ugh spiderweb emoji u made me all sappy today.. from the bottom of my heart. thank you to all who take the time out of their day to read what i write! seriously. while i know i am a shoddy inbox replier (2600..) know i read every single one (even those little appreciative thank yous to those screaming for girldick) and whilst i don’t post all of them. my heart leaps in appreciation each time. and those who like all of my posts. and have been there for a while, months, even the whole entire year! i adore you all. you’re all so lovely. i recognise each pfp and grin just a little.

i think whether c!tommy Actually Died or not in the nuke ending is kinda irrelevant bc narratively it’s still framed as what happens Because he tries to kill himself. and like i don’t really care if something supernatural happens to stop death i think portraying a suicidal abuse victim who’s struggling to heal attempting suicide and then getting everything they ever want as directly stated by them after years of never letting them get a W is whether intentionally or not framing suicide as The Correct Option if you’re traumatised and that’s extremely irresponsible. like when I say it shouldn’t be canon it isn’t even bc of the plot holes or it being a terrible ending bc it wasn’t designed to be one even though I do hate it on those levels. i think it shouldn’t be canon bc that’s, like, an actively dangerous way to show suicide and should not have happened with the audience those creators have. i feel the same about c!wilburs ending too. they’re so irresponsible with extremely dangerous topics after building up a fanbase due to having them portrayed Well that i think they go beyond bad writing into being potentially extremely harmful considering how young the audience of mcyt channels realistically skews. i don’t think it’s a moral failure to make that mistake but I think if you’re a channel of that size it’s very possible to genuinely hurt people doing so and i think it being retconned isn’t just like, getting rid of an ending I dislike, i think it’s important bc it’s directly addressing the extremely harmful message those streams gave- even if unintentionally- and saying “nope that’s wrong”, and that’s important bc like. i have been to fan events for these streamers when my health was good enough to give a shit about them and not just their OCs and you’d be surprised at how large their audience leans in the single digit age. you don’t see them bc they can’t post on social media but they’re there and they genuinely might not be able to understand those messages as wrong, which i don’t think doing that on accident is a moral failure again (though if you have a pattern of ableism i will look at it suspiciously) you can still hurt people by accident and it is in fact a good thing to say that you did not mean that and that that’s wrong.

Militat Omnis Amans: The Beginnings by edaen - 92k words, fantasy, werewolf!jk, vampire!jm, forbidden love, super slow burn but super worth it, JIKOOK IN THIS IS MY FAVORITE JIKOOK IN ANY FIC EVER EVER EVER, this is the ultimate all or nothing will freeze hell over for the other kind of love, and the way this is written is just so... how do i describe it. like you can just tell the author wanted to be very realistic with their feelings. you’ve seen the word count, this is SLOW burn. like you will legit feel their struggle to just be able to love each other and while it hurts, it’s also SO GLORIOUS. i love this one so much and if you like reading angst with happy ending but like cranked up to 200% then read this. bonus feels if you read the whole series

Until Dawn (series) by edaen - this is the long series where the previous one above is part of. highly rec if you love fantasy and you wanna read about bts being a rag tag group of supernatural beings fighting evil yay. also it makes the above fic more satisfying because you see more of jikook just being tgt and in love (with bonus angst because of course)

7 Signs by NamHyora - 27k words, secret spies au, abo, alpha!jk, omega!jm who is always used as a raven in their operations aka they use jimin and his attractive self to attract people and gather information or acquire targets and all that spy stuff, and his bestie alpha jk is not too happy about it hehe, friends to lovers, iove this one so much i wish it was longer but i think the author is planning to write a sequel!

I don’t know why, when I watched the trailer of The Eclipse months ago I thought it was a time travel BL.

I thought Akk died somewhere in the future bc he opposed the school rules/went against corruption a la The Gifted so Ayan used the eclipse/school curse to come back in time when Akk was a prefect in order to stop him dying.

I had the feeling Ayan traveled back and forth in time, like there was a place in the school that after the eclipse and for a certain period of time or thanks to a pendant of something, he could dissapear. Meanwhile no one knew who was the misterious student. He didn’t appear in any list, he would dissapeared misteriously if others tried to follow him. At the end no one dared to speak of him out loud, only in whispers. They said he was the ghost of a student who died bc the curse...

Or maybe he just traveled back in time one time and stayed there. Who knows.

