Dennis sighed, tried to think of how to tell her what he was acting like without telling her why. “Something happened that he’d usually be super fucking annoying about, but he hasn’t brought it up. Like, hasn’t even mentioned it, and he should be completely refusing to shut up about it.”

Dee looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “Do you want him to be more annoying, Dennis? Is that what you want?”

“No, you stupid b--obviously I don’t want him to be, but he should be. He’s Mac, that’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

“What if you didn’t miss?”

Lawrence froze. Adam couldn’t see his expression, but he could see the way his grip went slack around the knife. “What?”

“When you tried to shoot me in the heart, I mean. If you killed me like you wanted. What do you think you’d be doing now?” Casual, like he was asking about how long dinner had left instead of what things would be like if his boyfriend murdered him.

“Adam, I never wanted to kill you.”

Adam shrugged even though Lawrence couldn’t see it. Why wouldn’t he fucking turn around and look at him? “Not what I asked.”

Lawrence huffed, and there. He turned around to glare, and he was looking at Adam. “I don’t know, Adam. Alison and I would’ve gotten a divorce still, I’d be living on my own, I’d find some way to cope I’m sure. You know how I feel about pointless hypotheticals.”

Got him, thought some vindictive little voice in the back of Adam’s mind. “Bet your hero Jigsaw would’ve been a fan.”
