#that’s gross profits

That’s interesting, but it is not exactly the right figure.
You’re looking at the amount of money companies receive in sales, which is a lot, but it is not the amount of money they have at their disposal. A lot of that money is used to pay for the goods they sold and/or the salaries and all the logistics/manufacturing for getting the goods to you.
The figure you want to look at is the profits. It will be less impressive, but it will reflect reality better. And less impressive does not mean meaningless. You don’t need a company to make 1 billion in less than a week for it to be outrageous. 1 billion of profits in a month, a quarter or even a year is already way too many.
#I’m not saying that this is not saying something that should be said#but a company can make 1 billion in revenue and then redistribute that billion through wages and supply chain contracts and all#revenue does not tell you anything of the money companies hoard#that’s gross profits#and tbh the profits for some of these companies are potentially in the 1 billion within a week#so it would make for a more accurate and just as outrageous visual

there is something so viscerally evil about tumblr
1.) selling your shit to AI
2.) putting it in the app update while not stating so in the app changes on the app store
3.) having the setting turned off so EVERYONE has to manually go in an opt out—if they’re even aware that Tumblr is selling their work to AI companies (again, because they’re trying to keep quiet about it)
it’s all very disgustingly slimy that you have to OPT OUT rather than opt in, they just take your consent without even asking for it.
anywho, don’t forget to go to settings < visibility < and turn on the option that stops tumblr from giving your work to AI, it’s automatically set to be OFF if you’ve updated your app to version 33.4.

from @/JoshuaPHilll, via More Perfect Union
#hvaña#labor#uaw strike#wishing all striking workers across sectors a successful strike and more importantly a fair contract!!!!!!#remember to be on the lookout for anti union proaganda such as 1) unions being at fault for negotiations falling through#2) pitting one group of workers against another#3) workers being greedy and unreasonable#and many more. remember that the power to call off the strike ALWAYS lies with the company if only they meet the workers demands.#not even gross revenue but profits is 20 BILLION usd they can afford to pay their workers a fucking living wage and pension.#ANYWAYS!!!!.

my fav love-hate enstars song is trap for you because it's so fujobrainpilled. inviting in a third-party (the audience, really) into their "dream/dangerous love/drown in our pleasure" they even have lyrics about setting it up for the third-party ("we saw you desire it") like really honing in to the voyeurism core of fujoshis. super interesting and i love that enstars is really tongue-in-cheek about fanservice. strongest example being that one event with himeru and tatsumi acting for a vn and they have a reference to ppl who like brocon. like gross topic during that event but it was a funny 4th wall reference
#enstars is really good cause it's a very potent piece of media and reflective of the issues in the isol industry#could not play the game for months cause it reminded me of the abuse stories coming out of the kpop industry when loona had that case#at the same time enstars has really gross fanservice cause they're still for profit yk#it feeds into ppl's tastes while also reprimanding them about the treatment of idols#not the best writing but it's like a solid emotional whiplash everytime#enstars#eve enstars#ensemble stars#with better writing and like a completely different art style#it could be like limbus project 2.0