Think about that. A couple of opposites in love fighting inequality in their school and then one of them dies bc of it. The other, mad with grief and anger, goes back in time to protect him, but at the same time some things has to happen the same. And no matter how he tries not to, he crosses paths with his lover again, even if he should be invisible to him, even if he tries to stay away from him. The first (second) meeting goes terrible. But bc he knows Akk better than anyone and knows what his buttons are, he can read in Akk’s eyes he’s attracted to him, even if he doesn’t want to. Ayan cannot. He just can’t ignore Akk, here in front of him. Alive. Looking like he wants punch and kiss him at the same time. He shouldn’t enjoy their interactions so much, he knows he has an advantage Akk doesn’t have, but he cannot stop himself from messing with Akk. It’s thrilling, to know Akk fell in love with him for a second time. Like it was destiny, like they were meant to be together.

And then somehow Ayan has to pay the price for going back in time and change things and the price is his life, his existence. And bc love is stronger, Akk manages to have Ayan back.

Aaaand yeah, somewhat predictable but the potential for angst! *clenches fist*

So imagine my confusion when I watched the first ep of The Eclipse. I expected a supernatural time travel BL and then...it wasn’t??

I mean. Ok. It’s not the first time a series ends very different from what the first trailer implies, but I swear I thought there were at least time travel and one of them knew the other previously.

What I got was a first ep with so much potential but somehow lackluster.

We know the main actors are good. And maybe that’s what bothers me the most, not my misinterpretation of the plot. The actors are good, with experience. And at the end of the day the episode itself is a mess of pacing and overuse of dramatical music. I mean. It was painful. It felt like they were traying so hard to be the second The Gifted without really understanding what made it so good. (the school director looked so much like a cheap copy of director Supot that I was cringing internally)

Or maybe the did. The photography is nothing fancy but neutrally good, as well as cinematography, which is typical of gmmtv, but again, you don’t need anything fancy to tell a good story. So maybe the initial result was good and they just fucked up MASSIVELY in the editing process bc ohmaygod I swear, the pacing is atrocious, everything is so rushed you feel like you’re watching an episode summary. And I want to fire to whoever told the sound editors to add that dramatic music in. every. single. scene. We get it! Something is afoot! Yeah we get it! But if you hype everything up like that, the result is gonna be dissapointing.

Seriously. Someone please fire whoever makes the decisions on sound/music and pacing/editing in gmmtv, they have good actors and directors ffs, and a lot of decent ones, so why gmmtv always fucks up in the post production???

Anyway. This is just me talking out loud and ranting a bit. I will keep watching this series bc I enjoy the actors and want to see how it goes, but I don’t have high expectations for it. It was one of my most awaited series since I watched the first trailer ages ago and now I’m pretty dissapointed. Seriously, so much potential lost.

(I guess I’ll go back to rewatch KP. I guess not everyone can have gorgeous photography and cinematography and reeeeeally good characterizations and plot *sighs sadly*)

As always ✨SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE✨

So first off: when I hit the scene where lqq confronts xl and screams “I will never be like you” I sat up in bed, did a little shimmy of delight, and hissed “fuck yes” at like 2 AM so. Now you have a preview of wtf this train wreck will be

1 ) lqq is a good character

We don’t get a ton of time with lqq because tgcf is 87 side characters running across stage with The Most Interesting Concept constantly one-upping each other before vanishing. But what we do get is, I think, enough to make a pretty compelling story: Lang Qianqiu is a kind and generous prince who is also the sole survivor of the bloody massacre of his entire family, committed by the people dearest to him (both in his belief that Gusohi Fangxin did it and in the reality of An Le’s involvement), who goes on to peacefully lead his fractious nation into a peaceful reign before he ascends as a powerful enough (aka beloved and worshipped enough) god to be ranked among the top heavenly generals. That’s like. Pretty fucking classic protagonist vibes right there.

And, as usual with mxtx’s characters, we get a lot more than this lovely little backstory. In his interactions in canon, lqq is capable of great grief and anger; he is willing to sacrifice himself if it means avenging his murdered family; and he simultaneously holds both great hatred and great respect for his old teacher. And, of course, he winds up raising and taking care of his enemy’s son which shows a remarkable depth of compassion and emotional messiness that I find terribly compelling. He struggles with a simplistic view of justice that is supported by lies told to “protect” him and that is uprooted by the truth and forces him to try to make sense of the world without the guardrails that others installed around him (looking at you mister fangxin sir).

