and decides its time to head home and they'll talk tomorrow, because Oof there's a Lot to think about.

Back at the cafe, things are back to normal for Futaba and Sojiro. Wakaba is gone.

That's the part that really throws a wrench into the ethics for me. Maruki is able to undo the murders of good people, and by resetting everything, they are dead again. The implications of this are a lot. He absolutely should not have the power to restore life like this, but he does and already has.

It makes it all the more interesting that Akechi is here. Because logically, it feels like if you somehow deleted him from the timeline, it would undo the deaths of Wakaba and Okumura. And yet, he's still here.

My theory that Akechi is here because of Reverie's desire is gaining more traction.

Thank god there is a fun moment of levity here int he flashback where Morgana does his usually I Am Not A Cat from pure instinct but then is like oh wait i am a cat lmao nvmd. It's a good chuckle.

Futaba goes home to presumably cry into Sojiro's chest as he awkwardly pats her head and tries to figure out what the fuck is wrong. Just gutting.

Also she confirms that she lowkey knew the whole time something was wrong but ignored it. Oh, Futaba. I'm so sorry.

Adachi had stopped by Moel on his way home from another shitty day at the station, being bullied by Dojima and taking on stupid cases like lost cats.

He had picked out some cheap instant ramen that he could make without much effort and a case of soda, and was now waiting in line to check out.

The transaction went by as it always did when he stopped by Moel, with friendly chatter between him and the girl, Nami, working the register, though something was different today.

As Adachi stepped out of the building, so did Nami.

“What are you coming out here for?” Adachi dared to inquire.

Nami looked at him, and wordlessly took out a pack of cigarettes.

“I’m on break. Do you have a lighter, keijisan?”

What an odd thing to ask. He reckoned if one were to smoke, they ought to have their own lighter- yet he had one nonetheless. Not that he was the smoker.

Nami flipped it open, lit her cigarette, and handed the lighter back to him, blowing the smoke out languidly.

“It’s going to rain, keijisan. Do you have an umbrella?” Nami asked him, giving him an odd look.

Adachi shook his head, adjusting how his raincoat sat on his shoulders. “Nope, I got my raincoat right here,” he said.

Nami nodded slowly, looking up at the clouds. Adachi mirrored her, and sure enough the sky was a darkening grey- a sign of incoming rain.

“Well, you’d better hurry home anyways. Better to be safe than soaked, right?”

There was another one of those weird looks. It was annoyance or irritation, nor was it impatience or disgust.

No, Nami was looking at him with something akin to compassion. Her gaze, though oddly piercing, wasn’t unkind. Her words were the same. Her tone was often gruff, her words barely scraping past the bar of socially acceptable, but they were rarely ever harsh.

It wasn’t something Adachi was used to. Sure, Dojima’s nephew Narukami and Nanako were kind to him, and Narukami’s friends at least tolerated him, but to be looked at so warmly by someone completely unrelated to work or the case... It was nice.

“Hey, keijisan, if you don’t hurry that raincoat won’t do anything to keep you dry. Get moving, okay? We can meet up when the storm lets up more,” Nami said, pushing him lightly to snap him out of his thoughts.

He nodded, and- despite himself- gave her a smile. A rarely-used, genuine smile.

She returned it, baring her teeth and wrinkling her nose.

i saw your adachi rei posts and i just need to infodump and give clarifications,, basically that guy (Missile) on twitter whos building a robot is her creator!! Missile has built a miku robot in the past, but this time he wanted to built a completely original robot that can stand and sing. thus adachi rei was born. but of course - she need a voice, so he developed her voice bank without any humans sampling, based purely on sin and cosine wavelengths. Up till now he's made amazing progress, the full body with bending joints as well as her outfit that he sowed by hand!! that's why in adachi rei songs and arts you'll see such a big emphasis on her being a robot as well as a scientist creator . thank you for listening (unrelated but your blog is such a delight, to see people still passionate about vocaloid songs in particular, and so supportive of smaller producers.... incredible <3)