As the studios continue to shoot themselves in the foot, I thought some people might like an explanation for what all this "writing off for taxes" means when a studio, network, or streaming service pulls a show to write it off.
Disclaimer: I have worked in accounting but am not and never have been an accountant. This is a simplified explanation that doesn't go into all the details so people have a basic understanding of what's going on.
Long post continues below...
Businesses (including self-employed people) are taxed based on the profits the business makes. To determine what the profits are, companies tally up all the money they made from various sources then deduct all the expenses they paid for the business.
For a very basic example with completely made-up numbers, I'm screening a movie to 100 people who pay $10 each to see it. So I have $1000. It cost me $200 to rent the theater, I spent $20 printing the tickets people bought, and I bought $80 worth of flyers to advertise the screening. So I add up all my expenses ($200 + $20 + $80 = $300), then I subtract that from how much money I made ($1000 - $300) to get how much profit I get taxed on, or $700.
Now let's say instead of paying to have the tickets and flyers printed, I buy a printer to do it myself. The printer costs $200, but I'm going to be using it for several years. This is where Amortization comes in.
Amortization is a type of deduction businesses take on assets they purchase where the deduction for that asset is spread over time. The value of the asset is going to decrease over time due to normal wear and tear, but it's going to be in use for many years so I can choose to deduct it over time as well. So for my $200 printer, I deduct $50 the first year, $30 the second, $20 the third, and so on until the full value of the asset has been deducted over the course of several years. Again, it's way more complicated than this but you get the general idea.
Now, in 1993 it was made legal for films and television networks to write off the expenses in creating a movie or show via amortization. The idea is that, instead of losing value due to wear and tear, the intellectual property loses value because it becomes less popular over time. A movie released in 2000 is never going to make as much money in 2001, and less in 2002, and less than that in 2003, and so on because DVD/bluray sales will fall over time and it won't be licensed as frequently by networks or streaming services and those licensing fees will go down. So now all the expenses for a film or show can be amortized over 15 years.
The thing is, if you amortize something and it loses all value, you can claim all remaining amortized value at once. For example, if you have a company vehicle that breaks down completely and can't be repaired, it's not worth 25% less than it was the prior year, it's now worthless. So the company can declare the asset no longer has value and claim whatever expenses were paid as a deduction at once.
So what the studios are doing are saying "This TV show no longer has any value, so we're pulling it from distribution and writing off all the money we spent on production this year."
The problem is, that IP is considered to have no value from that time forward as far as taxes are concerned. If the company makes money off of that IP again, they have to repay all the money they saved on their taxes.
So if I make a movie that costs $60 million in 2022, I can decide not to release the movie and write off all $60 million as a deduction on my taxes for 2022. But I can NEVER release that movie. Because if I do, I then have to pay back the taxes I would have paid in 2022 if I didn't take that $60 million deduction.
So what's going on is all these studios, networks, and streaming services are permanently shelving all of these shows and movies to reduce their tax burden THIS YEAR ONLY, and then they can NEVER release them again or they have to pay those taxes. It also means they don't have to pay any residuals to actors, writers, directors, and other people who made the film (which is funny because residuals paid out are business expenses and can also be written off).
It is the epitome of goosing the numbers for a single quarter at the expense of the entire business. They're saving money on taxes for a single year while destroying the very thing they use to make profits in the first place.
#wga#sag-aftra#film#accounting#Hollywood accounting#I know I used the tag 'Hollywood Accounting' but that's something else really#It's the studios using a separate set of accounting books to 'prove' that a movie or show has never made a profit#Thus they don't have to pay percentages of profits since it didn't make a profit according to their magic math#You'd be surprised the number of movies that grossed hundreds of millions or even over a BILLION dollars made no profit

In one of the 647968 posts going "What You Like Says Nothing About You" (broadly agree) the first comment in the reply section was, "well I'm never going to apologize for being a Swiftie and a Reylo and Destiel shipper and Snape fan and loving ACOTAR and LOTR and Hamilton and B99" and I'm like, actually being this much of a pathological white liberal makes you the exception to this rule 😭😭
#do i consistently hyperfixate on racist white liberal trash? yes#am i proud of it? absolutely not#i have friends who also hyperfixate on toxic white bullshit but in the 'i hate this so much im gonna fix it' way#you don't have to live in a constant state of apologia you just have to understand that these things are criticised on legitimate grounds#and do some self examination on why you're so constantly attracted to this kind of media and how you can counterbalance it#idk if anyone told me one of my hyperfixations were gross I'd be like ''IKR?? i hate it too!''#what i have a problem with is people saying ''if you know something is problematic you should stop consuming it''#that is ableist and counter productive#''please consume in ways that don't turn a profit for the creator'' ''maybe try this alternative media as well'' <- aces 💯💯#there's so much nuance that's lost in this 'pro' vs 'anti' bs like criticism is the same as censorship#and harrassment is the same as criticism#ethics vs morals vs laws#anyway acting like being criticised for consuming the most toxic white shit in creation makes you oppressed#is a level of racism i can't bother unpacking#fandom racism#hp antis get off this post. the tags are about you people too#anti swifties#anti reylo#anti acotar#anti spn#anti hamilton#anti b99#fandom wank#knee of huss#white liberals#white women#white queers#white people