Xl didn’t want lqq to become like him (self-sacrificing, vengeful, alone) but lqq not only became alone, chasing vengeance, & willing to sacrifice himself for revenge—he also became kind, open-minded, & remorseful!! & he still clearly respects xl @ novel end 🙃🙃

We all know hc’s “they’re not very alike at all” and yeah sure baby go support your man but narratively, there’s a lot of importance given to cycles, parallels, and foils in mxtx’s writing and most explicitly (compared to mdzs, haven’t read svss) in tgcf. For example, *gestures at beefleaf, gestures at Xianle Trio vs Wuyogn Crew, gestures at Xie Lian & Jun Wu’s whole uh. Deal.* And while I’d argue xl and lqq are part of a triumvirate rather than a pair, we’re not including mister three-face in this conversation so just looking at xl and lqq:

Both adored and sheltered crown princes

Both taught by a guoshi who was seeking to prevent the repetition of their own tragedies and in their efforts, lied/omitted information and failed to protect their charge from tragedy

Both were betrayed* by their closest friends

Both are the last living members of their respective royal families

Both caught the interest of supernatural beings from a young age

Etc etc I’m getting v bored and distracted writing this so moving on

Most importantly to me, we have their betrayal by a very close and adored mentor and how they react. The confrontation I mention at the start of this shitshow is really imo one of the most important scenes in the novel because it a) illustrates the differences in xl and Jun Wu and b) sort of gives you a preview of how xl ultimately wins

So a) Jun Wu and Xie Lian both take a talented, marked-for ascension young prince under their wing. Jun Wu sees himself in the boy and obsesses over shaping him into Jun Wu’s own image in the belief that this will make him the perfect heir. Jun Wu pushes his chosen heir into situations where Xie Lian is repeatedly harmed in an effort to show that the common people are fickle and cruel and don’t deserve his compassion and care.

Meanwhile, Xie Lian is reluctantly roped into mentoring his prince due to his inability to stand aside when he feels he could do something to prevent hurt or injustice befalling another (simultaneously his great strength and great weakness! God I love him). Xie Lian tries to teach his student to believe in and care for the common people and not to sacrifice himself (see: flashback convo re:taking the force of the sword strike into his own body).

When Xie Lian refuses to bend in the shape Jun Wu demands, Jun Wu bashes his head into the wall. When Lang Qianqiu cries “I will never be like you!”, Xie Lian laughs and says “Good!”.

B) this of course feeds directly into foreshadowing! Like Lang Qianqiu’s bold words, xl ultimately refuses to become like his mentor and remains defiant even when it would stop him from being hurt. Xl beats lqq and says so what if I tricked you, so what if I lied, I still won. Naturally, xl beats Jun Wu not through standard swordplay but by using a trick he learned while forced to busk and wander the earth alone and unlucky for centuries.

…okay so I have fully forgotten what I was actually saying here! Anyway!

Like Xie Lian, Lang Qianqiu spends a time consumed with the need for vengeance, hunting his enemy and rejecting the heavens. And like Xie Lian, he winds up caring for his enemy’s “son” and trying to both comfort him and maintain what’s left of Qi Rong’s life force despite having previously been hellbent on destroying him—bc he sees the impact it has on another person. In the end, he even gives a gift to Xie Lian—his mentor, his role model, and the one who killed his father—that was once given to him as a symbol of unexpected kindness. Sound familiar?

But, importantly, and contradictory to what I have been yelling abt but whatever it’s 12:30 am, Lang Qianqiu is not a direct mirror of Xie Lian but a closing of a vital loop in the story. Lqq is very similar to xl (I will die on this hill!! Only I won’t bc I’m stronger than y’all and will keep swinging these pots and pans) but bc xl tries to do better and keep lqq from suffering the way xl has, lqq is able to have a gentler and more optimistic path forward. He’s proof that even a small act of kindness or even kindness to only one person still matters and has a ripple effect that can’t be seen when you’re in the middle of it—a thread started with xl giving the coral pearl to Lang Ying and closed with Lang Qianqiu returning the pearl to Xie Lian.

So I have no idea if any of this is coherent or compelling but I meant to be asleep two hours ago and the points are:

A) Lang Qianqiu is good actually

B) parallels!!!