Even since Michael's heavenly ascend, not just the music industry but, quite frankly, the entertainment industry as a whole has been left with a massive void that I don't believe will be fulfilled in the near future or ever again. That man had a star power equivalent to three Galactuses at their most powerful. You will never witness someone like that ever again, not in this lifetime nor the next one. He was and still is one of a kind.
#michael jackson#txt#michael is one of the very very few celebs i actually care about even though he is no longer here with us physically#how come this man has been dead for nearly a decade and a half and he is still more relevant than the most relevant LIVING celebs rn????#that's how you know that if he was still around people would go just as insane over him as they did decades earlier#michael is the biggest celebrity artist performer entertainer of all time. there is no debate around this topic#the mj fandom on this site is practically dead but i know there are a few of you that will come across this and agree wholeheartedly#i manifest the biopic being a massive commercial and critical success#it will gross over $1 billion at the box office and become one of the most profitable movies of the 2020s as well as a staple in biopics#specially the musical ones. we are gonna make that happen#i mean we already do a far superior job to his actual goddamn estate so we can easily turn this into an overnight hit#not a sleeper hit/cult movie but an INSTANT hit#the closest people we got michael's level of legendary fame are paul mccartney and madonna but even they don't make as much noise#i'm (not) sorry but michael was truly built different. he was on a category of his own#a category so incredibly monstrously and insanely high that i don't believe anyone else will ever be able to reach it#no swifties taylor swift isn't on michael's level either#her level of fame is closer to madonna's at her peak#a massive star but not on michael's level. michael was practically worshipped outside of america even in the most racist anti-black#cultures you can think of. he broke racial barriers like that#and madonna was still bigger than taylor in her heyday lol#so what does that tell you?#i'm sorry but being famous was far more impactful back then than it is now#social media changed the dynamic between the public and celebs forever

If you don't mind me asking, how do you manage your chronic illness? I'm still in the process of diagnosis, but I'm starting to get pretty demoralized with my health slipping
I was referred to a endocrinologist for my PCOS and he's been amazing in terms of helping me reduce the horrific roller-coaster hormone imbalances and insulin-resistance, the only issue I'm still struggling with is the bad fatigue and hairloss (I'm lucky I've got so much of it though, it just sucks being covered in hair after a light breeze hits my head). I just try and stick to what I've learned makes my symptoms decrease or disappear like regular exercise, eating healthy, making sure my vitamins are supplemented if I'm more prone to certain deficiencies, getting regular blood tests to make sure my hormones aren't in full revolt, trying different medications that help reduce the hormones that are throwing me out of whack etc
It can be expensive to see a specialist so I sort of ration out my appointments, but if its affordable for you its worth the relief to even just have a plan in place. And sometimes you'll have harder times with the symptoms and feel like you're back at square one but being proactive with trying new health strategies with your specialist or GP will help you mix and match what works for you. when you go through a period where nothing feels like it's working, then it's always helpful to talk to someone about it.
And be careful what sources of info or support you look for online - there's so many communities for specific chronic illnesses that are full of misinformation (instagram and tiktok especially) and are just influencers disguised as experts looking to make money off you with tips that are NOT backed by science.
#I follow a great lady on insta who actually references and provides sources for her info about PCOS and she's helped tons#....and then there's a ton of insta pages full of fucking profiteering fucklords with fad diets and fake medicine#also can I say how much I absolutely hate PCOS support pages that call each other *cysters*#its so fucking gross WHY DO THAT

I shouldn’t have to actively fight to not get addicted to things! Like why are things that are addictive so easily accessible to me!
#there’s so much stigma against people with addictions#when I feel like it’s rare to be an adult and not be addicted to something!#my younger sibling is 20 and the other day they said ‘do people in their 20s just suddenly become alcoholics like all they do is drink’#and I had be like ‘no that literally happens and it sucks!’#and it’s by design! it’s so profitable to get people addicted to your products#and it makes people a lot less likely to rebel against the system if they have something to numb the pain and anger#that comes along with being oppressed and overworked#my psychiatrist gave me a Xanax prescription and I’m being so careful with how often I take them because I know they’re easily addictive#and I’ve always been really careful with alcohol just because I don’t like feeling hungover and gross or super drunk#and I was thinking to myself today like ‘this isn’t normal!’#I’m stressing myself out to not get addicted to something that is supposed to help me but I wouldn’t need the Xanax if I lived in a society#that pushed us past our limits to the point of developing trauma and mental health issues!#and then they blame us for our trauma responses and normal reactions to an unhealthy society#sell us drugs to treat the side affects and then stigmatize drug users so they can incarcerate them#and justify their dehumanization#I hate it here!!#personal

I feel like I'm in a different universe or something. Because tell me why people are trying to excuse Marko's statement as 'okay' and 'understandable' because Checo isn't performing well this season??!!!!!?!?
Like what do you mean by that Twitter user 'Do what's right'??????????
What stakes? Red Bull has been wiping their ass with the ENTIRE grid this season! Yeah in the beginning everyone was expecting a fight between Max and Checo so to see Checo underperforming lately has generated criticism. But criticism towards his PERFORMANCE!
There are people who just can't tolerate these conversations and will reach for the dumbest things to shut it down. You quite literally could just shut up and not partake. Broadcasting your ignorance is just crazy.
#checo perez#helmut marko#Ik a good chunk of them are just stupid Twitter blue trolls trying to increase their engagement but god just stick to 'X driver bad'#It's gross that they'll try to profit off of something like this anyway