C) look ive already started another wip about Lang Qianqiu and Xie Lian and I didn’t want this but no one else wrote it so now I have to so pls just accept this as a warning

J2 are cute together and their chemistry is off the charts. However, I would never tinhat if it wasn't for the inconsistencies in their stories. IF they were just two best bros, there would be no need for the PR cover ups, therefore, there would be no slip ups. They could've just behaved like friends do. Wild idea, right? the way Jensen’s proposal to Danneel was a complete replica of Jared’s proposal to Sandy, AND the way they proposed on the same weekend- the only thing different was the location, they both had taken their wives(or in jared’s case ex-fiancé) out, had wanted to propose but got nervous, the girls had asked what was wrong and they chickened out and proposed in the hotel room instead.

Speaking of the engagements, nearly everything about them was highly suspicious. Both occurred on the same weekend under the guise that each J had no idea the other was proposing, despite having said multiple times that they tell each other everything and showing that to be true through their actions as well. A couple weeks ago there was someone in the animorphs tag (idk who; I blocked them immediately out of exhaustion) who was arguing that the animorphs tv show was better than the books bc the books are ableist, racist, and misogynistic (and anyone who likes them is all those things as well). Do you feel like those are valid criticisms of the books—and do you think the show avoids these pitfalls?

1. You are correct that the thing to do is hit Mute on XKit to get rid of the kind of posts that do nothing but raise blood pressure.

2. The whole process of comparing media to say “x is more racist than y” is... kinda wonky at best, because it’s almost never comparing apples to apples and there’s no such thing as a non-racist work because we live in a racist society.  So I think we should criticize the things we love, but I don’t think stacking them up against each other is necessarily useful.

3. AniTV has a few not-good decisions that aren’t present in Animorphs, including:

Casting white non-Hispanic actors to play Ax and Eva

Having a Magical Negro scene where an older Black man convinces Tobias to become an Animorph through the power of simple folk wisdom

Adapting multiple plots where Rachel gets rescued by Jake or Tobias, but never any of the plots where she saves them

Casting Cassie as a light-skinned actress with long wavy hair, when she’s described in the books as dark-skinned with short tightly curled hair

Casting a 27-year-old actor as Tobias and a 17-year-old actor as Rachel

Having a few not-good jokes about an oatmeal-addicted controller having psychosis or needing medication

Diverting from Cassie’s and Marco’s book descriptions to make them more traditionally gendered by late-90s American norms

4. Animorphs has a few not-good decisions all on its own, including:

Not questioning Ax’s assumption that disabled andalites have no quality of life because they’re disabled

Killing or curing all of its disabled characters, thereby buying into the idea that disabled bodies are a “problem” that needs to be “resolved”

Telling a story that parallels a group of Black Americans to a group of nonhuman aliens

Everything about #40, none of which ages well

Having Cassie mention that Jake “doesn’t care that I’m Black” like he deserves a fucking cookie for this or something

Other things that I’m forgetting or didn’t spot as a nondisabled whitey

5.  I don’t have a single good answer for what to do about anything I just said.  My own stance has always been to love what I love and also not shy away from criticizing it, to try to learn from the failings of these works and do better, and to do my best to reflect and self-educate.  To recognize that Your Mileage May Vary, and that anyone who chooses to “nope” out of the series because of those elements is entitled to do so.  To be aware that my own personal “can’t enjoy it because can’t see around the imperialism” (Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, Discworld) story is someone else’s “hate the imperialism, love the plot” series.  To remember that I can still love deeply homophobic series (Supernatural, Angel, The Path) while being loudly and proudly queer.

Roxanne Gay’s Bad Feminist talks endlessly about the question about what one can do as a fat Black queer woman and assault survivor who finds the music of Robin Thicke just so dang catchy, and doesn’t arrive at a single answer.  Because I don’t know that there is a single answer, but I don’t think that either extreme of “let’s pretend there’s nothing wrong with this work” or “you’re a terrible person if you tolerate the existence of this problematic work” is a useful solution.

I know a lot of TV shows love the “my parents are trash and I’m literally a child being a parent to myself” [which there’s nothing wrong with because that does reflect a lot of real people and their situations.] but watching teen wolf and seeing the stable and loving dynamics between Stiles and his dad and Scott and his mom was so good. And unlike with other shows, they actually got personalities and we got to learn so much about them. [they weren’t just the parents, they actually helped out with the supernatural when they were told and did as much as they could ].

And what’s great about the parents is that even tho they are great, they do have faults like when Melissa learned the truth it took her a week to come to terms with it. she was avoiding Scott and ish, but when it came down to helping him she accepted it and was like yea what can I do? Melissa is such a good person and mom [taking time off work to watch her son’s first game even tho they got bills to pay and she’s literally a single mom] and she does her best to help Scott. Stillinski is the same with stiles and I can talk about it, but this post is already too long. also I love to think about how Scott has a crappy dad [yes he’s trying but he still crappy] and Stiles lost his mom, so Stillinski is almost like a father to Scott and AS WE’VE SEEN IN SEASON THREE STILES DOES CONSIDER MELISSA AS CLOSE TO A MOTHER AS HE HAS !!!!! but moving on.... 😌

Argent also had such a good character growth especially after Allison died and even though his daughter was gone he still was a mentor to everyone in the pack. seeing actual good relationships between parents and kids even on TV shows is actually so important especially when you’re never seeing good ones in your household. to sum this post up: stan Melissa McCall for clear skin bc I mean have you seen her ? how could you not love her ?

THEIR PROM NIGHT. THEY DROVE THREE HOURS TO GO TO AN ARCADE IN ANOTHER CITY PURELY BECAUSE TRIS MENTIONED IT ON A WHIM AND CHRYSI WAS LIKE “honestly, it sounds more fun than this” AND THEY WERE OUT ALL NIGHT DRIVING TO THE ARCADE AND THEN BACK!!!! they’re in their fancy prom outfits and chrysi’s winning tris all the little stuffed animals from those claw machines and they stop at a 24-hr diner on their way back…. it makes me so happy-sad. they had so much fun on their prom night. (tris still has the photos they took in the photo booth that night and he cries whenever he sees them) ((chrysi does too.))

such a silly little moment, but i think it’s one tris values deeply, but tris once got into an argument regarding scooby doo lore with a friend and he called chrysi to get her input and SHE BACKED HIM UP!!! AND SHE HAD PROOF DOWN TO THE TIMESTAMP!!!! that was a true love moment for tris, for SURE.

post-reunion, where tris gets possessed and chrysi saves him + once he wakes up, she’s hovering over him with her hand on his forehead and she’s looking soso worried… but when she notices he’s awake, she forces a smile and goes, “welcome back to the land of the living, pretty boy” GOD. SHE CARES ABOUT HIM SO MUCH.

SPEAKING OF POST-REUNION DATING, OMG??? THEIR HALLOWEEN PARTY??? tris knows all about chrysi’s Thing where she has to go as something that she Is for halloween (and he knows it’s bc of that one episode of buffy the vampire slayer, bc of course he does!!! tris knows so much abt chrysi), so he dresses up as someone from the marching band BECAUSE HE KNOWS SHE’LL DRESS UP AS A CHEERLEADER…! and she does!!!! and when she sees him dressed up as a marching band player, she’s jst like <3333… he remembered her Thing !!!!! he loves her so much.

also later in said halloween party, he finds her locked up in a trunk, unconscious and bleeding, and he’s so distressed that he accidentally shatters a mirror with his magic (that he doesn’t know he has). that’s a fun little scene :)also proof of how chrysi is literally incapable of taking halloween off bc she always ends up getting roped into something supernatural anyway. work will follow her around every single time.

this is the beginning of tris realizing that dating chrysi means that he has to learn how to cope with the dangers of supernatural business + how it’ll affect chrysi. so that is less smiley face, i guess.

this is specific to my fear street au, but trysi laying together in bed and holding each other while listening to a mix tape tris made…. oughhh…..

ummm, reunion specific trysi scene that’s not officially them dating, but tris comes back to salem and is lamenting how it’s become even more tourist-town-ish since he’s been absent, and chrysi’s behind him like, “god, yeah, doesn’t it suck? it’s worse bc of those stupid ghost rumors” AND TRIS STILL HASN’T LOOKED OVER TO SEE IT’S CHRYSI, SO HE’S AGREEING W/ HER AND HAVING A CONVO WITH HER, THEN TURNS AND SCREAMS WHEN HE REALIZES IT’S CHRYSI. btw, his bandmates are there and they’re so interested in this random girl that’s very very pretty and seems to be cool with tris. imagine being them and realizing that this is the girl that inspired 98.79% of tris’s songs (suddenly, they all understand why that’s the case… they also would never get over chrysi if they had gotten the chance to date her in high school).
